South East welcomes new point to point track which features its first race fixture this weekend
Amateur horse racing, or point-to-pointing, comes to a new course at Godstone, Surrey, on Sunday 3 March and Easter Monday, 1 April.
The venue, which is close to the M25 is described as “set in beautiful rolling parkland with the North Downs acting as a dramatic backdrop”.
The organisers have been looking for a new venue since their course at Rodmell was deemed too close to Plumpton Racecourse, causing a clash of dates for the Easter Monday meeting.
Landowners Mr and Mrs Tim McCarthy heard of their plight and offered the ground at Godstone. The position makes it the closest point-to-point course to London.
Honorary secretary, Nigel Wilson, said: “We are delighted to have this new site. It has the most wonderful setting and the going should always be good; with its sandy soil it drains well and provides a sound surface for racing.”
He praised Tandridge Council and Surrey Police for their friendly and useful discussions concerning arrangements for the day.
