She moved up from the role of deputy chief sub editor to take over as dressage, sport horse breeding and products editor in September 2017. Her time on Horse & Hound staff finished in October 2023 when she moved to a new job outside the business, although she continues to contribute to Horse & Hound on a freelance basis.

During her time with Horse & Hound, Polly has reported from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 – fulfilling a lifelong dream in doing so – as well as the 2022 World Championships, the 2018 World Equestrian Games, the 2019 and 2017 European Championships, and the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. Her reporting has also taken her to various other major international shows including the World Cup Finals in 2019 and 2022, as well as Aachen and Rotterdam CHIOs. She still has a love for polo, occasionally swapping dressage for a stint of polo reporting, and has also covered international eventing and showjumping, including at the Tokyo Olympics.

While not from a horsey family, Polly has ridden from the age of seven. She competed a huge variety of horses and ponies across all disciplines as she grew up, and worked on several yards. Originally from Devon, Polly was a keen member of the South Devon (West) branch of the Pony Club, going on to instruct for the branch. She has always had a particular love for dressage, following the sport avidly, and aged 14 she announced to her parents and teachers that she wanted to be the dressage editor at Horse & Hound one day.

Polly was captain of the very successful equestrian team at the University of Birmingham — admitting that her degree in English Literature played second fiddle to her riding! After graduating with a 2:1, she moved to London to pursue her career in equestrian journalism, gaining a postgraduate diploma in magazine journalism.

Polly lives in Surrey and while not in a position to own a horse currently, enjoys catch rides whenever possible.

</dc:description>

</dc:description>

Don’t waste your time with poor mares

“In the early days I wasted a lot of time with mares that weren’t good enough. The time is wasted both commercially and literally — you’re always getting older. I tried to talk up the mares I had and make the best of them, but that best simply wasn’t good enough.

“If you really can’t afford a very good mare, buy a really good foal instead. Spending the time waiting to breed from the foal won’t be time wasted.”

2. Know what you want to breed

“However much you love a mare, there’s no point breeding from her is she doesn’t have good pedigree, type and movement, and if she isn’t bred to breed what you want. You can’t try to breed a showjumper from a dressage horse — be clear about what you’re aiming to get.”

3. Think in generations

“You have to be able to look ahead, and learn from mistakes. I turned down an awful lot of money for Farouche (pictured, below) when she won at the world young horse championships, but if I could go back I wouldn’t turn it down again. For a breeder, you have to take your first profit and use it to carry on trying to make great fillies that are a development on the mares you have. That’s how you can continue breeding.”

(Image credit: creditUnknown)

4. Focus on the foal

“If money is short, focus on breeding a fantastic foal that you can sell well, before you have to fund finding a rider and everything else that goes with it — a killer for all of us! Even if you don’t sell your foal for a huge profit, it can help you go on to breed the next one, and that’s your development.”

Continued below…

7 things you always wanted to know about breeding, but were too embarrassed to ask

5. Know your dam lines inside out

“Get to know your mare lines really, really well, so you are able to breed the sorts of horses you want. I don’t know why we so late to knowing mare lines in this country. I learnt it from thoroughbred breeding and the focus on ‘black type’ mares. If you want to sell a foal, it’s the mare that influences the price you get for a thoroughbred foal. I always knew it would be the same with warmbloods.”

For all the latest equestrian news and reports don’t miss Horse & Hound magazine, out every Thursday

Stay in touch with all the news in the run-up to and throughout the major shows and events during 2026 and beyond with a Horse & Hound subscription. Subscribe today for all you need to know ahead of these major events, plus online reports on the action as it happens from our expert team of reporters and in-depth analysis in our special commemorative magazines. Martha has bred two event horses by Cevin Z from her own horse of a lifetime, Fizz, one of which is now eventing at CCI4* with Alice Hallows.

Martha is currently enjoying producing a seven-year-old ex-racehorse, Mac, who she believes might need someone better and braver than her to do him justice in eventing. She enjoys jumping, hacking and fitness work.

Martha is also besotted with dogs – with a huge soft spot for springer spaniels – though with no competitive ambitions in this sphere whatsoever. After growing up with assorted liver and white springers, she had two rescue dogs for 14 years, one a street dog from Gambia who was abandoned at three weeks old. Now, her constant companion, whether by her feet at her desk or walking cross-country courses, is Fidget, an extremely energetic and habitually muddy black and white springer.

Martha also writes for expert advice guide PetsRadar, and was editor for Petplan Equine’s magazine Paces for seven years.
</dc:description>

The 2011 Futurity at the Scottish National Equestrian Centre (SNEC) in West Lothian produced three Elite Premiums in the eventing and show-jumping sections — two for the same local stud. Several horses from across the disciplines went home with Higher First premiums.

The evaluators for the day, Polly Lochore and Lesley Peyton-Gilbert were very impressed by the high standard of entries.

Ben Wentink of the Scotland AI Service, in nearby Winchburg, had a very successful day. His colt foal Glen Nevis Scais (pictured) took the top mark of the day with an Elite of 9.07 in the eventing section. This KWPN colt is out of Oldenburg mare Chikalita, by Concetto and is by the young KWPN showjumping stallion Ben Nevis.

Ben said: “The sire’s damline is one of the best you can find in France, having produced many approved sons and with a good percentage of thoroughbred blood.”

The top showjumper at SNEC, Gamble Scais is also bred and owned by Ben. Gamble Scais is a colt foal by Campbell VDL. He is out of KWPN dam Jigeunerin, by Nimmerdor, and also took home an Elite premium of 9.07.

Tanganyika, another colt foal, also took an Elite premium for owner and breeder Elizabeth Agnew. He scored 9 in the eventing section. Tanganyika is by current highest ranking Futurity eventing sire Grafenstolz, out of thoroughbred mare Hendersyde Limpopo, by Its Without Doubt.

Three-year-old filly, Craigmanchie Tango was awarded a Higher First premium of 8.82 in the eventing section for owner Sarah Swannie. She is by Craigmancie Gold, out of a Proud Knight mare, Craigmancie Tara.

“It’s a long drive from Orkney but worth it,” said Sarah. “This filly also scored a Higher First premium as a two year old in Aberdeen last year”.

Ben Wentink’s Lancelot sired Gancelot Scais took 8.75 in the show-jumping section. He is a colt foal, out of Darina by Cardento and top dressage scorer of the day was Liz Anne Dobson’s three-year-old filly Debonaire Way with 8.75. She is by Depardieu, out of Sunley Way by Sunley Builds.

For further information on the BEF Futurity Evaluations, visit www.britishbreeding.org
