Londoners pay tribute to war horses

  • West Londoners from three villages near Heathrow gathered last weekend (20 July) to remember the horses of World War 1.

In the pageant, organised by Harmondsworth resident Roy Barwick, there were mounted representatives from the Metropolitan police, Light Cavalry HAC and Indian horsemen.

Heavy horses were on parade drawing vehicles from the period including a wagonette built in 1900, ammunitions cart and farm cart.

Organiser Phil Rumsey said: “This event reflects the strength of our community who wanted to honour the men and horses from this area who gave their lives for us. We will remember them.”

One million horses and mules were engaged in WW1.
