Phillip Miller wins Hickstead Derby 2013

  • Phillip Miller gained the biggest win of his career when he and Caritiar Z jumped the only clear to win this year’s Hickstead Derby.

The man from Hertfordshire has been a popular rider on the county circuit for many years. He has produced a number of star horses including Talan, Marius Claudius and Je T’Aime Flamenco, who have gone on to international success for other riders.

This was his chance to prove himself as one of the elite and he grasped it with both hands. Despite a heavy shower during his round of the British Jumping Derby, Phillip and Caritiar Z never looked like making a mistake and no-one could match them.

Their closest rivals were William Funnell (Dorada) and Trevor Breen (Adventure De Kannan), who shared second place after both faulting at the tricky dry ditch.

“I still can’t believe I’ve won. In fact, I think it will take a week to sink in,” said Phillip afterwards.

And although disappointed, both William and Trevor paid tribute to the winner.

He’s one of the nicest guys in showjumping and if I’ve got to finish second I’d rather it was to Phillip than anyone else,” said William.
