‘Fantastic’ police horse Fimber dies due to field accident

A long-serving police horse has died following a field accident.

Fimber, a chestnut gelding who served with West Yorkshire Police’s Mounted Section, died on Thursday (15 October) at the age of 14.

He joined the force in 2004 and served for 11 years.

Superintendent Pat Casserly said that Fimber was out in the paddock at the force’s Carr Gate base when the accident happened.

He said they believe he was spooked and tried to jump out, but collided with a wooden post.

“He was seriously injured and unfortunately died on his way to the vet,” said Supt Casserly.

“Officers and staff at Carr Gate are distraught at the sudden death of Fimber. He was friendly and courageous and will be sadly missed.”

Since the force shared the news, they have been flooded with messages of support.

“We have been inundated with messages of sympathy and condolences following the news today, and would like to thank all who offered their support,” WY Police Horses tweeted on Friday (16 October).

The Wakefield Central neighbourhood police team also posted a tribute to the “brilliant equine officer” on their Facebook page.

“All officers have strong links to our horses and dogs and are treated as fellow officers,” they said.

“Without them we would struggle at certain aspects [of] our jobs.

“Central NPT would like to send our loving condolences to a fantastic officer Fimber.”

End of an era

The force’s mounted section also shared news about another of its equine members yesterday (20 October).

Police horse Louis — their last horse that was involved with policing the 2001 Bradford riots — has retired at the age of 20.

Two-year-old girl dies in fire at stables in West Yorkshire

A two-year-old girl has died in a fire at a stables in West Yorkshire.

The emergency services were called at 5.30pm on Friday (30 September) to Hessle Farm, Wragby near Wakefield.

The body of Isobel Dobson was found at the scene.

“On arrival, two barns at the farm were found to have been ablaze. A van was also caught in the fire,” said a spokesman for West Yorkshire Police.

Her 37-year-old stepfather and one-year old stepsister were taken to hospital for treatment to burns but were discharged on Saturday

“A 37-year old Wakefield man has now been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody,” said the police.

“Enquiries into the cause of the fire, which is now being treated as suspicious, are ongoing and a joint investigation is being carried out by West Yorkshire Police and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.”

No horses are thought to have been injured in blaze.

New Horsewatch scheme for West Yorkshire

A new Horsewatch scheme for the Wetherby and Harewood area of West Yorkshire will be launched on the first two days (14-15 July) of the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate.

Led by police community support officer (PCSO) Dan Siller of Wetherby police station, the scheme comes a year after a successful Farm Watch scheme was launched.

PCSO Dan Siller said: “Farm Watch has been very successful in bringing farmers together to share information and catch criminals.

“The crimes are mainly poaching, the laying of traps and the theft of small agricultural machinery.

“Now we’re going to do the same for horse owners. We will be asking people to join up, register their horses, giving descriptions of them, and then they can sign up for a text service where I can warn members of suspicious circumstances and generally feed the horse community valuable information.”
