You might dream of a safari on horseback, or perhaps you have already been lucky enough to experience one. But what about the remarkable horses you ride once at your destination? How do the experts go about sourcing and training a horse for safari so they are able to cope with what’s required in their everyday lives?

Isabel Juby of African Horse Safaris, who provides horseback safaris in Africa, recently had a chat with Barney Bestelink from Okavango Horse Safaris to discuss the most effective ways to train horses to cope with the terrain and being surrounded by Africa’s Big Five.

How to train a young horse for safari holidays

Where do you source most of your safari horses?

Most of our operators either breed their own safari horses or collaborate closely with breeders in South Africa and Kenya. They maintain strong connections with farriers and equestrians who often suggest horses with backgrounds in racing, eventing, or polo.

What breed works best for riding in Africa?

When it comes to safari horses, the emphasis is on temperament, stamina and willingness, rather than breed. The herds predominantly feature thoroughbred, Namibian Warmblood, Arab, Friesian, boerperd, and appaloosas, along with unique crossbreeds.

How can you tell if a young horse will make a good safari horse?

When youngsters show a willingness to learn, follow the cues of the herd and bond well with the team, it’s easy to see their potential. Usually, the ones that are brave, inquisitive and a bit mischievous make the best safari horses.

What age do they start their training?

From a young age, foals are brushed and handled by the dedicated stable team. Gentle groundwork and long lining starts at around two-and-a-half years old. Backing and schooling with a dedicated rider begins at around three years old to build confidence and trust.

They go out on their first few safaris in a small group with calm and experienced horses. The horses learn from the rest of the herd, and when they realise the other horses are grazing contently with giraffe and elephants nearby, they follow suit. They are ridden by experienced guides, staff or volunteers for at least a year before graduating to carrying guests.

What sort of training is required to desensitise a horse to all they encounter on safari?

Desensitising safari horses requires less training than you would imagine, and is mostly done by the herd. Living in the wild, you’ll frequently find the horses peacefully grazing alongside zebra, wildebeest, and antelope. They also regularly see elephants and buffalo, who are common visitors to the camps.

Growing up in the bush, the horses develop remarkable sure-footedness. Brushing up against trees, stepping over rocks and having birds fly up underfoot become part of their daily lives. From the beginning, they’re accustomed to hearing loud noises like a helicopter buzzing overhead or a whip being cracked.

How do you match horses to riders?

Matching guests to horses requires a blend of science, art and a touch of luck. There is a wide range of horses suitable for everyone, from the competitive rider to those preferring a steady hack, and every effort is made to match the horse and rider.

The team meticulously reviews guests’ booking forms considering weight, height, riding experience and preferences. Sometimes it means reading between the lines, but they generally get it right.

A mounting list is drawn up with between two and five horses allocated per rider, with the final match made after they have met the guest. Gentle orientation rides allow guests to acclimatise to the new tack, riding style and terrain. Regular check-ins allow the guides to make adjustments and ensure guests have the best riding experience possible.

What do you do if a horse is nervous out on a ride?

Anxious horses are carefully paired with a relaxed and gentle rider. It’s important to be patient, encouraging them to be brave and rewarding them when they’ve stood their ground. Taking cues from more experienced companions, the horses are allowed to bond, exchange breaths, and graze together. They soon settle down, mirroring the nonchalant grazing of their experienced counterparts.

How do you handle riding in large groups?

Upon arrival, guests receive a thorough safety briefing. Guides cover expectations and safari etiquette, emphasising staying behind the lead guide, following hand signals, and keeping quiet during wildlife encounters. Groups are intentionally small, with a maximum of eight-12 riders, a lead guide and a backup rider.

Is it easy to spot a lead horse from an early age?

Yes and no – sometimes horses surprise you. The guides develop a strong relationship with their horses and it takes time to build up that level of trust. Lead horses need to be courageous, patient, independent and reliable. You might have quirky Thoroughbred who seems to be terrified of the bush become incredibly brave when paired with the right rider. Sometimes, the perfect horse doesn’t quite have the confidence to be out on the trail, but turns into the ideal breeding mare for the next generation of safari horses.

Most people have a “bucket list” of things they would like to experience at some point in life – and equestrians are likely to have a “horse bucket list”. Here’s Horse & Hound’s list of suggestions that we think you should consider including – some will be relatively easy to tick off, while others will take a bit of saving up to do. But all of them will be totally worth it when you get there – and even better if you can capture it on one of the best riding hat cameras!

Horse bucket list suggestions to consider

1) Gallop in the sea

Splashing in the surf, galloping along the sand – or even full-on swimming in the sea. Training on the beach was the making of Red Rum, and it’s a treat for any rider and horse.

If you have a horse you can take, here’s what you need to know before you go for a beach ride. If you don’t have a horse you can take, check out these horse experience days to see if there’s a beach riding venue near you.

2) Ride among giraffes in Africa

An African safari is the rider’s equivalent of swimming with dolphins. The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a wilderness paradise of lagoons, islands and forests with the best game viewing in Southern Africa. Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia and South Africa also offer great riding experiences. Here are some tips to help you choose the right safari for you.

3) Ride out for a racehorse trainer

Wangle an introduction and convince the trainer that, perched atop half a ton of galloping horse, you’ll be able to restrain its power. Be prepared for cold, early mornings – but nothing beats the feeling of having galloped three thoroughbreds by breakfast.

4) Fall off in a water jump

Perhaps not top of your list of priorities, but a rite of passage. Tackle them often enough and it will happen. Just try to ensure a photographer is there to capture the moment.

5) Ride side-saddle

Side-saddle riding has gained new interest since period dramas such as Downton Abbey. It’s elegant, skilled and – once the initial awkwardness is overcome – some riders believe it’s more comfortable than astride. Read this tips on how to ride side-saddle before you give it a go.

6) Jump a 5ft fence

Take your pick and pump up some pluck: a Chase-me-Charlie pole, a hedge out hunting or an Irish wall.

7) Go hunting in Ireland

Not for the faint-hearted – but if double banks, cavernous ditches and a totally gung-ho attitude is up your street, there are plenty of ways to fulfil your dream of hunting on the Emerald Isle. If you’re adding this to your horse bucket list, make sure you book an experienced hireling who will know the lie of the land, fill up your hip flask with some Dutch courage, and find out what people say about hunting in Ireland.

8) Drive a horse

In honour of the late Duke of Edinburgh, who took up driving after retiring from polo, this is one sport every horseman should try. The British Driving Society has a list of contacts for all qualified instructors in all areas of the UK, including those catering for the disabled. 9) Do tempi changes

One to tick off as and when you are ready rather than pushing for something outside your skill level. But if you are not yet up to training your horse to do them yourself, then you can book in a lesson with a dressage schoolmaster at various training centres around the country, although you will need to prove a certain level of riding ability.

10) Have riding boots made to measure

Although they don’t come cheap, nothing feels as good as slipping on a pair of made-to-measure riding boots. No rubbing, no awkward baggy gaps, and the feel of perfect unison with your horse. Here’s a selection of the best long leather riding boots, some of which are available in made-to-measure sizes.

11) Back a horse or pony

Not for the inexperienced horseman, but everyone who backed a horse has had a first time – just make sure you have someone experienced on hand to help and guide you. The joy of backing your own horse, developing mutual trust and going on to compete is immeasurable and definitely one for the horse bucket list.

12) Have a spin round the Golden Button

If you’re an equestrian adrenaline junkie then look no further than the three-mile race over Ledbury hunt country held in February. Anyone can enter – there’s just 22 natural obstacles between you and the finish line.

13) Lead a winner into the paddock

If you can’t afford the Tattersalls Sales, you could join a syndicate. Most racing stables run syndicates with an enormous variation in

numbers of owners and costs, or there are also racing clubs where you can pay an all-in fee. For instance Elite Racing Club has membership for £17 per month. You may not end up leading in a winner, but you’ll be able to visit the horse training and at the races and be privy to some special owner perks.

14) Be a stunt rider in a movie

“Real” stunt riders need a minimum of six skills (fighting, falling, riding/driving, agility/ strength, water, and miscellaneous – any

skill performed to elite standard). However, many riders have been in the right place at the right time and called up to film a riding scene because they look the part and know how to look authentic on a horse.

15) Ride at sunrise in Hyde Park

The Household Cavalry has a small pool of civilian riders who help exercise their horses, but a serving soldier needs to nominate you

to be added to the waiting list. Alternatively, there are a couple of riding stables on the edge of the park: Ross Nye and Hyde Park Stables, where you can pay for the pleasure. There is also a Civil Service Riding Club for those eligible, which uses Hyde Park.

16) Ride up the centre line at Horse of the Year Show

For showing riders, this is the pinnacle. Ride up the centre line in that hushed arena and you know you’ve made it.

17) Play polo

The feeling of (finally) being able to canter after that white ball and whack it is intensely satisfying, never mind the exhilaration of a ride-off. Check out some venues that offer polo lessons in this collection of horse experience days if you’re adding this to your horse bucket list.

18) Hear the roar at the start of Cheltenham

When the first race of the Cheltenham Festival begins, the crowd’s roar is enough to make your blood sizzle. There were no crowds last year, but hopes are high that this year we will again hear the roar as the tapes are raised for the Supreme Novices on 15 March. 19) See a horse being sold for a million

For astronomical prices, head to Newmarket or Kentucky. Records of some kind are smashed year by year, and the buzz of the sales ring is spellbinding.

20) Volunteer at a show

If you phone up any event organiser, chances are they’ll take your hand off. Surprisingly rewarding and for hardcore volunteers, the route to championships around the world. Here are five ways to volunteer in the horse world.

21) Ride at Badminton

An advanced eventer with five-star potential is going to cost you an arm and a leg, and then you’ve got to be able to ride it. However, the Voltaire Design Badminton Grassroots Championships brings together winners from BE90 and BE100 regional qualifiers from around

the country to contest for the championship. This year, Badminton takes place from 3–8 May – find out how to get tickets here. Failing that, or if you fancy the thrill of the chase, take a day out with the Beaufort hunt. You never know where the trail might lead you…

22) Watch the Grand National live

If you’ve never ventured up to Aintree, this is a must. This season, the Randox Grand National Festival takes place from 7–9 April, with the great race on Saturday, 9 April. Get more info at tickets at thejockeyclub.co.uk

23) Watch the Spanish Riding School

Under glittering chandeliers, the famous white Lipizzaner stallions perform the purest form of dressage in Vienna.

24) Get your photo in H&H

Either beat one of our Olympians, or be at the top of your level and send a completely brilliant photo to wow the picture editor.

25) Spend a day at the Calgary Stampede

“The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”, as it is billed, brings out the cowboy in everyone. Top-level rodeo riding, barrel racing and more. It takes place in Calgary each July (8–17 July 2022).

26) See a foal being born

Offer to do the last week of nightly vigil for a friend’s in-foal mare. Or, if you’re extremely lucky on a National Stud tour, you might see a live birth during the foaling season, but probably via a video link. A tour of the National Stud is part of this behind-the-scenes day at Newmarket.

27) Ride in a charity race

A number of charities, such as the British Horse Society (BHS), hold special races on allocated days, usually a one-mile Flat race. Riders usually have to source their own racehorse, raise a set amount of money and physically it’s no walk in the park, with riders facing a gruelling assessment and fitness test. Horse & Hound’s Gemma Redrup gave it a go in 2018 and blogged about the experience.

28) Watch the action on the frozen lake at St Moritz

With freezing temperatures and 1,800m above sea level, the Swiss venue of St Moritz is a dazzling setting for elite polo teams, racing and skijoring. White Turf runs on three Saturdays in February, featuring international horse racing, while the Snow Polo World Cup will take place on the lake 28–30 January. Horse & Hound went behind the scenes at St Moritz to check it out.

29) Herd cattle across the plains of Montana

Unless you have a long-lost cowboy uncle, you’ll need to join a trip or work on a ranch. It’s not a cheap riding holiday, but it’s an unmissable experience.

30) Ride a bucking bronco

Either head to the Wild West for the real thing (madness), or hire one for a party.

31) Try reining

Fancy embracing your inner cowboy/girl? Then why not give reining a go – from spins to sliding-stops, reining could offer you a completely new equestrian experience.

32) Give vaulting a go

If you’ve got a pair of leggings and some pumps to wear, you can try your hand at vaulting. You don’t need your own horse and new vaulters are welcomed into the fold. For more information visit the British Equestrian Vaulting website or book yourself onto a vaulting and trick riding session.

33) Ride a heavy horse

Are you a thoroughbred snob? The rolling gait of a heavy horse gives a completely different feel in the saddle. Cumbrian Heavy Horses is the world’s only BHS-approved heavy horse riding centre and offers a range of riding on fields, fells and beaches in the Lake District National Park aboard magnificent Clydesdale, Shire, Suffolk, Comtois and Ardennes heavy horses.

34) Compete in the Mongol Derby

The longest and toughest horse race in the world – over 1,000km of Mongolian Steppe, on semi-wild horses, changing steeds every 40km. You navigate and survive on your wits and skill, living among the herders. It’s you and your horse vs the wild. Here’s eight things you need to know before you start planning your trip.

35) Enjoy the thrill of a team chase

The exhilarating sensation of galloping across the country, over whatever fences block your path, with a group of mates. No one takes themselves too seriously and it’s a lot of fun. Here are some tips on how to get started.

36) Jump bareback

If you want to have a go, the answer is to start small, build up and practise. Just remember, canter is more comfortable than trot! If you feel insecure riding with no saddle, start on the lunge so you can concentrate on your position rather than what the horse is doing. Here are some riders taking part in the Bareback Challenge at Bury Farm to give you some inspiration.

37) Ride an Icelandic in tölt

The small and compact Icelandic horses are famous for their fifth gait, the tölt. Book yourself up on a trip to Iceland to put it to the test – and if you time it right you could see the Northern Lights.

38) Have a go at horseball

Do you back yourself to be able to cling on for a fast-paced game of horseball? A number of riding schools offer lessons and clinics, and the British Horseball Association has a list of registered trainers who are available to come out to groups of riders who want to learn the sport.

39) Ride in the main ring at Hickstead

Hone your dressage, showing and showjumping skills and get out there and get winning.

40) Represent your country

Competition will be exceptionally hot for this year’s World Equestrian Games teams, but there are opportunities at lower levels, such as the CCI3*-S European Cup or the Home Internationals in dressage.

We might be in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, with no definite timescale on when things might start returning to normal, but this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be allowed to dream about a future holiday — and for us, preferably one on horseback.

For most equine adventurists, deciding they want to embark on a horseback safari across the vast and wildlife-filled landscapes of Africa is the easy part. There is no question that cantering alongside a herd of wild zebra, creeping up to an elephant bull drinking from a watering hole or gazing out across jaw-dropping scenery should be high on every rider’s bucket list. However, the biggest question that arises is: which horse safari and destination is the right one for me?

In the process of turning the dream into reality, it is not uncommon to find yourself with a hundred browser tabs open as you attempt to navigate the large expanse of the internet to find the perfect horse riding holiday. A horseback safari is a big trip and so it is easy to feel overwhelmed or pressured by the task of getting the decision exactly right. If you are finding more questions than answers on your journey, some of the best advice is to talk to someone that lives, breathes and rides Africa.

H&H speaks to Isabel Juby, marketing and sales manager and horse safari consultant at African Horse Safaris, who shared some of her top tips for choosing the right horse safari for you…

1. What is your riding experience?

“Being honest about your riding experience is one of the most important factors when determining which ride is right for you. We offer a guide to riding levels and then speak on the phone to chat through riding experience, but this may vary company-to-company, so take the time to get it right. It’s about ensuring you will get the most out of your safari by joining a suitable ride, with other riders of the same level. Whether you have been riding since you could walk, or are new to the sport, there are many brilliant options for all levels, and even some perfect family horse riding holidays.

“In order to venture out into the lands of big game such as lion, elephant, and buffaloes, you will need to react effectively to any situation out in the bush, even galloping out of trouble if required, so need to be a fit and balanced rider who feels they fall into the intermediate plus or advanced category of experience.

“Worried you might not be up to this? It is important to choose a ride which will not ‘over-horse’ you. This is for your own safety and enjoyment — and for that of your group too. If you haven’t got as many hours in the saddle under your belt, we often recommend our more flexible safaris which can vary the length and speed of the rides. They also offer an abundance of other activities, such as game drives and nature walks, if you fancied a break from four-legged transport.”

2. What are your expectations for your dream horse safari?

“Do you dream of endless canters across open savannah, with herds of zebra and wildebeest stretching as far as the eye can see? Have you always imagined yourself high in the saddle tracking elephant herds through the flood waters of the Okavango Delta or galloping across vast and breath-taking desert landscapes? Are you looking to strip back to basics like the explorers-of-old and sleep out under the stars? Or would you prefer a luxurious bush-escape, where you can enjoy a relaxing dip in the plunge pool after your morning ride? Knowing how you imagine your bucket-list horse safari makes it easier to turn that dream into a reality.

“Trail-based rides require a good level of experience as there is less room for flexibility when you need to get from A to B. There are some long days in the saddle, but the sense of excitement and achievement when pulling into a new camp is extremely rewarding.”

3. When are you wanting to travel?

“Africa is a kaleidoscope of different terrains and unique landscapes, many of them best discovered from the saddle. Africa’s wildlife is never static, and their movements are often dictated by rainfall. This this can lead to some destinations being more seasonal than others. For example, the world-famous wildebeest migration in Kenya’s Masai Mara is between July and October. This is the time to travel if you long to canter through vast wildebeest-filled plains. Likewise, if you have always dreamed of throwing up water as you splash your way through the Okavango Delta, you will need to travel when the yearly floods have arrived down from Angola. If you have your heart set on a particular experience, it is worthwhile bringing this into discussion when planning your trip.

“The long and short of it is that there is no bad time for safari. Different seasons offer different experiences. It is important to determine what is important to you. Some riders really struggle in hotter weather and will prefer the cooler winter months, whereas others are sun-worshipers and are not bothered by heat. Budget can also come into play as certain rides offer high and low season rates. It is important to find a balance between your preferred type of weather, your budget and your chances for the best wildlife viewing.

“The winter months are often considered brilliant for wildlife sightings as the bush is dry, the grass short and the wildlife must stick closer to the available water sources. Competition is therefore fierce, and you can get incredible predator sightings. If you love the heat of summer, you will be rewarded with stunning cloud-filled sunsets, lush green landscapes, and many newborn animals. You will have to be prepared for some rain, but this usually comes in the form of an exciting and dramatic thunderstorm which quickly passes. Spring and Autumn are personal favourites — the transformational months, with vivid changes as mother nature moulds the landscapes.”

4. Who are you travelling with on your horse safari?

“Whether you are a solo explorer or looking for a family holiday, there is a horse safari for everyone. Most trail-based rides have set group departure dates making them perfect for solo-travellers, couples, or groups of friends. As a solo-traveller, you meet a group of like-minded adventurers, all with a shared interest of horse riding. Over 50% of our bookings are single travellers, so these trips are designed to accommodate.”

5. What is your budget?

“There is no denying that riding in Africa is not a low budget holiday and can often be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As a result, choosing the right horseback safari for you is imperative. We suggest that while researching the right horse riding experience, you also have a look into the costs of international flights from your home to Africa. This will help give you a rough idea of what the costs would be on top of your safari and help to set your budget. All our rides are all-inclusive, so from the moment you touchdown in the airport, you will spend very little.

“Again, expectations have a big role to play in deciding which ride is best for you. If you are seeking to immerse yourself in pure wilderness above all else, then the experiential horse safaris can be more affordable. If you want a taste of luxury accommodation but have budget restraints, we can look at you travelling in the low or shoulder seasons. If you want to splurge and have more time, then it is worth considering extending your safari, such as spending some extra time exploring different destinations in Africa, such as Victoria Falls or Cape Town.

“Your best bet is to chat to someone in the know and who has travelled to these destinations. They will have a good idea of the costs associated. As a rule, East Africa tends to be in a higher price bracket than Southern Africa. This is largely due to the costs of park fees and conservation levies. These costs can be high — but remember, you are paying for the exclusivity of being the only ones out there and are directly aiding the preservation of these wilderness areas and the wildlife that inhabit them.”

You’ve worked hard for years at school, you’ve finally completed your A-Levels and you’ve decided to reward yourself with a gap year before starting university. But what to do? If you love horses, here’s just a few ways you could give your gap year an equestrian theme. Pack your bags, grab your passport, let’s go…

1. South African coast working rider

This trip gives you the opportunity to work and ride with horses all day for four weeks or more on the South African coast for a riding holiday company. Riders should have a good foundation in flat work schooling and be able to ride and work a horse in the correct outline. 3. Learn about horseracing in Zimbabwe

This course in Zimbabwe aims to develop your horseracing skills to the fullest. Not only will you learn about horse racing, you will also learn what it is like to manage and maintain a racing stable. Days will be varied as you work on a number of aspects that will contribute to your goal of becoming a competent jockey with knowledge of proper animal care. You will undertake chores such as feeding, grooming and exercising the racehorses as well as maintaining the racing yard and assisting at races. Two-, three- and four-week courses are available.

4. Teaching riding in the USA

Why not share your equestrian knowledge with children at an American summer camp? An ex-army officer and founder of a horseback safari company has been killed in Kenya.

Tristan Voorspuy was found dead on 5 March after, it is believed, he rode into an ambush.

A statement on the Foreign Commonwealth Office website confirms a British national was murdered on his Laikipia ranch as he went to investigate damage caused by invaders.

Mr Voorspuy, the owner and founder of Offbeat Safaris Ltd, was born in South Africa and raised in the UK.

He served for six years in the army, two of which as a ceremonial mounted cavalry officer.

Mr Voorspuy led safaris professionally in East Africa for more than three decades and had ridden in numerous countries across the continent.

After six years of guiding with Tony Church’s mounted safaris in Kenya, he founded Offbeat Safaris in the country in 1990.

“We cannot thank you all enough for all your amazing messages, sending us so much love and overwhelming support since Tristan’s untimely death. It has strengthened us all hugely,” said a statement from Offbeat Safaris.

“Our main comfort is knowing that when Tristan set out on his horse from Sosian, he was doing it for what he loved and believed in most; fighting for a cause that he was completely committed to.

“He was driven by his honourable dedication for the welfare of the wildlife and indeed the safety of us all here in Kenya.”

Many tributes have been paid to the horseman.

Travel agency Ride World Wide described him as “one of Africa’s best ever guides”.

“[He] will always be remembered for his incredible enthusiasm, knowledge and love of Africa,” said a statement.

“Tristan was a dear friend and inspiration to us and our thoughts are with his family. A sad, sad loss.”

A funeral will take place at Deloraine on 11 March and a UK memorial is planned for 6 July at Greens Norton in Towcester.

‘Safari as it should be’

This is safari as it should be; there are no rangers radioing each other discreet updates; no wifi, no mobile phone signal, no concrete. There is a generator, but one feels surrounded only by hurricane lanterns and wood fires. Macatoo (maximum 14 guests) is one of only three lodges in an area of half a million hectares, so you are on your own, with excursions a daily lottery, though guides carry satellite phones with which to call a chopper if anyone comes a cropper.

The camp

Macatoo is practically invisible until you’re in it. Guests’ tents are laced cleverly between trees, and the main lodge is a chic, open-sided canvas and timber affair. Though you would not guess it from brochures, the Okavango is not a watery, lily-strewn paradise year round, but floods each March for several months, after which it reverts to being a still-verdant region strewn with mini-islands.

The stables

Macatoo’s 48-strong gelding herd grazes out on the Delta, in ‘pop up’ fields made with electric fences. A groom stays on watch them to keep them safe. At night they sleep in a cool barn bedded on sand. Baboons nip in and out of the stalls at will.

Elephant watching

It was only two days before we savoured our best champagne moment, visiting a watering hole so full of activity, one half expected David Attenborough to pop up to complete the scene. A croc slunk away, half-submerged hippo ears flickered, and a monitor lizard retreated as we approached. Then, as fish eagles skimmed the water, some 24 ellies arrived to drink and cool off. Minutes passed like seconds; it was my best safari moment ever.

One ride ended at a tree-top platform where lunch awaited, along with fresh clothes dug out of our tents and laid out ready.

Spotting wild dogs

Our rides encountered quizzical giraffes, straight-tailed warthog, giant monitor lizards, reed buck, eland, tsessebe, wild dog, buffalo and so much more besides.

The group

Our group of five riders gelled instantly. Besides two Berkshire Lucys was a daughter (Rose), mother (Fiona) and grandmother (Diana) from one family who had all evented or hunted. Diana, 78, was a Cornish vet who hopped every optional log. If ever I felt sore, I had only to think: “Pull yourself together; a lady 34 years older than you is doing just fine.”

The bushfire

Botswana; unfenced, truly wild and managed only by nature’s whims, is good at surprises. Last time I visited, unseasonal downpours bogged down our support truck and scuppered our ride. This time the issue was fire, started by lightning strikes on the eve of our arrival. Normally, seasonal rains would soon extinguish them. Instead we had a mini-heatwave and stiff breezes pushing flames across tinder-dry bush.

I have just come back from my last safari — a three-day trip into the bush.

It was a reminder of how beautiful this country is, although I wasn’t feeling 100% having suffered some kind of allergic reaction that resulted in a very swollen face!

On my last game drive we saw a pregnant lioness, which was such a stunning sight.

All the guides know the area and wildlife so well that they can tell you what animals belong to which families, so you get a real inside knowledge into their existence.

I quite like knowing that despite the animals being wild, there are still people that would notice if one of them wasn’t there.

There is nothing like nature to remind you that you are powerless in its hands.

On a recent lodge to lodge ride one of the camps had an African bee hive and they apparently go crazy for fresh cut grass so started stinging the horses.

All but one horse broke free and returned to the stables safely. It is amazing that despite it being 25km away as the crow flies, they all naturally knew to come back to the main base.

Unfortunately one horse, Rhodes, stayed with the grooms and got stung so badly he passed away.

We had a vet out here at the time that was doing a few days safari in exchange for treating all of the horses’ backs and doing their teeth. She helped ice bandage legs, treat stings and did all she could for Rhodes, but sadly he didn’t make it.

One of the things I love about Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris is that the horses really are the priority. Louise is so particular about their care and management, whether it be bringing out a trainer to help teach the staff how to ride them more effectively, or a vet to keep them in peak health.

This all adds to the guests’ experience and ensures the horses are in the best condition.

I think this is the reason that companies like In The Saddle are so happy to work with them because they meet all the criteria, not just for an exceptional trip, but for the good of the animals as well.

We always have a cook on site and unfortunately she was unwell towards the end of my stay, which meant that I had to step up to the culinary challenge of cooking afternoon tea and dinner for the guests.

I absolutely loved it, especially as I am going to university in September to study food science.

I have never cooked South African-style food before so it was great to learn. One dish I really enjoyed was called Bobotie — a curry with raisins, lots of spices and a layer of eggs on top.

So not only have I learnt a lot about Africa but I got the chance to embrace my inner domestic goddess too!

The experience at Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris has been amazing.

I got to go on five game drives in total and see all the wildlife I could imagine. I was also able to school beautiful horses, including Foxy, who will always stay close to my heart. I didn’t want to leave!

Having seen other safaris whilst I was on the reserve I can honestly say that seeing this part of the world by horseback is the best way to do it if you can ride.

I have also made a friend for life in Kate, who is here teaching the local children — including Cor and Louise’s — at Limpopo Valley Horse Safari’s own primary school.

Louise and Cor have been great hosts. I can’t thank them enough for giving me the opportunity to experience the equestrian world in such a different way!

Since I have been at Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris I have been saving up all my days off in order to take a quick trip to Cape Town and be a tourist for a week! It was a really exciting trip and great to see a different side of Africa, but it was equally lovely to get back to the horses and the vast open space of the bush.

My latest safari was exciting from the word go! Before venturing off we make sure everyone is teamed up with the right horses. On this particular occasion, myself and some of our guests from In The Saddle had just agreed that everyone was well matched when our guide, David, shouted for us to ‘watch the hole’ — which we all took to mean — ‘don’t fall down the hole’ — however what he really meant was to point out that the hole was full of warthogs! About 11 of them, all around the size of a small sheepdog, proceeded to file out of the hole and scatter, sending the horses in a range of different directions! Everyone remained seated and the horses were brilliant, but it was certainly a test for everyone’s reactions and reminded me that anything can happen out here.

We made our way to Jwala, which is around a 5hr ride, surrounded by zebra and some spectacular birdlife. After lunch at the camp we went on a bush walk, which is a fabulous way to learn about the area at a slightly slower pace. The next destination was Kgotla and the ride here was one of the prettiest I have been on so far. You ride through amazing orange-coloured rocks that are bigger than you can imagine! The camp is equipped with some real luxuries, including a power shower and proper toilet. The guests get to sleep out under the stars if they want to, which is a very memorable experience and something I will never forget. I really like Kgotla as it is like a hidden den that you don’t even realise is there until you are in it so you really do blend into the bush.

Kgotla was bustling with spectacular sights — we saw lots of wildebeest and zebra and the most amazing sunsets. You can climb up the rocks and feel like you are on top of the world as it overlooks the Mojale River and you can see for miles.

We then rode on to Liana where there were a lot more animals and we got to go on a game drive. We saw all three types of big cat, including the moment when our guide, Kaiser, pulled up under a tree and told us to look up only to see a leopard sleeping right above us! We were also privileged enough to see nature at its wildest when three male cheetahs were feeding on a kudu they had just caught.

It has just dawned on me that I only have six weeks left here, it really has gone quickly! I have had moments when I have got a bit homesick, but the guests and staff here are all lovely. What amazes me is that people get on so well. We had five people on a recent safari all coming from different places around the world and yet their shared interest in horses and seeing Botswana brings them together and gives them common ground.

I’m off now to cool down as the temperatures are soaring — I hear it is a little different back at home!

I have just returned from my first mobile safari, staying four nights in ‘the bush’ with some of our guests from In The Saddle, and having experienced true outdoor life — a bush bathroom and washing outside — I can honestly say it was fantastic!

I hear that the weather in the UK has been ‘typically British’ and I have to admit to seeing my first drop of African rain. However it is a far cry from what we have back home! In Botswana when it rains, it pours, but unlike the grey drizzle and damp that I am used to the rain lasts for a matter of minutes and returns to glorious sunshine straight afterwards. The great thing is that it refreshes the temperature, so all the animals come out — meaning that our guests get to see even more game than normal!

I was riding Foxy again to give him experience and show him what life is like on a safari — he was so good and took it all in his stride. The riding is really fun on safari, especially in the Tuli area of Botswana. You walk quite a bit so you can take in the sights and also negotiate some of the more challenging terrain, but equally there are some lovely places to go for long canters and jump logs and ditches if you wish.

One evening when I was on nightwatch, there were a pack of hyenas around 15 metres from the camp because a Zebra had died on the edge and they were making the most of the meal. I did find it a little daunting at first but out here it is just part of life.

While we were out on safari we also did a game drive, which was amazing. On horseback you try and avoid cats — for obvious reasons — but when you are in the car you can get closer. We saw nine cheetah and four lions, amongst other animals. There was a lioness with her three one-month-old cubs , they were so cute and looked like little puppies — playing and chasing each other. The cheetah were hunting wildebeest, so we got to see them stalking their prey and hiding in the bushes. It is so surreal to watch this all happen and think that this is just nature and really does happen every day!

I am thoroughly enjoying my trip, although I am feeling quite tired after the safari. The staff sleep outside under the stars, which is beautiful but you are naturally more alert, and getting up at 5am every morning to get the horses ready to leave by 6am, together with around 6hrs in the saddle, means long days! My main job when we are out with guests is to school and get horses used to going on safari, but I also help waitress during meals, clean tack, and generally look after the horses.

One of the things that still makes me smile every time is that West, our guide, cracks the bull whip just before we arrive at camp to alert the staff ahead who have set up camp, and three grooms will be standing waiting to take the guests’ horses the second we arrive. The Tuli Safari is one of the most thrilling and exciting adventures I have ever been on and I can’t wait for the next one!

Although I left Heathrow to both parents in tears, my flight was surprisingly good and I even managed to get some sleep!

On arrival in Johannesburg I was met by a car, and along with some of the guests who were travelling through In The Saddle, we began the 7hr transfer to Limpopo Valley Safaris. It was an amazing drive, despite the length, with spectacular views. Everywhere is very dry — certainly different to what I left behind in the UK — and there is so much space and open land!

I arrived at 2.30pm and the first thing I noticed was the heat. At around 37 degrees I can safely say that packing three jumpers was three too many! I was made to feel so welcome, the 18 members of staff were all there when I arrived, as it was the first day of the safari. At first I felt like a very small fish in a big pond but within minutes they had all welcomed me and we were talking like old friends.

Over the first couple of days I spent time schooling and lungeing some of the horses, went on a couple of hacks and then got to go on my first safari ride. It was awesome — I saw elephants, giraffes and all sorts of wildlife, including a young hyena, which thought it was very funny to pretend to stalk us! Every time I turned round it was frozen to the spot but a few yards ahead of where it had been before – it was very entertaining!

At the end of the week we had lessons with English event rider, Jonathan Chapman, who was there to go on safari and teach some of the staff. He picked up on the same bad habits that my instructor at home works with me on so in some ways it was very familiar, however instead of having 30 coloured poles with different wings to jump we had three painted tree trunks and a selection of barrels to choose from!

The horses are all lovely — I was really shocked at how beautifully schooled they all are. I have already fallen in love with a young horse called Foxy, he is only four years old and I am hoping they won’t notice if I sneak him back in my suitcase at the end of my time here!

I am enjoying everything and having so much fun! I can’t really believe that I have only been here a little over a week — it feels like so much longer.

Harriet Walker is swapping hunting and horses in Leicestershire for three months as a working pupil at Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris in Botswana. Follow her journey as she jets off on her very own African adventure…

The past two years have been focused on completing my A-levels which has meant the time spent working with horses has been curtailed, however after all that hard work I am rewarding myself with a gap year before I go to university, to spend some time following my ambitions.

I was lucky enough to take a trip to Madagascar a few years ago which fuelled my love for Africa — I was totally taken aback by the beauty of the country and it has been my mission to return to that part of the world ever since.

When I was talking to hunting friends who had visited Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris in Botswana through equestrian travel company, In The Saddle, they suggested that I combine my ambition to see more of Africa with my desire to work with horses.

I sent my CV to Louise Carelsen, who is the managing director at Limpopo, and after an exchange of emails she agreed that I could spend three months working with her on the Mashatu Game Reserve that her and husband Cor, call home.

I will be spending my time at Limpopo helping to break and school young horses and generally learning a different method of horse management. Although the horses at Limpopo are all ridden in English saddles and trained to a high level, I am expecting a bit of a culture shock!

At the moment I have very mixed emotions. I am nervous because I really don’t know what to expect and three months away from my family and friends is quite a long time — but I am mostly very, very excited!

I cannot wait to see the vast open spaces, wild animals in their natural habitat and experience the thrill and exhilaration of a horseback safari. It will be so different to any experience I have had in the UK and a once in a lifetime opportunity.

So wish me luck for the first steps of my journey! I fly from Heathrow into Johannesburg on 29 September where I will be met, hopefully, by someone holding a sign with my name on. Then its a 5hr transfer to Limpopo in the south east of Botswana, where my African adventure will truly begin.

I’ll let you know how I am getting on in a couple of weeks.

When I was told I had won the Zara’s Planet safari competition in Horse & Hound, I just couldn’t believe it! “But I never win anything!” I thought.

After sharing the good news with family and friends, I invited my friend Pip to come with me. She has done so much for me, letting me borrow her horses to ride and hunt over the years, that it seemed like a nice way to say thank you.

Day 1

We arrived in Victoria Falls airport 24hrs after leaving home, tired, but relieved that our bags had managed to make it to the same destination as us after two transfers! On our way to Hwange National Park we saw elephants, steenbok, sable antelope and baboons, before meeting up with our guide, James Varden, who took us on to Umchibi, our base camp.

On arrival at Umchibi we met the rest of the safari company and after a spot of lunch, we headed out for a quick ride. I was on Cody, a lovely little chestnut gelding, while Pip had a grey mare called Bora. While out on our ride, we saw zebra, giraffe and plenty of kudu (an animal like a deer, but with much bigger ears!).

When we got back we had a bucket shower (not as scary as it sounds!) under the stars and sat around the campfire for an amazing three-course meal cooked by the chef, and a few drinks. It gets really cold at night so as soon as the sun goes down the main priority is getting the fire lit, putting plenty of layers on and getting warm food inside you!

Day 2

After a good night’s sleep, we were up and about early with a full day of riding ahead of us. After a lovely bacon and egg breakfast, we headed off out into the bush. Pip was riding a chestnut mare called Tiger and I was on Cody again.

We hadn’t been riding long when we reached the Muckwa pan, which is normally a very wet area, but as there had been no rain for three months, most of the park is very dry, apart from the pumped pans.

Our first wildlife encounter of the day was a warthog that ran straight in front of us. It was such a funny little creature! We also saw lots of giraffe and kudu, before stopping for a lovely lunch under the trees, while the horses had a rest and munch.

The paths we are using are called ‘Elephant Highways’ and after lunch we came across a small herd of elephants, who promptly stopped and changed direction when they noticed us.

When we reached our camp, we untacked the horses and tied them up to have a drink and a munch, before they were given their tea and put away for the night. When in the bush the horses are kept inside a ‘boma’ overnight, which is a high canvas wall which keeps the horses in and predators out, hopefully! Once the horses were settled we sat down for a wonderful fish and chip supper!

Day 3

Last night was disturbed by a hyena wandering around the outside of camp, and this morning has definitely been one for the birds! We have seen Vultures, Tawny, African and Batleur Eagles. We also have seen steenbok and sable.

I managed to rip my jodhpurs on thorns as we were riding through the bush. There are thorns everywhere and they are not small. We found one earlier today which was about 5in long!

We also enjoyed a gallop through the Dopi basin, while being watched by some very curious zebra.

When we got to the second waterhole of the day, we untacked the horses and rode bareback into the water. All the horses decided to have a roll in the water to cool off, which they appeared to thoroughly enjoy! Then we sat under some trees and had lunch and a snooze, as did the horses; most of them were flat out fast asleep in the sunshine!

James, Janine (his wife) and the other guys do an amazing job with the horses; they have done nothing but impress so far. They are well mannered and totally unflappable in scary situations. It is clear that the horses are very well looked after and they certainly like their treats!

After lunch, we took the horses back down to the pan for a drink before we set off back for camp. This time there were baboons drinking and playing in the waterhole!

On our way back to camp we saw a young bull elephant — the sheer size of them is incredible and they blend in so well with their surroundings. We also saw giraffe grazing in the trees; they are difficult to spot as they are very well camouflaged. It is a good job that we have the trained eyes of James with us, otherwise we wouldn’t have seen them at all!

The day came to a close sitting around the campfire after showering and eating another wonderful meal while listening to the sounds of the bush — this really is the most fascinating place!

Day 4

Well, I did not sleep very well at all last night! Every time I was nodding off a nearby lion started roaring — it was so loud! In the morning there were some lion prints really close to the camp.

After breakfast we went out on foot to explore. The walk gave us the chance to appreciate things that we do not see from horseback, such as animal prints and small creatures. We saw elephant prints, as well as tracks left by giraffe and dyka. We also spotted lots of birds including the hoopie and the sparrow-tailed bee-eater. On the way back to camp we came across a small herd of elephants with two incredibly cute young babies. When they caught sight of us, they very quickly ran off!

After lunch we set out for our overnight camp. This time I switched onto Bora, who is lovely. We jumped lots of logs that the elephants had knocked down on the paths. On the way back through the woods we followed some fresh leopard prints, but didn’t catch a glimpse of him. Then we came across some giraffes, who let us get really close to them and take photos.

As the sun went down, we reached our camp for the night. It was in the trees but very close to the Dopi basin. As we sat around the campfire after yet another wonderful meal, we could hear elephants calling to each other at the waterhole. It was a wonderful moment!

Day 5

We climbed aboard our mounts after breakfast, (Pip swapped onto Cody) and set off for Nyamandhlovu pan. As we wanted to be able to have as much time there as possible on the viewing platform, we trotted and cantered most of the way.

We then left the horses with the grooms and travelled to the platform by truck. This gave us the chance to enjoy lunch, accompanied by a lovely glass of wine, while watching all the amazing wildlife. My favourite bird so far has to be the lilac breasted roller — they are stunning! They are vivid blue and lilac so not at all in-keeping with their surroundings.

From the viewing platform, we could see giraffe, kudu, hippos, zebra, crocodile and ostrich. The crocodiles and the hippos spend time in and out of the water, bathing in the sun then getting back into the water to cool off. The other animals come down to drink but constantly keep an eye out for the predators.

On our way back to camp, we saw a large herd of elephants at the waterhole; the adults drinking while the babies played in the water. Then another herd came down to drink, and as they were leaving, the babies started rolling in the sand!

Once back at camp, we showered and prepared for our steak and mashed potato supper (my favourite!). The chef also made a chocolate cake — honestly, the man is a genius! He can quite literally cook anything on that fire of his, and all the food just tastes incredible!

Day 6

We were all woken early this morning by a hyena screaming. It must have been very close to camp because it was so loud!

We are having a short day today, hopefully getting back to the other camp by lunch time. While riding this morning we saw lots of zebra and warthog. We also had lots of opportunities for cantering and jumping, and saw impala, kudu, and steenbok.

We have taken down the electric fence tonight in an effort to attract some lions or hyena into camp! Off to bed though now as we have an early start in the morning to get to Somalisa, our final stop off.

Day 7

After an early breakfast, we headed out and saw lots of animals; giraffe, steenbok and roan antelope (which are apparently very rare!). We also saw a white-backed vulture taking off from the nest just in front of us. Seeing one of these birds so close was incredible. The sheer size of them is unbelievable; their wingspan is over two metres long!

As we cantered along one of the tracks we saw an elephant carcass which still had skin on it – it stank! There was lots of space around it where James says, other elephants have come to pay their respects to the deceased.

Further along the path we ran into two huge bull elephants. They weren’t too pleased to see us and prepared to charge at us! We turned around ready to run, but they seemed to change their mind and disappeared off through the trees.

We also met some elephants on our arrival at Somalisa, but this time they were drinking from the swimming pool! The accommodation at Somalisa is truly wonderful. The ‘tents’ are very luxurious with wooden floors, wardrobes, huge beds and … flushing toilets!

Before dinner James took us out in one of the trucks to see a lion kill up the road. On the way we saw elephants, giraffe, kudu, impala zebra and lots of vultures waiting to get in on the action! We also caught a glimpse of a Carakyl, a very small cat who is apparently very rare.

The kill was a buffalo lying in the middle of the road. We pulled up alongside and the lion was lying right next to us making sure that no-one would steal his food. He didn’t really seem too bothered about us being there — he had eaten so much he could barely move!

From there we drove to the Kennedy pan, where there were nearly 40 elephants drinking from the pan. We sat and watched them for nearly an hour before it got too dark to see them properly. They are so much fun to watch; they are very sociable creatures apart from when uninvited guests arrives. A lone bull elephant arrived and was quickly chased off by one of the other bulls!

When we got back to camp there were lots more elephants gathered around the pool having a drink! We sat and ate our dinner whilst watching them in the waterhole and at the pool under the full moon.

After dinner we sat around the campfire watching all the different animals come to the waterhole to drink, zebra, hyena, giraffes and others. The animals come from all directions. The land is so dry at the moment it is a wonder anything can survive.

Day 8

Pip and I are heading off to Victoria Falls today so after breakfast, we were driven back to the main camp to meet our transfer back up to Victoria Falls. On our way back to base camp we saw a group of male wildebeest; it is quite unusual to see so many of them together. We also saw many giraffe, kudu, impala and elephants.

Words simply cannot describe Victoria Falls. To see them with your own eyes is so much better than any TV footage or pictures. It is the sound that gets you; it really is “the smoke that thunders.” It is the dry season at the moment and the volume of water coming over the falls is still phenomenal! We got very wet walking down to the bottom of the falls, there is so much spray. But we soon dried off in the sun. We walked all the way along the side of the falls and stood right on the edge of the cliffs. We also saw someone bungee jumping off the bridge, but neither of us was brave enough to have a go!

So, that was our trip — the most amazing experience of my life. A massive thank you to James and Janine Varden at Varden Safaris and their staff for making our trip one to remember!
