More Hickstead showing champions crowned at Royal International

  • Caroline Mackness claimed Saturday’s first tricolour in the international arena, when her own and Pat Duncan’s Almost Illegal took the Garrick Surface Coatings Ltd’s hack championship.

By Criminal Law out of Fable III, the elegant brown mare was a Horse of the Year Show winner in 2006 with her producer Katie Jerram. Bought last summer, Caroline has achieved good results at North of England, Kent County and The Royal, and they headed their large division earlier in the day. “She felt really lovely today,” said Caroline.

Standing reserve were Gemma Beal and True Blue III, who had stood second to Almost Illegal in the large division. Top two in the opening small hack class were Allister Hood (Southills Hocus Pocus) and Niki Hall (Take Silk).

After five well filled sections in the Bankswood Stud BSPS Pretty Polly (home produced) classes were completed, Jess Renshaw-Smith and Nantcol Lady Penelope were called forward to take the prestigious overall championship in the international arena. Winners of their first ridden class, nine-year-old Jess and the Beckside Little Toff chestnut mare remained foot perfect. “She’s just the sweetest, and most normal pony at home,” said Jess’s proud mother Karen. Taking the reserve were large mixed height novice SHP winners Jessica Goodyear and Rotherwood Maybe.

Leon King and Pearl Underwood’s Talking Point extended their winning run when adding the Continental and North Eastern Tyres small hunter championship to their incredible seasonal tally. Traditionally one of the most hotly contested classes, quality and quantity again spread down the line.”The winner was a very correct horse, and rode well,” said conformation judge David Kellow. Taking the next two placings were Alwyn Fradley (State Policy) and Katie Jerram (Temple Bready Fear Not).

Other champions included Nakita and Angela Cutler’s Stormy Rivers Scouts Shez So Randi who took the Stretcholt Equestrian Centre’s miniature horse title, and Joyce McCluskey’s Rhos Virtuoso who clinched the Harrison Civil Engineering BSPS anglo and part-bred Arab tricolour for her daughter Melissa.

For the second year running, Georgina Andrews and Overdrive II headed the Betty Skelton Memorial Ladies classical side saddle championship. “He’s a real pleasure to ride, and loves the atmosphere here” said Georgina.
