‘Every day is a win’: tiny pony dumped to die has ‘light back in her eyes’ as she takes small steps towards recovery

A tiny pony dumped emaciated, alone and “utterly exhausted” has “light back in her eyes” as she continues to make progress towards health, her rescuers said.

H&H reported last month on Annie, a young 11.2hh mare who had been rescued from a field in Basingstoke by World Horse Welfare and taken to The Horse Trust.

The coloured mare was “fighting for survival” in the days after her rescue, the charity said at the time. She was very underweight, with a significant lice infestation and skin issues, and needed round-the-clock veterinary care.

“In my many years at The Horse Trust I have never seen such an utterly exhausted pony arrive into our care,” charity chief executive Jeanette Allen told H&H.

“Annie has taken full hold of our hearts and every day she is with us feels like a win. She’s still very frail but the light is back in her eyes and we will continue to do all we can to give her the best possible chance at a happy, healthy life.”

A spokesperson for the charity told H&H Annie has tested negative for strangles and has managed to get up unassisted a couple of times. She is still very underweight and suffering from the lice infestation and skin issues, which are being treated.

“Recent care has included clipping and medicated bathing to treat sores and improve her comfort,” the spokesperson said. “While she appeared to enjoy this, it also highlighted just how fragile she still is.”

The spokesperson said the team is hugely grateful for the response of the public to Annie’s plight; over £20,000 has so far been raised towards her care.

“Although she still has a long way to go, her recovery is moving in a positive direction and the team are encouraged by her progress,” she added.

“We are so grateful for the thousands of people who have taken Annie into their hearts as well and are supporting her extremely tough journey,” Ms Allen said.

‘She’d give you heaven and earth’: brave police horse who famously wore sunglasses clocks off after her final shift

A police horse who wowed crowds and won hearts when sporting a fabulous pair of designer sunglasses at Royal Ascot – and who served with “unmatched bravery, professionalism, and heart” for 12 years – has clocked off from her final shift.

Police Horse Luna arrived at The Horse Trust on Tuesday (31 March) to enjoy her well-earned retirement with a herd including her former Thames Valley Police (TVP) colleague Atlas.

Luna’s rider Heidi Cornick of the TVP mounted branch went to the charity’s Buckinghamshire base to see her partner settle in, which she told H&H was an emotional occasion

“She was honestly my best friend at work,” she said. “You know they’re going to be happy, and she already was by the time we left, but I’ve walked past her stable since and it’s empty. They deserve a proper retirement but you miss them.”

Police Horse Luna, a 17-year-old Normandy cob, became Sergeant Cornick’s partner when the latter joined the TVP mounted branch some two and a half years ago.

“She was very much one of the horses newer people started on, because she’s very kind and would look after you but also you had to work hard, you had to ask her nicely to do things, because if she didn’t want to do it, she would tell you,” Sergeant Cornick said.

“I remember riding her round Portsmouth once, and she – I say, pretended because it was very much a pretence – pretended she was scared of public benches. I was saying ‘Luna, you’ve walked past no less than a million public benches in your career’. And she was ‘Not today, Heidi, nope’. She’d keep us on our toes, but genuinely always looked after her rider. She was so kind and honest.”

Sergeant Cornick said Heidi excelled in all areas of her career; she was steadfast in high-pressure situations including the violence that broke out before a Legia Warsaw v Aston Villa football match in 2023 and was part of state visits and occasions including The late Queen’s final journey and escorting the Royal Family at Royal Ascot every year.

“The horses are involved in three main things. They do community box patrols, because the horses have this phenomenal ability to go into any community and break down barriers and have positive interactions. She was wonderful for those; my little girl ended up loving Luna because she would be so kind, so soft and gentle with children.

“Luna was just so good with the children, so she used to do all our school talks and community engagement, but equally, she’d do all our higher-risk events where she kept the public safe.”

Sergeant Cornick said the relationship between police horse and officer, especially in high-pressure situations, is best described as “extreme trust”.

“I’m asking her, in sometimes quite scary situations, to go forward to keep the public safe,” she said. “She knows I’m going to look after her and equally, I know she’s going to look after me. And that sort of trust and relationship, which we spend time building, is so important because it’s what looks after you and gets both of us home safe at the end of the day.”

Luna hit headlines last year when she was photographed wearing her special sunglasses to protect her eyes as she had equine recurrent uveitis. Sergeant Cornick said people came to ask about them every day.

“We used to call them her special Neigh-Bans and people loved that,” she said. “Whenever she wore them, people came up; they were one of those extra things that broke down barriers.

“Even in quite high-risk public order situations, if you ask someone to do something while you’re on a horse, they do it. So as police, we have to use an awful lot less force when we’re on horseback because people actually comply with what we’re asking them to do. They probably seem quite an antiquated policing technique but they’re so relevant in today’s world.”

Sergeant Cornick said the decision was made to remove one of Luna’s eyes owing to the uveitis, and the surgery was carried out in February.

“It sounds silly, because I knew she’d be absolutely fine, and the day after the surgery, she was settled straight away,” Sergeant Cornick said. “It didn’t take her long to recover but I wanted her to go to the Horse Trust feeling 100% so she could be the dominant queen she is, and head of her herd. So I gave her extra long!

“She was very opinioned, always told us what she wanted. She had a heart of gold and was so honest, would do anything you asked but she’d test you. She’d make sure you asked correctly and looked after her but as long as she did, she’d give you heaven and earth. I know there may be another Luna – but I don’t think there will. She’s one of a kind.”

A TVP spokesperson added: “For 12 extraordinary years, Police Horse Luna has served Thames Valley and Hampshire Police with unmatched bravery, professionalism, and heart. As Luna completes her service and enters many happy years of retirement at The Horse Trust she leaves behind a legacy defined by exceptional courage, unwavering dedication, and a rare elegance that set her apart. It has been an honour to work alongside her.”

‘She is still fighting – and so are we’: next hours critical for neglected pony ‘left to die’ in field

An equine charity has said “the coming hours are critical” for a severely neglected and underweight pony who is having urgent veterinary care after she was “left to die” alone in a field.

Annie, an 11.2hh mare thought to be around three or four years old, was taken in by the Horse Trust after she was rescued from a field near Basingstoke by World Horse Welfare. She was found weighing 157kg and had a body score of 0.5 out of five.

“She was identified by colleagues at World Horse Welfare as the thinnest in the herd. Before they could return with police support, she was moved. The team believes she was deliberately dumped nearby to evade investigation,” said a Horse Trust spokesperson.

The spokesperson said Annie, named after the charity’s founder Ann Lindo, is “fighting for her survival”. She has a heavy lice infestation and suspected significant worm burden, and there are “concerns about further gastrointestinal disease”.

“Treating Annie is a delicate balance. Intervening too aggressively could overwhelm her system; moving too slowly could cost her life,” said the spokesperson, adding that the mare is on a 24-hour trickle feeding plan, but shows “very little appetite”.

Horse Trust veterinary director Nicola Housby-Skeggs said Annie is in “very poor condition” – and the team needs to establish whether this is owing to neglect or disease.

“Despite initial concerns, Annie’s first blood tests show she is not in foal. Early indications suggest she may already have had a foal, having likely been kept in a mixed herd with stallions from very early on,” said the spokesperson.

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen added that Annie had “clearly suffered horrific neglect and abandonment” – and was “so covered in lice that she had become severely anaemic”.

“During her first veterinary examination she was so itchy that as the vet ran their hands over her skin, Annie started nuzzling the handler in relief. Even the lightest touch caused clumps of hair to come away,” said Ms Allen.

“What struck us most is just how utterly exhausted she is. She is now somewhere quiet and comfortable with another pony nearby for company, and we are hoping she can finally begin to rest before the life-saving treatments ahead.

“She is in a dangerously bad state, but we are doing everything we can for her. Right now, hope and positivity are playing a very big part in her care.”

Annie remains under “constant supervision” and the Horse Trust team will do “everything in their power” for her, but the charity “estimates a low chance of survival”.

“She is lying down for periods and has already needed help to stand again. At this stage, the team is monitoring her moment by moment, as even small changes could signal rapid deterioration,” said the spokesperson. “The coming hours are critical.”

Jeanne said if Annie does not make it, “she will at least have known care, comfort and kindness”.

“That matters. But we are not there yet. She is still fighting – and so are we,” said Ms Allen.

‘Horses are in good hands’: new research shows post-surgery equine deaths are declining

The number of equine deaths associated with general anaesthesia has declined in the last 20 years, data has shown.

Researchers – who formed the Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Equine Fatalities Community Interest Company (CEPEF CIC) – have published their latest phase of the enquiry, CEPEF4, into general anaesthetic-related horse deaths since the 1990s. The work, published in 2025, involved analysis of data from 47,000 procedures across 93 veterinary practices and hospitals, in 23 countries and four continents.

The aim was to build on the work of the original studies published in 2002 and consider the seven-day outcome for horses following general anaesthesia. Key findings include the fact that the death rate in otherwise healthy horses – those who underwent anaesthesia for an elective procedure rather than for emergency abdominal surgery such as colic or caesarean section – has decreased from 0.9% to 0.6% since CEPEF2 in 2002. Whereas 33% of deaths in these cases previously related to cardiac arrest, this figure has dropped to around 12% in the last 20 years. This decline has been attributed to a change in some of the drugs used, new techniques and improved monitoring in equine general anaesthesia. The new data found that, in those non-colic cases, the main causes of death were fractures occurring during the recovery period (35%) followed by post-anaesthetic colic during the seven-day period (20%).

As expected, mortality in compromised patients was higher but decreased from 7.8% to 4.2% in the last two decades. The main reasons for this are the improvements in perioperative management of colic by both referring vets and the specialised treatment provided in referral hospitals.

Lead researcher Miguel Gozalo-Marcilla of the University of Edinburgh told H&H that even with this reduction in death rate, risks of anaesthetising a horse are still much greater than a dog. For example, horses are more prone to complications owing to their size and the fact of being prey animals, especially in the immediate recovery period after general anaesthesia. When they recover from a general anaesthetic, horses are more at risk of panicking and try to stand, which can lead to fractures. Good management of anaesthesia during the operation, maintaining a healthy blood circulation and respiration will reduce the likelihood of disaster such as post-anaesthetic myopathy which may lead to catastrophic recovery.

“The reduction in deaths is mainly because the drugs and techniques we are now using are safer, vets are better trained in monitoring and stabilising the more compromised patients pre-operatively in an adequate manner, apart from providing better pain management,” said Dr Gozalo-Marcilla.

“We also know more about certain risk factors – a compromised patient with colic, a pregnant mare, a very fat or skinny horse or if the anaesthetic is longer than two hours, all increase the risk of the horse not surviving the seven-day period. We were also able to identify some protective factors too, like giving a little sedation before the recovery phase to reduce the risk of the horse panicking.”

“The results are promising but there are still some unanswered questions; particularly around post-operation recovery, the critical phase. We can let a horse recover on its own, or ropes can be used to support them, but there’s still no evidence as to which is better – and whether we should be ventilating patients. We want to know how we can reduce this 0.6% death rate further.”

Dr Gozalo-Marcilla said the message to owners is that general anaesthesia in horses is very high risk – more so if a horse is unwell going into it – but that “things have improved massively in 20 years”.

“Things have changed for good, we know there have been improvements and when owners send their horses to a referral setting, they are in good hands,” he said.

Horse Trust director of research and policy Jan Rogers told H&H: “The Horse Trust was pleased to be able to fund this study, which drew data from nearly 48,000 cases across the world.

“The results are reassuring, that there are fewer horses lost under general anaesthetic than was shown in a similar study 20 years ago and that good information is available about the causes of the losses that did occur. This means we can continually improve by monitoring and supporting patients better and by careful use of pre-medication and sedation during recovery – all of which can help to lower risk factors and inform clinical decisions and patient safety.”

Army horse who made ‘remarkable recovery’ after he ran loose on London streets to enjoy retirement

A much-loved Household Cavalry horse who made a “remarkable recovery” from injuries he sustained while loose on the streets of London has retired from duty aged 15, in a “shining example of what can be achieved when tradition meets compassion”.

Quaker, one of five horses who broke loose in the capital last April, having been spooked by sudden noise from construction work, had a holiday at The Horse Trust while he recovered from the injuries he sustained. This week, he returned to the Buckinghamshire charity to enjoy his retirement.

“Military working horse Quaker begins his retirement at The Horse Trust sanctuary, marking a new chapter after dramatic footage of him bolting injured through London’s streets captured global attention,” an Army spokesperson said.

“Following expert veterinary treatment and surgery, Quaker is now returning to The Horse Trust to enjoy his retirement.”

The Chilterns charity has been caring for service horses for 139 years, and last year it provided 3,430 “horse turnout days”, for equine police and army recruits.

“Military working animals provide an invaluable service to our military personnel, including a long history in battle, and continuing through key ceremonial roles,” the spokesperson said.

“The Army has a focus on military horse welfare, and The Horse Trust now runs a pioneering respite scheme, where military working horses take ‘short breaks and summer holidays’. These breaks reflect ongoing efforts to enhance military animal welfare, helping with both performance and quality of life for horses.”

Louise Sandher-Jones, minister for veterans and people said there is a commitment to those who serve their country, including “our much-loved service animals”.

“Quaker’s well-deserved retirement comes after a stellar career in the armed forces and after a high-profile bolting incident, which captured the nation’s attention,” she said.

“This partnership with The Horse Trust also shows how the Army looks after its military working horses and will improve animal welfare.”

There are 32 former military horses enjoying their retirement at The Horse Trust, 26 from the Household Cavalry.

The regiment’s commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Matt Woodward said: “The partnership between the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and The Horse Trust is a shining example of what can be achieved when tradition meets compassion.

“This initiative plays a crucial role in supporting long-term physical and psychological welfare, ensuring they return to duty refreshed and well-balanced.”

Charity CEO Jeanette Allen added that The Horse Trust is “committed to providing respite and retirement to horses who have served our nation and our communities”.

“Our close relationship with HCMR is one we are extremely proud of,” she said.

‘He went surrounded by love’: farewell to courageous police horse who served for 12 years

A much-loved police horse who served for 12 years will be remembered for his “courage, service, and spirit” by those who looked after him in retirement.

Sports horse gelding Caton joined Lancashire Constabulary as a five-year-old in 2006. He patrolled his first football match, a premier league game between Blackburn and Manchester United, in 2008 and went on to be involved in a number of high profile parades and events including the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“He was a natural leader, often at the front during large-scale events, and his talent and versatility shone through at open days, where he would jump through fire or perform in musical rides with confidence and flair,” said a Horse Trust spokesperson.

“He was, in every way, a true ambassador for the mounted unit.”

Caton retired to the Horse Trust in 2018, where he settled into a quieter life.

“Caton loved his comforts and could often be found heading back to bed for a nap after breakfast before getting on with his day,” said the spokesperson, adding that he formed a close bond with his companion “Gozza”.

“Their friendship was a constant throughout his retirement, and the pair were a familiar sight grazing or relaxing together in the fields,” said the Horse Trust spokesperson.

In recent months Caton “began to slow down, struggling increasingly with periods of lameness”.

“When it became clear that his comfort could no longer be maintained, the kindest decision was made to let him go peacefully, on a beautiful morning, surrounded by love,” said the spokesperson.

“Caton’s legacy is one of courage, service, and spirit. He served fearlessly, retired with dignity, and left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed by Gozza, our equine care team, and all those who held him in their hearts.

“Rest easy, Caton. Thank you for your service, your companionship, and your character.”

Farewell to ‘truly special’ mare who served in the Household Cavalry for 15 years

A “truly special” mare, who gave 15 years of “exceptional service” to the Household Cavalry and captured hearts on national television – has died following a peaceful retirement, aged 28.

Charisma retired to the Horse Trust in 2016, having been part of the Household Cavalry Life Guards. During her career she took part in all major ceremonial events including a number of The late Queen’s birthday parades and then 2011 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

A Horse Trust spokesperson said Charisma was “a real favourite” in her regiment owing to her calm and gentle temperament. She was also known for her love of jumping, which “she excelled at”.

“Charisma took part in the annual Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment’s training camp where they took part in a variety of activities including cross-country and showjumping, which suited her down to the ground,” she said.

“When she retired to our Home of Rest for Horses, her nature and beautiful looks made her a familiar face in our annual calendar and other photoshoots, including for Remembrance Sunday. She was rarely seen apart from her companion Elizabeth, who was similar to her in both looks and character.

“Charisma was a horse who loved attention and a good scratch on the face. She quickly settled into her slower pace of life, enjoying the company of her herd and the peaceful days of retirement.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said Charisma “lived up to her name”.

“She was a sweet and often funny presence, never more so than when she appeared with me on Good Morning Britain last year. She totally stole the show,” said Jeanette.

“A huge character with so many years of public service behind her, I’ll miss her big, beautiful face always looking out for attention. Sleep tight gorgeous girl.”

The spokesperson said “in recent months Charisma’s age caught up with her.”

“She struggled with poor dentition, which made it difficult for her to maintain her weight, particularly during the winter, and she never fully recovered this year,” she said.

“Coupled with a flare-up of arthritis, it became clear that her comfort could no longer be maintained. It was felt the kindest decision was to let her go peacefully.”

The spokesperson added that Charisma was “a truly special horse”.

“Her sweet nature and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her,” she said.

“Rest easy, Charisma. Thank you for your noble service, your beautiful nature and the joy you brought to us all.”

A touching moment as horses given to The late Queen retire together with fitting ceremony

Two horses given to The late Queen by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have retired together with fitting ceremony to their last, happy home.

George and Elizabeth, from the Royal Mews and the Metropolitan Police respectively, were both officially stood down from service at The Horse Trust’s Horses, hounds and heroes event. The 25-year-old gelding and 17-year-old mare will stay with the charity for life.

“Though they came from the same place, their paths diverged,” a Horse Trust spokesperson said. “George went on to become a trusted royal charger and Elizabeth, initially destined for the same role, instead embarked on a distinguished career with the police.

“In a touching moment, their saddles were removed for the final time – signifying not only the close of their active service but also the beginning of their well-earned retirement in the heart of the Chiltern Hills.”

The Mounties gave George, a cross between a Hanoverian and a thoroughbred, to The late Queen in 2009, to mark 40 years since the gift of Burmese, who Her Majesty rode in Trooping the Colour until 1986.

“George followed in her footsteps as a ceremonial charger and went on to feature in many of the nation’s most significant occasions,” the spokesperson said, adding that George was The King’s charger while he was the Prince of Wales, took part in Trooping the Colour every year and also had a central role in the platinum jubilee celebrations, Her late Majesty’s funeral and The King’s coronation.

“Like Burmese before him – the famous Canadian mare who carried the Queen for 18 consecutive Trooping the Colour parades and famously stood firm during an assassination attempt – George exemplified steadiness and dignity in the face of pageantry and pressure,” the spokesperson said.

“Described by the Royal Mews as a ‘true gentleman… always reliable and bombproof’, George not only took part in countless royal events but also helped train young chargers with his calm, dependable nature. So admired is George that he has even been immortalised – as a rocking horse.”

Elizabeth, also known as ER and Lizzie, is a 17-year-old Hanoverian who was given to The late Queen in 2012 to celebrate the diamond jubilee.

“Originally intended to become a royal charger, Elizabeth’s path instead led to the Metropolitan Police, where her role was primarily operational rather than ceremonial,” the spokesperson said. “Known affectionately as Lizzie, she took part in all aspects of policing, bringing her intelligence, affection, and trademark mischief to every duty. On occasion, she did ride in historic ceremonies, including her moving presence as part of The Queen’s state funeral, as well as at the coronation of King Charles.

“Elizabeth’s distinguished career reflects both her versatility and the significant role she played in policing and ceremonial life. Now retired at The Horse Trust, her charm and spirit continue to shine as she begins this well-deserved next chapter.”

George and Lizzie join the herd of retired horses at the charity, which promised they will enjoy days of peace “surrounded by the same care and respect they gave in service”.

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said: “We are incredibly honoured to welcome George and Lizzie to their forever home. Their years of hard work and service are testament to their strength, spirit and unwavering reliability. Their presence here is a reminder of the vital role horses continue to play in national life.”

The Royal Family has paid tribute to a much-loved Windsor grey, who has been reunited with his father and sister after 15 years of service to his country.

The Royal Mews’ 19-year-old gelding Tyrone has retired to the Horse Trust, where he was welcomed with a neigh from his sister Meg, who was waiting for him in a field with their sire Storm.

“The three former state carriage horses, all Windsor greys, touched noses over the fence in a joyful reunion, now set to spend the rest of their days grazing together in the peace of the Chiltern Hills,” a Horse Trust spokesperson said.

“After 15 years of loyal service at the heart of Britain’s most historic royal occasions, we are honoured to welcome him to his new home and to reunite him with his family.”

Tyrone made his royal debut in 2012, when he took The late Queen to the state opening of parliament. Since then, the spokesperson said, he had been a “constant and dependable presence at almost every major royal occasion”.

“His final public duty last month, carrying The King and Queen during the state visit of President Macron, was a brilliant end to an exemplary lifetime of public service,” she added.

Tyrone, who was known for his kind nature, was a wheeler, one of the horses positioned closest to the state carriage. The 17.2hh gelding was often paired with his sister, including for The King’s coronation in 2023 and trooping the colour last year.

“After 14 years of noble service with the Royal Mews, we are celebrating Tyrone and wishing him a happy retirement!” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.

Royal Mews crown equerry Colonel Toby Browne said The late Queen took a great interest in the horses, and loved the family connection between Storm, Tyrone and Meg.

“He is a very popular chap, a big fan favourite,” he said. “Everyone loves Tyrone. He is totally dependable, very hard-working and really deserves his retirement.”

A member of staff who worked closely with Tyrone added that he is a very loyal, stoic horse.

“There is not a bad bone in his body,” he said. “He is just the gentlest giant. He will be hugely missed because he is so reliable and so kind-natured. Over his 15-year career, he has helped so many members of staff learn and we have paired him with young horses to teach them the ropes.”

The Horse Trust spokesperson said Tyrone is happily enjoying his grass, and that he and his father are now “the best of friends”.

“In an emotional moment, Tyrone stepped off the horse lorry and was greeted by the welcoming whicker of his sister Meg, who was waiting alongside their father Storm in the paddock,” she said.

“Although he is at retirement age, the skip in his step would fool anyone into thinking he was still in his prime. Watching him trot out to pasture with his family, with a couple of bucks and of course a good old signature grey horse roll, on this bright summer day was a joyful moment for everyone at the sanctuary.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen added: “After all his years of public service, bringing joy and pride to the country, it is time for us to serve him and give him the best possible life here, where our horses are treated like royalty.”

Severely neglected Friesian mule has ‘promise of a bright future’ after rescue

A severely neglected mule, the result of a Friesian bred with a donkey, has “the promise of a bright future” after undergoing life-saving surgery thanks to his rescuers.

This week the Horse Trust welcomed four-year-old mule Frank, who was rescued by Communities for Horses in Swansea.

A spokesperson for the Horse Trust said Frank was found in “an appalling condition”.

“Thanks to the compassion of a good samaritan and the swift action of Communities for Horses in Swansea, Frank was rescued from severe neglect, and the Horse Trust was asked to step in and take him into their ownership,” he said.

“His most urgent medical issue, a shocking and painful mass thought to have been likely caused by a botched and illegal castration attempt – or was potentially a tumour that had become dangerously infected. The nature of the injury and mass was deeply distressing and must have been causing him excruciating pain.”

Frank underwent surgery at Cotts Equine Hospital in Wales.

“The surgeon found he had two sarcoids in that site and a third on his face, so these were removed,” said the Horse Trust spokesperson.

“His secondary infection is responding well to antibiotics and the threat of a cancer that may have spread has been alleviated to the immense relief of all involved. If it had been such a cancer, Frank would have had to be euthanised.”

The spokesperson added that “despite his painful past, Frank has responded to kindness with gentleness”.

“He has bright white scars from inappropriate tethering, likely inflicted when he was very young, and overgrown hooves – both signs of prolonged neglect. And yet, he remains trusting, resilient, and affectionate,” he said.

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said Frank’s story “is one of the most heartbreaking” the charity has encountered in recent years.

“No animal should ever suffer as he has,” she said. “He had us all extremely stressed waiting to hear if he had made it through surgery and to find out what the surgeon had discovered. It was awful knowing during that time we might lose him before we even got to meet him.

“We’re so grateful to everyone who has already supported young Frank’s journey and been part of his story so far. At only four years old, he needed to be given the life-saving chance of treatment and the guarantee of a safe home afterwards. Thanks to our wonderful donors, we can do that.”

A Communities for Horses spokesperson said: “We’re incredibly proud to be working alongside the Horse Trust to give Frank the very best chance at life. His ordeal was horrific, but thanks to swift, collaborative action, he now has hope, healing, and the promise of a brighter future.”

The Horse Trust has launched an emergency appeal to cover the £20,000 needed for Frank’s surgery, hospitalisation and long-term care.

“Thanks to our supporters we have already raised over £6,500, but there is still a long way to go,” said the Horse Trust spokesperson.

Putting horses’ health first: royal support for scheme battling equine obesity

Princess Royal is supportive of a scheme designed to combat equine obesity in showing – as more horses and ponies than ever before are to be involved.

Princess Anne is patron of The Horse Trust, whose Weigh to Win scheme, for which special awards are given to the horse or pony in the healthiest body condition in certain showing classes, has been running for six years.

She attended a training day run by the charity, at which she and others including vets, riders, judges and representatives of showing societies heard more about the adverse effects of obesity. Guests were given demonstrations of body condition scoring, weighbridge and weigh tape use and ultrasound scanning of fatty deposits.

“The Princess Royal spoke with many of the guests about their involvement with Weigh to Win and reflected on the challenge of keeping horses at a healthy weight, sharing some of her own experiences and anecdotes,” a Horse Trust spokesperson said. “Her Royal Highness, as patron of the charity, was enthusiastic about its positive impact and thanked the delegates for their support in driving the awards forward.”

The initiative came about after a conversation at the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Congress inspired Horse Trust CEO Jeanette Allen to rethink the way equine obesity is addressed.

“I thought, if society is recognising a higher body condition score is OK, how do we shift that?” she said. “It occurred to me that we should stop chastising people for the wrong thing and start rewarding them for doing the right thing.” The Horse Trust funded Tamzin Furtado’s PhD on managing equine obesity, which led to the 2019 pilot of the awards.

Behaviour change

Horse Trust head of research and policy Jan Rogers said the team recognised that excess equine weight had become normal, especially in showing, so worked with the University of Liverpool and BEVA and “introduced a hefty dose of behaviour change science to help us figure out how we could make this work”.

Ms Rogers told H&H: “We’re engaging with all sorts of governing bodies through the Showing Council, giving the rosettes in the ring. People scan the back of the rosette and tell us about their win.

“We offer training to all the showing bodies, we’ve inspired a couple of other countries to take it on board; Canada and New Zealand, and the scheme won BEVA’s equine welfare award last year. And it’s so simple to take part.”

The scheme is growing; 47 shows ran the awards last year and 354 rosettes were given out. So far in 2025, 54 shows were completed or confirmed before July, seven were yet to finalise and 288 rosettes had been given out.

“The message to horse owners is that when you do right by your horse, you will be recognised for that, and rewarded,” Ms Allen said. “And it’s to encourage them to keep going, keep trying, keep putting their horses’ health and welfare first. It’s been so exciting to see it gather momentum.

“[The Princess’s visit] was such a great success; judges, vets, show organisers, so many influential people from the showing world, and to hear them talk about how pleased they are that they’ve adopted the programme is really encouraging. It was lovely having Her Royal Highness come to learn more about the process.”

Hickstead showing director David Ingle added that to have Princess Anne’s support is “so significant for a project like the Weigh to Win”.

This year’s Weigh to Win equine weight forum takes place at Hickstead during Royal International (22-27 July), at which there will be “hot topics” up for discussion.

Remarkable horses, extraordinary service: three equines who spent years helping people retire to their forever home

Three “remarkable” horses who have spent years transforming people’s lives have arrived at their final home to enjoy a well-earned retirement.

The Horse Trust said it was delighted to welcome Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) stars Jezz, Vella and Bill after their “extraordinary” service.

“These special horses have spent their working lives transforming the lives of people with disabilities, and we are honoured to offer them the rest, care and companionship they now so richly deserve,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “Only a limited number of RDA ponies and horses retire here each year, so we are always especially pleased when these wonderful animals come through our gates.”

Jezz, 22, is a gentle part-bred Arab with a “curious spirit”, who spent 13 years with Beechley RDA in Liverpool.

“Loved by volunteers and riders alike, she took part in therapy sessions, taught vet students equine care skills, and competed at the RDA National Championships,” the spokesperson said, adding that Jezz also helped deliver therapy sessions and took part in events at Aintree with the Jockey Club.

Vella, a 20-year-old Irish Sport Horse/cob, “brought confidence and joy to riders at Barrow Farm RDA in Essex for more than seven years”. She supported students with additional educational needs, was trained as a hoist pony for those with physical disabilities and had success in competition.

“With her gentle nature and springy trot, she was the perfect balance of calmness and challenge,” the spokesperson said. “She’s now making the most of her retirement – with a muddy roll never far off!”

Skewbald Bill, 26, spent six years with Gaddesden Place RDA in Hemel Hempstead.

“Known for his intelligence and sweet temperament, Bill was a vital part of hippotherapy sessions for children with complex needs, always patient and dependable even in emotional or challenging circumstances,” the spokesperson said. “Although now retired due to arthritis, he remains full of character and continues to bring joy to those who meet him.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said the team was “incredibly proud” to welcome the three horses to their well-earned retirement.

“These exceptional horses have spent their lives supporting people with disabilities through equine-assisted therapy, and now it’s our turn to give back to them,” she said. “Every horse that joins our Home of Rest is given the highest standard of care, comfort and companionship, and we’re honoured to offer them a peaceful home for the rest of their days.”

The Horse Trust is appealing for supporters to contribute to an appeal, to allow the charity to care for more horses in need.

‘More than a horse – a loyal friend and gentleman’: sad farewell to cavalry veteran who served for 15 years and relished retirement

A faithful, graceful Army horse, who was a “loyal friend and a true gentleman” has died aged 22 after a happy retirement.

Jaipur, who served in the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment for 15 years, had to be put down owing to severe colic, a year after he retired to the Horse Trust.

“Although he was only with us for a short time, Jaipur touched the hearts of everyone who met him,” a spokesperson for the charity said.

“A striking black gelding with a kind soul, known fondly as having ‘the bounciest trot in all the Life Guards Squadron’, Jaipur was a familiar face at some of the country’s most iconic events, including Trooping the Colour, the state opening of parliament, musical rides and more.”

Jaipur, who also excelled in showjumping, winning derby classes, was described by his regiment as “faithful throughout the duration of his service.”

“Jaipur perfectly balanced athletic power with parade-ground poise,” the spokesperson said. “Whether out in the field or on duty at Horse Guards Parade, he carried himself with effortless grace.”

Jaipur “relished” his retirement, as he was reunited with former colleagues and made new friends.

“He was especially close to fellow cavalry retiree Incognito; his best friend and partner in crime, often seen grazing by his side or galloping together into pastures new,” the spokesperson said. “During a brief period of recovery in the stables from a cannon bone injury, Jaipur also struck up an unlikely friendship with Shadow, a Shetland pony. Though their paths wouldn’t usually cross, the two were very interested in each other during their time indoors.

“Gentle and loving by nature, Jaipur quickly became a visitor favourite and was often brought in to say hello on open days, always winning hearts with his calm, noble presence.”

Jaipur initially showed signs of improvement after his acute bout of colic but his condition deteriorated.

“With a poor prognosis for recovery, we made the heart-breaking decision to put him to sleep in his best interests,” the spokesperson said.

“We feel deeply honoured to have cared for Jaipur in his final chapter. He was more than a horse – he was a loyal friend, a true gentleman, and a cherished member of our herd.”

‘We wish him the very best’: much-loved ‘towering’ police horse retires to final home aged 20

A “towering” police horse known for his size, strength and gentleness, and the “vital role” he played in maintaining public order, has been making new friends as he starts his well-earned retirement.

Former Police Scotland recruit Inverness is settling in well at The Horse Trust, his final home, and the charity said it was delighted to welcome the 20-year-old Clydesdale.

“Over his remarkable 12-year career, Inverness supported Police Scotland at some of the highest-profile events in the country,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “From the 2014 Commonwealth Games, COP26 in Glasgow, and the Open Championship, to countless Old Firm and Edinburgh derby matches, he remained a calm and commanding presence in the crowd. He also played a vital role in maintaining public order during historic moments, such as the 2016 Scottish Cup Final at Hampden Park and the 2021 title celebrations in George Square following Rangers’ Scottish Premiership victory.”

Constable Claire Knowles, instructor and assessor with the Police Scotland mounted unit, said Inverness had had a full and varied career, partnering many riders.

“As well as his frontline duties, he helped train new officers – recruits will no doubt remember how he helped tone their core muscles!” she said. “He’s affectionate and quirky – he’ll be sorely missed, and we wish him the very best in retirement.”

The spokesperson said Inverness has settled in very well and is enjoying his new life.

“In a comical twist for a horse known to dislike the rain, he’s already making the most of the warmer southern weather,” she said. “He recently had a fresh clip to help him adjust to the unseasonably warm spring, standing patiently and clearly enjoying the extra attention from our team.”

Inverness has been reunited with fellow former Police Scotland horses Kilsyth and Edinburgh in a herd that also includes retirees from the Lancashire and City of London, and former English Heritage historical reenactment star Bob, who has become Inverness’s particular friend.

Horse Trust equine care officer Steven Grice said: “At 17.2hh, he’s certainly the tallest member of the group, and the others are still getting used to his towering presence.

“Sociable and curious, Inverness often strolls over during field checks and has even been lending a hoof to groom Ed as he cleaned out the water trough. We’re thrilled to have him here and look forward to seeing how he continues to settle in over time.”

‘He proved that healing is possible’: horse rescued from ‘heartbreaking neglect’ dies surrounded by love

A youngster saved in “one of the worst rescue cases ever seen in the UK” who underwent an “extraordinary transformation” to a loving horse who changed others’ lives has died after a bout of colic.

The Horse Trust said it was heartbroken by the loss of Merlin aged seven, but takes some comfort in the fact he was “surrounded by the love he was meant to have” in his last years.

Merlin, along with Galahad, Guinevere, Arthur, and Morgana, was found in “heartbreaking conditions” in a group of 130 horses rescued in 2019, a Horse Trust spokesperson said.

“His coat matted, underweight, and petrified due to the suffering he had endured,” she said.

“When he arrived at The Horse Trust at somewhere between one and two years old, no one could have predicted the star Merlin would become.

“Despite his difficult start in life, the compassionate training Merlin received carried him forward. With patience and care, he slowly built positive associations with people, overcoming the extreme fear he had developed in his early years.”

Merlin’s dull coat brightened, the spokesperson said, adding that he had found his home as well as his sanctuary.

“He formed deep friendships within his herd and developed strong partnerships with our team, frequently whinnying and running to greet those who had built a connection with him,” she said. “His transformation was nothing short of extraordinary.”

Horse Trust director of training Charlotte Launder worked very closely with Merlin, and he began to associate humans with kindness.

“He was one of the most nervous horses we’ve ever had, but he eventually learned to associate me with good things,” she said. “He taught me as much as I taught him about force-free training. We grew together.”

The spokesperson said that when Merlin was struck by the sudden and severe colic, his training meant he could be travelled to the Royal Veterinary College – “something we never could have imagined in his early days, when simply touching him was impossible”.

“While his time with us was shorter than we had hoped, we take comfort in knowing that he spent the majority of his life surrounded by compassion, care, and the love he was always meant to have,” she said. “We gave him a second chance, and in turn, he changed our lives too.

“Merlin proved that healing is possible for even some of the most severe rescue cases, that trust can be built and that a terrified young horse can become a confident, loving soul with the right support. Now, as he crosses the rainbow bridge, we imagine him reunited with his lost friends, galloping side by side once more.

“His legacy will continue to guide us, ensuring that more ponies like him get the time, space, and care they need. Some horses can never have a life outside our sanctuary – but here, they are safe, valued, and given every chance to thrive, no matter how long it takes. Rest in peace, Merlin. You were so very loved.”

‘Beneath her strong will, she was a kind and sensitive soul who cherished life’s simple pleasures’: heartbroken farewell to free-spirited horse who served her country

A “free-spirited” mare who served her country for over a decade, then embraced her retirement has died at the age of 19.

Former Household Cavalry recruit Longbow had settled beautifully at The Horse Trust, to which she was retired last year, but had to be put down owing to a serious injury.

“It is with great sorrow that we share the passing of our beloved Longbow,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “Some horses arrive at our Home of Rest for Horses and it feels as though they were always meant to find their way here. Longbow was one of those special souls. A stunning black mare with a free spirit, she took to retirement like a duck to water, roaming the fields she loved with her best friend, Kimberly, always by her side.”

Longbow mainly served in The Queen’s (now The King’s) Life Guard ceremonial unit. She also enjoyed showjumping, taking part in military competitions.

“Beneath her strong will, she was a kind and sensitive soul who cherished life’s simple pleasures,” the spokesperson said.

Longbow retired in 2024; the spokesperson said that she had been vet-shy for years and the Army and charity had a meeting to discuss whether she would adapt to retirement, given her “complex needs”.

“When she arrived, naturally turned out, we were delighted by how brilliantly she settled,” she said. “Longbow beautifully embraced retirement and appeared to relish just being a horse. She was reunited with her old companion Kimberley, their London-born friendship continuing in the rolling fields of the Chilterns. While she settled into life in the countryside, she also carried a touch of city sophistication, refusing to eat a carrot if it had touched the dust.

“Horse Trust veterinary assistant Claire formed a special partnership with Longbow, patiently working with her to build confidence through needle training, leading, and catching sessions. Longbow made incredible progress and towards the end looked forward to her training sessions with Claire.”

Claire said she loved working with Longbow.

“We were really making progress, and I was heartbroken to say goodbye – though I know it was the kindest decision for her,” she said.

Owing to the seriousness of Longbow’s injury, and after discussion on whether it would be fair to put her through months of box rest and veterinary treatment, it was agreed that “the kindest decision was to say goodbye”.

“Like all the horses at our Home of Rest, Longbow was an individual and decisions regarding her injury were taken with her wellbeing at the heart,” the spokesperson said. “While we are devastated by her loss, we take comfort in knowing that her final years were filled with love, freedom, and friendship.

“Now, we bid her farewell as she gallops across endless green pastures. Rest in peace, Longbow. You were truly loved.”

Heartbroken farewell to ‘beloved equine hero’ who led royal wedding, met stars and touched hearts

A former police horse who led the procession at Prince Harry’s wedding and was thanked for his work by Ed Sheeran – and was a “beloved companion, a true equine hero” – has died aged 23.

The Horse Trust confirmed that 17.2hh Irish draught gelding Rubin had succumbed to a “sudden and severe” bout of colic, after a happy retirement.

A spokesperson for the charity said Rubin joined South Wales Police aged four and became the mounted branch’s longest-serving equine recruit, “dedicating an incredible 14 years to the force”.

“He was widely regarded as one of their best and bravest, always leading by example and offering steady guidance to younger, less experienced horses,” the spokesperson said.

“A horse of many talents, Rubin played a key role in some of the most prestigious and high-profile events in recent history. He proudly led the procession at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, alongside fellow Horse Trust resident Samson, basking in the attention.”

Rubin was also on duty at the London Olympics, Royal Ascot, Six Nations rugby matches and a NATO conference, as well as many other community and ceremonial events.

“He even rubbed shoulders with the stars and was thanked in person by singer Ed Sheeran for policing his four nights at the Principality Stadium,” the spokesperson said. “Whether standing guard at an art display or providing reassurance in the heart of a bustling crowd, Rubin carried out his duties with unwavering courage and grace.

“In the later years of his career, Rubin became a trusted teacher, helping new and inexperienced riders find their confidence. Always dependable, always steady, he ensured those in his care felt safe. He was a true gentle giant, known for his affectionate nature, he loved his cuddles (or ‘cwtches’ as his Welsh teammates fondly called them) and would happily stand for hours being groomed by his two and four-legged friends alike.”

Rubin arrived at the Horse Trust in 2022 for a “well-earned retirement filled with love, care, and adoration from his devoted supporters”.

“He was a firm favourite at our open days, always eager to greet visitors with his signature warmth and charm,” the spokesperson said. “His passing, after a sudden and severe bout of colic, was a heartbreaking loss. Despite the very best efforts of our veterinary team, the prognosis for recovery was very poor, and the incredibly difficult decision was made to let him go peacefully.

“Rubin was not just a remarkable police horse, he was a beloved companion, a guardian, a teacher and a true equine hero. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched, and he will for ever be remembered with love, gratitude, and immense respect.

“Rest in peace, Rubin. We miss you already.”

‘It was his time’: sad farewell to 30-year-old pony who brought joy to so many

Tributes have been paid to a “cherished” pony who “touched the lives of many” during his 20 years with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), who has died aged 30.

Rupert, who retired to the Horse Trust in 2023, had spent two decades at the RDA’s Elisabeth Curtis Centre helping riders of all abilities gain “confidence, skills, and joy”.

“His gentle nature made him a source of comfort through difficult times, and his playful personality ensured there was always laughter in the yard,” said a Horse Trust spokesperson.

“Rupert was a firm favourite at the centre, known not just for his steadfast work ethic but also for his ability to entertain; he had a way of making every moment memorable.”

In 2016 Rupert was honoured with a special award at the Elisabeth Curtis Centre’s 40th anniversary party, in “testament to his years of dedication”.

He retired after “one final ride with dear friends”, and settled “beautifully”.

“Though his time with us was short, Rupert made a lasting impact. He was a gentle soul, easy to care for, and much loved by all who knew him,” said the spokesperson.

“More recently, we shared a video of Rupert’s herd enjoying their new field. While the younger horses galloped in excitement, Rupert took one look and decided he had more important things to do, heading straight for the fresh grass instead. Ever the wise old man, he knew what he liked, and he was never one to waste energy when a good meal was waiting!”

The spokesperson added that although the charity may “never know the exact cause of his passing”, they take comfort in knowing it was “simply his time”.

“Rupert spent his final days in peace, surrounded by friends, in a place where he was truly cherished,” he said.

A ‘real-life unicorn’: heartbroken farewell to ‘gentle giant’ former police horse aged 24

The Horse Trust has paid tribute to a courageous “gentle giant” and “real-life unicorn” former police horse, who has died at the age of 24.

The charity said it was heartbroken to confirm that it had had to let 18.2hh Samson go, owing to health issues, after an afternoon’s grazing and “surrounded with love”.

“A towering grey gelding, Samson was a gentle giant who brought light, laughter, and unforgettable memories to all who knew him, in particular his wonderful sponsors who followed him throughout his retirement,” a spokesperson for the charity said.

Samson was originally part of a falconry display team in Hampshire, where “his calm nature and majestic presence made him a crowd favourite”.

Aged 12, he joined Thames Valley Police, where he earned a reputation for courage and reliability. Within six months, he was on duty at major football matches and escorting The late Queen at Royal Ascot. He also took part in ceremonial parades, school visits, and search patrols for missing persons.

“His courage shone during a violent demonstration in Brighton, where the horses and officers involved received a commendation for bravery,” the spokesperson said. “Despite the rigours of his duties, Samson’s charismatic side often shone through. Every morning, before patrol or a big event, he needed a thorough wash – typical of a grey, he made sure he got as muddy as possible!

“He was lovingly nicknamed Sammy Sausage by his colleagues, a name that accompanied him into retirement in 2017.”

PC Webb, who rode Samson, said at the time: “He was used to crowds and settled into the situation really quickly, he soon became one of our best horses — he was Mr Reliable.”

Samson joined Caesar, another former Thames Valley Police horse, in retirement, and found a new “girlfriend”, Rosalind.

“Samson’s most iconic friendship however, was with Alf, a former Cleveland Police horse,” the spokesperson said. “The pair were inseparable, sharing a bond and Labrador-like traits that brought endless joy to those around them. Together, they were often the source of hilarious escapades, such as dismantling a trough and flooding the barn (twice!) in what can only be described as a spirited game of mischief.

“Samson’s personality made him a firm favourite among supporters, and he regularly featured in our ‘Tongue Out Tuesday’ posts, showcasing his impressively long tongue. Over the years, he became a treasured sponsor horse, helping to connect supporters with our mission to provide gold-standard care for equine heroes. He was always a big hit with visitors.”

But Samson’s health started to decline late last year. His arthritis, which had been manageable, worsened, and as he also had PPID (Cushing’s), he did not heal as well as other horses.

“Despite the efforts of our veterinary and equine care teams, his condition sadly did not improve,” the spokesperson said. “After an afternoon spent grazing and being thoroughly spoiled by the team, the kindest decision was made to let him go peacefully, surrounded by love.”

PC Webb said the mounted section was “deeply saddened”.

“But we find comfort in the fact that he was able to enjoy a long and happy retirement with The Horse Trust who cared for him so well,” he said. “During his career, Samson and I soon built a solid partnership and he was the first to come and sniff my pockets for his favourite treat, a Bourbon biscuit! He had a cheeky personality, loved to stick his tongue out for photos and was a great escape artist. Rest in peace, Samson, you were our real-life unicorn and will be missed.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said the farm already feels different without Samson.

“Life without Samson will take some big adjustments,” she said. “No other 18.2hh horse would have stood so patiently in their stable for two months as he did when recovering from a fractured leg. This is just one example of Samson’s immense kindness, patience, and gentle spirit. He will be deeply missed.

“Samson’s name, derived from the word for sun, is a fitting tribute to the warmth, strength and radiance he brought into all our lives. He was a horse of many talents, with a career of falconry displays, police work, followed by a joyful retirement filled with beautiful friendships and a lot of fun. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, kindness, and countless fond memories. We will be keeping a close eye on Alf in the coming weeks after the loss of his best pal.

“Rest in peace, Samson, our ‘big friendly giant’, You will for ever be missed but never forgotten.”

Farewell to police horse whose ‘noble spirit left a mark on all’

The Horse Trust has paid tribute to one of its long-term equine residents, described as a “true partner, friend and hero”, who has died aged 26.

Hadrian retired to the charity’s Buckinghamshire base in 2012 after eight years’ service with the Metropolitan Police.

The gelding, also known as “The Nose” owing to his “strong Roman nose”, participated in all the force’s routine tasks, including public order work, football matches and ceremonial duties. Some of Hadrian’s high-profile events included policing the G8 summit, New Year’s Eve celebrations and FA Cup finals.

A Horse Trust spokesperson said Hadrian served his community with “unwavering strength and loyalty” and was a “cherished presence”.

“Whether on duty in the city or in the quieter moments of rest, Hadrian’s calm demeanour and noble spirit left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him,” he said.

Hadrian first visited the Horse Trust for a period of rest following a lameness issue, but when it was deemed he should retire, he took up full residence at the charity in 2012.

“He enjoyed his well-earned days of peace and care, bringing joy to those around him with his gentle nature and unshakeable warmth,” said the spokesperson.

Hadrian had chronic lameness conditions which were managed by the Horse Trust’s veterinary team, but these deteriorated.

“Recently, it was noted that Hadrian was starting to struggle to get around and he was already receiving maximum pain medication and treatments. Therefore, it was the kindest decision to let Hadrian go peacefully and be free from pain,” said the spokesperson.

“Having been with us for 12 years, his loss is deeply felt by all who worked with him and loved him. He was not just a horse; he was a true partner, a friend, and a hero who will always be remembered with fondness and respect.”

‘It was his calling’: farewell to RDA pony who ‘gave laughter and smiles to all’

Tributes have been paid to a retired Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) pony who “gave laughter and smiles to all he met”.

Bramble, who retired to the Horse Trust after 10 years with the Gaddesden Place RDA, died last month aged 25, following a bout of colic.

A Horse Trust spokesperson described 13.2hh Bramble as “a pony with a heart of gold”.

“He was a gentle soul who gave laughter and smiles to all he met throughout his career,” he said, adding that Bramble would stand for riders to mount via electric ramps and hoists.

“To Bramble riding was more than work; it was a calling.”

The gelding took part in sponsored rides, open days, and dressage competitions. He retired last year following a final ride at the RDA dressage regionals.

“Bramble gave his all in his years with Gaddesden Place RDA and he leaves a legacy of love, strength, and compassion,” said the Horse Trust spokesperson, adding that he was welcomed into a “richly earned retirement” at the charity.

“In the time he had with us he enjoyed the peace and quiet he was more than worthy of, knowing he had made a difference in more lives than words could ever capture. Bramble was popular with all, making him a perfect candidate for our sponsorship scheme and we would like to thank those who supported him during his retirement.”

The spokesperson added: “Rest peacefully now, sweet Bramble. You gave your all and more, and you leave us with hearts full of gratitude. May you roam free and happy across boundless fields, knowing your legacy of love, courage, and kindness will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved you.”

‘It’s been an honour’: Army horse injured in London heads home fully healed after holiday

The grey Household Cavalry horse who was seen galloping through the streets of London last spring is back with his regiment having made a complete recovery.

Pictures of Vida, injured in the capital, spread worldwide in April; he was one of five horses who broke loose on a routine ride, having been spooked by a sudden noise from construction work.

The injured horses were treated by the regiment’s “superb” vets, after which Trojan, Tennyson and Vanquish spent time recovering at The Horse Trust. The day these three went back to London, Vida and Quaker, who had been more badly hurt, were discharged from veterinary care to enjoy their own summer holiday at the Buckinghamshire charity’s base.

“At The Horse Trust, Vida was given the time and space to recover both physically and emotionally,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “[Our] compassionate care team provided a safe, quiet environment where he could complete his recovery and unwind, often seen rolling happily in the mud – true to the reputation of a typical grey!

“Sharing a paddock with former service horses, including Royal Mews retiree Storm, Vida spent his days playing with our older yet still spritely residents, and enjoying the lush pastures.”

Horse Trust veterinary director Nicola Housby Skeggs said waving goodbye to Vida was “bittersweet”.

“He has been an absolute superstar, winning the grooms’ hearts – and treats,” she said.

“We are so pleased to see him make such a fantastic recovery. While he will be missed here, as a relative youngster, he is certainly now ready for some exercise!”

Senior groom Lotte, who cared for Vida at The Horse Trust, said: Vida is a “very sweet boy”, quick to learn and eager to please.

“He is full of character and came over whinnying to us every time we went out,” she said.

“He absolutely loves attention, maybe even more than he likes rolling in the muddiest part of the field! We will miss him greatly, but we look forward to seeing him back out and about soon.”

Horse Trust CEO Jeanette Allen added that it had been an honour to take Vida for his recovery.

“Vida has come to hold a particular place in our hearts, he’s been a joy to care for, partly as we don’t have to groom that muddy monster for parade!” she said

“He’s had a lovely time, and we are extremely proud of him as he sets off back to his role in the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. The Horse Trust was founded 138 years ago as a charity to provide a place of respite for London’s working horses and now specialises in offering five-star respite and retirement to service horses from around the country. We know our founder, Ann Lindo, would have loved Vida; she had a very soft spot for greys.

“We’ll so miss having him around, but we all wish him every success in the rest of his service career.”

‘Ridiculously handsome, a true gentleman’: farewell to ‘the perfect cavalry black’

The Horse Trust has said a sad goodbye to “the perfect cavalry black”, who has had to be put down aged 27 after a long and happy retirement.

Commando, a “strikingly handsome” 17.3hh gelding, had spent 12 years enjoying the “gold standard of retirement” at the charity’s base in the Chilterns, but suffered from arthritis and asthma, and despite ongoing care, vets decided it was in his best interests to say goodbye.

Commando spent 10 years in the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry, during which time he was on duty at events including the Prince and Princess of Wales’ wedding, The late Queen’s golden and diamond jubilees and state openings of parliament.

“Although he was an exemplary cavalry horse throughout his career, Commando began to suffer with arthritis in several joints, which eventually led to his retirement,” a spokesperson for the Horse Trust said. “We were delighted to receive him here alongside some of his fellow comrades including Union, Venture and Zulu, and we were keen to give them the gold standard of equine retirement provided here in the peaceful Chiltern hills.”

The spokesperson said Commando was still fairly young for a retiring military horse, and “still had plenty of joie de vivre, as shown by his proclivity to kick at his stable door when he first started to come into a stable during visiting hours, which promptly got him relieved of this duty!

“Luckily for him, his ridiculously handsome good looks meant he got away with this roguish behaviour, and also meant he featured alongside famous War Horse puppet Joey for our commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the First World War.”

The spokesperson added that Commando was known as a true gentleman.

“He found a firm friend in Wellington, another Household Cavalry retiree who joined us a couple of years after Commando’s arrival,” she said. “The two perhaps shared tales of their working days, having both had the honour of carrying the standard for the Blues and Royals. They certainly were very close companions; during breakfast time Wellington would affectionately lick Commando after finishing his feed. Sadly, we lost Wellington a few months ago but hopefully they have now been reunited in the unending pastures in the sky.

“The Horse Trust won’t be the same after the loss of beautiful Commando, but our work to give these equine heroes the best retirement throughout their twilight years is crucial to us and preserving their dignity comes before anything else.

“Gentle, trustworthy and protective, Commando was truly a special soul, which is why he was selected to be a treasured sponsor resident and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all his kind and generous sponsors who have enabled us to give him the best care throughout his retirement, which allowed him to reach the grand old age of 27 in comfort.

‘The best boy’: 18.2hh police horse who stole hearts in TV interview arrives at his forever home

An 18.2hh police horse who loves bananas and chin scratches – and is “the best boy” – has arrived at his last home to enjoy a well-earned retirement.

H&H reported in June that Thames Valley Police (TVP) stalwart Atlas, who led The late Queen’s funeral procession, was to be on patrol at the final Royal Ascot of his seven-year career.

The 14-year-old is bowing out owing to arthritis and soundness issues, to enjoy the “love, care, and relaxation that he deserves”, a Horse Trust spokesperson said, adding: “It was an emotional day as his colleagues from TVP said their heartfelt goodbyes, while Atlas met his new companions at our Home of Rest for Horses.”

The spokesperson said Atlas had been a “towering and reassuring presence” at TVP since his arrival in 2017. He was on duty at Prince Philip’s funeral, The King’s coronation and the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as “serving tirelessly at football matches, protests and on joint operations”.

“The bond between Atlas and his former team is second to none,” the charity spokesperson said. “Atlas was cared for by his former rider, James Metcalf, while awaiting a space at The Horse Trust. James, with five fellow officers who had shared the honour of riding Atlas over the years, accompanied him to his new home in Buckinghamshire, each reflecting on the special moments they shared with him.”

James said Atlas was a “true gentle giant”.

“He’s best friends with fellow TVP horse Odin,” he said. “He’s got a love for bananas, chin scratches, and his massage pad—he’s the best boy.”

Atlas won hearts this year when he featured in what should have been a “serious interview” with James – but stole the show, trying to eat the microphone and asking for attention from the officer.

“Known for his playful and curious nature, Atlas always succeeded in keeping his colleagues entertained, especially PC Metcalf, with whom he shared a heartwarming interview ahead of Ascot,” the spokesperson said. “The bloopers generated a lot of engagement from his supporters, as Atlas took a keen interest in the microphone! Despite his size, Atlas’s labrador-like affection endeared him to everyone he met, both on and off duty.”

Atlas will live with former TVP colleagues including Trojan, and Rubin and Samson, whom he knew during his career.

“We are honoured to welcome this remarkable horse into our care,” said Horse Trust CEO Jeanette Allen. “Atlas has touched the lives of so many through his dedicated service, and he has already captured the hearts of our team. We look forward to providing him with the love, care, and peaceful retirement he so deserves.”

Tears and applause as ‘gentle yet bold’ Army horse retires at Burghley after 14 years’ service

A “gentle yet bold” 17.2hh gelding who has served in the Household Division for 14 years was retired with fitting ceremony at Defender Burghley Horse Trials.

Irish-bred 18-year-old Atticus took centre stage in the main arena at Burghley on Sunday (8 September). His saddle was removed and swapped for a rug from the Horse Trust, where he will spend his retirement.

“This marked the end of an extraordinary 14-year career, during which he served as an officer’s charger,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “Now aged 18, Atticus is set to enjoy a well-earned retirement at our Home of Rest for Horses in the beautiful Chilterns.”

The spokesperson said Atticus had been an integral part of the division, “excelling” in parades and on state occasions.

“His calm and quiet temperament, along with his dignified presence, made him a standout at some of the UK’s most significant royal and military events,” he added.

A spokesperson for the Household Division added that Atticus had been ridden by Foot Guards officers in many key positions on parade.

“His quiet temperament made him perfectly suited for the role, and his striking appearance made him stand out,” he said.

The Horse Trust spokesperson said Burghley “provided the perfect setting to honour Atticus’s long and noble career”.

“At midday, just before the excitement of the Shetland Pony Grand National, Atticus took his final steps as a member of the Household Division in the main arena,” he said. “Before a moved and tearful crowd, his saddle was removed for the last time, and he was wrapped in the comfort of his new Horse Trust rug, symbolising the end of his distinguished career and the beginning of a peaceful and fulfilling retirement among friends, both old and new, in the serene fields of Buckinghamshire.

“The touching moment was met with tears and applause, a fitting tribute to Atticus’s loyal service and his lasting impact on The Household Division.”

‘We’re thrilled to have you’: brave police horse officially retired after ‘remarkable’ career

A police horse of “unparalleled bravery” has retired with all due ceremony after a career that was “nothing short of remarkable”.

Oliver, formerly of the Metropolitan Police mounted unit, was officially retired, aged 18, at The Horse Trust, during its annual fundraising Horses, Hounds and Heroes event. He will enjoy a “restful and relaxing retirement, full of the love he so richly deserves”.

The 17.1hh Irish draught gelding started his career with the Met in 2011.

“Oliver’s tenure with the Met Police has been nothing short of remarkable,” said a spokesperson for The Horse Trust.

“As a natural leader, he has been an integral part of numerous high-profile and prestigious events. He has been a guiding force for novice riders, providing them with the confidence and skills needed to excel. Senior officers have frequently relied on Oliver for his steadfastness and reliability, especially during public order and ceremonial events. His bravery is unparalleled, as he has fearlessly protected crowds during various football matches, rugby tournaments, music concerts, protests, and marches across Greater London.”

Oliver also took part in royal ceremonial events, including the funerals of The late Queen and Baroness Thatcher, the Notting Hill Carnival and the Commonwealth Games procession.

“Ridden by esteemed figures such as ex-commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe and senior officers during the Lord Mayor’s Show in 2023, Oliver’s presence has been a mark of honour and excellence,” the spokesperson said.

“Oliver is truly a horse full of character. His loving nature towards people and his fondness for affection make him a beloved companion. Known for his keen interest in people and exceptional ability to search for food and treats, Oliver’s personality shines brightly. His bravery is complemented by his calm demeanour, as he remains unbothered in the face of potential challenges. While he sometimes doesn’t know his own size, he remained polite and very well-mannered, making him a delight to work around.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said it was a privilege to take Oliver in his retirement.

“To see him led in, looking stunning, escorted by the newest generation of Metropolitan Police horses was truly moving,” she said. “Having his saddle removed for the final time, in front of the crowd, was a very special and highly emotional moment for the Met mounted section and for all of us. He has immense presence, and we are thrilled to now going this very special boy to our herd here. Happy retirement Oliver, we are thrilled to have you.”

‘There will never be another Parker’: brave, loving – and chip-stealing – former police horse dies aged 22

A “steadfast, loving and brave” police horse who enjoyed an “exceptional” career – and was not averse to stealing football fans’ chips – has died after a happy retirement.

Former Greater Manchester Police (GMP) mounted branch stalwart Parker has had to be put down at The Horse Trust aged 22, “giving him the dignified end that all those equines who have served the community so bravely deserve”.

A spokesperson for the charity said that Police Horse Parker, “affectionately also known as Piggy due to his high-pitched, squealing whinny”, spent over half of his life serving his community as part of the GMP mounted unit.

“Initially given to GMP in 2012 on loan for five years from his owner, Parker was an instant hit with the officers and public alike, due to his cheeky nature and eccentric, one-of-a-kind squeal,” the spokesperson said. “After those five years, he was returned to his owner but it was clear ‘civilian’ life was no longer for him, and after a mere two weeks he was gifted to GMP’s mounted unit as a permanent police horse.

“Despite being the smallest horse at the mounted unit, he made up for it in bravery and character. From the start of his career, it was obvious he was born to be a police horse and loved his job. Parker led an exceptional career, being involved in most, if not all, of the notable events that have occurred within GMP over the past decade.”

PH Parker was on duty at major football games, tournaments and parades.

“He has led masses of European football fans in walk-downs from the city centre to Old Trafford and the Etihad, on occasion with industrial fireworks crackling behind him,” the spokesperson said.

“Parker was one of the most loved and recognised horses at the GMP mounted unit. Full of character and charm, Parker had been known to steal chips from the forks of many a football fan when they came too close bearing food and regularly liked to check people’s pockets for any forgotten sweets.”

PH Parker retired to The Horse Trust in September 2022 owing to his arthritis. He settled straight in, the spokesperson said, enjoying grazing with his fieldmates.

“Last winter, Parker sustained an eye injury for which he had cutting edge treatment, including trialling a contact lens to protect his eye,” the spokesperson said. “Whilst this treatment was a success, unfortunately Parker’s arthritis continued to deteriorate and his stiffness was noted to be worsening by our wonderful grooms who keep such a close eye on all our residents. The level of stiffness Parker was exhibiting despite his daily pain relief was a serious concern for his quality of life. Therefore, after evaluation, we made the sad decision to put Parker to sleep, giving him the dignified end that all those equines who have served the community so bravely deserve.

“A wonderful horse full of zeal and charm with an amazing legacy working for Greater Manchester Police, Parker, you were an utter sweetheart, one of the friendliest we’ve ever had and we are proud to have cared for you in your final years. Goodnight, PH Parker.”

On his retirement, GMP thanked Parker for his outstanding service.

“Our cheeky, loving, steadfast, brave boy Parker,” the force said at the time. “No quote rings more true than the words ‘horse of a lifetime’ when it comes to you. Not many horses have this kind of impact on people. There will NEVER be another Parker, ever.”

‘The freshest breath on parade!’ Army horse injured in London to star in King’s birthday celebration – after plenty of mints

One of the horses who was injured while running loose in London this spring will be taking part in The King’s birthday parade – with the freshest breath in the regiment.

Tennyson, who was one of the five Household Cavalry horses who were injured after they were spooked in the capital in April, has “returned to service without missing a step”, so much so that he will be among the 242 horses at the event tomorrow (15 June).

Straight after the incident, Tennyson and his colleagues Trojan and Vanquish had emergency veterinary treatment, then after a period at Hyde Park Barracks were sent to The Horse Trust for “expert respite care in rolling fields”.

“Their recovery was so swift and successful that they returned to service last month,” an Army spokesperson said. “Since then, they have been gradually reacclimatised to London life and have shown such aptitude and eagerness that they’re all now back on duty.”

Tennyson will be part of the sovereign’s escort at the rear of the second division in the birthday parade. Trojan and Vanquish will be part of The King’s Life Guard at Horse Guards.

Captain Charles Carr-Smith, 1 Troop Leader, the Life Guards Squadron, Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment said: “Military working horse Tennyson is the epitome of a cavalry black. Bold and brave as a war horse should be, yet a gentleman to ride and groom.

“Tennyson has returned to service without missing a step. His return has lifted the spirits of those in 1 Troop the Life Guards. Knowing that this brilliant horse will once again carry his rider carefully down the Mall or canter off, leaping over log piles in Melton Mowbray, is a comfort to our less experienced riders, who will undoubtedly scramble to put their names alongside his, for daily exercise. Due to so many well-wishers sending in mints, it goes without saying that Tennyson has the freshest breath of any horse on parade!”

Tennyson will be ridden by Corporal of Horse Harvey, the Life Guards Squadron equitation instructor and the most experienced rider in the division.

“The riders caught up in the incident are also doing well, with three of the five who sustained injuries, recovered and back on duty,” the spokesperson said. “The remaining two soldiers continue to make good progress in their recovery and are expected to return to duty in due course. The two more seriously injured horses, Vida and Quaker, are still enjoying their peaceful countryside respite care at The Horse Trust, and will do so for as long as they need.”

Horse Trust CEO Jeanette Allen said everyone at the charity is very happy to see Tennyson, Trojan and Vanquish back on parade.

“Anything we have done to help them complete their recovery, to the point of returning to full duties, means a great deal to us,” she said. “We also thank the public for their continued support of our charity in providing dignified retirements to all types of public service horses and perhaps one day, in the hopefully distant future, these boys may return to live out their days here at the end of their service.

“Their friends Vida and Quaker are still enjoying their peaceful countryside respite with us and will do so for as long as they need.”

Joy as Army horses and riders injured in London make ‘remarkable’ recoveries

The five military working horses who were injured after running loose through London in April are “recovering with remarkable speed”, as are their riders.

An update from the Army today (4 June) said that three of the horses are now back on duty and “against all expectations” are looking likely to take part in The King’s Birthday Parade (15 June). The other two are continuing to recuperate in the countryside at The Horse Trust.

Commanding officer of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (HCMR) lieutenant colonel Mathew Woodward said that is is “very likely” that Trojan, Tennyson and Vanquish will participate in Trooping the Colour this month.

“The remaining two, Vida and Quaker, are enjoying a summer holiday in the Chilterns thanks to The Horse Trust,” he said.

“They are expected to make a full recovery and we look forward to seeing them back on duty in due course. Of the two most seriously injured soldiers, one is continuing his recovery at home and the other at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Stanford Hall. They are both considered likely to return to military service in the fullness of time.”

On 24 April, the horses were out on morning exercise in Belgravia when they spooked by construction rubble being dropped through a plastic tunnel. The horses were seen galloping through the streets, as police and the Army worked together to catch them.

Jeanette Allen, chief executive at The Horse Trust, said that it “has been a privilege to provide these wonderful horses with the space and time needed to fully recover”.

“It’s been so lovely to see Trojan, Tennyson and Vanquish enjoying such a relaxing break and now we have Vida and Quaker already loving their time here,” she said.

“All five horses are much younger than our regular service residents and seeing them running, rolling and generally having fun after such a challenging experience, is a real joy.”

Today’s statement from the Army added that the horses’ “remarkable recovery is thanks in no small part to the excellent in-house care they’ve received from the Army’s own dedicated veterinary surgeons and the amazing specialist support provided by The Horse Trust”.

The statements said that all injured soldiers and horses received expert emergency care immediately after the incident, and the horses were then put under constant supervision by Army vets.

Once Trojan, Tennyson and Vanquish were well enough to travel, they were sent for respite at The Horse Trust. After careful assessment, they were found fit to return to London and were collected on 29 May.

“The Horse Trust understands the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle for animals to prevent sickness and injury. Returning to work can help facilitate this lifestyle for the horses, ensuring they remain fit, healthy and enjoy long and fulfilling lives,” said the statement.

“On the same day that Trojan, Tennyson, and Vanquish left the Chilterns to return to Hyde Park Barracks, Vida and Quaker – the two most severely injured horses – were pronounced fit to travel and arrived at The Horse Trust for their respite care, having been discharged from veterinary care in London.

“Vida and Quaker have made a remarkable physical recovery and showed great enthusiasm and joy upon their arrival at The Horse Trust, galloping into fresh pastures. Vida, the Cavalry Grey, wasted no time in turning from white to brown as he rolled in the grass. The horses appeared bright and in good spirits, clearly displaying a close bond with each other and the soldiers who accompanied them.

“The horses will remain with The Horse Trust for as long as they need before being assessed for their suitability to return to work. Onsite veterinary care is available 24/7 to provide any necessary treatment during their stay.

“The long-standing relationship between The Horse Trust and HCMR provides for the perfect support as the military working horses unwind and relax in the Chilterns.”

The statement added: “Both the Army and The Horse Trust have been overwhelmed by the amount of public care and interest in the recovery of the soldiers and horses affected by the incident, and would like to thank everyone that expressed their concern and best wishes for a speedy recovery – they look to have been granted!”

‘Run free, our fighter to the end’: sad farewell to ‘miracle’ mare

A “beautiful miracle mare” who beat all odds to survive the worst body condition an equine charity had ever seen has died after 10 happy years.

The Horse Trust said staff were devastated to announce that Pollyanna, who had lived at the sanctuary since her rescue in 2014, had had to be put down.

A spokesman for the charity said Pollyanna’s “inspirational fight to live” had made her popular with sponsors.

“Pollyanna was found dumped alongside two other mares in a large cornfield near the M25 in Chalfont St Peter in February 10 years ago,” he said. “All three mares were emaciated and in a terrible condition; one was too weak to stand and had to be put to sleep on the scene.”

The other two, Pollyanna and Penelope, were taken to the Horse Trust where despite the team’s best efforts, Penelope had to be put down.

“Tragically, Penelope suffered many complications from the horrific neglect they had suffered, and these were too much for her to bear,” the spokesman said. “She was euthanised to avoid her suffering any further once all avenues to aid her rehabilitation were exhausted.

“However, Pollyanna had a fighting spirit and despite severe emaciation, heavy worm burden, rain scald and conjunctivitis she began to slowly heal and recover thanks to the dedicated care given from the Horse Trust team.”

After a few months of careful feeding, Pollyanna was unrecognisable, the charity said, adding: “She was not only gorgeous to look at but had also grown in confidence, becoming extremely friendly and enjoying nothing more than attention and fuss from the team.

“Her amazing transformation and lovable nature made her a wonderful candidate for our sponsorship scheme and we can only thank those who have supported her journey throughout her life here, as it is regular funds like these that allow us to continue to rehabilitate other horses who find themselves in situations like poor Polly.”

The spokesman said that Pollyanna had stayed healthy and happy but that the psychological effects of her neglect meant she found being in a stable or having intensive courses of veterinary treatment very stressful.

“Therefore, we have always been realistic about her mental welfare should she ever require another rigorous recovery plan,” he said.

“In the past year, she has suffered from low-grade lameness issues that we have managed within her comfort zone. More recently, it became apparent that for a full recovery she would be required to undergo treatment that would cause her extreme stress due to her past. Therefore, we made the difficult decision to say goodnight one final time, protecting Pollyanna’s physical and psychological welfare.

Grey Shire horse who served at The late Queen’s funeral retires aged 18

An 18.2hh grey Shire who served at The late Queen’s funeral has retired from duty aged 18.

Heathfield Forrester retired to the Horse Trust after 12 years’ service to the Royal Parks charity. The organisation cares for and provides free access to the eight Royal Parks of London and historic green spaces, with a team of 10 Shires who are stabled at Richmond Park.

“Heath” worked as a carriage-driving horse, alongside Shire gelding Nobby. At The late Queen’s funeral the pair collected the thousands of floral tributes left by the public.

Heath and Nobby were also involved in a number of public occasions including the Platinum Jubilee, Shire Horse Sunday, and the blessing of the plough at Wellington Barracks. In addition Heath carried out conservation work in London’s green spaces, and provided carriage rides.

“During his time in the Royal Parks, Heath stole many hearts not only due to his eye-catching appearance but because of his brave and kind personality too,” said a Horse Trust spokesman.

“He was described by his former colleagues as a real gentleman who taught all the youngsters the ropes.”

The spokesman added that Heath had “many claims to fame” including featuring on the Channel Five television series Behind the Scenes at Hampton Court Palace, and two appearances on BBC’s Countryfile.

“Heath is no doubt our best horse and it will be a sad day to see him go,” said a Royal Parks spokesman. “We had hoped to have him for a further few years, but I’m sure he will be much loved at the Horse Trust.”

The Horse Trust team is “honoured to welcome Heath after many years of noble service”.

“He brought joy to the days and lives of many, worked hard towards a greener London for everyone, and bravely served our country at countless state occasions,” said the charity’s spokesman.

“It is time to remove Heath’s harness and grant him a very long and well-deserved retirement among our green pastures, in the Chilterns, Buckinghamshire. Heath is currently enjoying getting to know fellow retiree Yachtsman, who recently joined us from the Metropolitan mounted branch. Our equine care team are all absolutely smitten with Heath.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeantte Allen added that Heath is a “truly stunning horse who has undertaken such valuable work during his service”.

“It is a testament to the Royal Parks that they use heavy horses for traditional land maintenance work rather than always turning to machinery,” she said.

“The more this type of initiative can be taken up the better and may also help save some of these breeds whose numbers have got alarmingly low in recent years. We are thrilled to have this gentle giant join us and wish him the happiest possible retirement. He and Yachtsman are already inseparable.”

Happy, healthy horses the aim of ‘eye-opening’ training to help combat equine obesity

Happier, healthier horses across the board was the aim of a session held as part of efforts to combat equine obesity in the UK

The Horse Trust hosted the training on 16 April as an extension of the Weigh to Win initiative, which involves giving awards to the horse or pony of the healthiest weight in showing classes across the country.

Attendees took part in interactive sessions, during which they assessed horses’ body condition scores and looked at ultrasound imaging to see where fat was deposited.

The charity’s head of research and policy Jan Rogers told H&H the event went very well, with guests from a range of societies.

“There was really good engagement,” she said, adding that the consensus was that the situation is much improved, but that there is still work to be done.

Ms Rogers said the ultrasound pictures helped convey that fat can be present and doing damage even if not visible. Delegates saw horses’ weight assessed via a tape and weighbridge, so they could see what those values looked like.

“You can use those to monitor weight changes but they don’t show where the areas of concern are,” she said, adding that the group then assessed various horses using body condition scoring, including some who were not as they seemed.

“We’ve got a retired service horse who’s a French draught, and the breed characteristically has a short neck, deep body and great depth of girth so you look and think she’s huge,” she said.

“But when you get your hands on her, you realise she’s not as big as you thought. Then we had a new intake who looks very shiny and healthy but actually has a higher body condition score, which you see when you put your hands on him and look at the fat distribution. People were amazed by the difference in what the eye sees and what’s there. It was quite eye-opening.”

Guests heard presentations on the health issues excess weight can cause, such as laminitis and strain on joints, and about the importance of language.

“It’s very easy to turn people off so it’s about finding the language that conveys the seriousness of the issue, doesn’t belittle it, but doesn’t give offence either,” Ms Rogers said. “It needs to be collaborative language, not singling people out as it’s a community problem and we all need to work on it together.”

In a group discussion that followed, Ms Rogers said “everyone agreed things have improved but there’s more to do”.

“We’ve come to normalise a high body condition score and for equine wellbeing to be improved, we need to renormalise a healthy weight,” she said. “Suggestions included some breed societies maybe incorporating some of this work in their conferences, and it was acknowledged that everyone can play a part.

“Judges and stewards can’t do it alone, vets and researchers can’t do it alone; societies and participants need to come together to help bring about positive change to horses’ wellbeing – and it’s not just showing.”

Event manager Betsy Branyan, who works on shows including the Royal Three Counties and Equifest, told H&H the training was very useful.

“It needs to be very central; one person, or one society, won’t change things alone,” she said. “My feeling is that things have got worse since judges haven’t been able to touch the animals; in showing sheep or cattle, they are felt by the judge but with horses, it isn’t part of the process, so you can’t have a real assessment of body condition, so maybe it should be part of the assessment.

“I’d love to see, not poking or prodding but something everyone can see, then the judge can say, ‘I love your horse but it’s carrying a bit too much condition.’ I think it’s worth considering.”

British Show Pony Society (BSPS) chairman Paul Cook told H&H he attended as “this is an important issue for the society”, and one that has been addressed at the BSPS judges’ conference. The BSPS has body condition scoring at its championships.

“We have appointed a British Horse Society welfare officer to our team, and body condition scoring forms one part of a wider welfare strategy and objectives for the BSPS in 2024. This includes how animals are looked after when staying away at our shows, how they are exercised and by whom and in lorry parks.

“This year Jan [Rogers] also presented to our members’ conference, which was well received.”

Mr Cook added that the animal in the healthiest condition may not win a class as it may not be the best; but it is one of many things judges must consider.

“My view is the next step is to widen the reach, as we often speak to the converted,” he said. “Engagement of our membership and producers and trainers across the industry, perhaps through The Showing Council is the next step.

“My ask is that this is within a wider welfare discussion, so members don’t see this as a one-issue problem, when we have other welfare issues to educate members on. We must however recognise the wider and sometimes devastating effects on an animal’s health if they are undernourished or obese.

“We also know this is not just a showing issue; it is a problem across the board.”

Final farewell to ‘courageous’ police horse with ‘distinctively big ears’

Tributes have been paid to a police horse with “distinctive big ears and loveable personality”, who has died in retirement aged 22.

Part-bred Irish draught Loxley began his police career with Nottinghamshire Constabulary mounted unit. When the unit disbanded in 2012, the 16.2hh “courageous” gelding was bought by Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

During his time with GMP Loxley worked in all aspects of the mounted unit, including at Manchester derby football matches, parades and demonstrations, and community events.

Loxley developed arthritis in his hocks and was unable to continue in patrol work, and in 2016 he was retired to the Horse Trust, Buckinghamshire.

“We were thrilled to give Loxley a place to retire in comfort after his service to two police forces,” said a Horse Trust spokesman.

“An amiable and gentle chap, Loxley fitted straight in with our herd of golden oldies and spent most of his time out in our fields enjoying grazing and hanging out with his friends.”

Horse Trust staff noticed Loxley was “not quite himself” and was showing signs indicative of pneumonia. He received veterinary care and although he responded to initial treatment, a scan showed that one of his lungs had several masses that were “unlikely to be treatable”.

“This meant that the only choice was to give Loxley a pain-free and comfortable passing to avoid him suffering,” said the spokesman.

The spokesman added that the charity “won’t feel the same” without Loxley’s “distinctively big ears and utterly loveable personality”.

“We find solace in knowing he is now galloping pain-free over the rainbow bridges, towards greener pastures. Rest in peace Loxley,” said the spokesman.

The rider of a Household Cavalry horse travelled with him for eight hours on their last journey together – as 12 “extraordinary” service horses made an emotional joint retirement.

The Horse Trust’s Home of Rest welcomed nine horses from the Household Cavalry, two from the police and one from the Light Dragoons on the same morning, in a “moment of heartfelt farewells as well as exciting new beginnings”.

The first three to arrive at the Buckinghamshire sanctuary were Household Cavalry horses Kilmanjaro, Jaipur and Harvester, retiring after 14, 13 and 11 years respectively.

“Kilimanjaro is fondly known as Killer, yet his nickname is no precedent for his sweet nature,” a Horse Trust spokesman said. “His previous rider accompanied him to retirement, his love for him apparent judging by the eight-hour round trip he took from Hyde Park barracks to Melton Mowbray, where the newly retired Household Cavalry horses temporarily live, and back down south to our Home of Rest, where they journeyed together one last time.”

Six more from the regiment, Odin, Legolas, Knightsbridge, Kimberly, Iago and Incognito, arrived shortly afterwards.

“Beautiful 16.3hh Kimberly was the only mare out of nine, her calm nonchalant behaviour and refined appearance winning our hearts as soon as she stepped off the lorry,” the spokesman said. “Knightsbridge stood out as the only trumpeter of the group, with a beautifully distinctive grey coat, which wasn’t so grey a couple of hours after arrival as he became acquainted with his new paddock!

“It was quite the sight witnessing the group of cavalry blacks plus Knightsbridge galloping off into acres of fresh grass after their military headcollars were removed for one final time. Their new neighbours, including Charisma and her friend Elizabeth, HRH Princess Anne’s former charger, seemingly dropped 10 years off their ages from all the excitement.”

The spokesman said that the horses had had impressive careers, taking part in major generals’ inspections, Trooping the Colour, state openings of parliament, state visits, royal weddings and The late Queen’s funeral.

A spokesman for the Household Cavalry said: “Their faithful service deserves the utmost admiration, and they are all truly the most deserving of a well-earned retirement.”

Poppy, a 17.2hh Shire, arrived the same day, from the Lancashire Police mounted section, as did former Metropolitan Police horse Yachtsman, both of whom had retired owing to lameness.

“Poppy took part in all types of police patrol work, from large football matches and events to Remembrance Day parades, which was very fitting as she was named Poppy after Armistice Day, the Platinum Jubilee parade in May 2022, leading a full military parade with a full band behind her, and much more,” said the spokesman.

“Yachtsman was described as a ‘completely and utterly lovable thug who can be boisterous and clumsy at times, and very kind, affectionate, inquisitive… with very little spatial awareness!’ according to a spokesman for the Metropolitan mounted branch.”

The last to arrive was Sky, 25, who had spent four and a half years with the Light Cavalry Honourable Artillery Company, as part of the regiment’s ceremonial team.

“Sky has been a massive part of the team here at the Light Cavalry Honourable Artillery Company, and she has a group of wonderful supporting riders that love and adore her,” a spokesman for the regiment said. “At 25 there are clear signs that she is ageing, and we are grateful to be able to give her the dignified retirement that she deserves.”

The Horse Trust spokesman said it was an emotional day.

“There wasn’t a dry eye as the horses galloped together in new pastures, marking the beginning of their retirements,” he said. “We’re overjoyed to be able to provide these magnificent animals with a well-deserved rest, plenty of carrots and of course those highly adored neck scratches.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen added: “We’re thrilled to be able to provide a blissful retirement to this amazing group of equine public servants. We have lots of new personalities to get to know and that’s hugely exciting. These horses deserve their ease after a life of public service and we are truly honoured to be able to provide that for them all.”

‘Slowly starving in agony’: rescued horses and ponies need your help

Nine horses and ponies who were “living a nightmare” as they were “slowly starving in pure agony” have taken the first steps on their journey to recovery.

H&H reported on the prosecution relating to an equine therapy centre, from which three ponies were rescued and taken to the Mare and Foal Sanctuary and nine to the Horse Trust.

The Horse Trust is now appealing for support as it rehabilitates its new residents.

“Sven, Olaf and seven other Shetlands and horses were owned by a small family business run as a community interest company, hosting pony parties and claiming to provide equine-assisted therapy sessions for vulnerable people,” a spokesman for the charity said.

“Intended to bring joy into people’s lives, no one could have expected that behind closed doors, these animals were living an awful nightmare.

“Left fending for themselves, with no food or water, these gentle souls were slowly starving and suffering in pure agony. Poor little Olaf was one of the most emaciated ponies, merely skin and bones, a far cry from the round, healthy stature he should have been. Large chunks of his coat were missing from his back and down his legs, causing him great pain and discomfort.

“His best friend Sven was so weak from neglect that he was lying lifeless on the ground, terrified and simply fighting for his life when found by a partner charity’s welfare officer.”

The Horse Trust took in Sven and Olaf, as well as Darth Vader, Walter, Spartan, Freddo, Kahlo, Sam and Shadow.

“Healing from such trauma takes time and lots of resource,” the spokesman said. “Your support is vital in ensuring they continue to receive the care and attention necessary for their wellbeing.

“Many welfare cases who have endured continual neglect, like Sven and Olaf, often have long-term health issues and are at greater risk of serious illness as time goes by. Unfortunately, the internal damage done often does not become fully known until a few years down the road and can be costly to treat and in some cases, irreparable.

“Those who have knowledge of animal behaviour also know all too well that scars like theirs run beyond the physical. This could take months or even longer.”

The charity’s CEO Jeanette Allen said the Horse Trust was pleased to be able to give the horses and ponies a permanent home.

“The herd of mini Shetlands have captured everyone’s hearts here at our sanctuary and we are working incredibly hard to make sure their trust in people continues to grow so that we can give them the best potential future,” she said. “It’s always incredibly gratifying when charities are able to work together collaboratively to get the best outcome for the animals we all care about.”

A ‘giant of a horse, with a giant heart to match’: farewell to police horse who protected The late Queen

The life of a “legendary” 18.2hh Shire police horse, who provided close security to The late Queen, has ended aged 23.

Caesar retired to the Horse Trust in 2016 from Thames Valley Police following 10 years’ “dutiful service”.

The gelding was originally named Oliver and it had been planned for him to pull carts at county shows, but his life took a “completely different turn” when he joined the force, where he was given the name Caesar.

A Horse Trust spokesman said Caesar “lived up to his new title”, and “took to police work naturally”. During his career he attended public order commitments nationwide, and he was regularly recognised.

“Caesar was often deployed to assist with various security operations involving the Government and counter-terrorism patrols at identified target locations,” said the spokesman.

“Another of his important roles each year was providing close protection security for The late Queen at Royal Ascot during the royal procession.”

PC Laura of the Thames Valley Police mounted section said she was “in awe of the huge gentle giant” when she joined the force.

“With a jet-black glossy coat and feet the size of dinner plates, his sheer size was incredibly imposing, yet underneath he was a big softie with a liking for strawberries,” she said.

“I only had the pleasure of working with this incredible horse for a couple of years but have so many fond memories of shadowing him as he looked after our then sergeant at operational events across the force.”

Laura led Caesar during his “unsaddling ceremony” at the Horse Trust in August 2016.

“With content tears in my eyes, I knew that Caesar had more than earned this relaxation after a busy career with us,” she said.

The Horse Trust spokesman said Caesar had more than seven years of “peaceful and well-deserved” retirement.

“He enjoyed continuing his celebrity lifestyle without the day job,” said the spokesman.

“Caesar was the face of our sponsorship scheme, and his many fans have supported his retirement throughout his life in Buckinghamshire. Because of his popularity, he had his own ‘Caesar Sunday’, when enthusiasts would gather at the Home of Rest for Horses to meet him.”

Caesar was put down owing to deteriorating arthritis, which had been “carefully managed” by the Horse Trust’s veterinary director.

“As Caesar’s condition deteriorated, he began to struggle to lie down and get back up, especially due to his size. The equine care team noticed that this was becoming more frequent for Caesar and after a few incidents of him needing encouragement to stand, it was decided that to protect his quality of life, the kindest thing to do was to say goodbye to Caesar for the final time,” said the spokesman.

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said everyone at the charity is “deeply saddened by the loss of the mighty Caesar”.

“This giant of a horse, with a giant heart to match, had over seven amazingly happy years here and we are so grateful and honoured to have been able to give him such a wonderful retirement,” she said.

“I’ve known him for almost as long as I’ve been here, having first met him at the Thames Valley Police stables where he was very much the section’s glorious equine leader. I fell head over heels for him on that first meeting and although it was absolutely the time to let him rest, I’m so relieved I got to say goodbye to him with a nose rub. Fences flattened and shelter found two fields away as Storm Henk devastates

Fences were flattened at The Horse Trust’s base during Storm Henk – and a field shelter was ripped from its base to land two paddocks away.

The charity experienced significant damage at its Buckinghamshire Home of Rest for Horses as a result of the storm yesterday (3 January), and has launched an appeal for support.

“Thankfully, no horses (or people) were harmed, but we are now facing very costly and labour-heavy repairs,” a spokesman for the charity said.

“The hardest hit areas were unfortunately in fields with horses in them. A tree blew over causing the fencing to collapse in our Shetland paddock, and a field shelter was ripped from its base and blew across two fields, damaging more fences.

“Despite the stress this caused to our herd, they were very brave and we are thankful to report that none of them were harmed.”

The spokesman said its equine care team acted fast to move the horses to a safer space, where they can stay until repairs are complete.

“One of our main concerns was that the fields affected contained our rescues Clifford and George in the Shetland paddock, and Ernie in another,” the spokesman said. “Due to their past, we were unsure how they would respond to the stress of a storm like this.

“As Clifford and George are still going through leading training with our knowledge and skills team and had only recently moved to the Shetland paddock, this was a big challenge for them. They were reportedly very nervous of the wind, but thanks to their training and the help of our steady and reliable former Riding for the Disabled Association Shetland Bob, the pair were safely moved.

“Without this training, Clifford and George would not have been emotionally equipped to deal with the situation which could have been very dangerous, not only for the grooms and the other Shetlands in the paddock, but for Clifford and George themselves.”

The field in which the shelter had stood was occupied by Ernie, his friend Scabby and others, but they were sheltering under trees when it blew away.

The Horse Trust CEO Jeanette Allen said: “The severity of the gusts took us by surprise with the wind warning going from yellow to amber within an hour. I am incredibly thankful to all the team for their skilled and fast response. All the groundwork training the team have done with Ernie, Georgie and Clifford allowed them to handle this difficult situation incredibly well. We are relieved that our amazing team and horses are all ok.”

The spokesman added that the challenge now is repairing the damage.

“The labour and costs that go into repairing the fences across our site will cause significant setbacks in other essential work throughout the winter.

“As a charity that relies solely on public support, The Horse Trust is urgently appealing for help, no matter how big or small, towards the repair and replacement of vital equipment across our sanctuary.”

‘We will miss him dearly’: former charger who spent 21 years in service dies aged 31

The former charger to the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment’s (HCMR) director of music, who served for 21 years before retiring to the green fields of The Horse Trust, has died aged 31.

Vainglory spent more than two decades in the Life Guards Squadron, taking part in many ceremonial events, including The Queen’s birthday parade and the Diamond Jubilee, and helped teach soldiers to ride in Windsor. He retired to The Horse Trust in 2016 to spend his twilight years at the charity in the Chiltern Hills.

He was an officer’s charger at the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton – the now Prince and Princess of Wales – and also took part in musical rides.

“During his last few years at the HCMR, he was the director of music’s charger, where he was at the front leading the band because of his great attitude and confidence,” said a spokesman for The Horse Trust.

“He excelled himself when he attended the annual HCMR summer camp in Thetford where all the horses enjoy beach rides and take part in jumping events.”

The spokesman added that Vainglory became good friends with fellow equine military veterans Union and Yeti, who were also “long in the tooth and therefore missing plenty of their own teeth”.

“They were affectionately known as ‘the gummy bears’ due to this lack of teeth and during the winter months, they often received three meals a day to supplement their diet,” said the spokesman.

“Beyond their many dinner dates, these three boys were always found hanging out together in the field and were such cheeky, lovable characters.

“Whilst Vainglory coped well over this past summer with extra mashes and the long grass, very sadly we were struggling to maintain his weight towards the end of the summer and coming into the winter.

“Knowing that during the winter months, our lovely gummy bear brigade often struggle to keep weight on, it was a concern for us that Vainglory had already taken a downhill turn before the end of the good months.

“He has also been suffering anaemia alongside his problems with maintaining his weight and then suffered a mild colic, which wasn’t in itself life-threatening but made it clear to us that all of his underlying health problems were beginning to catch up with old Vainglory and that it wouldn’t be kind to send him into the difficult winter months knowing that he would continue to struggle.

“Therefore, the heartbreaking decision was made to say goodnight to Vainglory for the final time.”

The spokesman added: “While we will miss him dearly, we hope that he is reunited with his gummy bear veterans, Union, Yeti and so many others, on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

“We have loved every moment of caring for you in your retirement and let you go knowing that you will be at peace. Goodnight, dear Vainglory.”

‘A true legend’: tributes paid to multi-talented military horse put down in retirement

A military horse with a “larger-than-life character” – and talent for showjumping, dressage and tent-pegging – has been put down in retirement owing to an acute bout of colic.

Rommel, known by his military colleagues as Bob, formerly worked for the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery then joined the Light Cavalry Honour Artillery Company in 2008. During his working career he attended every military parade, including the Lord Mayor’s Show and the British Military Tournament. He also attended various skills at arms displays, where horses perform different skills dating back to when horses were utilised in combat – one of which is tent pegging.

“Bob could turn his hoof to anything, along with all of his working talents, he also loved his jumping and dressage and spent many hours hacking in Windsor Great Park,” said a Horse Trust spokesman, who added that Bob retired to the charity in 2016 when he began struggling with leg issues.

Bob was remembered in the military for his “quirky attitude” and former HAC stable manager Caroline Quested said on one occasion he would not load following the British Military Tournament.

“We held up the dismantling of the tournament for two hours; arena surfaces and stables were all waiting to be moved to Olympia. To remove Bob from this hold up we led him from Earl’s Court through London to Knightsbridge Barracks, just in a head collar as all the tack had been sent back to the yard,” she said.

“Bob did not bat an eyelid on his trip through London, we even stopped for pictures outside tourist attractions. When we met up with our horsebox at Knightsbridge barracks, Bob proceeded to walk straight on the box. He was very smug, and you couldn’t help but laugh at him.”

The Horse Trust spokesman said Bob’s zest for life never dwindled in retirement.

“He always kept our grooms on their toes but, despite his erratic moods, he has been a pleasure to care for in his twilight years and his sense of humour often shone through,” he said.

The spokesman added that Bob recently developed acute colic which deteriorated “very rapidly”, and despite immediate veterinary treatment, it was decided the kindest thing was euthanasia.

“We were honoured to have looked after you in your golden years and we’ll miss your cheeky antics and unique zeal for life,” said the spokesman. “May you find peace and comfort across the rainbow bridge, as we find comfort knowing you are free from pain.”

Ms Quested said Bob was a “true legend and a backbone of the Light Cavalry HAC stables”.

“He made you smile every day and brought joy to so many people,” she said.

Sad farewell to failed drum horse with a ‘heart as big as his height’

The Horse Trust has paid tribute to a resident Shire who will be remembered for having a “heart as big as his height”.

Wiggins was originally bought by the Household Cavalry with the intention of becoming a drum horse for the mounted band. This role would have involved Wiggins carrying two large drums, one on each side of his rider, who would play and ride during parades.

A Horse Trust spokesman said although Wiggins initially settled into training, it became clear he was a “nervous character”, especially in traffic, and it was deemed he was not suitable for the life of a drum horse.

“The decision was made to retire Wiggins to the beautiful rolling hills here in Buckinghamshire where he could live a quieter life and avoid his arch nemesis, the double decker bus!,” said the spokesman, adding that Wiggins arrived in 2016 aged seven, making him one of the charity’s youngest retirees.

The spokesman said it was recently noticed Wiggins, now aged 14, was “having some trouble” with his back legs when getting up, and would struggle to put weight on them, before “seemingly going back to normal”.

“After this was observed by the grooms, Wiggins was booked in with our vet Nicky. Unfortunately after a thorough investigation, it was found that Wiggins was suffering from advanced arthritis and hindlimb suspensory ligament degeneration,” said the spokesman.

“The deterioration of this ligament was also impacting Wiggins joints which was likely causing him a great deal of pain. Due to the quick progression of the degeneration and that Wiggins was already struggling in light of this painful condition, it was decided that the kindest thing to do was to say goodbye.”

The spokesman added that Wiggins “won the hearts of everyone he met with his handsome appearance and loveable personality”.

“He was immensely loved by all the team here and his goofy character and gentle nature will be sorely missed,” he said.

“He leaves behind a hole just as big as his gigantic heart but we let him go knowing that he will no longer feel pain and that when he crosses over the rainbow bridge, he can continue his work to comfort those of our residents who have already left us to reside in the pastures in the sky. Sleep tight Wiggins.”

‘Your field will never be the same’: charity pony who touched lives dies aged 27

Tributes have been paid to a driving pony who “touched the hearts” of everyone he met by helping people living with disabilities make “special memories”, who has died aged 27.

Champ was a working pony for former disability charity the Magic Trust for five years, where he pulled an adapted carriage for individuals with more severe disabilities. When the Magic Trust closed in 2017, Champ retired to the Horse Trust, aged 21.

A Horse Trust spokesman said for most of 14.2hh Champ’s retirement he lived with the charity’s tallest residents including former police and military horses.

“Not deterred by their size, Champ never seemed fazed by his mammoth friends, choosing to snooze in and miss the breakfast time scuffle,” he said.

“He was firm friends with Perry and Bulowayo, two of the only horses in his herd whose withers were at the right height for a mutual grooming session. He was always known among the grooms for his relaxed nature; he was more often found asleep than awake.”

Champ had chronic arthritis, which was being closely monitored by Horse Trust vet Nicky and the charity’s grooms.

“Sadly in the last few months the grooms noticed that Champ was struggling to keep up with his friends in the field and would spend more time than usual standing alone,” said the spokesman.

“Unfortunately this was the first sign that Champ’s arthritis had begun to deteriorate, which was making it increasingly difficult for him to get around. Due to the pain and the knock-on effect this was having on his quality of life, it was decided that the kindest thing for Champ was to say our final goodbye.”

The spokesman said Champ was a “gentle soul” who allowed those with disabilities to make “special memories” during his service at the Magic Trust.

“The impact he made will never be forgotten by those whose lives he touched. We thank you Champ for your incredible service to the community and your kindness to those who you worked with,” he said.

“Your passing is a huge loss to us here at the Horse Trust and while your field will never be the same, we let you go knowing that you enjoyed your retirement here to the fullest and you may now run pain-free over the rainbow bridge.”

Horse Trust fundraising and marketing manager Jessica Tallman added that Champ was a “cherished resident”.

“He touched the hearts of everyone who had the fortune of meeting him,” she said.

‘We wish you peace’: farewell to former police horse who won award for ‘astounding bravery’

A former police horse who won an award for his “astounding bravery” during the London riots has died aged 29 after a golden retirement full of rolling, tummy rubs and galloping in the fields.

Boris, who served with the Metropolitan and Gloucestershire police, joined the former as a four-year-old and served for 20 years, retiring to The Horse Trust five years ago.

Boris passed his initial training at Imber Court with “flying colours”, and was posted to Shoreditch Police station in Hackney.

“Boris was so good he was very quickly selected to do all The Queen’s escorts, although he was so strong only a handful of officers could ride him as he would have a habit of taking off,” a Horse Trust spokesman said, adding that after several years, Boris was transferred to the stables at Kings Cross, and issued to another officer.

“During his time there he was involved in many public order incidents and policed many football matches across London, always brave and fearless, and he always he led from the front going into disorder situations,” the spokesman said. “He maintained his brave attitude and helped instil this into the other horses.”

In 2014, Boris was given the PDSA order of merit, known as the “animal OBE”, for his courage in the 2011 riots.

“Although small for a police horse, because he was so brave he led the mounted unit into the heart of the Tottenham riots after a long day of patrolling football events,” a Horse Trust spokesman said. “That day they were greeted by burning buildings, fallen debris, missiles thrown at them and foot officers in danger. On arrival, with Boris leading the way, the crowd began to back away and allowed foot officers to regain control. This astounding bravery gained Boris and the other horses the PDSA order of merit.”

Boris’s rider, Constable Paul Copeland, said he was “as brave as they come, with a lovely calm nature and willingness to work.”

Boris won another accolade in the Animals in Policing Awards 2021 for his “exemplary” service with Gloucestershire Constabulary. By that time, he was living at The Horse Trust, to which he had retired in the presence of Princess Anne, in 2018.

“The Horse Trust was honoured to have provided Boris with a well-deserved retirement after all his years loyally serving our country,” the spokesman said. “He enjoyed an incredibly peaceful retirement, during which his favourite ‘retirement’ pastimes were galloping around the pastures, rolling in the sand paddock and grabbing a good tummy rub by one of his wonderful carers.”

Boris had had navicular and arthritis for some years, which had been managed by the team to keep him comfortable and happy, the spokesman said, but the conditions progressed to a point where this was no longer possible.

“Therefore, we made the extremely heart-wrenching decision to say goodbye, accepting this was the right time for him”.

Russell Pickin, director of equine care for The Horse Trust, and former mounted branch inspector for the Met Police, said Boris was “the archetypal police horse who looked stunning, dealt bravely with any situation and gave many years of unwavering service to the Metropolitan Police and people of London.”

The spokesman added: “After all you have done for your community and those you served, we wish you peace, our brave and gallant Boris. You have touched the lives of all who knew you, both in your career and in your retirement.

“It has been both a joy and a privilege to serve you after your years of dedicated service and you will be sorely missed by everyone at The Horse Trust.”

Royal Windsor Horse Show joins the battle against equine obesity

PREVENTING weight gain is the key to battling equine obesity – but a pioneering initiative in showing is helping make positive changes, vets believe.

The Horse Trust’s Healthiest Body Condition Awards, which have been running since 2019, were presented in some showing classes at Royal Windsor Horse Show (10–14 May). Vets assessed the animals aside from the class judging and presented rosettes to those in the healthiest condition.

One of these was Jane Nixon, an experienced equine vet who is also chair of The Showing Council and an advocate for keeping equids at a healthy weight.

“I was absolutely delighted,” Dr Nixon told H&H. “It was a marked improvement from what I’d seen in the past, particularly when I was showing, between 1985 and 2010, and I think there’s true understanding now of the importance of body condition.”

Dr Nixon said she spoke to all the exhibitors in her classes, and “there was understanding and appreciation” of the importance of a healthy weight, although some found it difficult to maintain this, especially in older horses who had been overweight in the past.

She said the “overwhelming majority” in the working hunter classes were of a healthy weight, “the most pleasing being the heavyweight class”.

“This is what we’re looking for – not just one healthy horse but a large population,” she said. “How proud I was of those people, they should be ambassadors.”

Dr Nixon added that the coloured classes were “thought-provoking”, as from the ringside, she assessed many as obese, but in the ring, saw that some of the horses’ deep ribcages and large shoulders made them look fatter than they were.

“That’s not to say you needn’t worry, but those people had worked very hard,” she said. “Apart from some big crests and fat at tail-heads, I was really quite pleased.”

Dr Nixon said her two main messages are not to let horses get fat in the first place, as losing weight is then a challenge, and to keep a particular eye on crests and tail-heads as areas that reveal excess fat.

“There was one rider I spoke to and told her her horse was beautiful but overweight,” she said. “I said that in five years, I didn’t know if it would be as good if she didn’t get the weight off and she was very receptive. People were asking for information and education and that’s the big aim. It boils down to producers engaging and judges making sure they don’t place anything overweight, and commenting on that.”

Vet Lucy Penrose, who was also assessing for the awards, said most competitors were happy, and many asked for their horses’ body condition scores in the ring.

“The Welsh section C award winner, Ringside Poker Dot owned by Georgina Williams and ridden by Izzie Williams, was a fine example of a fit native, and as the only junior in the class, this prize meant the judges invited Izzie to do the lap of honour and it made their day,” she said. “Pleasingly, the riding horses had some joint class winners because there were multiple fit horses in the classes.”

Shows at which the awards will feature this summer include the Great Yorkshire and Royal Cornwall, the Hickstead Derby and Royal International meetings, and local shows.

British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) veterinary projects officer Lucy Grieve told H&H that BEVA was pleased to hear the awards were well received at Royal Windsor.

“It was encouraging to see the reduction in number and degree of overweight horses presented at these top-level showing classes,” she said. “Thanks to the continued hard work of equine charities and veterinary community in raising awareness of the risks of allowing horses to gain excessive weight, we are seeing healthier horses and ponies entering the show ring. However, there is still work to be done.

“Most of us are aware of how hard it is to lose excess weight once it has been gained, therefore we urge owners and breeders, within showing and across the board, to focus on preventing weight gain in the first place and to rethink their horse management to make equine obesity a thing of the past.”

Household Cavalry horse who flew Union Flag for cheering crowds dies aged 30 after happy retirement

A horse who once brought cheering crowds to their feet as he galloped with the Union Flag flying behind him has died aged 30 after a happy retirement.

The Horse Trust had to make the “extremely difficult decision to say goodbye” to Household Cavalry veteran Yeti, adding that it had been an honour to care for him for the last seven years.

Yeti had served with the Household Cavalry for a “magnificent” 18 years, taking part in ceremonial occasions including Trooping the Colour, state visits and The late Queen’s Life Guard.

“Yeti also travelled abroad, where he performed as part of the world-famous Household Cavalry musical ride in Europe and the Middle East,” a Horse Trust spokesman said.

“During the musical ride, four of the horses are ridden by the ‘Monkey Men’ and are trained to lie down as part of the performance and the finale includes these four horses carrying the flags of the United Kingdom. As Yeti was extremely fast, he was chosen to carry the Union Flag, and was the last horse to leave the arena at full gallop accompanied by the patriotic song Land of Hope and Glory. This prestigious accolade received many standing ovations from his adoring audiences.”

Yeti retired to the Horse Trust in April 2016 and became a favourite with staff and visitors.

“Although retired, he enjoyed going on his daily runs with Charlie and Normandy, his two field mates, and he was proud for being the fastest of the herd,” spokesman said.

Yeti developed arthritis in multiple joints, and although this was “expertly managed” by the Horse Trust, his pain levels increased recently and “despite our best efforts we were sadly not able to get him to a point where he could continue to have a good quality of life”.

“Therefore, we made the extremely difficult decision to say goodbye, accepting this was the right time for him,” the spokesman said.

“Yeti, it has been our absolute honour to serve you after all your years of service. Accepting you are no longer with us is so incredibly difficult, but we know you lived your life to the full and that you are now pain-free, galloping in your usual fast pace over the rainbow bridge with many of your former friends and colleagues.

“Rest in peace, our lovely Yeti, you have been a joy to know, love and care for, and you will be for ever missed by us all. The Yeti-shaped hole in all our hearts will take some time to heal.”

The charity’s Nicky Housby Skeggs told H&H she was lucky to work with Yeti when both were with the Household Cavalry.

“Fortunately he didn’t spend too much time in the clinic back then; he did keep us all very busy one morning when he got stuck between a couple of cars in Hyde Park!” she said.

“Later when I came to work at The Horse Trust I was delighted to find him enjoying his retirement. He suffered quite a few veterinary problems over his last few years and was a regular at the vets, thankfully most his problems were relatively minor and we did wonder whether he just enjoyed a trip to the clinic for a catch-up! In the end his arthritis caught up with him and very sadly, this time, he wasn’t able to bounce back.

“Yeti was an absolute gentleman in every sense. He was adored by all the vets who treated him, very popular with the farrier despite not having the best feet and a firm favourite of The Horse Trust team.”

‘Big-hearted’ police horse viciously attacked by dog returns to work

A police horse who sustained horrific injuries in a dog attack in a London park has returned to work after a successful recovery.

Urbane suffered wounds to his chest, torso and legs in the attack in Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets, while on duty with the mounted brand of the Met Police in March.

The gelding spent four weeks recuperating at The Horse Trust and the charity has said he “will be very welcome any time”, as he heads back to the capital.

“He immediately settled in and became a firm favourite of all the grooms due to his wonderful character and nature,” said Russ Pickin, director of equine care at The Horse Trust.

“Urbane seemed to love his time here and integrated seamlessly with the other horses he shared his field with, and they too, very quickly grew to like him.

“It was an absolute pleasure to have Urbane with us and look after him during his respite and it was with sadness but very fond memories that we saw him walk up the ramp of the police lorry ready to go back to his duties of serving London.”

The police horse has been on duty at events including Trooping the Colour, changing of the guard, The late Queen’s funeral, plus football matches and demonstrations.

“He suffered appalling injuries, and The Horse Trust was the right place for him to come to continue his recovery,” said the charity’s chief executive, Jeanette Allen.

“Like all our horses here at The Horse Trust, Urbane is a brave, big-hearted, loveable animal. He has a wonderful character and it has been a true pleasure to have got to know him over the last month.

“As we have specialist skills in caring for police horses, we were honoured to have been entrusted with Police Horse Urbane and to have helped him on his recovery journey.”

Rewarding healthy show horses: body condition awards come to Royal Windsor

Horses and ponies of a healthy weight will be celebrated in some showing classes at Royal Windsor Horse Show (11-14 May), in a move welcomed by vets.

The show and the Horse Trust are “delighted” to announce that the latter’s healthiest body condition awards will be presented in 14 classes.

H&H has reported on the awards, which have run at other major shows to “raise awareness of the importance of keeping all horses at a healthy weight”.

In the selected classes, horses and ponies will be assessed by experienced equine vets Lucy Penrose and Jane Nixon.

“The awards are a great initiative, rewarding horses who are in a healthy body condition in the ring,” Ms Penrose said. “I am happy to support these awards at Royal Windsor because I believe they are, alongside work from societies, making a positive influence in competing horses’ welfare.”

H&H reported that the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) was concerned about overweight horses and ponies competing at Windsor 2022, but that it was hoped it would be a catalyst for change.

BEVA veterinary projects officer Lucy Grieve told H&H the association was pleased to see the show supporting “this excellent initiative”.

“While obesity is a serious issue across the UK equine population, it has been particularly disheartening to see overweight show horses being celebrated, despite the potentially serious health risks,” she said. “It’s time to call out those who continue to ignore the proven facts, to satisfy their own pleasure. There have been many equine charity initiatives and a lot of vets’ blood, sweat and tears devoted to educating owners about the debilitating consequences of horses’ carrying excess weight, especially the increased susceptibility to laminitis, which can be fatal.

“We would really like to see all sports and classes adopt this approach to recognising that healthy body condition is a must. Whether it is a cob, a ‘good doer’ or a retired companion, all horses and ponies rely on owners and carers to keep them at a healthy weight. Allowing an animal to become overweight to the point its life is at risk is no less cruel or neglectful than failing to feed it such that it is underweight and malnourished.

“Purportedly a nation of horse lovers, it is surely the duty of every one of us in the equine sector to help prevent unnecessary pain and suffering; we must all work together to ensure we acknowledge and prioritise health over appearances, without exception.”

Producer Vicky Smith, who will be competing a string of horses at Windsor, told H&H she supports the initiative.

“As a judge and competitor, I think it’s a great idea,” she said. “I think a lot of people feel pressure to have extra condition on their horses to fit in certain classes. I used to have eventers and my show horses are treated like them; they’re fit and have a varied routine. For me, it’s important to have balance; looking in condition, with good topline, and being fit and strong with muscle tone. It’s important people realise the difference between fit and fat and important they’re made aware. The societies do a great job; at judges’ conferences they’re clear fat horses should be penalised, and Windsor doing this can only be positive.”

Dr Nixon, who is also chair of the Showing Council and has spoken about the dangers of equine obesity, said: “The awards are important to me because they are working to address the serious problem of obesity in some show horses. I believe all horses deserve to be healthy and happy. I believe this program is making a real difference in the lives of some show horses, and I am proud to support it.”

Competitors at the show will also be able to take advantage of education, advice and resources about keeping horses and ponies at a healthy weight.

Jan Rogers, head of research and policy at the Horse Trust, said: “We get very upset by seeing photos of underweight horses in the media, but in reality, far more horses are obese than are underweight. This is worrying for vets who are finding that they must treat these horses with serious health conditions like equine metabolic syndrome and laminitis. People’s perceptions of what is a healthy weight have shifted towards the higher body condition scores. We would like to help to reset this balance.”

A spokesman for Royal Windsor added: “The welfare of horses participating at Royal Windsor is of paramount importance and we are delighted to welcome the Horse Trust’s healthiest body condition awards initiative to the show”.

‘Big-hearted’ police horse recovering at charity after London dog attack

A police horse who was injured in a vicious dog attack in a London park has moved to the Horse Trust to continue his recovery.

Urbane sustained multiple wounds to his chest, torso and legs when he was attacked in Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets, while on duty in March.

He is recovering at the Buckinghamshire charity; the plan is for him to spend the next four to six weeks there, and the aim is for him to return to active service.

“He suffered appalling injuries, and the Horse Trust is the right place for him to come to continue his recovery, where he will deservedly receive our world-leading veterinary care and respite,” said the charity’s chief executive, Jeanette Allen.

“Like all our horses here at the Horse Trust, Urbane is a brave, big-hearted, loveable animal. He has a wonderful character and is incredibly reliable.

“As we have specialist skills in caring for police horses, we are honoured to be entrusted with Police Horse Urbane’s ongoing recovery, which will be administered with expert care by our staff and volunteers and supported by kind donations from the public.”

Ms Allen added that Urbane has “served Londoners faultlessly” at events including Trooping the Colour, changing of the guard and The late Queen’s funeral, and has “kept the public safe” when on duty at football matches and demonstrations.

Despite the injuries Urbane suffered from the dog who attacked him, he has already been pictured befriending his vet’s Labrador, and it is hoped the horse will make a complete recovery, both psychologically and physically.

“We were all shocked and devastated by the dog attack on Police Horse Urbane, who is a remarkably dependable horse with a playful side to his character,” said Sgt Carly Harber, of the Metropolitan Police mounted section.

“We are so grateful to the Horse Trust for offering respite to this magnificent member of our equine team, and we will be watching his recovery with great affection and hope.”

‘Always happy and singing’: vocal police horse retired after 10 years’ service

A much-loved police horse who was “always happy” and would “whinny to say hello” has retired after 10 years’ service.

Lancaster joined Lancashire Constabulary’s mounted unit in 2013, as a five-year-old. During his career he took part in events across the country, and owing to his name he was a “regular” at the annual Lancaster Castle shield-hanging ceremony.

“He went to countless large football matches, and a particularly memorable English Defence League demonstration on Preston Flag Market, where he was right in the middle of it all,” said a spokesman for the force.

“He helped many riders pass their intermediate riding course in both the flat and jumping phases; he could be quite a challenging ride at times but was so rewarding when it all came together.”

The spokesman said Lancaster, who was known on the yard as Tommy, “had the honour” of being featured on the 2022 Murphy’s Army Purple Poppy Campaign, helping raise money for chosen charities.

“He featured on poppy wreaths and leaflets wearing his purple poppy with pride,” he said.

“He has always been a vocal boy, always happy and singing. Not an hour goes by where you don’t hear a whinny from him, for no reason other than just to say hello, and that is what we will miss most about him.”

Lancaster was retired from duty aged 15 owing to his PPID (Cushing’s). The spokesman said it was an “emotional day” as he went through the gates for the final time to make his way to the Horse Trust this week.

“Farewell Lancaster, thank you for all your service and say hello to your old friends Caton, Belthorn, Darwen, Sawley, Silverdale, Rivington, Elswick and Nelson who are all enjoying their retirement at the Horse Trust,” he said.

Heartbreak as retired Household Cavalry mare with a ‘zest for life’ put down

Tributes have been paid to a 20-year-old mare with a “zest for life” who served in the Household Cavalry for nine years.

During her career Luna was used for The late Queen’s Life Guard duties and state occasions, including The Queen’s birthday parade, the Lord Mayor’s Show and the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 2011.

In 2019 Luna retired to the Horse Trust owing to lameness issues.

“She had a true zest for life and was much loved for her fun and feisty streak which always kept the grooms on their toes,” said a Horse Trust spokesman.

“During her retirement she also formed an incredibly sweet bond with retired Metropolitan Police horse, Orla. The two became inseparable and certainly brought out the cheeky side in each other. One of their well-known traditions was to do an early morning sprint, always ensuring they were first to the gate for the morning feeds.”

The spokesman said the Horse Trust team was “devastated” when Luna developed a “very nasty” hoof abscess and the infection tracked up her leg, causing a lot of pain.

“Despite intensive veterinary treatment, including an epidural, we were unable to get the infection under control and keep her comfortable,” he said.

“It was then that the team had to make the extremely difficult decision that morning to say goodbye to our dear friend in the safety and loving care of the equine care team.”

The spokesman added that Luna had a “truly wonderful” retirement.

“Luna, you were a truly beautiful spirit, who will be desperately missed by all who knew you and by those you served,” he said.

“Thank you for giving us four magical years with you and for your dedicated service while with the Household Cavalry. Though our hearts are breaking from the loss, we take comfort in knowing you are galloping fast and free over that rainbow bridge.”

‘One in a million’: rescued Spindles Farm yearling’s journey to showing stardom

A yearling who was part of “one of the most horrific cases of animal cruelty in the UK” has gone on to become a “one in a million” pony – and last year made his London International Horse Show debut.

In 2008 Dazzle was one of more than 100 equines rescued from Spindles Farm, in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. The case was one of the largest equine rescues in the UK, involving a number of welfare charities, who took in animals. There were 32 equines found dead at the scene.

The Horse Trust took in 14 horses and ponies, including yearling Dazzle, who was underweight and suffering from a salmonella infection. He was rehabilitated, and when he was old enough he began his training, during which time he was described by charity staff as “an absolute sweetheart”.

Dazzle found a home with Claire and her son Tom, who “jumped at the chance” to have him. Since then he has gone from “strength to strength”. Now 16, Dazzle has competed at novice level dressage and represented the Old Berkeley Hunt branch of the Pony Club in team competitions with Tom. The pair were second in the Senior Showing and Dressage (SSADL) veteran class at Royal Windsor and at the SSADL championships the pair qualified for the 2022 London International Horse Show, where they finished 12th.

The 2023 season is off to a “flying start”, with Tom and Dazzle qualifying for the Pony Club spring festival (11-12 February).

“If I had £1 for every time someone asked if they could have him, I would be a millionaire!” said Claire.

“He’s such a saint; he never puts a foot wrong, he’s so safe to hack and foot-perfect. Dazzle is truly a one in a million horse and considering his extremely neglected start, it’s amazing how much he gives.”

A Horse Trust spokesman said prior to joining Claire and Tom, Dazzle was in the care of another family and was particularly loved by his “dad” Jerry.

“When Jerry unfortunately became extremely poorly, he had one last wish to see his old friend Dazzle. Claire, knowing what a special horse Dazzle is and fully aware of the therapeutic benefits horses have on people, decided the right and best thing to do would be to hack the two hours to this gentleman’s home to grant him this final wish,” he said.

“They rode through the garden to the window where Jerry was waiting. They didn’t know then, but this would be the last time he was able to stand, he put that final burst of energy into saying goodbye to this truly special horse that has given so much to so many.”

The spokesman added the charity is “honoured” to have been part of Dazzle’s journey.

“It has been amazing to see Dazzle continue to spread his wings with Claire and Tom. It goes to show what dedicated time, specialist care, love and patience can really do for rescue ponies,” he said.
