Double boost for road safety

  • The BHS joins forces with Redwings and Blue Chip to promote road safety with new posters and car stickers

The British Horse Society’s ongoing campaign to educate drivers about the dangers faced by horse riders on the road has received a double boost thanks to Redwings horse sanctuary and feed company, Blue Chip.

Redwings is funding the printing of a new poster warning motorists about the dangers associated with riders on the road, while Blue Chip has produced a car sticker which aims to reduce the number of horse-related road accidents.

The poster shows a driver’s eye view ofa wet road in poor light with a ridden horse warning sign just visible before a sharp bend. It is approximately 8in high and 17in wide.

Designed by graphic design and photography degree student, Fiona Crawford, the poster has been created to encourage drivers to think ahead and drive more cautiously in areas regularly used by riders.

“We were delighted to fund the printing of this excellent poster,” says John Archibald, chief executive officer of Redwings. “One of our valued volunteers was killed while riding on the road, so we know only too well the dangers that horses face.

“More than 100 horses die on the roads every year, and these posters may help to reduce the number of deaths by raising awareness.”

The car sticker carries the slogan “Reduce Your Horse Power, Save Horses Lives” and is being distributed free with a number of equestrian magazines, including the official BHS magazine, British Horse.

Every sticker is accompanied by a BHS road safety questionnaire, which has been designed to gather information in support of the society’s ongoing campaign to improve safety for riders on the road and increase off-road riding facilities.

Everyone who completes and returns the questionnaire will be entered into a prize draw for a Blue Chip wool rug. Vouchers of Blue Chip products are included on the sticker’s peel off backing.
