Which are the most interesting hunting biographies? Frank Houghton Brown gallops through a selection of great sporting books...

Biographies of various sporting personalities seem to be at the front of every bookstand, but in many ways the lives of famous huntsmen or hunting folk are even more interesting. There are a host of wonderful biographies that cover all types of hunting people, and in most cases their lives have been fascinating. It is from these that we have selected what could be the best hunting biographies.

Some huge characters from the 19th century lived lives that one can only dream of and spent their vast fortunes on their personal enjoyment of the chase. Henry Chaplin, the “Squire of Blankney” is one such individual. His biography, Henry Chaplin: A Memoir, covers his long mastership of his own hounds, his success with Hermit in the 1867 Derby and the sadness and scandal when his engagement to Lady Florence Paget was abruptly severed as she was about to buy her wedding outfit and eloped with the Marquess of Hastings.

A similar book is The Meynell of the West, the story of James Farquharson and his mammoth 52-year mastership of his own hounds, who hunted the whole of Dorset entirely at his own expense from 1806.

That great American master of the Cattistock, Henry Higginson, was the author of Squire Farquharson’s biography and his own autobiography is a fascinating read. With a forward from his great friend Ikey Bell, Try Back refers not only to his English mastership in the 1930s, but also to a 20-year spell hunting hounds in America.

Beagling is well represented among the best biographies, none better than Her Master’s Voice, the amazing story of Betty McKeever and her Blean Beagles which she hunted in Kent for the best part of a century.

However, if you want a really different sort of experience, then the life of Flight Lieutenant HC Pyper fits the bill in his 1937 book Hounds First. He was a truly well-travelled man and used every opportunity he could to sample the sport on offer wherever he found himself. From time spent as a jackeroo in Australia prior to World War I, to hunting with the Royal Exodus hounds in Iraq, Pyper hunted hare, fox, otter and jackal at every chance he could grab. He hunted beagles in the UK, notably the RAF Uxbridge, which later morphed in to the Old Berkeley Beagles.

Ernest Bawden was perhaps the most celebrated huntsman of staghounds, and his story is brilliantly told in the book Staghunter. His time with the Devon and Somerset Staghounds straddled World War I, and the stories of fieldcraft and hunting are second to none. However, equally as interesting is his time in Africa during the Boer War, when he used his immense hunting skills to kill an enemy sniper.

Bawden’s story is superb, but that of his harbourer Fred Goss in Memories of a Stag Harbourer is perhaps even more extraordinary. His job was to find what he describes as “a warrantable stag” and to locate its position ready for the meet. His vast wealth of knowledge of both the deer and their terrain is immense, and with his own words you get a sense of his love for his quarry and for Exmoor itself.

Professional huntsmen have regularly consigned their lives to print, with the lives of famous Quorn huntsman Tom Firr and Pytchley huntsman Stanley Barker being two of the best. Huntsmen of a Golden Age tells of the life of the Goodalls; the 20-stone Stephen Goodall, who hunted the Pytchley and the Quorn, and Will Goodall, grandson of Stephen who became huntsman of the Belvoir at the tender age of 24 in 1842.

The lives of different Fell huntsmen are immortalised in print, none better than that of Joe Bowman, huntsman of the Ullswater for more than 41 seasons from 1879. Life in the Fells was a distinct world of its own, and each individual valley another world again. Bowman gives an insight into the tight-knit communities and the important part that hunting played within them.

Thirty Years a Hunt Servant by Jack Molyneux is a classic, written in 1935. The name Molyneux is associated with a famous family of huntsmen and Jack was brought up in kennels, initially when his father was first whipper-in to the Garth hounds. Jack leads the reader through his life and it soon becomes clear just how totally immersed in hunting life his family had become. Rejected by the army as a result of hunting accidents, Jack’s career unfolds from whipper-in to huntsman in an array of very different hunt countries – a fascinating insight.

George Race hunted his own hounds, the Biggleswade Harriers, who mainly hunted the hare. In his 1911 biography, Seventy Years a Master, there are some nerve-racking accounts of amazing hunts. One particularly memorable run was in 1847 when he hunted a white fallow buck from Southill Park near Biggleswade for 17 miles without a check across a punishing line of country. The stag swam the lake at Wrest Park to Hockliffe, but broke bay before they could catch him. Race was furious that the noble beast was then taken by what he describes as “a bunch of navvies”, presented to Queen Victoria and released in Windsor Great Park.

The legendary American master of foxhounds Ben Hardaway published his autobiography, Never Outfoxed, in 1997. An extrovert and fanatical hunting man, Ben describes his childhood addiction to the chase and his journey in building his famous pack, the Midland Foxhounds in Georgia, USA. Ben certainly had an interesting and varied life which was lived to the full.

There is a plethora of choice available to the hunting enthusiast, but my favourite is Martin Letts’ succinct Memories of my Life at the College Valley. Every one of his stories is not only interesting in its own right, but shows how quickly things changed in the Cheviot countryside in the second half of the 20th century. The only downside is that he must have become bored while writing it, because it whets the appetite but is sadly only too brief.

H&H 13 August 2020

You may also be interested in…

Discovers some of the most exotic hunt clubs across the globe with Horse & Hound

From a Japanese draghunt to a chasing jackal in Palestine, Will Cursham discovers some of the most extraordinary packs of

At home with hounds: We go behind the scenes at two hunt kennels *H&H Plus*

What really goes on in hunt kennels?
The Ward Union will be hunting this season, but within the law — that’s the message from Ireland’s only stag hunt, which was effectively banned by the Irish government in June (news, 8 July).

The Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2010 was passed in the Dáil (the lower house of the Irish parliament) on 29 June, by the narrow margin of 75 votes to 72.

It makes stag hunting with hounds illegal, but the Ward Union (pictured) thinks it has found ways around the regulations.

Hunt spokesman Ronan Griffin said: “We are testing methods that are within the law to find a style of hunting that suits us. We shall be ready by our opening meet on 29 October.”

The Act makes it illegal to hunt deer with two or more dogs on horseback, but not on foot.

The Ward Union, based in Dunshaughlin, West Meath, owns a herd of up to 140 deer.

Until the end of last season they acted as a “carted” stag hunt. A live adult stag was taken to the meet and pursued until caught, unhurt, and released.

They had to be licensed each season by the government. But environment secretary John Gormley, of the Green Party, was keen to see an end to the practice.

A spokesman for the Irish government said they thought the Ward Union would be drag hunting in the coming season, with a deer released to create a trail and recaptured before the hounds were released. But the Ward Union did not confirm this.

James Phelan of the Hunting Association of Ireland said they were in talks with the hunt and hope to find a way that will allow them to continue to meet.

This article was first published in Horse & Hound (21 October ’10)

Stay in touch with all the news in the run-up to and throughout the major shows and events during 2026 and beyond with a Horse & Hound subscription. Subscribe today for all you need to know ahead of these major events, plus online reports on the action as it happens from our expert team of reporters and in-depth analysis in our special commemorative magazines. It is such a shame for the Wards and a terrible blow for Irish hunting.”

Despite hopes that Fianna Fáil TDs would defy their party to vote against the controversial Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2010, only one party member — Tipperary’s Mattie McGrath — voted against the bill.

He has since been expelled from the parliamentary party.

The Irish environment minister, John Gormley of the Green Party, made a last minute amendment to the bill, to preclude deer stalking from the legislation.

The Dáil will vote on a second bill which will affect hunts next week — the legislation to ban puppy farming.

Mr Phelan said the Dog Breeding Bill will mean all hunts having to microchip their hounds and give local authorities the right to spot-check kennels.

“There will be no standardisation so it could be very easy for a council with an anti-hunting agenda to make draconian requests of a hunt in a bid to put them out of business,” he said.

“But I think the anger surrounding last night’s vote may spur TDs on to vote against it.”

See H&H edition 8 July for more on this story

Stay in touch with all the news in the run-up to and throughout the major shows and events during 2026 and beyond with a Horse & Hound subscription. Subscribe today for all you need to know ahead of these major events, plus online reports on the action as it happens from our expert team of reporters and in-depth analysis in our special commemorative magazines.
The Irish hunting community is being urged to “sharpen up” to ensure a blanket ban on hunting isn’t introduced.

The coalition government of the Green Party and Fianna Fail has vowed to ban stag hunting in Ireland as soon as possible. The Hunting Association of Ireland (HAI) and Irish Masters of Foxhounds Association (IMFHA) have announced that fox hunting will follow if hunt supporters don’t take a more proactive stance.

On 9 October, the government voted on its programme for government — or mission statement for the coming years — and this included a ban on stag hunting.

Fox hunting and coursing were not mentioned, but the Green Party’s manifesto states it would like to see a ban on both sports.

James Phelan of the IMFHA said: “We need to be more politically active so we don’t make the mistakes which allowed hunting to be banned in England and Wales.

“Nowhere else on the planet will you find the Tipperary double drains, the Blazers’ stonewalls, the single banks of Waterford and the knife-edge banks of Wexford, combined with the Irish-bred horses and communities involved.

“The combination of all three is what makes Irish hunting so famous. Rural Ireland is standing up in their thousands to defend these traditions.”

The Ward Union is Ireland’s only carted stag hunt and, under the terms of the programme for government, would cease to exist.

Ward Union hunt secretary Ronan Griffiths told H&H: “The decision to ban stag hunting has come as a real surprise. Evironment Minister John Gormley installed monitors to report on the condition of our deer and what happens when we hunt. Vets also examine the deer in the park and after hunting.

“Their view was that, with tweaks, we can exist in a modern era. Gormley is going against that.”

He said the hunt would fight the ban through the courts.

Lyall Plant, chief executive of Countryside Alliance Ireland, said: “The banning of the Ward Union is just the start. We are campaigning throughout Ireland with the HAI and IMFHA.

“We have contacted all the hunts, telling them to lobby their TDs [teachtaí dála, member of the Irish parliament] and councillors, and have had a positive reception, but unity is vital among all the country sports. We have got to get together and fight.”

In 2006, Irish jockeys vowed to strike if a hunting ban was suggested in Ireland (news, 27 April 2006).

Read this news story in full in Horse & Hound (29 October, ’09)

Stay in touch with all the news in the run-up to and throughout the major shows and events during 2026 and beyond with a Horse & Hound subscription. Subscribe today for all you need to know ahead of these major events, plus online reports on the action as it happens from our expert team of reporters and in-depth analysis in our special commemorative magazines.
Ireland’s hunting community is celebrating an unexpected victory today after The Dublin High Court granted an interlocutory injunction in favour of the Ward Union Hunt against the licence Environment Minister John Gormley issued to the hunt.

The injunction effectively suspends the current licence, issued on 19 December, which is the subject of a judicial review before the same court.

Chairman of the Hunting Association of Ireland Gavin Duffy said: “The Ward Union could go out hunting this afternoon. It is an unexpected victory for us as we had thought we would have to wait to get the terms of last year’s licence reinstated.

“This allows the Ward Union to hunt for the last three weeks of the season.”

The Ward Union hunts a “carted stag”, meaning they release and recapture unharmed deer bred in captivity by themselves in the course of the day’s hunting.

License for this activity has to be agreed by the environment minister but the licence issued to the Ward Union in December limited them laying a trail with a stag and capturing the stag before the hounds are released.

Hunt members said this was an impossible constraint upon them.

Speaking after today’s High Court decison Ward Union Chairman Oliver Russell said: “We now await the direction of the court, but in granting the injunction the current licence is suspended so we now understand we operate under the previous licence which grants us permission to hunt deer in the traditional manner.

“We are losing a minimum of €4,000 per week because of this unworkable license and remember we need funds to maintain our conservation programme of Irish Red Deer.

“We all welcome the suspension of that unworkable licence today during the review.”

Ireland’s Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr John Gormley, has issued the Ward Union Hunt with a restricted licence to hunt under the Wildlife Act, 1976.

The hunt will not be allowed to chase a stag with hounds under the terms of the licence, which is subject to 28 conditions.

The Minister said: “The licence with the conditions I have granted to the Ward Union Hunt will allow for the hunting of stags in a manner which will provide for the protection of the stag and the general public. In effect it permits the Ward Union to release a deer to lay a scent trail along the course of the hunt, but I am insisting that the deer must be recaptured before the hounds are released and the full hunt gets underway.

“I believe that the conditions attached to the licence address my concerns from a wider public policy perspective about the public safety issues surrounding the hunting of a large animal by a large group on horseback and a pack of hounds through an increasingly urbanised countryside.”

But the Countryside Alliance say today’s judgement at Taunton Crown Court allows hunts to keep hunting.

The case centred around the exemption, under the Hunting Act, of flushing a wild mammal using two dogs. It was a private prosecution, brought by the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS), using video evidence filmed in Somerset in February 2006.

But Countryside Alliance head Simon Hart said the judgement finally gives hunts a clear idea of what is “exempt hunting” following months of confusion.

“We remain convinced that Richard Down and Adrian Pillivant believed what they were doing on that day in February 2006 was legal hunting,” he said. “It cannot be reasonable to have expected these men to have interpreted a law, which even its supporters describe as ambiguous, in exactly the same way as a High Court Judge.

“But we also asked that the judge gave a framework for future exempt hunting and he did. The court has confirmed that, with adaptation, the Quantock Staghounds, and others who use this exemption, can continue to hunt.”

For full details of the judgement, reaction and analysis of the exemptions, read next week’s edition of Horse & Hound.
