First impressions of the Maaree Solidarity sports bra

I was lucky enough to catch up with the Maaree team at the National Equine Show where I was fitted specifically for a Solidarity high-impact sports bra. Since breastfeeding, I have found it difficult to find the right support especially when riding, but this sports bra made me feel supported and comfortable again.

During my fitting I was surprised to go up a cup size and down a band size, ending up with a size 34FF. I would strongly recommend taking advantage of their bra fittings, which they offer either in person at events or via Zoom as it could make all the difference. The back has multiple hook-and-eye settings, the shoulder straps and overband are adjustable, and it can even be converted into a racerback.

Overview of performance

This fitted really well with plenty of adjustment, which allowed me to get the perfect fit. It was comfortable and the overband made a real difference. It has washed well and shows no signs of wear even after regular use. I have worn this bra for the last three months for schooling, hacking, jumping, running on the treadmill and even the odd boogie bounce class and I cannot fault it.

I feel much more supported than my previous sports bra with noticeable less bounce, thanks to the overband. I also love that you can wear it as a racerback for times you need extra support and usually opt for this style. I have not suffered any chafing under the breasts because the support band is wide and well-fitted, so doesn’t rub when you move. I also noticed I didn’t get as hot and sweaty as I have done in other sports bras. It also didn’t dig in anywhere, so I often forgot I had a sports bra on at times.

Overall, this is a flattering sports bra that provides good support. I would strongly recommend this sports bra if your budget can stretch and you are looking for all-day support and comfort. I like it as I can wear it at the yard and the gym for long periods of time and it offers support without feeling restricted.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* This is the most comfortable and well fitted sports bra I own. I was finding riding uncomfortable, especially after having a baby, but this sports bra is amazing. I would highly recommend it – as well as the professional fitting.

If you’re looking for the best sports bras for horse riding you’ve come to the right place. Studies have shown that less than 35% of female horse riders in the UK wear a sports bra compared with the vast majority of runners, despite the impact not being all that different. Three in four riders also reported that they wanted an improvement in bra support, style and fit for riding and breast pain was found to be the fourth-greatest barrier to riding for women.

Wearing a sports bra can reduce breast movement by 80%, while a normal bra only achieves a 38% reduction. Reducing movement prevents breast pain and damage to the breast tissues, so a good sports bra should be an essential part of your riding kit.

The good news is that as well as being practical, lots of equestrian brands have designed sports bras that look great – and don’t show through competition shirts, either.

Choosing the best sports bras for horse riding

Firstly you need to decide on what style bra is best for you. The general rule is that encapsulating sports bras (where each breast is encapsulated separately, such as the Pure Lime high impact bra) are better for larger breasts, whereas compression bras (that squash the breast tissue into the chest, such as the Shires Aubrion Dagenham sports bra) is preferable for smaller breasts.

It’s important that your new sports bra fits correctly – follow these steps for a good fit…

• Straps – the shoulder straps should not be too tight or dig into the skin. Adjustable straps are ideal.
• Cups – there should be no bulging or gaping and the top or sides.
• Underband – this shouldn’t slide around your chest, but neither be too tight, uncomfortable or cause flesh to bulge at the edges.
• Front – this is the lower edge under the breasts (and sometimes between the cups) and should sit flat against the body.
• Underwire – if the bra is wired, it shouldn’t rest on any of the tissue (including in the centre, under the breast or arms)

When it comes to colour, if you’re worried about it showing through a white competition shirt you’re best to choose a nude or white. Otherwise the world’s your oyster when it comes to fun colours and prints. Finally, to check that the bra is offering you enough support for the level of impact you need, try jumping up and down in it to assess how it might stand up to the job.

First impressions

I couldn’t get this one over my shoulders – I had a medium – so Sian tested this one for me. Our first observation was that you wouldn’t be able to wear this one under a competition shirt without a jacket due to the colour.

Overview of performance

This fitted Sian really well – so we’d say it comes up slightly smaller and is more suited to someone with narrower shoulders. It was comfortable and really stretchy, which made it easier to put on. It wore well and the colour stayed strong through plenty of washes.

Sian’s likes and dislikes

I liked the design and the underband. The padding in the front of the bra moved around in the wash and there was no way of accessing the lining to sort them out easily, which is a bit of a headache. Overall, this sports bra is fantastic value for money.

This bra had no padding, but it fitted me well and I felt secure. It was comfortable and had a good level of stretch so, although Sam struggled, I found it easy to put on. It washed well and stayed the same shape, but it did suffer a small bit of wear over time.

I absolutely love that it’s made of recycled nets – it’s really cool and the material actually feels lovely. The design was plain but that was fine because it made it great for wearing under a white competition shirt. You can’t go wrong with such a basic style – I wear it with everything.

This one came in a size L, but as it was an over-the-head one and I have broad shoulders I struggled to get it on, so I gave it to Sian.

As it was a bit big it was difficult to assess the support, but I think it was a really flattering shape and style. It washed fine and wore really well. I wore it all day and it was comfortable – if it had been my size I’m confident I would have really loved this bra.

I had a medium, which is the size I would normally order but I couldn’t get it on over my shoulders. I gave it to Sian to test as she would normally order a small/medium.

Overview of performance

This bra came up smaller than expected, but it fitted Sian well – she found it secure and really comfortable, so was happy wearing it all day. It was lightweight, so it felt like you weren’t wearing one – in a good way as it wasn’t restricting. Sian loved the design and felt well supported. Having narrow shoulders, she found it much easier to put on over her head than I did. It wore really well and the detailing is still in tact after plenty of washes, which was a pleasant surprise to both of us.

We loved the colour and the wide underband, which Sian found really stretchy and comfortable. It’s the sort of style she really likes, but would recommend going up a size, especially if you have broader shoulders, because they come up quite small.

First impressions

I thought this looked quite strange and quite awkward, but I could see the inspiration behind it and where the design has evolved from.

Overview of performance

I had a medium, but it was a little on the large side so I probably would have been better with a small. It was well packaged and the instructions were really helpful. It was easy to put on but took a while to get used to. It felt a bit restrictive, especially at first, but as I got used to it I found it more useful. I wore it at boot camp and it did stop my boobs moving. It washed well, although the elastic did stretch a bit.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

The colour wasn’t the most practical, but it was fun and you could get it in a range of other colours if you preferred another. It was a nice concept, but I don’t think I would use it in the future. However, if you’re struggling with your sports bra this could help as an added extra.

At Olympia Horse Show back in December I was lucky enough to come across the LessBounce.com stand while writing my shopping blog. As a keen rider who could be described as somewhat “top heavy” I thought that I would have a quick look at the sports bras on offer.

The girls on the stand were extremely helpful and offered me a professional fitting. As they were so friendly and welcoming the prospect of stripping off during the festive period didn’t feel quite as daunting so I tried on the Panache non-wired and wired sports bras in latte and hot pink respectively.

The Panache bras were recommended as they give excellent support in a range of sizes. The bras also feature a “J” clip to give a multiway option for racer back shaped straps. This is a benefit if you’re looking for some extra support or your workout clothes have a racer back.

Research at Loughborough University found the Panache underwired bra to be the best on the market, giving 83% less bounce. The design is fully encapsulated and high at the front, ensuring that the bust is fully supported. The shoulder straps and rear fastening are adjustable and lightly padded, giving a more comfortable fit, as they do not dig in.

The first interesting thing that I must point out is that I went up a cup size and down a back size compared to the bra size that I usually wear. This shows the importance of being measured professionally, and increasing statistics show that a large number of women actually wear the incorrect bra size. For this reason I would strongly recommend a professional bra fitting, whether you’re looking to buy a sports bra or not.

At first both bras felt very tight around the back, but I feel that this is because I have got used to wearing a bigger size. I immediately fell in love with the underwired bra, however I was a bit suspicious of the non-wired bra, purely because I had never worn one before. This is because given the chance to go out and buy a bra I would always opt for an underwired bra, so it was interesting to be given the chance to test something that I would not usually wear. The tradestand had a riding simulator to test the bras, however I found staying on board somewhat challenging. For this reason I promised to take the bras home to try on board a real horse.

The first time I put the underwired bra on to ride I still found it tight around the back. However, as soon as I got used to it I forgot it was there. In fact, I completely forgot that gravity doesn’t always work in my favour, as the bra is so comfortable to wear. I kept it on for the morning and happily completed all yard duties, schooled one horse, jumped another and took a third to the gallops. There truly was a lot less bounce and I found the bra very breathable when I got hot.

As the bra matched my gym clothes so well it seemed a shame not to wear it to the gym that evening. It held up (excuse the pun) just as well in the gym as the saddle and was perfect for cardio, including running — something I’m sure many of us struggle with without an adequate sports bra.

As I try and compete most weekends the next test for the bra was to withstand a day’s showjumping. I was slightly worried about wearing my new hot pink bra under my competition shirt so I popped the nude non-wired bra on instead. As mentioned earlier I am a bit wary of non-wired bras and would never have dreamed of competing in one… until now. I absolutely loved competing in this bra. It was unnoticeable under my shirt and its subtle padding still fitted out my show jacket nicely. I believe that it performed just as well as the underwired bra and the lack of wires were a benefit showjumping as there’s nothing to risk digging in when I fold.

The non-wired bra proved to be the ideal competition bra as you forget it’s there. I now prefer it to the wired bra for a day’s competing. I would never have thought to ride, let alone compete, in a non-wired bra, so I am glad that I did.

When comparing the two bras I do not notice much difference in terms of performance. Statistically the underwired bra is superior, however when fitted properly you cannot notice much difference in the saddle. The only thing that I would preference the underwired bra for is cardio. My wired bra accompanies me to all cardio sessions and is a favourite at the weekly spin class. Despite this I would not be opposed to wearing the non-wired bra for floorwork, weights, yoga and pilates. However, I must point out that the bra is described as “lightly padded so no nipples show through”. Sorry if this verges on too much information but I found this not to be the case in the gym, but then again it is winter… just a heads up girls!

Overall I would strongly recommend these bras. I like them as I can wear them at the yard and the gym and their padding gives a good shape. If you don’t like padded sports bras I would recommend trying one on before you buy. These bras have to be hand washed which is a bit of a pain, but this is common with a lot of bras in order to preserve their longevity. I would definitely recommend these bras, and a professional fitting, to a friend and I now have one in pink, black, white and nude.
