Walk the Bramham CCI3* cross-country course [PICS]

The course is designed by Ian Stark, who is in his sixth year designing here.

“The terrain is demanding and its easy to overuse it, so I have to be careful,” said Ian. “I want to test straightness, bravery and accuracy. Above all, however, I want competitors to be able to ride at speed, but in balance. A lot of people think that they can gallop up the hills, but they lose control going back down.”

William Fox-Pitt, who has won the CCI3* here seven times, said: “It’s a super track which favours the bold. I like to talk to Ian about what he had in mind which I haven’t yet this week. I think you should ride a course the way it’s been designed — to reinvent a course is dangerous.

“Ian wants you to ride off forward strides and get on with it, not be poking around adding strides.”

William picked out the water complex at 12 as a jump he is worried about, saying it’s “a serious water jump”.

The optimum time is 10min 8sec.
