H&H tracks down where the equestrian world’s biggest names are based — and discovers why you’ll want to head there, too

1. Gloucestershire

Celeb-spotting: Carl Hester, Charlotte Dujardin and Laura Tomlinson fly the flag for dressage, Nick Gauntlett and Zara Phillips for eventing and Nigel Twiston-Davies and Jonjo O’Neill for racing.

In vogue: South Gloucestershire is especially sought after, says Rupert Sturgis of Knight Frank, but the Hartpury area is also fast becoming a serious contender, according to Liz Langford of Fox Grant.

Property prices: Near Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh, a good home with five stables and five-10 acres costs £2-3 million, according to Rupert Sweeting of Knight Frank. The Hartpury area is somewhat cheaper.

Competitions and shows: Eventing reigns supreme, with Badminton, Gatcombe and Hartpury International Horse Trials, while polo is at the Cirencester Park and Beaufort Polo Clubs and racing is at Cheltenham.

Where to train: “AM Dressage, the home of Matt Frost and Adam Kemp, attracts riders from all over the UK and Europe,” says Liz. Training is also available at Hartpury College, Talland School of Equitation and Summerhouse, among others.

Where to hack: Gloucestershire offers plenty of good outriding, especially in some estates, such as Cirencester Park, says Rupert Sturgis of Knight Frank.

Hunting matters: 10 packs hunt in the county, including the Vale of the White Horse (VWH), the Berkeley, the Heythrop and the Duke of Beaufort’s.

2. Hampshire

Celeb-spotting: Showjumper Peter Charles and dressage supremo Jennie Loriston-Clarke both live locally.

In vogue: The New Forest is always a favourite for its scenic hacking, as is the Meon Valley, with the countryside near Alton being particularly popular for the Hampshire Hunt (HH).

Property prices: You can expect to pay upwards of £2.5 million for an equestrian property with a large American barn,well-fenced paddocks, and quality outbuildings, according to Philip Blanchard of Jackson-Stops & Staff.

Competitions and shows: Somerley Park International Horse Trials is the top eventing competition, with other events held at Mattingley and Tweseldown Racecourse. In addition, you will find racing at Tweseldown and point-to-pointing at Hackwood Park — plus polo at the New Forest Polo Club. Crofton Manor stages showjumping, dressage and showing competitions.

Where to train: Crofton Manor holds regular showjumping and dressage clinics, GB Equestrian offers dressage clinics and Rogate Equestrian Centre, on the Hampshire to West Sussex border, provides tuition in most disciplines. Tweseldown also offers cross-country schooling.

Where to hack: “Great hacking comes in abundance in Hampshire,” says Philip, with the Meon Valley Trail, Queen Elizabeth Country Park and the vast expanse of the New Forest offering miles of car-free riding.

Hunting matters: Eight packs hunt in Hampshire, including the New Forest Hounds and the HH.

3. Dorset

Celeb-spotting: William Fox-Pitt is the local star.

In vogue: The most sought-after villages among riders include Cattistock, Cerne Abbas and Buckland Newton, plus the area around Beaminster. In the north of the county, Motcombe is popular with recreational riders.

Property prices: A medium-size family house with seven acres and basic outbuildings costs from £780,000, according to Fred Cook of Jackson-Stops & Staff. A large main house, with a small cottage, some stables and up to 10 acres of land commands more than £1 million.

Competitions and shows: There’s a lively local circuit with showjumping and dressage competitions at Kingston Maurward College, the Dorset Showground and Parley Court Equestrian Centre. You’ll find horse trials at Bovington Equestrian and Bricky Farm, and three large shows — Gillingham and Shaftesbury, Melplash, as well as the Dorset County Show.

Where to train: Moreton Stables and South Coast Equestrian both hold regular dressage and showjumping clinics, Bovington Equestrian provides private tuition for experienced and competition riders while Kingston Maurward College offers diplomas in horse care and management.

Where to hack: Miles of bridleways and quiet country lanes criss-cross the county. Among the longer rides are the Wessex Ridgeway, the North Dorset Trailway and the Castleman Trailway.

Hunting matters: Dorset counts eight packs, with the vale country hunts being particularly popular. Rupert Sweeting of Knight Frank picks the Cattistock as one of the top three hunts among all the counties featured in these pages.

4. Sussex

Celeb-spotting: Showjumping’s Shane and Chloe Breen are based at Hickstead. Racehorse trainer Gary Moore is at Lower Beeding and Nick Gifford is at Findon — where Tina Cook also lives.

In vogue: The South Downs and Ashdown Forest are particularly sought after among recreational riders, the area around Hickstead draws showjumping riders, while polo players want to be near Cowdray Park, according to Chris Spofforth of Savills.

Property prices: Chris quotes £1.5-2 million for a good five-bedroom farmhouse, with five-10 acres and decent equestrian facilities, depending on location.

Competitions and shows: From the Derby Meeting to the Royal International Horse Show, Hickstead is at the heart of the equestrian calendar. Other county highlights include the Gold Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club, Glorious Goodwood at Goodwood racecourse and the South of England Show at Ardingly.

Where to train: Coombelands Equestrian in Pulburough has excellent facilities, according to Katherine Watters of The Buying Solution. Other equestrian centres, such as Chelwood, in Nutley, also offer high-level tuition and clinics.

Where to hack: The South Downs Way and the Downs Link offer a lifetime of scenic riding. Should these not suffice, the Worth Way takes in the beauty of the High Weald, while several coastal areas, including the Witterings and Thanet, offer beach riding. Best of all, says Katherine: “Many local pubs now have tie-ups and head collars ready for impromptu visitors.”

Hunting matters: Six packs hunt across the area, including the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt, the Crawley and Horsham and the East Sussex and Romney Marsh.

5. Devon

Celeb-spotting: This is eventing heartland, with both Mary King and Lucy Wiegersma based in the county.

In vogue: Exmoor and Dartmoor are firm favourites with equestrian buyers, followed by the South Hams.

Property prices: In Honiton, on the county’s eastern fringes, prices for a good home with five stables and five-10 acres are around £1.25-1.5 million, according to Rupert Sweeting. The further west you go, the more value you get for your money.

Competitions and shows: The Golden Horseshoe Ride takes place in Exmoor, straddling the border between Devon and Somerset. The local county show is also “very big”, according to Rupert Sweeting. Other events include horse trials and showjumping at Bicton Arena, plus racing at Exeter and Newton Abbot racecourses.

Where to train: Bicton College runs regular dressage and showjumping clinics, as well as offering an equine studies course, while Southcott Farm in Winkleigh was previously voted by Horse & Hound readers as one of their favourite venues for cross-country schooling.

Where to hack: Exmoor and Dartmoor alone provide seemingly endless opportunities for off-road hacking, but the county also has many trails (such as the Dittisham and the Tarka) and free-riding areas (Cookworthy Moor, Haldon Forest Park and Woodbury Common).

Hunting matters: Hunting is superlative with 18 packs, including the Exmoor Foxhounds and the Dulverton Farmers — and of course there’s the Devon & Somerset Staghounds.

6. Yorkshire

Celeb-spotting: Yorkshire is the cradle of the Whitaker dynasty, with John and William both based near Huddersfield and Ellen and Joe near Barnsley. Team GBR endurance rider Catriona Moon also lives in the area, as do a number of racehorse trainers, including Richard Fahey and Mark Johnston, who are based in Middleham.

In vogue: The pretty countryside between Wetherby, Harrogate and Ilkley is always sought after, although some riders prefer the wilder expanses — and cheaper acres — further north. Another popular area is Malton, just by the Howardian Hills.

Property prices: Yorkshire is huge and prices vary enormously depending on location. Being higher in the York to Wetherby corridor, they go down in West Yorkshire. Near Malton you can expect to spend about £1-1.25 million for a house with about five stables and five-10 acres.

Competitions and shows: Bramham is one of the biggest events in the local calendar, but the Great Yorkshire Show, with its showing and showjumping rings, is equally popular — as is racing at York.

Where to train: The Yorkshire Riding Centre and the Richmond Equestrian Centre both hold clinics, as well as offering private hire of their facilities.

Where to hack: With two National Parks (North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales) and a portion of a third (Peak District), the area is criss-crossed by trails — including the 205-mile-long Pennine Bridleway route linking Derbyshire to Cumbria.

Hunting matters: Hunting in Yorkshire is good, thanks to its 21 varied packs. Knight Frank’s Rupert Sweeting names the Badsworth & Bramham Moor and the Middleton as his favourites.

The Tour de France effect: cause for rider concern?

Riders are warned to take extra care on the roads in coming weeks as cycling is expected to see a boom in interest due to the Tour de France.

Horse owners have told H&H that while they enjoyed the event coming to the UK, some have concerns about the growing popularity of the sport.

The event visited Yorkshire and London earlier this month (5-7 July).

The British Horse Society (BHS) said it was “too early” to say whether they will see any incidents off the back of the Tour de France, but warned riders to be aware.

“Some riders have expressed concerns over the increase in the number of people cycling in the Yorkshire area, but on the whole we have found both riders and cyclists have been receptive to advice,” said a spokesman.

“We feel the test will be in coming weeks when, as we saw with Box Hill after London 2012, more cyclists will want to experience riding iconic climbs from the Tour.”

After the Olympics cycling experienced a boom in popularity, with British Cycling seeing its membership rise by 50% in a year.

Last year two accidents involving bikes — one in which a horse died, the other in which a rider ended up in intensive care — prompted calls for cycling’s governing body to improve safety.

One of the accidents was due to a “sportive” — a mass unregulated ride with hundreds of cyclists.

The BHS contacted British Cycling asking them to regulate rides better and worked with the organisation to prepare a safety leaflet.

There is also information on the body’s website for bike riders.

“We’ve always had cyclists, but the volume has been building and it can be frightening,” said Susan Midgely, BHS access officer for north-west Yorkshire, who has been talking to local cycling groups.

H&H reader Elena Myers lives near York and saw the Tour pass through, but believes there should be more awareness from cyclists.

“The number of cyclists in the area has increased hugely, which is fantastic but I have some concerns,” she told H&H.

“I’ve lost count of the number of times in the past six months that a cyclist has come whizzing around a blind corner or those that will sneak up behind you and wonder why the horse spooks as they pass.”

Fellow reader Jackie Bruce Coultas added: “It is horrendous driving round the narrow lanes of Keighley with a trailer at the moment as everyone is riding the Tour de France route.”

Jayne Gingell has also seen a spike in cycling.

“We live on bike route 51 in Suffolk and there has definitely be an increase of cyclists on our lane,” she said.

Tour de France influx worries Yorkshire riders

Riders in the Yorkshire Dales are concerned about coping with the increasing volume of cyclists since it was announced that this summer’s Tour de France will start in the region on the 5-6 July.

Although the tourist hotspot has always been a popular biking area, cyclists are now flocking to ride the 78-mile route of the iconic race.

“We’ve always had cyclists, but the volume has been building up since last year, and it can be frightening,” said Susan Midgley, British Horse Society (BHS) access officer for north-west Yorkshire.

“It’s not just the pleasure riders but the competition people. These big groups have their heads down and keep coming fast without warning.”

Ms Midgley is raising awareness to encourage cyclists to behave appropriately around horses — particularly communicating that they are coming past.

The BHS is issuing leaflets and speaking to cycling groups.

Sheila Pilling runs a livery yard for 40 horses at Wilkinsons Farm, East Marton.

“The majority of cyclists are brilliant — they don’t want to get injured,” she said. “But we are warning riders to keep their wits about them as the number of cyclists keeps rising.

“We’ve had a couple of incidents where a cyclist has swerved to avoid a horse, and ended up in a ditch and the rider also fell off.”

Last year H&H reported on the boom in popularity of cycling since the 2012 Olympics, and the problems this causes for riders.

Following 2 serious accidents involving horses being spooked by cycling races — 1 in which a horse died — the BHS called for improvements in safety and further education for cyclists.

Kate Bower, a leisure rider who is on the committee of Skipton Horse Trials, said that “unofficial races are the biggest problem”.

“Mostly there is mutual understanding between cyclists and riders,” she said. “But it’s the large groups and races that spook horses. They need police, road closures and advance warning notices, so that riders can plan their own route accordingly.”

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority has issued a cycling supplement in its newspaper The Visitor 2014, with a small amount of safety information for cyclists meeting horses.

New bloodhound pack in North Yorkshire

A new pack of bloodhounds has been started in North Yorkshire.

Former Bilsdale joint-masters Harry Stephenson and Judith Skilbeck have set up the Highmoor Bloodhounds.

Kennels have been built on Mr Stephenson’s farm near York and they have drafted hounds from the Readyfield, the Coakham and the Southdown and Eridge. Mr Stephenson will hunt hounds.

Mrs Skilbeck said they would hunt one day a week from next season, but plan to take it “as it comes” this year.

New competition venue opens in South Yorkshire

A new South Yorkshire competition venue opened its doors to riders for first time last Sunday (30 October).

Derby House Stables, in Mattersey, Doncaster, hosted an unaffiliated showjumping competition with classes up to 1.20m.

Former pony eventing European medallist Lindsey McDonald is based at the equestrian centre, which boasts three brand new arenas plus an all-weather dressage area.

Weekly dressage and showjumping events are planned and an eight-acre cross-country track is also on the cards.

Owner Juliet Harrison said: “We have created a lovely setting for the local community and it was good to see so many people having a wonderful day.”

International showjumping returns to South Yorkshire

International showjumping will return to South Yorkshire next April.

The CSI*** Yorkshire International Showjumping Event, at Sheffield’s Motor Point Arena, is the brainchild of former Bramham Horse Trials organiser Debora Homewood and has the backing of the regional tourist board — Welcome to Yorkshire.

The event (22-24 April) will run for three years initially and in 2011 will offer more than £143,000 in rider prize-money.

“Many showjumpers are from Yorkshire so it seemed appropriate to be in the thick of it,” said Ms Homewood.

The date for the international became available earlier this summer following the demise of the British Open — run since 2003, first at the Sheffield Hallam Arena and latterly at the NEC, Birmingham.

“I don’t want people to think we are trying to replicate the British Open. I’ve some whacky ideas,” said Ms Homewood.

Spectators will get “much more for their money than to just sit and watch”, she added.

Forty riders have been invited to compete, including the top 20 Brits. The show will also host the winter national finals, the British Showjumping (BS) winter A and B — renamed the “Welcome to Yorkshire Jump” — the winter C and winter amateur final.

Rider John Whitaker said: “It’s wonderful news. Yorkshire is steeped in showjumping history and this is a great venue.”

And a BS spokesman added: “We are in desperate need of top-level international shows, for our own performance requirements and to showcase our sport at that level. This is very, very welcome.”

Four horses killed in road accident in West Yorkshire

Police are appealing for information after the theft of gates from a field resulted in four horses being killed in a pile-up on the A1.

Three horses were killed outright and another had to be put down as a result of its injuries.

Five vehicles were involved in the smash on the southbound carriageway near Ferrybridge Services in West Yorkshire, in the early hours of yesterday (Sunday 20 September).

No people were seriously injured.

The animals were among 11 horses that had escaped from a field two miles from the crash site after thieves stole two gates on Saturday.

The other horses — all of which belonged to Timbertops Equestrian Centre, at Wentbridge, North Yorkshire — had been rounded up.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw people acting suspiciously in the area or knows anything about the theft to contact them.

PC Lee Brook of Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “The theft of these gates has resulted in a serious collision which tragically ended with the loss of four animals.

“Thankfully none of the occupants of the vehicles was injured, but they were very shaken up. The potential consequences of the thieves’ actions don’t bear thinking about.

“I am appealing to anyone who saw anything suspicious on Saturday evening or Sunday morning or who knows anything about the thefts to contact police.

“I also appeal to people at local auction marts or agricultural sales to be on their guard against purchasing metal gates and contact police if they have any suspicions about where they have come from.

“The monetary value of these gates is very little compared to the devastation caused on Sunday morning and we are determined to find out who was responsible for the theft.”

Maltby and District riding club at war with village residents

Local residents of a village in south Yorkshire are at loggerheads with a riding club over a planning decision to allow the club to use greenbelt land next to their homes.

Maltby and District riding club, which has existed for over 60 years, had to relocate two miles away from its long-term location to a field in the village of Tickhill.

Despite council approval, they met fierce opposition from residents.

Chairman Louise Elliot said the battle with residents was both petty and wearing for the riders.

“We had to move because the previous landowner expanded his livery business and wanted his field. The council said we could use the new site for 28 days a year, and we are well within this,” she said.

“But residents complained to the council about jumps in the field and having horses and 4x4s in their village. We were forced to get planning permission, which was granted this July.

“But they continue to campaign, harass visitors and divert traffic away from our events.”

Doncaster council planning committee stated in July: “The proposal is not considered to significantly impact on the greenbelt or the neighbouring dwellings” — and has declined to comment further.

But resident Frank Firth, 71, was unrepentant: “The number of lorries, 4x4s and trailers is very disruptive to locals and the environment. This week, they had 195 vehicles on the field with 632 vehicle movements.

“We’re not objecting to the club — the fact they want to take up sport is creditable. The problem is traffic.”

Ms Elliott added: “We’ve got absolutely no intention of moving.”

Donkey rescued from fire put down due to trauma

A donkey who was rescued from a fire in North Yorkshire last month has died of stress.

On Saturday 18 July two donkeys were saved from a fire at a stable block off Seamer Road in Scarborough.

A stable block and a horse trailer were set alight in the suspected arson attack.

One donkey, called Prince, was rescued by firefighters but was put down last week after suffering from trauma after the attack.

The two-year-old donkey had stopped eating and became afraid to go out of his stable.

Owner Rachel Phillips told the Scarborough Evening News: “The fire really affected Prince. On the one occasion I managed to take him for a walk he freaked out at an ambulance siren. He cowered next to a tree and wouldn’t move.

“We were force-feeding him in hope, but he became very weak. In the end I had to call the vet out to put him to sleep.”

The other donkey is fine.

South Yorkshire and South Staffordshire hit by tack thieves

Police across Yorkshire are investigating a spate of tack thefts, with Western, Spanish and polo saddles among the goods taken.

Overnight 14-15 July 10 saddles and numerous other items of tack were stolen in Moss, Doncaster.

Among the haul were three Western saddles and bridles, an Anky Salinero dressage saddle and bridle and four polo saddle sets.

On the same night in Branton, Doncaster, highly unusual Spanish tack was stolen, including two Fhoenix saddles and a pierced leather Zaldi bridle.

Joanne Kennedy at South Yorkshire Police told H&H that a number of the thefts had been of tack left in stables, secured only with a padlock.

“Padlocks are no deterrent. The thieves just use bolt croppers,” she said. She suggested that yards concerned about safety should contact their local crime prevention officer who can advise on improving security.

“But the most important thing you can do is postcode all your tack and equipment. We have had cases where tack and rugs that had the owner’s postcode written on them were left behind by thieves,” she said.

And nearly £2000 of horse equipment was stolen in South Staffordshire earlier this week.

Thieves broke into a container in Orchard Lane, Shareshill on Monday, 27 July.

Four bridles, a pair of Wolsey clippers, fiver sets of clipper blades, a chainsaw, generator as well as feed supplements and equine pain killers were taken, worth over £1,600.

Yorkshire air ambulance gets £6,000 point-to-point boost

Jockeys, trainers, owners and point-to-point fans across Yorkshire have raised more than £6,000 to aid the life-saving work carried out by the county’s air ambulance.

The helicopter has been scrambled several times from its base at Leeds-Bradford airport over the past year to rescue riders who have been injured on the racecourse, on the gallops or out hunting.

The campaign was launched in January at the Yorkshire Area Point-to-Point Club meeting at Sheriff Hutton and money has been raised through sponsorship, gate money, a bucket collection and a barbeque.

Riding injuries first aid course to raise funds for Air Ambulance

A evening of specialist first aid for riders is being held at Harrogate, Yorkshire on Monday (14 April).

The event, which will raise money for the Great North Air Ambulance, is being organised by eventer Joanna Joyce Gray, who fell while hunting with the West of Yore in January and had to be airlifted to hospital.

She said she was lucky because friends with her had mobile phone reception and were able to call for help, but worries what she would have done had the roles reversed.

“Like so many people I have not got round to doing any first aid training, now is the time to change this,” she said.

Joanna has worked with the Great North Air Ambulance Service to put together an evening of first aid instruction tailored to dealing with riding-related injuries — including spinal, chest and head injuries and dealing with bleeding and broken bones.

Ancient horse bones found by archeologists

Archeologists are trying to unravel the enigma surrounding the discovery of ancient horse bones found buried in limekilns in the National Park.

The Ingleborough Archaeology Group discovered neat piles of almost identical sets of bones in kilns that had been abandoned and backfilled.

Group chairman David Johnson voiced his surprise: “These were not animals that fell in or were thrown in.

“There are many accounts of animals and other items being buried in the foundations of buildings while they were being constructed, but I have never found any examples of this happening as a closure ritual – this seems to be unique to these kilns,” he said.

The Ingleborough Archaeology Group have suggested that some form of ritual was performed in order to ward off evil spirits.

It is thought these kilns were in use between about 1620 and 1670, a period when primitive ritual activity was rife.

Yet, Robert White, Senior Conservation Archaeologist within the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority said:“Why these particular bones were being buried in a kiln that was being backfilled after use is something else.

“We would be very interested to hear from anyone who has come across similar activity.”

It’s “Great” in Yorkshire

Most counties have their own major show and the Great Yorkshire (12-14 July) certainly lives up to its name. The show was first run near York in 1838 and has been at its permanent showground in Harrogate since 1951. The showground is huge, spanning 250 acres and with seven miles of roads.

A day out at the show is a “must” for most self-respecting Yorkshire people and each year, more than a million make the trek. They have every rural attraction imaginable — including a hound show — but the biggest crowds usually end up at the equestrian arenas. They can watch top-class jumping in the main ring, while the showing is only a short stroll away.
