‘He seems to instinctively know’: top horse who brings light to ‘so many people’ honoured

A former top five-furlong sprinter who makes “everyone who comes into contact with him feel better” was voted the first winner of a new award in recognition of the effect he has on those around him.

Goldream, known as Remy, and racehorse retraining and rehoming organisation New Beginnings were announced as winners of the 2024 Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Community Impact Award on Wednesday (31 January).

“He must have met hundreds and hundreds of people and children. He just makes everybody who comes into contact with him feel better,” said Pam Atkinson of New Beginnings.

Pam’s husband Kevin, with whom she runs New Beginnings, added: “He goes into hospices and the pleasure that he gives to the people at the latter end of life is just phenomenal.

“He seems to instinctively know what to do and puts his nose on people’s faces, he’ll sniff people’s hands.

“To see somebody at the latter end of life smile, when they’ve got so much going on in their world, because a horse has touched them is just phenomenal. You can’t buy that.

“He gives so much pleasure to people. He’s unbelievable.”

Pam said that Remy “just knows” when someone “could do with a hug”, and that he also brings comfort to the staff in hospices.

“The doctors and the nurses at the hospices have a very difficult job. They come and stroke Remy and get some pleasure from that as well,” she said.

The two-time Group One winner, formerly trained by Robert Cowell, was nominated for the award by York racecourse, for which he is an ambassador. He also spends time visiting medium secure hospitals, as well as schools and met more than 1,200 young people and families in 24 hours during national racehorse week.

Kevin added: “For a five-furlong sprinter, who has been a pocket rocket, to go into a hospice and be with people who need that extra bit of attention – the way he does it is just phenomenal.

”He’s given so much to so many people in so many areas – not just on the racecourse, or the medium secure hospital or the hospice, or primary schools. It’s everything that he does, and he does it all gracefully and humbly. He is a true example of the versatility of the thoroughbred.”

‘A catalyst for good’: giving people a second chance through horses

Two friends who have both been through traumatic times have launched a new initiative to help give others a fresh start.

The Bridge of Hope (Project Racing) is a not-for-profit enterprise founded by Tory MP George Freeman and his childhood friend James Fellowes, with the aim of providing “renewed hope to those who have taken a tumble in life through a meaningful new career in horseracing”.

The launch marks the 60th anniversary of George’s father, Arthur Freeman’s, 1958 Grand National win on Mr What. It also tragically marks the 50th anniversary of the collapse of Arthur’s life from a combination of concussion, gambling, alcohol and mental health problems.

The Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust is the first major sponsor of the initiative and the MP thanked the trust for its “wonderful support”.

“It means a huge amount for a lot of reasons — but on a personal level it has a special meaning,” he said.

“Not only is Sir Peter one of the legends of the sport and the voice of my childhood, I have never forgotten the wreath and card that he sent for my late father’s tragically premature funeral. It was a beautiful wreath and said simply on the card in his writing ‘To one of the bravest of them all. Peter O’Sullevan’.

“As a 19-year-old struggling to make sense of the tragedy of it all, it made a huge impression on me. I have never forgotten it.”

George teamed up with James, who also went through a difficult time in life through a combination of “bad people, bad timing and bipolar disorder”, to set up the initiative.

“George and I wanted to turn these two deeply personal and traumatic experiences into a catalyst for good,” said James.

“We are piloting the Bridge of Hope (Project Racing) in the horse racing industry to help provide a second chance in life to many and at the same time address racing’s biggest issue — the chronic shortage in racing staff.

“We have several outstanding charities keen to partner with us, as well as the world’s finest racing schools primed to train our graduates when we fully go live in January.

“From a governance perspective, we are delighted to announce that we will operate as a distinct project under the auspices of a progressive new charity that promotes inclusive recruitment — The Resume Foundation.

“Finally, the last piece of the puzzle is finding the right long-term strategic partners. We are absolutely thrilled with the generous financial commitment from the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust and are interested in developing mutually beneficial partnerships with other organisations with a progressive social responsibility agenda and an inclusive recruitment model.”

Major UK show welcomes new title sponsor, plus other sponsorship news

TheraPlate UK has been revealed as the title sponsor of the 2018 Liverpool International Horse Show.

The company will also support the grand prix, which takes place as part of the New Year’s Eve finale at the CSI4* show.

TheraPlate is a platform that comes in a range of sizes and is designed to be stood on by horses, dogs and humans.

It uses a low-amplitude orbital motion to aid rehabilitation and sports conditioning, by causing muscles to rhythmically contract and release.

“Liverpool is still a relatively new show but in this our fourth year, having such a well-respected brand as our title sponsor continues to cement our reputation as a world class show,” said show director Nina Barbour.

“We attract many of the best riders in the world who are passionate about the wellbeing of their horses. I have trialled the TheraPlate on my own horses, and have been very impressed by the results. It’s great to have TheraPlate UK on board.”

The company will exhibit at the show and can also be found in the sponsors’ area, close to the stables, so riders can try the device.

The TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show and will take place from 28 to 31 December at Liverpool’s Echo Arena.

Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust

Voltaire Design

The saddle manufacturer is the new title sponsor for the under-25 British showjumping championship at Olympia.

The class, which will feature 24 invited riders, will be held as part of the morning performance on 21 December.

Matt Tarrant, general manager at Voltaire Design UK, said the company is “proud and privileged” to sponsor the class.

“Supporting this prestigious championship helps to provide a unique opportunity to enable Britain’s future elite showjumpers to showcase their talent in the UK’s leading international arena,” he added.

Olympia, the London International Horse Show, runs from 17 to 23 December.

TopSpec

The feed company has signed a sponsorship deal with top German eventer Julia Krajewski.

“I am delighted to have secured sponsorship from TopSpec and am very much looking forward to promoting the brand throughout Europe,” said Julia.

“I hope to compete in the UK as much as work and training allows, the events are superb and it will be good to support TopSpec on those visits.”

TopSpec’s Katy Mickle added the company is “very pleased” Julia has joined its team of sponsored riders.

“She is very talented and also understands how horses should be fed and the results correct feeding can lead to,” added Ms Mickle.

Haygain

Eventer Georgie Spence has joined Haygain as one of their supported riders.

Haygain produces hay steamers, feeders and nebulisers, as well as rubber flooring, and Georgie has been using the company’s products for some time.

“Team Spence will be working closely with Haygain to ensure the horses stay happy and healthy,” said Georgie.

“We have been using Haygain for nearly two years now so it’s great to receive advice and support from a company we already value so highly.”

Dodson & Horrell

Showjumping legend John Whitaker has joined the feed company as an elite brand ambassador.

“It’s very important to make sure that all my horses are being given the correct nutrition to maintain their energy levels and keep them in top condition,” said John.

“I have chosen to feed Dodson & Horrell to my horses as they lead the way in equine nutrition.”

Gemma Schwarz, head of marketing at the company, said it is “fantastic” to have John join the team.

“We can’t wait to see him and his horses out competing over the coming months,” she said.

“We are committed to supporting all horses from leisure and amateur levels right through to these elite equine athletes and we use our expert knowledge to tailor diets to each horse’s specific needs.”

‘Racing art was his great love’: Sir Peter O’Sullevan’s art collection to go on display

Racing fans will be able to catch a glimpse into the life of legendary racing commentator Sir Peter O’Sullevan next month.

Artwork and memorabilia from the private collection of “the voice of racing” are set to go on display at a London gallery.

Sir Peter, who called more than 14,000 races over 50 years, was also a dedicated art collector.

The Osborne Studio Gallery in Belgravia, of which he was chairman for 17 years, will host a celebration of Sir Peter’s life from 9 March until 1 April.

As well as paintings and sculpture, it will feature photographs and items such as racing commentary cards and his script from his appearance on the Morecambe and Wise show.

“Racing art was his great love but, beyond that, he collected works from his travels, particularly from North Africa, seeking out artists in remote places, said gallery director Geoffrey Hughes in a personal memoir.

“Interestingly, subjects incorporating Pierrot are well represented in his collection.”

Some of the artwork will be on sale, with some of the funds going to the Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust.

The six charities supported by the trust are Blue Cross, The Brooke, Compassion in World Farming, World Horse Welfare, Racing Welfare and the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre.

Over the past 19 years, the trust has raised more than £4m for charity.

Sir Peter, who died peacefully at home in July at the age of 97, commentated on the Grand National 50 times for the BBC.

One of his most memorable moments was calling Red Rum home to his third Grand National victory in 1977.

“[Sir Peter’s] natural modesty forbade it, but every indication I had from our conversations in the latter part of his life suggested he would love others to share some of these memories,” added Mr Hughes.

“I also think that he would have appreciated how appropriate it is that the period of the exhibition includes the four days of the Cheltenham Festival.

“It is no secret that this was his favourite time of the year.”

Heythrop to host first meeting at new point-to-point course

Sir Peter O’Sullevan making ‘good recovery’ from mild stroke

Friends of the ‘Voice of Racing’, Sir Peter O’Sullevan, say he is making a good recovery after suffering a mild stroke.

Sir Peter, who is 95, commentated on 50 Grand Nationals for the BBC. He was taken ill on Sunday (24 March) and is being treated in Charing Cross Hospital, London.

Sir Peter’s close friend, Mike Dillon, from the bookmaker Ladbrokes, said he was “very lucid” and seemed “fine”.

Nigel Payne, chief executive of the Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust, said: “He is much better. It’s very encouraging.”

But Sir Peter will not be well enough to attend the 2013 National meeting (4-6 April).

He will be forever associated with the Grand National — and calling Red Rum home in his unprecedented three victories.

Sir Peter called the race for the last time in 1997. It was won by Lord Gyllene — two days after an IRA bomb threat caused the evacuation of Aintree.

He was knighted the same year, and set up the his charitable trust, which has raised more than £3m for animal welfare and racing charities.

Sir Peter has enjoyed good health into his tenth decade. He drove himself to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe meeting in Paris in October last year and braved freezing temperatures at Cheltenham earlier this month, for a book signing alongside former Flat jockey Lester Piggott.

Eight racing greats among Aintree “Legends”

Jenny Pitman and Sir Peter O’Sullevan are among eight Aintree racing greats to be named as “Grand National legends”.

The eight “legends” are to be honoured in an awards ceremony at Aintree racecourse on Grand National day, Saturday 10 April.

They will be inducted into the inaugural John Smith’s Grand National Legends Hall of Fame.

A short list was created by a panel of racing experts and then voted on by the public.

Five of the legends were selected by the public:

Ginger McCain and Red Rum — who won the race three times in the 1970s

Jenny Pitman — the first woman to train a national winner, Corbiere in 1983

Sir Peter O’Sullevan — who commentated on 50 Grand Nationals

John Buckingham and Foinavon — who won on their National debut in 1967 despite being 100-1 and famously avoiding a pile-up at the 23rd fence

Manifesto — who ran in the national eight times in the late 1800s, winning twice, finishing third three times and fourth once

Three were chosen by a racing panel:

Edward Topham — whose who’s family dynasty led Aintree for 125 years

Captain Martin Becher — who famously fell into the brook

George Stevens — the jockey who won five times between 1856 and 1870.

Aintree’s managing director Julian Thick said: “The John Smith’s Grand National always seems to produce a great story and we have been delighted by the public response to this vote.

“We also felt it was important to recognise the contributions made in the very early days of the race, with Captain Becher and Edward Topham playing a huge part in creating the race we know today and George Stevens’ record as a jockey unlikely to be surpassed. We now look forward to celebrating these first inductees to Aintree on John Smith’s Grand National Day.”
