‘Critics may call me a pony patter – but judges don’t’: breeder shows that scientific, welfare-first breeding and training can win

A veterinary researcher who wanted to prove that ponies could be bred scientifically and produced from the field by an amateur to win has done just that – and hopes to inspire others to follow in her footsteps.

Veronica Fowler started breeding Welsh section A ponies differently in 2022. Her colt Meonwara Aethelwulf King of Wessex is two, and has already won at county shows and was best yearling at Royal Windsor Horse Show, and Dr Fowler believes there is more to come.

“Aethelwulf has always been kept at grass, shown from the field and home-produced with welfare-friendly methods,” Dr Fowler said. “Critics may dismiss science and call me an amateur ‘pony patter’, but the show ring judges didn’t.”

Dr Fowler told H&H she had always had thoroughbreds but had to stop riding in 2018 for medical reasons.

“I thought ‘What else can I do?’” she said. “I bought a pony for my daughter, who happened to be a Welsh mountain, and that’s where my love for them came from.

“I was taking her lead-rein showing – not proper showing; we went to a few county shows, winging it at the bottom of the class! – and I quite enjoyed the atmosphere, and the idea of polishing up a pony, putting it in front of the judge, doing the best job you could do, and getting a judge’s opinion.

“So I thought ‘I can’t ride any longer, so let’s go and buy a couple of section A ponies and take them showing’. And that’s what I did. I didn’t do any research at all, just went and bought a couple, straight off the mountains.”

Dr Fowler said she “jumped straight in at the deep end” with her two “hill ponies”, both the semi-feral rather than the show-ring type, but she learned the ropes, and had success. And then she decided to breed her own.

“I wanted to prove that show champions can be bred, raised, trained and presented using evidence-based welfare practices, without compromising on success in the ring,” she said.

Rather than select her mare and stallion from their competition history, Dr Fowler employed “phenotypic selection”, breeding for the traits or phenotypes she wanted.

“What I’m interested in is what a good pony should be, from a health perspective, in terms of conformation and the characteristics of that pony, what the breed standard says it should look like,” she said. “Then finding two ponies who, if you marry them together, you’re likely to create that image.

“I’m not interested in whether they’ve got medal-winners in their history, or three crosses to a legendary pony, as that doesn’t get you anything but genetic problems.”

Both parents were tested for infectious disease, and the mare was scanned and vaccinated as recommended, and kept as naturally as possible while she was pregnant. Once “Wulfie” was born, he was handled daily, vaccinated and trimmed by the farrier. He self-weaned at 10 months old.

“I hate the fact people are weaning foals at four months old,” Dr Fowler said. “It’s cruel; there are tens of scientific papers telling us that’s not setting a horse up for success. There are so many myths; you have to take the foal away from the dam or she won’t dry up her milk. I wanted to prove to people that you can actually do all these other things in a scientifically, welfare-friendly way and still win. My foals are all self-weaned; they wean themselves about 10 or 11 months, when they’re mostly away with their friends. When the foal is spending most of its time away from its mother, all you need to do is to put the foal and a friend, or friends, in the next field, and they’re weaned.

Self-weaning

“The dam doesn’t call, the foal doesn’t call. They’re over the fence, in sight, in sound of each other. I filmed that a few times and posted on social media to show that foals do not need to be in isolation at four months old in a stable to be a show pony. They can be weaned in sight, in sound of their mother, in the next field, and it’s the most welfare-friendly way you can wean. There’s no stress associated with that at all.”

Wolfie was the top section A colt foal and Welsh foal reserve champion at the Bucks Counties Spectacular Show in 2023, and best yearling at Royal Windsor in 2024. He was the National Pony Society (NPS) overall in-hand M&M silver medal champion at Alresford Show 2024, but lost the prize owing to a lapsed NPS membership. So as a two-year-old, he went back to Alresford and won again.

“The judge said to me this year, ‘He’s my champion because he’s absolutely true to type’,” Dr Fowler said. “I want people, amateurs to be inspired, to know you can beat the professionals.

“Through this journey, I achieved what I set out to do: to show that champions can be bred and raised ethically, using science-based methods that prioritise welfare at every stage.

“Aethelwulf’s success is evidence that you don’t have to compromise the wellbeing of your animals to win in the ring. You just have to be willing to do things differently — and better.

“It’s time we asked harder questions about how we treat the ponies we claim to celebrate. Because true success isn’t just about silver medals – it’s about raising animals who thrive in mind, body, and spirit.”

‘Big personality, big hair and big swagger for a small pony’: farewell to charismatic Welsh stallion who leaves tremendous global legacy

A charismatic Welsh stallion who leaves a tremendous legacy with global reach has died aged 29.

Welsh mountain Pony enthusiasts have to paid tribute to Heniarth Quip, who passed away at the age of 29 at Élevage Granit in the Loire Valley, France, where he was on lease, on 20 October.

Foaled at the Heniarth Stud in Carmarthenshire, southwest Wales, on 22 May, 1996, Quip was the first progeny of the two-year-old Dukes Hill Magnum, and breeders Richard Miller and Meirion Davies’ first planned offspring of their then world record-priced Welsh section A mare Sunwillow Quest. This meant Quip line-bred to the legendary five-time Royal Welsh champion mare, Coed Coch Siaradus.

“From the moment he was born it was like he had been here before, he took everything in his stride,” said Richard. “He was a great ambassador for the breed who forged so many friendships over the years.”

Quip won the Royal Welsh Show as a yearling; the start of a successful youngstock campaign that gave him wins at the Royal of England, Royal Three Counties and Shropshire and West Midlands among others, though it was with 12-year-old India Latter-Sears he embarked on a career in ridden section A classes.

Always home-produced, he was a National Pony Society Picton final winner – a prestigious series for novice native ponies – before he moved into open ranks. He became a regular contender in the NPS/Baileys ridden mountain & moorland championships at Olympia, gaining best of breed on several occasions. He became ridden Welsh mountain pony of the year at the National Welsh Championships as well as top ridden mountain pony at the Royal Welsh in 2004.

Following his career under saddle, Quip turned his hoof to carriage driving under the guidance of Minta Winn and Nicola Blandin, again taking top Welsh mountain pony honours at the Royal Welsh Show.

But it is as a sire that he will be remembered for generations, having left approximately 180 progeny following stays at notable studs including Cosford, Cwmmeudwy, Rosmarche, Waitwith and Cwmhir as well as a spell at Voermanhof in Belguim and then “semi” retirement at Élevage Granit in France, where his last two foals should be due in 2026. His offspring have reached most parts of the globe, successful in the breeding paddock, though equally successful as performance ponies and genuine children’s friends.

Meirion said: “Big personality, big hair and big swagger for a small pony – that was Quip!”

Gifted mare lands the 2025 Price Family supreme in-hand championship at HOYS

Welsh section A Heniarth Sh-Boom proved small is sometimes mighty and landed the prestigious 2025 Price Family supreme in-hand championship at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS). The plucky nine-year-old oozed presence, and commanded attention despite being so little in the Andrews Bowen International Arena.

She was shown by Richard Miller, who bred her alongside partner Meirion Davies, handler of her foal, Heniarth Sherry Triffle.

“This is the eleventh time we’ve appeared here with a pony, and we’ve never won it before,” said Richard Miller. “Just being in the final line up is such a thrill. We are really honoured because you have the best animals in the country here of all different types of shapes and sizes, so it’s a personal preference for the judges on the day – even really good ones are down the line. So you know, we are just really proud that it was our turn today.”

Sh-Boom – by Blanche Montana – has something of a unique story. She was sold to fellow breeder Ceri Fell of the Brynseion stud as a foal and was youngstock champion for her at the Royal Welsh in as a three-year-old. Ceri was there ringside to cheer Sh-Boom on.

“When I bought her, I promised that when she had a filly, she could come back. We had our filly, so she went back,” said Ceri.

The win comes 30 years later after registering their prefix, and punctuates a vintage year. As well as her success here, Sh-Boom was crowned Welsh section A champion and then overall Welsh champion at the 2025 Royal Welsh. Joining her in the line-up were section B Heniarth Derring Do and Heniarth Yours Faithfully and their breeders are believed to be the first to breed three contestants in any one season making it a truly unforgettable show for the Carmarthenshire stud.

Among the cheers for the champion, Ian Boylan at first missed being called forwards the reserve with the winner of the exceeding 148cm final. This was Jill Whittaker’s home-bred Dakiora Royale, a three-year-old filly by Kataro.

“This is amazing. I’m just absolutely thrilled for her breeder,” said Ian.

“She came to us as a two-year-old, and we showed her briefly to be champion at the British Show Horse Association championships. And then this year, we only showed her at one show before she qualified for here at Three Counties.”

Ian went on to explain that she’s actually in foal to his homebred former Price contender Alonby Chardonnier, owned by Alison Milford, so their next hope is to deliver a safe foal.

Runner up in the pony division was John Harvey leading his own and Sue Brewis’ Elmswood Star Struck. The three-year-old Nynwoods Wild Johnny Jump Up is bred by John, too, making it all the more special.

Making the long journey from Inverness worthwhile was Hunter MacDonald, 23. Hunter showed his grandfather David Shand’s Achilty Eclipse to second in the horse division. Eclipse is a three-year-old sired by Co Pilot out of Jazz mare Doranna.

6 keys to breeding HOYS superstar ponies, according to history-making Heniarth Stud

“We didn’t have a wheelbarrow to our names,” say breeders Richard Miller and Meirion Davies of the early days of Heniarth Stud. But 30 years later, they’ve made history, with three “Heniarth” ponies qualified for the prestigious Price Family supreme in-hand championship at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS). These are section A mares Heniarth Yours Faithfully and Heniarth Sh-Boom, and section B Heniarth Derring Do.

So how did they do it? Read on for six tips from the experts…

1. Invest in a strong female line

“I’ll never forget the time my mother said, ‘Some idiot’s just paid £4,500 for a Section A mare,’ unaware that we’d purchased her,” recalls Meirion.

But this was strategic.

“We sold five animals that day and consolidated on one good mare,” clarifies Richard.

2. Take note of a young pony’s pedigree

This pair are self-confessed “pedigree anoraks” but insist this is key to breeding and should also inform decision making when buying future prospects.

“If you know how a youngster is bred, you’ll know what it will do, how it will mature and perform,” says Meirion.

But not too closely… They would encourage anyone looking for a future star or diamond in the rough to consider pedigree and conformation together.

“When I was working with thoroughbred yearlings in Kentucky, that was the frustrating thing; many were million-dollar animals, but people weren’t actually looking at them but seeing them as a commodity for the bloodlines,” says Richard. “It must be a 50/50 thing.”

3. Don’t get caught up in a prefix

While the Heniarth Stud prefix is now world-renowned, they’d caution anyone buying a new pony to take heed of the pedigree, and not be taken in by prefix alone.

“A lot of people trust in a prefix, as they would a designer handbag, because of the brand, but they won’t care what’s behind it even though that’s what will come through; blood will out,” says Richard.

4. The run of luck

“You can breed some fantastic ponies that just don’t get the break,” says Meirion. “We have just been lucky this year it all fell into place.”

He points to the fact that this season’s HOYS-qualified ponies from Heniarth Stud are with top producers, including Simon Charlesworth.

“When somebody with their capabilities has a good animal, it is given the best possible opportunity to shine; it’s put on the right stage at the right time looking great, so it has the laws of probability on its side,” he says. “It has a fighting chance, but it still has to have the run of luck.”

5. Online research

Richard and Meirion encourage aspiring breeders to make the most of online pedigree facilities.

“It is one of the most hugely important tools we have,” says Meirion. “Of course we have the stud books, but they sit on the shelf. Now you can access all the information on your phone!

“If we’d had something like that in the ’70s when we were really young and learning about pedigrees it would have been so much easier.”

6. Full dedication

“Give it all you’ve got,” is Richard’s advice for up-and-coming breeders. “You don’t have to have lots of land or money, but you have to be dedicated. We didn’t even have a wheelbarrow to our names when we started here, but 30 years down the line…”

Ultimately, successful breeding blends knowledge, patience and putting your heart and soul into the game. Lady luck may play her part, but the key to excellence lies in Heniarth Stud’s vision and dedication.

Looking to buy a Welsh section D to ride and enjoy? Read these top tips

If you’re on the hunt to buy a Welsh section D to ride and compete, this guide is for you.

What is a Welsh section D?

The Welsh section D — or the Welsh cob — is the largest of the Welsh breeds. The breed has no upper height limit but must exceed 13.2hh to ensure it is in fact a section D and not a section C. While there is no maximum height requirement, it is desirable that the section D retains pony character and true Welsh type.

The section D can be any colour, except piebald and skewbald. Grey colouring is more rare than in other types of Welsh ponies, but white markings are common.

A Welsh cob’s action should be: “Free, true and forcible. The knee should be bent and the whole foreleg should be extended straight from the shoulder and as far forward as possible in the trot. Hocks flexed under the body with straight and powerful leverage.”

General character: Strong, hardy and active, with pony character and as much substance as possible

Head: Full of quality and pony character. A coarse head and Roman nose are most objectionable

Eyes: Bold, prominent and set widely apart

Ears: Neat and well set

Neck: Lengthy and well carried. Moderately lean in the case of mares, but inclined to be cresty in the case of mature stallions

Shoulders: Strong but well laid back

Forelegs: Set square and not tied in at the elbows. Long, strong forearms. Knees well developed with an abundance of bone below them. Pasterns of proportionate slope and length. Feet well shaped. Hooves dense. When in the rough, a moderate quantity of silky feather is not objected to but coarse, wiry hair is a definite objection.

Middlepiece: Back and loins, muscular, strong and well-coupled. Deep through the heart and well ribbed up.

Hindquarters: Lengthy and strong. Ragged or drooping quarters are objectionable. Tail well set on.

Hind legs: Second thighs, strong and muscular. Hocks, large, flat and clean, with points prominent, turning neither inward nor outward. The hind legs must not be too bent and the hock not set behind a line falling from the point of the quarter to the fetlock joint. Pasterns of proportionate slope and length. Feet well shaped. Hooves dense.

The Welsh Pony and Cob Society suggests that the section D has been aptly described as “the best ride and drive animal in the world”.

“The general character is the embodiment of strength, hardiness and agility. The Welsh cob is a good hunter and a most competent performer in all competitive sports. In recent years they have had great success in the international driving world. Their abilities in all spheres are now fully recognised throughout the world.”

What can I do with a Welsh section D?

Welsh section Ds are a breed that you will find in most disciplines in the UK and across the globe. Welsh section Ds are popular showing animals, with standalone classes at major finals such as Horse of the Year Show (HOYS). They compete in the large breeds category against other native breeds, or in specific Welsh section C and D classes.

The breed is popular as they can carry most adults and taller riders, but have native pony traits meaning they are generally hardy. They can fare well in dressage owing to their movement, and the more athletic types also have a presence in working hunter classes, eventing, showjumping and out hunting. Some Welsh section Ds have also competed successfully in driving and they can also make good all-rounders and non-competitive rides. The in-hand showing scene is equally well supported, with many breeders showcasing their home-bred stock at breed shows, on the county show circuit and beyond.

Ultimately, the ideal job for each pony depends on its type, character traits and natural talent in specific areas.

Is it the right breed for me?

Aimee Devane is a leading native pony producer who has ridden many successful Welsh section Ds. Her first top pony was the gelding Pentrepiod The Judge but she has since ridden many stars, including the late Aleanto Bon A Parte and Steppers Relight My Fire, ridden champion at the Royal Welsh in 2023.

“They are my favourite breed,” Aimee confirms. “But I would not say a Welsh cob is the breed for an easy life in the sense they can be more hot-headed and generally do need stimulation and consistency to get the best out of them, especially in the early stages of training. This does not mean dangerous, but you need to have your wits about you.

“Obviously, upbringing has a lot to do with how they take to ridden work, and you do find more laid-back examples. If you find the right pony for you, though, they are amazing animals to work with and train.”

What should I look for in a Welsh section D?

“I like an old-fashioned type; I’m looking for a true pony of cob type and my preference for the show ring is for something that stands between 14hh and 14.2hh, ideally no bigger,” Aimee says. “I’m looking for a pony that has a nice length of rein as well as good bone, feather and feet. You can add topline, but you cannot add limb, feather or foot.

“I would look for something with an uphill front as this is usually an indicator of how they will eventually ride. A lot of cobs don’t have the most natural canter, so if they’re more uphill they’re likely to find that pace easier. They can be later maturers, though, and the canter can come as they get stronger. There are a few four- and five-year-olds who have a solid temperament and brain, but you will usually start to get the very best out of a Welsh section D when it is six or seven.

“Movement-wise, I like a bit of knee action that comes up and out from the shoulder. I like a pony that covers the ground; we don’t want a pony that daisy-cuts. A Welsh cob should arguably be one of the biggest movers in a ring of natives, but it’s important that we’re getting the true action without rushing or pushing the pony out of its natural rhythm.”

How much should I expect to pay?

As with any horse or pony, the price will depend on several factors including the market at the time as well as the individual animal’s temperament, age, quality, competition record and breeding.

“Welsh cobs are very valuable as they can take a taller rider,” Aimee says. “I would always find a Welsh section D easier to sell than a Welsh section C of equal quality. Plus, a Welsh section D with form in the show ring is likely to have the ability to go and succeed in another discipline, especially dressage due to their movement.

“The price I would pay for a pony depends on quality,” Aimee adds. “You can find unbroken ponies for £1,500, and ridden ponies for £8,000, but it does depend on how much potential the animal has. For the top end I would want something special that has it all; bone, feather, movement and flare. Obviously, after being backed and trained the prices increase. Top ridden ponies can go from anywhere between £10,000 and £15,000, often more.”

I’ve bought a pony, now what?

It is time to organise a pre-purchase vetting, something that is strongly recommended. It’s important to let the vet know prior to the vetting what you intend to use the pony for so they can assess it accordingly. If you tell the vet you want the pony for the show ring, they should hopefully inform you of any blemishes or conformational faults which could impact its future career, even if they don’t impact its soundness or performance.

“Due to my experience I often buy ponies without a vetting, and I also buy them unseen if sourcing from breeders or from vendors I trust,” Aimee says. “Every pony will have a job, too, even if it’s not in the show ring or in competition.”

‘The truest act of sportsmanship I’ve seen’ helps newcomer to first Royal Welsh win

An “above and beyond” act of sportsmanship from a fellow competitor helped a first-time exhibitor secure a red rosette at the 2025 Royal Welsh Show.

David Newsome said he felt “like a rabbit in the headlights” when judge Stuart Morgan pulled him in at the top of the line in the Welsh section C yearling filly class at the Royal Welsh with his own Coppathorne Glitz And Glamour.

David had only shown at five local and area shows before the Royal Welsh, and the family had only owned the flashy filly for a week, but decided they would bring her as she was entered and beautifully prepared by former producer Tommy Fuller.

“I never in a million years expected that,” said David. “I just thought I’d watch to see what a few others did first and copy them. But then when I was pulled top I couldn’t do that and I didn’t know what to do.”

But pulled second was Lowri Reed, a young lady with plenty of experience at the top.

“I asked Lowri what to do and fair play to her, she talked me through the whole thing. She told me where to stand, what to do and where to go through the whole thing. She didn’t need to do that; it’s a rare quality to help a competitor that way,” David said.

“Lowri deserves credit for my win as I couldn’t have done it without her. I’m really grateful to her.”

Wakefield-based David had his interest in the Welsh breeds piqued when he travelled to the Welsh breed sales two years ago to buy a pony for his daughter Chloe. He secured Welsh section D Dearnevalley Lady Di from the Dearne Valley stud.

“We bought her not knowing much about her so we visited Dearne Valley to see where she was bred and met Graham Schofield, her breeder,” David said. “He recommended that we contact Scott Gibbons who has produced for him over the years. I contacted Scott and it turned out that Scott lived just a mile from us. He and Kelly his wife initially provided us with a lot of help and advice.

“There are a lot of people who have advised us as our team has grown — more recently we’ve had a lot of support from friends Lee Garvey and Joe Mason who also show and breed Welsh for which we are very grateful. But Lowri’s sportsmanship went above and beyond in the class.”

Chief steward in the Welsh section Cs, Delyth Simons, agreed, adding: “I’ve been stewarding the section Cs at the Royal Welsh for over 20 years and this is the truest act of sportsmanship I have witnessed here.

“Lowri was remarkable. She helped David at every step. She was directing him around the ring and telling him what to do — where to turn and when — and even telling him when to tidy the filly’s mane and how to correct her halter. She is also a winner in my eyes.”

How to buy the perfect Welsh section B pony including what to look for and where to start your search

If you are hoping to buy a Welsh section B pony, this guide with advice from a top breeder should help you start your search for the right one

What is a Welsh section B?

The Welsh section B pony is one of the four Welsh breeds. It is the finer and arguably most athletic of the sections. The section B cannot exceed 13.2hh (137.2cm) in height but you regularly see smaller breed representatives out and about.

According to the Welsh Pony and Cob Association (WPCS): “The general description of ponies in section A of the stud book is applicable to those in section B. But more particularly the section B pony shall be described as a riding pony, with quality, riding action, adequate bone and substance, hardiness and constitution and with pony character.”

They can be described as the more refined and taller version of the section A. The B was developed by breeding mountain ponies with Hackney, Arab and thoroughbred influences.

The section B was added to the stud book in 1931 and the WPCS provides the same breed standard as the section A with the above characteristics:

Head: Small, clean-cut, well set on and tapering to the muzzle

Ears: Well placed, small and pointed, well up on the head, proportionately close

Back and loins: Muscular, strong and well coupled

Hind quarters: Lengthy and fine. Not ragged or goose-rumped. Tail well set on and carried gaily.

Hind legs: Hocks to be large, flat and clean with points prominent, to turn neither inwards nor outwards. The hind legs not to be too bent. The hock not to be set behind a line from the point of the quarter to the fetlock joint. Pasterns of proportionate slope and length. Feet well-shaped, hooves dense.

They have straighter, more low and long striding movement than the A, C and D sections arguably with a more pointed toe, though they still need to have appropriate hock action from behind.

What should I look for in a Welsh section B?

Hayley Grota runs the successful Cadlan Valley Stud alongside her parents, Howell and Yvonne Davies. Hayley’s daughter, Libby, currently competes the home-bred ponies under-saddle.

Ponies with the Cadlan Valley prefix have won at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), Royal International and Olympia.

“Conformation and breed type are the most important things to look for in a quality Welsh section B,” says Hayley. “I like a section B to possess Welsh pony characteristics, too, as well as plenty of substance and limb, two things a lot of ponies have lost over the years, which in turn has meant they’ve lost some of their hardiness.

“Today, a lot of Bs are weak in their hind legs; they move in front but they don’t move from behind. I like a pony to really use itself from the back end. Adding to this, I would never buy a section B that looks like a show pony, unless you intend it for this class; I like a pony with substance, limb and bone.”

What can I do with a Welsh section B?

Welsh section Bs are versatile and they can fare well in multiple jobs due to their athleticism and level temperaments.

Welsh section Bs have their own final at Horse of the Year Show. Sometimes they compete against Welsh section As or against other small breeds.

Many modern section Bs are also successful in plaited showing classes, standing at the top of show hunter pony and plaited working hunter pony line ups at championship level.

Smaller section Bs can make good first ridden ponies, and the breed is also a popular choice for native working hunter classes due to their natural scope and stamp.

“Welsh Bs are highly popular, both in the UK but especially in the USA,” Hayley notes.

Where should I buy a Welsh section B pony from?

There are online sale sites such as Whickr that have Welsh section B ponies advertised throughout the year.

“I advise you to do research into certain bloodlines and types that you like,” Hayley says. “Buying direct from a breeder, especially if you are looking for a youngster, is a good way of sourcing exactly what you want. Do your research and look at the back breeding of certain ponies you like that are out and about on the circuit.

“Usually, good families pass on their temperaments, which is ultimately the most important thing if you’re looking for a ridden pony. For example, if we had a stallion that didn’t have the best attitude we would not use him again.”

How much should I expect to pay?

As with all breeds and types of horses and ponies, the price you will be looking to pay for an animal will depend on your own personal budget, the competition CV of said horse or pony and the level of the sales market at the time.

“A two or three-year-old Welsh section B pony that is nice but that is not going to be a world beater could still fetch anything from between £2,500 to £3,000,” Hayley says. “If you have a youngster that is a bit more special then you’re looking at prices from £5,000 upwards, especially if the pony has done some winning in-hand.

“When it comes to older ponies with competition records they can go for anything over five figures. I have spoken to people who have sold HOYS-level Welsh section B ponies for up to £25,000. I do think breeders will sometimes sell ponies for less money, especially if they know the home is knowledgeable.”

I’ve bought a pony, now what?

It is time to organise a pre-purchase vetting, something that is strongly recommended. If the pony is for a child, perhaps asking for a trial period would be sensible, but not all sellers will agree to this.

It’s important to let the vet know prior to the vetting what you intend to use the pony for so they can assess it accordingly. If you tell the vet that you want the pony for the show ring, they should hopefully inform you of any blemishes or conformational faults which could impact its future career, even if they don’t impact its soundness or performance.

If the pony is for a child, the vet will hopefully keep an eye on the temperament during the assessment, too. Small ponies can be more susceptible to laminitis so ask the vet to consider this risk.

“We have been doing this long enough that we don’t tend to have unbroken ponies vetted as we can look at their teeth and limbs, and we have a friend who is a vet who is always willing to provide advice on certain aspects I might be worried about,” Hayley says. “I know people who have had ponies vetted and something has gone wrong later down the line, and I’ve also known ponies that fail the vet but have gone on to be great with no issues.”

The perfect teacher: tiny pony rescued from neglect finds his niche training vet students

A rescued pony who is helping train vet students while enjoying life with his herd is being celebrated this World Veterinary Day today (26 April).

The theme of the day is “animal health takes a team”, and 14-year-old Welsh section A Redwings Zeus, who has a heart murmur, is part of the team at the University of Cambridge department of veterinary medicine.

“Zeus was rehomed to the department in January last year, after they approached Redwings looking for a friendly and safe-to-handle horse with a heart murmur to join their teaching herd,” a Redwings spokesperson said. “Zeus helps students learn to detect the condition, as well as provide general equine behaviour and handling experience.”

Zeus was rescued in 2014 with a donkey called Rio. Zeus had a large and untreated sarcoid and Rio such overgrown hooves, he could hardly walk, the spokesperson said. The owner was prosecuted and banned from keeping animals, and Rio and Zeus settled into their new home at Redwings’ Caldecott centre in Norfolk.

Rachel Angell, who leads the charity’s rehoming scheme, said: “When we heard what sort of pony the team at Cambridge were looking for, we thought Zeus was just the chap for the job!

“Although a pony with his health issue would have a home for life in the sanctuary, we knew the department of veterinary medicine would be perfectly placed to manage his condition.

“We are super proud of Zeus for his unique contribution to their team, and the role he is playing to help educate vets of the future.”

The spokesperson said Zeus has been a hit in his new home, with staff and students.

Samantha Stevens, large animal skills coordinator at the department, added: “We’re delighted to celebrate Zeus and what he brings to our team this World Veterinary Day. He settled into life here well and won us over quickly with his cheeky and kind personality.

“As well as helping to teach the diagnosis of heart murmurs, he helps students learn how to perform clinical examinations, as well as trot-ups, which are used to assess any possible lameness.

“When he’s not working in his teaching role, he is a much-loved member of our herd and enjoys spending time in the paddocks alongside his new friends.”

What is a Welsh section A?

The Welsh section A or Welsh Mountain Pony is the smallest of the four Welsh breeds. It is a popular choice for both children and small adults.

The Welsh section A should not exceed 12hh (121.9cm). They can be any colour, except for piebald and skewbald. They can have a variety of white markings on their legs and face.

The Welsh Pony and Cob Society provides the following breed description:

Head: small, clean-cut, well set on and tapering to the muzzle

Ears: well placed, small and pointed, well up on the head, proportionately close

Neck: lengthy, well carried and moderately lean in the case of mares, but inclined to be cresty in the case of mature stallions

Mandy Burchell Small is a leading breeder of Welsh section A ponies. She runs the Rowfantina Stud and ponies donning her prefix have won both Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) and the Royal International.

“I like a four-square pony with a nice outlook,” Mandy explains. “A Welsh section A should have pony characteristics, with a nice big eye, a well-set front and a nice length of rein. A nice shaped head is a distinguishable feature of a Welsh pony. If you’re looking for a pony to do ridden work with then the neck set is important; the neck shouldn’t come out too low. A pony should have a good turn of front, too, which means that it should be easier to train as it finds things easier. I also like good, short, flat bone, and I would avoid a pony with appley joints. I don’t like narrow ponies either.

“If you’re buying a ridden pony the most important thing is where the saddle is going to sit. Welsh ponies are often bred to be so short coupled that there isn’t a wither for the saddle to sit behind. The saddle shouldn’t sit at the base of the neck, so a pony with a good front is essential.”

Mandy also explains that type will differ if you’re looking for a pony for a child, compared to if you’re searching for an adult’s ride.

“An open pony would be rangier and it would have bigger movement; the bigger the moment the better,” she says. “A lead rein or a first ridden should be a pretty mover, as an enormous stride could push the child out of the saddle. Whatever job you’re looking for, whether for in-hand, ridden or something else, a pony should be balanced and straight. If you’re buying a youngster, watching a pony loose in the field will show you if it has this natural balance.”

What can I do with a Welsh section A?

The Welsh section A pony is a popular child’s ride both in and out of the show ring, and the breed also fares well in working hunter ranks, on the Pony Club scene and in other disciplines.

The Welsh section A can contend many showing classes; lead rein, first ridden, junior ridden M&M and open ridden M&M. Some shows hold separate classes for Welsh section As, though sometimes they will compete against their larger relative, the Welsh section B, and sometimes they will contend mixed small breed classes.

Aside from showing, Welsh section As have faired well in driving and in Pony Club games, due to their natural athleticism, turn of speed and nimbleness.

The showing of Welsh section As in-hand is also popular.

“Whatever job, the temperament is key,” Mandy says. “But you can’t always tell this until you start working with a pony. We’ve had ponies that have been exceptionally shy and timid at the beginning, but have gone on to be great at their jobs in the end. If can be difficult to judge temperament, but with children’s ponies it’s particularly important. If you have a charming pony with a good brain it can go a very long way.”

What about a part-bred?

Welsh part-breds are popular, with many being shown in show hunter pony and working hunter pony classes. The Welsh section A can add bone, hardiness and Welsh spirit to the riding pony to produce a child’s pony that can do multiple jobs.

Where should I buy a Welsh section A pony from?

There are online horses for sale sites that have Welsh section A ponies advertised throughout the year.

“While less people are breeding, you can still find some super ponies at studs,” adds Mandy. “Social media is a great way to find contacts and breeders who have ponies for sale.”

The annual Welsh Pony and Cob Society sales take place in October. You can find a range of ponies, from foals to established ridden ponies, being sold via auction.

“The sales are a great place to go, though the prices can vary,” Mandy says. “Ponies can go for a lot of money based on something like colour, and sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason for the prices.”

Prices in the private market vary, too, as Mandy says: “There have been some very expensive ponies sold, but there are have also been some ponies sold for very little that have gone onto be HOYS animals. I think you have to base your decisions on your own personal budget and the state of the market at the time.”

‘He was a legend’: farewell to champion Welsh pony who met royals and starred on television

The owner of a Welsh pony who went to the World Championships, won national titles and excelled in para classes has paid tribute to her “legend” after his death aged 34.

Henrietta Woodward’s Arosfadeg Flying Cardi, who also featured on Blue Peter and met Prince Philip during his stellar career, had to be put down this week after a happy retirement.

“He was a very special pony,” Henrietta told H&H. “He had got to the stage where I thought he would go on for ever. He was a legend.”

“Dippy” excelled with international driver Liz Rowe, who bought him from travellers, retrained him and went on to be crowned national champion in tandem and single driving multiple times. They also went to the World Championships before the 13.3hh Welsh section C gelding was retired in 2009.

Henrietta bought him, for her daughter Octavia.

“He was a serious competition pony and the driving lot all said to me ‘He’ll never be any good for a disabled child’,” she said. “But my vet was the driving team vet, and he said ‘This is the pony Octavia needs’. And he was; he understood this was a different job and he was brilliant.”

Henrietta said their first competition was not without incident.

“We took him to a local driving competition and they asked us to do a show,” she said. “I’m an eventer by trade and I said to Octavia we’d have a canter, so we did and everyone was horrified,” she said. “Diddy said ‘Fine, let’s go’ but everyone said ‘Don’t ever do that again in a showing class!’”

Diddy and Octavia went on to great success in the para driving classes at Royal Windsor Horse Show, where he met Prince Philip. They also completed a 110-mile drive from Windsor to Wincanton in 2011 to raise money for the SMA Trust, which raises funds for research into spinal muscular atrophy.

“We started after his class at Windsor and over five days of driving and staying wherever we could, we finished with a good gallop up the straight at Wincanton racecourse and William Fox-Pitt met her.” Henrietta said. “It was lovely; he was 21 then and still super-fit.

“I retired him when he was about 25 and he was then a fantastic nanny to our youngsters, and had a lovely time,” said Henrietta, adding that she had to make the call on Monday (24 March) after Diddy had an accident in the field.

“It was awful but the kindest thing,” she said. “He looked at me and was saying ‘I want to go to sleep now’.

“He leaves a huge hole; he did so much and he was just lovely. A very special pony.”

Welsh-bred section B stallion triumphs at Horse of the Year Show in South Africa

A Welsh section B stallion born on Welsh soil, Heniarth Top of the Morning, made a spectacular return to the show ring at the South Africa Horse of the Year Show to stand overall Welsh and overall general champion in hand, repeating the success he enjoyed on his last show ring appearance in 2015.

By Lemonshill Top Note out of Eyarth Windflower, Top was exported to the Dolarch Stud in South Africa as a yearling, having won at the Welsh National Show at Malvern.

Now owned by Zadia Mostert Schutte of the Brynmore stud, the typey 12-year-old is produced by JJ Kemp and was shown initially by Scott Dixon, who flew in especially, and later by Thabo Mokoena.

“We are very privileged to have a pony of Top’s caliber at Brynmore stud,” said Zadia, who has recently welcomed Top’s very pleasing first foal.

“Top is a delightful specimen, not only in conformation, but also in temperament. We love having him around and cannot wait for his future show pony offspring in combination with the Arabians on the farm.”

Top was bred by Richard Miller and Meirion Davies and is from a family of very successful ponies; he is a full brother to past Royal Welsh champion Heniarth Wood-Wind and Australian champion Heniarth Whistle Down the Wind.

Not to be outdone, Top’s full sister Ting-a-Ling was leading Section B dam at the Royal Welsh last season, and another sister, Toodle-oo, was the dam of the 2023 champion, Heniarth Moonahmia.

“We’re delighted to see Top back out performing so far from Wales,” said Richard. “It was an honour to have him become one of the first section Bs to be exported to South Africa in recent times, but it was still a wrench to part with him as he had a tremendous character.

“However with the family’s ability to jump and perform, he’s already made a name for himself as a sire of special children’s ponies, so we can ask for no more!”

‘All the hard work was worth it’ as very poorly pony now has a bright future – thanks to you

A pony who was rescued in an emaciated and frightened state, suffering from “life-threatening” diarrhoea, has a brighter future thanks to her rescuers – and those who support them.

Welsh mare Elsa is recovering well in the care of Redwings, which took her in two months ago; a member of the public called the charity about the mare on 15 January.

“It was obvious that this little pony was very poorly,” said Redwings’ Julie Harding.

“She was emaciated, covered in lice and suffering from diarrhoea, which can be life-threatening. It was important to act quickly to get her the treatment she needed, so that she didn’t suffer any longer than was necessary.

“I left a notice for her owner to contact us and arranged to go back the next day with the relevant authorities but sadly, no one got in touch.”

Elsa was taken into Redwings’ care on veterinary advice. She was scared of people and despite her weakened condition, evaded capture.

“She had been very dull and lethargic the day before, but as soon as we tried to catch her, she wouldn’t let us anywhere near,” said Ms Harding. “It took a team from right across the charity to get her into our care safely, but of course all the effort was worth it.”

Within 24 hours, Elsa had had emergency treatment to stabilise her condition. Over the next few days, she improved enough to have dental treatment, which meant she was able to eat hay and hard feed more comfortably.

“Her poor dental health was preventing her from eating properly and a second dental was needed a few weeks after the first, but she’s now very food-orientated,” Ms Harding said.

“She’s still being closely monitored but is recovering so well that she was able to be moved to one of our woodchip paddocks on 7 March, and hopefully will be able to join one of our resident herds in time.”

Redwings has launched a “ready to rescue” appeal to raise funds for, and awareness of, its work rescuing horses like Elsa.

“It’s thanks to supporters that Redwings was able to rescue Elsa, and it is their generosity that enables the charity to be there for the next Elsa, and the next,” the spokesperson said.

‘He went on his terms’: sad farewell to Welsh section C crowned veteran champion

The owner of the much loved Welsh section C Gwenllan Birt has paid tribute to him after his death, aged 25.

Ellena Thomas’ Birt had been part of the Thomas family for 15 years. He was originally loaned by Amy Trevor to Ellena when she was just 14, then was given to her.

“I came off a Dartmoor on to him so he taught me so much and had a great career until he retired aged 16,” said Ellena. During this time, the pair qualified for Horse of the Year Show twice and he finished third in the open Welsh section C and D final at the Royal International Horse Show.

Evergreen, a 23-year-old Gwenllan Birt returned to the show ring in 2023, and ended the season crowned Senior Showing and Dressage Ltd supreme in-hand champion at the London International Horse Show.

“He was such a character right until the end,” said Ellena, adding “you wouldn’t have thought he was 25 years old.”

Gwenllan Birt died at home following a sudden and short illness.

“He’d been out in the field the day before and the strange thing is, he’d had a health check just the week before – his feet and teeth were done and his vaccinations were updated. He was feeling so well,” Ellena said.

“I’m glad he went on his own terms, and I’m pleased to know that he knew I was there.”

‘A little superstar’: heartbroken farewell to tiny pony who won it all

Tributes have been paid to a tiny superstar who won at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS), Windsor and Olympia, after his death aged 17.

Broekland Allesandro and Elsie Cowell were due to contest their last event together, the 2024 London International Horse Show, but the Welsh section A died suddenly aged 17 two weeks beforehand.

Elsie’s mother Katie Bates told H&H the family’s pony of a lifetime had suffered a short illness.

“It’s been very hard,” she said. “He was amazing; the kindest pony and 100% genuine. Elsie is devastated.”

Katie bought 11.2hh Allesandro in 2020 from Nicky and Demi Appleton to contest M&M first ridden, junior and open classes, and he and Elsie also did cradle stakes working hunters.

A former HOYS, Olympia and RIHS winner, Allesandro also stood champion at Windsor with Elsie, in her first season of affiliated showing, and competed at HOYS and London.

“We were new to showing when we bought him,” Katie said. “We’d done a few local shows but went into it completely blind and he taught us and showed us the ropes.

“It was amazing; in Elsie’s first year, he qualified for everything and won, then went on to qualify for HOYS three years running. But Windsor was the highlight.”

Katie said Elsie did everything with Allesandro, on the ground and in the saddle.

“They did dressage, cross-country – he was the nicest pony,” she said. “London was going to be their last show together as she was getting too tall for him and he died two weeks before. We’ve got an old jumping pony and her dad’s horse but he was definitely the main man. A little superstar.”

Katie’s friend Emma Lucas told H&H: “He was a pony of a lifetime for all those that got to be a part of his very special life.”

‘She’s fun, sweet and spicy’: Welsh mare bounces back to make London dreams come true

A home-producer’s pony of a lifetime is bound for London International Horse Show for the first time in the Senior Showing and Dressage Ltd (SSADL) finals. Amy Ashworth’s Belchford Mari qualified for the senior ridden championship at Rutland County on the lead-rein with eight-year-old Eliza Jones in the saddle.

Belchford Mari is a 16-year-old Welsh section A mare and Amy, who works for online retail company Lords and Labradors, has known her for most of her life. Amy has ridden for Mari’s breeder, Jennifer Stamp, for over a decade.

“One day many years ago, I was at the yard while Jennifer was away and I decided to take this little chestnut mare for a ride down the road,” Amy says.

In 2018, Mari was left empty and Amy decided to continue with her ridden education.

“She’s always been a bigger girl so I kept her in work to keep her fit and healthy,” she says. “I’d always dreamed of riding at the Great Yorkshire and as Mari was going so well and the judges were good, I decided to enter her. To our amazement, she won and qualified for Horse of the Year Show (HOYS).”

Mari took Amy to HOYS two years running before she bred two foals for her. One of her sons now resides in Australia and her first born went to HOYS in the open Welsh section A final in October with Amy.

“She’s done absolutely everything I could have ever wanted,” Amy says. “London was a show I’d never aimed at before, so I decided to recruit a young jockey for Mari to campaign the senior finals. I did try one qualifier myself with her at the beginning of the season, but Mari – who is nicknamed Gangster Granny at home – is a bit speedy, but she is a diamond on the lead-rein.”

Last year, Mari began itching and it was discovered that she had developed a severe dust allergy as well as an auto-immune problem. It was a stressful time for Amy, who says it took a while to get to the bottom of the issue: “We tried everything and as she’d never had anything like this before, we couldn’t work out what was causing it. Thankfully, the team at Rainbow Equine Hospital have been with us every step of the way and have helped get Mari better. It was a scary time; it can be hard to find out the diagnosis of a skin issue as there are so many potential factors that can cause it.

“Mari means everything to us,” Amy adds. “She’s the sweetest pony ever who is also fun, spicy and naughty at times. She’s made all my dreams come true and has now done the same for Eliza, giving her an experience of county showing and her first ride at a major final. I’m so grateful to our vets for their help; getting to London has been a huge team effort.”

‘I thought screw it!’: HOYS working hunter pony pair fight on after tack malfunction

A tack malfunction in the form of a broken stirrup at HOYS during the working hunter pony final wasn’t going to stop a rider and her Welsh stallion… until it did.

Robyn-Jayne Hadland and Garlance Flash Jac set off around the 133cm M&M working hunter pony track at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) with gusto, until Robyn’s stirrup leather unexpected snapped at the second fence.

Jac, who qualified for this year’s final at Robyn’s local show Flint and Denbigh, was not deterred, though, and the pair kept on going until the ninth fence where Robyn couldn’t quite manage to stay in the plate, just two fences from home.

“We jumped the first fence well, then over the second I looked down at my stirrup and saw it had snapped,” Robyn recalls. “I thought ‘screw it’ and carried on.

“A few years ago I actually lost my stirrup while jumping a novice course and we went clear so I thought I could do it again. I’d paid for my entry and there was a crowd full of people watching, too!”

The pair managed to jump seven fences after suffering the broken stirrup at HOYS.

“Jac had a poo, came back to trot and I just lost my balance,” Robyn continues. “He’s normally very keen to a fence so I think he was like ‘something’s wrong, Mum’. Though the whole way around he went so well; if I was going, he was going.”

Robyn and Jac had finished seventh in the open Welsh section C final the previous day.

“As we’d had such a good week, I still left the ring smiling,” Robyn says.

Robyn has owned 10-year-old Jac for four years. This was his second worker appearance here, and his first on the flat. He stood second at the Royal International in 2023.

“He hasn’t actually done a lot of jumping at all, but he loves it,” Robyn adds. “Last year [at HOYS] I’d broken my hand so couldn’t ride him here, so it was just nice to be able to get the chance this time.

“We have such a good bond and while at home’s very mischievous, but he doesn’t put a foot wrong under-saddle.”

‘We’ve been on a journey’: big-moving Welsh and 12-year-old rider are champions at HOYS

A charming Welsh section B making his first appearance at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) lifted the Westown Stud junior 2024 HOYS junior M&M ridden pony of the year title, despite only being lightly-shown.

Maisie Kerry-Oates and her mother Laura’s Cadlanvalley Royal Bronze (Ozzie), a six-year-old by Cadlanvalley VIP, were also finalists in yesterday’s first ridden final.

The gelding is in his first open season, and he’s not been an easy pony to get to this stage, as his producer Katy Marriott-Payne explained: “He’s got all the capability in the world, but he’s not been the easiest and he’s only a baby. Maisie is such a talented jockey, especially for her age, and we’ve always wanted it to all come together for her on the day. We’ve all been on quite a journey to get here; we’ve come miles and miles. Though they are both just heavenly to watch.”

Maisie was emotional after her triumph. Prior to this win, she’d never even stood in the final line-up at HOYS.

“I just tried to have confidence in him today,” she said. “I guided him around and reassured him where I could. He’s got his little quirks, but he’s very friendly and I could not ask for a better pony.”

Katy has ridden numerous Cadlanvalley ponies to the top, and Ozzie has similar qualities: “He’s obviously a lot smaller but he has so much showmanship and his movement is similarly effortless.”

Lilly Richardson and her mother Lucy’s home-produced Welsh section A Marsh Walk On By flicked his toes into reserve spot in the 2024 HOYS junior M&M ridden pony championship. The gelding has enjoyed a stellar week, winning the open ridden Welsh section A final yesterday and he also jumped around the 122cm working hunter pony track.

Jessica Stalling judged ride alongside Gregory Gerry:

“I wanted to take him home in a suitcase,” said Australian judge Jessica, when commenting on their champion. “He sat up and travelled across the ground nicely. He was a pleasure to watch and did a nice show. What a great jockey she was too.”

Completing the championship set was Daisy-May Ovens and Melliver Willy Wonka and Maesyfelin Tara and Amber Danter, the top two from the large breeds final.

‘Her dream is to jump in the main arena’: budding mini showjumper wins HOYS with ever-green Welsh

A 19-year-old Welsh section A provided his seven-year-old rider with her dream Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) win as they jumped to the head of the 2024 HOYS junior M&M working hunter pony of the year field.

Laura Long was on the edge of her seat while watching her daughter Mia-Bella Long jump here for the first time on Julie Millard’s ever-green gelding Vennebos Pearly King (Sparty).

A year ago, Mia finished second at HOYS on the lead-rein and now the budding young jump jockey has her sights set on show jumping here in future years.

Back in 2022, Sparty won the inaugural junior working hunter pony of the year final with his previous jockey Lola Carabine.

“We got Sparty at the start of 2022 as Lola was happy for him to come to us to teach Mia the ropes,” said Laura. “When we first got him Mia was so novice and she had to work hard on perfecting her show. She does show jumping as well, so the jumping has come more naturally than the flat part.”

Prior to his working hunter career, Sparty was a prolific flat pony. He only began jumping in his teen years. He’s currently home-produced.

“He’s the best pony in the world and he gives his rider everything. If they’re committed he’s going, no matter what. He looks incredible, too. He’s never looked so well in himself. He’s like a fine wine; he gets better and better each year.”

“Jumping is Mia’s favourite thing to do and she’s so level headed,” Laura added. “She’s so calm and brave; I’m so proud of her. Her dream is to jump in the main arena at HOYS one day.”

Last year’s HOYS M&M working hunter pony of the year Delami Bravado took Poppy Rowlands into second spot in the HOYS 2024 junior M&M working hunter pony of the year championship, with Guy Hamilton and Rhesfair The Done in third.

‘He’s a bit famous’ – rescue pony steps in to help young rider take national title

A rescued pony stepped in at the last minute to help a young rider to a dream win in the national para endurance championship.

Alfie-Jay Errington won the 23km Endurance GB Emerald Championship with Redwings Milky Way, a 20-year-old Welsh pony who has been taking part in endurance rides for over a decade with his rehomers Niamh and Sarah Richardson.

“Niamh Richardson, 16, and her mum Sarah were attending the Lion’s Tail Endurance Ride in Leicestershire on 24 September when they heard that Alfie-Jay was sadly unable to take part in Endurance GB’s para endurance national championships because his pony was lame,” a spokesperson for Redwings said.

“Not wanting Alfie to miss his shot at the championship, Niamh offered Alfie the ride on Redwings Milky Way.”

Sarah rode alongside Alfie-Jay and Milky Way, who were victorious.

Alfie-Jay’s mother Sophie Errington said: “Alfie has learning difficulties that make life a little hard to handle for him at times, but he has found his sport in endurance as everyone is so kind and understanding. All he had talked about for a month was the para championships, and we are so grateful for the kindness of Niamh and Sarah, and Redwings Milky Way, who is such a beautiful and understanding pony, for the fact he was still able to take part. For them to win was just a bonus.”

Milky Way was one of a large group of ponies rescued by Redwings from common land in Wales in 2004.

“Due to problems with indiscriminate breeding, overpopulation, disease and malnutrition, the ponies faced a challenging future on the commons,” the spokesperson said, adding that Redwings and others rescued all the ponies in need.

Sarah Richardson said Milky Way is very experienced, so she and Niamh knew he would look after Alfie-Jay.

“Lots of riders passing us were calling out to Milky Way, and Alfie asked me why,” she said.

“I explained that he’s a bit famous after his long and successful endurance career and Alfie loved that! Alfie regularly competes in Superman or Batman colours, and it was Superman that day – which felt especially apt as Redwings Milky Way saved the day!”

The Richardsons also rehomed Redwings Heron, a 30-year-old pony who has been part of the family since 2010.

Supporters’ delight as tiny colt’s birth captured live on webcam

The birth of a tiny foal to a rescued mare was “perfectly captured on webcam”, to the delight of viewers.

Welsh mare Nia gave birth to a chestnut colt on 29 August, on a sunny evening in a field covered by the Mare and Foal Sanctuary’s webcam. The mare had been rescued with a foal at foot late last year, and this summer it was confirmed that she was pregnant again.

“Nia delivered him in a quiet pasture at the Newton Abbot sanctuary late last week, without the need for human intervention,” a spokesperson for the charity said.

“Supporters were delighted to see the birth perfectly captured on webcam after following the story of pregnant Nia throughout the summer. The film shows Nia walking to the centre of the field on a sunny evening, lying down and giving birth minutes after. Nia’s field companion, grey Dartmoor mare Chandrani, is seen watching from a distance.

“The tiny chestnut foal soon wobbled to his feet and after a little practice at standing up began exploring his surroundings the next day and enjoying some late-summer sunshine.”

The spokesperson said the charity, which has years of experience of mares and foals, monitors pregnant mares continually. Nia initially “appeared to be finding difficulty in allowing the foal to suckle” at first but vets are checking both to make sure the colt’s development is normal.

Nia’s handler Kayleigh Bull said the birth came much sooner than anticipated.

“It is very exciting, but anyone who works with newborn foals will always be concerned they’re latching well and are as healthy as can be,” she said. “Nia seems to be doing well and I hope the little foal will become strong and healthy. It’s definitely a real team effort, and we couldn’t wait to share the news and pictures with our supporters.”

Nia and her filly Netty were among a herd of 69 semi-feral Welsh ponies taken from Merthyr Common in a joint operation last year.

The charity’s director of fundraising and communication Dawn Vincent said: “We wouldn’t be able to rescue ponies like Nia and care for her beautiful new foal if we didn’t have such fantastic supporters who so kindly donate whatever they can afford. The cost of caring for horses and ponies has spiralled in recent years and we appreciate every penny pledged to us.

“The little foal is chestnut with a white flash down his face, just like his older sister Netty, who our supporters helped us to name just before Christmas. We’ve all fallen in love with him already. He, Netty and Nia have sanctuary for life with us and in coming years we will carefully assess their needs to see where they might live a happy and fulfilled life.

“For now, the foal will continue to explore his new environment. He’ll have gentle, regular handling from staff at the sanctuary, who will allow him to live as naturally as possible with Nia during the early stage of his life. If all goes well, we will be hoping for help from the public to name him, so please keep watching our social media platforms and website for updates.”

Royal International joy for 20-year-old rider and stallion who was her surprise Christmas present

Six contenders vied for the 2024 RIHS UKPH/Anthony Evans Insurance young riders M&M supreme championship at the Agria Royal International Horse Show (RIHS) but only one could return home victorious.

On this occasion, it was the big-moving and ultra-typey Welsh section D stallion Thorneyside Royal Command (Rocky) and Kaitlyn Fairhurst who were pulled into the top spot before the cheering crowd.

Judges Angela Calvert (ride) and Caroline Hamilton (conformation) had assessed all three young rider classes throughout the morning ahead of the championship.

“He was the stand out winner in our class,” said Angela, of their section champion. “He went beautifully, he had type and was an out and out showman with presence.”

When commenting on the quality of the classes, Caroline added: “Our winners were our winners, but the quality went down the line. They weren’t easy classes to judge and we had to really nit-pick.”

The Thorneyside The Saracen 10-year-old was providing 20-year-old Kaitlyn with her first-ever RIHS triumph, though she did make it into the International Arena last year on a second with her 153cm show hunter pony.

Kaitlyn became acquainted with Rocky when he was owned by Lynn and Emma Scott. She took the ride on him during his second open season, qualifying him for Horse of the Year Show (HOYS). She then had him on lease for a period of time, before her parents bought him for her as a surprise Christmas present.

During his career, Rocky has stood in-hand Welsh cob champion at Royal Windsor on three occasions. He has also covered mares and has stock on the ground.

“He’s a gentleman to deal with on the floor, though he can be opinionated when you’re on him,” Kaitlyn said. “Winning here was very overwhelming. It was so nerve wracking when I was pulled in top in the class. I didn’t have any expectations in the championship, though Rocky had other ideas when he galloped up that grandstand — he wanted to win it.”
