  • Three from Richard Hannon’s yard go head to head in the Group 2 race at Goodwood this weekend

Richard Hannon fields three, Priors Lodge, Reel Buddy and Redback in Goodwood’s Group 2 Celebration Mile on Saturday.

After Reel Buddy narrowly got home from his stable companion Umistim in the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury last weekend Hannon gave a shrug of the shoulders and confessed: “I have to run them against each other because there are not enough opportunities when you have several decent milers in your yard.

This time it may be the turn of Redback who was just in front of Priors Lodge when they were second and third behind Nayyir here at the beginning of the month.

The Hannon trio is opposed by locally trained Tillerman, from the Pulborough yard of Amanda Perrett, and Tough Speed, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, responsible for the last two winners Medicean and No Excuse Needed.

Course winner Where Or When is improving, while Godolphin rely on the talented Firebreak. Redback is the pick of an intriguing field.

The opening March Stakes has been designed as a trial for next month’s Doncaster St Leger but has attracted only two entries for the final classic – First Charter and Spanish John.
