Never has one rider’s new horse got people talking as much as John Whitaker’s potential Olympic hope Arqana De Riverland and the pair’s sublime clear round at CHI Al Shaqab in Doha at the weekend was shared all over social media as they continue to step up to the bigger classes.

Plus, we saw a 16-year-old rider clearing 1.85m to win her first CSI4* and a 24-year-old beating two Olympic legends in a World Cup qualifier, where the world number one rider bounced back from a warm-up fall to finish second. Read on for all this week’s showjumping news and results.

Showjumping news: “She’s going to be really competitive” says John Whitaker

A video of John Whitaker jumping clear on new ride Arqana De Riverland – touted as a prospect to take the 68-year-old to the Paris Olympics – was circulating far and wide on social media this week, such is the global love for our British showjumping legend. Their clear round at the CSI5* Al Shaqab in Doha was shared alongside hundreds of appreciation posts for John as they stepped up to 1.50m level at just their third show together, and he told H&H the mare was “jumping very well”.

“She’d been with her previous rider Juliette Faligot for seven years so she was a bit set in her ways, but she jumps brilliantly – just sometimes we don’t have that control yet and there’s been the odd misunderstanding, but I think we’re coming together more and more,” he said. “She’s really careful, she’s quick and I think she’s going to be really competitive.”

John also jumped into the placings with two masterful double clears on his Nations Cup hero Equine America Unick Du Francport at the show, including a fifth-placed finish behind winner Malin Baryard Johnsson (H&M Indiana) in the grand prix.

“He has had a rest and seems to have come back really well, we just did a couple of small shows in Belgium before we came out here and to get used to the mare too,” said John. “You walk the courses out here thinking ‘Oh this is big’, then everyone goes in and jumps clear. But he feels fantastic.”

Ireland’s Richard Howley was another rider making showjumping news by finishing in the ribbons, landing the 1.50m with nine-year-old multi-winner Zodiak Du Buisson Z.

“I am absolutely over the moon,” he said. “My horse is in great shape, he is really growing into this level so easily and week after week he is impressing me more. This gives me great belief for the future that my horse can win at grand prix level.”

Richard finished ahead of France’s Simon Delestre (Dexter Fontenis Z) and Mark McAuley in third on GRS Lady Amaro for Ireland.

The action continues at the same venue this coming week when the 2024 Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) season kicks off.

Teenager clears 1.85m to beat her older rivals

The youngest rider in the 12-strong field contesting Saturday’s six-bar on the Andalucia Sunshine Tour in Spain, British teenager Tabitha Kyle, smashed the opposition, throwing both hands in the air as she celebrated clearing 1.85m to win her first ever CSI4* class.

Tabitha, 16, was riding Su and Gordon Hall’s 16-year-old mare Desterly at her first international show after recovering from a neck fracture sustained in a car accident which meant she missed the last few months of 2023, her last year on ponies.

Home-bred secures “unbelievable” World Cup glory for 24-year-old rider

Dutch showjumper Lars Kersten made showjumping news headlines as a surprise winner of the final leg of the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup series of Western Europe in Gothenburg, Sweden, riding grey mare Hallilea. World number one Henrik von Eckermann bounced back from a collecting ring fall to claim the runner-up spot on King Edward, with fellow Swede Peder Fredricson third on 18-year-old Catch Me Not S after a seven-way jump-off.

The 24-year-old Dutchman, part of the Young Riders Academy, is trained by his father Pieter and was riding his father’s 12-year-old home-bred mare to beat two of the greatest Olympic riders in the world in a thrilling jump-off.

“That makes it even more special – I’ve been working with Hallilea all her life and she has been a big part of my career,” said Lars. “To grow together to this level and to win a World Cup in Gothenburg is unbelievable.

“The moment she turned five, I took her over and it’s special that we’ve done this journey together. We already had some nice placings, but almost nothing beats winning the World Cup here in Gothenburg – it feels a bit unreal!

“I’ve seen Henrik and Peder in so many jump-offs so I know they are capable of being faster than me,” he added. “To sit in front of these guys is not easy and most of the time I will be behind them, so today is a big, big day. But I think I was pretty fast and in the end it showed that it was not that easy to beat me, so I’m very, very pleased with my mare. She absolutely gave 100% today.”

Lars has also had training from his “idol growing up”, Marcus Ehning, and six-time Olympian Jos Lansink.

“I was told the Scandinavium Arena wasn’t an easy ring to ride in, but I found it quite comfortable,” he said.“Maybe it fits my riding, I’m maybe a bit of a light rider and I try to stay fluent throughout the turns, so actually maybe the [oval] shape of it suited me very well. And obviously the horse felt really great as well so it all came together.”

Henrik’s jump-off performance came only minutes after he slipped out of the saddle on landing over a warm-up fence on King Edward during the preceding rider’s round. Ever the professional, he put his unscheduled dismount behind him and his world championship-winning partner scorched round, but couldn’t quite catch the time set by the young winner.

“Maybe my horse jumped too well in the jump-off and he lost a bit of time,” Henrik said. “But this is a good way to lose.”

Peder Fredricson batted off questions about Paris this summer by saying, “Asking me about the Olympics in February is like asking how the weather will be in August! We are building up the horses but there is still a long way to go. It is for sure my main goal this year. I am giving all my horses in the stables a chance now and we will see in the next months how it is going.

“Lars is a great rider. It is nice to see the next generation doing so well.”

Among the top 18 riders who have qualified for the World Cup Final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in April are title-holder Henrik von Eckermann, who topped this year’s league, Steve Guerdat, Ireland’s Richard Howley and a quartet of British showjumpers; Robert Whitaker, Harry Charles, Scott Brash and Ben Maher.

Showjumping news: “Dreams really do come true”

British showjumper Claudia Moore proclaimed that “dreams really do come true” when winning her first CSI3* 1.50m grand prix in the final week of the Moura Spring Tour in Valencia, Spain, riding Hardesther. The only other double clear came from another Brit, Chloe Aston, riding the Arko III nine-year-old Akito Von Rocherath Z.

“’Hardy’ is my horse of a lifetime, I trust her and didn’t overpush her as she’s naturally fast,” said Claudia, one of a strong contingent of British winners at this week’s show.

There’s just no stopping Daniel Coyle, “I stared death in the face at the Liverpool”

Continuing a phenomenal winning streak, Irish rider Daniel Coyle made more showjumping news when he lifted the CSI3* $100,000 LeMieux grand prix at the World Equestrian Center, Ocala, Florida, this time riding Farrel, after a 15-way jump-off.

“On Farrel, you can turn on half a stride,” said Daniel of the 14-year-old KWPN gelding (Cardento 933 x Stakkato) owned by Ariel Grange.

“He’s an amazing horse to turn back to a vertical. He’s had a few years off but he’s very handy. Turning back so tight to the second-last jump, that’s all to do with the horse there. [Second-placed] Aaron Vale and I both took risks, but at the end it comes back to the horse and if you can nail it.

“I galloped to fence one and hoped everything came up good, I was really risky across the centre to the Liverpool – I couldn’t see the flags and I stared death in the face, but he pricked his ears and jumped it.

“The celebration in the end is the only part of the sport when we get to interact with the crowd,” added Daniel about his third win of this week; he also finished third behind Aaron Vale (Obi Wan) on another 14-year-old, Quintin. “It’s usually just the horse, the owners and the people, so when the audience comes out screaming and are having a great time, it makes it so special for us.”

Showjumping news: Vogel has the magic Touch again

Germany’s Richard Vogel, ranked 11 in the world, and United Touch S captured top spot in the $385,000 Lugano Diamonds CSI5* grand prix at Wellington International’s Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) after a four-way jump-off in which the quartet all produced double clears over Anthony D’Ambrosio’s tracks.

“I have been lucky enough to ride a lot of good horses in my life, but he’s outstanding,” said Richard. “When he leaves the ground, that power and scope is something very unique and I’m very happy to be in his saddle.”

Darragh Kenny had set the early standard on 17-year-old Holstein stallion VDL Cartello before the lead jumped first to US Olympic team gold medallist McLain Ward on 16-year-old Callas and Shane Sweetnam on James Kann Cruz, back from a break, settled for third.

“I was very lucky that I went behind all three of these guys, and I knew I had to risk it all,” said 26-year-old Richard, whose groom Felicia Wallin won the $500 grooms’ award presented by Double H Farm. “If I had a rail, I was fourth and if I was a slow clear, I was fourth so there was not so much to lose.”

Ben Maher is back at the top

And finally in this week’s international showjumping news round-up, world number two Ben Maher won the $116,000 Adequan WEF Challenge Cup round seven at WEF with Dallas Vegas Batilly, with less than a second separating the top three riders.

“I’m lucky with Tilly – she has a huge stride, so I was able to get going and make up some time,” said Ben, 41. “It was lucky for me that I stayed ahead today. It’s always difficult to win here, whether on Thursday or Saturday night. When you have riders like Kent Farrington and Richard Vogel coming behind you, it’s never over until it’s over.

“She’s been an incredible horse early in her career. She jumped great in the five-star a couple weeks ago and I felt she was on form, which is why we brought her back this week.

“My 18-month-old son Cooper can sit on her and she’s the sweetest horse ever. But when you’re on her, she has a lot of opinions. I have to be the passenger, not the pilot, and get her to do things by asking her, not telling her. We’ve come with a great relationship, and I want to bring out the best in her. We saw today that she’s a real fighter for me.”

Young showjumping superstar Tabitha Kyle is “counting down the days” until she is back in the saddle after she fractured her neck in a “hit and run” car accident.

Tabitha was due to contest her last Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) on ponies this week, but has had to miss it as a result of the accident. Her father Mark told H&H the fracture is stable, and it is hoped Tabitha will be able to ride in five weeks’ time.

“Unfortunately I was a passenger in a hit and run car accident while competing in the Netherlands last weekend,” Tabitha said.

“I sustained a neck fracture which is stable and I have full feeling and motion. I will be out of action until I make a full recovery. Thank you for all the help, support and kind messages I have received so far. Counting down the days until I’m back riding already.”

Mark said Tabitha is back home. She had an X-ray this morning (5 October), and has more scans booked in three and five weeks’ time.

“She’s fine,” he said, adding that although Tabitha was sorry to miss HOYS, she has already won all the pony titles on offer, over the years; had she been missing one, it would have been more disappointing.

“She’s itching to get back,” he said. “Hopefully five weeks and it’ll be ok – and it could have been a lot worse.”

We had a bumper weekend of international showjumping news and results from around the world this week. As Irish showjumper Shane Sweetnam said after helping his country win team silver at the European Showjumping Championships this month when reflecting on Ireland’s success at the recent European youth championships, “The future looks good for us. World domination isn’t too far away!”

This was underlined at this week’s Nations Cup Youth Final in Belgium where Ireland added yet another gold to their growing medal haul and Great Britain added to their collection, too.

Talking of world domination, world champions King Edward and the world number one Henrik von Eckermann were back doing what they do best, this time claiming victory in a sweltering Longines Global Champions Tour grand prix of Rome.

Showjumping news: Team gold for Ireland’s pony riders

At the FEI Jumping Nations Cup Youth Final at Sentower Park, Opglabbeek, Belgium, Ireland’s pony team won team gold, with Belgium taking silver and Great Britain bronze. Kian Dore (Sparkling Lackaghmore Joey), Emily Moloney with Lady Crown, Paddy Reape on Fernando and James Derwin (Rincoola Babog) won on a score of four, thanks to a hat-trick of final clears when the team was down to all three scores needing to count.

“There’s no secret, success breeds success,” said Irish chef d’equipe Gary Marshall, adding of the committed investment to training in ponies: “We have a team system at home.”

The British quartet of Izabella Rogers (Neil 55), Georgia Cooper-Hall on Saxton Freedam, Katie Bradburne riding Ardough Boy and Madison Seedhouse (Vaughann De Vuzit) claimed bronze with a team score of 12.

“We were a little unlucky in both rounds with silly four faults adding up but I was pleased with them, Katie was very good on her first trip away,” said chef d’equipe Clare Whitaker.

Ireland’s juniors also won silver (pictured above), where the Netherlands brought home gold after a tense jump-off. This time Eoin Brennan (Eskola M), Stephen Gibbons (Cassius Z), James Brennan (MHS I’m The One) and Coen Williams (Conthanja) flew the Irish flag. They were joined on the podium by bronze medal-winning USA.

The young rider gold went to Sweden, topping Denmark and Belgium on the podium, while the Netherlands brought home gold for the juniors; the Dutch claimed another victory in the children’s competition, with Belgium in silver and Italy in bronze.

Why a tack change backfired for the world number one

In Italy, Swedish world number one Henrik von Eckermann and the world-conquering King Edward triumphed in spectacular style in the €440,000 Longines Global Champions Tour grand prix of Rome for the second year running. Against the backdrop of the historic ruins of the Circus Maximus, this incredible duo took top spot ahead of David Will riding My Prins Van Dorperheide, with two riders sharing the third step on the podium – Peder Fredricson (Catch Me Not S) and Andreas Schou (I Know), who both stopped the jump-off clock in 42.27sec.

Many will remember King Edward’s uncharacteristically lacklustre performances at the LGCT of London and Henrik believes a tack change may have backfired.

“I had two shows that were not that great with King Edward,” explained Henrik. “I lost a bit of the feeling and there were a couple of things, like I changed to a hackamore, and I just had the feeling that something is not really like it should be. I was almost getting a bit crazy because you know how it should feel, but you don’t really ‘get it’.”

Henrik expressed his delight at getting ‘that’ feeling back in Rome.

“Of course, winning is amazing, but that feeling you get when you are back and the horse is with you 100%, that team is back… that is everything,” he said.

As both Henrik and runner-up David had already claimed their golden tickets to the LGCT Super Grand Prix at the GC Prague Playoffs, the slot was bestowed on both Peder and Andreas, which Peder, who has recently returned from a neck injury, said he “certainly didn’t see that one coming”.

“I was very happy about that!” he said.

Tabitha Kyle makes showjumping news with a double of grands prix

Also at the FEI Nations Cup Youth Final in Belgium, 16-year-old Tabitha Kyle won a total of six classes, including the pony grand prix riding Atomic Du Bary, where she also finished third on Gangnam Style II, separated by Ireland’s Senan Reape on Catness 8. She also claimed top spot in the junior grand prix on another owned by TJ Hall, the 15-year-old mare Desterly.

“I couldn’t ask for more, I’m very happy,” said Tabitha, who was joined on the winner’s sheet by team-mate Jennifer Billington and the six-year-old Sualire Z racing to victory in the 1.30m grand prix, Noora von Bulow, who won an under-25 double with Interstar B and Lucky Lisa, where Phoebe Farman and Diara Sue slotted into second place, and multi-winning Izabella Rogers in the pony classes where Ruby Payne also secured a two-phase on Calimero.

Showjumping news: ‘I had a good feeling all weekend’

German showjumper Christian Kukuk and Checker 47 (main image, top) triumphed in the 1.50m speed class at the LGCT Rome, just ahead of in-form Peder Fredricson riding Hansson WL.

“I had a good feeling all weekend but have been a little bit unlucky,” said Christian. “In this class I knew that the oxer of Lugano Diamonds had plenty of risk as the rail fell for a few riders, but I took the risk and it really paid off.”

European champion rolls on to grand prix glory

Just two weeks after claiming the European championship crown, gold medallist Steve Guerdat won the CSI3* grand prix at Samorin, Slovakia, riding Double Jeu D’Honvault as the fastest of four double clears.

Whitakers go close in Saint Tropez

Our showjumping news round-up wouldn’t be complete without a mention for the Whitaker family. The CSI3* 1.55m grand prix at Hubside Jumping, Saint Tropez, was won by Dutch rider Johnny Pals on Zarkava Hero Z with Great Britain’s Jack Whitaker chasing him home for the runner-up spot on the family’s great campaigner Equine America Valmy De La Lande. Jack’s cousin Donald Whitaker finished third in the two-star equivalent riding Ulania 3.

Gredley back in form

Also in showjumping news this week, Great Britain’s Tim Gredley jumped the really promising 10-year-old Imperial HBF to a third-place finish in the CSI2* grand prix at Bonheiden, Belgium, also finishing in the money in the young horse classes with Tres Bien Z.

Sun, sea and showjumping… Saint-Tropez tops the list as one of the most glamorous sporting locations and we were treated to an epic grand prix jump-off there, on Saturday (3 June) for the Longines Global Champions Tour, which was topped by two barefoot horses.

But action continued across the globe, including top league Nations Cup events in Switzerland and Canada, while junior riders also flew the British flag in style. Here is your round-up of all this week’s international showjumping news and results.

A barefoot one-two in grand prix

At the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of St Tropez, Ramatuelle, a duo of barefoot horses battled it out for top honours against the clock with French showjumper Julien Epaillard snatching victory aboard Donatello D’Auge, and Christian Kukuk claiming second on Mumbai, just 0.44sec adrift. Both horses have had their shoes removed and are proving incredibly successful.

“This horse is just fantastic, the atmosphere at this show is amazing and this is one of my best victories I think,” said Julien, who qualified for the LGCT Super Grand Prix.

“It’s not so easy to win a Longines Global Champions Tour grand prix and we work every day for this, so when this happens we can enjoy it.”

Christian added: “It is not a shame to be beaten by Julien Epaillard; he is one of the fastest riders on our circuit and I was very close.”

Great Britain’s Scott Brash took fifth, having hit the final fence in the five-way jump-off riding Hello Jefferson, while Lily Attwood finished runner-up in a five-star class on day one riding Karibou Horta.

“Of course, I would have liked to have won but I’m super pleased with how Horton’s feeling,” she said.

Victory for Harry Charles

At the CSI5* St Gallen, Switzerland, the British team of Donald Whitaker (Millfield Colette), Tim Gredley (Medoc De Toxandria), Joe Stockdale (Equine America Cacharel) and Harry Charles on Casquo Blue finished a valiant fourth to winners Switzerland in the Nations Cup. Harry had started the show with a 1.50m win on Ann Thompson’s Aralyn Blue and the in-form rider went on to finish third in the grand prix riding Romeo 88, who just lost his footing on a turn during an electric jump-off, where victory went to Harrie Smolders riding Uricas VD Kattevennen for the Netherlands.

Showjumping news: Ireland beats home nation at Thunderbird

In Canada, Ireland came out top in the Longines FEI Nations Cup at Thunderbird Show Park. A win would have qualified Canada for the Nations Cup final in Barcelona in October but they had to settle for second. The Irish squad of Shane Sweetnam (James Kann Cruz), David Blake (Claude), Daniel Coyle (Gisborne VDL) and Conor Swail (Nadal Hero & DB) won with a score of four.

“It was a sweet victory, because we knew Canada had a really strong team,” said Irish chef d’equipe Michael Blake. “The luck went our way and it all worked out.”

There were only two double clears, from Shane Sweetnam and Erynn Ballard of Canada riding Gakhir.

“This is tough sport. It’s difficult and you’re always putting your best foot forward,” said Shane, who was trying a new bit with the 10-year-old gelding. “You’re trying your best for the team. We have a great team spirit and we wanted to win.”

• CSIO5* Thunderbird Show Park results

‘He was faster and I said ‘whaaat’!

When Brazil and Switzerland tied for top spot after two rounds of the Nations Cup in the St Gallen, Switzerland, a thrilling jump-off ensued between home hero Martin Fuchs riding Leoni Jei and Brazil rider Yuri Mansur on Miss Blue-Sain Blue Farm QH. Martin sealed Switzerland’s second win in a row on home soil with a clear round in 42.14sec while Yuri rocketed round quicker, only to hit the final fence, finishing in 41.84sec – although the Swiss rider hadn’t seen the fence fall.

“I couldn’t even watch the last fence because I was looking at the time on the clock hoping Yuri would be slower,” said Martin. “The clock stopped and he was faster and I was ‘whaaaat’!

“I have to say congrats to team Brazil and Yuri Mansur for really making it so exciting for everyone.”

Martin was joined by Edouard Schmitz, Bryan Balsiger and Steve Guerdat on top of the podium.

• CSI5* St Gallen results

British podium finishes

Claudia Moore led a brilliant succession of British grand prix placings over the weekend, winning the CSI2* at Sancourt, France, riding Hardesther. Joe Clayton and Belinda finished runners-up in the equivalent grand prix in Saint Tropez, while William Funnell and Equine America Billy Marmite finished third in the CSI3* grand prix of Cabourg, France, and Robert Murphy also secured a grand prix podium finish riding Comme Cornet in the Netherlands.

Scott Brash helps GCL team triumph

Global Champions League Team New York Empire won the Saint-Tropez leg of the series, courtesy of a lightning quick finish from Scott Brash on Hello Jefferson, and US team-mate Spencer Smith riding Theodore Manciais. This was the team’s first success since 2019.

“This is fantastic for the whole team, we are delighted for Georgina Bloomberg, she’s really backed the GCL for many years so it is brilliant to get a win for the New York Empire,” said Scott. “Both rounds were big, and both rounds were tough, as we saw with no teams on double clear. “

In another noteworthy moment, Great Britain’s Ben Maher notched up an incredible 60th clear round in the GCL series.

Juniors jump to victory

And finally in this week’s showjumping news round-up, Great Britain’s junior Nations Cup team triumphed at the Youth Festival in the Netherlands. The squad of Lauren Caroline, Tabitha Kyle, Olivia Banks and Noora Von Bulow won after a four-way jump-off against Sweden, Germany and Belgium. Ireland’s pony squad of Abbie Oakey, Annie Boland, Chloe Hughes Kennedy and Emily Moloney also found the winning formula. Also on ponies, Harriet Hodge of Great Britain went on to win the grand prix riding Little Charlie, with Madison Seedhouse second with Vaughann De Vuzit.

Making the headlines among this week’s showjumping results were some exceptional young horses at the FEI WBFSH World Breeding Championships, a victorious British pony team and a raft of winners from the Unex Competition Yard in Saint Tropez.

For John Whitaker fans, there was a moment to savour in front of the New York skyline, where Daniel Deusser also chalked up the incredible achievement of back-to-back five-star grands prix. A landmark first international win also came for 39-year-old Matthew Boddy, so congratulations to him.

Here is your weekly round-up of international action from the world of showjumping over the past week.

John Whitaker wins in front of the Statue of Liberty

Yorkshire’s very own John Whitaker saved the best for last when closing the Longines Global Champions Tour of New York with a sizzling five-star win aboard Equine America Unick Du Francport. With 10 combinations qualifying for the jump-off, this was always going to be a red-hot finale and, against the backdrop of the New York city skyline, fourth-drawn John (pictured above) flew home quickest, to beat Egypt’s Nayel Nassar riding El Conde.

“I am absolutely delighted,” said John, one of only three double clears. “This is such a special location and venue with the iconic Statue of Liberty behind us. We have come a long way, so to finish like this is top.

“Nayel was quick so when I beat him I knew I had a chance.”

World finals showcase Irish breeding…

The FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championships for Young Horses at Lanaken in Belgium once again put the spotlight on some exceptional Irish bloodlines, with both the five- and six-year-old finals won by Irish-bred youngsters.

The six-year-old title went to the outstanding Kannan mare ABC Saving Grace, ridden by Ethen Ahearne (pictured above) and bred by Patrick Kehoe out of Cruising mare Ardnehue Diamond Cruiser. Grace is a half-sister to the former Harry Charles ride ABC Quantum Cruise.

“I got ABS Saving Grace in November when I started my own stable and competed her for the first time in February or March,” said Ethen, who was making his debut at these world championships. “But so far she has only jumped at national level and last month in Dublin we were able to qualify for this World Championship. So this was actually the first time we competed at international level.”

A total of 40 combinations had qualified for this six-year-old final, with 14 jumping clear in round one, and the runner-up spot went to Garance De Vains, by Diamant De Semilly, ridden by Valentin Pacaud for France from breeder Christian Bihl. British rider Alex Gill had two horses through to the jump-off and took the bronze medal riding the VDL Stud’s KWPN gelding Lacoste VDL (VDL Zirocco Blue x Indoctro).

… With a tremendous five-year-old also taking centre stage

The five-year-old champion at the FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championships for Young Horses was BP Goodfellas (Stakkato Gold x Obos Quality), bred by Kevin Babington and ridden by Ger O’Neill, who only took the reins four weeks earlier.

“I have nothing but admiration for this horse,” said Ger, who has won two championships at Lanaken in recent years.

The 1.30m track was set by Eugene Mathy and 18 of the 47 finalists progressed to the jump-off, where Ger and the quality gelding came out from late draw to post the fastest clear in 40.12sec.

“He didn’t need, in retrospect, to jump the double with the speed at which I entered,” said the Irishman. “But he did a great job. He is a nice horse to ride with a real winner’s mentality. I also rode his mother [Goodwins Loyalty] a long time ago, so that makes a nice story. And I expect this is only the first chapter for BP Goodfellas.”

If at first you don’t succeed… First international success for Matthew Boddy

In New York, the CSI2* grand prix presented by Champagne Piaff at the Longines Global Champions Tour was won by British rider Matthew Boddy and the 14-year-old gelding Chameur 137, owned by Purple Road LLC (pictured in action, above). The pair were the fastest of just two double clears. This win was a landmark for the 39-year-old rider as it was his first international success.

“I owe so much to Georgina Bloomberg and [trainer] Jimmy Doyle; I’m not doing this without them,” said Matthew, who works for Georgina’s Gotham Enterprizes. “Representing them makes me proud as anything. I’ve been trying for two and a half years to win for them and I’ve been knocking on the door for a long time.

“I thought my mum and dad were going to have a heart attack at home! It’s a great first international win for me,” added Matthew, who was competing at only his second show on Chameur, who was previously ridden by Georgina. “Today was the result we wanted. We’ve been experimenting for a couple of days because I don’t really know him that well. We went in on the attack and it worked for us. He jumped so easy, nice and confident. It was cool to be here and win in New York, especially for Georgina. She’s so kind to me and gives me horses to ride. I like working for the team and wearing the badge.”

The runner-up spot went to US rider Emmanuelle Greenberg riding the 14-year-old Darco stallion Dublin Van Overis, while third was US-based British rider Amanda Derbyshire and her recent Hampton Classic victor Wonder If, a 10-year-old mare by Cevin Z owned by Gochman Sport Horse LLC. This pair produced the fastest jump-off time but with one rail down to beat fourth-placed finisher Mimi Gochman and Celina BH.

‘Icing on the cake’ for impressive Casall seven-year-old

The champion seven-year-old at the FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championship for Young Horses was the Casall-sired gelding Caillan, ridden by Sweden’s Rolf-Goran Bengtsson for owner-breeder Gerd Ohlsen. The runner-up was the Zangersheide stallion Dourkhan Hero Z, ridden by Christian Ahlmann, with Cornet Obolensky mare Precious Dwerse Hagen and Olivier Philippaerts of Belgium taking third.

Great Britain’s James Whitaker reached the jump-off with the quality son of Argento, Just Call Me Henry, to take seventh in this coveted final.

Rolf, who rode the great stallion Casall to a string of great international successes during an outstanding career together, and Caillan flew from penultimate draw to secure the world title.

“We have had an incredibly good year – we already won the championship in Holstein and Warendorf and this is really the icing on the cake,” said Rolf. “If I compare him to his sire, Caillan is more explosive on the jump than Casall, but of course he still has a long way to go to match his track record!”

There was a British victory in the seven-year-old consolation final courtesy of Joe Trunkfield riding Harry Whall’s Uriah 4, with the runner-up spot going to Billy Utah, by Cevin Z, ridden by Jessica Burke of Ireland.

Back-to-back grands prix for Daniel Deusser

Germany’s Daniel Deusser followed up on his success at the recent CP International at Spruce Meadows by making a triumphant return with Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z in the Longines Global Champions Tour grand prix of New York. Less than a second separated the quartet of jump-off contenders and the runner-up spot went to London victor Pieter Devos riding Mom’s Toupie De La Roque, with Sweden’s Malin Baryard-Johnsson third on H&M Indiana.

This was Tobago’s fourth show back after a break.

“I’m happy and proud that he is finally getting back into form and I hope to enjoy him a little longer,” said Daniel. “If it works out like that when you’re last to go in the jump-off and you finish in first place, then it’s always fun!”

The golden ticket to the LGCT Super Grand Prix in Prague passed to fourth-placed Irishman Shane Sweetnam on Alejandro.

“This is Alejandro’s second time qualifying for LGCT Super Grand Prix so that shows what a great horse he is,” said Shane. “He was close in Miami so I thought I had a chance of winning today. I am very excited to have qualified and very excited about today’s result.”

Ben Maher and Faltic HB took sixth in the grand prix with four faults in round one and the Brit now heads to the season final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, next month at the top of the overall season standings.

A triumphant British team

Great Britain’s pony team scooped victory in the FEI Youth Nations Cup Final in the Netherlands ahead of France and Ireland in a tight-scoring contest. The squad of Tabitha Kyle, who jumped the clinching double clear on Atomic Du Bary, Noora von Bulow on Elando Van De Eoshoeve, Harriet Hodge riding Little Charlie and Tilly Bamford (Lapislazuli) claimed victory on a score of six. Noora was also an individual winner on the pony small tour riding the 15-year-old mare Delflip and in the junior section with the prolific nine-year-old Interstar B, while Tabitha came home with a victorious four-timer with Oakley and the mare Nightgirl VH Sonnishof Z. Junior rider Eve McCoy also kept the British flag flying with a double of 1.30m win with her father Sir Anthony’s Cocktail D’Azur.

‘She’s going to be a big name for me’

The Irish flag flew proudly in New York, first for Eoin McMahon and the 16-year-old gelding Chacon, who triumphed in the opening CSI5* 1.45m two-phase at the Longines Global Champions Tour of New York.

“There were some spooky fences on the course today, but my horse handled it very well,” said Eoin of Madeleine Winter-Schulze’s Chacco-Blue son.

Chasing him home were German showjumper Hans-Dieter Dreher riding Cous Cous, with third place going to fellow Irishman Shane Breen and Haya, who went on to win Sunday’s CSI5* speed class (pictured above).

“She was fantastic in there,” said Shane of the 10-year-old KWPN mare (Mylord Cathargo x For Pleasure) he co-owns with Old Lodge and on whom he triumphed in the Queen’s Cup at the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead.

“She’s been wonderful all season. The plan is to build her up for the grands prix and, step by step, we’re getting there. Next year, she’s going to be a big name for me.

“I saw that they were doing seven strides quite easily to the last jump, so I thought if I kept up on the left-hand side, I could do six strides. I chanced it and it came off.”

He beat his fellow Irishman Darrah Kenny and Chic Chic into second.

Team Unex prove unstoppable in St Tropez

In the CSI1* classes at Hubside Jumping in St Tropez, the Gredleys’ Unex Competition Yard was again well represented in the winner’s circle with Rachel Gredley (pictured above) collecting red ribbons on both Jalanna and Hobalo. Rachel’s sister-in-law Polly landed a 1.25m one-two on Jimmy Mack V Berkenbroeck and Baloubelle and, not to be outdone, stable jockey Joe Clayton headed a class on Sunday with Belinda. This seals a phenomenal run of form for the team over the past three weeks in the south of France.

Rachel said of the 10-year-old Hobalo, who was previously ridden by her husband Tim Gredley: “I’ve only been riding Hobalo for two or three months. He is a very respectful, courageous horse and it is great to see him win a class today. I think he has the potential to go to higher classes, just like [London LGCT winner] Jalanna, who has been running very well for three weeks at Hubside Jumping.”

French showjumper Julien Gronin landed the CSI5* 1.60m grand prix jump-off riding the 13-year-old mare Valou Du Lys. He was chased home by Ireland’s Billy Twomey and the stallion Chat Botte ED. The two-star equivalent went to Lorenzo De Luca riding Poden Farms’ mare Dirka De Blondel. Italy’s Emanuele Gaudiano (pictured top soaring past a riskily parked red Ferrari) was also a multi-winner this week.

Prague Lions triumph in GCL

GCL team Prague Lions produced the sole double clear to triumph in the Global Champions League of New York, held on Governors Island. The squad was represented by Niels Bruynseels aboard Matador and Pieter Devos and the super barefoot mare Mom’s Toupie De La Roque and this was the Lions’ third success of the season. This also fast-tracked them to the semi-finals of the GC Super Cup in Prague in November. Stockholm Hearts and Berlin Eagles head to the final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, next month just one point apart at the top of the leader board.

French-bred triumphs in the Sires of the World

The prestigious Sires of the World Class at the FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championship for Young Horses was won by the Selle-Francais approved Kannan stallion Drako De Maugre, ridden by Germany’s Patrick Stühlmeyer. Belgium’s Gudrun Pateet took second on the eight-year-old Sea Coast Enjoy Z (Emerald x Parco).

“I’ve been riding this horse for a while but this is only our sixth competition together,” said Patrick of the winning nine-year-old. “I’m confident he has more in store for us.”

The highest placed British contenders were Louise Saywell with Ian Dowie’s nine-year-old Kinsborough Kasper, by Kannan, in a very creditable 12th.

Junior showjumper Tabitha Kyle has been taking Europe by storm the past fortnight – but it was a super save when she nearly fell off after jumping a joker fence that made the crowd’s jaws drop.

The 14-year-old had just cleared the final fence of the junior accumulator with Indiana D’Ayrifagne in Lamprechtshausen, Austria, on 6 May when she became unseated. As the eight-year-old mare galloped down the long side of the arena, Tabitha clung on before managing to re-establish herself in the saddle, much to the crowd’s delight.

“She is not only an amazing showjumper, she is also world-class in vaulting. Congratulations!,” said the commentator.

Tabitha, who went on to win the class of 32 combinations, told H&H 17.2hh “Indy” had taken a big leap over the fence, which caused Tabitha to lose her stirrup.

“The joker is way bigger than everything else and I wasn’t expecting her to take such a big jump over it. She spooked, which made her go higher, I lost my stirrup and when I landed and went to put my foot back in the stirrup I went past it, and I just kept going down – but I wasn’t letting go,” she said.

“I could hear the crowd going ‘oooh’ and all I was thinking was ‘Indy, please slow down!’ It’s quite a long way down from her. But it was funny and the crowd got quite loud once I stayed on.”

The win was Tabitha and Indy’s second of the show. She also scored wins with Desterly and Atomic Du Bary – who are all owned by Sue and Gordon Hall.

Tabitha had been at the event competing as part of the British pony Nations Cup squad alongside Sophie Evans, Izabella Rogers, and Madison Seedhouse. The British squad finished fourth.

The previous week, the pony team made up of Tabitha, Izabella, Sophie, Madison and Poppy Deakin, took silver at the Fontainebleau Nations Cup in France (28 April-1 May), one fence behind Belgium.

“It’s just a lovely thing to go out and do as a team because you’ve got all your friends with you,” said Tabitha, who won six out of six individual classes in France, including the grand prix with Gangnam Style II and a 1.25m class with Atomic Du Bary, in which they finished 11 seconds faster than the second-placed combination.

The young rider now has her eyes set on more Nations Cup appearances and hopes to be selected for the pony squad for the European Championships – but she has her GCSEs to tackle first as she balances studying and riding.

“My first exam is next week, I’ll be relieved to get them out of the way,” said Tabitha.

A 13-year-old who added her place in the senior Foxhunter final to her ticket to the junior final — as well as six other rides at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) — did so on a borrowed saddle, as all hers had been stolen hours before.

Tabitha Kyle finished second in the Foxhunter second round on Sunday (27 June) at Hickstead, on Gordon and Sue Hall’s 13-year-old mare Desterly I.

She had already qualified for the pony Foxhunter final, which she won last year on Teagan Arla Rose, on Dazaro, and has three rides each in the 138cm and the 148cm final at HOYS.

But her senior Foxhunter place looked doubtful on Sunday morning, when it was found that all four of her Butet saddles, worth about £4,000 each, had been taken from her tack locker.

“The locker was bolted to the stables, and had a bolt on it, but they cut through and took ours, and five from the people opposite,” said Tabitha’s mother Tanya.

“They have security patrolling, but these people know what they’re doing and who to target.”

The saddles were insured, and thanks to Sederholm, which distributes Butet, Tabitha had something to ride in.

“They were amazing,” Tanya said, adding that if the tack had to be stolen somewhere, it was “fortuitous” it was somewhere with a Butet stand on site. “I rang them at 7am and got them out of bed, and they came out, opened up the stand and lent her some saddles.”

The borrowed tack did the job, and Tabitha finished second, behind Joss Williams, on Rachel Heald’s Fourfields Dark Maxim, and in front of a host of professional adults.

“We’re thrilled, because that’s a big deal for a 13-year-old,” Tanya said. “That’s the third Foxhunter second round she’s done, and got to the third round, which is a good 1.45m, so it’s not as if it’s a fluke; she’s been knocking on the door.”

Tanya said the Halls, who also owned Holly Smith’s championship ride Hearts Destiny, bought the mare last autumn.

“The Halls have been amazing,” she said.

“We had to get her Foxhunter double clears; the first show we took her to, she jumped clear but it turned out she wasn’t registered so it didn’t count, and we had to start again after lockdown, but she got them quite quickly.”

Tabitha and Desterly have since found out they have been selected to represent Britain on the children-on-horses team at the youth European Championships this month (18-25 July).

“We’re thrilled about that too as it’s her last year in it,” Tanya said. “She was on the team when she was 11, and came fifth, so to be selected again is really exciting.”

Combining school with a stellar showjumping career isn’t easy, even with huge family support, but Tabitha Kyle’s ability and dedication are reaping rewards. Martha Terry meets her

The first time Tabitha Kyle attended an international show, she was just three weeks old. By five weeks she was on a road-trip to Thirlestane and Blair three-day events, her cradle the horsebox as her parents, top-flight riders Mark and Tanya, pursued their eventing careers. And 13 years on, little has changed on the competitive front, only now, she’s the protagonist.

“We’ve just had 15 competitions in 18 days; it’s exhausting,” says Tanya when we meet on a rare break from the circuit at their stables, Queenholme Equestrian, in Wymeswold, Leicestershire. “Tabitha still gets in the lorry and falls asleep, as she’s done since she was tiny. Otherwise the days are too long.”

Tabitha certainly packs a lot in. This year alone, she racked up 14 tickets for the British Showjumping Indoor Championship Finals which replaced the cancelled Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), and has won over 70 classes, including a grand prix four-timer on one heady day in Le Mans in July. Just 10 days ago, she backed up last year’s HOYS 128cm and 138cm double in clinching the 138cm title again, plus pony showjumper of the year and the pony Foxhunter final. And that’s in a year when three months of the season were decimated due to the pandemic.

Tabitha has long impressed with her ability, but she has roared on to the international stage in the past two seasons, and not just on ponies. Her first foray into children-on-horses yielded team bronze at the Europeans last summer, riding the 17.1hh Grennanstown Sarco Lux Hill (Bart) at only their third show together.

“It didn’t take me long to get used to his stride,” she says matter-of-factly. “I just go on the pony stride and minus two before the fence. That usually works.”

If this sounds innocently straightforward, it’s because – for her – it is. Tabitha was hunting without the lead-rein aged just four and enthralled by jumping by six, forcing Tanya to weigh up her daughter’s competitive options. Tabitha couldn’t wait until the minimum age of 12 to go affiliated eventing, and so she immediately veered on to the showjumping circuit with a pair of 128cms, Tinkerbell and Lollipop.

“I’ve been hooked on jumping since my Shetlands,” says Tabitha, introducing me to Squeak, an athletic-looking piebald standing all of 7.2hh. “Right from those days I wanted to jump. Squeak would bronc and try to buck me off, but I loved it.”

Tanya is quick to point out the “perfect storm” that has precipitated Tabitha’s rapid ascent of the past 18 months.

“She’s incredibly lucky,” says Tanya, who is from a non-horsey background. “Tabitha can only do what she does because we do what we do – and because Mark broke his ankle. If he hadn’t, his career would still come first. It’s about being in the right place at the right time – and wanting it. There’s a lot of luck, isn’t there?”

There’s also a lot of practice. Tanya is an adherent of the book Bounce: the Myth of Talent and the Power of Practice, Matthew Syed’s bestseller on how to be a champion.

“Tabitha is lucky in that she has so many ponies to ride, and so many hours’ training, riding and in the ring, so if it goes pear-shaped it’s not the end of the world,” Tanya adds.

Somehow, education fits in alongside. While parents the world over have been tearing out hair over home-schooling, lockdown threw up an unexpected benefit for a young international showjumper.

Tabitha’s school, Ratcliffe College, has always been accommodating with her competition schedule, but home-schooling has given her the flexibility to study and compete. This term, “school” is a room on the farm with a tutor between 9am and 2pm, after which she rides up to four horses.

“I never push her to ride more,” says Tanya. “She swims one night and has physio as well because so much sport is hard on your body. But she just loves competing – when she was little and I could see she was tired I’d stop her from competing in the last class, and she’d scream her head off!

“It might look like a professional career, and Tabitha loves to win, but these children know how to play,” Tanya adds. “They play and play and play. If they’re not on the horses, they’re play-jumping ‘Jolly Jumps’.”

I wonder how hard it is to have friends on the cut-throat circuit, and whether her success is a source of envy, but Tabitha laughs.

“I’m very competitive but once it’s over, it’s over,” she says. “We have some rivalries and when we are on the ponies we all want to win, but as soon as we’re off, we’re cheering each other on. I hate being mean or jealous. In the lorry home, I like making edits of my rounds, slow-mos and adding music, and I put the ‘fails’ in too.”

A girly demeanour

Tabitha hops aboard a seven-year-old 148cm mare, Lickaun Lady (Nancy), and puts the grey through her paces under her father’s guidance. Tabitha, still petite, has apparently shot up in lockdown, and her precise and composed style resembles a much older rider, yet she retains a girly demeanour in a sparkly helmet and pink T-shirt. Her long hair is plaited and neatly tucked into her hat, and she looks every inch the professional, her own confidence transferring to her slightly green mount.

Mark does most of Tabitha’s coaching, while Tanya is more involved in helping exercise and train the ponies – Tabitha can’t do a dozen herself. They tend to source the ponies young as “we prefer a blank canvas”. The common thread is that “they’re like little horses”.

“They all have plenty of blood, even the 12.2hhs,” Tanya explains. “They need that fitness to do so many qualifiers – the circuit is relentless.”

Tabitha’s extremely reluctant to admit which pony tops her string, though eventually admits that winning machine Playboy Van De Zoetewei (Bugsy) is the star 138cm.

“He’s sharp on the ground, you have to move slowly,” she says, gently stroking his stripy black and white forelock. “We bought him from the Netherlands when he was four after seeing a video, so he was a bit of a risk, but I think we got a good one. He’s speedy and will do whatever I want him to.”

Under duress, she suggests Atomic Du Bary, a new 148cm for this season, is the leader at that level, although Gangnam Style II must be pushing for favouritism after landing the 148cm grand prix showjumper of the year at Aintree. This pair form part of a quartet owned by Gordon and Su Hall, the late Hearts Destiny’s owners, who are “a huge support”, investing in Tabitha’s talent at this early stage. The giant Bart is another. A breathtaking clip of Tabitha taking a stride out at a gallop to win a children-on-horses grand prix at Lamprechtshausen shows how utterly undaunted she is by the jump up from 14.2hhs to 17hh-plus, but she admits the transfer to horses isn’t as easy as she’s made it look.

“I think I’ve worked Bart out now, but he can buck me off from a standstill,” she grins. “It just depends whether he’s happy or grumpy. And he does have a massive jump.”

Killer instinct

Tabitha takes me on a tour of the yard. Four of her top ponies – Atomic; Lickaun Lady, and her two 138cm champions Lisduff Royal (2020) and Playboy (2019) – are lined up in cross ties for the photoshoot, looking sweet as honey. It’s hard to imagine their killer instinct in the ring.

There are some 70-odd horses – liveries, clients and the Kyles’ own – at Queenholme. Tabitha singles out two 128cms, last year’s HOYS champion Corey’s Princess (Poppy) and her five-year-old son Special Offer (Daffy). Daffy, a blue roan piebald, arrived unexpectedly a few months after Poppy.

“We bought Poppy not knowing she was pregnant, and she got fatter and fatter,” laughs Tabitha. “I was still showjumping her two weeks before. Daffy’s pretty good, too.”

Back at the house, set just behind the main yard, Tabitha flops into a beanbag in her old “playroom”, which is festooned with medals, ribbons and photos of victorious ponies. Next door a windowsill the length of the room is jammed with Tabitha’s trophies – “I would like my own trophy room,” she muses.

There are all the outwards signs of a fully fledged champion, yet at the same time, so many reminders that Tabitha is barely a teenager. There’s a puzzle on the table, and a home-made nail bar set up in the hall, legacy of a “lockdown hobby – I do new nails for my mum every week”.

It’s a whole team effort, the making of a champion. From the grooms who get up at 4am to lunge Tabitha’s ponies before a show (she can’t warm up all of them single-handedly), to her parents ensuring she has a normal childhood while nurturing her talent and drive. As Tanya says: “Tabitha is unbelievably lucky but she loves to win. Hopefully she’ll stay this keen.”
