Michael Owen has revealed he wants to learn to ride — with the aim of taking part in a charity race.
The former England footballer is a prominent racehorse owner and landlord of trainer Tom Dascombe’s Manor House Stables in Cheshire.
Michael will be the latest member of the Owen household to get in the saddle — his wife Louise rides and his daughter Gemma was recently selected for the Welsh under-12 dressage team.
“My wife’s going to teach me the basics of how to sit and how to stop and how to move left and right and everything else,” he told the Racing Post Weekender.
“Then once I’ve done a month or so of that I might pop to Manor House and learn the next stage of the process before I hopefully next year take part in a charity race.”
Michael bought his first racehorse Etienne Lady in 1999 and has since has become more involved with owning and breeding.
His most famous horse is Brown Panther, who won the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2011. During the interview he named the five-year-old son of Shirocco as the horse he’d most like to ride.
