  • Two races to be run Exeter racecourse next month have been named in honour of champion jockey AP McCoy.

Exeter will host the two races on 16 December, in an effort to help him win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

The Vote AP McCoy for BBC sports personality beginners chase and the AP McCoy 15-times champion jockey graduation steeple chase will be staged at the Devon course.

The candidates for the award are currently being selected by the sports editors of the national press, and the shortlist of 10 will be announced on 29 November.

    The public can then vote.

The BBC Sports personality of the year awards winners are announced on 19 December, and Exeter racecourse hopes this will give the jockey a last minute boost.

Managing director Steven Clarke said: “This is possibly AP’s best ever chance of winning the title and there can be no jockey more deserving of the success. It would also help elevate National Hunt racing status and also showcase the bravery and dedication of all jockeys.”
