Donkeys working in 117 more brick kilns in India will receive help from the international animal welfare organisation, the Brooke.
The charity, which provides treatment, training and community programmes throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America, strives to improve the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules and their owners.
This year, the Brooke will provide support to over 1,000 brick kilns across India, which will directly benefit 45,000 working horses and mules that are in great need.
In Utter Pradesh alone, there are more than 5,000 brick kilns and the demand for the Brooke’s services here is desperately high.
Dorcas Pratt, Brooke’s director of international development described the expansion as a “very positive step” for the charity.
“To ensure lasting change, the Brooke’s approach involves working closely with animal owners, their communities and local service providers to address the root causes of problems, as well as find affordable solutions,” she said.
“It’s the simple things that make all the difference, for example our work with cart makers has improved balance and stability of carts, which improves conditions for working animals,” she added.
