First foal for top SJ mare

  • Top show jumping mare is expecting her first foal at Ludger Beerbaum’s home in Germany

The former Olympic gold medal-winning show jumping Ratina Z has returned to Ludger Beerbaum’s home in Riesenbeck, Germany, where she is expecting a foal by the grey Hanoverian stallion Artos (Alme-Gotthard). Artos was successfully competed by America’s Mark Leone.

This is the first foal Ratina has carried herself, as all her three previous offspring since she retired were born to surrogate mothers by embryo transfer.

However, confirming that breeding future champions is a risky business, Ludger Beerbaum said: “Ratina was a freak in the ring and is not necessarily an ideal broodmare. A daughter of hers by Cor De La Bryere can hardly clear 1m!”
