The 1988 champion point-to-point rider and father of professional jump jockey Nick died suddenly on 5 June. He was 55.

Philip suffered a brain aneurysm at home in Cornwall. He was a popular figure on the Devon and Cornwall point-to-point circuit.

He was successful in showjumping before becoming an amateur jockey and had his first winner between the flags in 1982. He went on to ride 187 winners in points and six more in hunter chases.

In his championship year Philip scored 37 wins, beating the previous record on 32 set in 1978 by John Bryan.
