Owned by the same family for nearly 100 years, a mini-estate located in Somerset has been put on the market.

It is something of a marvel – in 2012 and 2013 the owners were asked to host series three and four of The Great British Bake Off, which was filmed on the lawn.

Harptree Court is situated in the village of East Harptree in the beautiful Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

BSPS Area 13B is the showing society to get signed up to if you fancy hitting the show ring this summer.

Head out huting with either the Devon and Somerset staghounds or the West Somerset Vale Hunt.

Racing is available at Taunton (40 miles) or Wincanton (23 miles).

The Stables Equine Practice is 11 miles away.

A £6m Exmoor estate with 893 acres, 9 bedroom house and stables….

An absolutely dreamy agricultural and moorland estate near the village of Simonsbath in Exmoor, Somerset is up for sale with a hefty price tag. Would you invest?

Rider ‘lucky to be alive’ after horse killed in road accident

A rider has said he is lucky to be alive after the horse he was riding died in a collision with a car in Bridgwater Somerset, earlier today.

Rider Barry Francis suffered a broken leg in the incident, which happened at 11.40am.

Five-year-old Arab cross cob, Cindy, died before the vet arrived on the scene.

Mr Francis told local newspaper The Bridgwater Mercury: “The car drove into the back of her and we were flung into the air — she came down on top of me.

“I am very lucky. If she had landed on my head, it would have been a different story.

“I can’t believe it has happened. I have been riding for 43 years and this is the first time anything like this has happened.

“It’s going to take me a long time to get back into the saddle again.”

Cindy’s owner Christina Barnett, of nearby Folletts Farm, told the paper: “She died in agony in the road.

“I have another horse called Shadow and he will be distraught.

“I had to watch her die as the blood drained from her mouth.”

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said no one has been arrested over the incident.

South Somerset riding guide launched

Somerset Tourism Partnership has launched a guide to riding holidays and hacking, featuring six rides across the south of the county, ranging from four to 19 miles.

The circular routes, the majority of which start and finish at horse friendly pubs, take in a variety of landscapes and the guide is available to download from www.visitsomerset.co.uk or as a hard copy booklet from tourist information centres in South Somerset.

The booklet also includes information on horse-friendly accommodation, like B&Bs, campsites and self-catering cottages that offer stables and grazing and other useful information, such as lists of equine suppliers and events, vets, farriers and riding schools.

David Mccubbin from the Somerset Tourism Partnership, said: “The aim of the guide is to take the hassle out of planning a horse riding holiday in Somerset.

“The guide includes all the information you would need to organise a weekend or a week riding in the county — from where to stay and where to park your horsebox, to detailed riding routes and of course great pubs where you can enjoy a well earned lunch.”

The routes are as follows:

Corton Denham Ridge Ride — short ride on enclosed tracks, open fields and quiet roads

Limington Level Loop — 13-mile level ride along bridleways and country roads

Neroche/Staple Fitzpaine Herepath — ride through Neroche Forest and surroundings

Poyntington Hill Ridge Ride — ride following tracks, fields and roads with stunning views

Wambrook Wander — 11-mile ride around picturesque village of Wambrook

Willows and Wetlands Ride — 19 miles along ancient droves, bridleways and quiet roads
