Oaks at Epsom

The Oaks is a Group One Flat race open to three-year-old fillies that is held on the Friday of The Derby Festival at Epsom Downs racecourse. The race is run over a distance of 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 6 yards, which is approximately one-and-a-half miles.

The Oaks was established in 1779, founded by the 12th Earl of Derby and named after his estate “The Oaks”. This makes it the second oldest of the five British Classics after the St Leger, which was first run in 1776. It forms one leg of the unofficial fillies’ Triple Crown alongside the 1,000 Guineas and the St Leger.
