How safe are ‘safety stirrups’? Why work must start on a standard

There is real doubt about how safe “safety stirrups” are – but manufacturers have been urged to help work towards a safety standard.

British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) executive director Claire Williams gave an overview of the situation, at the BETA safety conference on 21 April.

“Please, whenever I say ‘safety stirrups’, think about inverted commas, because the one thing that’s come out of work we’ve most recently done is that there’s real doubt about how safe so-called safety stirrups are,” she said.

Ms Williams said BETA first looked into perception and use of safety stirrups in 2021, as there had been “huge growth in the use of safety to market products, but often no indication of whether the product reduced risk of accidents or injury, or whether there were any aspects whatsoever of safety around the product”.

“It’s a constant source of surprise, to people within the equestrian world and without, that so many products we use have no standards associated with them,” she said “I also find it slightly ironic that while we have standards for everything that goes on us, there’s virtually no safety standards for anything that goes on the horse.

“I thought we were nearing the start of the development of a European standard. I felt it was time, five years later, to check where we were at.”

The most recent study considered riders’ views of safety stirrups and the need for a standard, and compared them to the 2021 results.

She said BETA riders see safety stirrups as those that prevent a foot getting stuck in them, so the foot will be released “in all circumstances”, which is an issue.

Safety stirrups: absence of risk?

“To many riders, it’s a total absence of risk,” she said. “Use has escalated dramatically, covering occasional and constant use. So while adoption has increased, sadly confidence has not. They’re buying them despite having uncertainty, not because that uncertainty has been resolved.

“Riders are now calling into question the use of the word ‘safety’ in association with stirrups, and there is still confusion around what’s safe and which mechanism is best.”

Ms Williams said the survey found more demand for evidence and testing of safety stirrups, the use of which has almost doubled since 2021. Many riders expressed concern about failures of stirrups, or the use of the word “safety” for marketing rather than as a measure of performance.

“When we look at why riders aren’t using them, that tone is changing,” she said. “In 2021 they were uncertain about what was being offered. This year, we saw a real shift to riders questioning the claims of safety and the lack of evidence to justify that term.

“Now it’s more about risk resistance than price resistance; riders expressing concerns about false safety, inconsistent performance and mechanisms that might fail. We repeatedly saw a real gap in trust.

“There’s an issue of a credibility vacuum and riders making their own risk assessments because there’s no recognised standard. Brand claims are often conflicting and there are anecdotal failure stories, which tends to carry more weight than marketing.”

Attempts to establish a standard

Ms Williams said the range of products offered led to the attempts to create a safety standard, which “is going to be incredibly challenging”.

“Even among sceptics, the demand for a standard is strong,” she said. “We asked, ‘Would you be more likely to use a safety stirrup if there was a standard?’ And around 55% in 2021 said yes, this time it was 60%. So for better or for worse, there is real belief a standard will raise the bar in terms of safety.”

Ms Williams said minimum criteria for a safety standard would include reliability, independent testing and the fact the safety function should not alter the stirrup’s performance. She cited the recent case of Mark Smith, a 75-year-old rider whose unbranded stirrup broke while he was riding in a point-to-point, as reported by H&H.

“The fact a stirrup like this can be put on the market, and put riders at risk, it really does question whether we need a standard for all stirrups, never mind safety ones,” she said. “That’s what we’ve been working towards. It is a challenge.”

BETA asked manufacturers to come forward to contribute to a standard working group, four years ago, but only one came forward. The European technical committee responsible for standardising sports equipment agreed to set up a working group to start developing a standard but not enough of the countries nominated to take part put forward enough experts for it to go ahead, so the group no longer exists.

“We’re not giving up”

“We’re not going to give up as having a European standard is really important,” she said.

“I would like to, once again, extend an invitation to companies involved in the stirrup manufacturing world to come forward and start that work, to put together the key criteria that would need to go into, frankly, a stirrup standard with the element of safety included. We need to start work now. We can’t delay any longer, because it really is key for safety.”

Mark Smith, who fell when his plastic stirrup broke at the Old Berks Hunt meeting on 6 April, told H&H he wants such items banned unless manufacturers can prove they are safe, and thinks there should be a safety standard.

“The authorities make such a fuss about standards for hats or body protectors; I can’t believe there isn’t one for stirrups,” he said. “I can’t let this lie as if it happened to anyone else, I’d never forgive myself.”

‘You couldn’t make it up!’ 75-year-old rider denied charity win owing to broken stirrup raises serious safety concerns

A 75-year-old rider whose stirrup broke during a race at an Easter point-to-point said it was ironic that his first visit to an Injured Jockeys Fund centre was a result of his fundraising for the charity.

Mark Smith joked that “you couldn’t make it up” after his fall from Shot Tower (Bob) in the hunt race at the Old Berks Hunt meeting at Lockinge on Easter Monday (6 April). But he is concerned about the safety of his stirrups, which he bought two weeks before the race. One of them broke with four fences to go, as Mark and Bob came round the corner into the back straight.

“If you come off at a fence, it’s because you’ve come to it wrong or something and you’re prepared, but to hit the ground at 30mph going round the corner, it came out of the bloody blue,” he told H&H.

Mark and Bob had been leading the field, but Mark said his plan was to get a lead from one of the others for a couple of fences, and then pass them on the run-in.

“We came into the back straight – and then we didn’t,” he said. “I’d been unseated, is what the commentator said, but it wasn’t quite as simple as that.

“I suppose it’s far more dramatic if it’s one stirrup than both; you see riders sometimes kick both feet out as you’re better off with none than one. But at least at a fence you’re almost expecting something, not when you’re just coming round a corner.

“When you’ve been falling off horses for 70 years, instinctively you tend to do the right thing and once you feel you’re going, you don’t fight it. I daresay 40 years ago, my reactions might have been quicker but I might have tried to hang on round his neck, dropped off and he’d have gone over the top of me.”

Mark said he thought it must have been the leather that gave way, but then saw the stirrup had broken at the thinnest point, on the top. A picture of the other stirrup shows a crack in the same place.

“They’re brightly coloured, so they’re aimed at a child’s market – but they’re dangerous to children,” he said. “I want them off the market.”

The seller of the stirrups told H&H they are unbranded and were only for sale via his platform.

He added: “We were really shocked to see the stirrup had cracked.

“For Mark’s peace of mind, we won’t be selling that item any more until further testing has been done. We have also donated £500 to the charity Mark was racing for, plus gift aid – the amount Mark would have won if he won the race.

“We will ask that the manufacturer do more rigorous tests going forward when making products like this.”

Mark said the seller, as his only point of contact for the product, had done all he could. He would now like a blanket ban on this type of stirrup unless manufacturers can prove products are safe, as there is no safety standard to which stirrups must adhere – which he would like to see changed.

“I can’t let this lie as if it happened to anyone else, I’d never forgive myself,” he said.

Mark said the race, and the winter’s training beforehand, was worth it; it gave him something to aim for as well as raising an estimated total of over £5,000 for the IJF including donations at the meeting.

“It kept me out of mischief – and that old horse was magic,” he said. “Apparently when he stopped, he looked back and said ‘Oh s***, where’s the old man gone? He was there a minute ago’!”

“I’m a bit sore but I’ve ridden five this morning,” he added, the day after the race. “It’s ironic that the first time I’ve had to go to Oaksey House [to be checked over] was when I was fundraising for the IJF – you couldn’t make it up.

“They’d done a brilliant job of the ground [at Lockinge] – and I said that even before I hit it! – but the more I thought about it, I thought supposing I’d been a kid; there could have been a fatality.”

Mark’s fundraising page for the IJF is still open, and on Friday (10 April) Mark confirmed that he and Bob and going to try again, at the Wales Area Club point-to-point meeting, at Lower Machen, Newport on 19 April, as he said he would rather “finish on a satisfactory note”.

Asked if he was looking forward to it, he said: “Bob is! And in my experience, happy, confident horses make happy, confident riders.”

‘We understand this is controversial’: US equestrian federation bans certain safety stirrups to avoid injuries

US Equestrian (USEF) has announced a ban on certain styles of safety stirrups – a change the federation has described as “controversial”, but aimed at reducing “preventable” injuries.

The change is the result of a review of the USEF’s safety data, which noted incidents in which “riders were injured because their clothing or body got caught on a stirrup with an upward-pointing projection in the course of dismounting from their horse”.

The rule, which comes into force on 1 December, states: “No piece of equipment shall be attached to a saddle that has a rigid upward pointing projection, hook, or similar object capable of catching a rider’s clothing or person when dismounting, including stirrups”.

“We understand this change is controversial,” said USEF chief of sport David O’Connor.

“Although injuries from safety stirrups are statistically uncommon according to our data, they can be significant and are preventable with the selection of certain styles. We believe this change to the rule allows members to use a breakaway style stirrup if they prefer while reducing the risk of unintended harm.”

USEF has issued guidelines with images to help riders determine whether their stirrups comply. These show two examples of stirrups no longer allowed, open-side stirrups with elastic band – known as peacock stirrups – and those that are fully open on one side.

“Stirrups should be examined for compliance in their non-activated state (meaning any latch or releasing portion of the stirrup has not been triggered),” said a USEF spokesperson.

“In this state, the stirrup should either have closed branches (meaning there are no gaps in the outside frame of the stirrup). Or, if the branches are not closed and there is a gap in the outline of the stirrup, the gapping branch must sit inside the plane of the stirrup so there is no upward-facing, rigid projection.”

The spokesperson added that the federation is aware that tack and equipment are constantly evolving and new designs may come on to the market in the future.

“The illustrations shown in these guidelines are not intended to be a representation of all possible safety stirrup designs. A USEF task force will meet twice a year, in January and June, to review any new designs,” he said.

Manufacturers can submit products to USEF “for review to determine compliance” by completing a design review form.

‘It was a challenging 12 minutes’: rider jumps around Burghley cross-country with broken stirrup

Ireland’s Sam Watson and Ballyneety Rocketman have risen from 33rd after the dressage to 16th going into the final showjumping phase at the 2025 Defender Burghley Horse Trials. But his cross-country round wasn’t without incident.

Sam and the 11-year-old he co-owns alongside his wife, Hannah, picked up 23.2 time-faults around the Derek di Grazia-designed cross-country course, mostly due to the gelding becoming very keen after jumping the Irish Horse Board Cottesmore Leap at fence 11. But Sam also suffered a tack malfunction just one minute into the course, when the outside of his stirrup snapped.

“A lot of things were thrown at me, including my stirrup breaking one minute into the course at the Lion Bridge at fence four,” explained Sam. “I decided the leather was okay, but it meant my foot was slipping off the side of it.

“You have to give it to my horse though, he dug deep in that moment.”

Sam said that he had to think very quickly to analyse the situation and make a decision about what he was going to do.

“I had to think about how I was going to manage to jump round with the stirrup broken and then change my tactics a little bit. And then when he became keen I had to add in some little turns to regain rideability – it was a challenging 12 minutes.”

Speaking further about his broken stirrup on the Burghley Horse Trials cross-country course, Sam Watson explained: “There was nothing keeping my foot in, so I had to get a bit more balance in my toe and tried to take the weight onto my knee, but my horse wanted to jump the fences and I have to credit him for that.”

The best safety stirrups are designed to release your foot quickly and easily in the event of an accident. There are a variety of designs and release mechanisms available. The most common are shaped irons and breakaway stirrups with mechanical or flexible arms.

Shaped irons – stirrups with a distinctive bend have been designed to help prevent the foot from becoming caught in the event of a fall. If you aren’t keen on the full breakaway effect, this style of stirrup can offer some reassurance and is usually much cheaper than the breakaway style.

What are peacock stirrups?

Peacock stirrups are an open-sided safety stirrup closed by an elastic band attachment. The band is suspended between two hooks with a leather tab at the bottom. In the event of a fall, the band is designed to release, which prevents the rider’s foot from becoming wedged in the iron.

Peacock stirrups have been a popular choice for equestrians for decades. They have a traditional look compared to more modern styles of safety stirrups and are a cost-effective option. They are a style often favoured by younger riders and have been a staple for Pony Club children.

In recent times, there have been concerns regarding the upward-pointing hooks that hold the band in place. It has been reported that the hooks can rip clothing and even skin, which leads to a risk of groin injuries when dismounting. One American lawyer and former showjumper, Armand Leone, has gone as far as to suggest banning the peacock stirrup in the US.

One thing to be aware of with peacock stirrups is wear and tear on the elastic band. You can buy inexpensive replacements as and when you need them.

Are magnetic stirrups safe?

Magnetic stirrups are a relatively modern addition to the world of equestrian equipment, designed to enhance stability and security while riding. They feature a magnet in the footbed that helps keep the rider’s boot in place, which can improve balance and control, particularly in disciplines like dressage or show jumping. Importantly, the magnet is not the primary safety mechanism. Most magnetic stirrups also incorporate a traditional safety release system, such as a side-opening arm, to ensure the rider’s foot can disengage in the event of a fall.

While magnetic stirrups can provide added confidence and functionality, there are factors to consider before using them. The strength of the magnetic connection varies between models and may not suit every rider’s preference. Compatibility with specific riding boots is another consideration, as the magnets are designed to work with particular soles. Regular maintenance is also necessary to prevent dirt or debris from affecting the magnetic connection.

Do safety stirrups work?

Safety stirrups are designed to reduce the risk of injury by allowing a rider’s foot to release during a fall, minimizing the chance of being dragged. Using mechanisms like flexible arms, side-opening designs, or magnetic connections, they respond to uneven pressure or twisting forces to release the foot effectively. While no stirrup can eliminate all risks, safety stirrups are particularly effective for disciplines like eventing or showjumping and are a popular choice for riders of all levels.

Their effectiveness depends on the quality of the design, proper fit, and regular maintenance. 11 tips to make riding without stirrups easier

It’s November, which means riders around the country are ditching their stirrups in an attempt to improve their seat and general riding skills in what has been coined #NoStirrupsNovember. While riding frequently without stirrups for short periods can help improve your balance, feel and position, it is not recommended that you spend long periods without stirrups as this can result in sore muscles for you – and your horse.

So if you fancy joining the #NoStirrupsNovember movement without doing yourself or your horse a mischief, here are our top tips for making riding without stirrups a little bit easier for both of you…

1. Stretch first

“One of the best exercises to do before you ride without stirrups is to lie on your back with your right leg bent up. Take the sole of your right foot on the floor close to your bottom and place your left ankle across your right thigh. Then repeat on the other side,” says coach Emma Fisher. “This exercise helps to open out your hip, groin and lower back.”

2. Warm up and assess your horse

Give yourself and your horse time to warm up with stirrups first. Then assess whether you horse feels like they will be able to cope with you riding without stirrups that day. If they are feeling a little fresh, or if they are weak or tight in their back, taking your stirrups away isn’t going to help either of you. Instead, you could start by adding in just a few strides of sitting trot at a time, before going back into rising trot. As soon as you feel your horse tighten or hollow their back, go rising, ride forward and ask them to lift their back. By building up gradually, and monitoring your horse’s reactions, over time you will both be physically ready to ride without stirrups for short periods. Remember to frequently check your horse’s back for any signs of discomfort along the way.

3. Have the right equipment

Cross the stirrups over in front of your saddle so they are not in your way and use a neckstrap or breastplate for extra stability.

“If you are going to ride without stirrups it’s important to have a neckstrap so you have something to put your finger through if you lose your balance or your horse spooks,” says international event rider Ibby Macpherson.

4. Ride in a safe environment

Choose carefully where and when you do your riding without stirrups. An arena is a good option if you have one, or if there are certain routes at hacking where you horse tends to be more relaxed, you could try there.

“Be sensible. Don’t ride without stirrups when out on the road or in the middle of a field in the pouring rain on a horse who has just come back from a holiday,” continues Ibby.

5. Canter may be easier than trot

If you are able to ride a good walk to canter transition, you may find that’s easier than spending a lot of time in trot.

“Canter is often easier than trot so start with that, get the feel for it and relax before changing to trot. It’s important not to go against the movement but to go with it,” says Emma.

6. Look ahead

“Look straight ahead and focus on certain points in the arena – don’t look down as your position will change. If you look ahead with your body tall and heels softly flexed, you will find the whole experience of riding with no stirrups easier,” advises international showjumper Yazmin Pinchen.

7. Concentrate on your breathing

“By thinking about your breathing, it stops your upper body getting rigid in anticipation and helps you to relax,” says Emma.

8. Keep your shoulders back

“Keep your upper body tall and really use your core muscles to help find balance and comfort. It’s not an easy exercise if you are not used to it so using your legs and core is really important,” adds Yazmin.

9. Soft hands

“Stay soft in the hand and don’t rely on them for balance, use your legs and engage your tummy instead,” says Yazmin. If you are feeling unbalanced then slip a finger into the neck strap or under the front of the saddle.

10. Don’t grip with your legs

“The more you tense, the harder riding without stirrups is so try to relax, sit deeper and move with the horse rather than against him,” adds Emma. “Try not to grip with your legs. Keep your knees and thighs relaxed, wrap your legs around your horse and ensure your toes are pointing forward,” says Ibby. “Engage your core and don’t brace against the movement, allow your body to go with it.”

11. Have someone on the ground

“Not only is having someone on the ground important from a safety perspective but it’s also useful to have someone watching you, reminding you of the basics like looking ahead, while letting you know if your position changes when you don’t have stirrups,” concludes Ibby.

Call for safety stirrups ban after child suffers ‘horrific’ injuries

Elastic-sided safety stirrups can cause horrific genital injuries to children and should be banned.

This is the opinion of an American physician, lawyer and former international showjumper, who knows a child who was badly injured, and who told H&H he has heard of other similar incidents.

Armand Leone wants US Equestrian (USEF) to ban the stirrups, which are also popular in the UK for children, which feature a hook to which an elastic loop is attached. The idea is that the elastic will detach if the rider has a fall, to prevent a foot becoming stuck.

But Mr Leone said there is a greater risk to safety when the child is dismounting.

“In 2014, a child dismounted at a horse show, and the hook ripped through his breeches and degloved his penis,” he said. “He was 11 or 12.

“I started looking into it and it appears there’s an average of about one incident every six months.”

Mr Leone said the young rider he referred to had to have skin grafts. He recovered but Mr Leone said it could have been worse. He has also been contacted about young female riders whose genitals have been ripped by the hooks.

“Most of the time they just catch clothes or a belt but injuries happen, and there’s no reason for it,” he said. “There’s a hook sticking straight up; put it somewhere else or get rid of it. Even though it’s not sharp, it’s sharp enough, and if you’re coming down off the horse; it was horrific when it happened.”

Mr Leone added: “These stirrups are ubiquitous; there’s no one manufacturer but they could say that type of stirrup is not allowed.”

A spokesman for USEF told H&H: “We have not received direct outreach from Armand Leone regarding the peacock safety stirrup safety concerns or a rule change proposal.

“We have also not received any reports of accidents involving peacock safety stirrups. We will reach out to him directly and request he provide a report and any evidence of the peacock safety concerns to the USEF human and equine safety and welfare committee and encourage him to submit a rule change proposal.

“Safety and welfare of our human and horse athletes is our priority, and we take this issue and all safety concerns very seriously.”

What are the benefits of technical stirrups?

While stirrups are versatile and can be used across the disciplines, certain designs are tailored specifically for dressage and flatwork. Investing in quality training stirrups designed to promote proper positioning can enhance your feel, coordination, and technique.

Given the distinct leg positions and physical demands of dressage, selecting the right stirrup design is important for optimal performance and comfort. Having the best stirrups for dressage should not only improves leg position but also helps alleviate discomfort – and they might have a joint or inclined design to help with this.

However, these features are not essential and some of it will come down to personal preference. Instead, look for a stirrup made from high-quality materials with a wide footbed that provides support and prevents your foot from slipping.

British Dressage (BD) allow any colour of stirrup, but not stirrups that are attached by mechanical or magnetic means, or by velcro straps to the girth – unless special dispensation has been sought. If you are looking for a pair of the best technical stirrups then you have probably already heard of the French company Flex-on. The Flex-on Green Composite stirrups (GC2) are the best-seller of the Flex-on range, and I was looking forward to finding out why.

Having previously spent most of my life riding in traditional bent leg iron stirrups, the GC2 stirrups certainly look very different to what I was used to – and I was quite amazed by how many features could be personalised.

First and foremost, the stirrups promote comfort, and Flex-on states the GC2s help to “provide stability to the leg and enable perfect positioning”, thanks to an offset stirrup leather slot which the company claims “encourages optimum leg position”. The stirrups are shock absorbing, and weigh 800g for the pair.

The stirrups are hot-forged and treated to prevent oxidation, and increase strength and longevity. They are also covered with environmentally-sourced polyamide material.

Personalisation

There’s definitely an element of fun about personalising your kit – and the Flex-on GC2 stirrups not only allow you to choose technical features, but also colours.

You can choose between a standard or ultra-grip tread, and whether your footbed angle is inclined or flat. You then can choose the colour of your iron, tread, shock absorbers, and magnet colours. You can go all out bright and blingy, or more traditional, and the Flex-on website allows you to choose and view your designed stirrups before committing.

I opted for the ultra-grip tread and inclined footbed, with showjumping in mind. When they arrived they were beautifully presented in their box, and there was definitely a bit more excitement opening something you’ve “designed”.

I tried the stirrups on the flat, showjumping and hacking. One thing I noticed was the stirrups felt quite light compared to what I am used to, and on the flat I’m not sure they were quite as supporting as the Sprenger Bow Balance stirrups (that I’ve also tested) – which also encourage a better leg position and balance.

However, the inclined footbed definitely helps your heel naturally stay down, and when jumping and hacking, I felt very secure in my leg. I definitely noticed the shock absorbance of these stirrups when jumping – it’s really a step up compared to basic traditional irons and as someone that can suffer with some aches and pains, I think this will be really beneficial.

The ultra-grip footbed does what is says on the tin, and even when the footbed got sand and grit on it from a few days’ use, it was still super-grippy. I would just urge a little bit of caution when doing up your stirrup leathers as I noticed they can catch on the spiky footbed grips if you’re a little too hasty!

Verdict

H&H Approved – I really like the Flex-on GC2 stirrups for hacking and jumping, where I want that bit more security in my leg and the shock-absorbing performance. For flatwork I found them a little bit light for my liking, but I am happy to switch stirrups depending on what I am doing, as I would with any other equipment. Being able to choose your tread and incline is a massive bonus – and the vast amount of colours definitely adds the fun factor. As well as treating yourself, they would also make a lovely gift. Technical stirrups do come with a substantial price tag, and the GC2s are £185.95 (at the time of testing), but I think this is fair, especially given the customisable options.

When a product claims to “encourage perfect leg position and balance” it definitely gets my attention. Having ridden in the more traditional bent leg stirrup irons for years, I was very interested to try something that offer more, and the Bow Balance stirrups by Sprenger do just that.

The stirrups feature the Sprenger four-link system technology; and have a safety standard 1,600kg breaking strength. The “bow” aims to reduce the risk of the foot becoming trapped and offers enhanced security, by being able to pivot in four directions simultaneously. The stirrups are also shock-absorbing and claim to be “gentle on ligaments and joints”.

What struck me first is the Bow Balance stirrups’ unique style, with the “bow” shape – and then the rubber in the lower half of the stirrups, and I think they look smart enough for competitions – or everyday riding.

When I first put my feet in the stirrups I definitely felt instantly supported by the extra wide footbed. I was concerned the flexibility of the stirrups might offer almost too much mobility, having been so used to traditional stirrups, but I really liked the feeling they gave me when I was riding. I put them through their paces riding in the arena, field, and out hacking, and in all scenarios they felt very comfortable.

I struggle with some stiffness through my right hip which I’m working on with the help of a physio, and I definitely felt the Bow Balance stirrups helped me secure my right lower leg a bit better. I tend to ride quite short, but I found myself feeling comfortable enough to drop my stirrup leathers down a hole, which was a real positive – and I’m sure my flatwork coach will be happier for this too!

My main discipline is showjumping, and while I definitely like knowing the safety they offer with the 1,600kg breaking strength and the bow reducing the risk of the foot becoming trapped, I do find the stirrups ever so slightly clunkier and heavier than the ones I’m used to – but with that said, I think over time I wouldn’t notice.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* – The Sprenger Bow Balance stirrups have won me over, and I would recommend them to others. I think it’s a bold claim that a stirrup can help with leg position, and the cynic in me wondered if they were having a placebo effect, but I definitely have a more secure lower leg when using them and I am interested to see how they feel in a few months down the line. They are quite pricey compared to traditional stirrups (RRP £195) but they sit comfortably in this price bracket alongside other brands of the best technical stirrups.

Calls for safety stirrups to be made compulsory in eventing

The FEI is considering whether to make safety stirrups compulsory for eventing – as the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) confirmed it is “working towards” a safety standard.

The discussion arose during the FEI eventing risk management forum in Jardy last month.

Five-time Olympian William Fox-Pitt said he feels “very strongly that safety stirrups in our sport are a no-brainer”.

“I would not let anyone go without a stirrup that either has a curvy edge, where the foot comes away quickly, or one with a deformable side,” he said.

He added that there are many varieties and “some maybe aren’t good enough”, so as a sport, eventing has to find ones that fit the bill.

“There are incidents where I’ve been dragged, Harry [Meade] has been dragged. In those incidents, how lucky are we to even be alive?

“We do everything with hats, body protectors, frangible fences – surely stirrups, if we can do something, should become part of that.”

Olympic and world medallist Clayton Fredericks agreed.

“I think we should insist that each rider is coming with a safety stirrup of some sort anyway,” he said.

“I realise we want to have high standards of that, but the reality is some form of safety stirrup is better than none and being dragged. So I think it’s a no-brainer. We should make it compulsory.”

FEI risk management steering group chairman Geoff Sinclair told the forum that not having a safety standard makes it difficult to require riders to use safety stirrups, but asked those present to consider whether they should make them “highly recommended”.

Badminton and Olympic gold medal-winner Jane Holderness-Roddam said: “As a child, we always had safety stirrups and I’m horrified to think that nowadays, it’s not compulsory in all equestrian sports, really.

“There are an awful lot of stirrups out there and some I’ve seen just snap that are supposed to be safety stirrups. There definitely needs to be a standard, I think, and BETA would I’m sure be very happy to help to do that.”

BETA chief executive Claire Williams told H&H that the association is working towards setting a standard for safety stirrups.

“The first thing we need to do is to reach a consensus statement on what exactly a safety stirrup is,” she said. “We cannot write a safety standard until that is decided.”

She explained that there are many different variations in how safety functions work on stirrups. This makes it a different challenge to writing a standard for more uniform products, such as a hat or body protector, but work is under way.

Most saddles are sold without stirrups or stirrup leathers, so finding the best stirrup leathers will help you make the most of your saddle. We’ve rounded up a few things worth considering when choosing a new pair of leathers and have selected a few of the best stirrup leathers worth taking a closer look at.

Stirrup leathers can be divided into three categories – traditional leathers, nylon-core with a leather covering or synthetic.

Traditional leathers tend to last well and maintain a smart appearance, plus it’s also quite an easy job to add holes with a leather hole punch if you need to. The only real drawback is that they can stretch and become uneven.
Leathers with a webbed nylon core were developed to combat this issue, but you can’t add holes in the same way. The core has very little stretch and is covered with a thin layer of leather – depending on the type of leather used here, it may not be as durable as a heavier stirrup leather.
Synthetic stirrup leathers are used with synthetic saddles and are easy to clean and maintain.

There are also a few different designs available in addition to the traditional, basic straps. Single-layer designs, which are adjusted lower down and often with a T bar rather than a buckle, reduce bulk under the leg and avoid pinching. Wider designs offer greater stability, making them ideal for jumping.

Ideally you want your stirrup leathers to match your saddle – this is simple if it’s black, but if it’s brown you might need to shop around for the right shade. Some brands also offer leathers with coloured highlights or stitching if you’re looking for something a bit more personal.

Stirrup leathers come in a range of lengths to accommodate different leg lengths and positions in different disciplines. They also come in a variety of widths – 1in is the most common, but you will also find some styles in ¾ or ⁷⁄₈in. The gaps between holes can also vary – usually 1in or ½in – smaller gaps allow for a more precise choice in length. Numbered holes will make adjusting your stirrups easier both in and out of the saddle.

What size stirrup leathers do I need?

The average stirrup leather length for an adult is 54in. Taller riders and dressage riders are likely to require longer, while shorter riders and those who jump may need shorter.

For an estimate, measure the length of your arm from your armpit to the tips of your fingers for general riding and jumping, or your inside leg to the ankle for dressage. Double this measurement and add around 3in for general riding and about 6in for dressage – this is a rough guide for traditional leathers (it won’t work for single-layer leathers) and doesn’t take into account your horse’s build, but it’s a good place to start.

Top rider jumps clear round three-star cross-country after stirrup snaps in two – ‘It‘s bloody hard work!’

Irish Olympic eventer Aoife Clark managed to jump clear round an international cross-country track – although her stirrup had snapped in two early on course.

Oxfordshire-based Aoife was riding seven-year-old gelding Fetiche Des Rouge, known at home as “Radish”, in the Millstreet CCI3*-S in Ireland on 25 August, when she “felt something go” at fence five, the first water combination.

“I jumped in and I thought maybe I’d just lost my stirrup. I jumped the fence out and went to try and recover it, and no joy,” she told H&H.

“I wasn’t entirely sure what was going on so I jumped the next fence, but then I realised pretty quickly after that it had snapped in half and there was nothing to put my foot on. I thought ‘I’ve come all this way and I’m not pulling up’.

“The next fence was the Irish bank and there was a skinny triple brush three strides after. That was the only time I thought I’d best do the alternative route because when he jumped off the bank I was balancing on my right leg and I thought it’s not very fair on a green seven-year-old to try to aim at a triple brush when I’m balancing on one side. Other than that he was super and popped round.”

Aoife, who said the stirrups were a “bit older”, completed the course clear – but picked up some time faults to finish the competition 38th.

“Annoyingly, I was fifth going into the cross-country but I had to go a bit steadier after that. He’s a young horse and jumped double clear at his first CCI3* so I was really happy with him. I’m sure there were parts of it he must have thought ‘What the hell is she doing?’,” said Aoife.

“I’ve no idea how Toddy went round Badminton with one stirrup [in 1995], because it’s bloody hard work! It was quite funny because I hadn’t realised people had noticed I was missing a stirrup, I was just focusing on getting round and not making a mess of it. By the time I got the last water I had people cheering me on to get home which was really nice, so it was a bit of a laugh by the end of it. New stirrups needed now!”

Who needs stirrups anyway? Jockey defies broken ‘iron’ five fences from home to win

Jockey John Dawson defied a broken stirrup to score a four-timer and take the Yorkshire area men’s championship title in a remarkable display of horsemanship at the Haydon point-to-point at Hexham on Saturday (14 May).

John was riding the Cherry Coward-trained grey El Tornado in the 2m4f maiden, for owners Cassy and Daniel Bell, and Kimberley Mawdesley and Alex Mawdesley, when the plastic “iron” cracked with a circuit to go.

“It broke before five out and it was a bit of a decision of whether to carry on or not,” said John. “I thought it was now or never for the horse in that race. It was the perfect race for him and everything was going smoothly to that point. I jumped two with one stirrup and then I got to three out and I kicked the other out as I decided I was probably better off having none than one.

“He hasn’t been the most fluent of jumpers, if I’d had to pick one on the day for that not to happen on, it would have been him. But he was good and got me home safe!”

Jacqueline Coward, watching, couldn’t work out what had happened: “I was thinking ‘what is John doing? Maybe the horse is hanging or jumping funny?’”

He crossed the line and explained what had happened.

“John is such a horseman,” Jacqueline added.

His win was followed up with two more for the Cowards, taking the restricted with the perhaps aptly named Ridelonglivelong and the maiden conditions on Red Opium.

“The two maiden winners were knocking on the door. They have been running well, so it was about time they won,” said Jacqueline.

“Ridelonglivelong won the weekend before at Charm Park, so he doubled up,” said Jacqueline. “He is a bit of a strange horse, we call him Weird Ian at home. But he was fantastic and was really professional. He has lots of ability, he just likes to see everything – if he has seen something once, he gets it.”

She added that he has come on “a hell of a lot” in a week.

“He does like fast ground, that makes a huge difference. Long-term family friend Chris Richardson owns part of him and I was so pleased for him,” she said. “He is a joint-master of our local hunt and a gentleman who puts so much into the sport.”

The homebred Red Opium, owned by breeder Susan Mason, completed the Coward hat-trick.

“She’s had three seconds and was really knocking on the door. She’s the daughter of Poppy Day, who won the Grimthorpe Gold Cup with my cousin Joanna Mason,” said Jacqueline.

Black Op, a Grade One winner over hurdles in his career under Rules, took John’s tally to four with a 25-length win in the men’s open for owner Charles Clark and trainer Emma Clark.

“Black Op was the steering job of the lot winning the open. It was nice to get a good confidence-boosting run into him, after coming from under Rules,” said John.

First impressions

My groom, Sian, was very excited that these arrived, so I was keen to try them out. They have a great grip on the tread and look smart.

Overview of performance

They’ve been used regularly for 9 months and haven’t worn at all. The safety mechanism is very safe – one side is rubberised and your foot can ping out. They key to reattach the mechanism is easy to use – you just need to remember to have it with you. However, you could carry on riding without a problem if you forgot the key as the rubber doesn‘t disappear.

The angle of the footplate encourages your heel down and helps educate it to stay. They’re suited to jumping and have good shock absorption. Because they hang at an offset angle, they’re easy to find it you lose them. The treads can be unscrewed so you could probably replace them, although I don’t know why you’d need to..

Sam’s likes and dislikes

They’ve not marked any of my boots and the tread hasn’t worn at all. They were also really light. We loved them!

Verdict

First impressions

I have a really, really old pair of Sprengers that I still use, so I was keen to see if these were as good. They don’t have a side release like many of the others I tested, but I loved the shape and design.

Overview of performance

I love these stirrups and I found them to be really shock absorbing. I regularly use these with my main horse as I find for me they do everything right. I would be more than happy to ride in these every single day. They’ve lasted really well and the tread doesn’t seem to have altered at all. Although it does look like the tread can be replaced if needs be.

I love everything about these stirrups. However, when I started comparing them all by weight I hadn’t realised these were so heavy, so I did have to deduct a few points for that.

As soon as I got on, my heels were much lower without even thinking about it.

I really liked these stirrups – they’re well suited to jumping and I felt very springy. They helped get my heels down and I was surprised at how far they went down without me even thinking about it! The grip on treads was really good. The outside smart-release arm is ‘pingable’ but quite rigid at the same time.

I liked the simple design, although found this particular colour a little bright for me. They were, however, really lightweight, which was great.

I thought these stirrups looked rather stylish. I also really liked them in black because it meant I could use them for everything.

Overview of performance

These stirrups have a really simple release mechanism and you don’t need tools to restore it, which is handy. The tread is amazing and didn’t mark my boots at all, even though the grip feels prominent to touch. You can also change the treads if you need to. They’ve worn really well and show no signs of scratching. I liked the angle as it makes the stirrups easier to regain if you lose them. Overall they’re nice stirrups and are useful is you don’t want your heels to be forced down because they’re flat.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

These stirrups were really comfortable and they don’t force your heels down, which in some situations is what you want. They were the most expensive pair I tested, but they were lovely and did a great job.

First impressions

My first thought was “wow”. I thought they were a beautiful and elegant design and they came in lovely packagaing. I was intrigued to find out how they worked and how strong the magnets were. ow does it work? How strong are the magnets? I found getting the insoles in to be a bit tight, so I would consider ordering a smaller size in the future..

Overview of performance

These stirrups were so interesting to test and I enjoyed riding in them. The magnets worked really well and were more powerful than I expected. They really keep your foot in place and if you lift your foot the stirrup comes too. They are, however, perfectly safe and would definitely detach easily if you fell off. I can see where Ophena are going with this and I’m sure it will help some riders with their position and foot placement but, personally, I like to be able to rebalance myself. I think they help you stabilise your foot to allow your hinges to work, but I wouldn’t say they enhance the comfort and support for your joints. They were also quite heavy.

They look gorgeous and the packaging was lovely. They’re so nice that I put them back in the box each time I use them, which is a faff and I’d say they were high maintenance to look after, but it shows how lovely they are. They’re not legal for BD or BE as they’re magnetic, but they are permitted by BS.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

Overall, I enjoyed riding in these stirrups but they weren’t ideal for me on an everyday basis. If you’ve got the spare cash I would say they’re a good tool to help with your training. They are really easy to attach to your stirrup leathers as you don’t need to completely remove the leather from the saddle to do so.

First impressions

These were the most basic in appearance of all the stirrups that I tested. I really liked the colour because they look smart and go well with everything.

Overview of performance

I used these stirrups really regularly over a number of months and was really happy with them. They’re nice, simple stirrups – they don’t need to be all singing and dancing because they definitely do the job. The treads are well made and hard-wearing. You might need to change them eventually, but I didn’t notice any wear in the time that I used them. They had a slight flex – not as much as others I tested, but I didn’t expect that for the price.

Manufacturer Freejump has apologised after a leading showjumper’s stirrup snapped and caused him to fall during a five-star show.

Sweden’s Henrik Von Eckermann was competing Mary Lou 194 in the CSI5* Grand Prix Hermès in Paris on 19 March when the accident happened.

As the combination landed over an oxer on the 1.60m course, Henrick’s right Soft’Up Pro stirrup gave way.

Despite his best efforts to stay in the saddle, the unbalancing jolt of the break unseated him.

A Freejump spokesman said the company would like to say “how sorry they are” to Henrik, but is pleased to see both horse and rider were uninjured.

“It is not the first broken stirrup, but it is obviously the first that has received so much media coverage,” the spokesman told H&H.

“In collaboration with Henrik — who is deeply convinced of the benefits of Freejump stirrups but of course worried about the causes of breakage — we were able to examine the stirrups and understand the situation.”

The company found the material gave way following the fatiguing of a “micro-crack” at the breakage site.

The production serial number of this set of stirrups dates back to 2012 — the first series of the Soft’Up Pro.

The spokesman added that the bending or “breathing” of the stirrups, which the riders feel at each stride and which is the main advantage of the Freejump stirrups, is mechanically “extremely demanding”.

“Dimensioned for an unlimited lifetime in normal operation, our stirrups can be weakened by a violent shock or a particularly intensive use,” he said.

“Henrik was riding up to 10 horses a day at Ludger Beerbaum’s, besides riding in grands prix every weekend.

“Henrik is tall and rides short on his stirrups, which accentuates even more the pressure.

“Nowadays, our single-branch stirrups, which are bringing their share of technical evolutions, need to be monitored and replaced as part of an intensive use.”

The company’s stirrups are “million times” tested on a specific machine and Freejump works “continuously” to improve them.

“The steel wires are 25% more resistant than those of the first series involved in the fall of Henrik, which were themselves twice more resistant than the first generation of Soft’Up stirrups,” the spokesman said.

He added the company is there to help assess the possible risks if riders have any concerns.

Henrik and Mary Lou 194 have now put the incident behind them and are looking ahead to the Longines FEI World Cup final in Omah this week.

“It was disappointing, but sadly these accidents happen, things break,” Henrik told H&H. “If it is not the stirrup, it is a rein or a bit and so on.

“Yann from Freejump has been at my yard to check the stirrup that I used, and it was from year 2012.

“The amount of impact the stirrups get at this level of usage means we need to change them — the new model is made stronger and safer, but still we need to change them from time to time.

“I have used Freejump for years, I feel comfortable with them and I will keep using them.”

Sam Griffiths’ stirrup taken off sale while Amerigo investigates Burghley break

Manufacturer Amerigo has said it is taking the breaking of Sam Griffith’s stirrup at Burghley “extremely seriously”.

The company has confirmed that the incident is a one-off and it is suspending all sales of this stirrup until the reason for the break has been found.

Sam, who was lying in eighth place after the dressage with Happy Times, was galloping between fence three and four on the cross-country when his left stirrup iron broke.

The bolts holding the tread of his stirrup iron in place sheared off, leaving it dangling from the leather with nowhere for him to put his foot.

“Safety is paramount to us at Amerigo and so we are taking the matter extremely seriously and are investigating the possible causes of the break as thoroughly and as speedily as we are able to do so,” said Lisa Menet of Amerigo.

“We have sold this stirrup type for more than three years and it has been used in all levels of the sport, across all disciplines, without any incident.

“Until the causes of the break have been established, we will suspend all sales of this stirrup.

“The stirrups are manufactured for us by a company in Italy, who will be working with us very closely on this.”

Despite the break, Sam continued on course and incurred no jumping penalties, but pulled up after the Cottesmore Leap complex (fences 12 and 13) as the flapping stirrup was beginning to unsettle his horse.

Our reviewer found that the style of these stirrups may not be to everyone's taste, they were technically brilliant

The Aphrodite Tech Stirrup is a lightweight stirrup of aluminium construction. It has been produced entirely in Italy and has been designed to have a greater concentration of its weight in the foot bed to allow for greater stability.

The design of the stirrup eliminates the usual rubber insert to provide grip and instead maintains the aluminium design throughout with a number of sharp peaks on the foot bed to provide grip/traction.

On initial inspection we thought the foot bed was incredibly sharp and while it has not detrimentally affected riding in any way, we have resorted to wrapping the stirrups when run up and stored overnight as it has proven very easy to accidentally scratch the leather of either the saddle or stirrup leathers. While this is a little bit of a hassle, the design has proven to be very effective while riding. It allows very easy adjustment of your foot to find an optimum position on the stirrup.

The stirrup itself looks and feels like a quality product, well made and substantial in design, but may not be everyone’s cup of tea as they do look a little different to the norm, with squarer edges to the arch and a matte silver appearance. However, they have also apparently been treated to preserve their aesthetic quality and at present they show very little sign of wear and tear.

The very top of the arch is designed with a slight cut away on each side to encourage the stirrup to hang on a slight angle on the leather to aid the position for the rider and this does seem to work well.

Verdict

These stirrups allow very easy adjustment of your foot to find an optimum position

Equipe asymmetric stirrups promise a secure jumping position

The Equipe Asymmetric Stirrups are designed for showjumping and cross-country, and have been designed to place the rider’s leg in a secure, correct position.

They enable the rider to keep their lower leg close to the horse’s side with the weight in the heel so they are in constant contact with the horse’s side.

The stirrup is offset with a 30° angle at the head of the iron, creating an asymmetric effect.

It stops riders gripping with their knees and stops the stirrup leathers twisting which happens when a rider places weight on their knees rather than in the heel — to achieve the perfect lower leg position for jumping.

Made from a tough poly carbon synthetic mould, Equipe Asymmetric Stirrups are very light and come with interchangeable treads — one is traditional rubber and the second is a stainless steel tread with raised super grip surface.

Q: There seems to have been a lot of evolution in stirrup design lately but I recently spotted some that seem to have a right-angled shape, rather like safety stirrups.

Can you tell me how they work and where I can get a pair?

The stirrups you mention are the Evo 80°— recently introduced by Italian manufacturer Royal Rider, which specialises in the injection of moulded products into the medical, electronic, automotive and sporting industries.

The stirrup bar is angled at 80° to ensure the leather hangs straight and offers better foot stability and lower leg position. They are said to be lightweight, strong and shock absorbing, made from tough DuPont Techno polymer.

They are designed separately as a left and a right stirrup, with the outer edge manufactured specifically to offer an “easy out” design. The stirrups also feature cheese grater-style treads and a wide foot bed for optimum balance.

Who uses them?

Eventer Clayton Fredericks has been impressed with the Evo 80° stirrups since he started riding in them recently.

“They offer very good grip, position the feet correctly and the wide surface area helps encourage a steady balance,” he said. “They are a vital piece of kit for jumping.”

Fellow eventer Georgie Davies has also started using the stirrups.

H&H Asks: Freejump X’up stirrups

COMMONLY used in the United States and on the Continent, the Freejump X’up stirrup is supposedly one of safest types of stirrups around. But who uses them, and how do they stay attached to the rider’s feet?

Who uses them?

SHOW jumper Tim Gredley, who spent some time in America, saw them used over there and was given a pair to try. Tim rode in several Nations Cup competitions using them last year, and competed at last week’s Hickstead riding in the X’up system.

Numerous top European riders also use them, including Ludger Beerbaum and Marco Kutscher.

How do they work?

BY combining the stirrups with a special pair of boots, in a manner similar to the designs of ski or bicycle pedal bindings.

The stirrups have an “automatic release” binding, which fastens to a bronze plate on the soles of the boots. This prevents the rider from losing their stirrup, but will release instantly in the event of a fall.

Riders can either buy the specially made es’one shoes and chaps from Freejump, or have an existing pair of boots modified, providing they can be resoled.

What is Tim’s verdict?

“I really like them because they make you feel a lot safer in the saddle, and can help you maintain your balance,” says Tim.

“In the Nations Cup at Aachen last year, I had a big crash on the first day and the stirrups released very quickly. But they won’t fall off unless you do.”

Are they difficult to use?

NOT according to Tim. “Once you get the hang of them, they’re easy.”

Where do you get them?

THE X’up stirrups cost around £182 a pair, the es’one shoes £110, and the mini-chaps £96 (all excluding delivery).

H&H Asks: Stirrup Control System 3

SHOW jumper, Pippa Allen, 12, won the HOYS 138cm championship. She wears the Stirrup Control System 3 (SCS3) from Mountain Horse — comprising boots, quick-release stirrups and stirrup treads designed to help keep the rider’s feet more stable and secure.

How does it work?

THE SCS3 system features slanted grooves in the sole of each boot, which slot into corresponding grooves on the stirrup tread. The angle of the grooves stops the boot sliding forwards through the stirrup, but allows the rider to pull their foot back easily. There are four grooves in each sole, allowing the rider to place their foot further forward or back to suit.

The SCS3 Quick Release stirrup iron adds to the safety factor. A rubber tube forms part of the outer section of the stirrup and this opens in the event of an accident.

Who uses them?

JUNIOR show jumper Pippa Allen competes in the SCS3 system.

Her father, Peter, says: “I’ve got two young daughters competing — Millie is only eight — and safety is a major factor. We tried various safety stirrups, but we’ve found the Mountain Horse ones work best. The entire side comes away if the rider falls, stopping them from getting their foot stuck in the stirrup.”

Peter favours these stirrups over other very lightweight models.

“They’re heavier, so they hang in place and this makes it easier to retrieve them if Pippa loses a stirrup,” he explains.

“As for the treads, they’re great for keeping the rider’s feet stable and in the right position.”

Do I have to buy the whole system?

NO — each individual part can be bought and used on its own. Using either the boots or the stirrup treads on their own will give the rider more grip.

There are short and long versions of the SCS3 boots — the High Caliber is a rear-zip long boot and is suitable for competition wear, while the Windsor and Stirling are different styles of jodhpur boots that can be combined with matching gaiters.

Italian bootmaker Fabbri also sells a model of its competition riding boots with the SCS3 sole.

How do I get them?

THE stirrups with SCS3 treads cost around £59.50, the treads on their own cost £9.99 per pair. The jodhpur boots cost around £97.50, while the High Caliber boots cost £189.95 (ladies’) and £197.50 (men’s).

Q: I recently saw an Italian show jumper competing in some unusual-looking coloured stirrups. How do they work and are they available to buy in this country?

What are they?

THESE coloured stirrups come from Italian manufacturers Equipe and have just been launched in the UK. The bright colours are attracting a lot of attention, but there is much more to these hi-tech pieces of kit.

They are made from strong, lightweight aluminium and are available in a jumping or dressage style — and each pair comprises a left and right stirrup with a slight tilt where the leathers fit to help keep the lower leg in the correct position.

The stirrup’s tread is wider than normal and is said to offer a better weight-bearing surface and give extra stability to the rider’s leg. The in-built grip adds sticking power, while the holes are designed to help balance the stirrup and keep them lightweight.

Who uses these stirrups?

ITALIAN show jumpers Vincenzo Chimirri and Alessia Marioni have both been adding a flash of colour with their Equipe coloured stirrups.

“I like them because they have a wider base where your foot rests for security, are less bulky and more lightweight than traditional stirrups,” said Alessia Marioni.

“They help me maintain a good leg position when jumping.”

Armand Leone wants US Equestrian (USEF) to ban the stirrups, which are also popular in the UK for children, which feature a hook to which an elastic loop is attached. The idea is that the elastic will detach if the rider has a fall, to prevent a foot becoming stuck.

But Mr Leone said there is a greater risk to safety when the child is dismounting.

“In 2014, a child dismounted at a horse show, and the hook ripped through his breeches and degloved his penis,” he said. “He was 11 or 12.

“I started looking into it and it appears there’s an average of about one incident every six months.”

Mr Leone said the young rider he referred to had to have skin grafts. He recovered but Mr Leone said it could have been worse. He has also been contacted about young female riders whose genitals have been ripped by the hooks.

Mr Leone added: “These stirrups are ubiquitous; there’s no one manufacturer but they could say that type of stirrup is not allowed.”

A spokesman for USEF told H&H: “We have not received direct outreach from Armand Leone regarding the peacock safety stirrup safety concerns or a rule change proposal.

“Safety and welfare of our human and horse athletes is our priority, and we take this issue and all safety concerns very seriously.”
