Twin tragedy at Auchinleck

  • Two horses broke their backs and had to be put down at Scotland’s Auchinleck Horse Trials last weekend.

Carole Dennis’s 14-year-old gelding Beckett II, with whom she successfully completed Badminton and Burghley, including a rare double clear at Badminton this year, fell on landing at the second part of a footbridge double.

Carole, who runs an eventing yard in North Yorkshire, fell heavily but escaped injury.

Nearly A Tonto, a 16.3hh nine-year-old skewbald gelding owned and ridden by North West-based Tuffy Tilley, suffered a similar accident over a timber wagon.

Tuffy broke a wrist and two ribs in the fall.
