End of the road for popular grassroots event

Next month will mark the end of the road for a popular grassroots event.

After 10 years of running British Eventing’s (BE) Stafford Horse Trials fixtures, organiser Amy Dixon is stepping down from the role following July’s event due to health reasons.

Amy ran the first event at Park Farm in April 2005 when she was eight-months pregnant with her first child, Leah.

Since it began, the event has grown hugely and now welcomes around 800 combinations at each of its two events a year.

Amy told H&H the thing she is going to miss most is the “family” of volunteers.

“They are incredible in their skill set and what they bring to the event,” she said.

“We have a great time.”

It was after a run of being balloted from events when she was competing that Amy had the idea of setting up her own event.

The late Colin Furness, who was BE regional director at the time, said to her that they needed more events and if she didn’t like being balloted that she should run one.

They looked at two venues and decided Park Farm in Weston Road, Stafford.

“He has literally put everything into it,” said Amy of the land owner Richard Williams.

She added she is “so glad” to have put effort into grassroots eventing and spoke highly of the role 80cm events have in introducing people to the sport.

Amy, who also works in property, said she “absolutely cannot wait” to spend more time with her two daughters Leah and Poppy.

She added her girls are upset at the loss of the events and wanted her to give up “every other bit of work” apart from this.

The pair both help their mum with the running of the competitions, Leah by pole picking and Poppy by selling “horse pick ‘n’ mix”, such as chopped carrots to competitors.

Amy said she is going to keep them both involved in eventing and there are a number of nearby competitions they plan to volunteer at.

Equipment from Stafford Horse Trials, including cross-country fences, will now be sold via tender.

“The best thing that can come out of this now is other events can benefit from buying second-hand equipment,” said Amy.

New saddle-marking scheme for Staffordshire

A new saddle-marking scheme has been set up in Staffordshire, with tack stamped with a unique reference number.

Watling Street Neighbourhood Policing Unit has launched the Secure Saddles marking scheme through Horsewatch.

A reflective cantle plate is fixed to the back of all saddle, clearing identifying it as being security marked, and a reference number is stamped elsewhere on the leather.

Staffordshire Police then keeps owner’s details on a database.

Pc Kate Hardt said: “This new method of security marking does not rely on the old method of post coding tack which can cause difficulties when tracing the owners of stolen property.

“The fluorescent cantle plate is easily seen in the dark and simply and easily identifies the owner.”

Staffordshire horse owners warned after second break in

Police in Staffordshire are further warning horse owners in the area to be vigilant after nearly £8,000 worth of equipment was stolen last week.

Last Wednesday H&H reported that £1,600 worth of equipment was stolen, including clippers, feed supplements and equine painkillers, from a property in Shareshill on Monday 27 July.

And overnight on Tuesday 28 July and Wednesday 29 July a further £6,000 worth of tack and equipment was stolen, this time from a property in Wheaton Aston.

Nine sets of Zilco and Walsh American trotting harnesses, an Equissage horse roller, three saddles and three hunter bridles were taken.

Officers believe the thefts might be linked.

South Yorkshire and South Staffordshire hit by tack thieves

Police across Yorkshire are investigating a spate of tack thefts, with Western, Spanish and polo saddles among the goods taken.

Overnight 14-15 July 10 saddles and numerous other items of tack were stolen in Moss, Doncaster.

Among the haul were three Western saddles and bridles, an Anky Salinero dressage saddle and bridle and four polo saddle sets.

On the same night in Branton, Doncaster, highly unusual Spanish tack was stolen, including two Fhoenix saddles and a pierced leather Zaldi bridle.

Joanne Kennedy at South Yorkshire Police told H&H that a number of the thefts had been of tack left in stables, secured only with a padlock.

“Padlocks are no deterrent. The thieves just use bolt croppers,” she said. She suggested that yards concerned about safety should contact their local crime prevention officer who can advise on improving security.

“But the most important thing you can do is postcode all your tack and equipment. We have had cases where tack and rugs that had the owner’s postcode written on them were left behind by thieves,” she said.

And nearly £2000 of horse equipment was stolen in South Staffordshire earlier this week.

Thieves broke into a container in Orchard Lane, Shareshill on Monday, 27 July.

Four bridles, a pair of Wolsey clippers, fiver sets of clipper blades, a chainsaw, generator as well as feed supplements and equine pain killers were taken, worth over £1,600.

Postcoding tack can be done simply with white paint or a marker pen, or by leather stamping.

Rider paralysed after fall at Staffordshire County Show

Show rider Caroline Wareing has been paralysed after an accident at the Staffordshire County Show last week.

Mrs Wareing was riding her own four-year-old Whalton Pearly Queen in the Hack Championship on Thursday (28 May) when the mare was spooked, slipped and fell on Mrs Wareing.

Mrs Wareing was airlifted to University Hospital of North Staffordshire, where surgeons operated on her back for several hours the following day.

Her mother, Jan Gregson, told H&H: “Caroline has severed spinal cord and won’t walk again. It’s a tragedy.”

Mrs Wareing, who turned 32 in hospital on Sunday (31 May), has two young children under five.

“She’s very positive in her own mind,” said Mrs Gregson. “She’s taken the view that she’s still alive and she’ll still be able to cuddle her children.

“Caroline is adamant it was a freak accident and it was not the horse’s fault, she’s the sweetest mare.”

Mrs Gregson said her daughter is likely to stay in the University Hospital for several weeks before being moved to a hospital nearer home to undergo rehabilitation for six to nine months.

H&H showing correspondent Chris James, who was at the show, said: “The horse just seemed to upend. It was a freak accident.”

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called to County Showground shortly after 10am. On arrival crews found a woman who had been injured after falling from her horse.

“She was treated at the scene for back injuries and immobilised before being airlifted to hospital for further assessment and treatment.”

Two arrested after vicious horse attack

Police have arrested two 18-year-old men following a vicious attack on a horse which led to her being put down.

Maggie, a piebald mare, was found lying in her field at Essington Hall Farm in Staffordshire at 8am on 14 April with four separate injuries inflicted with what police believe to have been a “sharp bladed instrument”.

The 19-year-old cob suffered a severed tendon, a five-inch wound to her neck, a superficial cut to her near shoulder and a broken leg.

Vet Stephen Woodcock, who was called to the scene, told H&H the injuries were “horrible, to say the very least”.

He added that it was impossible to say whether the broken leg was caused maliciously or whether Maggie inflicted the injury upon herself in her efforts to get away.

Both Mr Woodcock and police officers, who were called to the scene by a friend of Maggie’s owner, searched the field and found nothing that could have caused the injuries.

Mr Woodcock, from EC Straiton & Partners in Penkridge, Staffordshire, told H&H: “In 23 years I haven’t seen anything like it — there is little or no chance that a horse could do these injuries to itself.”

Vet Stephen Woodcock put Maggie down after a consultation with the horse’s owner, Davina Bowyer, who had owned the mare since she was 18 months old.

The attack took place in a field at the farm on Bognop Road on the outskirts of Essington, which contained several other horses, although Maggie, who was kept in a fenced off section was the only horse injured.

PC Darren Munnerley from Staffordshire Police said: “This is an act of mindless barbaric cruelty. In 17 years as a police officer I have never dealt with an incident of this severity against an animal.”

The pair, from Wednesfield near Wolverhampton, has been released on bail. Police said they were still looking for at least two other suspects.
