NAF Off Deet Power Performance fly spray

I tested the NAF Off Deet Power Performance fly spray for a one month period, from the end of August until the end of September on a Welsh cob mare in Cumbria.

At the time, her mainstay of exercise was hacking. The UK had been treated to an Indian summer, so even during September pesky flies and insects were still present throughout the day, so a decent fly stray was still an essential part of my grooming kit. I also needed a product that could be applied to her coat while she was out at grass, as while she usually wore a fly rug while she was grazing, I needed something which would go someway in protecting her legs, belly and face area which wasn’t covered by the mesh rug. Alongside this, I wanted a product that I could throw into the lorry ahead of a competition.

Manufacturers NAF claim that NAF Off Deet Power Performance fly spray offers “all day protection against flies and insect menace” which sounded like the perfect product for me as I needed a solution that would protect in many situations.

The main ingredient marketed is DEET (19%). DEET is an extensively researched active ingredient that is used in many fly sprays for horses, however horse owners should be cautious not to choose anything which has a super-high DEET content before doing a patch test. 19% is a safe level of DEET content and I knew that my horse did not have any allergies to the ingredient as I have previously used sprays containing DEET.

The product comes in three sizes, with three different price points; 750ml for £19.99, 2.5L for £38.99 and 5L for £73.50. I was provided with a 750ml bottle for testing. The bottle was also suitable to be recycled, which was hugely positive.

The bottle was very easy to hold and it was extremely user friendly, being both easy to hold and spray, but also being durable and robust, ideal for busy, working yards where a bottle could easily be knocked over. It would survive being thrown into the lorry without worry that it would leak or spill.

The bottle was also ideal for refilling, with a handy screw cap and a large bottle meaning funnelling new solution into the bottle would be easy. Therefore, it would make sense to try the 750ml bottle initially, before purchasing extra liquid if needed. After a one month period, I still had half the bottle left, meaning the NAF Off Deet Power Performance fly spray provided good value for money.

Out hacking, this spray was effective for a couple of hours while out and about on the roads. The flies stayed away for the majority of the ride and my horse was comfortable while hacking out when we moved onto a bridlepath.

The smell of DEET was prominent. My mare, who is sensitive to scents, wasn’t overly keen on it when it was being sprayed onto her, so I opted to use a sponge to apply the liquid to her neck and face area.

The only issue I would have with this fly spray is that it wasn’t as conditioning on the coat as some of the best fly sprays that I’ve tested, which is something I do like in a spray, especially if used everyday. I wonder if this fly spray could dry the coat out and make it tacky, however this is just personal preference as I show my horses so coat health and condition is priority for me.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* – A good all-round fly spray that is effective in many situations, from protecting from pests out hacking, to using just before a competition on a summer day, to applying on exposed areas prior to turnout.

Reolink Duo 2 Outdoor Security Camera

More than ever people are looking for ways to keep their property secure, and a high-quality security camera is often top of the list. Reolink is a brand known for its security products and this summer launched its latest product in its Duo series, the Duo 2, costing £159.99.

The 4K 8 megapixel dual-lens camera – which comes with a two-year warranty – is available in two connection options; hardwired using Power over Ethernet (also known as PoE) or WiFi. For this review I have tested the PoE, which is suitable for home set-ups where cabling is already in place. Owing to my property’s rural location, PoE provides me with a stronger connection than WiFi – but this will vary from property to property based on your WiFi coverage, and should be taken into consideration before buying.

The PoE system offers a simple “plug and play” set up, but you require a PoE-compatible network switch, which you’ll need to buy separately. The camera came with screws that can be fitted to a variety of materials including wood or concrete, using a power drill or screwdriver. As my property already has PoE cabling in place, I would say setting up the camera was a smooth process and the camera is activated via the Reolink app by scanning the QR code. However, some yards and individuals might find the WiFi option more appealing, and easier to set-up, owing to it being wireless.

I previously tested the Reolink Go PT Plus outdoor camera – which was super for watching over my field and stables – and I had high expectations for the Duo 2, which I would describe as an overall yard security camera. I fitted this to a wall overlooking my entrance gate and parking area, and thanks to its 180° panoramic view, I can see any vehicle or person entering my premises – as well as anyone making their way towards my horses’ field.

Similar to the Go PT Plus, the Duo 2 has lots of features; its dual lens provides a wide viewing angle that captures a big area seamlessly, it offers live viewing and easy playback, has motion detectors that pick up vehicles, people or animals, a built-in microphone and speaker, time lapse feature, and spotlights. The smart camera offers the ability to have continuous recording, motion-triggered recording or scheduled recording – for example, if you only wanted to record during the night or when a vehicle was detected. Recordings can be stored on a server or on an SD memory card; a 64GB card will support around 16 hours of recording, while a 256GB card will support up to 64 hours, based on the camera’s default bitrate setting (note: the WiFi version offers more hours of recording on the same size memory cards, compared to the PoE).

Another helpful feature is the alert settings which allow you to receive push notifications to your mobile when motion is detected. As I keep my horses at home, having a camera and the ability to set alerts provides that extra peace of mind – as well as quality video evidence in a worse case scenario should I ever be a victim of crime. Another bonus is the camera can also connect to Google Assistant so for those with a Google Nest Hub at home for example, you can ask Google to show you your camera view, which is a nice added touch.

Verdict

H&H Approved – A security camera is a much-needed addition to any home or yard and I feel the Duo 2 really offers everything you could ask for. The picture quality is second-to-none and I like that everything can be controlled via an app on your mobile phone, making it very user-friendly. The Duo 2 does not currently come in a 4G version (like the Go PT Plus) and so WiFi or PoE cabling is essential for installation – however the original Duo camera (which offers 150° view compared to the new Duo 2’s 180°) does come in 4G. Overall I would describe the Duo 2 as a high quality product in the Reolink range, with a reasonable price tag.

Who tested this camera?

I used the Super Plus Fly Repellent from Barrier during July and August on my yard in Cumbria. Handily, we were hit with some intensely warm weather so I was able to give it a really rigorous test. Horseflies and midges were the most common insect, but I also needed the spray to protect from other flying insects which come out when hacking in more vegetated areas.

The manufacturers give the repellent a top billing, claiming it is the “number one selling product of its kind.”

The description also claims: “to deter all those nasty flying insects, and most importantly, where Super Plus has been sprayed, it protects against and calms the effects of midge bites. It is designed to keep the largest of flying insects at bay, including midge, bots, horseflies and most importantly calms and soothes the effects of midge bites.”

What I was intrigued about most was the claim that this particular spray was also suitable for horses with sensitive skin; my pony, Yogi, can sometimes come in from the field with the odd scratch or scrape, so something which can be sprayed on without having to worry about it irritating bare skin was ideal.

The ingredients that compliment sensitive skin and condition the coat include avocado oil, vitamins A, D and E.

In addition, the product soothes the skin, so the horses don’t have an urge to rub if bitten by pests.

The smell of this spray did pack a punch — while I did not dislike the smell, it was powerful and I did get the impression from the outset that it would deter insects.

I tested the 500ml spray bottle, which is priced at £14.16 for 500ml at the time of testing. Handily, you can purchase a 1l refill bottle, too.

When used on a hack, the spray was effective, though when we returned on particularly warm days, some smaller flies had gathered around the horses’ heads. However, when used prior to schooling, there were no flies at all.

This fly spray did condition the coat a lot more than other fly sprays I’ve tested. While some repellents can be effective, they can dry the coat out and make it tacky on the touch. I would suggest this spray as ideal for using when going out and about to competitions, as it boosted shine on the hair and conditioned the coat, all while repelling flies.

This spray was ideal for Yogi who needed something a little more sensitive. He is also not overly bothered by flies, so when insects would gather around him towards the end of the hack he was not impacted.

I agreed with the claim that this product prevents rubbing to some degree. When used a couple of times a day, it seemed to prevent Yogi from itching himself in the stable, which he can do when he is un-rugged and the weather is particularly hot.

The bottle wasn’t as robust as other brands, and the sprayer didn’t provide a super-fine spray, so you had to apply quite a lot to cover the coat. Nonetheless, the bottle lasted a month or so, so it provides decent value for money.

Verdict

An effective repellent that does two jobs in one, not only keeping the majority of insects at bay but simultaneously keeping the skin and coat healthy and conditioned.

Leovet Power Phaser Fly Spray

The Leovet Power Phaser fly spray has definitely garnered a positive reputation within the equestrian community for being one of the most effective fly sprays on the market, so I was looking forward to putting it to the test during the height of the summer. I was able to give this spray a full, rigorous test as we were treated to very hot weather during July and August in Cumbria, and consequently there were many flies and flying insects in the air, especially while out hacking on the roads. A quality fly spray is an essential part of my kit during this time; as well as being effective, I need something that’s not going to cost the earth as I’m likely to need lots of reapplications when my horses get sweaty in the field, when being worked and when being shown in an open field during competition season.

Leovet claims that Power Phaser gives “seven hours of protection, even if your horse sweats” and that it “works against horseflies, ticks and all biting and non-biting flies.”

The cost of a 550ml bottle was £18.29, which is at the higher end of the market, but it did last a long time and you didn’t need loads for it to have a lasting effect. I would predict that these bottles would each last around one month so you would probably need to purchase three/four during summer time, which is pretty cost effective.

The bottle was substantial, durable and held nicely in the hand, and the sprayer was very effective, coating the horse with an even spray of liquid. The liquid was fine enough to spray onto the forelock/ear area, too, though I put some on my hand and applied to the face area so I didn’t get the product in the horse’s eyes.

The smell of the spray was very strong and notable. I didn’t mind the smell — to me it just smelled like it was working, though some people might find it a bit intense. I will add that the horses did not seem to mind the smell of the spray and they didn’t bat an eyelid when it was applied to their coats.

In terms of effectiveness, the Leovet Power Phaser Fly Spray was probably one of the best I’ve used. It was really reliable, both when out hacking on a warm evening, or when schooling on a cooler morning. Due to the weather, the horses would start sweating within 10 minutes of tacking up but the spray did the job and prevented flies and insects from gathering.

I cannot comment on if the spray lasts up to seven hours, as I applied more, albeit sparingly, if I was turning out or riding later than the initial application, as the spray did come off the coat a little when the horses sweated a lot.

Verdict

H&H Approved – One of the most effective fly sprays on the market which lives up to its good reputation. Ideal for the hotter summer weather when flies are at their worst.

Absorbine UltraShield Insecticide H&H Approved

The Absorbine Black UltraShield Fly Repellent is described as a “tried and trusted formula which protects the horse’s environment from irritating and biting insects”. This was certainly true when I put it to the test over a three month period during spring/summer in Cumbria. We used the spray in wooden stables and on a range of native ponies while out hacking and when they were turned out in the field in fly rugs.

Editor’s note: this product has been approved for use on animals in the USA, but not in the UK where it is only approved for premise use around horses. Anyone choosing to use the spray in a manner that is not in line with the guidance on the bottle’s label, does so at their own risk.

The Absorbine Black UltraShield Fly Repellent contains the insecticide Permethrin and and the natural pesticide Pyrethrin, which both provide a “knock-down” and a long lasting protective “shield” from bugs and insects.

While in the UK it is marketed for use on equestrian premises, such as stables, barns and dogs’ living quarters, it is licensed for use on horses in the US and there were some reviews that said they had found it effective while out hacking, suggesting it was a versatile product that would do multiple jobs. The reviews are excellent, so I was looking forward to putting it to the test.

A spray specifically for premises is not something I’ve ever thought to use before but it makes sense; when the weather gets particularly hot, flies and wasps can gather in and around the stables and on the yard near the horses, irritating them while they are inside resting or being groomed. There is a long list of pests that this spray deters, and it definitely did go a long way in keeping flying insects, mainly pesky horse flies, at bay.

The 946ml bottle looked extremely robust; and after use on the yard I can confidently say that it is durable and will stand the test of time without leaks or spillages. The bottle was also dropped a couple of times and it did not break.

There was plenty of spray and the bottle lasted just under three months, so even though the price of £29.33 was more expensive than other brands, the product lasted a long time and offered good value for money.

I also used this spray on hacks, after completing a patch test on the horses, and it worked extremely well in deterring pests such as horses flies throughout the rides, which lasted around an hour in length. Even when the horses got sweaty in the warm weather, the flies stayed away.

I tested the Carr & Day & Martin FlyGard Extra Strength Insect Repellent during the month of June on a Fell pony who was being ridden most days out hacking in Cumbria. There were plenty of flies, mainly smaller flies as horse fly/cleg season hadn’t fully begun, so the repellent needed to deter all types of pests and insects.

Manufacturers Carr & Day & Martin are well-known in the equestrian industry for their range of horse care products. They claim that their FlyGard Extra Strength Insect Repellent is a “proven, effective alternative to a natural-based repellent.”

The formula is described as powerful, giving “maximum protection from midges and biting insects.” And while there are arguably stronger fly sprays on the market, it definitely did the job well and I could use it without worrying that it would irritate my pony. You need to strike the balance between protecting from flies, and protecting the skin, hair and coat.

The solution contains the proven, researched active ingredient DEET, at an optimum level of 20%. DEET is an insect repellent that is used in products to prevent bites from insects such as mosquitoes, biting flies, fleas and small flying insects.

The bottle was the first thing I noticed. It was very striking, giving a sleek, high-quality look, and it was smooth to hold.

You can purchase the product in either 500ml or 1l sizes, so you can choose which suits your needs best. If you have multiple horses to spray then the 1l size would probably be best and more cost effective.

This fly spray comes with instructions:

Shake well and spray liberally onto the horse or apply with a cloth, taking care to avoid eyes and mucous membranes. If using for the first time, test on a small area of skin to establish suitability. Provides instant protection, apply twice daily for maximum protection.

With this in mind, we applied the spray before a hack and again if the pony was turned out in the field later in the day.

Out hacking, this spray was effective for about one hour while on the roads. The smaller flies stayed away for the majority of the ride, but the pony didn’t get particularly sweaty during June due to the weather. It is also worth noting that it was more effective than a friend’s spray. After about an hour of riding, flies did start to gather around the pony’s head, so perhaps this spray would be suitable for shorter hacks or for schooling sessions.

I did wonder if this spray would be as effective against horse flies in the warmer weather as the smell of DEET wasn’t very prominent when it was applied, especially for a product labelled as extra-strength.

The sprayer on the bottle was brilliant; it was hard-wearing, robust and provided an even coating of liquid when sprayed onto the coat. It would survive being passed around on a working yard and would be fine to throw into the lorry without worry that it would leak or spill.

It was good to use on the ponies, too, especially those who are not keen on sprayers. It was easy to apply and the mist was delicate enough so they did not fuss or bother when being sprayed up. This is important when you are working with young horses, as you don’t want to upset the apple cart before you’ve even mounted!

The price of £16.95 for a 500ml bottle meant this product would be on the more affordable end of the price scale. I would definitely purchase as a fly spray to use out hacking during spring and early summer.

Verdict

Does the job; an effective and very affordable fly spray containing DEET, suitable for hacks up to an hour in length, or for schooling sessions during warmer weather.

Cavalor Bianco Wash review H&H Approved

This whitening shampoo looked very smart with the dark plastic covering over its bottle – apologies for the fact I ripped it in removing the top part of the plastic before I took the photo above!

Alfie was ready for a bath on the day I used this, as he had had a few weeks without a proper clean up. I used it to give him a wash on a hot morning after he’d done a sweaty jumping session.

The bottle has a flip top which is easy to open with one hand and the shampoo squeezes out easily, but without being so runny it pours out too easily. The shampoo doesn’t have a strong smell and is virtually colourless.

The instructions say to wet the horse and then either apply a small amount directly to the coat or dilute it in lukewarm water and apply with a sponge. I chose to go for the latter but as the temperature was around 23ºC and our stable doesn’t have running hot water, I admit I used the water at the temperature it came out of the tap.

I used a pressured hose gun to add the water after I’d squeezed a blob of the Cavalor Bianco Wash into a bucket and it bubbled up beautifully. You don’t need much shampoo to create a really good lather (I put too much in the bucket the first time, in the photo above), which means that although this shampoo is at the more expensive end of the market (£23.50 for 500ml), it doesn’t represent bad value for money as a bottle should last a long time.

Having wetted Alfie, I used a LeMieux Hippo Scrubber (a sort of combined sponge and curry comb) to apply the diluted shampoo. The dirt was coming out of his coat in rivers!

I didn’t use the shampoo on Alfie’s face as we prefer to use baby shampoo near his eyes.

I used the shampoo neat on his mane and again it lathered up really nicely and went on well. Had this been a show wash, I would have gone over the lower half of his legs again with a blob of neat shampoo, but I’m not sure they really needed it – they looked pretty clean after the diluted wash.

Alfie became a little impatient with his beauty routine once I’d finished washing him – and when Alfie is impatient, he makes sure everyone knows about it. So I decided to pop his fly rug on and let him out in his field to finish drying, then catch him again for a final “after” photo once he was dry.

Unfortunately I forgot one of the fundamental truths of grey horses – that they will always roll straight after a bath – and he chucked himself in the dust as soon as I freed him, so there is no final dry “after” photo. Sorry, readers…

Verdict

I really liked this shampoo – diluting a shampoo is my preferred way of bathing a horse and that tied in with the instructions for this one. I loved how much lather was created from a small amount of shampoo and Alfie’s coat looked and felt clean afterwards. It’s not cheap, but you don’t need a great deal so a bottle should last a good while.

I tested the Cavalor FlyLess fly spray at the height of summer, when flies, particularly horse flies, were at their worst. Cumbrian summers can be wet while being warm and muggy, the perfect environment for flies; even if you choose to hack out early in the morning, you can bet that a swarm of flies will have gathered around your horse by the time you return to the yard. This spray claims to give horses and riders protection against flies, horse-flies, mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects, which would cover all the nasties which lurk in Cumbria during summer time.

The first thing I noticed about the Cavalor Flyless was the amount you get in a bottle. Priced at £24 for a 500ml bottle, you could guess that you’ll have enough to see you through a good amount of hacks. In addition to the 500ml measure, the high quality nozzle produces a very fine, evenly distributed spray which covers the coat perfectly, so you’re not wasting any product during application. The bottle was high-quality, robust and durable, so leaks and spillages would not be a worry. It was also easy to spray; the sprayer was sturdy, easy to use and felt unlikely to break. Some spray bottles have cheap sprayers that aren’t up to life on a working yard and can break halfway through using a bottle, which can be a nightmare. This bottle, however, would be a great one to keep and refill as it has a great spray, is durable and holds nicely in the hand.

Cavalor FlyLess contains icaridin (20.6%), which “acts as a blanket of fragrance on the skin, disrupting the mechanism that attracts insects to humans and animals.” The manufacturers reveal that studies have shown that formulas with 20% icaridin can protect people for up to 10 hours and horses for even up to 24 hours. Icaridin does not kill insects, so there is also no risk of resistance.

Cavalor emphasises that the spray is “pleasantly scented” which was certainly true. It had a light, refreshing, almost aloe vera-type scent (though other noses might detect a different plant smell!) The smell of some fly sprays can be seriously off putting, with the strong scent getting stuck in your nose and even causing you to cough. I’m not particularly sensitive to smells, but an overly strong solution can be an indicator of harsh chemicals.

The back of the bottle provides clear directions on how to use it correctly. It is recommended to spray the solution on the skin or coat — as it’s a gentle formula. I did this, and the spray coated my pony’s skin evenly with plenty of liquid covering each area of his body. I then used a cloth to apply some to his face, as instructed.

The spray didn’t leave a residue on his coat and was non-sticky and non-greasy.

Performance wise, while the Cavalor Flyless initially repelled flies, about 30 minutes into the hack — and as soon as my pony got mildly warm — flies started to gather around his head and neck, suggesting it needed to be reapplied to get the desired result. I therefore did not find it effective for as long as it was claimed. As it would need consistent reapplication, the 500ml bottle might not last as long as initially thought. Consequently, £24 for a 500ml bottle seems quite expensive.

As it was effective for a short period of time, and did smell nice without leaving a greasy residue, I would perhaps recommend this fly spray as one to keep in the lorry or in the grooming box to take to a competition. It would be handy to spritz on before a class, and it would stand the test of time being thrown around in a grooming bag.

Verdict

A refreshingly scented spray which isn’t overly harsh on the skin, but does need consistent reapplication for the desired effect, meaning it isn’t the most effective product on the market.

Reolink Go PT Plus outdoor camera

There are many reasons to consider a camera at your yard – whether you have a small home set-up or a bigger premises – and I was really excited to test the Reolink Go PT Plus owing to the many benefits it offers.

The 2K 4 megapixel wireless 4G PT camera, with smart detection, is an outdoor battery-powered camera costing £245.99. The waterproof camera, which has a two-year warranty, comes in white and is a nice sleek design measuring 112mm x 98mm in size.

I attached the camera to my stables (you could also use it inside the stable, too) – using the screws and mount provided – overlooking my field and its 355° pan and 140° tilt offers a brilliant all-round view. The pan and tilt features are controlled via an app that is free to download on your mobile phone, so you can adjust this on the move. It was easy to assemble by hand and was screwed in using a normal screwdriver into wood. For tougher surfaces a power screwdriver would be beneficial.

I was a little concerned that setting up the device might be complicated, but I would describe it as a straightforward process and the clear operating instructions were easy to understand. One of the biggest bonuses is the camera operates via a 4G pay-as-you-go sim card meaning you do not need Wi-Fi or cabling for it to run – providing you have 4G coverage. I tried both an EE and a Three sim and both allowed the camera to operate in “high” – which is four megapixels. There is also the option to record in mid and low. The manufacturer states 02 and Vodafone sim cards will also work but I would recommend checking which provider offers the best 4G signal in your area first.

Providers offer various 4G sim plans – including pay as you go and a monthly contract. As an example, EE offers a 5GB pay as you go sim for £10, and you can get a 100GB for £30. Under an EE monthly contract you can get unlimited data for £37 a month (prices subject to change). The Reolink Go PT data usage depends on the bitrate you have the camera set up for – recording in high will use more data than lower options. As a guide the manufacturer states that “under normal usage” 2GB of data will be enough for a month, based on 30 minutes continuous live video viewing in high mode, and 10 hours in a lower setting – this can vary from provider to provider. The settings in the camera’s app allows you to change bitrate and resolution to suit your needs.

The Reolink Go PT Plus offers lots of clever features including; Smart person/vehicle detection via a PIR motion sensor (passive infrared sensors that detect heat energy) with alert notifications available via the app or email, night vision up to 33ft, zoom function, cloud storage and SD memory card storage, and time lapse. It has a very effective two-way audio system so you can communicate with someone through the camera using the app and you can also take instant time- and date-stamped screenshots from the live recordings.

There are many different reasons to have an outdoor camera – from added yard security, to keeping a close eye on a poorly or even a new horse in the field, or simply seeing what your horse gets up to when you’re not around. But it’s important to note a camera should not be used as a substitution for daily in-person checks.

I keep my horses at home and like that the camera is providing extra security, which is a big comfort. I really like that if I’m out I can quickly open the app and see my mares grazing in the field – I also appreciate that I can simply do this while watching television in my living room in an evening if I want to. For me, being able to gauge when my mares lie down, when they drink and generally how they interact together and at what times of the day – without disturbing them with my presence – is fascinating and I think a real benefit for owners as we continue to understand more about horse behaviour.

Plus, as an owner of two miniature Shetland ponies who have been known to test the electric fencing is working on occasion, the camera allows me to quickly check my mares are where they should be at any time of the day or night. I can see the camera also being an asset to owners with horses on field rest, or horses with foals, as owners can promptly check on them throughout the day between visits.

As the camera is battery operated, it will need charging which means disconnecting it for a period. The manufacturer states the battery lasts for about one to four weeks per charge, but “actual use varies based on settings”. I found the battery to last around one week on the high function.

Reolink also offers a separate solar panel, costing £24.99, which can be mounted and connected to your camera via USB cable as a charging solution. I have been really impressed while testing the solar panel and think this is a worthwhile investment as this means I don’t need to disconnect my camera to charge it. I have been testing the solar panel during summer in Scotland and we have had lots of sunlight, so I will be interested how this gets on during our long dark winters, but I don’t foresee this causing any major concerns.

Verdict

Overall, I am very impressed with the Reolink Go PT Plus. It would be nice if the solar panel charger was included in the price, but it offers everything I can think I would need from an outdoor camera, and the fact it is wireless offers a real benefit for many horsey premises that don’t have Wi-Fi or electricity. The picture quality is excellent day and night and I wouldn’t hesitate in considering other Reolink products.

Liveryman Bruno lightweight clippers/trimmer review

My first impressions of the Liveryman Bruno clipper and trimmer when I unboxed it was that the handset was lightweight and the soft carry case, complete with clipper oil and a brush for cleaning, would be useful to keep everything neat and tidy.

They came fitted with the A5 1.6mm narrow blade, which is a clip on blade that doesn’t require tensioning, and was suitable for clipping tricky areas such as around the head and legs. They only weigh 400g and are easy to hold, but personally I prefer to use a cordless machine when clipping out legs and heads in particular, and found the 4.9m long mains cable did get in the way at times.

These clippers/trimmers also don’t have any option to adjust the length of the clip without switching blades. That said they did a good job and left a smart finish on a range of coats.

They are very quiet with low vibration and have two speed settings to choose from, making them ideal for horses that are nervous or uncomfortable with a larger, more powerful motor.

These are described by Liveryman as suitable to be used as either a clipper or a trimmer, by switching between the different width snap on A5 blades. I tested them as a trimmer with the narrower blades. And they can be used used with the Liveryman Black Beauty lithium ion battery pack (available for purchase separately) if you need to clip and don’t have main power, which is useful, although I didn’t have the opportunity to test them with the battery pack.

Verdict

The Liveryman Bruno clippers/trimmer are lightweight and leave a good finish when clipping tricking areas.

Having happily clipped horses of all shapes and sizes for the best part of 20 years with another brand of mains-powered clipper, the Liveryman Black Beauty clippers have completely converted me and they are now my clipper of choice.

These clippers are lightweight and easy to use with tension and blade fitting being very straight forward. They are ideal for a professional as they can cope with clipping multiple horses in a row without the blades getting hot. They are supplied with a2 medium blades (2.5mm), which provides a good finish, but they also take an a22 fine blade (1.5mm) if needed.

I’ve clipped all types of horse with these – from Shetlands to thoroughbreds – and the finish has been excellent in all cases. They really do just glide through any thickness of coat.

I particularly like that they have the option to adjust the speed they run at, so if you’re clipping a horse with a particularly fine coat, or doing around the head or legs, you can slow them down, which also reduces the noise slightly if you’re dealing with a sensitive horse. Then you can set the speed back up to full for a hairier horse with a thicker coat or while you are clipping the horse’s body.

The clippers come fitted with an A2 blade, with oil, brush and instruction manual in a robust carry case that is ideal for keeping everything you need at hand, whether that’s in the back of the car or stored in the tack room between uses. I think they are great value for money.

I would be interested to try them with the optional litium-ion battery pack to see if they are equally powerful when not running off the mains – I have no reason to assume they would run any differently, but it would be nice to test it. Having the flexibility to turn these mains clippers into a battery-powered version is an added bonus (clippers complete with battery pack RRP £479), as not all stable yards have mains power and the ability to move around without trailing live cables is be very useful when dealing with nervous horses.

Verdict

H&H Approved – I absolutely love the Liveryman Black Beauty clippers. There is nothing about them I would like to change. They are my first choice for all horse clipping tasks when mains power is available.

Heiniger Xplorer horse clippers review

Having not used Heiniger clippers before, I was looking forward to testing the Heiniger Xplorer clippers. On first impressions they looked to be a quality set of clippers, that were lightweight, comfortable to hold and easy to charge. Once turned on I was impressed with how quiet they were, which combined with no cord, makes them ideal for nervous horses and those being clipped for the first time.

Although Heiniger clippers don’t follow the typical “tighten then turn back one-and-half” instructions to tension, I had no problems setting the tension correctly just by listening to the sound of the blades. (There is a useful video available to help if anyone is unsure.)

I found the battery doesn’t take long to charge and gave me plenty of time to do three straight-forward clips on a single charge (battery advertised as lasting 2hrs when fully charged).

They were great on thick coats – they cut through a shaggy Shetland’s hair like a knife through butter and left a great finish, although they probably wouldn’t be my first choice for clipping a horse with very fine coat or doing fiddly bits like full legs using the standard blades that they came with. You can, of course, purchase different blades in addition to the standard set.

The clippers come in a sturdy carry case that contains the clippers with a standard set of blades and battery, battery charger, oil, cleaning brush, a screwdriver and instructions. The three-year warranty gives peace of mind.

Verdict

A professional set of cordless clippers that, while not the cheapest on the market, are easy to use and give a good finish, particularly on horses with thicker coats.

Overview of performance

This broom was really good at getting dust and dried dirt up, but it also performed well when sweeping wet surfaces. The hollow centre means the bristles are spaced out more, which made it less likely for hay and dirt to get caught – it really worked and I liked this feature.

I liked that it din’t clog, but it was also easy to store and an overall sturdy broom.

We had the 45cm broom on test. This was a nice-looking broom and it was a good size for storing.

Overview of performance

It worked particularly well for sweeping shavings back, but wasn’t as efficient at sweeping dust or water. It worked well for the outside yard sweeping hay, and you could use it equally well sweeping towards or away from you.

I tested the wider broom (50cm), which had the longer handle (147cm). It looked smart, well made and not too bulky. It was also easy to store.

Overview of performance

This broom worked really well when the ground was dry and it was good at getting dry mud up – the scraper helped with this, too. However, it didn’t perform so well when it was wet. Some hay does get caught up, but not too badly – I’ve definitely used much worse. It was a sturdy and durable broom – there were no problems there.

I didn’t like how stiff the broom was because it made it harder to sweep. but it’s a durable sturdy broom. The handle was also too long for me – I would have been better with the shorter version.

The Haygain HG One is designed to feed one horse, for everyday use on the yard or for steaming hay when travelling to shows. Due to it’s lightweight and compact design, it is well suited to smaller yards and fits easily on a lorry. It holds up to 8kg of forage – either in a haynet or loose wedges. The robust chest allows temperatures to reach more than 100ºC, which is vital for killing mould spores and bacteria.

Quick and easy to use, the Haygain HG One steams forage in approximately one hour using a 1.5kW steam generator with a water capacity of 3.5l, which is sufficient for one steaming cycle. The HG One’s lid is double-skinned for exceptional strength and thermal efficiency in all ambient temperatures. The lid has been designed to allow the condensation to collect and fall back evenly onto the hay.

First impressions

This steamer looks robust and like it would be quite heavy, but it was so lightweight – while it’s empty you can lift it up with just one hand. It was really easy to put together and work out how to use it, too.

Overview of performance

Put simply, I loved it and the horses loved it. We used it mostly for one horse who is particularly fussy, but he ate all his hay after had been in the steamer rather than just picking at it as he had before. It comes out so much cleaner and it smells like you’d want to eat it yourself. You can steam one full net at a time and we found it would take less than an hour. It’s perfect for travelling as it’s so easy to move about and transport.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

You can’t see how much water you’re putting in from the outside, but it comes with a handy measuring stick. It would be great if there was a clear window, like you find on a kettle, so that you can easily see how full it is, but I imagine this would be hard to keep clear. I would say that it’s really important that you read the manual and follow the cleaning instructions, particularly when it comes to cleaning the filament.

Verdict

This brush is not only good quality, but it actually cleans the horse well, too. It was comfortable to hold and lasted particularly well. It was easy to clean and dried well.

This is a good hard-wearing body brush. If you look after your kit it’s a good investment, but often yard staff don’t appreciate its value, and it’s quite pricey.

A good brush but only worth the money if you take good care of your kit.

First impressions

This brush looked really smart and well made. I really liked the metal badge logo and thought it looked classy.

Overview of performance

This brush was very soft so I only really used it as a finishing brush. Being soft also made it good for clipped horses. It was comfortable to hold but I found that the handle was too big for me. It lasted well, was easy to clean and dried quickly.

This brush was really nice looking and in general it appeared like it was well made and would be a good brush.

Overview of performance

This brush was better at giving a finishing polish than it was at general cleaning. It was comfortable to hold as the handle was quite loose. It lasted well, was fairly easy to clean and dried quickly after washing.

I liked how smart it looked. I would use again but I prefer brushes with a leather back over wood.

First impressions

I liked the idea of it being anti-bacterial, but I was sceptical that it would make a difference. I also loved the handle — it was comfy and fitted all hands.

Overview of performance

This brush is practical, good and cleans the horse the well. It was really comfortable to hold and use, as well as lasting well and being easy to keep clean. I can’t say I noticed any benefits of the anti-bacterial properties.

I think this product is functionally good, but quite expensive as I didn’t feel it would have much effect on bacteria.

Verdict

A good brush, but I’m not convinced by the anti-bacterial properties.

This proved really effective against the midges and other annoying flies, but not so much against the horseflies. It lasted about eight hours before I needed to reapply it, but it struggled to keep the flies at bay at dusk when the flies were at their worst.

Georgi’s likes and dislikes

I like that the bottle is simple and easy to use with a good spray, while the screw top means that I can easy top it up. I would have liked it to be more effective against the horseflies.

Verdict

It’s a good-to-go, quick and easy-to-use fly spray.

First impressions

The bottle was very thin, so much so that you could smell the fly spray in your hand after picking it up. I did like the branding as it really caught my eye.

Overview of performance

This was not effective as some of the others tested, but it did keep most of the flies at bay for a few hours — I found I had to keep reapplying after a couple of hours. It was quite creamy, but did go onto the horses’ coats well.

Georgi’s likes and dislikes

The spray is easy enough to use, but the bottle is too thin and so not hard-wearing enough. It wasn’t really effective at repelling horse flies.

Verdict

It does work, but it’s quite expensive and I think that there are better fly sprays out there.

A clever and unique way to tie up your horse

Our reviewer found little to dislike about this interesting tether tie for her tricky-to-tie-up horse

The Idolo tether tie is described as a “unique knotless safety release system”. The ties are made in the UK from high grade industrial nylon. This gives the device excellent durability, as well as being rust proof.

The system is based on pressure and release. When the horse pulls back the tie will give them a bit of rope and release the pressure. When the pressure is released this will calm the horse but they will remain tied up.

See video below which illustrates the tie in use.

The tie is designed to have no knots in the rope you are using it with. So, in an emergency situation the rope would easily pass directly through the tether tie to free the horse. However, if there was a knot in the rope or extreme pressure was applied, the Tether Tie is designed to release/give above the shoulders. This safety feature ensures that the horse can be freed in an emergency situation.

The tie offers a choice of two pressures, and it is simple to adjust the pressure you wish to use by simply turning the Tether Tie over.

The tie comes in a variety of colours, and arrived with an instruction leaflet on how to use along with a clip. You can choose between an ‘easy double clip’ or ‘carabiner’ to attach your Idolo tether tie to your tie ring. Whichever option you choose the tie is easy to move to another tie ring. I have both clips and one point to note is that the ‘easy double clip’ did not open quite wide enough to fit on the tie rings of my lorry so I used the ‘carabiner’ for that and the ‘easy double clip’ for standard tie rings around the yard. The tie is really simply to use push a loop of rope through the bottom ring and hook up over the shoulders of the tie, then clip to the tie ring.

The tether ties suggest they can be used with almost any type of leadrope. I however decided to use one of the ropes that the company sells as I thought it would be a good idea to start off with a longer rope to get my horse use to the tie. What I would say is that the ropes Idolo sell are a silkier thread and pull through easier than my standard leadrope, which is quite chunky (pictured, below).

At the age of 14 my horse should know how to stand nicely tied up. However, after many years of being tied to baler twine and other safety alternatives we have got into a bit of a pattern. Something happens he doesn’t like which could be something genuinely scary or it could be that he just doesn’t fancy being washed off, plaited up etc. When put into one of these situations he pulls back, sometimes the string or other safety device will break really easily he will either stand or just mooch off.

Other times more force is required and the headcollar or leadrope will break. On these occasions, he will have panicked that he hasn’t managed to break free straight away he will then tend to not be so keen to be caught or re-tied up.

I have tried a few other safety tie devices and have found they either break too easily or they don’t break unless under extreme pressure.

For years people have tied horses up to baler twine. Nowadays baler twine is of increased strength and when it fails to break this can lead to serious injuries for the horse. However, using thin baler twine has led to the situation I describe above, where, although my horse hasn’t caused injury he has learned he can escape the situation of being tied up by pulling back.

The first use

Off I went to the yard on a nice warm day to wash my horse’s tail armed with my tether tie to see what he made of it. I tied him up and groomed him and he stood quietly. When the water came out he started to get wet he pulled back as he normally would and the tether tie gave him his head, he stopped pulling and looked quite confused as to why he had his head but was still attached. He stood quietly for a while then had another go with the same result. On his third attempt, he started to get pretty grumpy that he couldn’t get free and gave up with pulling back and instead began pawing the ground to show his dislike. However, I managed to wash his tail and he didn’t get free once.

He is an intelligent horse and I am interested to see if after a few more uses he will find a way round it so I will be back to update this review in the near future.

Verdict

I’m hoping the tether tie will safely enable him to learn he has to stay tied up but that in a really emergency situation he can free himself.

The ‘ideal’ tack trolley you can really rely on

The much-anticipated arrival of the tack trolley did not disappoint. I have to confess that I am always slightly anxious when anything arrives flat-packed but the assembly instructions were simple and straightforward.

It was evident from the start that this was a quality product. Every part seemed robust and unsurprisingly fairly utilitarian which is what is required for an item likely to be pushed about on uneven ground or covered in mud throughout the winter.

There was a split-second of mild panic having built it inside while it was raining when I looked up at the standard-sized door on the tack room and wondered if it might not fit, however I needn’t have worried because it went through comfortably.

The tack trolley instantly became one of those pieces of kit you rely upon. It was ideal for loading up with everything that was needed when getting horses ready for hunting. All those fiddly little bits that I used to try to carry at once and ended up dropping such as plaiting kit and the hoof oil brush now live in the trays. All I do is load up the tack and travelling kit for the relevant horse onto the trolley then wheel it to the appropriate stable without the need for several trips.

The horses made no objection to it coming into their stables or moving about on the yard. There are plenty of options with regards to saddle racks and where the trays go plus there is the ability to put the brakes on so it can’t move when travelling.

Verdict

Overall, this is definitely a product that I would highly recommend.

Aesculap Econom CL Battery powered clippers: review

The Aesculap Econom CL Battery powered clippers are for horse use and are a full size set, not trimmers.

When they first arrived I must admit I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of both the travel case they arrived in and the product itself. The carry case holds the clippers, two batteries, charger unit, cables, screwdriver, a small pot of oil and one set of clipper blades.

On unpacking however, I realised that the cables were wired for a two-pin plug system, not one we operate in the UK generally, however I was lucky I had a converter so I was able to get started straight away.

The initial set up was very easy, especially if you have had clippers before. The blades attach with two screws with a screw tightener on top of the unit to adjust the tension. The battery simply slides into place and is held securely by a metal clip.

Having done an awful lot of clipping in my life, I have always steered clear of battery clippers in general. Probably for fear of running out part way through and that a battery pack could be a little cumbersome. Not so with this set! They are light and easy to use and the extra bonus of having two batteries in this pack alleviated my concerns about running out part way through. In fact I managed to clip my 18hh horse completely, without rushing and only had to switch to the second battery towards the end of the clip. The battery life appears very good indeed. An added bonus is, pressing a button on the bottom of the battery tells you how much battery is left.

The charger unit for the batteries is exceptionally simple to use, very similar to something you would see for DIY drill. The clippers themselves are very lightweight and easily comparable to a standard mains powered set.

They provided a very good quality clip and this was reassuring as I wouldn’t normally be brave enough to go for a brand I had not previously heard of myself or from friend or colleagues. They run very quietly and don’t blow the hair in any awkward directions. As I am completely allergic to horsehair, it meant I didn’t suffer anywhere near as much as normal.

Verdict

I am a complete convert to battery clippers. There is no cable getting the way, with no fear of the horse treading on it accidently. You are free to easily, greatly speeding up the whole process. A definite winner for me.

Totally Smart EquiGroomer: review

Our reviewer found this bit of grooming kit to be a useful tool for removing dead hair

The EquiGroomer is relatively new to the market and has been described as “probably the best shedding tool in the grooming market”, so as you can imagine I was excited to put it to the test. I tested a large (12cm) EquiGroomer in green.

Described simply, the EquiGroomer is a hardened steel blade set in a solid wooden handle. I was initially a bit wary when I first received the product, as the blade appeared to be very sharp. For this reason I would want to supervise children using the product. I am also not too keen on wooden handles, as I find that they are at risk of chipping when they are inevitably dropped on the yard. However, I loved its fun, bright green colour – a welcome addition to my grooming kit.

The product is designed to easily comb through thick, dense hair, without being uncomfortable for the horse. The tool removes dead, loose hair and dirt, leaving the coat smooth and shiny. As I received the product in December my horse was fully clipped, and although the product description claims that the tool is good for sensitive horses, I decided to wait until shedding season to test it on him. This is predominantly due to the fact that he can be a bit tickly and as he was fully rugged there wasn’t a lot of mud on him.

In comparison, we have a small Dartmoor pony at the yard who is not clipped and very much enjoys rolling in the mud. I found that the EquiGroomer performed similarly to a metal curry comb and was effective at removing dried mud from his long coat. The blade is not too sharp to use on the horses, so do not be put off by its initial appearance.

Now that we are coming into summer I am using the EquiGroomer on all of the horses at the yard and have had no problems with it. Even our most sensitive horses enjoy being groomed with it. It is a good length so you can groom a good patch at any given time — it has proved brilliant at removing any remaining winter coat, especially on our Shetland and Dartmoor ponies. It is also especially effective at lifting grease and wax from the horse’s coat (see image below), leaving them nice and shiny, however this is slightly tricky to clean off the blade. You will notice in the video how much dead hair the tool removes, even from a horse with a short coat.

In addition to the horses we have also used this tool on the dogs. It works just as well on them and they thoroughly enjoy the experience. I find that the large EquiGroomer is fine for bigger dogs, however you may want to consider buying the smaller size (6.5cm) if you have a small dog.

Due to the nature of the product it has rusted slightly where it has got wet, however this can be expected of a steel product but still performs well. Although it is made from hardened steel I do wonder if the blade will wear down in time, becoming less effective and will therefore have to be replaced. Saying this we have tested this product for a good six months and it performs as well as it did on the first day.

Overall I would recommend this tool to anyone who wants a quick and effective way of removing dead hair during shedding season. I personally would not use it on clipped horses, and I prefer using it for shedding rather than removing mud, however I appreciate that it is an innovative and versatile tool that I feel would be a welcome addition to any grooming kit.

Noble Outfitters Wave Fork: review

The Wave Fork is a substantial fork for mucking out stables, as any other shavings fork would be used. However, it has had a makeover as far as shavings forks go, it is constructed of multiple individual tines that interlock with a raised flat sided prong on each side of the fork to create a basket like base to collect the maximum amount in each forkful.

The individual tines are designed to bend instead of break but should there be any problems, the tines can be changed by removing a clever end clip from the side of the fork and replacing only the damaged tines, instead of the entire head. This feature has also allowed the fork to be sold in numerous colour combinations to suit yard/club colours or just to combine your personal favourites.

The handle is ‘aircraft grade’ aluminium to add strength and durability to the fork without compromising the need for it to be lightweight for the user. It has a plain handle at the end and a moveable foam hand support on the shaft for comfort.

To begin with all of the above features sounded great, we have all suffered from broken tines or broken handles and had to throw the whole fork away when only one part was faulty, however, in practice with a number of users at our premises we all found the fork to be a little ‘clunky’ to use. Whilst it is not at all heavy, it can feel cumbersome compared to the forks we were used to and the heads felt a little loose on the shaft. This may be a very personal thing as I think we become slightly attached to the ‘familiar’ or ‘our old favourites’.

One place the fork did perform quite well was in the process of tidying the muck heap/throwing muck up. It will hold a substantial amount of waste bedding to move in one go allowing you to move quickly and get the job done.

After some time, we also found the end basket style tines developed a habit of separating from the rest of the fork with considerable ease. While never completely detaching (and pushing simply back into place), we found this happening more and more frequently, to the extent that it was eventually wearing the plastic lug that the tine should locate on to. So much so on one fork that our staff decided to remove them altogether. Now, presuming this is all covered under the 5-year guarantee this is great, however it can be very frustrating and time consuming when you are rushing through a bed and keep having to stop to realign things. That said, after continued heavy use we have had no tine breakages or wear and tear to the handles, but I don’t think at this stage our staff will be rushing to give up their ‘old favourites’ just yet.

Verdict

A fairly sturdy bit of kit with some great features, but not enough to make our reviewer stop using his old favourites

HÜF Design feed SKÜP: review

The scoop is light but feels sturdy with an easy grip handle and comes in some vibrant colours and makes a bright addition to your feed room.

The unique teeth really do break up sticky feed such as competition mix and molassed chaff and make it much easier to get a full scoop of feed without hacking away.

This scoop works best if you keep your feed in a feed bin rather than scoop from the bag, however it still performs better than a flat edged scoop. It was great to get right into the corners of square bins, breaking up stubborn compact food.

This scoop could save time for anyone that has to make up multiple feeds each day.

SolarHub 16 power source: review

Our reviewer loved this smart little free power supply

The SolarHub 16 is a solar powered energy source that makes it possible to provide light and power to remote/difficult/mobile sites. A small solar panel charges the ‘Hub’ that stores the energy, which can then be used to power/charge multiple devices such as lights, usb charger cables (5v to charge phones/tablets) or anything working from a (12v) lighter socket.

The system is incredibly simple and straight forward to get up and running. It is simply a matter of plugging in the relevant cables from the solar panel to the hub and in our case from the hub to the LED strip light (provided). The light is very small and yet it is capable of lighting a 12’ by 12’ stable incredibly effectively. All of the cabling is set up to allow countless extensions to be incorporated to suit your requirements, without any need for any tools or wiring know how, they simply plug together and have a screw cap cover to protect the join.

The Solar Panel is best sited in a position with maximum access to the sun, however it is designed to gather charge even on an overcast day. The Solar panel is small enough to be very discreet yet very capable of gathering charge, it has a bracket to angle it away from the surface you attach it to, to gather the most charge possible. The Hub has an easy to read battery symbol on the front indicating how much charge is remaining (with each unit equating to 25% of the batteries’ capacity), along with the on/off power switch, on/off light switch and the (5v) and (12v) charging sockets. It has a small electricity bolt symbol that illuminates to let you know it is charging from the solar panel.

We placed the solar panel on the side of a double stable mobile unit that had no power supply and the change was instant. The power of the small LED strip was fabulous, and we very quickly ordered a second with an extension cable to light the second stable. The light is powerful enough even to have benefit in daylight hours if you have a slightly dark stable and we have not yet exceeded the storage power of the Hub. We can now comfortably groom and work around the two (three-year-old) horses housed in the unit in the dark, allowing us an incredible amount of freedom.

The entire unit is designed to be weather proof with the exception of the Hub. This was the only problem we encountered, as with such young horses we couldn’t risk installing it anywhere in either of the stables, we resorted to storing it in a plastic container outside the stables which still allowed us easy access to the unit for switching on and off (drilling a small hole in the container to feed the cables through, and a small hole on the side of the building to feed the lights cable through).

We were so impressed by the whole system. Easy to use and install, sensibly priced and completely adjustable/extendable to fit your requirements. We could not recommend the Solar Hub 16 enough for anyone requiring a self-sufficient system to supply a remote or awkward site, and the best part, no bills for the electricity!

Following publication of this review, the manufacturer has introduced a bracket that can be screwed to the wall at the desired height and location to hold the SolarHub unit out of harm’s way. The toughened, durable coating of the bracket protects the SolarHub unit and can be wiped clean. One end of the bracket is open and allows easy access to all five sockets and power switches, while the unit is held in place with a foam pad. The auxiliary cable locates through a hole in the closed end of the bracket. The bracket comes complete with six screws and wall plugs and has a two year warranty. It costs £14.99.

Verdict

We could not recommend the SolarHub 16 enough for anyone requiring a self-sufficient system to supply electricity to a remote or awkward site.

Muck Rake ‘The Rake’: review

This one is made to be far more solid than the most common thin metal version. It is more substantial in appearance, formed of a hard plastic central section, with a metal blade on one side and small metal prongs on the other.

The handle is longer than most making it user friendly and easier on the operators back and the handle is covered in a soft grip to make it more comfortable to use.

The handle is aluminium and so corrosion proof unlike the more traditional rakes.
