Remembering Monty Roberts – when he started The late Queen’s horses at the Royal Mews in Windsor

Following the news that outstanding horseman Monty Roberts has passed away, aged 91, we dip into the archives to revisit one of his appearances in Horse & Hound. We travel back to May 1989, when Monty demonstrated his methods at the Royal Mews at Windsor Castle with one of The late Queen’s horses. H&H editor Michael Clayton finds Monty “quietly impressive”.

Monty Roberts’ “advance and retreat” method uses the horse’s natural curiosity and its need for support and friendship when suddenly left alone in a training pen. He prefers a pen at home with solid sides to aid the horse’s concentration, but succeeded in this country with a lattice work frame with an audience all round at ground level, although this clearly distracted some horses a little.

I attended the Royal Mews at Windsor Castle on a stormy, blustery morning. The Queen had made the magnificent indoor riding school available and she attended this demonstration, having provided several young horses of her own for “starting”. They had just been brought up from grass at Hampton Court paddocks.

Monty says he aims to compress three weeks of “conventional methods” into 30 minutes. An audience including some distinguished and very knowledgeable horsemen waits for it to happen.

My diary of his first demonstration was as follows:

11.38am. Marmaduke, a 16.2hh hunter or eventer type, three years old in June, starts his training. The horse, which has a skewbald head and white body, has a distinctly worried, suspicious look in his eye and patrols the pen nervously, wearing only a webbing headcollar.

Monty Roberts “advances” on the horse: shoos him away and then flaps some webbing long reins to encourage the horse to lunge loose round the pen.

The horse then stands quietly, perhaps a little tired. Monty puts a hand on its head, strokes its muzzle, and speaks quietly to it. He takes care always not to look it in the eye. He sniffs a little at its nostrils.

Shades of the late Mrs Woodhouse, I thought! But Monty explains later that breathing into the nose does not work with all horses and it is only a minor method of being friendly. It is not a system in itself.

Then Monty walks quietly away from the horse.

The horse tentatively follows him. Monty stops. The horse stops. Monty quietly moves away – and the horse follows him.

Amazingly, the horse is soon following Monty round the pen, without being led.

The horse stands quietly without being held while Monty gently pats its back, its girth area and its flanks. He talks soothingly, and picks up all four feet in turn, patting each hoof reassuringly.

“He now thinks I'm his friend, but I'm now going to put a little strain on the relationship,” says Monty.

11.48am. Sean McCarthy comes into the pen and places a saddle, long reins and bridle on a square of canvas. McCarthy leaves. The horse looks most alarmed. It walks up to the tack, puts its head down and blows nervously and loudly.

“It will be interesting to see if he flees, or comes back to me, his new friend,” Monty comments.

The horse goes back to Monty, who pats him “to get back what we had”.

Then, incredibly, the horse stands quietly while Monty puts a numnah on its back. He is impressively deft, quiet and sure in all his movements. If the horse flinches he reassures it with his voice and his soothing touch.

He places a saddle, with stirrup irons at full length, on the horse's back. Then he quietly reaches under its belly and fastens the webbing girth.

The horse suddenly explodes. The stirrups flop against its side. It bucks half a dozen times. Then it stands quietly.

“It is my absolute obligation not to let my pulse rate go up one tick” Monty explains calmly.

Again he pats the horse’s muzzle and talks to him. Then, with great economy of movement, he slips a bridle on the horse, carefully inserting a rubber-covered snaffle bit without fuss. It goes over the webbing headcollar.

“He’s stopped worrying about the saddle. He’s busy thinking about the bridle now,” Monty comments.

He leads the horse a few paces. Then he fastens a strap under the girth to secure each stirrup iron. He loops a long rein through the stirrup iron on each side and fastens it to the ring of the snaffle bit.

11.58am. Making shooing noises, and clicking his tongue, Monty encourages the horse to move ahead on the long reins. Then he flaps the reins on the horse’s flanks and encourages it to walk, trot and canter on long reins round the pen. He quietly halts the horse and carefully makes it rein back one step.

12 noon. Sean McCarthy comes into the pen, wearing a skull cap. Monty Roberts holds the horse by the head and keeps talking to it.

Without hesitation McCarthy pats the horse on the shoulder, and then swings into the saddle. He sits securely while the horse gives three or four small plunges. Monty continues to talk soothingly to it and pats its muzzle.

“He wants to hear your voice too,” Monty says to Sean.

Sean speaks encouragingly and clicks at the horse.

Monty leads the horse a few paces. Then he unclips the lead rein from the headcollar. He uses the headcollar, not the reins, to lead the horse, and explains later that he is always very careful not in any way to hurt nor harm the horse’s mouth.

Sean quietly exerts some leg pressure, and soon has the horse walking, trotting and then cantering round the pen. He keeps his hands high and wide apart. He halts the horse and changes direction.

12.08pm. Sean dismounts. He and Monty make much of the horse, patting it approvingly, and telling it that it has “done a great job, pal”.

They take off the tack and the horse stands quietly by Monty.

We clap and the horse starts and makes off. Then it returns to Monty.

Normal schooling

“You see, he comes back to his friend. That’s a very good thing,” says Monty with warm satisfaction.

The horse is taken from the ring. We are assured that it will have two more such sessions on Wednesday and Thursday and will be ridden in the open, accompanied by mature horses on Friday. Thereafter its riding groundwork and schooling can continue normally.

Monty tells me he dislikes lungeing on a lunge rein; he thinks it can injure the horse and is not good for its movement. He prefers a limited amount of long reining, and quiet riding at all paces, with the accent on careful and sympathetic handling of the horse’s mouth.

He likes to use a loose school and jumping lane for horses being schooled over poles with a jumping career in mind.

Next Monty “starts” a much more difficult case, a two-year-old chesnut filly with four white stockings, belonging to the Queen. The filly is destined to be a polo pony, perhaps to be ridden by the Prince of Wales.

The filly rolls its eyes nervously and is very mistrustful. Monty admits that fillies can be much more difficult: “they can be crabby and their attention span is much shorter”. This one looks an exceedingly difficult case.

Monty is even more sympathetic and sensitive in his handling. He starts at 12.24pm and goes through the same phases described previously. He is concerned because the filly constantly declines to move away. She tends to freeze, standing with a humped back in a corner. At one stage he scuffs sand from the pen surface with his foot, and flicks it at her to make her retreat. She moves away, quite affronted. Then she comes back all the more readily for assurance.

Amazingly, in six minutes she is following him round the ring and allowing a “hands on” friendship to develop. Sometimes she licks her lips.

“That’s a good sign,” says Monty. “She likes me in spite of her fears.”

At 12.38 he has the numnah and saddle on. He keeps the lead rein clipped on to the headcollar this time, in order to give the filly added reassurance, but he does not get into a tug of war situation. If she moves away he hardly pulls on the rein and lets her move readily. She always comes back.

At 12.54 the filly is long reining but will not move on easily, and needs gentle encouragement to get into a trot. Yet two minutes later Sean swings into the saddle, and quietly rides her round the ring at a walk and a trot, but hardly at a canter.

“That’s enough” says Monty; barely three minutes later, at 12.59, only 35 minutes after the filly started her training, it is all over. She is a baby and will clearly need a lot more careful handling and schooling, but she has made a giant stride forward in her training, and one that could have taken weeks by conventional methods.

“If we press her any more today, she’ll go bad. That’s all we’ll ask,” says the relaxed and smiling Monty.

He says he can do this sort of thing with mules, sheep, deer and even fish. We believe him.

‘The brightest spark I’ve ever trained’: Hickstead championship for horse bred by The late Queen, owned by The King

Katie Jerram Hunnable and The King’s “phenomenal” First Receiver added another title to their incredible tally: the 2026 Hickstead Derby Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) champion sash.

“He was absolutely on song,” said Katie. “He didn’t put a foot out of place the whole time he was in the ring – there wasn’t a moment that he wasn’t on form.”

This is the second time that Katie has lifted this title.

“I won for the first time on Barbers Shop for Her late Majesty The Queen, bred by the late Queen Mother, which was very, very special,” Katie said, “And then today I won on First Receiver, bred by The late Queen and this time owned by The King.

“He was reserve champion last year and he went that one bit better this year, which was my dream.”

Now nine years old, “Firsty” and Katie have amassed an enviable tally, topped off by the 2026 Hickstead Derby RoR champion title.

“He’s amazing. He’s done the grand slam. He’s won at Horse of the Year Show, won the novices and opens and stood champion at Aintree and now he’s won here. He’s also been Royal Windsor champion twice under saddle, and three times in hand.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what he can achieve as a riding horse, but would love for him to go supreme at Aintree as a former racehorse. It’s one more box I’d love to tick with him.”

Katie went on to explain that Firsty needs careful production on account of his intelligence.

“He’s the most intelligent horse I have ever had. All thoroughbreds are intelligent, but he’s super-intelligent and comes from a very intelligent family. You have to make sure you don’t do anything wrong as he won’t forgive you. He’s the brightest spark I’ve ever trained.”

Giving his owner-rider a special early birthday present was Tori Thomas’ Wonga Swinger, Tattersalls RoR amateur ridden show series champion here for the third time.

The multi-garlanded duo are also former HOYS winners and reigning RoR ridden champions at Royal Windsor. They have also stepped successfully into the riding horse ranks, having won the amateur riding horses at the Royal International Horse Show last term, and recently booked a return pass to HOYS in the large riding horse division at Royal Three Counties show.

‘I’m sure she’s up there watching’: horse bred by The late Queen and owned by Queen Camilla wins at Windsor

A horse bred by The late Queen with almost £130,000 in winnings claimed the Tattersalls Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) open in-hand championship on the opening morning of the 2026 Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Chris Hunnable led Reach For The Moon (Moon) to victory in a hotly contested class for former National Hunt horses en route to the championship.

The seven-year-old is now owned by Queen Camilla, and Chris said to win with him at Royal Windsor was extra special.

“It’s very sad that she [The late Queen] is not here to see it but I’m sure she’s up there watching him,” he said.

“The build-up for Windsor for us is quite a lot of pressure; we obviously don’t want to let the royal family down. We’re very proud and want to do as best as we can, so a win in our first class is brilliant.”

Moon, trained by John Gosden and Jeremy Snowden, ran 43 times over the flat and hurdles and won nine times.

His last race was in July 2025 at Uttoxeter, and he went to Chris and Katie Jerram-Hunnable the next month.

“He’s taken to the show ring really well,” Chris said. “Katie’s been riding him under saddle in some hack classes and RoR classes and he’s picked up a few wins and seconds.”

Away from the ring, Chris said Moon is an “adorable character”.

“He’s a yard favourite; he’s just such a lovely horse. The day before yesterday, he was nuzzling the cat who jumped up on to his windowsill. He’s a lovely person.

“He grew a bit today with the atmosphere – I think it was the white railings and green grass as most of our prep shows have been in arenas or on sand. But he got better and better as the class went on.”

Reserve in the championship went to Charlene Smith’s Golden Horn eight-year-old Star Caliber, handled by Barry Smith, winners of the Tattersalls RoR open in-hand class for flat horses.

‘It seemed fitting’: rocking horse of The late Queen’s beloved Emma created to mark her centenary

The craftspeople who made six rocking horses for The late Queen said it was only fitting to immortalise Her Majesty’s beloved pony Emma to mark what would have been her 100th birthday.

Twins Marc and Tony Stevensons’ Stevenson Brothers created the replica of the Fell mare, who touched hearts worldwide as she stood by the Long Walk at Windsor Castle during her owner’s last journey, with the blessing of her son The King.

The horse was introduced to Terry Pendry, The Queen’s stud groom and manager, and the real Emma at Windsor Castle last week.

“She was sniffing it all over, really nuzzling it, it was quite lovely,” Marc Stevenson told H&H. “Terry said the rocking horse looked a little in foal, which Emma was when Terry bought her, all those years ago. A bit of me wondered whether she thought this was her foal, so we’re slimming her down a tad.”

Stevenson Brothers had made rocking horses for The late Queen’s 80th and 90th birthdays, and her jubilees, so “we had to make one for her 100th”, Marc said.

“It’s been something we wanted to do for a long time,” he explained. “I’d photographed Emma before but it was the funeral that did it. It was lovely Terry Pendry had taken Emma to stand by the Long Walk to pay her last respects, a very poignant moment, and I thought ‘We have to do this’.”

Marc mentioned the idea to make Emma to The King’s former crown equerry Toby Brown, when Stevensons presented His Majesty with his own rocking horse to mark his coronation.

“Through conversations with Toby Brown, word was requested to make a replica of Emma, in memory of Her Majesty, and to support the Fell Pony Society,” he said. “So Toby went to His Majesty and said that’s what we would like to do, and the message came back that it was a good idea, and thank you very much. The idea’s been in gestation for nearly four years but it seemed very fitting to kick on and make it happen for the centenary.

“We’ve got a very talented team here, of craftspeople, carvers, artists, restorers and talented saddler and business partner Sue Russell, who runs it all.”

Stevensons will be making a limited number of rocking Emmas, taking on board small tweaks suggested by Mr Pendry, and for each one sold, the company will make a donation to the Fell Pony Society. The King is the patron of the society, as was The late Queen.

“Terry’s very constructive; he judges horses and ponies, and knows Emma intimately so I wanted to check that he was happy we’d got her shape right, and he was very pleased with her,” Marc said. “We stood back and looked at the rocking horse and at Emma, and he said ‘Yes’, we’d got the shape right. We’d got her feather nice and straight on her lower limbs, just as the breeders in Cumbria like it to be, and head and shape just right.

“We’re going to make her in oak, to get the grain coming through and a bit more texture, and she won’t be glossy, she’ll be semi-matte. We do our own silk scarves too – I’m looking at a picture of Her Majesty wearing a Stevenson Brothers scarf – and they will come with her, scarf and photograph. And it’s nice to support the society; our rare breeds need looking after and it’s an honour to support them.”

It’s 100 years since Queen Elizabeth II was born; here’s how horses featured in every decade of her life

On 21 April 2026, it would have been the late Queen’s 100th birthday. From toy horses in the nursery to her first Shetland pony, Peggy, Queen Elizabeth II’s passion for equestrianism began almost as soon as she could walk.

Throughout her 70-year-reign, it was duty first, family second and horses a very close third. There is almost no equestrian sphere that did not enthral Her Majesty. As a consequence, her impact was felt far and wide, from Epsom to Badminton, from Cleveland Bays to Fells, from breeding her own private hacks to a European eventing champion to multiple Group One winners.

Driven by her encyclopaedic knowledge of many aspects of the horse world, The Queen was never a stickler for tradition when it came to progress. Whether it was her fascination with Monty Roberts’ join-up practices or latching onto the superiority of organised sport horse breeding on the Continent, she was always ahead of her time.

“If someone invents something new with a horse, you name it, The Queen will try it,” said Lieutenant Colonel Sir John Miller, then Crown Equerry.

She was an equestrian icon and a beacon for the horse world. But she was also the matriarch of a family that shared her passion and perpetuated it for those less fortunate, including dozens of equine charities.

As the late Dorian Williams, the 20th century’s voice of showjumping, summed up: “It is the particular good fortune of us in the horse world that it is those sports associated with horses that gives Her Majesty the most pleasure. We are the lucky ones.”

And so, in celebration of what would have been the late Queen’s 100th birthday, we celebrate a snapshot of her life in horses.

A handwritten letter written by The Late Queen as a child, featuring her drawings of horses and riders, has come to light having spent years in a suitcase under a bed.

The note from the then Princess Elizabeth, aged about 10, to the head housemaid at the Royal Lodge, Windsor, is expected to make £4,000 when it goes up for auction on 27 February.

It was sent from Cornwall to Beatrice Stillman, who died in 1991 aged 80:

“Dear Beatrice,

“I am sending you some primroses we picked, wild. There are some pale pink ones as well as the yellow. It is very lovely here. We can go down on to the beach from the garden.

“I hope the birds are well, and the gold-fish haven’t died. Will you please give Cootie (Miss Coote I mean) and Mrs Wade some of the primroses to share. Jock is very well and happy here. Nanny and Joanna send their love to you. Love from Elizabeth.”

The letter, one of many to Ms Stillman found two years ago, will go under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers’ sale room in Penshurst, Kent.

Justin Matthews of Hansons said: “When I first saw the letter, it gave me goosebumps. Queen Elizabeth II, as we remember her – with her love of dogs and horses – is astoundingly evident in this letter penned by her younger self.

“From these few lines we understand everything we later know about The late Queen. She is seen to be observant, kind and concerned with others’ wellbeing, just as she was in later years.”

The collection of letters also includes a note written by Princess Margaret.

William Westacott, who owns the correspondence, is the nephew of Rene Dicker, Ms Stillman’s niece.

“Auntie Rene, now 95, fondly remembers being presented to George VI and The Queen and the princesses Elizabeth and Margaret,” he said. “She also recalls playing in the large playhouse in the Royal Lodge garden that was gifted to Princess Elizabeth in 1932. It being wartime, the Queen kindly donated some of the princesses’ clothes to the children.”

When Ms Stillman died the suitcase of letters, including Christmas cards, went to William’s mother Jean Westacott, Beatrice’s niece, and when Mrs Westacott died, two years ago, her son found the suitcase under her bed.

“We knew the letters existed, but to read them in the flesh was a ‘wow’ moment,” Mr Westacott said.

The late Queen’s letter from an “idyllic childhood holiday”

Mr Matthews added that the exact date of the letter is unknown but Ms Stillman became head housemaid at Royal Lodge in 1936 and the princesses moved to Windsor Castle in May 1940, so it was written between those dates.

“The letter speaks of an idyllic childhood holiday before the war when we know Cornwall was a popular destination for affluent and aristocratic families,” he said.

“In those days, it was very common for children to correspond with household staff they were fond of – especially those who helped take care of their home life, like head housemaids who looked after their laundry and toys.

“In his book Elizabeth, Gyles Brandreth refers to two of the princess’s ponies known as Jock and Hans. Jock is referenced in the letter as ‘very happy here and doing well’.

“We are already seeing a great deal of interest in this incredible letter which, as well as revealing the innermost concerns of the future queen, is an important and charming historic document.”

Rare life-size bronze of The late Queen and her beloved Burmese expected to sell for six figures at auction

A life-size sculpture of The late Queen aboard her beloved Burmese is being auctioned this week, and is expected to sell for a six-figure sum.

BUDDS auction house is selling the bronze sculpture, which has an estimate of £200,000. It is one of only two in the world and features in a timed auction that ends on Sunday (21 December).

The sculpture is by equine artist Caroline Wallace. The original stands at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and was created to commemorate The late Queen’s platinum jubilee in 2022. The copy piece is now for sale.

“We are honoured to have been entrusted with this sale,” said Graham Budd of the auction house.

“It represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire the only other life-sized bronze of Queen Elizabeth II on her beloved charger Burmese – a companion piece to Sandhurst’s iconic original.”

Burmese was given to Her late Majesty in 1969 by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The late Queen rode her in Trooping the Colour for 18 years, from 1969 to 1986, after which the mare retired to Windsor.

She spent four years in retirement and died in 1990 aged 28. She is buried in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

A touching moment as horses given to The late Queen retire together with fitting ceremony

Two horses given to The late Queen by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have retired together with fitting ceremony to their last, happy home.

George and Elizabeth, from the Royal Mews and the Metropolitan Police respectively, were both officially stood down from service at The Horse Trust’s Horses, hounds and heroes event. The 25-year-old gelding and 17-year-old mare will stay with the charity for life.

“Though they came from the same place, their paths diverged,” a Horse Trust spokesperson said. “George went on to become a trusted royal charger and Elizabeth, initially destined for the same role, instead embarked on a distinguished career with the police.

“In a touching moment, their saddles were removed for the final time – signifying not only the close of their active service but also the beginning of their well-earned retirement in the heart of the Chiltern Hills.”

The Mounties gave George, a cross between a Hanoverian and a thoroughbred, to The late Queen in 2009, to mark 40 years since the gift of Burmese, who Her Majesty rode in Trooping the Colour until 1986.

“George followed in her footsteps as a ceremonial charger and went on to feature in many of the nation’s most significant occasions,” the spokesperson said, adding that George was The King’s charger while he was the Prince of Wales, took part in Trooping the Colour every year and also had a central role in the platinum jubilee celebrations, Her late Majesty’s funeral and The King’s coronation.

“Like Burmese before him – the famous Canadian mare who carried the Queen for 18 consecutive Trooping the Colour parades and famously stood firm during an assassination attempt – George exemplified steadiness and dignity in the face of pageantry and pressure,” the spokesperson said.

“Described by the Royal Mews as a ‘true gentleman… always reliable and bombproof’, George not only took part in countless royal events but also helped train young chargers with his calm, dependable nature. So admired is George that he has even been immortalised – as a rocking horse.”

Elizabeth, also known as ER and Lizzie, is a 17-year-old Hanoverian who was given to The late Queen in 2012 to celebrate the diamond jubilee.

“Originally intended to become a royal charger, Elizabeth’s path instead led to the Metropolitan Police, where her role was primarily operational rather than ceremonial,” the spokesperson said. “Known affectionately as Lizzie, she took part in all aspects of policing, bringing her intelligence, affection, and trademark mischief to every duty. On occasion, she did ride in historic ceremonies, including her moving presence as part of The Queen’s state funeral, as well as at the coronation of King Charles.

“Elizabeth’s distinguished career reflects both her versatility and the significant role she played in policing and ceremonial life. Now retired at The Horse Trust, her charm and spirit continue to shine as she begins this well-deserved next chapter.”

George and Lizzie join the herd of retired horses at the charity, which promised they will enjoy days of peace “surrounded by the same care and respect they gave in service”.

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said: “We are incredibly honoured to welcome George and Lizzie to their forever home. Their years of hard work and service are testament to their strength, spirit and unwavering reliability. Their presence here is a reminder of the vital role horses continue to play in national life.”

Royal Family salutes much-loved ‘gentle giant’ reunited with his father and sister for happy retirement

The Royal Family has paid tribute to a much-loved Windsor grey, who has been reunited with his father and sister after 15 years of service to his country.

The Royal Mews’ 19-year-old gelding Tyrone has retired to the Horse Trust, where he was welcomed with a neigh from his sister Meg, who was waiting for him in a field with their sire Storm.

“The three former state carriage horses, all Windsor greys, touched noses over the fence in a joyful reunion, now set to spend the rest of their days grazing together in the peace of the Chiltern Hills,” a Horse Trust spokesperson said.

“After 15 years of loyal service at the heart of Britain’s most historic royal occasions, we are honoured to welcome him to his new home and to reunite him with his family.”

Tyrone made his royal debut in 2012, when he took The late Queen to the state opening of parliament. Since then, the spokesperson said, he had been a “constant and dependable presence at almost every major royal occasion”.

“His final public duty last month, carrying The King and Queen during the state visit of President Macron, was a brilliant end to an exemplary lifetime of public service,” she added.

Tyrone, who was known for his kind nature, was a wheeler, one of the horses positioned closest to the state carriage. The 17.2hh gelding was often paired with his sister, including for The King’s coronation in 2023 and trooping the colour last year.

“After 14 years of noble service with the Royal Mews, we are celebrating Tyrone and wishing him a happy retirement!” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.

Royal Mews crown equerry Colonel Toby Browne said The late Queen took a great interest in the horses, and loved the family connection between Storm, Tyrone and Meg.

“He is a very popular chap, a big fan favourite,” he said. “Everyone loves Tyrone. He is totally dependable, very hard-working and really deserves his retirement.”

A member of staff who worked closely with Tyrone added that he is a very loyal, stoic horse.

“There is not a bad bone in his body,” he said. “He is just the gentlest giant. He will be hugely missed because he is so reliable and so kind-natured. Over his 15-year career, he has helped so many members of staff learn and we have paired him with young horses to teach them the ropes.”

The Horse Trust spokesperson said Tyrone is happily enjoying his grass, and that he and his father are now “the best of friends”.

“In an emotional moment, Tyrone stepped off the horse lorry and was greeted by the welcoming whicker of his sister Meg, who was waiting alongside their father Storm in the paddock,” she said.

“Although he is at retirement age, the skip in his step would fool anyone into thinking he was still in his prime. Watching him trot out to pasture with his family, with a couple of bucks and of course a good old signature grey horse roll, on this bright summer day was a joyful moment for everyone at the sanctuary.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen added: “After all his years of public service, bringing joy and pride to the country, it is time for us to serve him and give him the best possible life here, where our horses are treated like royalty.”

Statue of The late Queen on horseback among plans for national memorial

A statue of The late Queen on horseback overlooking the Mall features among the design concept for the new national memorial in the heart of London.

Architect firm Foster + Partners won the competition to design the memorial for The late Queen, which includes sculptures, a Prince Philip Gate, gardens and a bridge inspired by her wedding tiara.

The concept is subject to change as it undergoes refining, and a sculptor is set to be selected by the company and the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee and announced later this year. But early graphics show plans for a large statue of Her Majesty on a horse in St James’s Park, as well as one of her walking arm in arm with Prince Philip.

Norman Foster, founder and executive chairman of Foster + Partners, said “it is an honour and a privilege for our team to be awarded this project”.

“Her Majesty loved history and tradition, so this is reflected in the inspiration of the original design of St James’s Park by Sir John Nash. Some of his principles have survived, whilst others have been lost and will be restored, creating a family of gardens joined by gently meandering paths,” said Mr Foster.

“I knew The Queen on formal occasions but also enjoyed her informality when attending events as a member of the Order of Merit. We have sought to reflect these qualities of the formal and informal in our design, with an appeal across a wide range of ages and interests. To these ends, we have discreetly stretched the boundaries of art and technology with a deliberately gentle intervention.

“Our design will have the minimum impact on the nature and biodiversity of the park and it will be phased to ensure that the precious route across it will never be closed.

“At the heart of our masterplan is a translucent bridge symbolic of Her Majesty as a unifying force, bringing together nations, countries, the Commonwealth, charities and the armed forces.”

The winning team includes artist Yinka Shonibare and landscape designer Michel Desvigne.

Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee chairman Robin Janvrin said: “Foster + Partners’ ambitious and thoughtful masterplan will allow us and future generations to appreciate Queen Elizabeth’s life of service as she balanced continuity and change with strong values, common sense and optimism throughout her long reign.”

Committee member Valerie Amos added that the design “brings to life” The late Queen’s “many contributions to the lives of people across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth”.

“Their ambitious design will create a beautiful space for people to come together, reflect on her legacy and share stories for generations to come,” said Baroness Amos.

The final design will be announced in April 2026, alongside a legacy programme.

Farewell to breeder who produced ponies including The late Queen’s Emma

Olwen Briant, the passionate producer of mountain and moorland (M&M) ponies – including the late Queen’s Carltonlima Emma – and founder of Picton Stud, died on 4 May aged 81, following a long illness.

Born in Hartlepool in 1944, Olwen developed a love of horses as a child from riding in Langley Park, Buckinghamshire.

She showed and bred some show ponies, but always had a Dartmoor or a Welsh section B as a “fun pony”. From here her passion for M&Ms grew; she loved their hardiness and versatility.

Olwen bought Lunesdale Lucky Lady, and in 1992 she became the first Fell Olympia ridden M&M champion. Another notable pony was Highland stallion Snowydene, who took the same title in 2000. Both ponies featured in Olwen’s small breeding operation, Picton Stud, named after her family connections to Picton Castle in Wales.

In 1999, following success at Royal Windsor, Olwen was approached about producing ponies for the late Queen. This became a long-standing and successful relationship, also with Olwen’s daughter Lizzie, and included ponies such as Carltonlima Emma, who qualified for the Cuddy final at Horse of the Year Show in 2006. Olwen loved watching the ponies in the ring and had a great eye for youngsters.

Olwen was a great supporter of the National Pony Society (NPS) and a past president. In 1990, she helped create the NPS novice M&M final, believing there was a need for a prestigious championship for M&Ms, like there was for show ponies. She continued to sponsor this final, known fondly across the industry as “the Picton” and now in its 35th year, and Lizzie will continue to do so.

Olwen’s other passion was dogs, having brought dogs back from China, where she campaigned against the meat trade. She enjoyed holidays to Barbados and took much pleasure in watching her grandson Freddie in the show ring.

Lizzie described her mother as “feisty but a lot of fun and very kind”.

“She was a handful, but we had a lot of fun,” she said.

Lizzie and Freddie will carry on the Picton Stud and will be standing one of the King’s Fell’s stallions, bred by the late Queen.

Olwen is survived by Lizzie, son-in-law Tim and Freddie. Her funeral takes place at 12pm on 9 June at North Wiltshire Crematorium, followed by a celebration of her life at Bassett Down Complex.

New trophy created with shoe belonging to The late Queen’s much-loved pony Emma

A new trophy featuring a shoe belonging to Fell mare Carltonlima Emma, the beloved pony ridden by the late Queen Elizabeth, was presented at British Champions Day (19 October).

North Yorkshire cabinet maker Sam Hewitt crafted the Emma trophy for the Worshipful Company of Farriers (WCF) best shod horse of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot racecourse. The trophy includes one of Emma’s shoes that has been “left as worn, but lacquered” – with a base turned from a piece of Yorkshire wood.

Emma, who was a successful show pony, was The late Queen’s companion for the last 13 years of her life. She touched the hearts of the nation when she was pictured standing on the Long Walk at Windsor Castle, with Her Majesty’s headscarf folded over the saddle, as the funeral cortege arrived.

On British Champions Day the WCF and Princess Anne presented the Emma trophy to Jason Gajczak, farrier to Ice Max, trained by Karl Burke and owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum.

“To win the WCF best shod horse on Champions Day at Ascot is amazing and to receive the Emma trophy for the first time has topped off a truly amazing season for me,” said Jason.

“I’m very lucky to shoe some of the best horses in the country for one of the best Flat trainers in which he puts his trust in me. I am only a small part of a big team.”

WCF liveryman Trevor Clarke, who came up with the idea with Major General Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter, said he was “deeply grateful” to Ascot for allowing the company to hold the best shod competition for the first time at a Flat race meeting.

“The judge, Robin May AWCF, was highly complimentary about the outstanding standard of shoeing. The Emma trophy serves as a wonderful tribute to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her enduring commitment to the welfare of the horse, which lies at the very heart of the WCF’s mission and history,” he said.

An 18.2hh grey Shire who served at The late Queen’s funeral has retired from duty aged 18.

Heathfield Forrester retired to the Horse Trust after 12 years’ service to the Royal Parks charity. The organisation cares for and provides free access to the eight Royal Parks of London and historic green spaces, with a team of 10 Shires who are stabled at Richmond Park.

“Heath” worked as a carriage-driving horse, alongside Shire gelding Nobby. At The late Queen’s funeral the pair collected the thousands of floral tributes left by the public.

Heath and Nobby were also involved in a number of public occasions including the Platinum Jubilee, Shire Horse Sunday, and the blessing of the plough at Wellington Barracks. In addition Heath carried out conservation work in London’s green spaces, and provided carriage rides.

“During his time in the Royal Parks, Heath stole many hearts not only due to his eye-catching appearance but because of his brave and kind personality too,” said a Horse Trust spokesman.

“He was described by his former colleagues as a real gentleman who taught all the youngsters the ropes.”

The spokesman added that Heath had “many claims to fame” including featuring on the Channel Five television series Behind the Scenes at Hampton Court Palace, and two appearances on BBC’s Countryfile.

“Heath is no doubt our best horse and it will be a sad day to see him go,” said a Royal Parks spokesman. “We had hoped to have him for a further few years, but I’m sure he will be much loved at the Horse Trust.”

The Horse Trust team is “honoured to welcome Heath after many years of noble service”.

“He brought joy to the days and lives of many, worked hard towards a greener London for everyone, and bravely served our country at countless state occasions,” said the charity’s spokesman.

“It is time to remove Heath’s harness and grant him a very long and well-deserved retirement among our green pastures, in the Chilterns, Buckinghamshire. Heath is currently enjoying getting to know fellow retiree Yachtsman, who recently joined us from the Metropolitan mounted branch. Our equine care team are all absolutely smitten with Heath.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeantte Allen added that Heath is a “truly stunning horse who has undertaken such valuable work during his service”.

“It is a testament to the Royal Parks that they use heavy horses for traditional land maintenance work rather than always turning to machinery,” she said.

“The more this type of initiative can be taken up the better and may also help save some of these breeds whose numbers have got alarmingly low in recent years. We are thrilled to have this gentle giant join us and wish him the happiest possible retirement. He and Yachtsman are already inseparable.”

Two early Royal Windsor championships for The King’s top show horse

The ex-racehorse First Receiver provided The King with a double championship victory on day one of the 2024 Royal Windsor Horse Show as he was crowned 2024 Tattersalls RoR open in-hand champion, as well as Tattersalls thoroughbred ridden show horse series champion.

The seven-year-old gelding began his Windsor campaign when handled to perfection by Chris Hunnable, who produces the horse for the show ring alongside his wife, H&H columnist Katie Jerram-Hunnable, who took the reins less than two hours later to score the victory in ridden ranks.

Katie rode First Receiver to glory in the Racehorse to Riding Horse championship at the Horse of the Year Show in 2021, his first appearance at the prestigious final in his debut season. He was previously owned by his breeder, The Queen, and he qualified for HOYS in 2021 at Burghley Horse Trials, becoming her Majesty’s final show ring winner before she died.

First Receiver is by New Approach and during his time in racing he was trained by Sir Michael Stoute. He has only been very lightly shown and he was last seen at Royal Windsor under-saddle in 2022 when he was just a novice.

“I’ve never galloped him like that before, but I knew I had to go for it,” commented Katie, as she left the ridden championship. “He was just awesome today. I had a really bad ride on him here last year; he was very worried and nervous about everything, so we’ve given him a year out for both him and I to mentally process everything. I came here today with a lot of anticipation and I hope this proves to people that even if you have a wobble, never give up on your ambitions; it was my dream to win this on him, and he’s only gone and done a double-whammy.”

Reserve in the 2024 Tattersalls RoR open in-hand championship was Star Caliber, handled by his owner Barry Smith, who had finished second in the flat section behind First Receiver. This Golden Horn six-year-old ran 19 times during his career, winning once in 2020 at Goodwood.

Joining the flat horses in the 2024 Tattersalls RoR open in-hand championship were the top two exhibits from the national hunt division, Kelly Morgan’s Top Wood, a Kotky Bleu 17-year-old handled by Jasean Spraggett, and Sophie Staveley’s Burnieboozle, a nine-year-old by Frozen Power.

‘Gallop pain-free, sweet girl’: farewell to grey Shire who led The Queen’s funeral procession

A grey Shire police horse who led The late Queen’s funeral procession has been put down after a short but happy retirement.

The former Thames Valley Police (TVP) horse, who led Her late Majesty’s cortege on the Long Walk at Windsor Castle in September 2022, was aged 13. The 18hh mare retired to The Horse Trust after the funeral, her last deployment, owing to soundness issues.

“Although Aurora had only been with us a short while, she instantly found favour with our team and amongst our supporters who met her on the yard when visiting,” a Horse Trust spokesman said.

“Aurora served TVP valiantly throughout her career and attended all mounted deployments including football matches, demonstrations, royal escorts, neighbourhood policing patrols, school visits and music concerts. She also participated in mutual aid events, attending football matches in both Leicester and Brighton.”

The spokesman said that although she enjoyed her work and was an “exemplary” police horse, her ongoing lameness issues led to her retirement.

“Fitting straight into our herd of retirees, Aurora made many friends both equine and human due to her placid nature,” the spokesman said. “Her gentle character and striking size and beauty made hers a popular stable door for our visitors to linger at, as Aurora almost always had her head out and was ready for the strokes and adoration she so deserved in her retirement.

“A grey Shire horse standing at 18hh, Aurora could be spotted in the field easily like a glorious marble statue, both stoic and stunning.”

The spokesman said Aurora’s issues worsened, and although she was closely monitored by the charity’s vet, she then sustained a ruptured ligament.

“Due to her other diagnoses and sheer size, this severely limited her prognosis and any treatment options available would have severely impacted her quality of life,” he said.

“Therefore, it was decided to let Aurora be at peace and run pain-free across the rainbow bridge. While her time with us was shorter than some, she certainly made a massive impression on the team and our supporters. We are grateful to have been able to give her time to enjoy the fresh air, roll in plenty of mud and run freely with other horses during her time here at The Horse Trust. Rest in peace, sweet Aurora.”

A TVP spokesman added: “Aurora had such a sweet nature, she was another big gentle giant of ours who generally looked after the newer riders but always did a good job of keeping us on our toes.

“We cannot thank The Horse Trust enough for the wonderful retirement she got to enjoy and how well she was treated. Gallop pain-free sweet girl and thank you for your service.”

Thank you, Lord Firebrand: ‘true gentleman’ Army horse who led Queen’s funeral procession bows out

The horse who led the funeral procession of Her late Majesty is to start a new life, having formally retired at the London International Horse Show.

Lord Firebrand, the charger of King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery commanding officer John Baileff, and a “good soul; a true gentleman” bowed out after the Kings Troop musical drive, which had been thrilling audiences throughout the show, on Sunday (17 December).

“‘Yogi’ has done 10 years of service,” Major Baileff told H&H. “We think about 50 Royal Salutes, and more musical drives than any of us, and he’s done something I don’t think another horse will ever do; leading the funeral procession for Her Late Majesty.

“To be able to retire him on such a stage as this, during the drive, which he absolutely loves, is something really special.”

Major Baileff first met Yogi when he arrived with the troop as an adjutant, and had to learn to ride.

“He was one of the horses I learned on,” he said. “He was taught to be a charger by some excellent officers, and they helped me bond with him. I was lucky enough to return as commanding officer and find him still here, and having him as my charger is a lovely sentiment.”

Major Baileff said it had been special not only to ride Yogi, but also to watch him perform from his commanding position on the ground.

“He’s a really good soul,” he added. “A true gentleman, the most calm-natured… but I think his biggest strength is his bravery. He loves performing but you genuinely get a sense from him, whether in the stable or on parade, that he wants to look the part and he just wants you to be ok.”

As with all military working animals, Major Baileff explained, the decision to retire is made by the Army veterinary corps, working with the regiment, and they go through the rehoming process.

“He’ll go to a civilian home, and no doubt have a wonderful life as a military horse veteran; it’s the same for all our horses,” he said. “I think we’re both a bit sad really. I’ll miss him desperately, but I just want to say thank you. He’s just the best.”

The late Queen’s stud manager receives H&H Lifetime Achievement Award

It would be hard to find a more decent and honourable person – nor a more natural horseman – than Terry Pendry, who is the deserving recipient of the 2023 Horse & Hound Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mr Pendry LVO, BEM, stud groom and manager to The late Queen at Windsor Castle, touched hearts across the world last year when he and Her Majesty’s mare Emma stood by the Long Walk to say their last goodbyes.

Mr Pendry had served The Queen for almost half a century, 20 years in the Household Cavalry, then another 28 directly. He was made a military knight in honour of his service this year, another accolade in his distinguished career.

“It was such a great pleasure to be able to honour Terry Pendry’s lifetime’s work, his commitment to horses and to excellence in horsemanship, and his loyalty to Queen Elizabeth II until her death last year,” said H&H editor-in-chief Sarah Jenkins.

“Nobody will forget the sight of The late Queen’s favourite hack, Emma, standing on the Long Walk as her rider’s coffin made its way past to Windsor, the mare held by Terry who had ridden at their side for so many years.

“But though we know Terry best for his role with Her Majesty’s show horses, his career with horses goes back a very long way, from his early days in racing and through his military service. You couldn’t meet a more decent and honourable human nor a more natural horseman, and we are thrilled he has now joined Horse & Hound’s Lifetime achievement hall of fame, adding this to his many other well deserved accolades.”

Mr Pendry’s 2023 Horse & Hound Lifetime Achievement Award was announced last night, along with the 13 other winners of this year’s Horse & Hound Awards in partnership with NAF, at a star-studded ceremony at Dallas Burston Polo Club.

The late Queen’s ponies to move from Balmoral to England

The late Queen’s Highland pony breeding programme is to be moved from Balmoral Castle to England, it has been confirmed.

A spokesman for Balmoral said the stud would return to Hampton Court Palace near London rather than continuing at the Scottish castle in which Her Majesty spent her last days.

The ponies moved to Balmoral in 2007, to work on the 64,000-acre estate as well as for the breeding programme. The Queen was very much involved with the ponies; she would visit the stud every time she was at the castle, and was interested in their success in the show ring.

“Historically the royal Highland pony breeding programme has been based at Hampton Court Palace,” the Balmoral spokesman said.

“In 2007 a small programme was opened on the Balmoral Estate. Breeding will now be consolidated back to Hampton Court Palace; during this period of transition the Royal Household is in consultation with staff who will be affected by the change.”

It is not known how many jobs will be affected. The stud has been managed since 2007 by Sylvia Ormiston, whose husband is the farm manager.

It is thought there are about 40 ponies at the stud, and the castle is also home to Highland cattle and Cheviot sheep.

The Balmoral spokesman said: “We are in a process of consultation and cannot comment further at the present time.”

The former National Pony Society (NPS) Olympia mountain and moorland (M&M) supreme champion Snowydene has died aged 30.

Olwen Briant’s Highland stallion Snowydene, who was known at home as Snowy, lifted the prestigious title on his debut at the London final with Lizzie Finlayson-Briant in 2000.

Snowy was bred by Scott McGregor and he was bought by the Briants as a four-year-old.

“We met Scott when we were at Olympia showing our Fell mare, Lunesdale Lucky Lady,” explained Lizzie. “We were admiring his stallion, Falcon Frost Of Sauchrie, and said if he were to ever have a son by him then we’d like to know about it. Luckily for us, when Snowy became available Scott got in touch with us.”

Snowy debuted in the show ring as a six-year-old and he was successful on several occasions, winning multiple novice classes. He qualified for Olympia on his first attempt the following year. At the final in December he was crowned best of breed before scooping the supreme title.

“He was always a bouncy ride and I can remember the ride judge at Olympia [Jackie Beatham] saying that he looked so fresh and happy for how late it was in the season,” recalled Lizzie. “He was pretty gobsmacked by the atmosphere, but he went amazingly well and he did a great show.”

Snowy, a winner of the Glyn Greenwood in-hand supreme at the Ponies (UK) championships in 2004, was also a consistent breeding stallion. He is the sire of former Royal Highland breed supreme Heather of Conway.

“He also covered some of The late Queen’s mares,” Lizzie said. “For a Highland pony he was always forward and off the leg. In his later years he was a bit of a pet and while we once got offered a lot of money for him, we were never tempted to sell him.

“His temperament was second to none; you could cover a mare with him one day and take him to a show the next. He would wander around the yard with my young son, too and we could completely trust him. He also had a love of jam donuts and he had one every birthday right up until the end of his days.

“We are all devastated by his passing, but we feel lucky that he was fit and well right up until he was 30 years old. He never had a sick or sorry day in his life.”

The late Queen’s pony Emma takes centre stage – and eats grass – in new celebrity role

The late Queen’s last and much-loved Fell pony Carltonlima Emma took up a celebrity role at Guards Polo Club on Sunday (10 September).

The 27-year-old mare, who was seen standing by the Long Walk at Windsor Castle a year ago as Her Majesty’s funeral cortege made its final journey, led the teams out for the final of the Major General’s Cup.

A spokesman for the polo club said Emma seemed to enjoy her day – especially tucking into the grass on the polo field.

“Emma was accompanied on the polo field by Terry Pendry CVO, BEM, the former stud groom and manager to Her late Majesty at Windsor Castle.

“In addition to Emma’s leading out of the teams in the polo final, members of Guards Polo Club and visitors to the Club on the day were able to meet Emma and have their photograph taken with her. She seemed very relaxed in this new role – she was more interested in eating the grass on the Queen’s Ground!”

The spokesman added: “Emma is currently participating in the Fell Pony Society’s Queen Elizabeth ll Memorial Challenge which will celebrate the life of our late Queen. Entrants are invited to compete 96 miles, one for each year of The late Queen’s life with their Fell ponies.”

Stable Cottage beat Sladmore 4-3 to win the Major General’s Cup on The Queen’s Ground. The most valuable player award went to Alexander Nix and the best playing pony was Mantecol owned by Charlie Wooldridge and Antony Fanshawe.

Guards also welcomed another special guest – Juno, the Household Cavalry’s first female drum horse; the Household Cavalry team beat the Porto Ronco Dogs 6-3 in the Wooden Spoon.

Shetland ponies greet The Queen as she visits birthplace of Black Beauty author

The Queen has visited the birthplace and home of the author of her favourite childhood book Black Beauty – and made friends with two Redwings residents.

Today (24 July) Her Majesty visited Anna Sewell House in Norfolk, where Anna Sewell was born in 1820. Redwings took over guardianship of the property last July when the owner approached the charity about occupying the building.

The Queen toured the building and met charity staff and trustees who talked with her about Anna and the influence her novel Black Beauty had on animal welfare. She also viewed early editions of the novel, including an English first edition featuring Anna’s original dedication to her aunts, and an American first edition, loaned by the Norfolk Library and Information Service. The Queen also met Redwings Shetland ponies Moses and Dhansak.

“It was a huge honour that Her Majesty The Queen chose to visit Anna Sewell House, which Redwings has been the custodian of since last year. We had a wonderful day,” said Redwings chief executive Lynn Cuttress.

“We understand that Black Beauty was The Queen’s favourite book as a child, and she told us that she was very excited to be visiting the house where the author of the novel was born and lived. Black Beauty is one of the selected books being promoted by Her Majesty’s own literacy charity, The Queen’s Reading Room.”

Ms Cuttress added that Black Beauty played an important part in drawing attention to horse welfare and is therefore “intertwined” with Redwings’ own story of “rescuing, rehoming, and giving a forever home to those who need it”.

Black Beauty was one of the first English novels to be written from the horse’s perspective and one of a select few books that has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. Anna died less than a year after it was published in 1877.

The Queen signed special copies of Redwings and the USEA Publishing Project’s new edition of the novel, edited by professor Thomas Ruys Smith, which will raise money for Redwings and is available to pre-order.

The late Queen’s stud groom has spoken of Her Majesty’s great equine loves – including her last and much-loved pony Emma.

Terry Pendry was a guest on episode 18 of the Fell Pony Podcast, hosted by Tom Lloyd, which was released on 26 June. He discussed his career, from racing to the Household Cavalry, serving Her Majesty for nearly half a century.

Mr Pendry was made a military knight in honour of his service this year, the latest accolade in his distinguished career.

“I’d willingly give all my medals back to enjoy just one more day with Her Majesty,” he said. “We miss her so badly.”

Mr Pendry said that, having had early riding experiences on cows, on his uncle Ray’s farm, which was “exhilarating”, his first pony, Kelly, was a £40 Hereford market buy.

“He was a hard taskmaster, who could buck for England,” he said. “I saw the orchard from an upside-down position, hanging out of apple and pear trees, but he turned out to be an incredible pony.”

Mr Pendry rode pointers, went into racing as an apprentice, then moved to London with his wife Sue.

“She wanted to see Princess Anne’s wedding presents, so we walked through Horse Guards Parade,” he said. “I thought ‘Horses. I know how to do that’, which is how I joined the Household Cavalry.”

During his time with the regiment, Mr Pendry rode in Trooping the Colour; his first in 1974 and every year since, escorting The Queen along The Mall on Burmese.

“You never get tired of it,” he said. “You can’t fail to be impressed by it, and it’s quite good fun, actually.”

Mr Pendry said it was probably his influence that led to Her Majesty’s involvement with Fell ponies.

“She was passionate about all our rare breeds, about wanting to save and look after them, in particular Fells and Highlands,” he said. “Sanction was her last riding horse, who we sadly lost in 2002, and really, she was getting to a certain age where I didn’t want her riding horses too much longer, because if she came off one, she wasn’t going to bounce. I encouraged her to swap to ponies.”

Showing producer Lizzie Briant put Mr Pendry in touch with the late Thomas Capstick, who owned Carltonlima Emma.

“He had this pony, and realised she wouldn’t last a winter on the fells,” Mr Pendry said. “He had her sold to Holland but I persuaded him that maybe he’d like to sell her to The Queen.

“He said he wanted pound notes with The Queen’s face on them. I said ‘Awfully sorry, she doesn’t deal in cash, but she banks with Coutts and she’s good for it’. He said he’d do it – and I said only if he put her in foal to his top stallion. He said ‘You’re a hard taskmaster, Mr Pendry’, but he did it.”

Mr Pendry said Emma always had “the most wonderful disposition”, and is still, aged 27, “firing on all cylinders”.

“She’s semi-retired, but doesn’t want to be,” he said. “She’s an absolutely amazing pony.”

Emma touched hearts across the world last year as she and Mr Pendry stood on the Long Walk at Windsor to say a final farewell to The Queen, and he said: “That was one of the saddest days of my life.

“I served Her Majesty for 20 years in the Household Cavalry and 28 direct. At least two thirds of my life in service to the sovereign, and I just had to do that.”

Mr Pendry said he knew, at Royal Windsor Horse Show 2022, “we didn’t have an awful lot of time left”.

“She rode right to the end,” he said. “She rode Emma on 18 July, then two days later left for Scotland. And we all know how she came home.”

Mr Pendry said there were two animals with whom The Queen had a “telepathic” connection; Sanction and Emma.

“If The Queen wanted to turn left, Sanction did it without her even thinking it, and Emma was one of the same,” he said. “The Queen absolutely adored her.”

‘It’s bittersweet’: horse bred by The late Queen triumphs for King and Queen at Royal Ascot

A hero was made at Royal Ascot today (22 June) in the form of the William Haggas-trained Desert Hero, who was bred by The late Queen, when he won the King George V Stakes under Tom Marquand for owners The King and Queen.

The three-year-old chestnut colt is bred in the purple by Sea The Stars, out of Dubai mare Desert Breeze, and he got his nose in front on the line under a great ride by Tom, having been sent off at odds of 18/1.

“This is genuinely one of the proudest moments of my life in the saddle so far,” said an emotional Tom. “I grew up watching horses win for Her late Majesty The Queen and to ride one for His Majesty the King is unbelievable. I’m in a dream world.

“Royal Ascot is the pinnacle and riding a royal winner at the royal meeting is so special.”

Desert Hero battled it out up the home straight in the latter stages of the 1m3f race alongside Valiant King, under Oisin Murphy for trainer Joseph O’Brien and owner Qatar Racing Limited, and eventually won by a head.

“I wasn’t always confident we were going to get there and win but this fella was supremely game and the Haggas team get it right time and time again,” said Tom.

Zara Tindall, The King’s niece, said: “It’s bittersweet – just think how proud and excited our grandmother The Queen would have been. But for Charles and Camilla to have a winner keeps the dream alive.

“What a race – it was incredible. Fulfilling the dream is amazing and the horses are at the centre of it – we love them.”

William Haggas said that to win for The King and Queen was “a great honour”.

“I thought Desert Hero and Tom were going to be more forward, but the other runners went a bit fast and ultimately he stayed on really well – it was the horse’s first time running over a mile and a half,” he said.

“The King and Queen have been looking forward to Royal Ascot for a long time and they are delighted. It’s important for horse racing and it’s important that they enjoy it.”

‘Everyone adores her’: The late Queen’s pony Emma wins award – and carrots

The Fell pony who was The Queen’s companion for the last 13 years of her life is “adored by everyone”, her former rider said.

Lizzie Briant, who showed Carltonlima Emma at events including Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) and the London International Horse Show, collected the 26-year-old’s Agria Horse of a Lifetime title, and a bag of carrots, at the Horse & Hound Awards, in partnership with NAF.

“I’m very honoured to be here, and can’t believe she’s won it,” Lizzie said. “I’m here on behalf of Terry Pendry, stud manager at Windsor Castle who unfortunately couldn’t be with us, but he will be absolutely made up about this.”

Lizzie explained that she “persuaded” Terry to buy Emma for The Queen as a brood mare.

“We managed to buy her in foal,” she said. “She had the most incredible temperament so I asked if I could show her, and Her Majesty said yes.”

Emma, who was “born on the fells” was successful in her short showing career; she stood Cuddy supreme champion at Devon County, and qualified for HOYS ridden finals and the Olympia mountain and moorland supreme championships final. She also appeared in three pageants at Royal Windsor.

She was last ridden by The late Queen on 18 July this year, and she touched hearts two months later as she stood on the Long Walk at Windsor Castle, Her Majesty’s headscarf carefully folded over the saddle, as the funeral cortege arrived.

“She’s a typical Fell,” Lizzie said. “She’s got the most incredible temperament, she’s sure-footed, she’s forward-going, she never minded any atmosphere. She’s never put a foot wrong; the most lovely ride and the kindest of mares.

“She’s 26 now and she’s very, very loved by all the team; Terry and his incredible team at the Royal Mews. She has the most incredible life – everyone adores her and she couldn’t ask for more.”

Emma has many progeny, and Lizzie said a three-year-old grandaughter of hers is due to arrive with her next week.

H&H editor-in-chief Sarah Jenkins said: “I don’t think we can overstate the love Her late Majesty The Queen had for horses – her native breed bloodlines, her Fells and Emma particularly. She put a great amount of expert knowledge into breeding from Emma – and others – to ensure the continuation of fine examples of these native breeds. I do so hope we will continue to see these animals Her Majesty loved so much, bred so well, and had produced beautifully for the show ring by riders like Lizzie Briant and Katie Jerram-Hunnable, shining in this way in her memory.”

Sarah added that few will forget seeing The Queen’s smile in the grounds of Windsor Castle as she enjoyed watching her horses and ponies shown at Royal Windsor Horse show, often to great success.

“Carltonlima Emma is a particularly fine example of her breed and had the perfect temperament to become Her Majesty’s much-loved hack,” she said. “We saw even during the last few years of her life The Queen out riding on Emma in Windsor – a wonderful picture of a happy partnership.

Miniature iconic statue of The late Queen with mare and foal sells for six figures

A bronze model of the famous statue of The late Queen with a mare and foal in Newmarket has found a new home with a great supporter of racing and Her Majesty thanks to a family museum visit this summer.

The miniature version of the iconic life-sized statue sold for 165,000 guineas (£173,250) ahead of the first Sceptre session at the Tattersalls December Sales on Monday (28 November), with all proceeds going to the National Horseracing Museum.

The maquette, by Etienne Millner and Charlie Langton, was knocked down to bloodstock agent Jamie McCalmont, on behalf of Hong Kong-based owner Marc Chan.

“On behalf of all the staff and volunteers at the National Horseracing Museum we would like to express our enormous thanks to Mr Chan for this huge gesture of support and confidence in the museum,” said museum director, Anne-Marie Hogan.

Only 12 maquettes of the statue were made, and The late Queen was presented with the first.

Mr McCalmont explained there were three reasons Mr Chan wanted to buy the model. On a visit to the museum with his family this summer, he was so impressed that he wanted to support it.

He added that Mr Chan was a great admirer of The Queen, hugely respecting her devotion and love of racing and as patron of the museum. Mr Chan saw the marquette on display at the museum, and another in private ownership, while visiting Newmarket and was very taken with it.

The final reason is that on 11 September, as The Queen’s funeral cortege made its way from Balmoral to Edinburgh, it passed through Kinross. At the same time, the town’s namesake – owned by Mr Chan – was winning the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster.

Ms Hogan added: “This is a very heart-warming story that even in death The Queen is still one of our greatest supporters.

“We would also like to thank Tattersalls for agreeing to conduct the auction and finally the Newmarket Commemoration Committee who had the foresight to arrange for the casting of the 12 maquettes as a fundraising tool for the museum.”

The life-sized statue of the miniature version sold on Monday is a well-known landmark, standing near the entrance of the Rowley Mile racecourse. It was given to Her Majesty as a gift from the town in the year of her 90th birthday. Following her death in September, the statue became a focal point for the town to lay floral tributes in her memory.

‘I hope I’ve done her proud’: official jubilee artist on the work The Queen never got to see

The Queen’s artist in residence for her Platinum Jubilee said the saddest part is that she will never see the full collection of work – but he hopes he has done her justice.

Freddy Paske, a former member of the Light Dragoons who was discovered thanks to the paintings he did from his tank in Afghanistan, was Her Majesty’s artist in the last year of her life, covering so many of the horses that were her passion. His work from this year is on display at Gallery Different, 14 Percy Street, Fitzrovia, London between 22-27 November.

Freddy told H&H he has always ridden, but also always wanted to go into the military.

“My father was in the Household Cavalry but I was in the Light Dragoons, which is similar, without the ceremonial role,” he said. “I played polo and hunted with them, which is the much better side of equestrian life in the military! I see how hard they work to produce and turn out those horses; it’s almost seven days a week in Knightsbridge, very different to hunting and playing polo.

“With the Army, I’ve always had this passion, it’s plagued me. My poor mother had a nightmare trying to get me to wear normal clothes; I remember at Pony Club junior camp, insisting on wearing camouflage, and her trying to get me into jodhpurs and a ratcatcher, but fancy dress was brilliant. We chopped down a bush and dressed the Shetland pony as a tank, with me on top dressed as a soldier.”

After university, Freddy went on tour, of Helmand province in Afghanistan in 2012, then Bosnia in a different role in 2014.

“It’s funny; it’s been said before that tours are 90% extreme boredom and 10% sheer terror, a bizarre mix, but I was very lucky,” he said. “Others weren’t but from a selfish point of view, that was probably the launch of my art career. In Afghanistan, a war artist came to visit us and I was chatting to her and showed her some of my sketchbooks. To decompress, normally before evening orders, I would get out of sketchbook and paint the scenery in front of me from my tank. It helped retain a bit of myself, and when the artist put on an exhibition, she said she’d love to exhibit some of my work as well. Amazingly, everything sold, and that was the start.”

Freddy started painting commissions of horses, then approached the Household Cavalry about being the regiment’s artist in residence for a year, a coveted role. He did the same for Tattersalls and the Jockey Club, neither of which, he believes, had had one before, then the Household Cavalry asked him to come back to the role for The Queen’s jubilee year.

“That was amazing as I don’t think they’ve had anyone back before and it was such a privilege,” he said. “I started at the Royal Mews and met the lovely Crown Equerry Toby Brown. He said it was a great plan but we needed to run it past the Queen. I wasn’t prepared but my poor printers turned round a portfolio the next day to be taken to The Queen and a week later, he said “You’ll be delighted to know, The Queen has approved the role”, and that’s how it was born. Gosh, what a year.”

Freddy went to Oman to visit the Royal Cavalry, and to Paris to see the Garde Republicaine; both took part in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations at Royal Windsor Horse Show. He covered the show and the celebrations there and the official jubilee weekend celebrations. He also, unexpectedly, covered Her Majesty’s funeral processions.

“There was pressure but I can’t convey how much of an honour it was,” he said. “To be approved by The Queen, going to places I’d never have been. The saddest thing is that it was all done in The Queen’s honour and she never got to see the full collection. It was such a privilege and I hope I’ve done it proud.”

14 of The Queen’shorses tobe sold this week

The King is selling some of the horses he inherited from his late mother The Queen at Tattersalls this week.

His Majesty has 14 horses in training listed in this week’s Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale (24-27 October). It is the largest sale of its kind in the world, with some 1,500 horses for sale.

The royal family has about 50 horses in training, and selling some of these at the end of each season is normal, as is the fact the horses are being consigned by their trainers.

Six horses were due to go under the hammer today; two-year-olds Persian Gold, Constitution and Juryman, and three-year-olds Duty Bound, Spring Is Sprung and Tack.

Five more are to be sold tomorrow; Theme Park 2 and Just Fine, four, and three-year-olds Kiteflyer, Naval College General Idea. On Wednesday, two-year-olds Quiet Life, Love Affairs and four-year-old Tactical will be sold.

Tattersalls spokesman Jimmy George said the sales did not mean a change to the royal family’s connection with racing: “It’s nothing out of the ordinary. Every year they would sell horses,” he said.

“Every year owners sell stock. His Majesty is just doing what owners do.”

The Queen’s horses line up as HOYS presents award for a ‘devoted horsewoman’

Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) has paid a special tribute to Her late Majesty The Queen by naming her equestrian of the year – in front of her horses and ponies.

Show organisers Grandstand present the award every year; past recipients include Robert Oliver, Charlotte Dujardin and Richard Davison.

“This year’s no exception,” said HOYS showing commentator Carey Knox. “But this year is doubly special as we are presenting it to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”

Carey welcomed into the ring some of The Queen’s horses and ponies who had enjoyed success at HOYS. The great Barbers Shop, who went from racing to be supreme ridden champion at Royal Windsor Horse Show, and qualified for HOYS five years running, came in under his long-term partner Katie Jerram-Hunnable. He was given to Katie’s mother Jill Jerram when he retired.

Balmoral Erica, a 15-year-old mare who has taken part in three pageants at Royal Windsor, came third in the Cuddy in-hand final at HOYS and was champion at the Royal International Horse Show under saddle, came in with Lizzie Finlayson-Briant. She was joined by former Royal Windsor mountain and moorland champion Balmoral Leia, with Henry Hird, 2022 small riding horse contender Fools Paradise, with Chris Hunnable, and skewbald gelding Sunbeam, who competed in today’s coloured classes, handled by Katie’s son Oliver Moore.

The award was accepted by Crown Equerry Colonel Toby Browne, head of the Royal Mews, with current mews grooms Brandon Heaton and Charlotte Watson, and former groom Alice Watson, along with The Queen’s great-granddaughters Savannah and Isla Phillips.

“As an extraordinary person who led an extraordinary life, The Queen gave so much to the equestrian community,” a spokesman for HOYS organisers Grandstand said.

“It is for this reason that Horse of the Year Show felt that this award with a special place in the prominence of the event would be no better attributed to a devoted horsewoman – Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”

As Stephanie Hill sang I Vow to Thee My Country, photographs of The Queen’s life with horses, from childhood into her 90s, were displayed on the big screen.

‘I should like to be a horse’: HOYS’ walls adorned with Queen’s horses and words in her memory

The team behind Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) has paid tribute to The Queen with pictures of some of her horses and ponies who have appeared here over the years.

The walk from the Andrews Bowen International Arena to the shopping village is usually adorned with pictures of top combinations in different disciplines.

But for this year, the event running a month after Her Majesty’s death aged 96, the walls are lined with some of her much-loved equine superstars, from racehorse turned showing star Barbers Shop to Highland pony Balmoral Erica.

There are also pictures of her with top riders, such as presenting a trophy to Ted Williams at HOYS in 1957, and at the King’s Troop 70th anniversary parade, 60 years later.

“As an equestrian event we understand and appreciate the true affinity that Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had with horses, and we felt that it would be appropriate to honour and celebrate this lifetime passion at Horse of the Year Show 2022,” a spokesman for HOYS organisers Grandstand told H&H.

“The overwhelming equestrian knowledge that Her Majesty exuded was remarkable and we wanted to celebrate the horses who had competed at HOYS and were bred and owned by the late monarch.”

Also on the walls are some of Her Majesty’s quotes, such as: “When life seems hard, the courageous do not lie down and accept defeat; instead they are all the more determined to struggle for a better future,” which was part of the 2008 Christmas speech.

One short quote was something Princess Elizabeth told a reporter as a child.

“I should like to be a horse,” she said.

‘She will continue to be loved’: new picture released of The Queen’s pony Emma

A new photograph has been released of The Queen’s Fell pony Emma, who touched hearts as she was seen standing guard as her late owner came home.

The 26-year-old mare stood on the flower-strewn Long Walk as Her Majesty’s coffin was borne home after her funeral on 19 September. She was held by Terry Pendry LVO, BEM, stud groom and manager to The Queen at Windsor Castle, with Her Majesty’s headscarf folded over her saddle.

“For the past 15 years, Queen Elizabeth regularly rode Emma for light exercise in the grounds around Windsor Castle, during Her Majesty’s private time,” a spokesman for the palace said.

“Emma will continue to be much loved and cared for at the Royal Mews, Windsor, and regularly exercised by its small, dedicated team.”

Emma, whose full name is Carltonlima Emma, is by Tebay Campbell Ton Victor, out of Heltondale Daisy IV.

The Queen bought her as an eight-year-old in 2004, and the mare went on to a “short but successful competition career”.

She was Cuddy supreme champion at Devon County Show in 2006, and qualified for the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) and for the London International Horse Show, Olympia.

When she retired, in December 2007, Emma returned to the Royal Mews at Windsor, and from there The Queen hacked her in the private grounds of the castle.

She appeared in pageants at Royal Windsor Horse Show, to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, her 90th birthday celebrations and the Platinum Jubilee this year.

‘The Queen wanted a home-bred to win at HOYS… and I’ve done it’: SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse champion crowned

Katie Jerram-Hunnable could not hold back the tears as she was called forward to take the 2022 SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse championship on the first day of the 2022 Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), riding The King’s five-year-old First Receiver.

Previously owned by his breeder, The Queen, First Receiver qualified for HOYS at Burghley Horse Trials and was Her Majesty’s final show ring winner before she died.

“When I first rode for Her Majesty 20 years ago she said she wanted to win HOYS with a home-bred, and I’ve finally done it for her,” said an emotional Katie, who has finished runner-up at HOYS for The Queen on four different occasions. “I, like the rest of the world, was so upset when Her Majesty passed away. She had so much passion for horses, and the one thing she wanted to do was to win here with a horse she bred. I was so nervous before the class due to the anticipation; I just wanted to do the job properly for her.”

The New Approach bay gelding has been out of racing training for 18 months. He was trained by Sir Michael Stoute and has won five out of seven outings this season in the show ring.

“We were looking for well-mannered rides, which were light in the hand and the champion delivered,” said ride judge Magnus Nicholson. “To get these horses to perform here is an amazing achievement, especially considering the pressure of the atmosphere and given the size of the arena. It’s asking a lot of them.”

Second place in the 2022 SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse final was another five-year-old, Tracey Bailey riding her own and Chris Graham’s Debt Of Honour, who was also in training with Sir Michael Stoute. By Kyllachy, the bay gelding qualified for HOYS at Onley Equestrian Centre.

Sarah Gwilliam and Sar Cassidy-Hill’s Imperial Ruby posted third.

Grey Shires perform final act of service for The Queen

A pair of Shire horses who appeared in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations at Royal Windsor Horse Show have undertaken a final act of service for The Queen.

Operation Centaur’s working Shires Heath and Nobby, aged 17 and 14 respectively, have been helping collect the many thousands of floral tributes in Green Park and Hyde Park.

The pair, who both stand at 18.3hh, pulled flatbed drays – a traditional open card usually used in conservation work across the Royal Parks – to help collect the flowers left by members of the public in tribute to Her Majesty.

They took the bouquets to the leaf pen in Kensington Gardens, where they will be blended with leaf litter and other green waste, to be composted and turned into mulch. That compost will in turn be used in London’s parks, including for the floral displays outside Buckingham Palace.

“The thousands of tributes that have been left held great sentiment for the people who travelled from all over the country to mark their respects for The Queen and they have created a tranquil and beautiful garden visited by so many,” said Andrew Williams, park manager at Kensington Gardens, the Royal Parks.

“We felt that it was appropriate to continue the story of the tributes by creating compost at our green-waste facility here in Kensington Gardens, to support new shoots of life and colourful displays of flowers in spring.

“The mulch generated from the organic material will enrich the soil of the Royal Parks over the coming years.

“The flowers will provide pleasure to the millions of visitors to the Royal Parks in the future, and will enhance these incredible green spaces within London by providing a valuable habitat for invertebrates including bees and butterflies.”

Staff and volunteers filled the working drays with the bouquets and other artefacts, removing any remaining cellophane wrappings and elastic bands, ensuring that only organic material is composted.

Cards, teddies and other artefacts are being stored in the Royal Parks, while a decision is made on what to do with them. The waste plastic is being sent to a materials recovery facility, which will separate out anything that can be recycled.

Operation Centaur is a London-based equine charity that works with rare breed heavy horses in conservation, heritage, equine therapy and community projects.

Every year as the outdoor season draws to a close, I head to Canada for the always memorable Spruce Meadows Masters tournament, the final Major of the summer.

I still look back with excitement when I recall announcing Scott Brash as the winner of the Rolex Grand Slam in 2015, a day in history which no other rider has yet managed to replicate.

The year before that saw sunshine turn to snow, and over 200 people with true Calgarian spirit hand-shovelled over 1ft in snow off the entire international ring and helped restore essential services to allow the competition to continue.

This year brought a mixture of memories and emotions as seven of the world’s top-10 riders rode through the iconic clock tower. It was on the second day that we heard the heartbreaking news that Her Majesty The Queen had died.

Pageantry is a key element of the Masters with the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and 50 members of the Household Cavalry band all in attendance. Very quickly, the Spruce Meadows team had to help facilitate the immediate return trip of these serving soldiers who now had pressing ceremonial duties to perform.

Whether I am on television or commentating, I rarely script anything. I find ad-libbing provides a much more natural delivery. However, when it came to breaking the news of The Queen’s death, I made an exception. As competition paused, it was the most difficult few paragraphs I have ever had to deliver.

A commonwealth stadium fell silent, and although my commentary position is far from the stands, I was told of the tears and hugs shared by an audience who appreciated Her Majesty as a monarch, but also as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who shared their love of the horse.

The Queen has always had a place in the hearts of those at Spruce Meadows. Her visit there in 1990 is still widely talked about with much fondness. The venue co-founder, Marg Southern, was Her Majesty’s lady-in-waiting, and the Queen Elizabeth II Cup still features as a focal point in the summer series.

“What our sport is all about”

A standout campaign grew to a climax for Britain’s Matt Sampson. After grafting his way through the national grades, it’s fantastic to see his talent and ambitions realised. Just two years ago, he was struggling to get into shows in Europe. Since June, he has won 20 FEI competitions; he and his partner Kara Chad work tremendously hard and I couldn’t be happier for them.

The CP International grand prix, won this year by Daniel Deusser and Killer Queen VDM, is the toughest competition in the world. The athletes know what to expect and if you’re a showjumping purist, then it has all the ingredients to make your taste buds tingle. It’s also the richest day in our sport with $3m on offer, with Rolex Grand Slam bonuses on top.

The time allowed is always a factor, and when added with the unique fence material, mostly purchased from Olympics and championships, and the course design by Leopoldo Palacios, you better walk the track twice and make sure you’ve had a good breakfast!

After two rounds, we were left with three double clears. Coming into the final round, a jump-off against the clock, I couldn’t resist saying, “It’s time to play, who wants to be a millionaire!” It’s cheesy, but unless Jeremy Clarkson leaves the ITV show and a few others step aside, it’s the only time I’ll get to use that line.

I mentioned when Daniel entered the ring, “all” he had to do was jump clear – no pressure. As he came down to the last, a delicate vertical, I whispered to a sold-out stadium, “Jump this for a million dollars,” and luckily, he did.

This horsemanship, drama and excitement is what our sport is all about.

The Queen’s racehorses transferred to The King with first to run tomorrow

The King will have his first runner as Britain’s monarch tomorrow (29 September), following the death of his mother The Queen.

The William Haggas-trained Educator, a three-year-old colt bred by The Queen, will run in The Radcliffe and Co Handicap Stakes at Salisbury at 4.54pm.

Weatherbys confirmed the ownership of all of The Queen’s racehorses has been transferred to The King.

“All horses in training previously owned by Her Majesty The Queen have been transferred to His Majesty King Charles III, and will race in the name of The King, wearing the colours previously registered to The Queen, specifically purple, gold braid, scarlet sleeves, black velvet cap and gold fringe,” said the spokesperson.

This brings an end to speculation that The Queen’s racehorses might have been transferred to run under the ownership of Queen Consort Camilla, who is a fan of the sport.

British Horseracing Authority chairman Joe Saumarez Smith said: “The loss of Her late Majesty was keenly felt within the racing and breeding industries given her lifelong passion for the sport, and so we are naturally thrilled to see that the horses previously owned by her will race on in the ownership of His Majesty King Charles III.

“Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II left an indelible mark on our sport and her legacy will continue to be felt, not only through the horses that will continue to run in the name of King Charles III, but also those she bred who are yet to be seen on the racecourse in the years to come. We wish Educator and King Charles III the very best of luck on Thursday, and keenly look forward to further successes in those famous royal silks on British racecourses.”

The King has had runners in Britain this season with Pride Of The Pack and Cygneture racing for him and the Queen Consort under their previous titles of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

The King also has several other horses entered into races over the next month, including King’s Lynn, Improvise, Mellow Yellow, Perfect Alibi and Tactical.

Her Majesty’s life with horses celebrated by Horse & Hound

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s life with horses is celebrated in a special collectors’ edition of Horse & Hound.

From the tiny princess’s first experience of the “satiny softness” of her father King George VI’s racehorses to the Fell pony Emma, who stood guard as her funeral cortege arrived at Windsor Castle, horses were the source of lifelong joy to The Queen.

The Queen’s Fell pony Emma attends Her Majesty’s funeral

One of The Queen’s ponies, Emma, a Fell pony mare, made a moving appearance in proceedings for Her Majesty’s state funeral on Monday 19 September.

The Queen’s pony Emma stood relaxed during the funeral procession as hundreds marched towards Her Majesty’s final resting place. Emma’s handler Terry Pendry LVO, BEM, stud groom and manager to The Queen at Windsor Castle, bowed his head as The Queen’s coffin passed. Many horse lovers, as well as the wider public, were deeply touched that one of the horses who had played such an important role in Her Majesty’s favourite pastime should be part of the day.

In a feature in Horse & Hound in 2021, The Queen revealed her favourite horses for an article by Terry, who wrote: “Emma has been a wonderful servant to Her Majesty and [was] still going strong at the age of 24 as one of The Queen’s riding ponies.”

Even in recent years The Queen enjoyed riding in the grounds at Windsor, often accompanied by Terry. Her Majesty famously opted to ride in a headscarf rather than a hat. It was particularly poignant therefore that a headscarf was placed over Emma’s saddle as she stood waiting for The Queen’s coffin to pass.

It was after 2002 when her favourite home-bred riding horse Sanction passed away, that Her Majesty made the decision to start riding her native ponies rather than riding horses – “A little nearer to the ground, so to speak.”

It is not the first time Emma has played a part in important occasions, as Terry wrote: “The Fell Pony Society came to honour The Queen’s 90th birthday and said they would like to bring 90 ponies. They came with 120! They lined the red route of the castle for Her Majesty, who sat on His Royal Highness’ driving Fell pony team followed by Emma. It truly was a wonderful day.”

Such is the pony’s fame that in 2016 a Breyer model was made of her, in part to raise funds for the Fell Pony Society – of which Her Majesty was a patron – and Girlguiding.

An emotional silence, then a splendid soprano: Blenheim pays respects to The Queen

All action stopped at midday on each of the four days of Blenheim Horse Trials to pay respects to Her Majesty The Queen after her death on 8 September.

In a moving communal show of appreciation, the competition was paused and everyone on the Oxfordshire site stood, heads bowed, for a two-minute silence, followed by an emotional rendition of the National Anthem sung by soprano Laura Wright. Riders were also wearing black armbands.

Laura spoke about the honour of singing at Blenheim Palace in front of a passionate eventing crowd, who share their love of horses with The Queen.

“It means the world to me to stand here in front of this crowd who are so passionate, and that her late Majesty The Queen was so passionate about this place,” she said. “Not only is it steeped in history, but people all around us who are so passionate [about horses] being able to pay their respects in this very special way is such a great honour.

“As a performer, you hold everyone else’s emotions and the moment you start singing you either hear people starting to join in with you, or they give you that confidence to sing those words. We’re hearing different words for the first time in 70 years. My young daughters won’t know anything other than ‘God save The King’ now. It’s a very, very emotional time for everyone.”

Blenheim Horse Trials was not the first time during this period of mourning that Laura has performed in front of sports fans. She also sang the National Anthem at the start of the third test match between England and South Africa, at the Oval on 10 September – the first time this version had been officially sung at a sporting event since the time of King George VI.

Laura, 32, has also performed at the opening ceremony for Prince Harry’s inaugural Invictus Games, and the Grand National, and was involved in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations with her song Stronger As One.

She has also met The Queen, for the first time when she was 16.

“I’d echo the words of so many people who have had experiences with [The Queen], those stories of humour and kindness and generosity,” she said. “I met her at the Royal Albert Hall, and she just had this way of making you feel comfortable, secure and really like you were the only person in the room she was speaking to – which is quite something when you think of the many hundreds of thousands of people she met in her time.”

Horse sport to halt as equestrian world pays tribute to The Queen

Equestrian sport and racing will be suspended on Monday, 19 September, the date of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, to give the horse world the opportunity to pay its respects to Her Majesty.

The date has been announced as a bank holiday, and governing bodies for racing, showjumping and dressage have confirmed no sport will take place. No eventing is scheduled for 19 September.

“This will give everyone involved in British racing the opportunity to mourn Her late Majesty’s passing and offer thanks for her contribution to our sport and the nation,” said a British Horseracing Authority spokesman.

He added that more information will be shared with participants, racecourses and racegoers in the coming days, and that racing will take place as scheduled throughout the remainder of the intervening period.

The sporting world paid to Queen Elizabeth II with two-minute silences, flags at half-mast and some rescheduling of fixtures on Friday (8 September) and over the weekend. Marks of respect to Her Majesty and her enormous contribution to the horse world are expected to continue at fixtures this week.

The two biggest horse sport fixtures scheduled in the UK this week – Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials and the LeMieux National Dressage Championships (both 15 to 18 September) – are scheduled to go ahead. There will be a two minute silence held at 12pm each day at Blenheim, after which sporting soprano Laura Wright will sing the national anthem.

The British squad will compete at the World Eventing Championships in Pratoni (15 to 18 September) with horses departing Stansted Airport for Italy this morning (12 September).

“We can confirm that there is no formal obligation for organisations or venues to cancel or postpone sporting fixtures and events, at either elite or grassroots level, between now and the state funeral,” said a British Dressage (BD) spokesman, confirming all BD competition and training will be cancelled on the day of the funeral.

“Decisions will remain at the discretion of the individual organisers and venues to consider how they should proceed during the national mourning period.

“As a mark of respect, if events are held, organisers may wish to hold a period of silence and/or play the National Anthem at the start of their fixture, and competitors may wish to wear black armbands during this time.

“British Dressage will support the decision of individual organisers regarding their fixtures, but our recommendation is that they should continue as planned, with a two-minute silence scheduled at an appropriate point before or during the competition.

“Flags should be flown at half-mast for the duration of the mourning period, and where activity continues it should do so in a respectful manner, in keeping with the mood of the nation at this time, while celebrating The Queen’s immense contribution to equestrian sport over the 70 years of her reign.”

He added: “We request that the dressage community respects the wishes of any organisers or venues who wish to cancel their fixtures or training during the national mourning period. We also fully respect the decision of any rider, owner, or coach that chooses not to participate in any competition or training activity at this time.”

A BS spokesman said it hopes its members “understand the significance of this decision” for the date of the funeral and “will join in reflecting on the life of our long-standing patron”.

Goodbye, Ma’am: horses and riders gather to pay respects on The Queen’s final journey

As crowds lined the streets to pay their respects to The Queen on her final journey, what could have been more fitting than an equestrian guard of honour?

As Her Majesty’s coffin made its way from Balmoral to Edinburgh over the weekend, among those who came out to say goodbye were cavalcades of horses and riders, in tribute to one of the greatest equestrians of all.

Emma Cheape’s family welcomed horses, riders and people on foot, to their fields bordering the M90, along which The Queen’s coffin was driven yesterday (11 September).

“It was a moment that won’t be forgotten very quickly,” Emma told H&H.

“I put a post on Facebook on Saturday night saying if anyone local wanted to join me in the field, they’d be welcome, thinking maybe two or three people would come, and we ended up with 32 horses and about 40 people on foot. It was amazing.”

Emma said the group spanned generations; from the local Pony Club branch out in force to “us oldies”, with some who had hacked there and others who had travelled their horses 40 minutes to be part of the occasion.

“The horses were all standing in a line and when she was about five minutes away, we walked closer, and the horses held a beautiful line,” she said. “There were helicopters overhead, but not a horse moved; it was like they knew.

“There were tears, and it was a bit eerie; the road was quiet, the field went silent. Princess Anne and her husband were in the car behind and she pointed us out and they both waved. It was lovely.”

Emma added that she has been inundated with messages, from as far away as New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

“Someone messaged to say some people in Scotland want independence, but we showed how united we can be as a country,” she said. “We all came together for one cause, and stood and paid our respects.

“How many other people have survived for that many years, and still been working two days before they died? It was also paying our respects for what she’s given her life for, for what she’s done. It was a special day.”

Horse sport pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II amid plans for coming days

The sporting world is paying tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with two-minute silences and some rescheduling planned for fixtures taking place over the coming days.

British Eventing (BE) fixtures will go ahead today (Friday, 9 September) and over the weekend, with a two-minute silence on each day. BE will also be implementing a media blackout until 9am on Monday.

The sole international eventing fixture planned in Britain this week, Cornbury House Horse Trials, is continuing, while paying respects to Her Majesty.

“Everyone involved in the Cornbury House Horse Trials is deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty the Queen and join the rest of the country and millions of people around the world in mourning,” said a statement from the event.

“After much consideration and following consultation with British Eventing and the Government, as our riders and horses are with us and in the middle of the horse trials, we will continue for the final three days on a non-commercial basis and will refund all Friday, Saturday and Sunday tickets regardless of whether spectators choose to attend.

“We fully support the personal decisions of our riders, owners, volunteers and spectators as we continue.”

The event held a two-minute silence at noon today for the eventing community to “pay our respects to Her Majesty and her extraordinary life and service”.

The decision was made not to show Cornbury’s cross-country on the live stream, but it will be recorded and shown at a later date.

British Showjumping, of which The Queen was patron for 70 years, held a two-minute silence at all UK shows today. Fixtures will continue as scheduled this weekend. The British team at the veteran European Championships in Germany are wearing black armbands, with the hosts flying the Union Flag at half-mast.

British Dressage fixtures are going ahead today – and expected to run over the weekend – with a two-minute silence observed.

The sole team chasing fixture schedule for this weekend, the Belvoir team chase and hunter trial, will go ahead on Sunday.

A statement from the organisers said that even though the fixture is going ahead, they are “very aware of recent events” and it “will be run with this in mind”.

The British Show Horse Association cancelled its championship show at Arena UK after the news broke. Competitors on site last night observed a two minute silence and the national anthem was played.

All British racing fixtures were suspended after the news of Her Majesty’s passing broke on Thursday afternoon, with meetings cancelled today and tomorrow. Racing will resume on Sunday at all planned courses, with the exception of Musselburgh out of respect for the fact that The Queen’s body will be lying in rest in Edinburgh.

An additional, amended nine-race card is also programmed for Sunday at Doncaster, featuring the rescheduled Cazoo St Leger and other key races from the abandoned Doncaster days. Five races will be shown on ITV 4, with the whole card broadcast on Sky Sports Racing.

“Her Majesty the Queen’s affinity and bond with British racing was enduring and unique, and a number of our sport’s participants have a close, direct relationship with her,” said British Horseracing Authority chief executive Jullie Harrington.

“It is out of respect for this, and in sympathy with her family including King Charles III, that the sport has taken the decision to continue our suspension of fixtures into Saturday.

“The return of racing on Sunday will see the running of the Cazoo St Leger, one of Britain’s five Classic races and a race which the Queen won with her filly Dunfermline in 1977. This will also provide an opportunity for the sport and its supporters to pay its respects to Her Majesty, for the contribution which she has made to the sport to be marked, and for racing to express its deep gratitude to her and sympathies to her family.”

The decision to cancel racing on Saturday was also made to allow those involved in the sport to take in the formal proclamation of King Charles III’s reign on Saturday afternoon.

All racecourses will mark Her Majesty’s passing with on-course tributes during the mourning period.

A period of silence will be observed ahead of each opening race, jockeys will wear black armbands and flags will fly at half-mast.

“These marks of respect will continue to be observed until Her Majesty’s funeral next week, and further updates will follow in due course,” said a BHA spokesman.

“Decisions will be made in due course about other important days in the mourning period, such as the commencement of Her Majesty lying in state and the day of the funeral, as details are confirmed.

“We remain in close consultation with Government as part of this process. We would highlight that this decision has been made to reflect Her Majesty the Queen’s special relationship with racing, and that other sports will, in line with national mourning guidance, make their own decisions as they see appropriate.”

The Racing Welfare-organised Epsom and Malton open days, scheduled for Sunday are cancelled.

“In light of the incredibly sad passing of Her Majesty The Queen, some trainers no longer felt comfortable in opening their yards, while the revised racing fixture for Sunday has also meant that for others, it is no longer possible to open,” said a statement from the charity.

National Racehorse Week will otherwise mainly be going ahead, starting a day later than originally billed. Events due to take place tomorrow are cancelled, in line with British racing’s suspension of all fixtures, with the week now starting on Sunday and running until 18 September.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty the Queen and send our heartfelt condolences to all of the Royal Family at this time,” said Rod Street, chief executive of Great British Racing.

“Her Majesty The Queen’s knowledge and love of the thoroughbred was unrivalled and we want to honour this by continuing with National Racehorse Week.

“What better way for people to express their love and gratitude for The Queen than to get close to the very animals that brought her such immense pleasure throughout her life.

“Over the coming days thousands of people will be welcomed at yards up and down the country. Continuing with this event is a way to mark and reflect Her Majesty’s lifelong love of racing.”

A decision on the Sir Henry Cecil Open Weekend in Newmarket (17 to 18 September) will be taken early next week.

All hunting activities are currently suspended.

The House of Windsor effect: how The Queen’s love of horses impacted the equestrian world #H&HArchives

During her seven decades on the throne, the effect of The Queen’s love of horses has extended not only to her family, but to the equestrian world at large, says Horse & Hound’s former Editor Michael Clayton, in this exclusive article first published in Horse & Hound on 10 June 2021

FROM early childhood our Queen was a horse-lover, but no one could have foreseen the immense contribution she would make to all our riding sports.

Everyone who shares The Queen’s passion for horses is in her debt, none more so than my generation, who were brought up during the deprivations of World War II. It was by no means guaranteed that equestrianism in Britain would blossom in the early post-war years of economic austerity. The lead given by the royal family was a crucial factor in the huge growth of riding as a widely popular sport.

We saw Princess Elizabeth, a stylish figure, as a consummate horsewoman in public, when she appeared riding side-saddle in a dark blue habit, at the 1947 Trooping the Colour ceremony, the first since the war.

It was an annual duty she has fulfilled ever since, arriving by horse-drawn carriage from 1987. There was always an element of risk in this parade, emphasised in 1981 when a youth fired blank shots near The Queen, who rode on coolly on her horse Burmese, a black mare who carried her for 17 consecutive years on ceremonial parades.

Her marriage in 1947 to the Duke of Edinburgh brought to the nation a level of glamour and excitement which defeated the greyness of that time. Princess Elizabeth received a filly, Astrakhan, as a wedding present from the Aga Khan, and soon registered her own colours: scarlet, purple hooped sleeves, black cap.

Since her teens, the heir to the throne shared the close interest of her father, King George VI, in thoroughbred breeding and racing, but the wider horse world would also benefit from the future Queen’s patronage. Nearly every major equestrian activity would involve at least one member of The Queen’s close family as breeder, owner, or competitor.

DURING conversations over lunch at Sandown Park before the Horse & Hound Grand Military Gold Cup, of which she was patron, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother recalled to me something of the late King George’s passion for riding and hunting: “They were such happy, carefree days,” she said with a glowing smile.

Our Queen inherited her love of horses and country life from both her parents. As well as a recreation, equestrianism is an important royal tradition, going back to the monarchy’s reliance on horsepower in ceremony and war.

The future King George VI won a pre-war reputation as the most polished horseman of the royal brothers, on the polo ground and in the hunting field. As Duke of York he took a hunting box with his family at Naseby in the Pytchley country for several seasons in the 1930s. In 1931 Princess Elizabeth, aged five, rode a pony to see the Pytchley’s huntsman, Frank Freeman, hunting hounds for the last time. As Freeman’s fox went away from covert the Princess was watching on her pony nearby, held by a groom standing next to the Queen Mother. Princess Elizabeth started riding lessons that year with Henry Owen, groom at White Lodge, Richmond Park, and in 1938 she received more training as a rider from Horace Smith who had a yard at Holyport, Berkshire. His daughter Sybil later gave Prince Charles and Princess Anne their first riding lessons.

Princess Anne remembered later: “We were both on a leading rein, and we were towed around a cinder ring, never faster than a trot… I thought it was a most grisly waste of time.”

During the height of the war, in 1943, Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret appeared at a local show in aid of Windsor Wings for Victory Week. It was so relaxed that a runaway lurcher stole a chicken from the caterer’s tent, and sat chewing it under the King’s chair.

Princess Elizabeth proved she could drive as well as ride. With her sister as passenger, she competed in the single private driving turnout class with a Norwegian pony called Hans. The future Queen won the cup, and Princess Margaret drove a Fell pony, Windsor Gypsy, to win a trophy in the utility driving class.

The wartime fixture was the forerunner of the magnificent annual Royal Windsor Horse Show, and an example of the thread of continuity in The Queen’s interest in horses.

Racing provided an excellent opportunity to learn horsemanship through watching her father’s horses in training. Although Flat racing was to be The Queen’s main interest, her first victory was in a steeplechase at a Fontwell Park National Hunt meeting where her new colours were carried to victory by Monaveen, jointly owned with the Queen Mother, and trained by Peter Cazalet.

The Queen supported her mother’s involvement in National Hunt, sharing her triumphs and disappointments, the worst being her runner Devon Loch’s collapse when in the lead of the 1956 Grand National.

I have never seen The Queen happier on a racecourse than when she presented the 1986 Horse & Hound Grand Military Gold Cup to the Queen Mother after the third victory of her horse Special Cargo, well ridden by Gerald Oxley, despite a broken stirrup.

It is part of racing legend that on the morning of her coronation in 1953 The Queen was asked beforehand by a lady-in-waiting if all was well, and replied: “Oh yes, the Captain has rung to say Aureole is really well.”

Four days later, her colt Aureole, ridden by Harry Carr and trained by Captain Sir Cecil Boyd Rochfort, was beaten into second place in the Derby by Pinza. Since then The Queen’s horses have won the other Classics, but a Derby victory is still wanting.

With Lord Porchester as her general racing manager, and Sir Michael Oswald in charge of the bloodstock breeding side, The Queen’s involvement in thoroughbred breeding was intensified. She has a profound knowledge of thoroughbred pedigrees, and her expertise extends far more widely: she has successfully bred polo ponies for Prince Charles, eventers for Princess Anne, carriage horses for Prince Philip, plus Highland, Fell and Haflinger ponies, Arab horses…even a project to produce drum horses for the Household Cavalry.

THE Queen was a keen horsey mother, too. She is in the unique position of being the mother of a European eventing champion in Princess Anne, and grandmother to a European and world eventing champion in Zara Tindall.

Princess Anne’s heavy fall with her horse Goodwill in the 1976 Montreal Olympics three-day event was no laughing matter. The Queen and Prince Philip were present, and I remember them racing round to see if she was all right. The Princess was pretty much unconscious, but remounted and completed the course for the sake of the British team. It was a brave effort because she said afterwards she could remember nothing more of the ride.

We are used to seeing The Queen as a nonagenarian riding sedate horses on exercise in Windsor Great Park, but I recall her as a young woman galloping with great zest on Ascot racecourse. She made these excursions with relatives and friends in her Windsor Castle house party on the mornings before racing. As a press correspondent I reported a hazardous occasion when the royal party galloped under the taut wires of the old-style starting “tapes”. The Queen only just ducked her head in time to avoid what could have been a dreadful fall.

As an experienced, natural horsewoman, The Queen is well aware of the risks, but she has persisted in riding hatless on her private hacks. It was not the custom to wear protective headgear, nor was it readily available, during The Queen’s early life, and her unwillingness to abandon this practice has been respected as a royal prerogative in a long life in which private riding has been such a valuable respite from her demanding public schedule.

When the Prince took up steeplechasing, I recall The Queen admitting to feeling “very nervous” before the 1981 Horse & Hound Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown Park. Prince Charles was riding his new horse Good Prospect in the race, falling at the 18th fence.

The Queen said very little, but there was a palpable sense of relief in the royal box when Charles regained his feet. The Prince’s determination was demonstrated when he rode the same horse the following week in the Kim Muir race at Cheltenham, and survived another fall. He had several wins in lesser chases, and was a bold rider in team chasing.

WHEN The Queen and Prince Philip visited our company’s range of magazines in 1978, then produced at King’s Reach Tower in Stamford Street, next to the Thames, Horse & Hound’s editorial office was the first port of call. In those days, the magazine was published on Fridays, and a royal carriage would come to the offices on Thursday to collect three copies for Buckingham Palace. Unfortunately the antis picked up on this, and Special Branch discovered that they were planning to kidnap the horse and carriage, so we quietly switched to couriering the copies by car.

Around that time, I was mortified by what I call “Horse & Hound’s greatest mistake”. I was invited to tea at Windsor Great Park for a polo cup we sponsored, and she asked me what had happened that week in H&H.

She was referring to a picture we had printed of her riding in a parade, but someone in the production team had inadvertently reversed the picture so her legs were on the wrong side of the horse. I was furious despite not receiving a single letter of complaint, but of course The Queen had noticed. I sent her the original, correct, proof in a frame and she was very good about it.

The Queen’s concern for horse welfare has been another major element in her equestrian life. As patron of the British Horse Society The Queen takes considerable interest in its welfare activities.

Welfare was an element in her decision to invite the innovative American trainer Monty Roberts to display his method of introducing unbroken horses to being saddled and ridden in one session. I was among guests invited to Windsor Castle for this demonstration, where The Queen told me she thought his methods were “marvellous”.

“I have seen an awful lot of ropes and straps being used in the old methods of breaking in a horse,” she said – and some home-bred royal horses were later “entered” to riding by Monty.

Apart from a great deal of fun, what else has horsemanship conferred upon the royals? Prince Philip pointed out the character-forming benefits of riding, as originally expressed by the Elizabethan dramatist Ben Jonson: “Princes learn no art truly, but the art of horsemanship. The reason is, the brave beast is no flatterer. He will throw a prince as soon as his groom.”

The “great leveller” was Prince Philip’s perceptive description of the horse. He wrote in an article for Horse & Hound’s 27 May 1977 issue, celebrating the Silver Jubilee: “Having a family which seems to be equally willing to be humiliated by the horse, I have to live with the expectation that they too will suffer injury and indignity.

“The only advantage of the personal experience of this sort of thing is that I am not surprised when it happens to them, and I am full of sympathy and useful advice for treatment and recovery.”

Prince Philip continued to drive a carriage well into his late nineties. Our Queen is still riding as a recreation – long may she continue to do so.

Marking The Queen’s favourite horses in this exclusive article, first published in Horse & Hound on 11 June 2020, Terry Pendry LVO, BEM, stud groom and manager to The Queen at Windsor Castle highlights eight special horses Her Majesty and her family have loved riding and watching, while John Warren, our monarch’s bloodstock and racing adviser, shares five of The Queen’s most memorable racehorses.

It’s almost impossible to name all the horses and ponies that Her Majesty has enjoyed over the decades. You have to bear in mind she breeds racehorses, carriage horses, hunters, sports and riding horses, and also polo ponies when, back in the day, His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh was playing at a very high level.

There are, of course, the rare breeds such as Cleveland Bays for the carriages at Buckingham Palace and her beloved Highland and Fell ponies.

Here, we cover just a few of Her Majesty’s special horses and ponies. It only scratches the surface of all those The Queen has bred. There are so many more that could be spoken of. Her knowledge and expertise is well known. She names all of her horses and ponies herself and can remember the parentage of every single one.

She still enjoys riding to this very day, and it is an important part of her life. Her Majesty has a fountain of knowledge in all things equine, you might say a living encyclopedia.

The Queen’s favourite horses: Betsy

We would have to start with Betsy, a 15.2hh black-brown mare that Her Majesty used to ride in the 1960s. Betsy was full of character and spirit and much enjoyed by The Queen.

Burmese was presented to Her Majesty in 1969 by The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and The Queen rode her in Trooping the Colour for 18 years before the mare retired in 1986 to Windsor. There she enjoyed four years before passing away at the age of 28. Burmese is buried in the grounds of the Home Park private.

The Queen’s favourite horses: Doublet

Princess Anne, as she was then, won the European Eventing Championships at Burghley on Doublet in 1971. Would you believe he was bred to be a polo pony? But he obviously grew and could jump, so became a fine ride for Princess Anne – meaning that The Queen bred both the horse and rider!

The Queen’s favourite horses: Columbus

A few weeks ago, Horse & Hound featured Captain Mark Phillips in its Legends series (21 May). One of the horses mentioned was Columbus, a 17.1hh grey sired by Colonist – who was Winston Churchill’s stallion that stood at Sandringham Stud for a period of time.

Princess Anne first evented Columbus at novice and intermediate level but found him too strong, saying that he was more of a man’s ride. His stable name was The Monster.

Although Columbus was plagued with leg injuries, he won Badminton in 1974 — which made Her Majesty very proud. He also hunted and team chased, and even jumped round the old Grand National course with relish and ease. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother always said he was the Grand National horse that never was. She would have loved him for herself.

The Queen’s favourite horses: Sanction

This brown riding horse was a firm favourite for many years. The photograph was our Golden Jubilee picture with a beautiful acer tree with its golden leaves in the background.

Sanction, this issue’s cover star, was almost telepathic and had a very strong bond with Her Majesty and would almost know what The Queen wanted and in which direction she would like to go before instructed to do so.

He sadly passed away in the autumn of that same year, 2002, at the age of 24. He is also buried in the grounds of the Home Park private. Sanction was the last home-bred horse that Her Majesty rode before making the decision to start riding native ponies. A little nearer to the ground, so to speak.

The Queen’s favourite horses: Balmoral Jingle and Balmoral Curlew

Two beautiful Highland ponies made for a most natural choice. Balmoral Jingle and Balmoral Curlew were shown by Lizzie Briant before joining The Royal Mews at Windsor. Both ponies were a huge success in the show ring and eventually went on to become broodmares at the Balmoral Stud.

The Queen’s favourite horses: Emma

From Highlands to Fells. This lovely picture is of Fell pony Emma. Again produced in the show ring by Lizzie Briant, Emma has been a wonderful servant to Her Majesty and is still going strong at the age of 24 as one of The Queen’s riding ponies.

The Fell Pony Society came to honour The Queen’s 90th birthday and said they would like to bring 90 ponies. They came with 120! They lined the red route of the castle for Her Majesty, who sat on His Royal Highness’ driving Fell pony team followed by Emma. It truly was a wonderful day.

The racehorses

Perhaps to know why Her Majesty is fascinated with breeding thoroughbreds, it is important to understand how complex it is to mate, rear, train and ride a racehorse.

Her Majesty has developed a deep, profound knowledge, which she has consistently worked on and thought about throughout most of her life. It takes the same sort precise expertise as a watchmaker to produce a somewhat fragile racehorse to perform on the big occasions and indeed any occasion at all – especially when they are expected to race at speeds of up to 40mph.

These incredible highly charged creatures, full of blood and muscle, are developed from birth with kid gloves, and the sophisticated jigsaw of trying to put all the pieces together is a constant challenge that continues to intrigue The Queen. To deal with the constant challenges and disappointments, as all horse people will know, the greatest asset you need to have with horses is patience – which luckily The Queen has in spades.

The colt was bred by King George VI and was the first horse The Queen inherited from her late father. Aureole was a very high-class racehorse – winning seven races, including the Acomb Stakes, Derby Trial, Cumberland Lodge, Coronation Cup, Hardwick and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot; he also finished second in the Epsom Derby.

Aureole’s feisty, highly strung temperament made owning him all the more intriguing as The Queen understood early on what it took to encourage the best out of this brilliant home-bred.

Her Majesty has chosen Aureole as one of her most memorable horses as in addition to him becoming The Queen’s first top-class exciting racehorse, Aureole stood at Sandringham Stud throughout his whole career as a stallion, where he sired many top-class horses until his retirement at the age of 24.

He was the first top-class horse bred by The Queen in her own right. He was winner of the Granville Stakes, the 2000 Guineas Trial, Derby Trial, Cumberland Lodge, Limekiln Stakes, the John Porter and Ormonde Stakes. He was also placed in the Gold Cup, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Dewhurst, New Ham and the Winston Churchill Stakes.

Her Majesty’s sharp eye noticed when she was shown the colt by a different stallion by her trainer (Captain Boyd-Rochfort at his stables at Freemason Lodge in Newmarket), and questioned whether it was in fact Doutelle. It seemed that two of Her Majesty’s colts had inadvertently been confused since the time she had seen them as foals. As neither horse had run, there was no serious problem, but there could have been if The Queen had not been so observant and remembered them so well as foals.

Doutelle also retired to The Queen’s Sandringham Stud where his career as a stallion was tragically cut all too short, dying at the age of only eight. Among his best offspring were Pretendre (winner of the Dewhurst), Canisbay (the Queen’s Eclipse Stakes winner) and importantly the Nell Gwyn and Oaks Trial winner Amicable, who became one of the Royal Stud’s foundation broodmares.

A dual Classic winner when winning both the 1000 Guineas and Prix de Diane, Highclere was also second in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Ascot.

Trained at West Ilsley by Major Dick Hern, Highclere showed smart form as a two-year-old, and The Queen’s Racing Manager, Lord Porchester (later The Earl of Carnarvon) proposed to Her Majesty that the talented filly wore blinkers to help her concentrate when running in the 1000 Guineas. The trick worked and having won the Guineas, with the collective knowledge of the owner, trainer and manager, they decided that with Highclere’s style of racing and taking her pedigree into account, the Prix de Diane (often referred to as the French Oaks) run over 10 furlongs was a more suitable distance rather than the 12 furlongs of the Epsom Oaks.

Their decision proved to be correct as Highclere won decisively – not only in front of her owner/breeder, trainer, racing and stud managers but also in front of an enormous delighted Parisian crowd, who famously chanted “Vive La Reine”. Highclere went on to become an outstanding broodmare.

This great granddaughter of The Queen’s superb broodmare Amicable was trained at West Ilsley by The Earl of Huntingdon. Her Majesty chose this daughter of the exciting American imported stallion Machiavellian because besides being a very good race mare, she has been a huge asset to the success of The Queen’s current broodmare band.

Winner of the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot, St. Simon and Geoffrey Freer Stakes, Phantom Gold went on to produce daughters such as Flight of Fancy (who ran second in the Epsom Oaks), Golden Stream (Stakes winner), Hypotenuse, Well Hidden and Daring Aim – all the dams of stakes winners.

This remarkable mare will inevitably continue to be at the core of the Royal Studs’ broodmare band for future generations to enjoy and nurture.

His Highness The Aga Khan kindly loaned The Queen a number of his broodmares to celebrate Her Majesty’s 80th birthday.

Each summer, The Queen and I strategise the mating plans for the following stud season. As Her Majesty follows racing so closely, various stallions inevitably catch The Queen’s eye, and as Monsun was proving to be one of the best stallions at stud in Germany, we decided that if The Queen could breed a filly by him, it would be tremendous to introduce some outcross blood into the stud.

A beautiful bay filly was duly born, and in the hands of her patient trainer Sir Michael Stoute at Freemason Lodge in Newmarket, went on to make history. Having won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot as a three-year-old, Estimate went on to win the Sagaro Stakes, before brilliantly winning the Ascot Gold Cup at the Royal meeting as a four-year-old.

No reigning monarch had won the Gold Cup and it gave Her Majesty great pleasure in achieving an ambition to breed such a great horse of true stamina and grit.

Estimate went on as a five-year-old to win the Doncaster Cup and run second in the Lonsdale Cup. She now resides at the Royal Studs where her offspring are beginning to look very exciting for the future.

The world mourns: Queen Elizabeth II dies aged 96

Heartfelt tributes are pouring in from across the world as The Queen has died at the age of 96.

Buckingham Palace announced today (8 September) that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had died peacefully at Balmoral, surrounded by her family. The palace had released a statement earlier this afternoon to say The Queen’s doctors were concerned about her health, since which members of her family had been travelling to be with her.

A statement from the palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Horses were one of The Queen’s biggest loves throughout her life; she had her first lesson aged three, and her first pony, a Shetland called Peggy, was given to her by her grandfather King George V on her fourth birthday.

Since then, Her Majesty had owned and bred countless horses and ponies, from the hundreds of winning racehorses, some of whom went on also to enjoy showing success, to carriage horses, hunters, sport horses and polo ponies. One of those she bred was Doublet, with whom Princess Anne won individual European Eventing Championships gold in 1971, leading Her Majesty to joke that she had bred both horse and rider.

Pictures of The Queen riding out in Windsor Great Park on an immaculate Fell, headscarf in place, have always been a common sight, and there were reports this spring that she had returned to the saddle following a break.

In a statement, The King said: “The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

Rest in peace, Your Majesty.

The Queen – a happy and glorious life (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022)

There is scarcely a facet of the equestrian world that has not benefited from the patronage – either personal or official – of Her Majesty The Queen. Horse & Hound acknowledges the influence of this great equestrian

THROUGH her happy accident of birth, Queen Elizabeth II had access to horses beyond the dreams of most of her subjects. But she turned it to the equestrian world’s advantage through her genuine love of horses and inestimable knowledge and expertise. Without her involvement and wise counsel, it is arguable that sports such as polo, eventing and driving trials would not have flourished as they did. Throughout her 70-year reign, it was duty first, family second and horses a very close third.

A passion for racing

HOWEVER much The Queen was involved in other aspects of horse sport, racing drove her equestrian interests. Not surprisingly, when British racing introduced the QIPCO Hall of Fame in 2021, she was one of its first inductees.

As a child, The Queen relished visiting Sandringham and Wolferton, the second of the Royal Studs, both in Norfolk, later attending race meetings at the “family” track, Ascot.

Her first big-race adrenaline rush most likely came in 1946, when the King’s Hyperion daughter Hypericum won the 1000 Guineas – after decanting jockey Doug Smith at the start.

The Queen went on to own around 1,600 winners. A fellow equestrian, US President Reagan once gifted a computer which he had programmed to track her racehorses’ activities. He did not know that the royal household already conveyed the outcome of every single run instantly to The Queen, wherever she was in the world.

As a breeder, her encyclopedic knowledge of pedigrees equipped her to maintain the Royal Studs’ role in the evolution of the thoroughbred, and the first decade of her reign was particularly glorious, partly thanks to the great foundation mare Feola. In coronation year, Feola’s grandson Aureole was Derby runner-up. In 1954, he won the Coronation Cup, Hardwicke Stakes and the King George, making the young monarch leading owner of the year – a feat she repeated in 1957.

Almeria was the best-staying filly in 1957, and Pall Mall won the 2000 Guineas in 1958. Other high-class winners were High Veldt, Above Suspicion and Doutelle, while other descendants of Feola – notably world-record money-winner Round Table – impressed elsewhere.

In the 1960s, the royal studs went through a weak patch following the retirement of The Queen’s adviser Captain Charles Moore. Sir Michael Oswald was recruited to run the studs (succeeded by Joe Grimwade), and later looking after her jumping interests until his death in 2021.

The post of racing manager was created for The Queen’s childhood friend Henry, the 7th Earl of Carnarvon. Faster blood was imported and links forged with Kentucky. Another golden era followed in the ’70s, with Highclere winning the 1000 Guineas and Prix de Diane. That great battler Dunfermline took the Oaks under Willie Carson in 1977, The Queen’s silver jubilee year. She also stood the top-class sire Bustino, plus Shirley Heights, first of only two winners in the entire history of the Derby also to be a son and sire of Derby winners (Mill Reef and Slip Anchor).

In the past 40 years, uber-wealthy Arab and Irish owners have dominated the sport. Like other pillars of British racing, The Queen struggled to retain key pedigrees; despite her personal wealth, she insisted that her equine interests ran on a strictly commercial basis.

In 1982, she arguably changed the course of British breeding by selling the filly Height Of Fashion – by Bustino out of Highclere – to Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum. The rumoured price of £1m was earmarked to secure the West Ilsley stables for their tenant Major Dick Hern, The Queen’s principal trainer since 1966. One can only guess her private thoughts when Height Of Fashion went on to produce seven big winners including the legendary Nashwan, the only horse ever to win the 2000 Guineas, Derby, Eclipse and King George in the same season. Nashwan was syndicated to stud for £18m (about £70m in today’s money).

In 2008, The Queen enjoyed her first Royal Ascot winner since 1999, Free Agent in the Chesham Stakes and in 2013 became the first reigning monarch to win the Ascot Gold Cup, with the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Estimate. The following year’s Gold Cup provided The Queen with a less appealing and very expensive experience – Estimate tested positive to morphine after finishing second. Hers and other horses’ samples were attributed to feed contamination – but it still meant disqualification from the race.

Lord Carnavon’s son-in-law John Warren became The Queen’s next racing adviser and, despite the difficult market, restored missing links in her breeding programme.

Her great-grandfather King Edward VII won the Derby three times, but this one Classic eluded her. Darley-bred Carlton House provided another chance in 2011. The favourite survived an injury scare earlier in Epsom week, but found French contender Pour Moi too good, finishing third.

Platinum Jubilee year 2022 was expected to provide another shot. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, The Queen’s Reach For The Moon was among the ante-post favourites for the 2022 Derby over the winter, but had a setback which meant he was not fit in time. This son of Sea The Stars won the 2021 Group Three Solario Stakes at Sandown and capped The Queen’s best Flat season since 1988 – 33 winners in all.

Tactical was another Group winner in recent years, though world events prevented The Queen from enjoying all his successes in person. Tactical landed the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot 2020, but The Queen stayed away for the first time in 73 years because of the Covid pandemic. Home-bred Tactical also won at the 2021 April meeting in Newmarket – a few days after her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, died.

A purely practical decision was made to hand King George VI’s Flat-racing interests to the new Queen and his jumpers to The Queen Mother after his death, fostering a widespread assumption that The Queen was disinterested in National Hunt. This was far from the truth; the first horse to run in her colours was in fact a jumper, Monaveen, in 1949. She was present in 1956 when The Queen Mother’s Devon Loch infamously capsized yards from the Grand National winning post when in the lead.

Barbers Shop won or was placed 15 times and finished seventh in The Queen’s first attempt at the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2009, having the misfortune to run in the same era as Denman and Kauto Star. But she had to wait until a few days short of her 93rd birthday to enjoy a first-ever win at Cheltenham – Sunshade in a (non-Festival meeting) Listed hurdle.

Not just a museum

THE Royal Mews – home of all the non-military ceremonial horses – was founded at Buckingham Palace in 1762. It houses priceless state coaches, but through her enlightened appointment of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Miller, MC, as Crown Equerry in 1961, The Queen ensured it would never be “just a museum”.

For 26 years until his retirement, Sir John – an Olympic-shortlisted event rider – balanced tradition and pageantry with modern horse management techniques. He opened the Mews to London-based user groups such as the Civil Service Riding Club and Riding for the Disabled.

He also navigated members of the royal family through their personal interests – notably Prince Philip in carriage driving and the Prince of Wales in hunting and race- riding.

“If someone invents something new with a horse, you name it, The Queen will try it,” Sir John once said. Having witnessed the high jinks of racehorse Hypericum, The Queen called in neurologist Dr Charles Brook when sibling Aureole showed the same waywardness. He spent long and productive periods running his hands over the back and withers.

Thereafter, The Queen had a lifelong interest in “alternative” practices. In the 1980s, she invited Monty Roberts to demonstrate “join-up” to Royal Mews’ staff and encouraged Sir John to coordinate Monty’s first UK tour in conjunction with Horse&Hound. Monty was made an honorary member of the Royal Victorian Order (RVO) in the birthday honours of 2011.

The Queen also took advantage of official gifts from other heads of state – such as Caspian and Haflinger ponies; one of her favourite hacks was Zaman, a small Russian stallion presented to Prince Charles by Mr Kruschev, the future Soviet premier, in 1956.

But she also loved to bag a bargain. Sir John once found a brilliant polo pony for £250, bought from a butcher and stabled in a rail coach.

Ahead of her time, The Queen recognised the significance of organised sport horse breeding in continental Europe. She dispatched Sir John to source Oldenburgers in Germany for the “Windsor grey” carriage teams in the early 1970s.

However, the “core” carriage horse was the Cleveland Bay. The Queen saved the breed’s most influential sire Mulgrave Supreme for the nation, buying him in 1962 to prevent an export sale. Cleveland Bay-crosses were used by Prince Philip for the “new” sport of horse-driving trials, for which he won a world team gold medal in 1980.

The Queen particularly appreciated numerous equine gifts from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, notably Centenial and Burmese, whom she rode side-saddle at her annual birthday parade, Trooping the Colour, for 18 years.

In 1981, an anti-royalist in the crowd fired six blanks, and the world had a rare glimpse of The Queen’s equestrian prowess as she steadied Burmese in the ensuing panic. Burmese was honoured in a statue in Saskatchewan, Canada, and retired in 1986. Thereafter The Queen rode in a carriage at public parades. She continued to hack out daily, albeit on the safer conveyance of a Fell pony in her advancing years.

The sport of princes

IF racing is the sport of kings, polo is the sport of princes – The Queen’s husband, elder son and grandsons all immersed themselves as players, while The Queen promoted the sport through patronage of Guards Polo Club at Smith’s Lawn, Windsor. She also replenished the post-war drought of high-goal polo ponies through sourcing breeding stock from the Argentine.

As an officer’s wife in Malta from 1949–51, The Queen watched Prince Philip play polo with his uncle Earl Mounbatten, who became mentor to Prince Charles until murdered by the IRA in 1979.

Major Ronald Ferguson later became Prince Charles’s polo manager. In that era, Guards was both the epitome of sporting prowess and a magnet for paparazzi.

Elsewhere on the estate, the annual Royal Windsor Horse Show has no more enthusiastic spectator than The Queen, who attended it daily throughout her life. The show was founded in 1943 by her father, King George VI, as a wartime benefit event.

The Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose – taught to ride and drive by Horace Smith and his daughter Sybil – first won Windsor’s private turnout in 1944 with their pony Hans. Subsequent generations all competed at Windsor. The show’s earliest schedules reflected the royal family’s interests, notably with the introduction of the international carriage-driving grand prix. Windsor went on to host the annual National Driving Championships and the 1984 Worlds, in which Prince Philip won a team bronze medal for Britain.

The passion for driving passed to Prince Edward’s family. Prince Philip taught Edward’s wife, Countess of Wessex, to drive and later their daughter Lady Louise Windsor; in 2017, aged 13, she made her Royal Windsor debut, with the French pony chase driven by The Queen at Windsor in 1943.

Natives get royal seal of approval

THE QUEEN was a notable breeder and exhibitor of native ponies. Fells were bred at Balmoral initially for deer-stalking, though later were driven competitively by Prince Philip. Highland ponies were a family tradition. Although official engagements invariably prevented The Queen from attending the Royal Highland Show, her stock was usually in the ribbons. In 2007, The Queen expanded her Highland interests, moving eight mares from Hampton Court to Balmoral. By 2010, that herd numbered 35, with the yearling Balmoral Mandarin reserve champion at the Royal Highland Show.

In 2017, The Queen lost five of the Balmoral Highlands to grass sickness, but has turned sadness into a positive by promoting research into this illness ever since.

In 2004, recognising that Royal Windsor had to move with the more professional demands of sport horse producers, show director Simon Brooks-Ward obtained The Queen’s permission to relocate it to her private Frogmore gardens in 2004, building all-weather arenas. The new facility hosted the dual showjumping and dressage European Championships in 2009, finally joining five-star showjumping ranks in 2017, with increased involvement of Rolex, and attracting the world’s very best after an absence of several decades.

The new-look Royal Windsor also included an evening tattoo, born out of the 2002 Golden Jubilee pageant, All The Queen’s Horses.

Another such pageant marked The Queen’s 90th birthday. Only at Royal Windsor could superstars Kylie Minogue, Shirley Bassey and Helen Mirren all appear on the bill – and all be upstaged by a horse.

The Queen never missed a beat of that performance. Noticing the riding of Kinvara Garner, who portrayed the young Elizabeth, she approached her about riding her part-bred Arabian Whalton Highwayman (Fred). Five successful seasons followed, culminating with Fred’s retirement after landing the Royal Windsor championship in 2021.

Gold medals – so near and yet so far

IT was fortuitous that the Master of the Horse (a senior role in the Royal Household) was the 10th Duke of Beaufort, who founded Badminton Horse Trials in 1949. The Queen annually attended up to the mid 1980s, Princess Anne’s success enhancing her interest. The Queen also hosted the second-ever European Eventing Championships at Windsor Great Park in 1955.

As an owner, The Queen came close to Olympic glory in 1956 at Stockholm, with Bertie Hill’s ride, Countryman III. Hill was in contention after the dressage, but the bank around a trakehner was weakened by an overnight deluge and Countryman became straddled when it collapsed under him. Hill dismounted to help, accruing 80 penalties, while The Queen waited anxiously for news in the “D box”. Once freed, the pair galloped home inside the time!

Princess Anne’s first serious eventer, Purple Star, was bred by Sir John Miller out of his Badminton-ride Stella, but it was The Queen’s polo-bred Doublet who took her to European gold. Princess Anne and her daughter Zara Tindall completed a unique family double, both winning European individual gold. Princess Anne won a further European individual silver with The Queen’s Goodwill in 1975, boosting eventing’s media profile even further.

The Queen experienced every mother’s nightmare when Goodwill and Princess Anne survived crashing falls at the 1973 Europeans in Kiev – at the notorious second fence which claimed 35 victims – and the Montreal Olympics in 1976.

The Queen had a second gold medal near miss with Columbus. The grey known as “The Monster” was too strong for Princess Anne so she offered him to Mark Phillips, on the cusp of their romance in 1972. By 1974, Mark was The Queen’s son-in-law; when she presented him with Badminton’s Whitbread Trophy he promptly handed it back to her, as the winning owner. Sadly, that Badminton victory was Columbus’s swansong at top level; that autumn, he slipped a tendon when leading the World Championship cross-country.

Elite event horse breeding had become a more specialised undertaking by the time The Queen’s granddaughter was competing seriously. None of Zara’s greatest achievements came with horses provided by her grandmother, though Zara did compete with Tiger Lily, the result of experiments in breeding coloureds out of The Queen’s Tinkerbell. Tinkerbell’s little family appeared in official pictures to mark the Golden Jubilee in 2002 and The Queen’s 78th birthday in 2004.

Tiger Lily’s son Sunbeam is one of many show horses produced for The Queen by Katie-Jerram Hunnable, though none perhaps as well recognised as Barbers Shop. In the second decade of the millennium, he dominated the fast growing raft of showing classes for retrained racehorses. His many championships included the RoR Tattersalls series final at Hickstead, and three Royal Windsors.

Naturally, The Queen was present for Barbers Shop’s farewell at Windsor, where the world’s press recorded her clear delight at winning a Tesco voucher.

The Queen was the most famous, admired and garlanded person on the planet, but nothing brought out her widest smile than the simple pleasure of owning a horse.

3.40pm: King’s Lynn (pictured) in the King’s Stand Stakes (Group One)

The winner of last month’s Group Two Temple Stakes at Haydock is seeking a maiden win at the top level. The five-year-old by Cable Bay is trained by Andrew Balding and will be ridden by David Probert.

Wednesday 15 June

3.05pm: Perfect Alibi in the Queen’s Vase (Group Two)

A relatively inexperienced three-year-old with just three runs under her belt. The daughter of Le Havre is trained by William Haggas and will be ridden by Tom Marquand.

Thursday 16 June

5pm: Saga in the Britannia Stakes (Handicap)

This grey three-year-old colt by Invincible Spirit has one victory to his name from five runs so far. He is trained by John and Thady Gosden and will be ridden by Frankie Dettori.

5.35pm: Reach For The Moon in the Hampton Court Stakes (Group Three)

By Sea The Stars, this is another Royal Ascot contender that is trained by John and Thady Gosden and will be ridden by Frankie Dettori. He has never been out of the top two in all six of his starts so far.

6pm: Tactical in the Buckingham Palace Stakes (Handicap)

This four-year-old by Toronado has run 13 times so far and has won three of those races. He is trained by Andrew Balding and will be ridden by Ryan Moore.

Friday 17 June

3.40pm: Just Fine in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap)

Another by By Sea The Stars, this four-year-old, trained by Sir Michael Stoute has won two of his nine starts.

5pm: Discretion in the Sandringham Stakes (Handicap)

This three-year-old filly by Dubai has a 50% strike rate so far, winning two of her four races to-date. She has won her latest two starts and is trained by Harry and Roger Charlton.

6.10pm: Spring Is Sprung in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes (Handicap)

This three-year-old by Oasis Dream has been gelded since his last start when he finished third of six starters in February. Trained by Michael Bell, he has won two of his five starts so far.

‘I was always meant to meet him’: how retraining The Queen’s former racehorse changed a rider’s life

Rider Louise Robson has shared how one of The Queen’s former racehorses changed her life.

Louise, founder of Thoroughbred Dressage, specialises in retraining racehorses for the dressage arena.

“My journey retraining for Her Majesty The Queen started when I was 15 years old. Then, I wasn’t retraining for her, I was a teenager, a girl, from the countryside who just so happened to have one of the biggest strokes of luck,” she said, in the above video by Great British Racing.

“I fell in love with ex-racehorses, primarily through my very first ex-racehorse that we had from Her Majesty The Queen, which was Mister Glum. He changed my world. He absolutely changed everything. He was there with me through my GCSEs, A-levels, university, and then after university we packed our bags and went off to Germany and trained with one of the best dressage riders in the world.”

She said that she came home and built Thoroughbred Dressage because of “Glum”.

“The stars aligned and I was always meant to meet Glum,” said Louise. “At the time I had lost all my confidence. I used to have panic attacks when I went near horses. Glum changed that for me and he made everything better and I wanted to ride. I’ve always wanted to ride, but I was afraid.”

Louise has had a number of Her Majesty’s horses. Quadrille, Forth Bridge and Prince’s Trust are among those in her charge who will form part of the parade at the Cazoo Derby at Epsom on Saturday (4 June).

“The connection I now have with Her Majesty The Queen is I don’t have her phone number, but she does ask after them and I send regular updates,” she said, adding that the horses’ happiness and soundness are Her Majesty’s top priorities as an owner.

“Whenever we see Her Majesty, she can tell me stories about all the horses here, all the horses we’ve had, from a foal all the way through their years.”

As the world prepares to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this week to mark Her Majesty’s 70 years of outstanding service to her country, here we round up some Platinum Jubilee equestrian events that you might like to attend.

Trooping the Colour (The Queen’s Birthday Parade)

Horse Guard’s Parade, London

Thursday 2 June

One of the key Platinum Jubilee equestrian events, The Queen’s Birthday Parade, will start at 11am. The colour will be trooped by the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards, and more than 1,200 officers and soldiers from the Household Division will put on a display of military pageantry on Horse Guards Parade, together with hundreds of Army musicians and around 240 horses. This annual event has marked the official birthday of the British Sovereign for over 260 years. A Royal Gun Salute will be fired during The Queen’s Birthday Parade.

Tickets for seated viewing of Trooping at Horse Guards Parade are now sold out, but there is an opportunity for people to view the display as the troops parade to and from Horse Guards Parade as it passes on its journey between Buckingham Palace and the parade ground.

During the ceremony, there will be an opportunity to watch the event via large screens, set up in St James’ Park and many more members of the public will be able to watch the spectacle live on BBC and Sky television, both in the UK and overseas. Once the parade has ended and the Royal Procession has returned to Buckingham Palace, the Royal Family’s balcony appearance will happen, which will coincide with a flypast of various aircraft.

Jubilee Pageant

Sunday 5 June

The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery will also play a large part in the Jubilee Pageant, making it another of the Platinum Jubilee equestrian events to look out for.

The Gold State Carriage, led by The Sovereign’s Escort, will lead the Platinum Jubilee Pageant and will culminate with the singing of the National Anthem and a gospel choir to the sounds of the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines.

The Pageant will bring to life iconic moments from The Queen’s reign as well as showcasing our changing society over the past 70 years. 10,000 people are involved, including the military, over 6,000 volunteers, performers, key workers and 2,500 members of the general public.

National treasures and iconic figures from music, film, sport and the arts will take part in the Pageant, including much-loved celebrity names, alongside military personnel, key workers and volunteers.

The Derby

The Derby is taking place at Epsom Downs Racecourse on 4 June, while millions will be tuning in from around the world to watch the Derby at Epsom on TV and online. It’s currently unclear whether Her Majesty will be attending in person, but the racing will be red hot with plenty of pomp and ceremony on display to help mark the occasion.

Hooves and Horses

The Royal Mews, Buckingham Palace, London

Saturday 11 June

Join the team at the Royal Mews between 11am and 3pm to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with arts and crafts activities for the whole family. You can also join one of the family tours to discover the hidden stories of the coaches and horses which call the Mews home, sit in a landau, dress up in livery and have a go at tacking up our little wooden pony ready for a procession.

The Kees-Gert Friesian Memorial Ride

This promises to be a spectacular display of 26 Friesian horses parading along the Golden Mile to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, starting at 2pm.

Celebrating The Queen’s love of horses: Her Majesty’s retrained racing stars to parade at Epsom

Some of The Queen’s former racehorses will parade at Epsom on Cazoo Derby day (4 June) in honour of Her Majesty’s contribution to the sport.

The Queen is expected to attend Derby Day in person as part of the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations and a guard of honour of 40 jockeys, dressed in her famous colours, will greet her arrival.

Retraining of Racehorses has worked with the Jockey Club to arrange for five of Her Majesty’s retired racehorses will parade on the day, headed by Barbers Shop.

“We know The Queen is incredibly fond of all of her horses, whether they are racing or involved in other disciplines,” said Phil White, London regional director at the Jockey Club.

“This will be a great way to combine her passion for the thoroughbred with a chance to educate people about the work RoR does, and the lives racehorses live once their careers on the track have come to an end.”

Barbers Shop, now 20, was bred by Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, and won eight times for trainer Nicky Henderson. His accolades on the track included a listed chase win and placings in the King George VI and the Hennessy Gold Cup. He won multiple championship titles in his second career in the show ring with Katie Jerram-Hunnable, including Royal Windsor and Hickstead, before retiring from competition in 2018.

He will be joined by the five-year-old First Receiver, who is also based with Katie and enjoying his new career in the show ring. The New Approach gelding, bred by The Queen, was last seen on a racecourse at Royal Ascot 2020, when he finished second to Russian Emperor in the Hampton Court Stakes.

Three dressage converts also feature in the parade. Louise Robson is bringing Quadrille, who was also a runner-up in the Hampton Court Stakes and is now competing at prix st georges level, as well as Prince’s Trust and Forth Bridge.

RoR chief executive Di Arbuthnot said it is an “honour” for the charity and riders taking part to be involved in what they “hope will be a memorable day for Her Majesty”.

“I have seen at first hand the pleasure The Queen gets from seeing her former racehorses excel in a different discipline and the role her horses have played in helping promote the work of Retraining of Racehorses is immeasurable,” she added.

‘70 years of fabulous reign’: rocking horse replica of Barbers Shop presented to The Queen

The Queen has been presented with a rocking horse replica of Barbers Shop to mark her Platinum Jubilee – with the former racehorse turned showing champion in attendance to mark the occasion.

Stevenson Brothers Rocking Horses presented Her Majesty with the rocking horse in a private ceremony at the Royal Mews. The rocking horse is the sixth to be commissioned for The Queen in 20 years.

“For every jubilee we create a horse to commemorate the occasion,” said Marc Stevenson, who runs the business with his twin brother Tony and business partner Sue Russell.

“The first one was a dappled grey horse on a coach spring, and the next was a black horse for the Diamond Jubilee, which we called Churchill’s Charger. It is tacked up in 4th Hussars tacks and the idea was to remind Her Majesty of her first prime minister. Inside a bottom drawer there are pictures of The Queen and Churchill in black and white printed from the original negatives and in the glass base there is little lead figures of Churchill riding his horse, him in the Boer War and him as prime minister.

“We like to do something a bit special. For the Platinum Jubilee it was suggested that we make a replica of the last racehorse that Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother bred, Barbers Shop. We changed the shape of the rocking horse so it’s as if he’s moving rather than a rocking horse with stationary legs. It’s more like a sculpture and is the first we’ve done like this.”

Barbers Shop had a successful racing career trained by Nicky Henderson before turning his hooves to showing with producer Katie Jerram-Hunnable. His many achievements in the show ring include being crowned supreme ridden champion at Royal Windsor in 2017. He retired in 2018 and remains based with Katie.

“The Queen was extremely happy to see her latest rocking horse. The real joy was having Barbers Shop present at the presentation. Her Majesty commented that it must have been nice to have the real horse to base the rocking horse on,” said Marc.

“We wish Her Majesty many congratulations on her 70 years of fabulous reign. It’s been a joy making rocking horses for her for the past 20 years and a real honour. It was lovely to see her looking so well and joyous.”
