  • Somerset-based racehorse trainer David Pipe has been named BBC South West male sports personality of the year.

David, who is son of 15-time champion trainer Martin Pipe, sent out this year’s Grand National hero Comply or Die, in only his second season training racehorses.

David also trained the winner of the 2008 Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury last weekend (29 November), Madison Du Berlais.

It was a first win for both David and jockey Tom Scudamore in the prestigious race.

The 25-1 shot held off the well-backed Charlie Mann-trained Air Force One to win by 3 lengths.

It was a particularly special win for the duo as it came 20 years after the Pipe/Scudamore senior team (Martin and Peter) won the Hennessy with Strands Of Gold.
