Germany’s Sönke Rothenberger and Fendi have been ruled out of the European Dressage Championships because the stallion has sustained a “minor injury” – as the medal-winning rider reveals he is due to become a father.

The nine-year-old Franklin son was due to make his championship debut with Sönke on home soil at Riesenbeck next month (4-10 September), where reigning champions Germany will be aiming to defend their title. Sönke was part of the 2019 gold medal-winning squad, and won individual bronze, on Cosmo 59.

Today (18 August) Sönke said the decision had been made that he and Fendi will not take part owing to Fendi’s “minor injury”.

Sönke and Fendi were part of the winning Nations Cup squad in Aachen in July, and won the grand prix and grand prix special at the Hagen CDI4* in April. Last year they won the prestigious Louisdor Prize final, a series for young grand prix horses aged eight to 10.

“Fendi is only nine years old and certainly at the beginning of his career. The wellbeing of my horse comes first,” said Sönke.

“Of course there is still a lot of time until Riesenbeck, but the thought has matured in me that I don’t want to put any pressure on Fendi, who at just nine years old, doesn’t have to fulfil all hopes and expectations. He gets the time he needs. His time will come, it feels like the coming winter is exactly the time we need to consolidate.”

Sönke thanked the German officials who “put their trust” in him and Fendi and selected him for the team.

“I wish the German team a successful home European Championships and keep my fingers crossed,” he said, adding that he has “another big event coming up”.

“Now I’m looking forward to the coming weeks as my wife (Svenja) and I are expecting our son in early September.”

The German team that will compete at the European Dressage Championships features Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and TSF Dalera BB, Frederic Wandres and Bluetooth OLD, and Isabell Werth and DSP Quantaz. Matthias Rath and the 10-year-old Totilas son Thiago GS are first reserves, and expected to replace Sönke and Fendi.

Matthias last competed on a team at the 2015 Europeans with Totilas, where controversy arose over the stallion’s soundness, and the pair were withdrawn from the competition following the grand prix. Despite this the German team, featuring Kristina Bröring Sprehe, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Isabell Werth still went on to claim team bronze.

Four combinations have been selected as nominated entries for the German dressage team at the European Dressage Championships this September, to be held at Riesenbeck, Germany.

Definite entries for the championships are not expected to be confirmed until the middle of August, but the German Olympic Committee for Equestrianism has listed just four riders on the home side’s “longlist”, along with three reserve combinations.

Germany are the reigning European champions, having won gold at Hagen in 2021, as well as at Rotterdam in 2019. Germany also won team bronze at last year’s World Dressage Championships, behind Denmark and Britain.

The nominated entries for the German dressage team at the 2023 European Dressage Championships are:

Withdrawals, retirements and disrupted competition schedules have led to a late shake-up of nations and squads ahead of the Olympic dressage at Tokyo.

Sönke Rothenberger’s Olympic, World and European team gold medal-winning ride Cosmo 59 will not be campaigned for this year’s championships as the 14-year-old gelding “is not at the level of performance of previous years”.

The combination helped Germany to team gold at the 2016 Olympics, 2018 World Equestrian Games (WEG), the 2017 and 2019 European Championships, plus the 2014 young rider Europeans. They have also won multiple silver and bronze individual medals at the World Championships as well as youth and senior Europeans.

Sönke, 26, remains in contention for this championships with Santiano R.

Ireland will be without its leading combination of Judy Reynolds and Vancouver K at Tokyo, after Judy announced the retirement of her Rio 2016 ride.

“Tokyo of course made this decision harder. I would so love to be there, but I don’t want to just be there, I want to be competitive,” she told H&H on Thursday (3 June). “But I’ll aim for Paris 2024 – I have no intention of JP being my only good horse.”

Australia Lyndal Oatley has withdrawn her rides Elvive and Eros from Tokyo convention owing to the pandemic affecting her preparation.

“Although both horses have qualified for the Games, Elvive and Eros are inexperienced at international level,” she said.

“While they show great promise for the future I feel it’s too much to ask of both horses to be in the form I would want them to be in for the Games. My horses’ wellbeing will always come first, and we will instead look ahead to the World Equestrian Games in 2022.”

She added: “I will be cheering on our Australian team and all those competing at Tokyo 2020 from afar and wish all horses, athletes and teams a safe and successful Olympic Games.”

Other recent withdrawals from contention include Olympian Daniel Pinto and his ride Santurion De Massa, who represented Portugal at the 2015 and 2017 Europeans, owing to health reasons.

“Santurion de Massa is a horse of a lifetime that blessed us with many joyful moments and allowed important conquests in the dressage ring. The ultimate goal is to focus on bringing him back to a healthy condition,” said a statement from the rider.

“We don’t have enough words to express our gratitude to all the great support voiced by the equestrian community worldwide. We will keep on following the Olympic dream closely – we will be represented by an incredible team of talented riders and horses with great quality. We wish them the best of luck and we will be cheering for you every step of the way.”

The Dutch combination of Anne Meulendijks and MDH Avanti NOP, who helped the Netherlands to team silver at the 2019 Europeans as well as multiple medals at young rider and under-25 championships, are also out.

“Together with the head coach I chose to withdraw Avanti for the trajectory towards the Tokyo Olympics,” Anne announced on Sunday (6 June).

“Avanti is 16 years old of course and maybe that year later [owing to the Games’ postponement] is at our disadvantage now, but he is still a great fit and I still enjoy him every day. I would like to keep doing this for a while so we chose to only put it in for the fun and beautiful games.

“The circumstances in Tokyo are not easy and certainly for a little older horse this is quite a risk. We therefore choose Avanti’s wellbeing so that we can enjoy him for a long time and experience more beautiful moments together.”

Reshuffle of nations

Norway and New Zealand have both let go of their Olympic spots, while Malaysia and Italy have received late invitations.

Norway’s qualified rider, Ellen Birgitte Farbrot, announced her withdrawal from the Olympic spot on Thursday (3 June) following consultation with her ride Tailormade Red Rebel’s owners.

“[The decision is] based on the fact that Tailormade Red Rebel is still new to this level and both Covid and EHV made it close to impossible to give him the show and travel experience needed,” she said.

“With that said my ‘athlete heart’ wants us to go, also knowing it might never happen again. If the travel was not that far, it would have been a different story.”

She added she is still “extremely happy” that their qualifying runs went well, for everyone’s support and is looking ahead to the European Championships and the 2022 World Championships.

“I’m delighted to learn that my withdrawal makes an opportunity for another country to send one of their candidates,” she said. “Sometimes the journey is the destination.”

New Zealand announced on Saturday (5 June) that “despite best endeavours”, it will not be sending combinations to either the Olympic or the Paralympic dressage.

Riders’ quests for qualification have been heavily impacted by pandemic and EHV-1 restrictions, meaning no combinations in either dressage or para dressage have been able to achieve the Equestrian Sport New Zealand (ESNZ) nomination criteria that indicates the possibility of a top-16 performance at the Games.

“I sympathise with the riders and applaud their efforts to exhaust all options,” said Jock Paget, ESNZ high performance general manager.

“We have worked closely with the New Zealand Olympic Committee to do everything we can to try and qualify combinations and we thank them for their flexibility but unfortunately it’s not to be this time. We will have to turn our attention for dressage and para dressage to the World Championships next year.”

Jock added: “There is so much skill, hard work, commitment and sacrifice that goes into qualifying and then actually lining up for an Olympic Games, let alone trying to do it in the middle of a global pandemic.

“I trust this will be good fuel to their WEG campaigns next year.”

The swings and roundabouts that is equestrian sport mean the disappointment of some nations spells opportunity for others.

The Italian equestrian federation confirmed it had been offered a place thanks to results obtained by Tatiana Miloserdova and Florento Fortuna.

Malaysian equestrian federation president Syed Omar Syed Abu Bakar Al Mohdzar shared his congratulations to rider Qabil Ambak, the nation’s top rider, on his spot at the Games.

“This is not only a milestone for the national sport but for our country, as it is the first time a Malaysian is represented in equestrian events at the Olympics Games,” he said.

“The Olympics provides us with a special occasion to unite in so many ways, especially given the global challenges faced amidst the Covid pandemic.

“We are grateful that all parties have worked together to make the Olympic Games in Tokyo possible. More so now than ever before, we hold on to the spirit of the Olympics, this is an opportunity to cheer on our athlete and fly our flag high.

“By being part of the Malaysian Olympic squad, Qabil Ambak is a role model for the equestrian sport and for all Malaysians. We wish him the greatest success and look forward to cheering him on.”

Qabil needs one final qualifying result to take up his Tokyo invitation, which he is hoping to achieve at Le Mans CDI4* (17 to 20 June).

Germany’s Isabell Werth scored her third consecutive World Cup title with her brilliant black mare Weihegold OLD last weekend (4-6 April). We delve into the Don Schufro daughter’s past to find out why she is one of the most successful dressage horses the world has ever seen…

1. Weihegold OLD has held the number one spot on the FEI world rankings almost continuously since October 2016, with the exception of two months last autumn when Laura Graves’ Verdades temporarily replaced her in the top spot. Her reign of 23 consecutive months has been beaten only by Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro’s 30 months at the head of the rankings.

2. The 14-year-old mare has scored more than 90% four times in competition. Her personal best score is 90.98%, which she and Isabell earned on their way to earning their third gold medal of the 2017 European Championships in Gothenburg.

3. Weihe and Isabell have posted just one score below 80% since the Wiesbaden CDI5* in May 2016. They have just six sub-80% scores on their entire record, from 46 starts.

4. Isabell is not the only rider to have competed Weihe successfully in international competition. For several months in 2015, Weihe was campaigned by Isabell’s assistant trainer Beatrice Buchwald at international grand prix, never scoring below 71%.

5. Only two combinations have beaten Weihe since the retirement of Valegro — the USA’s Laura Graves with Verdades on two occasions, and Isabell’s German teammate Sonke Rothenberger (Cosmo) once in 2018.

6. Weihe has had 13 foals by embryo transfer, thus not disrupting her competition and training schedule. These include two licensed sons: Total Hope, by Totilas, and Sir Weihbach, by Sir Donnerhall I.

7. Weihe herself was bred by Inge and Gunter Bastai and born in Germany on 7 July 2005, out of a Sandro Hit x Figaro mare named Weihevoll. Her current owner, Christine Arns-Krogman, bought her as a yearling.

The Helgstrand-sponsored dressage competition at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon continues today (Friday, 14 September), with the grand prix special. All four members of the British team — who won bronze behind Germany and the USA yesterday — have qualified and will compete at the following times:

• Emile Faurie with Hof Kasselmann’s Dono Di Maggio — 11.10 am local time (4.10pm UK time)
  
• Spencer Wilton with his own and Jen Goodman’s Super Nova II — 3pm local time (8pm UK time)
• Carl Hester with his own, Ann Cory and Anne Evans’ Hawtins Delicato — 4.10am local time (9.10pm UK time)

The top 30 combinations from Wednesday and Thursday’s grand prix contest the special, which serves as a qualifier for the grand prix freestyle on Sunday, 16 September. The very first dressage rider into the arena will be Belgium’s Laurence Roos and Fil Rouge, at 10.30am local time (3.30pm UK time). Ireland’s individual competitor, Judy Reynolds with Vancouver K, will go at 11.20am local time (4.20pm UK time).

For the newly crowned world champions Germany, the first rider into the arena today will be Dorothee Schnieder and Sammy Davis Jr at 3.10pm local time (8.10pm UK time) followed by Jessica von Bredow-Werndl with TSF Dalera BB at 3.30pm (8.30pm). Sonke Rothenberger and Cosmo, who finished third in the grand prix with plus-81%, will ride at 4.50pm (9.50pm UK time), with Isabell Werth and Bella Rose, who scored plus-84% to lead the grand prix, the last combination to ride the special, at 5.10pm (10.10pm UK time) on Thursday.

Silver medallists the USA will kick off with Steffen Peters and Suppenkasper at 12.50pm (5.50pm UK time). Adrienne Lyle and Salvino will follow at 2.40pm (7.40pm UK time), while Kasey Perry-Glass and Goerklintgaards Dublet will compete at 3.40pm (8.40pm UK time). Laura Graves, who took second in the grand prix, will begin her test with Verdades at 4.40pm (9.40pm UK time), after which the medals will be awarded.

Germany’s Isabell Werth proved unbeatable yet again as she secured her third gold of the European Dressage Championships. The world number one rode a flawless freestyle on the 12-year-old Don Schufro mare Weihegold OLD (below) and posted a massive 90.98%, edging out her compatriot Sonke Rothenberger (Cosmo) by just 0.3%.

“I knew I couldn’t allow even the slightest mini mistake in there and I felt Weihe was at her very best,” said Isabell, whose score was just a shade under the Europeans record of 91.25%, set by Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro in 2013.

With Cathrine Dufour and Atterupgaards Cassidy claiming their second individual bronze medal of the championships, scoring a freestyle personal best of 84.56%, it meant Britain’s Carl Hester and the Don Ruto son Nip Tuck (below) had to settle for an agonising fourth place after briefly holding the lead earlier in the competition.

Carl and ‘Barney’ performed a brilliant freestyle, with his difficult floorplan showing off the 18hh gelding’s accuracy and exceptional talent for the collected work. Just a couple of little spooks marred the routine, and they were rewarded with 80.6%.

“He was a little difficult in there, but I never know what he might see in an arena,” said Carl, who was visibly disappointed to lose out on a medal. “His scores have gone up all week and that’s how you hope a championship will go. To be fourth at the European Championships with Barney is very satisfying — we’ve come such a long way together.

“It’s all testament to his temperament — he’s a worker and he tries very hard, and he finds it easy to do difficult things, which helps in the kür.”

Britain’s Spencer Wilton finished in 13^th with Jen Goodman’s Supernova II. The pair posted 75.44% in just their second grand prix freestyle.

“I knew it was going to be a challenge, but he’s never experienced anything like this before,” said Spencer of the 13-year-old gelding. “I realised today that ‘Neville’ really needs to know where he’s going — he felt a bit lost at times in there.

“It’s a whole different pressure in the freestyle — it’s not about hitting your markers, it’s about hitting your notes.”

Germany’s Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD have claimed the gold medal in the grand prix special at the European Dressage Championships in Gothenburg, with British riders finishing just outside the medals.

Carl Hester and Nip Tuck (below) completed a faultless round to finish a very credible fifth on 76.77%, just ahead of Spencer Wilton and Supernova II who wound up sixth after leading the class for a long time.

“I could not be more happy with him,” said Carl of his own and Jane de la Mare’s 13-year-old Don Ruto gelding, who had the misfortune of following the three medallists into the arena.

“He was really relaxed in trot today; he’s done really well in that company. I’m just pleased to be in the top five so I get a late draw for tomorrow’s freestyle. It’s all I could have hoped for.”

As expected, Isabell took the title on her stunning Don Schufro mare (below), posting 83.61% — the pair’s highest grand prix special score to date. However, her teammate the 22-year-old Sonke Rothenberger gave her a run for her money, claiming silver with 82.47% on the powerful 10-year-old Van Gogh son Cosmo.

“Weihe is in the best shape ever and has been so focused and consistent this year,” said Isabell. “Today she was really with me and I could take some risks, though I had to be careful not to make a mistake because I knew the others were trying to pressure on me. My first piaffe could have been better but that was all.”

Denmark’s Cathrine Dufour scored just a shade under 80% with 79.76% to scoop bronze with the 14-year-old Atterupgaards Cassidy, whom she has partnered since juniors.

“He was more relaxed today than in the grand prix and so I could put more pressure on him without too much risk,” said Cathrine, who is just 25.

The top 15 riders from the special go forward to tomorrow’s freestyle, which begins at 13.30 BST.

Germany look set to take gold at the European Dressage Championships in Gothenburg, with just the final rider for each nation still to ride.

Britain’s hopes in the first half of today’s grand prix action lay with Spencer Wilton and Supernova II, who produced some top-class work, but with costly mistakes in the double-marked pirouettes and canter zigzag. They begun their test trending on over 76%, but finished on a score of 72.08%. Spencer currently sits 10^th, just behind Emile Faurie and Lollipop 126.

“I was actually pleased because, apart from the mistakes, he did everything quite nicely and I could feel him growing in confidence out there,” said Spencer, who made his championship debut with ‘Neville’ in Rio last year. “But he’s always thinking about where the exit is and the wobble in the zigzag and mistake in the pirouettes was due to him thinking about the way out behind him.”

German dominance

Meanwhile, Germany’s Sonke Rothenberger has moved to the top of the leaderboard, ahead of his teammates Helen Langehanenberg and Dorothee Schneider in second and third. Sonke and the 10-year-old Cosmo looked set to break the 80% barrier, until a mistake in the two-tempis. He finished on a score of 78.34%, tightening Germany’s stranglehold on the title.

“He presents himself really well in a big arena like that, so he shines even more,” said the tall German of the KWPN gelding. “It was a pity we had mistakes as he normally scores the most marks for his canter, but hopefully we have done enough for the team.”

With one rider left to compete for each team, Germany are way out ahead at the top of the leaderboard, with Isabell Werth still to ride. Sweden sit second, with Denmark third and The Netherlands occupy fourth. Carl Hester will provide the third score for Britain when he and Nip Tuck take to the arena at 20.03 BST.
