Get ‘Hitched’ at Hickstead with trailer safety campaign

  • Highways Agency (HA) staff are offering tips on trailer towing and copies of their new magazine, Hitched, to attendees at the Royal International Horse Show (22-26 July) at Hickstead this weekend.

Hitched raises awareness of the safety, insurance and legal issues of towing anything on public roads – including horse boxes and agricultural trailers.

Incidents involving vehicles towing caravans or trailers account for 43 fatalities and 1,400 injuries on England’s roads annually.

Fliss Drewett, deputy manager of the HA team for Kent and Sussex, said: “With the holiday season upon us, it’s a good time to remind drivers to check and double check [their trailers] before they take to the roads.

“That advice applies to anyone planning to travel this summer including those towing anything – including trailers, boats and caravans as well as horseboxes.”

Hitched follows on from last year’s HA Fit to Tow DVD and has been produced as part of the HA driver information programme.

The Fit To Tow DVD and advice leaflet can be viewed at www.highways.gov.uk/towing and you can get a copy of Hitched, or the DVD and leaflet, from the HA information line on 08457 50 40 30.
