Animal welfare is ‘no place for legal loopholes’: MPs debate animal abuse register and automatic lifetime bans

A petition calling for a public register of animal abusers and automatic lifetime bans has been debated in parliament.

On 29 June, MPs discussed the petition started by cleaner and social media influencer Bea Elton, which almost 240,000 people have signed since its launch on 12 March. For petitions to be considered for debate, they must reach 100,000 signatures in six months.

Burton and Uttoxeter MP Jacob Collier said the number of people who had signed Ms Elton’s petition in just three months illustrated “the depth of feeling across our country” around animal abuse.

“That feeling, together with the expert opinion of organisations such as the RSPCA, indicates that the current provisions against animal abuse are not adequate,” he said.

But Mr Burton added that automatic lifetime bans for all who abuse animals “appears to be a disproportionate response” and a public register is “similarly unsuitable”. H&H reported concerns from equine welfare charities around a public register owing to the risk of “vigilante behaviour” (news, 4 June).

Cambourne and Redruth MP Perran Moon called on the Government to close the loophole whereby a banned owner can give animals to their spouse.

Doncaster East and Isle of Axholme MP Lee Pitcher agreed, adding: “there is no place for legal loopholes like that in our country”.

“The Government has referred to the police national computer and to existing arrangements for information sharing. I recognise that there are important safeguards around personal information and data protection that we must be aware of, but a record held somewhere in the system is not the same as a practical safeguarding tool that can stop a banned person acquiring another animal,” he said.

“That is the point behind the petition and it is a point that we should take very seriously.”

Newly appointed Defra minister Stephen Morgan said the Government published its animal welfare strategy for England in December, which includes “practical action to promote sensible, responsible pet ownership”. This strategy also includes plans for a consultation on licensing rescue and rehoming centres, which is still to be actioned.

“That matters, because many welfare problems begin long before prosecution is brought. They can start with poor breeding, poor socialisation, lack of knowledge or owners unable to meet an animal’s needs,” he said. “By addressing those causes earlier, we can reduce the risk of animal suffering and reduce pressure on enforcement bodies later on.”

He said courts have the power to impose lifetime bans where appropriate – and “it is right that they retain the discretion to do so”.

“Although we recognise the good intention behind the calls for a public register, the risks outweigh the benefits. Targeted disclosure remains the most effective approach. We are continuing to strengthen enforcement by supporting local authorities on how to use the tools available to them more effectively,” he said.

Blue Cross head of public affairs Becky Thwaites told H&H the debate had “some interesting and useful contributions” – and the charity supports a national register searchable by enforcement agencies and charities.

“Issues around animal welfare are not debated as often as we would like at Westminster so this was a welcome opportunity for MPs to put their views to the Defra minister,” she said. “The one disappointment was the minister provided no timeframe for the consultations promised in the Government’s animal welfare strategy – we need more clarity on that.”

Ms Thwaites added that as the 2006 Animal Welfare Act reaches its 20th anniversary, it is the “right moment for a comprehensive review”.

“This should include strengthening how disqualification orders are monitored and enforced, alongside serious consideration of introducing an animal offenders register,” she said.

RSPCA head of public affairs David Bowles told H&H the number of signatures the petition has had “demonstrates how passionate people feel about justice for animals”.

“We know many equine owners will be among those urging the UK Government to act,” he said.

“Sadly, despite the animal welfare laws the RSPCA helped to put into place, cruelty still happens too often, and our inspectors and rescuers see firsthand the reality of this on a daily basis.”

Mr Bowles said establishing an animal abuse register is an “emotive issue”.

“Details of convictions and disqualification orders under the Animal Welfare Act are stored on the Police National Computer, but this is not open to non-police personnel to see for data protection purposes, and to avoid vigilante action,” he said.

“The current framework poses a significant challenge; even though courts can disqualify individuals from ownership, there is currently no central system for rescue centres, charities or private individuals, including breeders, pet shops, or animal care companies, to check whether someone is banned from keeping animals before selling or rehoming an animal, or employing someone to care for animals.

“That’s why the RSPCA is working with governments and other stakeholders for a transparent system that enables identification by appropriate authorities of those previously convicted of an animal offence.

“Gaps also extend to local authorities who grant licenses to animal businesses. While legislation already states that people convicted of animal cruelty are ineligible to run certain animal-related businesses – knowledge to enforce these rules is key.”

Mr Bowles added that resourcing for local authorities will “need to remain a discussion point”, and said many are ”already under pressure” enforcing legislation such as the Control of Horses Act.

“We must find a system that helps everyone ensure that disqualified abusers cannot bypass the law and own, get access to or work with animals – while respecting that information is only provided appropriately to selected enforcers, to prevent vigilante and other anti-social actions,” he said.

“Individuals banned from keeping animals by courts are often publicised in the media and the current legal framework highlights why it is important that anyone suspecting an individual to be breaching or evading any imposed bans should report this to the police or other relevant authorities.”

Extended grief after the loss of an animal can affect people as much as a human bereavement, research shows

Experiencing extended and extreme grief following the death of a pet can affect some people as much as a human bereavement, a study has shown.

The paper, published in scientific journal Plos One, has looked at whether prolonged grief disorder (PGD) can occur following the death of a pet. The psychiatric condition, of which symptoms include intense emotional pain, feelings of guilt or sorrow and difficulty of accepting the loss, may only be diagnosed if someone is still experiencing these feelings 12 months after a human bereavement – but researchers of Maynooth University, Ireland, said not including pets in the criteria could be “significantly misguided”.

Data was collected from 975 UK adults, who answered questions on their bereavement experiences – including which had caused them the most distress. Of those who had lost both a human and a pet, 21% said the death of the pet was the most distressing.

Of all of the respondents, 84 people met diagnostic requirements for PGD; 7.5% following the death of a pet; similar to the rates of those who met the criteria following the loss of a close friend (7.8%), a grandparent, cousin or aunt/uncle (8.3%) or sibling (8.9%).

The researchers said the results show people can experience “clinically relevant levels of grief after the death of a pet” and that PGD symptoms “manifest in the same way regardless of the species of the deceased”.

Researcher Philip Hyland highlighted that the vast majority of people who suffer a bereavement adjust and cope, but told H&H that of the small percentage of people who develop PGD, one factor can be the closeness of the relationship to the deceased; the condition is seen more following the death of children or spouses.

“When that relationship is lost it affects the person enormously, because of the closeness but also the void that’s left day to day. If you think about that in terms of pets, those attachments are incredibly close and people feel responsible for them, and so when that’s gone that’s very hard to adjust to,” said Professor Hyland, adding that he believes evidence is growing for pets to be included in PGD guidelines.

“Human relationships are complicated, people can invariably argue or betray each other – but relationships with animals are just so pure, they’re the most perfect distillation of love and positive relationship that I think you can find.

“If somebody is suffering there are treatments available, and the idea that they either wouldn’t seek them or they wouldn’t be provided, just because they lost an animal and not a human is awful. Why shouldn’t we offer people help?”

There were limitations to the research in that animal owners “face unique challenges” such as euthanasia decisions – and Professor Hyland believes this would be an area to study.

“We know from humans that the cause of death can affect the likelihood of developing PGD,” he said.

“With pets and euthanasia, owners take advice from vets and other people, but ultimately they have to make a decision to end their pet’s life. They can experience guilt and shame or question if they made the right decision, and I wonder to what extent that unique position might influence their likelihood of developing PGD.”

Professor Hyland said there could be scope to include animals’ being included by employers who allow staff leave after family bereavements.

“Whether someone has lost a person or an animal, if they’re suffering or in tremendous distress why wouldn’t we try to support them?” he said.

Equine and small-animal welfare charity Blue Cross offers support for owners through its free pet loss support service.

“People often struggle to talk about their emotions when it involves the loss of a beloved animal – even with family and friends,” Blue Cross pet loss support manager Annalisa de Cateret told H&H.

“For many, their pets and horses are truly part of the family, and for some their only family. Losing them can be a devastating, confusing and lonely experience so it’s good that this topic is being looked into and spoken about more.”

Equine welfare charities reflect on the challenges of 2025 – as the number of owners giving up their horses increases

Financial challenges continue for horse owners, as equine welfare charities come under pressure too.

As 2025 comes to a close, charities have reflected on the year, citing rising costs across the board as an ongoing concern.

World Horse Welfare chief field officer Claire Gordon told H&H it had been a “challenging year”, exacerbated by the summer drought and its impact on forage yields.

“Charities are not immune from these challenges and the worrying impact we’re starting to feel is the resilience of the welfare sector shrinking – at a time when demand for our services is increasing,” she said.

“We’ve seen charities having to shut some of their centres, make redundancies, close to new intakes or decrease stocking levels to reduce running costs. Sadly, we’ve lost some charities who have closed permanently, finding the ever-increasing costs unsustainable.”

World Horse Welfare had rehomed 302 equines and taken in 200 by 30 November. Of the charity’s 2,200-plus rehomed horses and ponies, 155 were returned this year.

Ms Gordon reported that welfare cases involving large numbers of horses “continue to further deplete” rescue centres’ capacity.

“Some of the big operations have involved horses who have been sold or passed on by their owners to unknown fates, many later rescued from dealers and hoarding situations,” she said.

“We’ve also seen cases where owners and breeders have passed away or become very ill with no succession plan, leaving charities to pick up the pieces.”

This year Blue Cross launched a strategy, “designed to support private horse owners in times of need”. The charity took in 434 equines compared to 212 in 2024, the majority from private homes.

“There are many reasons owners are reluctantly having to relinquish their horses, but financial strain is the most common. Rising veterinary costs, combined with this year’s sharp increases in hay and straw prices, have placed significant pressure on households,” a Blue Cross spokesperson told H&H.

“To meet demand, the charity brings horses in for rehabilitation and rehoming, while also expanding its Home Direct scheme, which allows horses to remain in their homes while Blue Cross helps match them with new owners.”

Blue Cross reported a “dip” in rehoming figures, from 250 last year to 231 this year – thought to be “linked to the rising costs of hay, feed and winter care”.

By 30 November, Redwings had taken in 51 equines, down from 98 last year.

“While this is a big drop on recent years, this is unfortunately all the space we’ve had available. With around 1,200 existing residents, we must ensure we don’t compromise their continuing care over new intakes, and that has meant space has been very limited this year,” Redwings chief executive Lynn Cutress told H&H.

Redwings rehomed 93 horses and ponies by the end of November, compared to 88 in 2024.

“We are pleased these numbers have held steady and encourage anyone looking to take on a horse to consider Redwings, or another equine charity,” said Ms Cutress.

The RSPCA admitted 546 equines by 30 November and rehomed more than 200.

“2025 has been a challenging year for the RSPCA and other equine charities, as rising costs for hay, veterinary care and other essentials have driven up the cost of caring for horses. This comes at a time when the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact horse carers,” said RSPCA equine expert Mark Kennedy.

Always the bridesmaid: rescued cob who watched others be rehomed stars at her new owner’s wedding

A rescued cob who may have felt she was always the bridesmaid as she repeatedly missed out on rehoming has performed just that duty for her new, loving owner.

Pumpkin, who was rescued in 2023 aged 15, spent more than 500 days at Blue Cross’s Burford rehoming centre “watching other horses get rehomed while she waited patiently for someone to fall in love with her”.

But last Christmas, Natalie King contacted the charity as her cob Domino had lost his best friend and was “struggling” on his own.

“Domino was absolutely miserable – he needed a friend and fast,” Natalie said. “I contacted Blue Cross and they matched us with Pumpkin who was looking for a home as a non-ridden companion. ‘She’s super-cool and just happy to be involved!’ they told me. Perfect!”

Natalie lives on 11 acres with a sheep, two pigmy goats and Domino, and plenty of room for Pumpkin.

“When they told me how long she’d been in their care, my heart went out to her,” Natalie said.

“Five days later Pumpkin arrived. I put her next door to Domino and after a quarantine period, they joined each other in the paddock. Happy days – they really liked each other. I was very relieved it was all so easy and that Domino was content again.”

Natalie said Pumpkin is an “angel pony”, who has not put a hoof wrong.

“When I call her name from the paddock gate, she trots over to me,” she said. “I’ve had Domino 15 years and he’s never once come when called! Pumpkin is so easy-going and polite. She’s a joy to have around.”

A few months later, Blue Cross Burford’s Bradley Moore-Taylor went to visit Pumpkin and Natalie, and “realising how happy Pumpkin was”, asked Natalie whether she would like to own her.

“And that wasn’t the only ‘Yes’ Natalie was saying,” a Blue Cross spokesperson said. “The following week she got married; Pumpkin’s legal ownership paperwork arrived the day before the wedding.”

Natalie explained that she and her husband Ben married in the village church and had the reception at home.

“The horses were very much part of the day, watching the goings-on from the paddock, and Pumpkin becoming officially mine just made it more special,” she said.

“Then my bridesmaid Siân said: ‘Pumpkin wondered if she could be a bridesmaid too.’ Sian had got her bridesmaid’s dress taken up and used the spare fabric to tie a bow in Pumpkin’s forelock.

“It was such a lovely gesture and Pumpkin looked gorgeous. So Siân and I had some official wedding photos taken with Pumpkin – girls together. Then my husband Ben and I had pictures with Pumpkin, Domino and ex-racehorse Benji (Old Beginnings), who had returned home from his retraining yard. The boys love their little sister!”

Elderly mare ‘overlooked for her looks and age’ gets second chance in loving home

An elderly mare who had been “overlooked for her unique looks and age” has started her new life in a loving home.

Autumn came into the care of the Blue Cross rehoming centre in Burford in January 2024 after her owner was prosecuted by the RSPCA for neglect.

A Blue Cross spokesperson said Autumn, now 23, was found in a field in “very poor body condition with rain scald, and her spine, ribs and shoulders clearly visible through winter coat”.

Following the prosecution, Autumn joined Blue Cross to find the “loving new home she deserved”.

“Autumn was understandably a bit nervous when she arrived in our care. She was more people-oriented and not very horse-oriented initially – she didn’t know how to be a horse, and it’s clear she had spent more time around people than other horses,” said Lauren Bush, adoptions coordinator at the Blue Cross Burford centre.

“She was a favourite here as she’s such a sweet mare, and we especially liked the way her blaze falls, so it makes her face look wonky. She needed a lot of physiotherapy from the team as she was tight in her back. This could be due to poor breeding or could have been caused if she was used in harness in her previous home. The team used carrot stretches along with plenty of massages, stretches and exercises to help.”

After six months Autumn was transferred to a volunteer foster yard where she “blossomed” in a home environment with other horses.

“She thrived on routine and being in a good home environment in her foster yard but despite her sweet personality, Autumn was overlooked as a companion, most likely due to her size and age,” said Lauren.

This changed when Angharad Hadley-Stone and her sister Rhinannon were looking for a companion horse.

“We originally rehomed Autumn as we were looking for a quiet companion for our other older mare Perdy after she sadly lost her two field mates,” said Miss Stone.

“Autumn needed some time and space to settle but since she’s found her feet she’s really come out of her shell, and she is so lovely to have around. She is such a sweet-natured girl and watching her cheeky personality come out has been so nice to see. Autumn and Perdy have become two peas in a pod and we’re so grateful we could offer Autumn a place to call home with us.”

RSPCA head equine vet Roxane Kirton added that the charity is “delighted” to hear that Autumn has found a loving home.

“We are grateful to the team at Blue Cross for taking such wonderful care of her since her rescue,” said Ms Kirton.

“Her story is a great example of partnership working and how we can all do our bit for every kind, by working together for animal welfare.”

Rider whose horse fell on her in a ditch backs new ‘Blue Cross Code’ road safety campaign

A rider who ended up in a ditch under her horse after he was spooked by a car passing too fast is backing a new road safety campaign.

Alyson Lock said she and her part-bred thoroughbred Mylo were lucky not to have been more badly hurt. But not everyone is, and it is incidents such as this that inspired welfare charity Blue Cross to launch its “Blue Cross Code”.

Mylo jumped sideways into the ditch in Suffolk two years ago when a driver ignored Alyson’s repeated pleas to slow down. She ruptured a hamstring in the fall and Mylo hurt his back but both have fully recovered.

“We were lucky that day,” she said. “But not everyone is. Greater awareness for both riders and drivers is vital to help stop more accidents like mine.”

The Blue Cross Code, reminiscent of the Green Cross Code road safety tips for pedestrians, is a guide that “offers essential safety tips for both horse riders and drivers on sharing the road responsibly”.

TV presenter Ben Fogle, who has had “frightening and unacceptable” near-misses riding on the roads, is backing the campaign.

“The Blue Cross Code is a vital initiative, helping to educate both drivers and riders on how to safely share the road,” he said. “With greater awareness, we can prevent accidents and protect lives – both human and animal.”

The launch of the code comes before the May school half-term holiday. Blue Cross horse team development lead Ruth Court said: “With holiday traffic increasing, we want to remind everyone that even a small misjudgment around a horse can have devastating consequences. This new guidance helps both drivers and riders take practical steps to stay safe.”

The code is available online.

The advice for drivers includes a reminder of the changes to the Highway Code on passing horses safely, and highlights the need for vigilance and patience. The tips for riders include the importance of wearing high-vis gear and appropriate training of horses.

Making memories: foal of mare rescued from Wellingborough thrives as child’s loved pony

The foal of a mare who was rescued in a “sorry state” and terrified of people is thriving and “making amazing memories” as a child’s pony in her forever home.

Clover, formerly known as Rainbow, was born to Dove, one of 43 ponies rescued from flooded fields in Wellingborough in a multi-agency operation nearly five years ago.

H&H reported on the major rescue in 2020; the ponies, mainly mares and foals, were in poor condition and much of the land was under water. Blue Cross took in 11 of them, whom they named after rivers as they were rescued from floods by the river Nene.

When Blythe, Arun, Dove, Soar, Tweed, Eden, Nidd, Ribble, Hipper, Cole and Nene arrived at Blue Cross, a spokesperson for the charity said, they were all blood-tested and screened for strangles.

“This was no mean feat because the ponies were unhandled and fearful,” she added.

“They were particularly worried about Dove, who was in a sorry state, petrified of human contact and heavily in foal, so they ran a full blood profile on her just to be sure. Luckily, she had no significant health issues, but they recognised she needed more training so they could provide the necessary veterinary care for her and her foal when the time came.”

The spokesperson said some of the ponies were emaciated and “riddled with lice”. They were treated, wormed and vaccinated and as “it appeared that none of them had had any foot care or dental work in their lifetimes, these procedures were carried out as soon as it was safe to do so”.

Dove gave birth to a foal, Rainbow, who “grew into a lovely filly”. Once she was weaned, the mare went to a new private home as a companion, “which is perfect for her”. Rainbow went on a private short-term loan until she was four, when she came back to Blue Cross to be rehomed permanently as a riding pony.

“In January 2025, Rainbow found her new forever home with a loving family who were wanting to take her through the backing process for their children, and have renamed her Clover,” the spokesperson said.

“Clover’s new home fell in love with her character and she has a lovely bond with their daughter, who will be riding her. Clover is showing she will be a great child’s riding pony. Her new owner, Laura Jane, said: ‘Clover has fitted in extremely well. She loves her new best friend Aria and is making loads of amazing memories.’”

Blue Cross horse adoptions coordinator Verity Anderton-Johnson said she was there when Rainbow was born.

“To see the little foal whose mum came to us extremely nervous and in poor condition, to now being a great child’s pony and thriving in her new home is just wonderful and makes our job so rewarding.”

‘The perfect home’: mare rescued dreadlocked and lice-ridden with yearling at foot has bright future

A mare rescued with a “dreadlocked” mane, an “incredibly high” worm burden and her lice-ridden yearling at foot has found her perfect home.

Blue Cross took in Lemon in December 2023, along with her foal Babyccino, who was a year old.

“She had half a mane and what she did have was tangled up and a coat that was so thick, it had made dreadlocks throughout,” a spokesperson for the charity said.

“She was lethargic and depressed with an incredibly high worm burden. Her foal had a better body condition score but was also incredibly knotty with a large worm burden. They had lice and were very nervous of people so needed work on building trust with them.”

Mother and son were treated for lice and put on an appropriate worm control plan, as well as management to increase their body condition safely.

“Lemon was trained using clicker training to encourage her to gain confidence with people,” the spokesperson said. “Once her confidence improved, the team removed all the knots in her mane and gave her a thorough groom. They saw the farrier after some basic leg handling and had their long feet trimmed to a much more acceptable length to allow more time for training before trimming them properly.”

Once Lemon and Babyccino gained weight and their handling improved, the charity started the weaning process as Babyccino was over a year old.

“This was a very smooth and easy process as Babyccino had made lots of new friends of a similar age,” the spokesperson said.

Once he was weaned, the charity looked for a new home for Lemon.

“In August this year, a lovely home applied for her to be a companion to two mares and it was the perfect match for her,” the spokesperson said. “Lemon has been in that home since August and is doing really well. She is loving all the attention she is getting.”

“It is always heartbreaking to see ponies like Lemon arrive at the centre in such poor condition and nervous of people, but with time and effort, it is so rewarding to be able to nurture them back to health and happiness, before sending them off to their new family,” she said. “We know that Lemon will have a wonderful first Christmas at home, and I’m sure will be spoilt with lots of presents and love!”

Struggling owners urged to rehome horses now rather than wait for winter

Two leading charities are urging struggling owners to rehome horses now – to avoid a “winter welfare crisis”.

In the wake of a National Equine Welfare Council survey showing the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on horse owners, World Horse Welfare and Blue Cross have encouraged people to consider rehoming over the summer.

The survey showed that more than 7,000 horse-owning households could be in this position, and the charities have urged them to act now rather than wait till winter, when conditions will be harder and more horses may be in need of new homes.

“Rehoming your horse during the summer gives both the horse and the new owner the best chance of a smooth transition,” said World Horse Welfare deputy chief executive Tony Tyler. “Waiting until winter can be far more difficult for everyone involved, and this is the main time of year people decide to rehome their horses, so there will be far more competition for homes just at the time it becomes much harder to care for your horses. We know many people understandably hang on to their horses for as long as possible, but it may be in everyone’s best interest to plan ahead and start the process now.”

The survey found that a “significant number” of owners are considering rehoming owing to the increased cost of essentials from livery to feed.

Blue Cross horse welfare manager Ruth Court said: “Our priority is always the welfare of the horses. With 98% of concerned owners worrying about their financial situation regarding horse care over the next year, we strongly encourage anyone struggling to seek advice and consider rehoming now before the winter.

“We and World Horse Welfare offer advice lines where you can talk in confidence to a kind and understanding member of our teams, and they will discuss options with you. It’s so important to do this before it is too late and the horse has started to suffer and stands the risk of becoming a welfare case.”

H&H has put collated further advice for horse owners who can no longer afford to keep their horse.

‘Anyone who cares for horses’ asked for views on cost-of-living crisis

Equine welfare charities have launched a new survey to find out if the cost-of-living crisis has worsened for owners over the last 12 months.

The survey is a follow-up to the 2023 National Equine Welfare Committee (NEWC) survey, which received 8,000 responses. Findings included that almost one in five participants said they are having to consider difficult decisions such as sale, sharing or euthanasia of their horses, owing to rising costs.

The new survey, launched yesterday (16 January) has been developed by World Horse Welfare with support from NEWC partner organisations Redwings, Blue Cross, the British Horse Society, Bransby Horses, and Oak Tree Animals Charity

“Anyone who cares for horses will be able to contribute to an understanding of how increased costs are affecting their ability to care for their animals, and this information will feed into the development of targeted support for those most in need and help prevent welfare issues arising,” said a spokesman for the project.

Rebecca Boulert, World Horse Welfare education officer, said it is “imperative” for charities dealing with cases where individuals are unable to care for their horses because of financial reasons, to understand if the situation has worsened over the last 12 months.

“We know from last year’s research that many owners were just about coping, and all possible cost savings had already been made, but that left little room for a further squeeze on purses,” she said.

“This year’s survey aims to show whether things have stabilised, improved or deteriorated, allowing us to plan and act accordingly. We really hope as many horse owners as possible engage with the research and complete the survey, regardless of whether or not they were involved in last year’s project.”

A tailored version of the survey targeting charities and other equestrian rescue centres will run concurrently to find out how the continuing cost-of-living crisis is affecting these organisations. Those involved will be contacted directly by NEWC to take part.

The anonymised results from the surveys will be made public to “highlight any challenges and concerns that owners are facing”, and their potential impact on equine welfare. The results will also be shared with the UK Government, devolved administrations, and local authorities to help inform their understanding of the situation, as well as policy decisions, including “potential financial support for those most in need”.

Abandoned pony’s future goes from bleak to bright: ‘I’m so glad we’ve given him a chance’

A native pony abandoned in a field following the death of his owner now has a bright future ahead of him and has brought much-needed companionship to an elderly bereaved horse.

Barley arrived in Blue Cross care after he was found in a farmer’s field in Somerset. Although he was microchipped, his original owner had died.

The 14-year-old had to be gelded, and the charity then started the education that would allow him to find his new home.

The team spent almost a year building Barley’s confidence and the pony started to thrive.

“Barley was initially highly aroused and stressed by other horses, he would spend hours pacing the fence line just to be able to see and hear other horses,” said Blue Cross horse rehoming coordinator Lauren Bush.

“He was reluctant to work with us at the start and he wasn’t opposed to trialling aggressive behaviour, understandably as he didn’t seem to be that well handled.

“Initially we thought Barley may be too tricky to rehome, being a stallion for much of his life.”

But, she said, once Barley was settled, he thrived in a quiet environment with a competent and sympathetic handler.

“He was slowly introduced to other geldings one at a time, before slowly settling in with two youngsters before heading off to his new home,” she said.

Barley has joined borrower Holly Gill and in doing so, has provided a lifeline to his new fieldmate, who had recently lost his lifelong companion.

Holly started looking for a companion for 28-year-old Buzz when she had to had her elderly pony Cassie put down.

“Cassie was also 28 when we had to say goodbye – we had her for 20 years too so it was a devastating time for us and for Buzz,” said Holly.

“I’ve owned Buzz for 20 years so he is very special to me. He is a very friendly chap but can be a little apprehensive about change whether that’s a new water bucket or a new friend!

“We have taken it really slowly with Barley and Buzz, once they were happy over a fence we put them in the field together.

“I’ve noticed them spending more time standing close to each other and grooming, which is lovely to see.”

She added that it has been rewarding to work with Barley and gain his trust.

“The first time he let me catch him, or let me put a fly mask on it felt like we had really achieved something,” added Holly.

“He is still very wary and it’s going to take a lot of time and patience for him to fully trust us, but I’m so glad we’ve given him a chance.”

Horse set alight in horrific attack finds new loving home

A young horse who suffered horrific injuries when he was deliberately set on fire has found a loving home.

In 2021 two individuals were captured on CCTV pouring flammable liquid over then two-year-old Pilgrim, who was tied to the railings of a garden in Dublin. The people, whose identities were obscured by hoods, then set him alight.

“Grainy CCTV footage documents the moment Pilgrim’s life changed for ever,” said a spokesman for the Blue Cross and the Dublin Society for the Protection of Animals (DSPCA).

“In a matter of moments, the undeserving and wholly innocent Pilgrim became a victim of truly horrendous suffering. His face, ear, neck, flank and hindquarters all suffered horrific burns.”

Pilgrim was taken in by the DSPCA and the charity’s veterinary team worked closely with equine vet specialists from the University College Dublin veterinary hospital to help manage his wounds, owing to their complexity.

“His head was very, very swollen and he was just completely shut down,” said Claire Owens, DSPCA equine welfare and rehoming manager.

“He’s a horse that taught me an awful lot of patience. His saving grace was his love of people and despite the burns, he loved being groomed, where it wasn’t sore. That’s how I taught him to stand, and was able to get a headcollar on; I just did that basic handling.”

Pilgrim was moved to the Blue Cross rehoming centre in Oxfordshire following his rehabilitation and has since found a home with Carol and her herd of five rescue ponies.

“A four-year-old with his kind of medical history, which means that he might never be able to do anything else in his life, needs a secure home. I thought it would suit him to come here where there was never going to be any pressure for him to do anything other than be a horse and be happy, which hopefully is what we’ve achieved,” said Carol.

Pilgrim has been with Carol for six months and has become more relaxed and “truly at home”.

“How could you not fall in love with him? He’s just gorgeous. He’s got such a lovely, open, forgiving nature despite what’s happened to him,” she said.

“His story made me think it’d be right to take him on because ponies can come here, and I just want them to live as naturally as possible. I don’t necessarily want them to do anything else. They already do a job for me by coming here and being themselves, and getting me outside, exercising, and spending time getting to know them. They heal us really.”

Carol is encouraging others to consider taking on a rescue horse or pony.

“What it brings is incredible,” she said.

Blue Cross horse welfare coordinator Jennifer Hubbard added that the charity was “horrified” when they heard Pilgrim’s story, and did not know what to expect when he arrived in their care.

“But he was such a gentle horse. We were able to help him recover and find him a home where we knew he would be loved and safe,” she said.

“We were so happy to find Carol and it’s wonderful to see how much Pilgrim has grown in his new home, and to see him getting on with the other horses. He clearly knows he’s in his forever home.”

Elderly rescue gelding will ‘only know love and a full belly’ in new forever home

An elderly gelding found living without food and water will “only know love and a full belly” from now on after finding his “forever home”.

Maddison was transferred to the Blue Cross in May, having been taken in and cared for by the RSPCA. The 20-year-old gelding is now enjoying Christmas in his retirement home.

“He’s only been with us for a few months and is doing amazingly well,” said new owner Michelle.

“He’s getting on so well with our other two horses and is loving being pampered, he really is the sweetest guy in the world. He absolutely loves his food, which is not a surprise given his history, and he doesn’t have a bad bone in his body.”

Michelle added that Maddison is now in his “forever home”.

“He will only know love and a full belly from here on out. I hope others reading his story will consider taking on an older companion horse as it’s so rewarding,” she said.

“Because our other two horses live at our house and only have each other, it was a nightmare trying to ride as they would get stressed being left alone. Having Maddison has changed all that as they always have a friend with them. It’s been a game-changer.”

Clare Bevins, horse welfare supervisor at Blue Cross in Burford, said the charity regularly works with other welfare organisations to help find new homes for horses in need.

“Maddison is a sweet gentleman, and we were happy to find him a loving retirement home following his ordeal. We always urge anyone who is struggling to care for their horse to get in touch with a charity for help sooner rather than later,” she said.

“With the cost of living crisis we have never been more needed and are helping a number of owners who can no longer care for their horses. We can take horses into our rehoming centre or can also help to find new homes through our Home Direct service, where the animal stays in its home until we find a new owner.”

RSPCA inspector Tina Word added: “After such a horrible ordeal, to see Maddison thriving in his new home means the world”.

“It’s the very reason I get up every day to do my job. Caring for horses is a huge responsibility and it is never acceptable to leave an animal to suffer,” she said.

“Sadly, the worsening cost-of-living crisis means we and other welfare charities are likely going to see many more cases of neglect like this, but by continuing to work together, we will do everything we can to be a voice for animals.”

‘Loved dearly now’: elderly Shetlands among those freed from nailed-shut stables

Two veteran Shetland ponies who were found in “horrific” conditions, among horses standing on piles of muck four feet deep with their heads touching the stable ceilings, have found loving new homes.

Worzel, 20, and 19-year-old Edern were among 40 horses rescued by the RSPCA. Some were in fields with mud up to their knees – and there were foals unable to move as the mud was up to their chests.

“The animals were found without water, hay, or clean dry bedding and didn’t have a hard standing area to stand out of the mud. Several were found with overgrown hooves due to lack of farrier treatment,” said a spokesman for Blue Cross, which took in the two Shetlands.

“Some of the horses were unable to lift their heads up as the muck was so high their heads were touching the roof of the stable and they had no food or water. The RSPCA spent several hours digging out the horses. One stable door was found nailed shut and a crowbar was needed to prise it open.”

The horses’ owners were convicted of five offences and have been banned from keeping all animals.

Blue Cross Burford horse welfare supervisor Clare Bevins said: “We were shocked to see the horrific conditions the horses had been kept in and made to endure.

“The RSPCA did a great job handling and caring for these ponies after their ordeal. We were happy to take them in and find them loving new homes after the neglect they had suffered in their previous home.

“Despite his ordeal, Worzel was very confident and cute, while Edern was a little more nervous because he has some vision issues which makes him a little wary of people approaching.”

Edern was rehomed to Paula Moody, who said she had been “devastated” when she lost her 28-year-old horse Max.

“He left such a massive hole and our horse Astro, who is 17, was very sad and we knew we needed a new companion for him,” she said. “We’ve had Astro since he was three so they had been companions for a long time.

“When we met Edern at Burford we knew straight away that he was perfect. He’s got the sweetest character. He ticked all the boxes and he’s settled in so well. It’s great for Astro to have a new friend and they’ve bonded so well. He’s still a little nervous around people, no doubt due to what he has been through, but he just needs time and patience and it’s very rewarding to see him coming on in our home.”

Jackie Davis had had to say “the saddest farewell” to Harry, another Shetland rehomed from Blue Cross.

“My partner Mark and I were devastated, but to see my horse, Harley, pacing in the field and calling for his beloved best friend Harry was absolutely heartbreaking,” she said.

“We knew Harley was desperate for a companion so to my surprise, it seemed like fate to see Worzel, a very handsome little chap, available on the Blue Cross rehoming website.

“At the age of 20, Worzel was a perfect match as Harley was nearing 21. As Harry was a Blue Cross pony we were able to progress with rehoming Worzel quickly and decided to just get him delivered.

“So our first meeting was when he arrived at our home in Kent, and at that moment Harley’s head lifted and his ears pricked up, but things didn’t quite unfold as we had hoped.

“Harley just longed to be friends with Worzel, but the little fella, all 8hh of him, challenged my 16.1hh Harley to be the dominant one! Thankfully the boys have settled now and are very happy together.

“Worzel is such a sweet little boy, a dream to handle and he is great with our little dog Mavis. He loves being groomed and is gaining our trust all the time.

“Worzel has made our family complete again. This is his forever home; he’s safe now, cared for, spoilt rotten and loved very dearly.”

RSPCA inspector Terri-Ann Fannon said this was the worst horse case she had seen during her time with the charity.

“The horses were knowingly kept hidden in these conditions for a long period of time,” she said. “I am pleased to hear Edern and Worzel are now in loving homes after enduring such misery.”

Charity and vet organisations join forces to call for change on firework law

Leading charities and veterinary organisations have written an open letter urging the Government to review firework legislation.

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) and the Blue Cross are among the 11 bodies that have put their names to the letter, which was sent to the secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy.

The letter highlights how easy it is to buy fireworks, the serious animal welfare concerns associated with pyrotechnics and the detrimental impact they can have. Its signatories include Help for Heroes director Beth Miles, Combat Stress chief executive Jeff Harrison, chief executive and founder of PTSD UK Jacqui Suttie, along with representatives of burns charities, The Kennel Club and animal charities.

“Although there have been several Government awareness campaigns around fireworks, there has been no legislative commitment to a review of fireworks and their impact on people and animal welfare,” states the letter.

It references the tightened restrictions in Scotland (news, 14 July) and urges the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy to “follow suit”.

The new Scottish laws mean fireworks can only be supplied to, and used by, members of the public on certain dates, and grant local authorities power to set up firework control zones.

H&H has contacted both the department and the secretary of state, Grant Shapps, for comment.

Becky Thwaites, head of public affairs at national pet charity Blue Cross who has signed the letter, told H&H that easy access to fireworks and poor enforcement of existing legislation means animals “continue to suffer”.

“It is clear that a large number of companion animals of all species find fireworks extremely distressing, and they can have a severe impact on their health and welfare and lead to many animals being injured or even killed,” she said.

“That is why Blue Cross, along with other animal welfare organisations, is calling for the Government to conduct a review of the existing fireworks legislation.

“We would welcome measures such as restrictions on the periods when fireworks can be sold and used for private purposes.

“[We would also welcome] a reduction in the maximum decibel level of fireworks for public sale to 97 decibels, and powers to impose firework-free zones, as in Scotland, particularly around specific locations such as animal shelters, hospitals, and rehoming centres.”

The letter was released in the same week the RSPCA voiced concerns over the knock-on effect cancellations of major displays could have, with worries it could lead to an increase in at-home fireworks.

‘I’m trying to get people to talk about dying’: charity calls for owners to put plans in place for their horses

Owners have been encouraged to have the “difficult conversation” around their wishes after they die – and reminded of the support available to them.

Bereavement charity Widowed and Young (WAY), which offers support for people aged 50 and under who have lost a partner, set up a horse-related sub-group this year following a rise in members who have been left horses to look after when their partners have died, but are not always equestrians themselves.

“It’s traumatic when a partner dies, but when you have to manage their horses as well, it’s a lot, and people have to take on a role they might not have had before,” WAY chair Jo Sedley-Burke told H&H.

“Generally, we don’t like talking about death, and it’s quite often left until somebody is ill. But that conversation is really important – and positive things can come out of it. It’s horrific when your partner dies, but to know that you’re doing what they want can really give you some peace.”

The group offers peer-to-peer support and there are plans for international dressage rider Dan Sherriff to host a yard visit to meet some of WAY’s members and provide support and advice on some of the issues they might be facing.

“Our members really support each other with horse advice and suggestions, so people are receiving support as widows but also from an equine perspective,“ she said.

Former wills and probate solicitor Emma Gray, a WAY ambassador who has been involved in forming the charity’s horse sub-group, lost her husband Simon in 2016. Simon was a keen equestrian and took the couple’s children riding and when he died, Emma wanted her children to be able to continue with their passion. She has since learnt everything she can about horses and now has two on loan.

“Because of Simon’s death, I’ve written a letter saying what I want to happen with the horses; I’ve kept up-to-date lists about what they need, where their passports are and all the stuff someone needs to know,” said Emma, who runs Rainbow Hunting, a free resource providing guidance on funeral planning, wills and powers of attorney.

“I’m trying to get people to talk about death and dying – it’s going to happen to us all one day. Even if it’s the beginnings of a conversation, it’s better than nothing. Wills and legal documents are the backbone, but what people need to talk about are things like who will look after the pets, what it means and what they want to happen to them. Is there a friend or relative they’d like to have them or is the horse on loan and, if so, where is the loan agreement kept? There’s so much that people just don’t talk about.”

The Blue Cross runs Pet Peace of Mind, a free service where people can apply to register their pets – including horses and ponies – and when they die, the charity will take in the animal and find them a suitable home. The charity also provides suggested wording that can be included in an owner‘s will stating their animals are registered with Pet Peace of Mind.

“The service is in place to put people’s minds at ease if anything were to happen to them – once you’re registered, you can almost put it to bed and know it is there,” said Emma Hinds of the Blue Cross.

“At the moment, it is usually the older generation that apply, but it’s really important to get these things in place at any age. You don’t know what’s around the corner and this gives you that peace of mind – and your family as well. We have had cases where there are younger people affected and it really does help at the time when they’re in need.”

Rising costs – and vet bills – the top concerns for horse owners

The cost of vet bills is the biggest concern for many owners of horses, according to a new survey.

More than 5,800 horse owners took part in the Blue Cross Big Pet Census 2022 – which also surveyed small animal owners – as the charity aimed to better understand the issues affecting families across the UK and how it could help.

The results showed 55% of the participants who own a horse are worried about the cost of vet bills, 52% are concerned about the rising costs of owning a horse, and 30% are worried about the cost of insurance.

End of life care for horses was a concern of 38% of the surveyed participants, 50% are worried about scams, and 47% of owners are concerned about horse theft.

“When we asked owners what their main concerns were, it’s unsurprising that costs come out top of that list. Given that the recession is now starting to bite harder as we move into winter, sadly we are highly likely to start seeing the stark reality of financial struggles,” said Ruth Court, Blue Cross horse welfare manager.

“Requests for Blue Cross to take in or help rehome horses and ponies are continuing to escalate with more than 70% of people citing personal or financial circumstances as the reason. As the cost of living continues to increase, many more people may be unavoidably presented with making difficult choices for their beloved horses.”

Ms Court added the Blue Cross encourages anyone struggling to care for their horse for “whatever reason” to approach the charity so advice can be given to help keep them together where they can, or support can be provided to help find the horse a new home.

“We’d urge people to contact us sooner rather than later so we can work with them to make the best decision for them and their horse,” she said.

‘The hardest act of love you’ll ever carry out’: advice on dealing with the death of a horse

Honesty and knowing that whatever is felt is valid are two key issues when helping children — or adults — deal with the death of a horse.

H&H spoke to Blue Cross pet bereavement manager Diane James, after the subject had been raised recently online. Parents often struggle with how to break the news to a child that a horse or pony has died, or will have to be put down, and Diane said the key is to be honest with them.

“The most important thing is being honest and open from the start,” she said. “About what’s going to happen, without being too gory, and keep them involved. But you know your own child best.”

Diane said reaction often changes with age; younger children are often better able to cope, but teenagers can be introverted, and will talk about it to their peers rather than adults.

“It’s similar to any loss, human or animal,” she said. “It also depends on the relationship between the animal and child, but every person is different in how they react and feel.”

Diane said this includes the fact some people may be able to move on fairly fast, whereas others take longer, or may never feel they want to have another horse.

“They might feel guilty, and that they’re replacing the horse, but they’re not,” she said. “Or they might feel they’re dishonouring the horse they’ve lost. Others might be able to go out the next day and buy another horse and that’s the right thing for them; no one should ever feel guilty as it’s what’s right for you or your child.”

Diane added that there are great similarities between the ways people grieve for animals and other humans.

“But there’s a difference with animals, like often there’s guilt because we make that decision for them,” she said. “Sometimes the burden of what we’ve done goes with us, and sometimes I think we delay it because we love them, which isn’t always the right reason.”

Diane added that it is important for children and adults to realise that “however you’re feeling is normal”.

“It’s important to normalise it,” she said. “Every one of us is different but it’s normal to feel sad, angry, happy, guilty; all those emotions are perfectly normal.”

She added: “Most people who have loved and lost have reached the conclusion that it’s the best thing but there are always people who prolong an animal’s suffering, thinking it’s in their best interests.

“When people ask us for an answer, as they often do, we always say ‘Speak to your vet’. As much as we love our horses, we need to make sure we’re doing the best for them.

“I feel for all of us who have gone through it; it’s the hardest act of love you’ll ever carry out, and the toughest decision you’ll ever make.”

‘Think before you rug’: winter welfare plea to horse owners

Owners have been urged to think carefully before they rug their horses and ponies this winter.

Animal welfare charity Blue Cross has reminded owners that while horses may look snug while wrapped up, this may not be the healthiest or kindest option.

“As winter approaches, it’s tempting to reach for the extra rugs, but does your horse need a rug at all?” said Blue Cross horse welfare manager Ruth Court.

“There has been a lot of research around rugging in recent years and there are many reasons why we may not need to rug our horses, the most obvious one being that it can lead to weight gain and overweight horses.”

Horses have a much wider thermoneutral zone — the temperature range in which they do not have to “work” to control its body temperature — than humans, so even if owners feel cold, they may not.

Blue Cross is urging owners to consider certain points before they decide to grab a horse rug:

Horses will protect themselves in bad weather, by turning their backs on wind and rain to protect the head, neck, eyes, ears and belly.
They may choose natural shelter such as hedges and trees, or a field shelter, and keep together to share body warmth.
Horses with frost on their backs may look cold but this is not the case: very little body heat is escaping, which is why the frost has not melted.
The horse has a very efficient coat. The erector muscles for each hair need “exercising” to work efficiently, and over-rugging may compromise this natural mechanism.
Over-rugged horses do not have a natural ability to cool down, so may sweat and become uncomfortable.
Rugging can affect the horse’s natural weight control system; over-rugging and over-feeding in winter means they are less likely to lose weight, so increasing the risk of more weight gain and laminitis in spring.
Eating and digesting forage helps generate heat to keep a horse warm naturally.

Of course, some horses do need rugs: clipped, elderly, unwell and lighter-breed horses may need them, as well as those kept in stables, with restricted movement. The individual circumstances need to be considered when deciding which rug to put on your horse.

“Horses have evolved to deal with the cold,” said Ruth. “As long as we meet their basic management needs by providing ad lib forage, water, equine companionship and access to shelter they should be comfortable and warm with the lightest of rain sheets or no rugs at all.

“Do remember to make any changes gradually though, to give them time to adapt their natural heating system and they must be checked at least once a day to be sure they are happy in the field.”

‘Living their best lives’: rescued ponies’ joy at reunion after five years apart

Two ponies who were separated for five years were overjoyed to be reunited and are now “joined at the hip” once more.

Blue Cross ponies Treacle and Candy are living together with Joanna Robins, in Oxfordshire, “like they’d never been apart”.

The two bay mares were taken in by the charity as part of a large “welfare-compromised” herd in 2011. They were rehomed together for five years but a change in their borrower’s circumstances meant both were returned to the Blue Cross, and they were then rehomed separately.

“Fast-forward another five years and Treacle was once again returned to Blue Cross,” said Lauren Bush, horse rehoming coordinator at Blue Cross in Burford.

“Candy’s owner Joanna Robins spotted Treacle on the rehoming page of our website and got in touch straight away. We were thrilled to reunite this pair and they very much remembered each other, which made it even more special.”

Joanna also has Blue Cross Shetland Bubbles.

“I always keep half an eye on the Blue Cross website in case a pony crops up that I can’t refuse!” she said.

“I was amazed when I found Treacle on the rehoming page. I had initially met her when I went to collect Candy five years ago — at the time she was going out to a new home. I instantly recognised her on the page as she is so like Candy. It didn’t take long to decide that she had to come and live with us; she and Candy had lived together as a pair for five years and always been in the same herd, so I was sure it was the right thing to do!”

After the usual checks, Treacle went to her new home.

“I was slightly nervous that they wouldn’t remember each other, so decided to introduce them initially with a fence between them,” Joanna said.

“I needn’t have worried. Candy was so excited to see Treacle, she just couldn’t contain herself! She tore around the field, just stopping occasionally to have a sniff before she took off again. I quickly decided they were fine to put in together, and their joy at being reunited was just lovely to see.

Young pony rescued ‘looking like a sheep’ enjoys love and story time in new home

A young gelding who was rescued underweight, nervous of people and “looking more like a sheep than a pony” has found a perfect permanent home with his “best friend”.

Stan had such a thick, matted coat when he was taken into the care of Blue Cross last summer, he had to be clipped fully, which revealed how poor his condition was.

Six months later, he has found his home, with Evie Davey and her family, which includes three other Blue Cross ponies.

The charity’s rehoming coordinator Verity Anderton-Johnson told H&H: “When we first saw Stan, he looked more like a sheep than a pony due to how much hair he had. His coat was all matted, full of mud and faeces so the best thing to do was to clip the coat fully off as the matts were too big to brush them out. As he was unhandled, we had to sedate him to be clipped, and after clipping him, we realised how poor his condition was.”

Stan was turned out, fed and underwent health checks, worming, vaccinations and handling.

“Stan’s training came on quickly and he started to develop a lovely calm character for a youngster,” Verity said. “Laura [Davey] got in touch with me as her daughter Evie had spotted Stan on our website — which she apparently checks daily and knows the names of all the ponies looking for homes! — and thought he would make a great friend for their youngest pony Sprout. As they already had three other Blue Cross ponies we knew it would be the perfect home for Stan.

“Seeing how much Stan has come on since being in Blue Cross care and now in his dream home is wonderful. We couldn’t have wished for a more perfect home for him.”

Laura said Stan adores Evie, and comes running to the gate whenever he hears the car.

“He follows her everywhere and has to be involved with anything she’s doing,” she said. “He particularly loves story time and hearing about her day, and in the words of Evie a Stan cuddle makes everything better and all her worries just disappear.

“I asked Evie what Stan means to her and she said everything; he’s her whole world and her best friend and she just loves him.

“As for the future, Evie says she’s just looking forward to him being a baby and running free and living a life any horse deserves. She’s looking forward to him being able to go for walks round the village and carry her picnic.

“This time last year Stan was just trying to survive so this Christmas they are very much looking forward to Santa’s arrival. He has written his list and has written ‘Lots of treats please’.”

A Blue Cross spokesman added: “When fate is unkind to pets, Blue Cross is there to give them the love and care they deserve. Blue Cross helps sick, injured and homeless pets at its rehoming centres and animal hospitals across the country. This Christmas, make a donation to help change the fate of a vulnerable pet.”

Calls to include equines in new pet abduction law

Pet abduction will be made a specific criminal offence to distinguish it clearly from other types of theft, the Government has announced, as calls are made to include equines in the new legislation.

In May the Government launched a pet theft taskforce, made up of officials from departments including Defra, the Home Office, the Ministry of Justice, and the Crown Prosecution Service. The taskforce considered evidence from groups including academics, animal welfare organisations and enforcement agencies and this month released recommendations. One of these is the creation of a new pet abduction law. The Home Office also committed to ensuring pet abduction is recorded in a “consistent manner” across police forces, and officials from each department will be able to review the way data is collected.

“The new offence will prioritise the welfare of our pets as sentient beings and recognise the emotional Sdistress to the animal in addition to its owner,” said a spokesman for the taskforce.

The new law, which will be brought in in “due course”, is part of the Government’s action plan for animal welfare announced this year, and follows a parliament debate in October 2020 calling for an amendment to the Theft Act 1968 or for a new offence to be created under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (news, 29 October)

H&H asked Defra whether horses will be included under the new law and Defra said the details are “subject to further consideration”.

“The scope of the offence should include dogs, and the applicability to other types of animal will be explored during the development of the policy,” said a Defra spokesman.

A spokesman for welfare charity Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) said the topic of pet theft was close to the charity’s heart following the suspected theft of Welsh mare HAPPA Lottie from her permanent loan home last year. Despite appeals, Lottie has not been found.

“We have been left wondering what has happened to Lottie for more than 12 months,” the spokesman said. “We grow concerned she has entered the welfare system once more, and could be anywhere not receiving the care, attention and love she got from her home. Her family have gone through all the motions many of us would feel at the loss of a pet, but with added angst that they don’t know what has happened to her.

“The impact of dog thefts is heavily documented in the report, but HAPPA would urge the Government to consider the theft of any companion animal. We would be pleased to see this report result in supportive legislation, but to include horses, ponies, donkeys and their hybrids.”

A Blue Cross spokesman told H&H the charity has been campaigning for years to encourage the Government and police forces to take pet theft more seriously and make it a crime in its own right. While the Blue Cross is “delighted” Defra has recognised changes to the law must be made, the charity hopes horses will be included too.

Mare rescued with semi-feral M25 herd stands reserve champion in her new life

A mare who was one of 130 semi-feral ponies rescued from a large site by the M25 has gone on to showing success with a keeper who believes fate brought them together.

Ayla was about a year old when she was removed, along with others, from the large site in a major, multi-agency operation in 2019. Now three, she lives with Jazmine Sidwell and her daughter Bria.

Jazmine told H&H she lost her previous rescue horse Spirit, whom she had had for 18 years, in 2018, and shortly afterwards Bria lost her first pony.

“We were absolutely beyond broken,” she said. “It shattered our hearts.”

When Jazmine started looking for another horse, something she could enjoy from the ground and Bria could ride, she had no luck.

“We searched breeder after breeder, advert after advert, with no luck, for about a year,” she said. “Then one day, I was online, and thought I’d look at rescues again.

“I came across the Blue Cross site, and as soon as I saw Ayla’s photo, I knew. I’d looked through hundreds of photos but with her, I just knew, and when I spoke to [the charity] I knew she was the one, it was fate.”

Jazmine went to see Ayla soon afterwards, then brought her home the following week, where she now lives with Nettle, who also came from the Blue Cross.

Almost a year later, 13.1hh Ayla and Jazmine have “done absolutely everything together”.

“We’ve bonded on the ground, and my daughter’s absolutely infatuated with her,” she said.

“Then on 13 June, we went to our first affiliated show, in hand, and she was TGCA [Traditional Gypsy Cob Association] reserve champion. I’d entered just for her education, to have a day out, and I cried my eyes out in the ring, and haven’t stopped smiling since. I’m so proud of her.”

Jazmine and Ayla have qualified for the TGCA Traditional of the Year Show at Onley Grounds (29-31 July), and the plan is to back her in future, with hopes of Bria riding.

“I was a child when we rescued Spirit, and grew up with her so it’s like fate repeating itself; she’ll be for my daughter to ride and have her horse of a lifetime,” Jazmine said.

“The Blue Cross sent me all the information about what had happened to her before and it breaks my heart but I feel so lucky fate has worked and she’s in my life now; she’s so loved.

“I hope her story prompts people to look at rescue horses and have more of an open mind about them; they’re great horses with a lot of love to give.”

Bright future for abandoned ponies rescued from flooded Wellingborough site

A group of “emaciated, sick and nervous” abandoned ponies rescued from flooded land in Wellingborough have nearly all found homes more than a year on.

In February 2020 a large-scale multi-agency operation took place to rescue 43 ponies from the north Northamptonshire site. Of the group, 11 were taken in by the Blue Cross, five of whom were pregnant and gave birth last year.

A Blue Cross spokesman said many of the ponies were very thin, covered in lice, and had little experience of being handled. It is understood they had been dumped in the area for unauthorised grazing and the landowner was able to seize the horses with the help of the RSPCA under the Control of Horses Act. The owners could not be identified as the ponies were not microchipped.

“While at Blue Cross, the ponies all needed intensive work to help them get used to humans and being handled, and the team at Rolleston spent every day encouraging the ponies accept human touch,” said the spokesman.

“The ponies were slowly introduced to allowing handlers to put headcollars on them, be groomed and have their feet handled. For some they learnt quickly, but for others it took weeks and even months.”

Most of the group have found new homes including mares Eden and Soar who were rehomed together, with their foals River and Victory. Ribble and Nidd went to a home together in Wales, and foals Bunny and Bumblebee have been rehomed together with the hope they will become riding or driving ponies. Tweed, Bumblebee’s mother, remains under veterinary care, having arrived with severe liver damage.

The spokesman said one particularly nervous pony, Dove, is still undergoing training to have her feet picked up for the farrier and vet checks.

‘Sanctuary’ court case shows need for rescue licensing

THE case of an equine “sanctuary” from which 137 horses were removed, many in poor condition, highlights the need for the licensing of such organisations.

Sandra Jane Kaverneng-Stolp, known as Sandra Stolp, pleaded guilty to four offences under the Animal Welfare Act, relating to 22 horses, at Swansea Magistrates’ Court on 15 February. The 54-year-old, of Derwen Road, Pontardawe, Swansea, ran the Whispering Willows sanctuary.

The 137 horses, found at three sites, were signed over to equine charities in November 2019, after a multi-agency operation involving the RSPCA, World Horse Welfare, Redwings, the British Horse Society, the Horse Trust, Blue Cross, Bransby Horses, the Mare and Foal Sanctuary and the Donkey Sanctuary.

Vets confirmed many of the horses were in poor condition; one estimated that some of them had been suffering for six months or more, and two had to be put down. The court heard Stolp was struggling financially to care for the more than 100 horses.

She was banned from keeping all horses for 10 years and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs and a £90 victim surcharge. She must serve a 20-week curfew, during which she will wear a tag.

H&H has reported on calls for sanctuaries to be licensed, and National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) chairman Nic de Brauwere said the Whispering Willows case shows why this is “the next vital step” in protecting animal welfare.

“Too many times, NEWC members have seen sanctuaries struggle and fail when, at best, they take on too many animals without the necessary care, knowledge, experience or finances, or, at worst, use it to unscrupulously ask for people’s money while allowing animals in their supposed care to needlessly suffer,” he said.

“Just like on this occasion, it results in experienced charities having to join forces to provide emergency care and find new homes for the affected animals – putting additional pressure on their own resources.

“We welcome this result and sentencing, which we hope will act as a warning, and encourage more people to think carefully about who they donate their money to.”

Horse Trust head of field skills Carolyn Madgwick told H&H the trust supports the calls for licensing and regulation, as although many sanctuaries are set up with good intentions, founders often lack the necessary knowledge and skills.

“All equine charities rely on donations from the public – we need to ensure rescues and sanctuaries are known to authorities and regularly inspected, to assure the public their donations are helping horses, and situations like the case of Whispering Willows do not happen again,” she said.

World Horse Welfare CEO Roly Owers agreed that although “rescuers” may believe they are saving horses, if they cannot provide the right care, the animals are moving “out of the frying pan and into the fire.

“As highlighted in our joint report Britain’s Horse Problem, we and other equine welfare organisations are pressing for all animal welfare establishments to be licensed and inspected,” he told H&H. This will not only help to protect the welfare of the animals but also reassure the public that the animals are being looked after to an acceptable standard.”

Mare and Foal Sanctuary CEO Sarah Jane Williamson told H&H some smaller rescues do provide exemplary care, but licensing would ensure these standards were met across the board.

“Licensing would also mean that the public could confidently give their support to deserving sanctuaries and rescue centres,” she said.

The owner of a sanctuary from which 137 horses were removed after concerns were raised for their welfare has been banned from keeping horses for a decade.

Sandra Jane Kaverneng-Stolp, known as Sandra Stolp, who ran the Whispering Willows sanctuary, pleaded guilty to causing suffering to animals in her care.

The 54-year-old, of Derwen Road, Pontardawe, Swansea, pleaded guilty to four offences under the Animal Welfare Act, relating to 22 horses, at Swansea Magistrates’ Court yesterday (15 February).

The 137 horses, found at three sites, were signed over to equine charities in November 2019, after concerns were raised. A multi-agency operation involving the RSPCA, World Horse Welfare, Redwings, the British Horse Society, the Horse Trust, Blue Cross, Bransby Horses, the Mare & Foal Sanctuary and the Donkey Sanctuary was described as an “incredible illustration” of what can be achieved for animal welfare by joint working.

Vets confirmed many of the horses were in poor condition; one estimated that some of them had been suffering for six months or more.

An RSPCA spokesman said: “Photographs shown to the court show hips, spine and ribs clearly visible on some of the horses.

“Unfortunately, two of the horses found during the operation, to which charges relate, had to be put to sleep soon afterwards due to welfare problems. One was found with a high heart rate, low body temperature and with the tail crusted in large volumes of dried faecal material, while another, who was initially found lame and reluctant to move, was later unable to rise despite rehabilitation efforts and had to be put to sleep nine days after being found.”

RSPCA inspector Keith Hogben said looking after so many horses properly is a “huge challenge”.

“Sadly, when things went wrong, these horses suffered the consequences,” he said.

“Vets were clear that the conditions many of these horses were kept in was not appropriate with unsuitable grazing — 22 animals suffered because they were not given the care they needed by this sanctuary.

“We’re so grateful to the other equine organisations who supported this partnership operation. It’s an incredible illustration of what we can achieve together for animal welfare.

The court heard in mitigation Stolp was struggling financially to care for the more than 100 horses in her care.

She admitted that her failure to adequately explore and address the poor condition or injury of 22 horses led them to suffer unnecessarily.

She was banned from keeping all horses for 10 years and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs and a £90 victim surcharge. She must serve a 20-week curfew, during which she will wear a tag, and must not leave her home between 9pm and 6am.

Many of the horses have since been rehomed.

Revellers urged to ditch New Year’s Eve fireworks as survey reveals extent of equine suffering

Blue Cross is urging people to ditch fireworks this New Year’s Eve, as the extent of equine suffering is revealed.

The animal charity surveyed horse owners early this month, and found great concern about the impact fireworks have, and the difficulty in predicting when they may be let off as owners try to plan ahead.

They found 73% of respondents prepared their horses for fireworks, with 51% making plans with their yards. Action taken included bringing horses in early, playing music and trying to distract horses with food, while some used prescribed medication or herbal remedies.

But 35% of respondents reported accidents as a direct result of fireworks, which included a pony who broke her neck and a horse who sustained a serious leg injury. Both had to be put down, and another pony died of a heart attack.

Almost 70% of owners said they were extremely worried about the horses’ welfare. It was reported in the survey that 71% of horses had shown fear of fireworks in the past, and 49% had become difficult to handle as a result.

A Blue Cross spokesman said: “As a difficult year for everyone comes to a close, it is understandable the British public will be wanting to celebrate new hope for 2021 this winter and, for some, that might include letting off fireworks in their garden, or private fields.

“But we are asking people to think about horses and pets this New Year’s Eve and resist the temptation to use loud fireworks, which we know terrify many of the animals we share our lives with.”

More than 70% of respondents to the survey believe fireworks should be banned in the UK, apart from at organised events, while 43% of people had noticed an increase in garden fireworks this year.

Blue Cross education officer Gemma Taylor, said: “These results have laid bare the extent of suffering so many of the nation’s horses go through for days and weeks at a time every single year.

“That’s why we are pleading with people to think about their own actions this New Year’s Eve and consider ditching setting off loud fireworks, which leave many horses literally shaking in fear, for other celebrations.

“We know at Blue Cross just how upsetting this time of year can be for animals – especially now we are seeing more and more people doing their own fireworks in their back gardens and private fields. Let’s all do our bit to help make this fear a thing of the past.”

The charity is asking the public to spread the word and display posters, which can be downloaded from the Blue Cross website, in their windows or local community boards, encouraging people not to use fireworks this winter.

Long-term rescue horses seek new homes this Christmas

A charity is seeking a happy Christmas outcome for some of its longest-dwelling residents.

Fozzie, Karate and Selwyn have each been in the care of the Blue Cross for 400 days, while Eddie (pictured, top) has been looking for a new home for more than 130 days.

The charity has rehomed 222 horses this year, through its centres in Oxfordshire and Staffordshire, as well as its “home direct” scheme. It is now hoping these four can follow suit as soon as possible.

“We are really pleased that Blue Cross has helped 222 horses to find new homes this year and we’d really like to see more go into homes in time for Christmas,” said Blue Cross rehoming co-ordinator Verity Anderton-Johnson.

“We hope anyone looking for a horse chooses a rescue who really deserves a second chance in life and will give so much back, as we know animals have to their owners over this difficult year.”

The charity is also fundraising to ensure those animals in its care over Christmas have an “extra special” dinner.

According to a survey of 1,000 pet owners by communication firm Opinion Matters, 28.2% of owners treat their animals at Christmas — and the charity is planning to do the same.

“While we always try and spoil the homeless horses a little bit more over Christmas, with licks and enrichments boxes stuffed with hay, the team at the centre will be pulling together on Christmas day to give all the homeless animals the Christmas they deserve,” added Verity.

“We hope our supporters will help by donating towards an extra special Christmas dinner for all animals who are in our care.”

Leading UK equine welfare charities have created a report looking into what can no longer be called a horse crisis, as it has become the norm. They have also made recommendations on how to resolve the problems. H&H finds out more

SEVEN welfare charities have joined forces to report on the “dire state” of the UK’s horse crisis – and offer solutions to the “broken system” that has caused it.

World Horse Welfare, Blue Cross, Bransby Horses, British Horse Society, Horseworld, Redwings and the RSPCA published the report, Britain’s Horse Problem, which highlights the fact more responsible ownership, rules and enforcement are needed to “break the cycle of suffering”.

It states that the situation in England and Wales can no longer be described as a horse “crisis”, as it has been persistent for so long, arising after the 2008 financial crisis and continuing unabated. Reports in 2012 and 2013 set out the situation, along with recommendations of actions the public, Government, agencies and charities should take to address it.

“While equine charities have taken in thousands of horses each year since these reports were published, horses are being put at risk at least at the same pace as we are collectively able to rescue them,” reads this month’s report.

“Like trying to drain a bath with the taps still on, no matter how much water escapes down the drain, the water level remains unchanged.”

The report states that work must start now on reforming the system if we are to learn from history; the recession expected as a result of the coronavirus is “likely to cause the welfare ‘bath’ to overflow”.

The report covers the way the pandemic has affected welfare charities and is expected to create significantly more issues, at a time when charities are least able to cope with them, “against a backdrop of a ‘broken system’ which allows thousands of horses to become at risk of suffering each year”.

Entrepreneur and rescue horse owner Deborah Meaden said: “Issues such as overbreeding, neglect, accidental breeding and the ever-rising cost of keeping a horse have all combined to create the perfect storm for the equine world.

“We all need to pull together to help the plight of vulnerable horses, ponies and donkeys who will fall victim to the new layer of problems the equine world faces in the months and years to come. I think it is all our responsibility to care and help these animals whether we are horse owners or not.”

The reports sets out progress in the past six years, such as the introduction of the Control of Horses Act and changes to equine ID laws. There has been more investment in human behaviour change-related approaches by welfare charities, and organisations are taking a multi-agency approach to welfare.

But members of the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) take in more than 2,000 horses every year. Space is limited and some smaller charities have either folded or merged with larger organisations.

The report states that inadequate enforcement of legislation is partly to blame for the situation, as this allows abusers to offend “systematically”. It adds that if new equine ID legislation is properly enforced, which it has not been in the past, this could go a long way towards fixing the system. The Animal Welfare Act must also be better enforced, the report authors believe – Defra estimates that 111 of 343 local authorities have no animal welfare inspectors, partly because councils have never had any funding specifically for enforcing the Act.

Roly Owers, chief executive of World Horse Welfare, which led the coalition producing the report, said: “With such a challenging winter ahead, now is the time to highlight to the public and Government that we see a grim equine welfare storm brewing, and that we urgently need support to cope with it.

“It is as important as ever to better tackle the root causes of this systemic scourge and change the system to better protect horses and to truly hold owners to account.”

Horse owners and the public are also asked to consider their own responsibilities when caring for their animals or giving to rescue charities.

“If you are struggling with horse ownership, reach out to a charity who may be able to help offer support and guidance before the problem spirals out of control,” Mr Owers said.

“We also urge members of the public to give to reputable welfare charities this winter but do your homework. Is the rescue organisation a genuine charity? Do they meet basic welfare standards for the animals they care for? A little consideration before you give can make sure you have the impact you want.”

The report states that owners must recognise the situation, and their role in it, and that welfare organisations should develop educational campaigns to improve care of horses.

It also recommends mandatory licensing of animal welfare establishments, and of breeders, dealers and livery yards.

“Everyone is responsible for fixing the broken system behind poor equine welfare in Britain,” it concludes. “Including owners, breeders, dealers, Government, landowners, local authorities, equine vets and rescue organisations.”

A welfare charity is calling on owners to complete a survey on the impact of fireworks as concerns are raised ahead of potentially “detrimental” New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Blue Cross launched the online survey, which is open until 10 December, in the hope of gaining more data on the concerns of fireworks within the equine community.

A spokesman for the charity said as the English lockdown was in place from 5 November, many people chose to host personal firework displays in their own gardens or private fields on Bonfire Night.

“We are concerned about the rising numbers of personal celebrations in the lead up to New Year’s Eve and the detrimental effect this can have on pets and horses, who may be fearful of the sights and sounds,” he said.

Blue Cross education manager Kerry Taylor added that in these changing times it is important to understand the concerns owners have around fireworks season and the impact these can have on their animals.

“Horses have a natural and innate flight response; and we know some fare badly when local fireworks are set off and we are hoping to understand the national picture in greater detail,” she said.

On 2 November MPs debated a 2019 petition calling for a ban on the sale of fireworks to the public. While the government stated it understood the “strong feelings” around fireworks, it said a ban would not mean the “issue would disappear”.

Other work this year included the launch of an awareness campaign by the Office for Product Safety Standards (OPSS) providing safety tips on using fireworks responsibly, with references included to pets and vulnerable people. The OPSS has also commissioned a testing programme to determine the noise level of common types of fireworks sold for public use.

We will not forget: remembering the horses who gave their lives in war

Charities are among those remembering the soldiers and animals killed in conflict, on Armistice Day, today (11 November).

More than eight million equids died between 1914 and 1918, as well as camels, bullocks, dogs, carrier pigeons and other animals.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said many of its inspectors had been soldiers prior to joining the charity, and when the war was declared they were called to their old regiments, like many other reservists in Britain.

“At the height of the war 1,000 horses a week were being sent to fight,” said the spokesman.

“Within weeks of the war starting we set up the RSPCA Fund for Sick and Wounded Horses. It raised more than £250,000 (the equivalent of over £12m today) between 1914 and 1918. Even King George V made a donation.”

The spokesman said the fund paid for four fully equipped field hospitals with state-of-the-art operating theatres that could each hold up to 2,000 horses. It also bought 28 motorised and 180 horse-drawn ambulances to carry injured horses back from the fighting to the vet hospitals.

“The hospitals treated two and a half million animals during World War One and 80% of them were taken back to the front lines again,” said the spokesman.

“More than eight million horses died in the First World War, many on the front lines, and 18 RSPCA inspectors were killed during the conflict. During the war, the RSPCA worked tirelessly to help sick and wounded horses on the frontline and protect and support all those animals under fire.”

Dermot Murphy, head of the RSPCA rescue teams, said: “It is so important to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of our staff and remember all the animals who lost their lives through conflict.

“Animals have given so much to us, not just in the theatre of war, and we owe it to them to continue our work to improve their lives now and into the future.”

The spokesman added that the RSPCA bought thousands of sheepskins, cloths, bandages, medicines, brushes, hoof picks, books and tonnes of horse feed for the animals in the field hospital, and the charity trained men entering the Army Veterinary Corps in looking after horses.

“As horses were being subjected to new types of warfare, including gas attacks, the fund began paying for specialist veterinary laboratory equipment and isolation units, which were vital in treating animals suffering the effects of gas attacks and burns,” he said.

“We didn’t confine our support to British forces. The fund provided 11 motorised ambulances to the American army, as well as provided assistance to the Canadian army. By the end of the war the fund had become truly international, supporting activities in France, Italy, Mesopotamia, Salonika and Egypt.”

The Blue Cross started helping animals during the Balkan War, in 1912-13 then during the First World War set up animal hospitals on the front line, providing essential veterinary kits to soldiers for their horses.

“Originally named ‘Our Dumb Friends League’, the charity formed in 1897 and has been crucial to the lives of millions of animals since its early work helping the working horses of London. Special fundraising efforts provided water troughs placed all over the capital and ‘trace’ horses to assist weaker horses carrying a heavy load up steep hills,” said a Blue Cross spokesman.

“The Blue Cross Fund, led by Arthur Coke, worked tirelessly to raise cash towards helping animals at home and overseas in wartime. In the First World War, animal hospitals were set up across France and Italy, and animal ambulances, marked with a blue cross to distinguish them from the ambulances for injured soldiers, were funded to collect animals on front lines needing urgent treatment. Eventually, the charity changed its name to Blue Cross in the 1950s.”

The spokesman added that by the end of the First World War, more than 50,000 animals had been treated in Blue Cross hospitals in France alone, and veterinary supplies were received by more than 3,500 units of the British Army.

Special ponies desperate for loving homes after months in charity’s care

Welfare charity the Blue Cross is seeking forever homes for four horses who have already spent more than a year in their care.

The organisation’s Rolleston centre in Staffordshire said it was “desperate” to find new families for the horses, who could offer them the “love and care they deserve”.

Three of the horses are only suitable as companions while one pony, three-year-old piebald cob Gus, could go on to have a ridden or driven career.

Gus, who is 12.2hh, came to Rolleston via the RSPCA in August 2019 and is looking for a home where he can be left to mature until he is at least four years old, when he can then be backed. Gus is able to live out 24/7 with shelter and company.

Fozzie, a 16-year-old bay native gelding, is looking for a companion home where he needs to live out 24/7 as he finds being stabled stressful. He was taken in by the RSPCA in 2017 and spent time in a private home before being returned to the Rolleston in 2019.

Also looking for companion homes are Karate, a 15.3hh, 11- year-old warmblood mare who has been with the Blue Cross since October 2019 and Selwyn, a nine-year-old 12.2hh chestnut gelding.

Selwyn had been kept alone in stables for most of his life and was quite nervous when he arrived. He is not used to being round other horses and the team have been working hard to socialise him and help him gain confidence. Although he is improving daily, he will need understanding owners who can help him settle into a new home.

Verity Anderton-Johnson, Horse Rehoming Coordinator at Blue Cross in Rolleston said: “These are all very special ponies who really deserve to find a home of their own and make new horse pals. Most horses prefer to be part of a group or have some company and we hope to find these four ponies homes where they will have all the love and care they deserve.”

Five healthy foals have been born to a group of ponies rescued from floods.

A total of 43 ponies were taken from flooded fields in Wellingborough in a large-scale operation in February, involving multiple organisations.

Many were thin, covered in fleas and lice, and had little if any experience of being handled.

The Blue Cross took in 11 of these, including five mares who have all since given birth during lockdown.

“All of the ponies were in a bad way when we took them in,” said Blue Cross rehoming co-ordinator Verity Anderton-Johnson.

“They were very nervous and one in particular, Soar, was so emaciated it was a shock to discover she was in foal. It was wonderful to arrive at the centre some mornings to find a new baby resident that mum had managed the birth without any help and that they are all doing so well. We are very proud of these mums.”

The mares and foals have been named Hipper and Bunny, Tweed and Bumblebee, Soar and Victory, Dove and Rainbow and Eden and River.

It is understood that they had been dumped in the area for unauthorised grazing.

The landowner seized the horses, with the help of the RSPCA, under the Control of Horses Act. Bunny was born on Good Friday (10 April) and Victory on VE Day (8 May), with the other three arriving during May and June.

A Blue Cross spokesman added “all are doing well and growing in confidence and many of the foals enjoy having a fuss from the centre team”.

“While it is a very happy ending for some of the foals who are soon to go to new homes, others are still looking to find places where there are with other mares and foals until the foals are weaned,” he added.

An RSPCA spokesperson said the charity is “delighted” the horses are doing well in the Blue Cross’s care.

“[The rescue]was a difficult task as it was such a large site with lots of hazards such as a river, lake and flooded fields so our water rescue teams were also called to join the effort,” he said.

“None of the animals were micro-chipped so we were unable to identify and locate their owner to hold them responsible. But it is great that all the horses are now returning to full health and will go on to be rehomed.”

Relief as stolen one-eyed Shetland pony found in graveyard

A one-eyed Shetland pony has been found tied up in a graveyard more than a week after he was stolen from his field, after a widespread public appeal.

Basil, a Blue Cross rescue pony, was stolen from his borrower Ali Bluck’s home in Gloucestershire on 21 May. Following a campaign to bring the gelding home he was discovered by a dog walker in a graveyard in Winterbourne, Bristol, around a 30-minute drive away.

Ali told H&H Basil was taken from the paddock he shares with her other gelding Pio in a 10-minute window.

“I left, drove past the paddock and saw them both, then got a phone call 10 minutes later from my partner Jeremy to say Basil had been stolen,” she said. “Jeremy heard Pio whinnying hysterically, went outside to check on them and Basil was gone.

“Whoever took him was organised and knew what they had to do. They went through three gates to get to him, and they were closed again behind them. There were signs of a struggle with scuff marks on the ground and when the police visited they found what appeared to be a handle from a transit van and a box of gloves.”

Ali said her “world fell apart” while Basil was gone.

“It was utterly horrendous. To have anything or anyone go missing is awful – it’s the not knowing if they are being taken care of,” she said.

“It was so hot and I was thinking things like was he being given water. You just don’t know what’s happening to them. Basil has separation anxiety and he must have been terrified and missing Pio.”

After Basil was stolen the Blue Cross asked the public to make him “too hot to handle”.

“The Blue Cross were absolutely fantastic. I had several phone calls a day with them, I’d have been lost without their support – they kept me going and told me ‘we’re going to get this out there and get him home’,” said Ali.

“The public, media and other charities were sharing Basil’s story far and wide. Even Deborah Meaden of Dragons’ Den shared his story. All the support gave me hope that someone might spot him.”

Ali received a call from a member of the public on Sunday morning to say Basil had been found by a dog walker.

“I was told he had been discovered tied to a tree and had a halter wrapped round his head a few times because it was too big. Within minutes of the walker finding him, other people in the area went to help and they knew it was Basil after seeing his story online. Someone took him to a nearby yard for me to collect him,” she said.

“I couldn’t believe he’d been found. I was so relieved, when I got to him I hugged him and sobbed. The people said he had been quite skittish but he just put his head on my legs and knew it was me.”

Basil was taken home and checked by a vet and found to have a minor eye infection and a sore on his face from the halter. The gelding was hungry and dehydrated but had not suffered any other injuries.

“On Sunday evening he was quite bewildered and tired but by Monday he was back in his routine and frisking me for carrots,” said Ali.

“People have been so kind, it’s restored my faith in humanity. I received so many messages of support from strangers. I can’t thank people enough for sharing his story – every single share is what got him home. There are some bad people in the world, but the good people outnumber them by a million.”

The Blue Cross has urged the public to make a stolen one-eyed Shetland pony “too hot to handle”.

Basil, a 10hh piebald gelding who is missing his left eye, was stolen from his paddock at his borrower’s home in Gloucestershire at around 6.30pm last Thursday (21 May). He had been with the borrower’s own horse, who was not taken.

A spokesman for the Blue Cross told H&H there had been some reported sightings of the 12-year-old gelding but they had turned out not to be Basil, who has some distinctive markings, and is microchipped.

“We really want him back home safe and sound with his borrower, who is absolutely devastated, as you can imagine,” she said.

“We have had a lot of support online from people sharing the information, and from other charities, so we have a good network out there looking for him. Hopefully someone will recognise him and we can get him home, I imagine he is terrified. He was rehomed in February where he settled straight away and his borrower absolutely adores him.”

Major equine welfare charities have shared signs of hope as supporters step in to foster horses, and rehoming looks possible in the near future.

A spokesman for Blue Cross said the charity has been “overwhelmed” by the equestrian sector’s support in providing temporary homes for equines during lockdown.

World Horse Welfare, whose rescue and rehoming centres are at “record levels”, also stated yesterday (28 April) that it will be “able to start rehoming again very soon”.

Equine welfare charity rehoming centres have been closed to the public as a result of the pandemic. While applications are still welcome, it means progress in rehoming horses is restricted.

“While we will have to make changes — such as our field officers carrying out virtual home checks by video call for any new rehomers — being able to start rehoming again means that those horses and ponies who already have homes to go to will be able to leave our farms,” stated a World Horse Welfare spokesman.

“Visiting a rehoming centre is not considered an essential journey for members of the public but we will make arrangements with the rehomer to get the horse to his or her new home.”

Staffing numbers at the Blue Cross’s two rehoming centres have been greatly reduced, and several of the charity’s regular support yards have stepped in to take horses temporarily into their own care.

Rehomers of other Blue Cross horses have also stepped in to help, with 33 homes offering to take in horses on a short-term basis.

The Blue Cross has 82 horses remaining at its centres, with 29 now with fosterers or supporters.

Among these is Jennifer Handy, in Leicestershire, who immediately agreed to take in eight horses even though they had suspected ringworm.

“I have dealt with cases of ringworm before, so it didn’t deter me from taking this lovely group of ponies on,” she said.

“I am lucky to have lots of fields and barns which means I have been able to keep them separate from my other horses. They have been treated with a body wash and spot treatment and all have now recovered. My family and I have a genuine love of horses and wanted to help the Blue Cross at this difficult time.”

The Blue Cross is continuing with its initial matchmaking process, where applications and prospective borrowers are assessed over video calls.

Some straightforward horses with low training needs are being rehomed under strict social distancing guidelines, while others are being matched to new homes to help the charity act faster when things get back to normal.

Horse welfare manager Ruth Court said the charity will “never cease to be amazed” at the generosity and kindness of the borrowers as well as the “tireless innovation and adaptability of our teams”.

“I am so proud of our ‘can do’ approach,” she said. “We feel confident that we have the necessary plans in place and can cope with any horses that have to return from loan.

“We are in a strong position to keep pushing ahead with our rehoming process to give every horse the best possible chance of a new life.”

Charity accepting rehoming applications as it looks beyond lockdown

A charity is setting “the wheels in motion” for future equine rehoming applications, as it looks beyond the coronavirus pandemic.

While Blue Cross is unable to rehome horses during the Covid-19 lockdown, the charity’s rehoming team is beginning the matchmaking process.

“This way horses and ponies in the charity’s care will be a step further towards their new homes when the lockdown is lifted, and centre visits and home checks can commence,” said a Blue Cross spokesman.

“Currently we have more than 100 horses and ponies looking for new homes at our centres in Burford, Oxfordshire, and Rolleston, Staffordshire. More than 25 are registered on the home direct scheme, where they are moved from one home direct to another, under the expert guidance of the rehoming team.”

The charity’s home direct scheme assists owners who need to give up their horses or ponies by finding a home for them while they remain in the owners’ care, instead of the horse or pony going into the care of one of the charity’s centres.

Blue Cross rehoming coordinator Abigail Leach said the initial stage of the matchmaking process involves looking at applications and matching requirements, experience and environment with suitable horses and ponies.

“Our centres are closed during lockdown and we can’t carry out home visits but by receiving applications now we can act faster when things get back to normal, to secure perfect homes for horses and ponies who are ready and waiting,” she said.

Among the horses and ponies in the charity’s care is 11-year-old 15.2hh mare Belle and seven-year-old 13hh gelding Jaxx.

“Belle is a lovely girl who enjoys lots of fuss and attention, and is looking for a home as a companion,” said the spokesman.

“Jaxx is looking for a companion home where he has someone to build a bond with. He has been nervous about having his feet trimmed but with regular training he is making great progress.”

The spokesman added some owners may be struggling to keep their horses or ponies owing to the challenges of the Covid-19 situation.

“Blue Cross has a special ‘help my horse’ inbox for those needing support and advice and is happy to take enquiries during these uncertain times,” he said.

“The charity is unable to make visits to assess horses during the lockdown period but can help guide and advise horse owners, collect the necessary paperwork for the home direct scheme and have responsible rehoming plan in place once normal service is resumed. If you need guidance please email helpmyhorse@bluecross.org.uk.”

Happy ending in ‘perfect home’ for Shetland who lost his best friend

A Shetland who lost his best friend and had to be parted from his elderly owner has found a new beginning at the age of 31 after being rehomed by an equine charity.

Tin Tan was taken into the care of the Blue Cross after his owner was taken ill and he also lost his companion of 15 years, fellow Shetland Dimmo, who had to be put down because of ill health.

On his arrival, the charity discovered Tin Tan was suffering from Cushing’s disease and as a result had lost weight and had some laminitic changes to his feet.

Staff at Blue Cross Rolleston made sure he was fed three times a day to help him regain condition at a steady pace while also having his time in at grass restricted to minimise the risk of laminitis.

Verity Anderton-Johnson, the centre’s horse rehoming coordinator, said: “X-rays showed Tin Tan had very healthy feet for his age and blood tests revealed his hormone levels could be managed with daily medication, which was fantastic news.

“We also put him on a diet plan with a specialist feed that didn’t contain too much sugar, as a high sugar diet could set his laminitis off.”

To help Tin Tan through losing Dimmo, he was paired with a new companion, Snoopy, who the centre hoped he would bond with.

“The next stage was to allow them to see each other through a gate, and once we were happy they would be comfortable we let Snoopy in with Tin Tan. It wasn’t long before the pair became best friends,” Verity said.

The Blue Cross said the ponies have now found a home together with an owner who understands Tin Tan’s medical needs.

“We’re really pleased that they have found the perfect home,” Verity added.

Equine crisis continues under ‘systematic failure of ownership and enforcement’ H&H Plus

Equine welfare charities remain pushed to maximum capacity as a result of a “systematic failure of ownership and enforcement” — but it is hoped possible new legislation could help.

Charities are facing challenges with a rise in complex multi-agency cases involving large numbers of horses, but say they have to act “within the law”, whereby if animals are being kept in legal conditions, their hands are tied.

World Horse Welfare chief executive Roly Owers told H&H the charity’s centres have taken in 253 horses this year compared to 266 in 2018, but said the decline was as centres are full — not owing to a decrease in cases.

“While the number of horses visibly fly-grazing has decreased as a result of the Control of Horses Act, the stark reality is that demands on welfare charities and the number of horses at risk remain consistently high at around 7,000. So this is no longer so much of a horse crisis as systemic failure of ownership and enforcement,” said Mr Owers.

“We have taken in 121 horses under prosecution compared to 110 last year and 76 in 2017. This had a significant impact because while they are the subjects of prosecution, we are limited on what we can do; they cannot be castrated, brought on or rehomed until the case is concluded, which can take two years or more. Cases are becoming increasingly complex, often featuring groups of horses, and sometimes a multi-agency approach is the only way of resolving them, which places heavier demands on our resources.

“On a more positive note, there has been a step forward on the licensing of rescue and rehoming centres in England and Scotland, for which we hope there will be progress on consultation next year and possible legislation.”

RSPCA equine welfare expert Mark Kennedy told H&H the charity rehomed 226 horses in 2019, but took in more than 820 this year compared to 777 in 2018, and received more than 20,000 welfare calls.

“Coping with the levels of neglect our inspectors see daily is hugely challenging; this is amplified when well-meaning animal lovers take to social media accusing charities of failing to act, while failing to recognise that the RSPCA must act within the law,” said Dr Kennedy.

“We may not like conditions animals are kept in, but if those are legal, our hands are tied. We are often working behind the scenes, but are restricted by what we can say publicly about a situation. This can result in rising tensions and people taking the law into their own hands to ‘rescue’ horses which they feel charities are ignoring,” (news, 13 June).

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cutress told H&H the charity has taken in 105 equines this year, compared to 94 in 2018.

“This year we’ve attended talks with the government alongside other charities to discuss ways to address the root causes, such as tackling indiscriminate breeding, increasing the traceability through new microchipping laws and the introduction of the Central Equine Database, as well as the potential licensing of rescue centres,” she said.

Rosie Mogford, senior horse rehoming manager at Blue Cross, told H&H the charity’s centres are full and the demand for welfare support “only seems to be increasing”.

“We are finding some smaller rescue organisations and sanctuaries are becoming overwhelmed with the numbers in their care and welfare becomes compromised. We would like to see the introduction of licensing and regulation of rescue centres and sanctuaries to prevent large groups of horses suddenly needing outside help,” she said.

‘Wonder’ cob to retire after 13 years’ service helping neglected horses

A “wonder” horse who played a vital role at a charity is seeking a retirement home after 13 years of service.

Shadow, a 15.2hh 19-year-old cob, joined the Blue Cross in 2006 after being handed over by his previous owners and has been a “schoolmaster” for the charity at the Dovecliff Road centre in Rolleston.

A spokesman for the charity said: “Blue Cross takes in many horses who have been abandoned and left alone, many arrive at the centre with little human handling and can be very nervous around people. Shadow played a vital role in reassuring and encouraging these young and often neglected horses.

“Shadow was ridden by potential rehomers for the team to assess and make sure they were matching them with the best homeless horse. He was also used in display events at the centre for visitors to enjoy.”

Welfare assistant Alice Pettitt, who worked with Shadow for several years, said the gelding was the charity’s longest-serving member of staff.

“I’ve been very close to him over the years, he’s been my best work pal for so long it will be sad to see him leave, but we know it is for the best and he will continue to enjoy his retirement with one-to-one care,” she said.

“We will really miss him but wish him a very happy and well-deserved rest.”

The spokesman added that there has been lots of interest in the “super friendly” gelding and they hope to find him a home soon, but said there are lots of other “wonderful” horses at the charity looking for homes.

Colt found emaciated and riddled with worms enjoys first Christmas in new home

A rescued horse found abandoned in a field of mud with an infected face abscess is celebrating his first Christmas with new rehomers after making a full recovery.

Skewbald colt Denny was painfully thin when he arrived at the Blue Cross’s Burford centre 20 months ago.

The three-year-old colt had been seized by police using the Control of Horses Act after being found in a notorious fly-grazing area in south west England.

He was riddled with worms, had badly neglected hooves and his legs were covered in sores.

A rotten tooth had led to an infection to his sinuses and the formation of a suppurating abscess on his face.

But after dental surgery to remove the abscessed tooth the pony started to gain weight.

The pony was wormed, had his legs treated by the staff from the Blue Cross and once had gained strength was castrated.

In April this year the horse found the perfect new home with Ginny and Nick Williams in Wiltshire.

Ginny’s elderly mare had a tendon injury and could no longer be ridden.

Initially she was looking for an older horse from the Blue Cross but when she saw Denny on the website she set off to see him straight away.

“Denny had just been lightly backed when we took him on but didn’t know how to canter. By the end of the summer he was riding out alone or in company confidently,” she said.

“He’s so comfortable with a light mouth. He is very brave and not phased by anything,” she added.

The pony travels well in the trailer and “loves to be in the middle of everything.”

Since October Denny has been resting so he can grow and will be brought back into work in March to further his training.

“When we open our curtains in the morning he is always the first to look up and come to the gate. We are so pleased we were allowed to have this very special pony in our lives and look forward to many happy years ahead. We can’t imagine life without him,” said Ginny.

Older horses desperately seeking happy homes

Companion homes are urgently sought by the Blue Cross following an influx of older equines admitted to the charity’s centres.

There are currently 12 healthy older horses and ponies at the Burford rehoming and rehabilitation centre all looking for retirement homes this Christmas.

“We are not quite sure why we have had a sudden spate of oldies, but they all have wonderful unique characters and personalities and we know they will be superb companions,” said Laura Pearce, the centre’s horse rehoming administrator.

Bramble, a 13.2hh pony aged 20 (pictured below), has come back into the charity’s care after being loaned as a riding pony and more recently a companion.

The pony has “a wonderful laid back nature and is a pleasure to be around” but would suit a home with other ponies that need restricted grazing as can put on weight.

Happy to be left on his own when other horses are being ridden the pony is “an ideal companion for a private home” said the charity.

Emerald (pictured, below), a 15hh 23-year-old Arab is another elderly equine looking for a retirement home.

She has been shown in the past and is easy to handle and loves attention.

She is easy to handle but can become worried in new situations and needs a calm sympathetic handler to look after her.

Mary King ‘thrilled’ at new ambassador role

Top event rider Mary King has become the first ever equestrian ambassador for welfare charity the Blue Cross.

Mary, who has represented Great Britain at six Olympics between 1992 and 2012, winning team silver in 2004 and 2012 and team bronze in 2008, has been a “keen supporter” of the charity for many years and will help to raise the profile of its important welfare work in the UK.

Mary has supported the national equine welfare survey which was organised by the charity and has ridden a Blue Cross horse called Sheridan around part of Badminton “although admittedly not over any of the cross-country jumps”.

Mary said: “I am truly thrilled to take on the role of equine ambassador for Blue Cross. I have immense respect for their welfare and rehoming work and hope that I will be able to help raise their profile in many ways.

“I am particularly excited about spreading the word about this year’s Christmas Dinner project which aims to make sure all the horses at the Blue Cross Burford centre get some festive spirit and plenty of love on Christmas day.”

Senior horse rehoming manager Rosie Mogford said: “We are honoured and excited that Mary has agreed to become our first ever equine ambassador. She is one of the most accomplished and admired riders in equestrian sport and we could not wish for a better representative to support our welfare work.”

Blue Cross runs two horse welfare centres in Oxfordshire and Staffordshire where neglected, abandoned and unwanted horses and ponies are rehabilitated and then rehomed. The charity also operates a Home Direct scheme to help owners find suitable new homes for their horses, if they can no longer keep them.

The Christmas Dinner project is a scheme launched by the charity to provide pets with a “hearty Christmas Dinner”. Blue Cross is asking for a donation of £1 to help fill a horse’s bowl this Christmas.

Owners across the country are being giving the opportunity to nominate their horses or ponies for a welfare charity’s annual award.

Blue Cross is calling for stories about “hero” pets as nominations open online for the 2019 Blue Cross Medal.

The Blue Cross Medal has celebrated “inspirational” pets for almost 80 years. The award was first given in 1949 to a dog called La Cloche, who saved his owner from drowning during World War II after a German torpedo hit their ship.

The award is open to all animals and the winner will be decided by a panel of judges including soap actress Hayley Tamaddon and Dr Dawn from TV programme Embarrassing Bodies.

Blue Cross chief executive Sally de la Bedoyere said: “Pets are amazing, they help us in so many ways, from rescuing us from loneliness to teaching us new things, and even saving lives. The Blue Cross Medal is a wonderful way to draw attention to the incredible things our pets do for us every day and to celebrate them. We’re very excited to hear all the amazing stories to be sent through and can’t wait to pick the next medal winner.”

A tiny foal found “terrified and in terrible condition” in the back of a car filled with a group of youths has learned to trust again in a loving new home.

Shetland Gary was found by police who pulled the car over early this year, and sent to the Blue Cross’s Burford centre in Oxfordshire.

His traumatic early life had “taken its toll”, the charity said, adding: “Not only was Gary thin and in terrible condition, he was merely a shell of what a happy, inquisitive foal should be.

“Shut down and preferring to be alone, he just stood sad and forlorn in his stable for days after his arrival.”

Blue Cross rehoming co-ordinator Emily Lambert said Gary was terrified of people.

“He would do anything to get away from you, or would sometimes just stand there, close his eyes and put his head to the floor as if he was thinking: ‘ If I can’t see you then you can’t see me’,” she said.

“We had to spend a very long time just sitting in the stable with him, trying to get him used to us being in the same space. If he looked at us we would reward him with a treat. It took about three weeks before we were able to start approaching him with touch.”

The Blue Cross team then worked to familiarise Gary with everything from wearing a headcollar to visits from the farrier.

And thanks to their efforts, the Shetland gradually came round, to the point he would play with other horses and greet his carers when they approached. Then the charity started looking for a suitable new home, where he would “get the love he deserved”.

“Luckily, Louise Coulson was scanning the Blue Cross website at just the right time in her search for a friend for her miniature pony Zebby, who had lost his own companion, Dolly, a few months before,” a charity spokesman said.

“Soon, after more than three-and-a-half months in Blue Cross care, Gary was on his way to start his new life in the Suffolk countryside with Louise and her husband Richard.”

Louise and Richard also had to work hard to earn the pony’s trust as he was “very, very scared” of new people.

“But nearly six months on, Gary is unrecognisable from the traumatised, terrified and withdrawn foal he once was,” the spokesman said. He happily trots around his field with pal Zebby, greets new people with confidence and takes most aspects of life in his stride.

“There are still things he’s scared of, but the bond he has with Louise is unbreakable, and with her by his side he has become very brave in approaching situations that could be frightening.”

22 ‘Beatrix Potter’ Shetlands found in ‘horrific’ conditions on road to recovery

A group of 22 Shetland ponies named after Beatrix Potter characters have been nursed back to health after they were found in appalling conditions.

The ponies were found in Leicestershire earlier this year, belly-deep in mud, with no food or water. Sadly, some had to be put down due to the severity of their condition.

Following the successful prosecution of their owner for neglect, the surviving 22 Shetlands were taken to Blue Cross’s rehoming centre in Oxfordshire.

Vicki Alford, horse manager at the Blue Cross rehoming centre in Burford, said it was “heart-breaking” to see the sad state the ponies were in on their arrival.

“All had overgrown and curled-up hooves, were riddled with lice and very underweight,” she said.

“The transporter who brought them to Burford described the place where they were found as horrific – apparently there was no food or water and they were stood in mud up to their tummies. How they survived is anyone’s guess.

“After love and care from the team here many have already gone to new homes and we couldn’t be happier to see them go to loving new families where they can live a happy life.”

Blue Cross Burford’s equine unit is currently under lockdown after a rescued Shetland showed signs of strangles a month after arrival.

Skewbald youngster Little Timmy Tiptoes had already undergone the standard four-week isolation period for new arrivals when he showed signs of illness.

The 90cm Shetland was suffering from a severe nasal discharge and had a dangerously high temperature of 41 degrees.

After being admitted to the local veterinary practice as an emergency, he was screened for strangles and both a blood test and a nasal swab proved positive. He was also suffering from anaemia, which has compromised his ability to fight the infection.

The pony was originally rescued by the RSPCA before being taken in by the Oxfordshire rehabilitation and rehoming centre last month.

Blue Cross Burford’s horse manager Vicki Alford said: “On arrival Timmy was in a really sad state. He had overgrown and curled up hooves, was riddled with lice and very underweight.

“The transporter who brought him to Burford described the place where he was found as horrific — apparently there was no food or water and they were stood in mud up to their tummies. How they survived is anyone’s guess.”

Biosecurity: how to protect your horse from diseases

Following Timmy’s diagnosis, the Blue Cross implemented their disease outbreak protocol to prevent the strangles from spreading.

The highly contagious bacterial respiratory infection is transmitted though direct contact with an infected horse or indirectly through contamination in the surrounding area.

The equine section of the Burford centre is currently closed to the public, with strict biosecurity measures in place. The small animal centre for dogs, cats and small pets remains open.

“Timmy is now back at the Burford Centre and is much brighter. His temperature is back to normal and the nasal discharge has cleared but he’s not out of the woods yet,” Vicky added.

“He is in still in isolation, but we hope our stringent bio-security will have stopped an outbreak it in its tracks and that the horse unit will be up and running again soon.”

April hopes her namesake month with bring her new loving owners after tough past

A pony found “crawling with lice and infested with worms” is looking for a loving new home.

The Blue Cross hopes that April’s namesake month will be the one in which she finds her rehomer.

The chestnut mare was “battling the odds for survival” when she was taken in by the animal welfare charity as a “pitifully underweight, parasite-infested” yearling.

Three years on, she is difficult to recognise from the youngster she once was and is ready to find a new home where she can fulfil her potential to become a riding pony.

“April was crawling with lice and infested with worms when she arrived at Blue Cross in 2015,” said a charity spokesman.

“With a body condition score of just 1.5 she was a tragic sight and was terrified of human contact.”

Marie Kavanagh, horse rehoming coordinator at Blue Cross Rolleston, said staff had to win April’s confidence.

“We had to train her to be caught and handled before we could treat her”, she said.

“Her condition was so poor that had she not come to us when she did it’s unlikely she would have survived much longer in the circumstances in which she was found.”

Following treatment, April was placed in a short-term home to enjoy growing up with other youngsters.

She became used to dogs and children, as well as staying calm when being treated by the farrier and the vet.

“April really blossomed in her short-term home,” added Ms Kavanagh. “It’s put her in good stead for the next phase of her life, which is to find a project home.

“She is a calm, clever pony and shows every promise of becoming a super riding pony.”

April is one of several ponies at the Blue Cross centre in Rolleston, Staffordshire, looking for homes. Her fieldmates Beastie and Tristan both came from Bodmin Moor, where they had never been touched by humans and had to fend for themselves.

“They are now very sociable and comfortable with being left alone for short periods so would make excellent companions for a ridden horse,” added a charity spokesman.

Foal found tiny and scared stars with X Factor singer in photoshoot

A foal who was found fly-grazing and struggling to survive last summer has now found herself in the spotlight after becoming one of the stars of a celebrity portrait series by renowned photographer Rankin.

The photos, taken for the Blue Cross to celebrate the impact pets have on our lives, featured show business supporters of the charity, some paired with their own rescue animals.

Comedian Jimmy Carr was snapped with his Blue Cross-adopted dog Marnie and Emmerdale actress Emily Head with her rescued kitten Stevie, chestnut filly Emerald was paired with singer Diana Vickers.

The little pony was just a tiny, scared foal when she was rescued with her mother, and was nursed back to health by the team at Blue Cross. She has now been rehomed with a family in Shropshire.

Staff reported that Emerald behaved impeccably during her photo session and Rankin was captivated by her photogenic look and laid-back attitude.

“Emerald was so frightened when she arrived we were so very proud of how far she has come in her training and how well she handled the photo shoot,” said Grace Shayler, training supervisor at Blue Cross.

Diana Vickers, who rose to fame as an X-Factor contestant in 2008, said she could not imagine life without her pets.

“My cat Kiki fills my heart with joy and I love her. It was wonderful to take part in a photography project which celebrates the way so many different kinds of pets enrich and bring happiness to our lives and homes,” she said.

Other famous faces who participated in the shoot included Miranda Richardson (Blackadder, ITV Girlfriends), Anthony Head (Buffy, Little Britain, Girlfriends), Joanna Scanlan (The Thick of It, C4), Michelle Collins (Eastenders) and Issac Hempstead-Wright (Game of Thrones).

Rankin said: “Pets change our lives. I know mine certainly have and that is why I wanted to join forces with Blue Cross and their famous friends and through this series of unique portraits, inspire people to give back to pets in need for the amazing, enriching and wonderful roles pets play in our lives.”

Traumatised pony finds new home in time for Christmas

A pony rescued from a farm where the owner beat his horses in cattle crushes has found a new home after two years of rehabilitation.

Swift, a nine-year-old bay native pony was one of the most nervous cases the Blue Cross has taken in.

The pony has spent two years at the charity’s rehoming centre in Burford, Oxfordshire.

“Swift had never known love and care before she arrived at Blue Cross,” said Vicki Alford, the charity’s rehoming manager.

“The team have taken things very slowly with her and have trained her using positive reinforcement, with food rewarding the desired behaviour. Thanks to their love and care, Swift has progressed really well,” she added.

Groom Anna Bissett used clicker training as part of the rehabilitation, as the pony was unhandable when she arrived. The pair have built up a great bond.

“She’s a super, sweet pony, but because of her past she’s still very nervous,” said Miss Bissett.

Swift moved to her new home with Jenni Nellist, a clinical animal behaviourist working with horses in Wales, on Wednesday 20 December.

Swift is living with her two Welsh Cobs Penny and Bronwen and her other loan pony, Kitty on a four-acre field rented from the local Wildlife Trust.

In the New Year Miss Nellist is planning to start weekly “learning with Swift days” to give people training to be animal behaviourists practical experience.

The pony will stay with her for three months after which she hopes she will go to one of her client’s who is looking for a pony for conservation grazing.

“Swift is great with her groom Anna, but now needs further training in a low-key way to understand not all people are out to get her,” said Miss Nellist.
