New life for old horseboxes

  • Vintage machinery collectors have turned their attention to old horseboxes and have started buying them to refurbish and show at vintage fairs.

According to Jim Wilkie from Old Sodbury’s Sort Out, the demand for horseboxes is huge.

“It spiralled from tractors and has expanded to include all types of machinery, including horseboxes and horse trailers. Horseboxes generally fair better than most other commercial vehicles as they don’t get used as much, plus the body tends to protect the cab and underneath.”

Jim organises two “Sort Out” events each year, with the next one scheduled for 12 April at Newbury Showground, Berks. Each event is a chance for like-minded enthusiast to come together to buy, sell and exchange vintage vehicles, as well as proudly display their hard work and efforts in restoring items to their former glory.

“Our enthusiasts are interested in any horseboxes or trailers from pre-1970s,” says Jim .

“Anyone with an old vehicle which they no longer want should contact me as I will put them in touch someone who might be interested in it.”
