Dead horse found floating in a river in Northamptonshire

  • A dead horse has been found in a river in Northamptonshire.

It is the second horse to be discovered floating in the River Nene at Ditchford in a year.

It was found by a man walking his dog. Authorities believe it could have been in the water for up to nine weeks.

Wellingborough Borough Council told press it hoped the animal would be removed within a week.

“It can’t be left there so we will get a specialist company to remove it,” said a spokesman.

In January this year a dead horse was floating in the same river for more than a month, while authorities squabbled over who was responsible for removing it.

The horse, which died on 16 November, was in the stretch of river between Wellingborough and Rushden until 21 December.

Defra, the RSPCA, police and the Environment Agency all denied responsibility for removing the horse, the owner could not be traced and the land was rented to tenants who had been asked to leave, a Northamptonshire County Council spokesman told H&H at the time.

But the landowner was finally traced by the local authority and the body was removed five weeks later.
