Zara races for retired racehorses

  • Zara Phillips swaps her cross-country colours for racing silks in an equine charity race at Plumpton

    Zara Phillips made her debut on the racecourse when she took part in a charity race to raise funds for The Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre at Plumpton racecourse yesterday.

    Riding a four-year-old gelding called Bakiri, trained by Richard Phillips, Princess Anne’s daughter finished second over11 furlongs.

    This was Zara’s first public appearance as a race jockey, although she regularly rides out on exercise for Richard Phillips at home.

    Zara was one 10 runners in the girls v boys race, which was won by Tara Pitman, daughter of the racing commentator Richard, riding the Martin Pipe-trained Montreal.

    Zara hit the headlines last month after she won an individual silver medal at the Young Rider Europeans in Austria, riding Toytown.
