She joined the H&H editorial team in 2018, following four years working for other national equestrian titles, including Horse&Rider and PONY magazines. Her previous roles at Horse & Hound include Sub Editor, Products Editor and Senior Content Editor, and she has also been Editor of H&H’s sister site, PetsRadar.

Georgia is now responsible for curating all the features and products-related content on the website. She also manages all the ecommerce opportunities that allow us to give you easy access to the best products at the best prices. Georgia has also writes features covering a wide range of topics in which she offers advice for horse owners and provides essential information for spectators.

Georgia also writes in-depth reviews and buying guides to help you make the best purchases. If a company is launching a new product, she is one of the first people to hear about it and get her hands on it. She has a great knowledge of a wide range of equestrian brands and their ever-evolving product lines, and has been working with them closely since she first began working in equestrian media in 2015.

Not born into an equestrian family, Georgia joined a local children’s charity that taught members how to ride and care for the ponies if they weren’t in a position to have lessons or own their own. She stayed part of the family here, teaching everything she learnt to the younger members while in her teens, until she went to Writtle College (now called ARU Writtle) to study for a degree in equine sports therapy. She graduated with a first class in 2013 and it was during her studies that she realised she wanted to work in equestrian media.

She now owns a Norwegian Fjord gelding who keeps her very busy outside of work, but enjoys assisting with product testing. “Utah” is a yard favourite and is treated like a king by Georgia’s fellow liveries.
</dc:description>

While coloured show jackets have been allowed in British Dressage competitions since the end of 2013, traditional black and navy versions of the best show jackets are still the most commonly seen.

So when Charlotte Dujardin competed at the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships in a pink show jacket, despite not being the only one, it certainly got people talking.

Charlotte’s jacket is the super-smart Flying Changes Charlotte ladies’ short jacket, which retails at a cool £549. It’s not currently available in many sizes off the peg, but you can order a customised option instead.

Charlotte said: “It’s nice to be different isn’t it! My daughter loves pink. When I went to have my new coat fitted, Isabella said ‘pink one, Mummy!’ So here I am in pink! On a black stallion I think it looks cool and why not be different and make it fun and exciting!”

A coloured show jacket is a great way to show your personality and feel good in the saddle. If you’ve been inspired by the pink, but this jacket is out of your budget, I’ve rounded up some other options for you to consider.

Pink show jackets: get A keen member of the Lancaster & District branch of the Pony Club, he learnt to ride on a succession of hand-me-down ponies before persuading his parents to buy him his own horse – a wholly unsuitable but much-loved Welsh section C.

Oscar went on to study equine science at Myerscough College and, after deciding jumping wasn’t his strong suit, turned to dressage. Inspired by the London 2012 Olympics, he later spent four years working for leading trainer Emile Faurie. During that time, he competed at the 2015 National Dressage Championships and travelled with the yard to CDIs at Aachen, Vidauban, Saumur and Achleiten.

He also holds a master’s degree in Literature from York St John University (2021), combining his equestrian background with a passion for writing about the sport.

He regularly reports on elite dressage, breeding and welfare issues, as well as the science and policy shaping modern equestrian sport.

Oscar now lives in Cumbria with his two boisterous spaniels, Miffy and Dougal, and is interested in making equestrian sport more inclusive and accessible.
</dc:description>

You want something that feels good to ride in, moves with you, and still looks smart in the ring. Prioritise lightweight, technical fabrics with stretch, especially if you’re competing in warmer weather or jumping multiple rounds.

Breathability, moisture-wicking, and handy details like well-placed vents make a real difference on a long day. And don’t forget to double-check the style rules for your discipline before you buy.

How did we pick the best men’s jackets in this guide?

We’ve pulled together a mix of hands-on experience, expert advice and rider reviews to create this shortlist. We’ve covered a range of price points and styles, but always with performance, comfort and value in mind.

Technical fabrics, smart tailoring and providing a range of jackets that cover several disciplines were top priorities.

What colours are allowed for men’s show jackets?

It depends on your discipline. In dressage, any single-colour jacket, tailcoat or waistcoat is allowed, including subtle pinstripes, contrast piping, coloured collars or even discreet crystals. Tweed is fine too, as long as it’s subtle. Here’s a full guide on what to wear for showjumping.

Showing is stricter: tweed jackets are standard for working hunter and native classes, while hacks and riding horse sections call for a darker, formal jacket. Stick to muted tweeds and avoid anything too loud. But somehow, this doesn’t happen; the jacket looks as though it is made from a solid fabric, plus it’s smart, fitted and flattering.

First impressions are that this is a high quality product; it’s well made, fits as would be expected (an XS fitted a size 8) and shows real attention to detail with the trimmings, such as the AA lapel badge, the collar design and the Italian colours on one pocket edge.

It fastens with a zip under the buttons, which I think helps the fitted appearance, and is so comfortable you (cliché alert) hardly realise you’re wearing it.

I thought that I’d only be able to wear it in summer as I’m such a wuss with the cold, but a jumper (and another layer or two as needed) underneath didn’t spoil the fit and meant I could wear it all year round. The only condition it didn’t cope with was the torrential downpour I jumped in on one September day but then to be fair, the rain was so heavy I could barely see through it; little other than a tarpaulin would have coped!

I’d recommend this jacket to anyone. Compared to some others on the market, it’s reasonably priced, definitely fair for the quality, versatile, comfortable and all the rest of it. It washes well too; I did up the fastenings and removed the AA badge to do so, although neither was directed on the label, and it looks as good now as it did when I first got it. A winner.

Verdict

If you’re looking for a summer competition jacket — or even during the rest of the year — look no further.

In addition to this it is soft to touch and the fabric looks like it is good quality, meaning that the jacket looks more expensive than it is.

The jacket has a four-button front with a hidden zipper to prevent unsightly gapping and a double-vented back. I find this especially useful for showjumping classes as it allows for extra movement. The jacket also has an innovative interchangeable collar, which allows you to zip it off and replace it with a different coloured collar in a matter of seconds — perfect for those of us who like to mix up our look every now and again.

Verdict

Overall it is a versatile jacket, which is suitable for a variety of disciplines and is comfortable and flattering

It simply doesn’t fit. And it’s not just me. Various size 10s in the office tried it on, and it didn’t fit any of us.

I don’t think I’m an unusually framed size 10 (see my other jacket review to compare) but the arms of this jacket were far too long and they were so generously sized at the top that they were gathered and went baggy around my elbows/upper arms. The jacket was too tight across my chest (at a 34 B cup I’m not particularly well endowed!) which caused the lapels to sit up rather than being flat across my collar bones. It was also fractionally too long in the body when I was sat in the saddle – again not a problem I normally experience.

Most of the comments I received while wearing the jacket related to the unflattering fit, which did not encourage me to wear it again in public, so the remainder of the testing I undertook while riding at home.

On the plus side, I like the colour and although it wasn’t a good fit, the material does have some stretch in it, so it wasn’t uncomfortable to ride in. The three big bling buttons are a bit too ‘in your face’ for my liking, but that’s down to personal preference. I do like the EQM logo embroidered on the arm. The pockets are generously sized and the zips mean you can carry lorry keys/money/phone etc while riding without worrying them are going to fly out at an inopportune moment, which is useful.

The jacket material appears to have been produced with winter shows in mind as it has a lightweight fleece lining and it is warm to wear. It wouldn’t be an ideal choice for summer shows for that reason. It is machine washable and washes well.

Verdict

: this jacket has potential to be a real bargain, but the cut needs reconsidering if it is to fit a wider range of riders

While it’s described as navy, I’d say it’s closer to royal blue. It’s certainly a lot brighter than my navy jacket I use for dressage.

I really liked the fit of this jacket. It was flattering, without being restrictive and the length was fashionable without being so short that I felt was constantly flashing my backside at all and sundry. The arms were a good length and the stretch in the material made it very comfortable to wear.

I am fairly conservative in my choice of competition clothing and although I liked the light blue collar, I wasn’t totally convinced by the elbow patches. However, every time I’ve worn it to go showjumping I’ve received positive comments from others at the show, which has served to convince me that it’s ideal for its target audience.

The zip pockets serve to aid the slimline appearance, while also ensuring that your lorry keys/phone/cash remain where you put them! And the black and silver horsehead buttons are a further stylish touch.

My only complaint about this jacket is its breathability, or lack of it. Admittedly I have worn it showjumping on some of the warmest days of the summer, but every time I took the jacket off I felt wet across the top of my back/shoulders and my arms were clammy, although I didn’t feel like I was overheating while I was riding.

I’m not sure if the washing instructions label is missing from my jacket, but I couldn’t find one anywhere. So without any guidelines I washed the jacket on a 30-degree coloured cycle in my washing machine with my standard detergent. I was please and relieved when it came out looking like new.

Verdict

A stylish and modern showjumping jacket, but on warm summer days I'd rather jump in just my show shirt to avoid sweating

Each coat is bespoke and the turnaround from placing an order to receiving the jacket is six to eight weeks.

To find out more and to place an order, go to www.jacketsbytorty.co.uk

This news story was first published in Horse & Hound (14 April, 2011)

Stay in touch with all the news in the run-up to and throughout the major shows and events during 2026 and beyond with a Horse & Hound subscription. Subscribe today for all you need to know ahead of these major events, plus online reports on the action as it happens from our expert team of reporters and in-depth analysis in our special commemorative magazines.
