The King and Queen will attend the Betfred Derby at Epsom Downs next weekend (6 June) to watch the 247th running of the British Classic.

Epsom’s general manager Jim Allen said the racecourse is “honoured and thrilled” that the King and Queen will be there on Derby day.

“Their Majesties show great enthusiasm, interest and support for horseracing in the UK and their attendance next week will be a proud moment for all of the team here and everyone connected with the racecourse,” he said.

“Derby day provides joy and entertainment to millions of people around the world as one of Britain’s most famous and iconic events, and royal attendance has been synonymous with the meeting for generations. We are delighted that Their Majesties will be continuing this tradition next week.”

The King and Queen are both honorary members of The Jockey Club, which owns Epsom Downs racecourse, and became the organisation’s joint patrons in May 2024.

Their visit continues a tradition of royal attendance. The late Queen only missed two editions of the famous race from the start of her reign until the Covid pandemic, in 1956 when on a state visit to Sweden, and in 1984 when attending the 40th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Her late Majesty was also patron of The Jockey Club for 68 years, from 1954 until her death in September 2022.

A horse bred by The late Queen with almost £130,000 in winnings claimed the Tattersalls Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) open in-hand championship on the opening morning of the 2026 Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Chris Hunnable led Reach For The Moon (Moon) to victory in a hotly contested class for former National Hunt horses en route to the championship.

The seven-year-old is now owned by Queen Camilla, and Chris said to win with him at Royal Windsor was extra special.

“It’s very sad that she [The late Queen] is not here to see it but I’m sure she’s up there watching him,” he said.

“The build-up for Windsor for us is quite a lot of pressure; we obviously don’t want to let the royal family down. We’re very proud and want to do as best as we can, so a win in our first class is brilliant.”

Moon, trained by John Gosden and Jeremy Snowden, ran 43 times over the flat and hurdles and won nine times.

His last race was in July 2025 at Uttoxeter, and he went to Chris and Katie Jerram-Hunnable the next month.

“He’s taken to the show ring really well,” Chris said. “Katie’s been riding him under saddle in some hack classes and RoR classes and he’s picked up a few wins and seconds.”

Away from the ring, Chris said Moon is an “adorable character”.

“He’s a yard favourite; he’s just such a lovely horse. The day before yesterday, he was nuzzling the cat who jumped up on to his windowsill. He’s a lovely person.

“He grew a bit today with the atmosphere – I think it was the white railings and green grass as most of our prep shows have been in arenas or on sand. But he got better and better as the class went on.”

Reserve in the championship went to Charlene Smith’s Golden Horn eight-year-old Star Caliber, handled by Barry Smith, winners of the Tattersalls RoR open in-hand class for flat horses.

The Queen said she “hopes Badminton Horse Trials goes on for ever” as she visited today (8 May) in her role as patron of Ebony Horse Club.

Ebony is Mars Badminton’s charity of the year; riders from the stables based in Brixton, London, put on a display for Her Majesty in the main arena today.

The Queen first became aware of Ebony, which enables young riders from disadvantaged backgrounds to be with horses and potentially train for careers, some years ago at a meeting in Brixton when the club did not have premises.

“I was so moved and humbled by the whole thing, I felt now was the time to get it going with a riding school,” she said. “I can hardly believe now that there it is. I remember it as a patch of ground with nothing on it, and now all these ponies, these wonderful riders doing a fantastic job.

“Huge thanks to all the volunteers who come in and help because it wouldn’t happen otherwise, and it’s given all these children the most fantastic chance to get on in life. I’m so thrilled to be a patron.”

Linda Mars representing MARS, Badminton’s title sponsor, presented a year’s supply of horse feed to Ebony.

The club’s chief executive Sid Holdsworth said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our brilliantly talented young people, who were so excited to ride for The Queen. Thanks to our fantastic group of volunteers, the team at Badminton and The Queen, we have all had a fantastic day.”

Theo Dorton, one of the four riders who performed the demo, said all of them were “beyond thrilled”.

“To have taken part in this, something so big, I never thought I would be part of,” he said.

“Thank you to Ebony for having me and giving me the opportunity to perform at Badminton. It has been amazing and I just can’t wait to do more.”

The Queen, who arrived at Badminton Horse Trials just as defending champions Ros Canter and Lordships Graffalo were performing the test that took them into the lead, said she has been going to the event for years.

“Always on my feet, but I never cease to be impressed by all the wonderful riders here,” she said. “It’s such fun, and I just hope it can go on for ever.”

The Queen will attend Mars Badminton Horse Trials on Friday (8 May) in her role as patron of the Ebony Horse Club, the event’s chosen charity this year.

The Ebony Horse Club, founded in 1996, is a community stables in Brixton, London, which aims to use horses to transform the lives of young people from disadvantaged communities. The charity offers training and career opportunities and cultivates life skills in its beneficiaries, giving them the responsibility of caring for an animal.

The charity’s stand at Badminton is at number 253 Beaufort Way, and the cross-country fence carrying its name, a double of gates on one stride called the Ebony Horse Club Gates, is number 5ab on the five-star cross-country course.

The day The Queen is visiting Badminton Horse Trials, Friday, is the second day of dressage.

As favourites and defending champions Ros Canter and Lordships Graffalo are currently set to be the 38th pair to start from a field of 65, pending final withdrawals (see the full list of remaining Badminton entries), it’s likely Ros will be one of the first into the dressage arena on this day – so The Queen will have to arrive promptly if she wants to catch what may well be the best dressage test of the day.

Following the withdrawal of second favourites Oliver Townend and Cooley Rosalent yesterday, data analytics experts EquiRatings give Ros and “Walter” a 38% win chance; Bubby Upton and her stalwart Cola are now second in the prediction centre with an 11% win chance.

The achievements of Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic riders in Paris have been celebrated at a ceremony hosted by The Queen.

Yesterday evening (22 January) riders, owners, grooms, support staff, and British Equestrian (BEF) representatives attended a reception at Clarence House, London.

The Queen met the eventing team’s Ros Canter and travelling reserve Yas Ingham, dressage travelling reserve Andrew Gould and para dressage riders Natasha Baker, Mari Durward-Akhurt, Sophie Wells and Georgia Wilson. BEF chief executive Jim Eyre, performance director Helen Nicholls, dressage performance manager Caroline Griffith and para dressage performance manager Georgina Sharples were also in attendance.

The Queen spent time talking to owners and grooms, “acknowledging the vital roles they played in the teams’ successes”.

Mr Eyre thanked The Queen for her hospitality, “enduring support for the equestrian community” and continued patronage of the federation.

“He also took the opportunity to thank the athletes for their hard work and determination during their performances at the Games. He paid tribute to the owners, who are the backbone of our sport, and the grooms who dedicate their lives to the wellbeing of their equine charges,” said a BEF spokesperson.

“He ended by recognising the ‘team behind the team’ – the support staff, the performance managers and the practitioners, who all work tirelessly to ensure the athletes and horses can perform to their best on the world stage.”

The Queen was presented with a commemorative book of photographs, which captured “key moments and the team spirit” from Paris.

“I’m so proud to be your patron and what you achieved in Paris made us all feel very proud to be British,” said The Queen.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t be there, but I was watching every bit of it on television and it really did bring tears to the eyes. Thank you to the whole team for everything you do.”

Britain’s Olympic equestrian medallists have received royal congratulations from The Queen following their success at Paris 2024.

Her Majesty, who is patron of British Equestrian, said in a post on Instagram that she “along with our entire country – could not be prouder of every member of Team GB” for their “tremendous tally of medals at the Paris 2024 Games”.

In the post shared on The Royal Family’s Instagram account, and signed “Camilla R”, she added: “I am full of admiration for your skill, passion and determination and I send my warmest congratulations to you all.”

Britain’s horses and riders have enjoyed an exceptional Olympics, winning team medals in all three disciplines for the first time since the home Games of London 2012.

As well as excelling in the team competitions – with gold medals in eventing and showjumping, plus dressage bronze – all nine riders also qualified for the individual finals, with seven finishing in the top 10.

Lottie Fry (Glamourdale) and Laura Collett (London 52) headed the individual British performances, taking home respective individual bronze medals in dressage and eventing respectively.

The Princess Royal, who competed at the 1976 Olympics and is president of the British Olympic Association, presented the eventing team medals on 29 July.

The Olympic equestrian events concluded with the individual showjumping final yesterday (6 August). The venue now be used for the Olympic modern pentathlon from 8 August, and next month’s Paralympic Games.

The Queen will attend the Mars Badminton Horse Trials (8-12 May) this week.

Her Majesty will watch the final showjumping phase on Sunday, 12 May and then present the prizes for the winners.

The Queen at Badminton Horse Trials: royal history

Badminton celebrates its 75th anniversary this year and the event has long had ties with royalty, with members of the royal family frequently spectating there.

Both the Princess Royal and her daughter Zara Tindall have been placed at Badminton. Zara will ride at the event this year on Gleadhill House Stud’s 15-year-old chestnut Class Affair. Zara’s father Mark Phillips, then the Princess Royal’s husband, won Badminton in 1974 on Queen Elizabeth II’s Columbus.

Queen Elizabeth ll presented the Badminton trophy at the event’s 50th anniversary running, in 1999. The winner on that occasion was five-time British Olympian Ian Stark.

This week’s event has been given an extra edge by Oliver Townend’s victory at Kentucky Three-Day Event last month as he is now in the running to claim the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing, a big-money bonus given to any rider who can win Kentucky, Badminton and Burghley Horse Trials consecutively. Having taken the Burghley title last year, Oliver will win the Grand Slam if he triumphs at Badminton this week.

A hero was made at Royal Ascot today (22 June) in the form of the William Haggas-trained Desert Hero, who was bred by The late Queen, when he won the King George V Stakes under Tom Marquand for owners The King and Queen.

The three-year-old chestnut colt is bred in the purple by Sea The Stars, out of Dubai mare Desert Breeze, and he got his nose in front on the line under a great ride by Tom, having been sent off at odds of 18/1.

“This is genuinely one of the proudest moments of my life in the saddle so far,” said an emotional Tom. “I grew up watching horses win for Her late Majesty The Queen and to ride one for His Majesty the King is unbelievable. I’m in a dream world.

“Royal Ascot is the pinnacle and riding a royal winner at the royal meeting is so special.”

Desert Hero battled it out up the home straight in the latter stages of the 1m3f race alongside Valiant King, under Oisin Murphy for trainer Joseph O’Brien and owner Qatar Racing Limited, and eventually won by a head.

“I wasn’t always confident we were going to get there and win but this fella was supremely game and the Haggas team get it right time and time again,” said Tom.

Zara Tindall, The King’s niece, said: “It’s bittersweet – just think how proud and excited our grandmother The Queen would have been. But for Charles and Camilla to have a winner keeps the dream alive.

“What a race – it was incredible. Fulfilling the dream is amazing and the horses are at the centre of it – we love them.”

William Haggas said that to win for The King and Queen was “a great honour”.

“I thought Desert Hero and Tom were going to be more forward, but the other runners went a bit fast and ultimately he stayed on really well – it was the horse’s first time running over a mile and a half,” he said.

“The King and Queen have been looking forward to Royal Ascot for a long time and they are delighted. It’s important for horse racing and it’s important that they enjoy it.”

The royal racehorses will run in joint ownership of The King and The Queen Consort, Weatherbys has confirmed.

Following The late Queen’s death in 2022, ownership of her racehorses passed to The King.

His first runner as monarch was the William Haggas-trained Educator, who finished second at Salisbury on 29 September, and his first winner bearing the royal silks the then four-year-old Just Fine, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, at Leicester on 4 October.

It is now confirmed that the Queen Consort, who is known for her love of racing, will join The King in ownership of the royal racehorses.

They have horses with a number of trainers, including John and Thady Gosden, Sir Michael Stoute, Nicky Henderson, Ralph Beckett, William Haggas and Richard Hughes.

They have three horses – all bred by The Queen – among the 83 currently remaining in contention for a starting place in the 2023 Derby at Epsom.

These are Circle Of Fire, by Almanzor out of Galileo daughter Fiery Sunset, in training with Sir Michael Stoute. They also have Sea The Stars son Desert Hero, out of Desert Breeze (by Dubawi), who is trained by William Haggas. Completing the trio is the John and Thady Gosden-trained Slipofthepen, who is by Night Of Thunder and out of Danehill Dancer mare Free Verse.

While the Nicky Henderson-trained Steal A March was not among yesterday’s (10 March) confirmations for the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle, there will be a royal connection at Cheltenham next week.

The Queen’s retired racehorse Barbers Shop, now 21 years old, will be taking part in the Retraining of Racehorses parade on the opening day of the Festival (14 March), ridden by Katie Jerram Hunnable.

The Queen Consort is also expected to continue to have some horses in partnership with Sir Chips Keswick.

The Duchess of Cornwall has shared how her love of horses and passion for reading inspired the choice of her favourite childhood book, Black Beauty.

The Duchess was speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme over Christmas, to guest editor Lord Dobbs, about her love of books and the importance of reading, particularly in childhood.

“It came through my father who was a fervent bibliophile and he lived surrounded by books,” said the duchess, speaking on the 27 December show.

“[When we were] very small children, he used to come and plonk himself on the end of our beds and read to us every night. We were always in a great state of excitement as to what he was going to read and how long we could keep him reading for, as we didn’t particularly want to go to sleep. I think that’s where it all started. It was something that was embedded in me from a very early age, to my dotage.”

She added that Black Beauty was one of her favourites, although the memory of Ginger still makes her cry when she thinks of her, even now.

“In those days I was a sort of pony-mad child and I thought of very little else apart from horses and ponies and charging about on them,” she added. “So I think Black Beauty was the first book that stuck in my mind.”

She cited The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Children of the New Forest and A Tale of Two Cities as among her other favourites.

In January 2021, the duchess launched a virtual “reading room” on Instagram, to celebrate literature in all its forms. She also works with literary charities and spoke of both the importance in increasing literacy and the joy, comfort and escapism reading brings.

“If you learn to read, however difficult your life is at the time you can pick up a book and you can escape,” she said “You can laugh, you can cry. It just takes you out of the real world and it gives you a different dimension to life. It’s such an important thing.”
