Dressage riders and breeders worldwide are disappointed after the FEI World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) Dressage World Breeding Championship for Young Horses was cancelled.

The championships, postponed from August, were due to take place in Verden, Germany, on 9-13 December, with the world’s best five-, six- and seven-year-old horses battling it out for the prestigious titles.

Despite the fact additional measures were added to the event protocol to mitigate the risks from Covid-19 – and a negative coronavirus test result is required to enter Germany – the event organisers pulled the plug on Friday (27 November).

“It is precisely the international nature of the championships that makes it impossible to hold it,” said the Hanoverian Verband, which runs the championship.

“Further to several meetings between the FEI, WBFSH and the OC [organising committee], and despite the updated mitigation plan, the regrettable decision was made that the best and only option, in the face of this pandemic, is to cancel the event,” said Jan Pederson, president of the WBFSH.

Event director Wilken Treu added: “The safety of everyone involved is paramount and we can’t expect anyone to take long detours on their journey or to have problems returning home just before Christmas.”

Combinations from 23 nations were expected to compete at the championships, among them six British horses. Greg Sims and Waverley Fellini, and Jezz Palmer on King IV were due to represent Britain in the five-year-old section, while Tom Goode was selected to ride both Straight Horse De Milla and Jaristo in the six-year-old championship. Sarah Millis and Impressive VDC, and Luke Baber-Davies riding Ivoli-E were due to be Britain’s representatives in the seven-year-old ranks.

“This would have been my first big championship and we were really looking forward to it, so for it to be cancelled is a real shame,” Greg told H&H. “It’s a massive honour to have been selected, and it is something I have always wanted to do.

“It’s nice for the horse to get the praise and recognition as well; we have had him since he was three and he deserved the chance to show what he can do on a big stage,” he added of the Fürstenball x Sandro Hit gelding Fellini, who was bred in Warwickshire by Sara Longworth of Waverley Stud.

“He has had a great year, winning the novice gold championship, the five-year-old championship and the selection trial, and he was geared up and ready to go for Verden. I just hope we can produce the same sort of results in 2021.”

British-bred horses will be future show jumping champions, if the 2006 SEIB/ British Breeding Young Horse Evaluations are anything to go by. Six young British-bred show jumpers impressed a panel of judges, with Vacinimo – by celebrated sire Animo – declared champion. “The evaluators noted quality is steadily improving,” said Jan Roberts from British Breeding. “At present the majority of international show jumpers are mounted on foreign-bred horses but Britain is on track for establishing more of a market share.”

The six contenders earned their places at the finals by winning qualifiers across the country where soundness (two veterinary stages – static and dynamic), conformation, paces and jumping in hand and under saddle (suitability for show jumping) as well as temperament and trainability were all assessed.

An evaluation panel comprising Malcolm Pyrah, Caroline O Hara and Celia Clarke watched the four year-old finalists show their places in hand and under saddle before jumping a round of 1m jumps, including one double.

After much deliberation the top three were selected to be ridden by international show jumper Matthew Lanni, who rode each one in turn, awarding marks for their performance. “I rode some very nice horses today, they are what I would expect for four year olds, not over-produced but with the right foundations,” Lanni said afterwards.

Top honours went to Old Lodge’s British bred gelding Vacinimo (by Animo out of Facility by Sebastian) with reserve going to Jacke Mathieson’s gelding Furst Love (by Furstenreich out of St Pr St Aileen by Acord II). Master Jive Time Jubilee Third (by Monte Carlo out of Acton Easter Present by Louella Inschallah II) owned and bred by Debby North, took third place.

“British breeding programmes are becoming more educated and more informed,” said Jan Roberts. “Talented young horses are being spotted early and established and developed slowly.”

British-bred horses showed their prowess at the final qualifier of the SEIB British Breeding Young Horse Evaluations this weekend. The two top qualifying horses in each of the three disciplines (dressage, show jumping and eventing) were British bred, as was the highest scoring pony.

The evaluations took place at Catherston Stud, home to leading British bred stallions Catherson Dazzler and Catherston Liberator. “We have seen some superb horses presented for evaluation this year,” said master evaluator Lucinda Sims. “The consistent improvement in quality, presentation and turnout has been most encouraging and even better for being British-bred!”

Jan Rodgers, BEF head of equine development and breeding agreed: “We are really pleased with the improvement in standard this year. If you compare the scores from the past few years, the standard is steadily on the increase.”

In the dressage section, the two highest scoring horses were Deanes San Ciro Hit (Sandro Hit x Deanes Kings Courage by Dutch Courage) bred by Rosamund Perrin and Flayne Don Daiquiri (Don Gregory x Moet Bewes by Mohican) bred by Richard Stiles. Deanes San Ciro Hit is also a British Sports Horse Register champion stallion and Flayne Don Daiquiri is a British Warmblood Society (BWBS) graded stallion.

Top show jumpers were Vacinimo (Animo x Facility by Sebastian) bred by Old Lodge, and Master Jive Time Jubilee (Monte Carlo x Acton Easter Present by Louella Inschallah II) bred by Debby North.

Highest scoring eventers were Treason (Hand in Glove x Welton Lady by Welton Crackerjack) bred by Preci-Spark Ltd, and Cotton King (Mill Law x Royal Gem II by Sovereign King) bred by Hazel Bramley.

The top scoring pony in the newly introduced pony section was also British-bred Tynycae Sand Martin (Wurlitzer x Tynycae Goldfinch by Sarnau Valentine), bred by Serena Pincus.

In addition, the highest scoring mares Fine Feathers (Hercorse x Regal Venture by Motivate), bred by Claire Marie Richardson and Caribbean (Cardinar x Freya by Florestan), bred by Paul Friday were also bred in the UK.

The highest scoring horses in each section will be invited to prestigious discipline specific finals around the country this summer.

A good standard of four-year-olds was presented for the first SEIB/British Breeding young horse evaluation of the year at Heart of England EC.

Vin and Elizabeth Jones, who have supported the initiative since its inception, had three home-breds forward. And one, Treason, gained the highest score of the day from evaluators Lucinda Sims, Mike Florence and Jane Nixon.

The gelding by the French Thoroughbred Hand In Glove out of the 1996 Burghley Young Event horse champion Welton Lady, by Welton Crackerjack, impressed the judges, gaining a score of 9.16 for his paces and a final mark of 8.5.

Richard Stiles, successful in this series with Flayne World Magic two years ago, returned with his home-bred BWBS graded stallion Flayne Don Daquiri, who gained the highest score, 7.8, in the dressage section, ridden by Verity Franks.

The chestnut by Don Gregory out of Moet Bewes, by the Danish Warmblood Mohican, has already qualified for the summer novice regional finals. He also has his first foals on the ground this year.

“He loves work and learns very quickly,” said Richard, who left his Yorkshire home at 5am to travel to Staffordshire for the evaluation.

Justin Lloyd’s Dutch-bred stallion Valeur S headed the show jumping section under Zoe Taylor, showing his talent in loose jumping to score 8.88 marks in this section.

Two ponies contested the new dressage and show jumping pony sections. Machno Showtime, by the Sport Pony Studbook stallion Carregcoch Bleddyn, gained performance and breeders diplomas for owner Nicola Slater and breeder Merion Jones.

Old Lodge, second and third in the show jumping final last year with Tiffany and Twilight, gained the highest score in both dressage and show jumping at Crockstead EC with Verbal Response. The AES-graded stallion by the Hanoverian Espri was bred at Old Lodge.

“His career is undecided because he’s capable of either job and could well be a better dressage horse,” said Corinna Duncan from the Berkshire stud.

“An opportunity too good to miss” was what Paul McClaughlan thought when the three-year-old Pokey’s Bally Milo came into the sale ring at Duckhurst in Kent. The bay gelding by the former eventing Thoroughbred More Pokey gained high jumping marks in the eventing section under Sam Penn, stable jockey for Golden Cross EC, where Bally Milo is based.

“He’s so rideable and does a lovely job,” said Golden Cross owner Ian Bareham.

The top horses competing in the South Essex Insurance Brokers/British Breeding Young Horse Evaluation series will qualify for new individual finals to be held at major competitions for their specific sport.

The finals for this popular series have previously been held at the Royal Show and the Horse of the Year Show. This year the dressage horses will qualify for a special class at Dressage at Hickstead (26 July), eventers will qualify for their final at the Mitsubishi Motors Hartpury Three Day Event and Summer Festival (12/13 August) and show jumpers will qualify for a final at the Arena UK Festival of Showjumping (14 September).

The decision to move the finals to separate venues was made following feedback from previous participants. Jan Rogers explains: “Although prestigious, participants felt that the Royal Show did not reach the right target market for their horses. They wanted their horses to be on view to riders, breeders and potential buyers within their discipline.”

Horses that score more than 70% in their assessment will receive a British Breeding Performance Diploma and the top horses from each evaluation go forwards to the final. Owners have two more opportunities to qualify their horses at Catherston on 25 May or Rowallan in Scotland on 1 June.

Allround recreational horses and ponies are to be included in British Breeding’s Young Horse Evaluations this year. The new ‘recreational’ section is designed to recognise horses that are suitable for non-professional riders and temperament will be an important consideration in the evaluation procedure. A section for sports ponies has also been included in this year’s series.

The South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB)/British Breeding Young Horse Evaluation Series has always assessed potential soundness, trainability, jumping ability, paces and temperament in four-year-old horses and ponies. These assessments provide data about stallions and mares to enable identification of good stock at the earliest possible stage and supply reliable material for research and development. They also indicate where quality lies in individual horses and expose Britain’s most talented young horses.

For 2006 the series has expanded to include both recreational horses and ponies and sports ponies. “It was always our intention to introduce ponies,” says Jan Rodgers, BEF Head of Equine Development. “We want to encourage recognition of Britain’s good sports ponies both for the UK market and abroad.”

The decision to introduce a section for ‘recreational’ horses is a pilot scheme. “These horses are bred for a different target market,” explains Rodgers. “But whilst they are not usually destined for international competition, there is demand to have them evaluated anyway. There will be a greater emphasis on temperament in the evaluations as, by and large, they will not be for professional riders.”

British Breeding is positive about the 2006 series. “Breeding in the UK is going from strength to strength and in order to continue this there needs to be heightened awareness,” Rodgers claims, adding that the series is not looking for a finished product but the willingness and temperament to participate.

The highest scoring nine horses from each section of this year’s SEIB/British Breeding Young Horse Evaluation Series have been invited to compete for the prestigious titles of most promising dressage horse, most promising showjumper and most promising event horse at next week’s Royal Show (3-5 July).

Each of the four-year-olds will be assessed and marked by a team of judges, who will be looking for potential to go to the top in the specific discipline the horse has qualified for.

The evaluators will mark each horse out of 10 for its veterinary soundness, paces, natural ability for the sport and its conformation and suitability. The top three scoring horses will then be ridden by a guest rider, who will also mark out of 10. The scores will be aggregated to achieve the final positions.

The judging team will comprise showing producer Richard Ramsey and vet Jane Nixon, who will be joined by Ferdi Eilberg (dressage), Derek Ricketts (SJ) and Yogi Breisner (eventing). Jeanette Brakewell has been invited to ride the young event horses, with dressage trainer Eric Thielgaard riding the dressage horse. The show jumping guest rider is still to be confirmed.

If any of the finalists listed below are unable to attend then horses currently on the reserve list will be invited to compete at Stoneleigh.

At her home venue, the mare Catherston What A Dream became the highest scorer in this year’s SEIB/British Breeding Young Horse Evaluations.

By the German sire Wolkensdream out of Catherston Dream Machine, a winner at the 2002 evaluation, What A Dream — who took one of only two elite mare awards in the series — gained a total of 8.45. She is already graded with the British Warm Blood Society and is also an SHB (GB) head studbook mare.

“She’ll eventually compete in dressage, but she needs time to mature,” said owner/breeder Jennie Loriston-Clarke.

Another high-scoring horse was the stallion Uventos, ridden by Jodie Lister, who gained 8.27. Uventos, by Flemmingh out of a Wellington mare, was acquired unbacked in November through the contacts who also found Jodie’s big tour dressage horse, Nicky.

Kingswell Ballyhill, by Mayhill, headed the eventing section from the Liberator gelding Free Flow, owned by Catherston secretary Fiona Boyne in partnership with rider Pip Peters.

Ballyhill was bought from Devon breeder Judith Ireland in November by Andrew Collins for his twin brother, Nicholas, to ride. His dam, Kingswell Dancing Spirit, was a 2002 show jumping evaluation finalist.

“He has a lovely nature and plenty of natural ability. So far, so good,” said Nicholas, who took the award for the best handler at this venue.

At Heart of England, Checkleybank Monarch and Polish rider Paulina Ciechecka headed the dressage and show jumping sections. The bay gelding by the Dutch sire Monte Carlo is out of a mare by Dutch Gold. Paulina, who has worked for Paralympian Lee Pearson for three years, bought Monarch last July.

She said: “He was sent to me because he was quite naughty and his owner wanted to sell him. I took a chance and I’m really pleased with the way he’s come on.”

Lesley Peyton Gilbert qualified ZV Sandros for the dressage final. The German-bred stallion, by the Oldenburger Sunny Boy, gained 9.25 in the veterinary section.

West Wilts, the final venue, ran a day for potential eventers and Carl Hester’s former grand prix dressage ride Donnersong could be turning into a dual-purpose sire.

The highest-scoring horse, Kanga’s Song, is by Donnersong out of an Irish-bred intermediate event mare. Ridden by Gloucestershire-based Michael Jackson, Kanga’s Song was bred by Michael’s partner, Ellie Gaskell, and is owned by her father, Chris.

The following day, Michael and Joy Jones’s Dutch-bred stallion Ulster, by Burgraaf, gained high marks in the jumping as well as a place in the dressage final.

“I got the ride through Tessa Clark at West Kington Stud. I’ve only had him on my yard for about six weeks,” said Michael, winner of last year’s event horse section with the stallion Up With The Lark.

Daniel Henson took the best handler award for his own Lannis Lad, who was having his first outing. The good-looking grey is by Broadstone Landmark and was bred by Anne Kirk.

“I always wanted to own this horse — there’s something special about him. When he came on the market, I snapped him up,” said Daniel, who manages a small competition yard.

Another with a good veterinary score was the Accondy gelding Varston Ottoman Empire, bred by Mark Philpott and ridden by Mark Corbett.

The top dressage was Claudine Bichard and Niki Hare’s Dimaggio mare, Mezzanine. She is no stranger to success after being young stock champion and overall reserve at last year’s British Dressage Breeding Championships.

Sarah Ridd took the best handler award for the stallion Weymarsh Maximus, who scored highly in the jumping as well as gaining dressage qualification.

The British-bred son of Donnerschlag is the foundation stallion for the Surrey-based stud run by Sarah’s mother, Janice Cahill. He was bought as an eight-week-old foal with his dam through an advert in Horse & Hound.

Potential eventers are leading the way in this year’s BEF/SEIB Young Horse Evaluation series. Halfway through the series, four of Preci-Spark’s home-breds are heading for the final at the Royal Show after Vin and Liz Jones’s horses dominated at Richmond and Sheepgate.

Trequite, by Primitive Rising, and Trescothick, by the French stallion Hand In Glove, are at the top of the list. Out of a mare by the Irish Sport Horse Puissance, Trequite is a half-brother to Trebetherick (pictured), last year’s Burghley young event horse four-year-old and evaluation champion.

Trelights and Tregawn, also from the Preci-Spark stable, qualified at Sheepgate. Trelights, a mare by national hunt sire Double Trigger, is the second foal for the Welton Crackerjack mare Welton Lady, who was the 1996 Burghley young event horse champion. Tregawn, by Primitive Rising, is out of the Ben Faerie mare who produced the colt Trefry, who passed an initial assessment at the recent SHB(GB) grading.

At Richmond, the mare Millie On Air qualified for her owner/breeders Sue and Nicola Browne. Millie is by Nicola’s advanced event stallion Mill Law and out of the Primitive Rising mare Triple Echo.

At Rowallan in Scotland, the scoreboard was headed by Cathpair High Hopes, another from the eventing section. High Hopes, ridden by Caroline Powell, is by the recently deceased Accondy out of a Royal Fountain mare with Ozymandias bloodlines. His owner, Jane Bell, started her breeding programme five years ago after moving to the Borders.

“I have another by Accondy destined for the racetrack, but this one was bred for eventing. We’re looking forward to competing him next year,” said Jane.

The show jumpers at Rowallan were headed by Uptown Girl, bred by Mary Turnbull. Ridden by Jennie Herries, Uptown Girl is by Concorde out of an Ahorn Mare.

Only one mare has so far gone home with elite status, which is awarded to mares gaining an overall mark of eight or more. Tiffany II, ridden by Georgie Strutton, gained the highest mark of the day at Crockstead in Sussex in the section for show jumpers. Bred by Old Lodge, she is by the Grand Veneur son Veneur Du Montois out of Lefanie, by Damiro. Lefanie is also the dam of Little Lefanie, a former winner of the best British-bred five-year-old. Last year, Tiffany produced a foal by the French Olympic show jumper Barbarian, but she is now destined for competition.

Witness, by the grand prix dressage stallion Sheepcote Wurlitzer, was the first dressage horse to qualify for the final. Witness was bred by his owner/rider Nicola Austin out of a Russian-bred Trakehner mare by Hockey.

Dressage breeder Katy Holder-Vale’s stallion Elroon qualified for the show jumping final at Sheepgate. By Escudo, Elroon was bought as a licensed two-year-old from Germany and has since passed his performance test.

“He now has his first foals and has qualified for the Panacur national young dressage horse final,” said Katy, of Witcham House Stud in Cambridgeshire.

Brendon Hill stud open day

Diana and Michael Scott are opening the doors of their famous Brendon Hill stud in Somerset on Sunday (26 June) to raise funds for the Air Ambulance and Devon & Somerset Stag Hounds.

The afternoon will begin with lunch (£20 per ticket) followed by a parade of the stud’s stallions and young stock, starting at around 3pm, plus a walk round the mares and foals. All four of the stud’s sires, Hot Rumour, Its Without Doubt, Ben’s Affaere and Future Role, will be taking part. Three of the stud’s stallions carry the bloodlines of the stud’s foundation sire Ben Faerie, who has sired many successful event horses including Ginny Elliot’s Priceless and Pippa Funnell’s Walk on Star.

Now in its third year, the SEIB BEF Young Horse Evaluation Series (YHES), which evaluates young sport horses for potential soundness, trainability, jumping ability, paces and temperament, continues to go from strength to strength.

The series was developed to recognise four-year-old horses with the potential to become international competition horses of the future in the Olympic sports of dressage, show jumping and eventing.

Changes to this year’s scheme mean that although a horse may be entered for both the potential dressage and potential show jumping sections, any horse entered for these sections may not also be entered for the potential eventing section at the same venue.

Celia Clarke, chairman of the YHES committee, explains: “The decision to prevent horses for contesting all three sections at one venue was to prevent a young horse from having too many demands placed on it within a short space of time.

“It should also be recognised that although type varies widely within each discipline, the specialist show jumping and dressage horse will, by the nature of its preferred discipline, not be the of same type as an eventer.

“Potential four-star eventers will have a different movement to a potential advanced dressage horse and will produce a different shape over a fence to a potential international show jumper. They must also be able to show an indication of the ability to gallop.”

This year’s evaluations, which will be judged by individuals from the BEF’s pool of 54 trained evaluators, will take place at the following venues:

The top-scoring 12 horses in each discipline will go forward to championship finals at the Royal Show (4-6 July) and any horse gaining a score of seven or more will receive a performance diploma, rosette and cash premium.
