Ponies “dumped” on showground

  • Eleven young ponies have been abandoned on the Herts County Showground

The show secretary at Herts County Showground is appealing to the owners of 11 young “moorland-type” ponies to come forward to claim them.

The ponies were left at the showground in Redbourn around two weeks ago. They were found when staff went into work on 1 November.

Show secretary, Malcolm Allen, said: “We’ve not been able to get up close – they’re too wild and just keep galloping off, but the RSPCA has been along and they seem fine.

“We don’t have the facilities to keep them here indefinitely, so if the owners don’t come forward, we will have to sell them off either privately, or at auction.”

He says the RSPCA says it may take a few of them and there have already been some private enquiries.

A reward of £25 is being offered to anyone who has information about the owners. Malcolm Allen is also going to give away a family ticketfor next year’s show in May, which he says “will go ahead in spite of all the problems this year”.

An auction run by Beesons of Hertford will take place on Monday 26 November at 1pm.
