International rider Carmen Edwards shares his thoughts on the handling of the recent tack rule changes by British Showjumping, buying horses at auction and whether an app could solve some of the issues when moving horses to and from Europe

If there’s one thing the recent chaos over tack rule changes has shown, it’s that British Showjumping (BS) needs to communicate better.

It’s a difficult task trying to create rules for a membership that encompasses everybody from 70cm riders to those jumping grands prix, but if our governing body could be a bit more talkative, we could work together to improve the sport.

I can’t see how these new guidelines improve the sport in any way. Nobody knows who is making up these rules, on what evidence, or why.

The use of several bits, including gags, combination bits and hackamores, has been impacted but it is hard to see the logic behind the decision. Some rules make sense – I understand the banning of bit clips, in case they break – but others are mystifying.

BS has a paying membership but seems to be dictating what happens without consultation. You can never please everybody, but the organisation needs to be more democratic.

At the moment, rules are changed with no apparent consideration for their impact and competitors are given no time to prepare. Should we be going straight to banning tack, or should we take a different approach and have stronger measures for reporting misuse?

Breeding for success

I’m currently out in Spain on my favourite tour at Oliva Nova. It’s perfect for bringing on the young horses and it’s a shame we can’t replicate it at home. Even if you don’t make a sale here, you can come home with videos from lots of different arenas that you can send on to potential buyers, and show a horse’s progress.

Since we left the EU, there are fewer continental buyers sourcing horses from the UK. This is despite the fact our breeding has improved greatly in recent years, helped by advancements like intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Twemlows do a great job, also offering semen from some very nice stallions, and they’ve recently started sponsoring the British Performance Horse (BPH) auction, run by James Wilson, Danny Dunne and Jake Saywell. Twemlows foal and look after hundreds of horses, so it should be an exciting collaboration for British breeding.

Auctions can be very expensive but BPH offers some value-for-money options for horses to bring on and produce. We have had a couple of really nice horses from there.

Historically, auctions haven’t always worked in the UK – we lost Brightwells, and while the Billy Stud auctions have been a success, the horses are from the one breeding programme. I like that BPH is overseen by James, Danny and Jake together, as three heads are better than one.

It would be fantastic if BPH can promote British breeding, and aim for 90% of their catalogue to be bred here.

An app to solve travel woes?

In my last column, I spoke about the horse welfare issues stemming from delays at the ports. The more I’ve thought about it, the more I am convinced that an app is the way forward. If this takes off then I’d also like my share of the profits!

If we can have an app for the NHS, and if domestic pets can travel simply on passports, then why can’t our carnets, blood results and health paperwork all be stored digitally?

Even if using a “carnet” app required a restriction on travel time, say between 7am and 7pm, to make sure vets were present, it would be preferable to the current arrangement.

At the moment, once a trip is complete, all the paperwork goes in the bin, which can’t be great for the environment either.

Vets not having to drop health papers off will also save them time and us a call-out fee.

Progress with this has to start soon – the problems can’t be allowed to persist indefinitely.

Air jacket safety standards

The most recognised certification for equestrian air vests is NF S72-800:2022, the only official standard created specifically for horse riding airbags. It covers inflation time, impact protection, coverage (neck, spine, chest, pelvis), and reliability. If a vest meets this, it’s been through rigorous, equestrian-focused testing.

You may also see this standard referred to as CE NF S72-800:2022 — the “CE” marking indicates that the product complies with European Union safety directives, while NF S72-800:2022 is the specific airbag testing protocol within that framework. In short: if you see either, it means the vest has passed the most up-to-date and relevant air vest safety testing for equestrian use.

Some vests are also tested to EN 1621-4 (for motorcycle airbags) or EN 1621-2 (for back protectors). These aren’t riding-specific but still confirm a high level of impact absorption, particularly for the spine and torso.

You may also see references to EN 13158:2009, the standard for traditional equestrian body protectors, not air vests. While air jackets don’t typically meet this standard, some brands use it for comparison to show their vest offers similar or better protection.

Lastly, SATRA M38 is a respected test protocol used to assess air vest performance. It’s not an official standard, but it’s run by SATRA – a leading independent testing lab – and is often used to evaluate how well an air jacket reduces impact in simulated riding falls.

Do equestrian airbag vests work?

Yes, when used correctly, the best air jackets are highly effective at reducing the risk and severity of injury during a fall.

They’re designed to inflate in milliseconds when triggered, cushioning vital areas such as the neck, spine, chest, and pelvis. Independent testing has shown that air vests can significantly reduce impact forces, especially to the chest and back – areas commonly injured in riding accidents.

While no vest can prevent all injuries, air jackets are a proven way to add an extra layer of protection for riders across all disciplines.

Are air jackets worth it?

For many riders, yes, the best air jackets are well worth the investment. They offer rapid, targeted protection in the event of a fall, inflating in milliseconds to help reduce the impact on key areas like the spine, chest and pelvis.

While they can be pricey, especially compared to traditional body protectors, many riders value the added peace of mind and freedom of movement they provide. Whether you’re schooling, hacking or competing, an air jacket adds an extra layer of safety that could make a big difference in a serious fall.

Do I need to get an air jacket fitted?

Yes, a proper fit is important to ensure your air jacket works as intended. Ideally get one fitted at your local saddlery and ask them for a demo on how it works too. Most brands offer size guides based on height and chest measurements, but it’s worth trying on different models if possible, especially if you plan to wear it over a body protector or under a show jacket.

British safety brand Racesafe has launched its first lightweight, slimline inflating gilet – the VeloAir air jacket.

“Protection shouldn’t be something you constantly notice – it should simply be there when it’s needed,” said Racesafe managing director James How. “We’ve gone to great lengths to develop an air jacket that meets the Racesafe standard that delivers confidence without compromising comfort, movement or style.”

The VeloAir meets the safety standard for equestrian airbags (NF S72-800:2022) and promises rapid inflation (in 0.095 seconds).

The bespoke airbag pattern has been designed to help maintain a slim, unobtrusive silhouette and a lighter more streamlined fit, while maintaining maximal impact absorption.

Racesafe VeloAir

Showjumper James Smith credits a bridle bought in 1986 for helping him win the winter grand prix at Aintree International Equestrian Centre.

The 33-year-old rider had been struggling to find a bridle that suited 14-year-old stallion Tayvale Hunky Dory, but showjumper-turned-coach Alan Fazakerley stepped in to help at last weekend’s Winter Classic II show (22-25 January).

“We’ve been messing around with Hunky Dory’s bridle and Alan had a hackamore in his car that he bought in 1986,” explained James of the four-decades-old tack, made before he was even born.

“We’d not been able to get one to sit right and he set this one up differently and Hunky Dory was riding much better in it.”

Grand prix victory

James Smith ended up winning the grand prix with the prolific British-bred son of Balou Du Rouet, also finishing second with nine-year-old mare Astrade Z, with whom he’d won the previous winter grand prix at Kelsall Hill a fortnight earlier.

“The mare is naturally quite fast, so I didn’t do anything too mad on her, and when I went in on the stallion I basically did the same route, but took one less stride to the last, which is what made the difference,” said James, who came from final draw with Tayvale Hunky Dory.

“The line to the double was difficult, you had to come round the last fence and it gave you a chance not to be square. I ended up with a good shot to it, you were turning back towards people, which could back them off a bit.”

James’s winning streak at Aintree also incorporated the SEIB winter novice championship qualifier with Dan IV and a 1.30m open riding the 10-year-old Dominican 2000 Z.

What’s the difference between a GP and a jump saddle?

A GP (general purpose) saddle is designed for riders who enjoy doing a bit of everything. They typically have a fairly deep seat and short flaps, which offers balance and a good range of movement for you and your horse. If you’re shopping for rider safety gear, you might have come across two similar-sounding options: body protector and back protector. While they might seem quite similar at first glance, they’re designed for different purposes. So, what’s the difference, and which one do you actually need?

Here’s everything you need to know to make the right choice for your riding when it comes to choosing between the best body protectors and best back protectors.

Body protector vs back protector: What’s the difference?

A body protector is the more robust of the two. Designed to safeguard your entire torso, it covers your back, chest, ribs and internal organs in the event of a fall or kick. These padded vests are usually made from layers of shock-absorbing foam, and their design varies from flexible and lightweight to more rigid depending on the level of protection.

A back protector, by contrast, does exactly what it says – it protects your spine and lower back, and nothing more. These are generally thinner, lighter and more comfortable, but don’t offer the same level of overall coverage. They’re ideal for riders who want a bit of extra peace of mind during flatter work or hacking, but they’re not designed for high-risk disciplines.

Which should you wear – and when?

The simple answer is: it depends on what you’re doing.

Body protectors are best suited to riskier activities such as:

• Cross-country (and are mandatory in British Eventing for the cross-country phase, and over solid fences in arena eventing)
• Jumping young or unpredictable horses
• Backing horses
• Schooling in more unpredictable environments

From 1 January 2024, most major governing bodies will only accept body protectors that meet the latest BETA Level 3 (2018) standard.

You can spot BETA Level 3 (2018) approved body protectors by their blue label. If your sport’s governing body – such as The Pony Club, British Eventing, British Riding Clubs, or BSPS – requires a body protector, this is the version you’ll need.

Body protectors with green, orange, or the older purple (2009) labels aren’t accepted by most governing bodies. While you can still wear them for unaffiliated riding or in disciplines like British Dressage or British Showjumping – where body protectors are optional – it’s recommended to replace them every three to five years.

For full peace of mind, the BETA Level 3 (2018) body protector standard offers the highest level of protection currently available. Back protectors are a good choice for:

• Hacking
• Schooling on the flat
• Riders who don’t like the feel of a full-body protector but still want a bit of spinal protection

Next, think about fit. A well-fitted protector – whether full body or back-only – should feel snug but not restrictive. It shouldn’t shift or ride up when you’re in the saddle. Many tack shops offer professional fitting services, and it’s worth taking advantage of this: a poorly fitted protector can’t do its job properly.

Comfort matters, too. Try mounting and moving around while trying it on – can you lift your arms, sit comfortably, and would you be able to dismount easily? If not, try a different size or model. Can I wear dark breeches for competition?

Can I wear dark breeches in competition?

Wearing dark breeches is permitted in some cases, as some competition bodies have updated their rules in recent years. These changes have included the relaxation of dress code. Some bodies now allow black and navy breeches in competition, while others now accept coloured jackets, or those with embellishments such as diamanté.

Following rule changes in the US, British Riding Clubs (BRC) introduced black and navy breeches into their dress code in late 2022. British Dressage (BD) updated their 2024 handbook to say ‘Breeches or jodhpurs should predominantly be of a solid, single colour. Dark-coloured contrast seats are permitted. Stripes or bold patterned breeches or jodhpurs are not allowed.’

Eventing Ireland (EI) and British Eventing (BE) also permit the wearing of dark and navy breeches in all three phases. This rule applies to national and training competitions.

Full-seat vs knee-patch breeches

Full-seat breeches tend to be favoured by riders who hack or do dressage as they are great for helping you stay secure in the saddle by promoting stillness from your seat down. For this reason, they can be a little more restrictive and can make it harder to adjust your position. Knee-patch breeches only have grip at the knee – this offers less security, but makes it easier to come out of the saddle and adopt the two-point position if you’re jumping. Traditionally the seat or patches were suede, but more recently variations of silicone grip have become more popular.

Choosing between the two styles is really down to personal preference but luckily there are plenty of design options to suit. Obviously you want to look and feel your best when out competing, so style and fit are also key to finding the best pair of competition breeches for you.

Whether you’re thinking about entering your first showjumping event or you’ve just affiliated with British Showjumping, one of your first questions will be what to wear. There are strict rules on dress code in affiliated competitions, but for unaffiliated shows, the guidelines tend to be less stringent.

What to wear for showjumping

Compared to dress codes for eventing and what you should wear for dressage, the guidelines for showjumping are simpler as there’s no difference between the levels. In short, you’ll need the following items, but we’ve got lots more information on the specific rules below:

• riding hat – this must comply with the correct safety standards. (See our guide to the best riding hats)
• riding boots – long boots, in black, brown or navy, or short boots in the same colours with matching leather gaiters. (See our guides to the best long boots and best jodhpur boots)
• breeches – must be white, pale yellow, beige, grey, fawn, navy or black in colour. (See our guide to the best competition breeches)
• show jacket – both traditional-style tailored jackets and new-styled jackets are permitted. (See our guides to the best show jackets and best tweed jackets)
• show shirt – long- or short-sleeved with a white collar. (See our guide to the best show shirts)
• stock or tie – if you don’t have a high white collar, you’ll need to wear either a stock or tie (stocks are more common and tradition suggests to wear a white stock with black/navy jacket but coloured with tweed)

Other important tips

• Long hair should be tidy and secured appropriately
• Competitors are advised to remove jewellery

What to wear at an unaffiliated showjumping competition

You won’t go wrong if you adhere to the affiliated rulebook, as described below. However, the dress code tends to be more lenient at local unaffiliated shows. For example, adults will often be permitted to wear jodhpur boots with half chaps rather than a traditional long riding boot.

Whatever the level of show, you’ll want to be smartly turned out in jacket, light-coloured jodhpurs/breeches and stock or tie if you don’t have a shirt with a high white collar. If you want to wear something different, contact the show secretary to check that it is permitted.

One item which is essential whatever the code, is protective headgear to the appropriate safety standard:

• British: All PAS (2011), VG1 – provided they are BSI Kitemarked.
• European: VG1 – provided they are BSI Kitemarked.
• American: all SEI ASTM F1163 04a onwards and SNELL E2016.
• Australian and New Zealand: AS/NZS 3838 2006 onwards.

What to wear for affiliated showjumping competitions

Competitors must be dressed in correct riding clothes, including jackets, whenever they enter the arena.

Jackets

• Competitors may wear traditional-style tailored jackets, including hacking jackets, or new-styled jackets, with the exception of British team colours (dark blue with red collar and white piping, Union Flag on the breast pocket area).

New style jackets are subject to various regulations:

• – they must be fully zipped up in competition.
• – up to three sponsor logos can appear on the right sleeve, all three contained within 6x14cm, and one logo on the breast pocket (3x4cm)
• – riders’ names may appear on the back of the jacket in upper and lower case letters, using the type face Cosmos Light or Arial, with letters 4cm in height.
• Members of the armed forces or police force may wear their uniforms.
• In hot weather, riders may be allowed to compete without jackets at the judges’ discretion, wearing shirts with either long or short sleeves, and ties firmly secured.

Shirts

• May have short or long sleeves, and must be done up properly
• Shirts must have white collars, and long sleeves must have white cuffs
• To be worn with ties or hunting stocks
• Ladies may wear shirts with high white collars, and without a tie or stock
• Coloured ties or stocks may be worn with hacking jackets
• Junior members who are also Pony Club members may wear the Pony Club tie regardless of jacket colour

Breeches/jodhpurs

• Must be white, pale yellow, beige, grey, fawn, navy or black in colour

Boots

• Traditional style riding boots, either long or short, but short boots must be worn with leather gaiters.

Permitted colours are:

• – Plain black, or black with mahogany or patent tops.
• – Plain brown, or brown with patent tops.
• – Plain navy, or navy with mahogany or patent tops.
• For juniors, traditional style leather jodhpur boots in plain black, brown or navy may be worn with leather gaiters cut in the traditional riding boot style, or half chaps.

Gloves

• Optional

Body protectors

• Optional, with no specific standard required
• Air jackets can be worn without a body protector

Not permitted

• Polo necks
• Chaps
• Half chaps, except for junior riders (as detailed above).
• Video recording or camera equipment is not permitted to be worn anywhere on the horse/pony or rider when mounted anywhere on the showground.

Hats

• Protective headgear must be worn at all times when riding, with the harness securely fastened.

Hats must meet one of the following standards:

• – British: All PAS 015 (2011), VG1 – provided they are BSI Kitemarked.
• – European: VG1 – provided they are BSI Kitemarked.
• – American: all SEI ASTM F1163 2004a onwards and SNELL E2016.
• – Australian and New Zealand: AS/NZS 3838 2006 onwards.

Spurs

• No spurs of excessively severe design
• Only dummy, rollerball, impulse, rowelled, hammerhead or Prince of Wales spurs are permitted
• Rowelled spurs if worn, must have smooth rowels, with a diameter of no less than 1cm and no greater than 2cm, with a minimum width of 1.8mm. The rowels must sit in the vertical plane; horizontal rowels are not allowed. Rowels are not permitted for ponies
• No spurs with interchangeable/removable shanks
• No spurs necks set on the inside of the heel
• No spurs with roughened or cutting edges
• No serrated spurs
• Overall length of spur should not exceed 4cm (measured from back of boot to end of spur). For ponies, this should not exceed 2.5cm
• Spurs should be of smooth material (metal or plastic)
• Shank must be blunt and point only towards the rear
• Only one pair of spurs should be worn, traditionally fitted with the curve of the neck of the spur pointing downwards
• For pony classes, spurs with necks must not exceed 2cms long, and they are not to be pointed, sharp or rowelled

Whips/padded batons

In December 2024, Horse & Hound reported changes to the use of padded batons, which replaced whips in British Showjumping competitions five years ago. You can read about the new British showjumping whip rules, which came into force on 1 January 2025, here.

In affiliated showjumping, competitors at all levels may carry a padded baton:

• Between 45cm and 70cm in length with a shaft of minimum 1cm diameter and not exceeding 160g
• That has a contact area (the part of the padded baton that will or has the potential to contact the horse) two fifths of the padded baton’s overall length
• With a pad covering the contact area that is smooth, with no protrusion or raised surface, wording, advertising or personalisation. The pad must be made from shock-absorbing material that gives a compression factor of at least 6mm and there must be no binding within 17cm of the end of the pad

Global superstars Henrik von Eckermann and the brilliant King Edward continue to take the showjumping world by storm, earlier this year clinching back-to-back World Cup Final titles – the first time for 25 years that a horse has achieved the feat – and this week representing Sweden at the Paris 2024 Olympic showjumping.

But while the all-conquering duo effortlessly scale the greatest heights in the ring, the 14-year-old Belgium-bred gelding (Edward 28 x Feo) is no easy ride and the Swedish rider describes King Edward as “very sensitive”, particularly around his face. Henrik has also revealed that taking off the chestnut’s shoes was a “complete game changer”.

The small but mighty King Edward, who was bred by Wim Impens and has carried Henrik von Eckermann to Olympic and World Championship glory, has been seen in an assortment of different bridles in recent years to help with the gelding’s sensitivity – in Herning there was no throatlash (pictured below), a nose net comes in to use at times, and at both the World Cup Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and here in Paris, they have even dispensed with his browband.

So H&H caught up with the reigning world number one Henrik von Eckermann to find out more about the unusual tack he’s been using with multi-winning King Edward.

“We tried the nose net because he is extremely sensitive, he doesn’t like anything on his face,” reveals Henrik, 42. “It’s the same with the browband, we’ve tried going without one for a few months because he doesn’t need it and so it’s less on his face.”

The Swedish showjumper says about their partnership: “It doesn’t help to get nervous or stressed, because the horse feels everything and King Edward is a very, very sensitive horse. We’ve been together so long and know each other so well that I have the biggest confidence in him. He will never disappoint me. It is my main goal to keep my horses happy and motivated and King Edward is definitely a very special horse.”

Equally, King Edward, who is looked after by groom Louise Barraud, clearly has absolute belief in his rider, and we are privileged to be able to watch their relentless clear round performances in this incredible era for the sport.

“He has jumped so many clear rounds and done so many good things – it’s a privilege to ride him,” says Henrik von Eckermann, who also describes him as “such a sweet horse”.

As he sums up, “Edward has the capability from I don’t know where – it’s beyond something else. He can jump a big fence without any effort. No other horse I’ve ever sat on has given me that feeling.”

The best tendon boots for horses provide the backs of your horse’s forelegs with support and protection from strikes and blows that are caused by clashing opposing legs and hind hooves. This part of your horse’s leg is particularly vulnerable to injury as the majority of the tendons and ligaments run down the back of the leg.

As they’re made with shockproof materials, tendon boots are usually fairly rigid but they should not affect your horse’s ability to flex his joints – and it’s helpful if they’re lightweight, too. The best technical stirrups are a must-have tack accessory and can make a real difference to your time in the saddle. The Freejump Soft’Up Pro Plus stirrups are designed with both safety and comfort in mind. The inner branch is fixed, while the outer open branch can bend open to easily release your foot in the event of a fall. They also offer a high degree of shock absorption – the stirrups flex at the lower inside bend of the stirrups, which absorbs shock travelling into riders ankles, knees and hips in addition to the shock travelling across the horses back.

The main difference from the Soft’Up Classics is the position of the stirrup eye, which is on a 45° angle to provide extra comfort and allow riders to easily find a lost stirrup. The Pro+ tread is also 27% larger – this extra size combined with the raised metal studs across each footplate provides extra grip and stability.

They’re available in a wide range of colours and this elastomer soleplate is what offers the shock absorption. They have a wide tread and a slight tilt, which helps reduce the tension in your joints.

Acavallo Opera Stirrups

The way these Acavallo stirrups are suspended allows these lightweight stirrups to hang with optimal balance, angle and flexibility. The laser-cut stainless steel foot plate is supported by twin moulded side sections. Each side of the stirrup works independently, which spreads the load and helps to absorb shock.

The Opera stirrup is a completely new concept in riding because of its special patented loop construction, which allows the stirrup to adhere to the saddle flap, avoiding friction between the leg and the stirrup, for a more correct, comfortable and secure ride. The large stirrup pad in stainless steel gives riders better grip and relieves tension in the hips, knees, ankles and calves.

What are the benefits of technical stirrups?

When you compare the best technical stirrups that are currently available with the simple, traditional steel irons, it’s easy to see how far we’ve come. Technical stirrups are more shock-absorbing, which is great news for our joints as they’re some of the best stirrups for knee pain or ankle pain. They also have better grip, which helps us retain our stirrups, and are ergonomically designed. The angles used in technical stirrups not only help you regain a lost stirrup more easily, but some designs help you keep your heels down, too.

The safety aspect is also important – many technical stirrups are now also shaped to allow your foot to slide out more easily in the event of a fall, while others have a breakaway arm.

Technical stirrups for dressage vs jumping

While stirrups can be used in any discipline (assuming they comply with the rules if you’re competing), some designs are made with particular disciplines in mind. By investing in a quality training stirrup that guides you into the right position, you can begin to develop improved feel, coordination and technique.

What size stirrups do I need?

Not all stirrups come in a range of sizes, but where they do you should choose a pair that are one inch wider than the width of your boot at the ball of your foot. This gives you half an inch of space each side once your foot is in place. Some stirrup sizes are determined by weight – particularly when it comes to safety stirrups. While you might have feet small enough to fit junior stirrups, for example, you need to check the rider weight limits for activating the safety mechanism.

The best half pads for horses can be used for a variety of reasons. Some are added beneath correctly fitting saddles to add an extra layer of shock absorption and aid stability, while others can be added to account for changes in the horse’s shape and help to temporarily improve saddle fit. This is particularly useful when horses are developing or changing shape due to weight, fitness or age, and many of these have shims, which you can add and remove as necessary.

Some half pads are designed to be used alone, but most can also be used with alongside one of the best saddle pads – some should be used underneath and against your horse’s back, while others should be used between the saddlecloth and saddle. There are many types of girth and the best stud girths will protect your horse’s girth area additional protection when he’s got studs in for additional grip while jumping. For this reason it is important that the middle section or kicking plate is of a suitable size, while added padding increases pressure distribution and comfort.

This bit connector is an interesting alternative to traditional pelham roundings, commonly used to prevent a rider having to cope with two reins. The difference here is that it allows the rider to adjust the amount of pressure to the upper and lower part of the pelham, influencing the amount of curb action felt by the horse, while allowing the rider to use a single rein.

How can they help?

Walsh Harness & Saddlery is among those manufacturing these bit connectors. The company describes this piece of tack as “ideal for getting the response necessary from a two-rein bit without the hassle of holding two reins”.

They are similar in design to show couplings, but each leather connector has a few holes and a buckle so that you can adjust the amount of action you want on the curb. For example, some people might tighten the bottom buckle and loosen the top for more leverage on a pelham, or you can leave them on both the same holes for equal pressure between the snaffle and curb.

Ema Odlin-Baxter, senior bitting advisor at The Horse Bit Shop, which supplies these connectors in the UK, explains why they are growing in popularity.

“Traditional leather roundings don’t provide a fixed position for the rein, which means they aren’t very accurate when it comes to how much curb action you would like on a pelham,” she says. “Bit connectors are more precise thanks to the double buckle system which means you can play with the strength of the curb action you require, gaining more accurate results with pressure down the rein.”

Scott Brash uses these roundings, as does event rider Pixie Thomas. She said: “They offer finer tuning than standard roundings as you can adjust how much you’re using the snaffle vs. curb action. I didn’t have an issue with rein position and they are an ideal alternative to going cross-country with two reins.”

Some riders prefer another style of rounding, made of leather and nylon, which is much shorter. These are lightweight, easy to attach and designed to offer a closer, clearer contact.
