  • A group known as “Ladies Who Race”, which organises racing trips for single women plans to celebrate its third anniversary at Goodwood next month

A group for single, female racing fans is looking for new members as it celebrates its third anniversary with a trip to glorious Goodwood next month.

The group, Ladies Who Race, is for women who aren’t happy about going to a race meeting on their own.

The group is run by Mary Seth-Smith, widow of commentator and author, Michael.

“When I was asked to set up the club, I jumped at the chance,” she said. “I was not happy or comfortable racing on my own and thought there must be an enormous number of ladies in my position.”

She says the attitude to women on their own – particularly going into a bar – is totally unfair.

A day at the races with Ladies Who Race will cost between £80-£90, which includes a member’s enclosure badge, a three-course meal, tea and usually a speaker. Membership is £105 per year.

The group also organises holidays abroad – the favourite option for next year is the Kentucky Derby in the USA.
