  • Q. I have got a 17hh Shire/TB on loan and I am having problems finding tack and equipment large enough to fit her. Although a few companies produce stock in extra-large sizes, only selected items are produced this big.

I have been unable to find an extra large breast girth to use with my lunge roller. Side reins are also a problem as most are one size, which is not large enough.

Also, a lot of rug companies seem to stop at 6ft 9in, and as for exercise sheets – what exercise sheets?

Can you suggest any companies which supply for big horses?

Carolyn Henderson answers: Neither the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) nor the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) are aware of any companies who make extra-large tack as standard, but you should be able to get equipment made to measure.

The SMS (tel: 01449 711642), will be able to put you in touch with local members who make made-to-measure tack, though obviously this will cost more than ready-made standard-sized equipment.

Many manufacturers of rugs will also make to measure at an extra charge. Horseware Ireland’s Rambo Exel turnout rug is designed for large-framed horses. Visit www.horsewear.com for more information.
