Australian eventer Sam Griffiths climbed from 25th after the dressage at Badminton Horse Trials last weekend — after tackling Giuseppe Della Chiesa’s gruelling cross-country and keeping his cool in the showjumping — to claim the 2014 title. Here are 9 things you need to know about eventing’s latest star

1. Sam is originally from Victoria in Australia

2. He emigrated to England in 1995 and worked for double Olympic gold medallist Matt Ryan

3. Sam is now based at Symphony Farm near Gillingham in Dorset

4. He is married to Lucy, who also events, and they have a 16-month-old son called Oliver

5. His best-known ride is Happy Times

6. Sam made appearances on the Australian eventing team at the World Equestrian Games in 2010 and the London Olympics in 2012

7. His previous notable results include 3rd Badminton and Burghley 2009 and 4th Badminton 2011 with Happy Times
