Malcolm Barr, CBE, dies

  • Long-serving BSJA official, John Malcolm Barr CBE, known to his friends as Malcolm, died on the 15 July after a short illness. He was 75-years-old.

Malcolm’s involvement with the BSJA began in 1982 when he was co-opted onto the BSJA executive board. He went on to act as treasurer for many years before becoming chairman of the finance committee. He was elected as the Region A representative of the BSJA in 1983, a post he made his own.

Before his official association with showjumping began, Malcolm demonstrated his great enthusiasm for the sport with the horses he bought for members of his family to compete on. The most famous combinations without doubt was the much loved Ryan’s Son, ridden to Olympic team silver by son-in-law John Whitaker.

Malcolm also served on the FEI Finance Committee. His services to industry were recognised when he was awarded a CBE in 1984.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday 19 July 2001 at 12.30pm at Kirkby Overblow church, Kirkby Overblow, near Harrogate, Yorks.

Family flowers only. Donations to St Michaels Hospice, Harrogate or St Gemma’s Hospice, Leeds.
