What saddle pad should I wear for a dressage test?

Usually, you’d use a white pad for a dressage test, but the shape will depend on your saddle. If you have a dressage saddle, then one of the dressage squares above would be appropriate, but if you have a GP saddle, then one of the best GP saddle pads in white would be the perfect option.

Do I need a white saddle pad for dressage?

It is common practice to wear a white, square dressage saddle pad for dressage competitions. The British Dressage rule book states saddlecloths or numnahs are to be predominantly white/cream or a conservative colour. Check with organisers at unaffiliated levels as they may allow other colours.

How often you really need to have your saddle checked, plus advice from a Society of Master Saddlers master saddle fitter

Booking a saddle fitting and getting your horse’s saddle checked is something all horse owners should be doing regularly, but it can fall by the wayside until there’s an issue. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got a second-hand GP saddle, a custom-made dressage saddle or something in between, good saddle fit is essential to your horse’s welfare.

We asked Ruth Spencer, a master saddle fitter who also serves on the board of Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) assessors, to explain how often you really need to get your saddle checked and answer some other need-to-know questions about saddle fitting.

How often should you get your saddle checked?

As a general rule, saddles should be checked at least every six to 12 months.

“This is in line with guidance from the Society of Master Saddlers,” Ruth explains, “however, it isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Horses in regular work, young horses, those changing shape through training, or those coming back into work after time off may need more frequent checks.

“In contrast, a mature horse in consistent, light work with a stable condition may be fine with annual checks – but it’s important not to become complacent, as subtle changes can still occur over time,” she warns.

What factors affect saddle fit?

A horse’s shape is not static, so saddle fit can change for a variety of reasons, but riders can also affect how the saddle fits and performs, Ruth explains.

These factors include:

changes in horse weight
muscle development (or loss)
fitness levels
age
workload
seasonal factors, such as availability of grazing
changes in rider weight
rider position or balance

Additionally, the saddle itself can alter over time through flocking compression, wear or tree movement.

What can owners do between checks to ensure good fit?

There are several simple but effective checks owners can do regularly, Ruth reveals.

You should look for:

Even contact and balance – the saddle should sit level and not tip forward or back
Clearance and symmetry – check there is adequate clearance over the withers and that the saddle sits evenly on both sides
Horse’s way of going – monitor changes in performance, willingness, or behaviour under saddle

“Consistently running your hands under the panels and observing your horse before and after work can help you pick up early signs of change,” she advises.

Signs a saddle doesn’t fit as well as it should

Common indicators include:

uneven sweat patterns
dry patches
ruffled hair under the saddle
reluctance to be tacked up
resistance under saddle
hollowing
change in performance
muscle wastage
soreness
sensitivity when grooming around the saddle area

Who can check saddle fit?

Owners should look for a fitter qualified through the SMS, such as a qualified saddle fitter (QSF). This ensures they have undergone recognised training, assessment, and adhere to professional standards. You can find more information about saddle fitting qualifications at mastersaddlers.co.uk.

Ruth adds that “ongoing professional development and insurance are also important indicators of a reputable practitioner”.

Regarding specific brands, Ruth says that a well-qualified, independent saddle fitter should be able to assess a wide range of saddles.

“Some brands do have specific design features, however, so a fitter with experience or training in that brand can be beneficial in some cases,” she adds.

“Ultimately, the priority should be the fitter’s qualifications, experience, and ability to work objectively in the horse’s best interest.”

How long does a standard saddle fit check take?

A standard saddle check typically takes 45–90 mins. It should include assessing the horse statically and in motion, templating, evaluating the saddle on and off the horse, checking flocking and balance, and observing the rider where possible.

Any necessary adjustments, such as flocking, may be carried out on the day or scheduled for a later date.

How much does saddle fitting cost?

As with many costs of keeping a horse, prices can vary depending on location and the level of service, Ruth explains, but costs “typically range from around £50 to £100 for a standard check, with additional costs for adjustments such as reflocking”.

She advises that it is always worth clarifying what’s included in the fee before booking an appointment.

“I struggle to find someone willing to check a saddle they haven’t sold me” – any advice?

Ruth agrees that this is a common frustration, but says “there are good fitters who will assess any saddle objectively”.

She suggests searching the SMS register to find qualified professionals in your area.

“When contacting fitters, be upfront about your needs – many will offer a check-and-advice service even if you’re not looking to purchase. Building a relationship with a trusted fitter over time can also make future appointments easier,” says Ruth.

“It’s worth remembering that an ethical, professional fitter’s priority should always be the welfare of the horse, regardless of where the saddle was purchased.”

Are these your saddles? Police keen to find rightful owners after two men arrested

Police are appealing for information as they try to reunite two saddles with their rightful owners.

Merseyside officers recovered the Albion and the Henri de Rivel, one a 17” and the other 17.5”, from an address in Wirral, which was searched as part of the arrest of two men.

“On 2 April we received a report that a flat in Oxton had been broken into and a gold chain and designer watches stolen from the address,” a Merseyside Police spokesperson said.

“Enquiries were conducted and on Thursday, 14 May, officers arrested two men in connection with the burglary.”

A 49-year-old man from Wallasey was arrested on suspicion of fraud, handling stolen goods and possession of a controlled Class B drug, cannabis. A 53-year-old man from Rock Ferry was arrested on suspicion of burglary and handling stolen goods.

Both men have been released on conditional bail while police enquiries continue.

“However, while carrying out a search of the address, two horse saddles were found, which are described as an Albion saddle with red buttons, and the other is a Henri de Rivel,” the spokesperson said.

“Officers would like the owner of the saddles to get in touch to reclaim them.

“If you are the owner or know who they belong to then please contact Merseyside Police social media desk using X or Facebook @MerPolCC with reference 26000272999.”

What’s the difference between a GP and a jump saddle?

An independent database of verified saddle, bridle and bit fitters has launched with the hope of being a “game-changer” for owners and benefiting horse welfare.

The Equine Fitters Directory is a searchable list of professionals who meet certain criteria and have applied to be on – and been accepted into – the directory.

It was launched on 3 February at Saddlers’ Hall in London by the Equine Fitters Council, an independent, not-for-profit company established by the Worshipful Company of Saddlers and the Worshipful Company of Loriners.

To be eligible, fitters must meet the qualification and experience requirements set out, hold insurance, pursue continuing professional development and agree to abide by the code of conduct and complaints procedure. Fitters can also be delisted from the directory.

“We have an absolute duty, more than ever, to do our best for our horses,” said Hugh Thomas, Equine Fitters Council chairman.

“A well-fitting saddle, bit, bridle or harness is essential to their comfort and overall wellbeing. When fit is correct, horse and rider are comfortable, confident and able to work without issue. Working with a competent and professional fitter helps owners make informed decisions, but above all, be confident that they are looking after their horses’ wellbeing and welfare.

“I want to emphasise that we very much see that fitters are part of a team, not just one more service provider brought in maybe once a year. They should be a key part of the regular care team of the horse alongside the obvious other people, long accepted vets, therapists, coaches and footcare professionals.

“Finding a professional, experienced fitter can feel overwhelming to the horse owner, but it shouldn’t. That is why we need this. The directory is designed to make it easy to search: compare fitters based on their location, their expertise, their specialisation, whether you need saddle, bridle, bit or harness fitter, so you can find the right practitioner for you and your horse.”

Mr Thomas added: “The key message of tonight is overwhelmingly aimed at horse owners: please look on the directory when you want a fitter. If you’ve got a fitter and they are not on the directory, ask them, ‘Why not?’”

In a panel discussion at the launch, World Horse Welfare chief executive Roly Owers said that when considering the involvement of horses in sport, the equestrian world has “a deep responsibility to ensure we are placing horse welfare above all else”.

“Equine fitters play such a fundamental role in that,” he said. “There’s a lot of noise out there, so to have an equine business directory to [help you] find someone you can really trust is going to be right for you and for your horse is a really huge step forward.”

William Fox-Pitt, who won 14 five-stars during his top-level eventing career, lent his support to the directory.

“We know that regularly checked and well-fitted tack both improve the welfare of our horses and their overall performance,” he said.

“I can reflect on numerous times in my career when even small alterations to match the ever-changing size and shape of my horse has made a fundamental difference. Having a ‘one-stop’ online directory that lists professional fitters that all riders and horse owners can trust must be the right thing.”

Dr Kathryn Nankervis, associate professor at Hartpury University, said that everyone who rides “would like to think their horse is comfortable” in the equipment we use, but research shows fit “isn’t always as good as it could be”.

“We have to try and raise the bar,” she said. “I’m really supportive of this initiative because anything that helps horse owners find a fitter and discover the benefits that optimal saddlery fit can bring has to be a good thing for owners and horses.”

‘Ambitious’ study on saddle fit for riders to help horses

An “ambitious” study at Hartpury University will have benefits for horse welfare and performance, and rider training, it is hoped.

The aim of the research, led by Kathryn Nankervis and Russell MacKechnie-Guire, with the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) research committee, is to produce industry-wide guidelines on saddle fit for the rider, to add to existing guidance on saddle fit for the horse.

“Despite widespread recognition that saddle fit in relation to the rider is an important consideration when fitting a saddle to the horse, and rider partnership, there remains no published guidance on rider-specific aspects,” a Hartpury spokesman said.

The team had looked at agreement between SMS saddle-fitters and coaches when assessing saddle fit, using a rider on a simulator. As an extension on 26 January, 60 horses and riders joined fitters and coaches at Hartpury to collect data.

“The aim was to once again find areas where there is a good level of agreement between saddle fitters and coaches when assessing saddle fit for the rider during real-world walk, trot and canter, in order to establish the most pertinent features relating to saddle fit,” the spokesman said.

Dissertation students will help research staff analyse the results, then findings will be presented to industry experts including the SMS research committee, for feedback before the study is published.

Dr Nankervis, associate professor at Hartpury, said: “This ambitious study sets out to provide evidence-based guidance developed in conjunction with the saddle-fitters and coaches tasked with working with all types of riders, from recreational novice riders to sporting professionals. Improving our understanding of how best to support riders to ride ‘in balance’ will have benefits not only for rider training but for the combined health, welfare and performance of horse and rider partnerships.

“We’re grateful to the Worshipful Company of Saddlers for funding the project and the SMS for their enthusiastic and supportive involvement throughout our research. I’d also like to thank the volunteers, all the coaches and fitters, and the horses and riders who are playing such a pivotal role in the research.”

It has also been announced that Gemma Penhorwood has been awarded a funded studentship to carry out a PhD at Hartpury University: “The interrelationship between optimal saddle fit and horse health, welfare, and performance”. The study is “set to revolutionise the understanding of saddle fit and its impact on equine wellbeing and performance and will add to the overall contribution from Hartpury in this area”, the spokesman said.

How do I keep my saddle pad from slipping?

Preventing a saddle pad from slipping is essential to keep you and your horse comfortable, and your saddle fitting as designed.

If your saddle is slipping, before anything else it’s important to ensure that it fits correctly – consult with a qualified saddle fitter. Your horse’s body can change over time and throughout the year so it’s recommended to get your saddle checked regularly.

Next, ensure you’re using all of the saddle pad straps. The number of straps varies across with design but if you have a strap missing on one side but not the other, this could cause the saddle pad to pull to one side.

If all of the above is in order and the saddle pad is clean and in good working use, then a non-slip pad might help.

Do non-slip saddle pads work?

Why does my saddle keep sliding back?

There could be several reasons why a saddle might slip back. But if it’s happening regularly it’s important to find the underlying cause to ensure the comfort and safety of both you and your horse.

The first thing to check would be saddle fit – this is the most common cause of a saddle sliding back. As above, it’s recommended you consult a professional saddle fitter regularly to ensure your saddle is fit for purpose.

Incorrect saddle placement is another common reason for a saddle moving back. If the saddle is too far forward it may slide back to the position in which it was designed to rest. Make sure the gullet is clear of the withers and the panels are evenly distributing pressure across the horse’s back.

Another common cause of saddle slippage is girth tension. Insufficient tension can cause a saddle to move back when riding. Make sure the girth is tight enough but not too tight to cause discomfort to the horse. If you can’t get any fingers underneath the girth it is too tight.

Some horses’ conformational characteristics can also lead to a saddle slipping back, such as high withers or a round barrel. In these cases, choosing a non-slip pad can help to mitigate the issue.

A new study shows the importance of ridden work in investigation of performance issues or low-grade lameness – and of understanding what horses are telling us.

Sue Dyson, former head of clinical orthopaedics at the Animal Health Trust, and Danica Pollard studied the use of the ridden horse pain ethogram (RHpE) on horses before and after diagnostic anaesthesia, or nerve-blocking.

The RHpE comprises 24 behaviours including tail-swishing and an open mouth, the presence of eight or more of which may indicate that the horse has musculoskeletal pain, even if it is not overtly lame.

The study, on 150 horses presented for investigation of poor performance, found that most of the horses initially had scores of eight or more of the behaviours, although “lameness in the conventional sense was low-grade or absent”. There was a substantial reduction in the RHpE scores after the nerve-blocking.

“The purpose of this study was to highlight the fact a lot of horses aren’t overtly lame but they’re not performing right,” Dr Dyson told H&H. “And there are ways of determining why they’re not right, and helping them.”

Dr Dyson has said previously that one benefit of the ethogram is identifying issues early, which means they can be treated sooner and so have a better chance of a good outcome.

Of the 150 horses, 35% had no overt lameness but lacked hindlimb impulsion or were short-stepping in front. Only 30% of horses were continuously lame, but the most frequent RHpE score before anaesthesia was nine. This score dropped to two after the nerve-blocks, and this was associated with improved quality of gait and rideability.

“This study highlights the importance of ridden exercise in the investigation of poor performance/low-grade lameness and the value of the RHpE to verify the presence of musculoskeletal pain,” Dr Dyson said.

“Veterinarians must be made more aware of this and must learn how to assess horses ridden, learn how to interpret riders’ complaints, and know how to progress with nerve blocks – or refer to someone who has those skills.”

Dr Dyson added that within the veterinary profession there is a lack of people experienced enough to assess ridden horses in poor-performance investigations, and that nerve-blocking is vital to pinpoint the areas of concern. She said, experienced vets will be able to see from the way a horse is moving what areas to investigate first.

Badly fitting saddles were also an issue. This contributed to poor performance in 37% of the horses despite recent professional saddle-fitting.

“The study didn’t surprise me at all. It’s got lots of messages for riders, owners and trainers,” Dr Dyson said.

“It highlights the importance of riders and trainers recognising that pain-free horses are both more rideable and enable riders to be in a better position and to experience less discomfort.

“The high prevalence of ill-fitting saddles, which adversely affected performance in these horses, emphasises the importance of educating riders and trainers about the importance of correct saddle fit for both the horse and rider for optimal performance.”

World Horse Welfare CEO Roly Owers told H&H this latest study on the RHpE is another “excellent reminder of its usefulness as a tool in helping us listen to what our horses are telling us through their movement and behaviour”.

“Poor performance due to undiagnosed pain and/or an ill-fitting saddle is more common than many of us realise, and this is where the ethogram can really help us to know when to engage our veterinarian or qualified saddle fitter, to ensure our horses are truly comfortable when being ridden,” he said.

The best saddle pads will draw away moisture from your horse’s back, keeping him dry and comfortable even when he’s working hard in hot weather. It will also fit your saddle well, offer a good amount of cushioning and spine clearance, and it shouldn’t move while you’re riding.

The straps for attachment should be of good length – and if they’re Velcro for easy fitting this is a real bonus. Some will attach to the girth straps, while others will attach at the D-rings, which may be more convenient unless you need those D-rings to attach a breastplate to. The best saddle pads will wash and wear well as you’ll need to put it through the wash frequently to keep it clean, smart and free from sweat and hair. Some feature an extra layer of protection where the girth sits to prevent the pad suffering wear in this area.

Why do you need a saddle pad?

A saddle pad provides a little extra cushioning between you and your horse, but it’s main function is to keep your saddle clean and wick sweat away from your horse’s back. Some saddle pads are anti-slip and provide extra security, while sometimes a saddle fitter will advise you use a particular shape or thickness of pad, such as a half pad, to temporarily improve the fit of your saddle.

What’s the difference between a saddle pad and a numnah?

A numnah is roughly the same shape as your saddle, whereas a saddle pad or saddlecloth is closer to a rectangular shape and you can see much more of it when the saddle is placed on top. Numnahs are commonly used in showing.

What size saddle pad do I need?

The best jump saddle pads sit nicely under your jump saddle, offer some level of protection and wick away moisture to keep your horse’s back sweat-free. Unfortunately you can’t just use your favourite GP saddle pad with a jump saddle, as the shape is very different and it won’t be very comfortable for your horse. When choosing your new jump pad, it’s important to choose a saddle pad with a cut that compliments your saddle. Most saddles are sold without stirrups or stirrup leathers, so finding the best stirrup leathers will help you make the most of your saddle. We’ve rounded up a few things worth considering when choosing a new pair of leathers and have selected a few of the best stirrup leathers worth taking a closer look at.

Stirrup leathers can be divided into three categories – traditional leathers, nylon-core with a leather covering or synthetic.

Traditional leathers tend to last well and maintain a smart appearance, plus it’s also quite an easy job to add holes with a leather hole punch if you need to. The only real drawback is that they can stretch and become uneven.

New saddle-fitting group to provide alternative body

A new saddle-fitting association has been launched to provide an alternative professional body for the industry.

The Professional Saddle Fitters Association (PSFA), a not-for-profit organisation, has been founded with the core aim of “improving horse welfare and/or quality of life to a level that would assure the public ridden work can be as every bit enriching for the equine as it is for the rider”.

Full PSFA membership can be gained directly by those who are Society of Master Saddlers qualified saddle-fitters (SMSQSF), or those who hold the Netherlands-based Academy of Master Saddle Fitting Consultants (MSFC) or the Lantra-approved Horse1st saddle-fitting certificates. Fitters who have not done these courses, but who wish to be considered for full PSFA membership, must submit evidence that their “level of expertise” complies with the Occupational Standards for Saddle Fitters, produced by a working party reporting to the Saddle Fitting (Training & Qualifications) steering group, chaired by the Saddlers Company, before they will be accepted.

An associate membership is available for provisional applicants who are progressing towards compliance with the occupational standard and aim to progress to full PSFA membership, and there is also a trainee membership. PSFA members must not already be registered with a saddle-fitting professional body, owing to the fact they are “already professionally represented” for their fitting services, and to avoid “conflict of interest”.

Caroline Lindsay, PSFA vice-president and veterinary physiotherapist, told H&H the association aims to be inclusive by providing a professional body for those that are SMSQSFs or hold the MSFC or Horse1st certificates – but also for those who have chosen to follow a different pathway into the industry, and PSFA members will have access to continued professional development.

“The past decade has seen an explosion in equitation research which is bringing us ever closer to the need for professionals who can address the horse, saddle and rider combination by serving those separate elements as one complete unit,” she said.

“We wanted to support motivated professional saddle-fitters who had already committed to fulfilling that need. To do this we are providing them with the opportunity to build on their comprehensive levels of expertise with our networking and educational resources, as well as a platform from which they can represent themselves to the public as fully committed to their professional obligations.”

PSFA president Dean Woodward added that the association’s objectives are to offer more learning and advanced opportunities that will “nurture a culture of professionals committed to progressing their levels of customer relations and fitting expertise to achieve even higher standards of ridden horse welfare”.

“We were aware that there were many competent saddle-fitters out there that are undoubtedly providing an approach to fitting that aligns with the occupational standards for saddle-fitters and frequently beyond it,” he said.

“We are confident this resource will be welcomed by equestrians and, ultimately, allied equine and equitation practitioners seeking intervention from professionally competent saddle-fitters.”

A spokesman for the SMS told H&H the society is aware of the PFSA, but did not wish to comment.

Thermal scanning for saddle-fitting should be ‘treated with caution’, research finds H&H Plus

There have been suggestions that thermal scanning may be an effective way of detemrining saddle fit. H&H speaks to researchers involved in a recently published study that found otherwise

THE use of thermal imaging to determine saddle fit should be “treated with caution”, as a study showed incorrect fit does not affect back temperatures.

In a study published in Animals, researchers found that thermal activity under incorrectly fitting saddles was no different to that under correctly fitted tack – or to the temperatures recorded after the horses had been lunged without saddles.

Researcher Russell MacKechnie-Guire, of Centaur Biomechanics, told H&H a leading thermography company and trained personnel carried out the thermal scans, and that each horse had “baseline” readings taken first, to act as a control. The horses used in the study were elite-level showjumpers ridden in their usual saddles, which were assessed by a team of qualified fitters.

Dr MacKechnie-Guire said the research followed a pilot study in which the team was involved, some years ago.

“Thermography was being suggested as a tool to quantify saddle fit, and we wanted to find out whether it was useful,” he said.

“There have been some studies looking at thermal activity by scanning the underside of the saddle after horses were ridden; suggesting a hot spot implies increased pressure and a cold spot no pressure, thus concluding that saddles didn’t fit by scanning the saddles. This has the potential to be misleading.”

Dr MacKechnie-Guire said the team followed strict protocols in taking all the measurements.

The horses were scanned after an hour in their stables with no rugs on, and no one had recently touched them, to get accurate baseline measurements. They were then lunged in cavessons, in a standardised test with equal work on each rein, then re-scanned, then ridden, again in a standardised exercise with equal work on both reins, and scanned.

“From the baseline to after the lungeing, we found the backs’ temperature increased,” Dr MacKechnie-Guire said. “That was expected, as temperature increases with exercise, but there was no difference in temperature between the lungeing and ridden test. Had we gone not done the lunging test, without saddles, and gone straight into the ridden work, we might have thought the back temperatures had changed because of saddle fit, when it was only a function of exercise.”

It has been suggested that high pressure under incorrectly fitting saddles could result in “hot spots” on the horse’s back but Dr MacKechnie-Guire said this was based on a “biological assumption” that increased pressure would lead to thermal activity change.

His team measured the forces under the horses’ saddles, using a pressure-mapping system. They found that even in saddles that were assessed as too wide, so created significantly increased pressure at the front, and too narrow, which meant significantly increased pressure to the rear, there was no change in the horses’ back temperatures.

“I’m supportive of thermography but like all tech, it has its limitations, and if you know what they are, you can work with them,” Dr MacKechnie-Guire said. “Using thermography for saddle-fitting should be approached with caution; it has many applications but not directly that.

“You can get devices that connect to your phone, or go and buy a [thermal] camera, and people are offering saddle-fitting thermography, which is really concerning.

“I’m not dismissing the technology, but if you were to have a scan and it concluded the saddle was a correct fit, but it’s causing high pressure, this could be misleading and ultimately the horse then has to manage that.”

Society of Master Saddlers master fitter Mark Fisher, who was also on the research team, told H&H he had noticed thermography being used in fitting, but was “not convinced”.

“It’s an extremely good piece of equipment but not necessarily for detecting pressure,” he said, agreeing with Dr MacKechnie-Guire that appropriate use of thermography was key.

“We had to be very strict with the protocols,” he said. “The horses were stabled overnight, then their rugs were left off; no one could even run a hand over them, or brush them, before the scan because the cameras are so sensitive and that could have meant a change that was misinterpreted. I found it very interesting; even different colours, such as on a skewbald, were different temperatures.”

Mr Fisher said there were five qualified saddle fitters present for the study, and “we wouldn’t consider using thermography as a tool for fitting”.

“It’s extremely effective for other things it’s used for, but not for this,” he said.

“It’s all about education; if we’d found it could work, on a daily basis in a normal stable yard, then great. We’ve got to keep learning, and pushing the boundaries.”

David Baxter on the diverse skills of being a master saddle fitter and his early encounter with a budding top event rider

My father worked in hunt service in Scotland so I grew up with horses and learnt to ride at an early age. I was expected to sit tight over small walls when I was three. We moved to Huddersfield when my father bought a riding school advertised in Horse & Hound. I joined the Rockwood branch of the Pony Club and experienced a lot with them.

Huddersfield was quite a wealthy area in the 1960s and ’70s with a lot of competitive and talented riders including the Whitakers, so there were a lot of good shows. My father, Charlie, was a judge at Horse of the Year Show and we originally had show ponies, then showjumpers before I fell in love with eventing.

After leaving school I went to Cordwainers in London where I had fantastic training. I returned home and established Throstlenest Saddlery in 1979. At first, I did repairs for racing and hunting yards, and made hackney harnesses, but I branched out into saddle fitting and then qualified as a master saddle fitter.

I was asked by an Italian furniture designer to shape and stitch some leather for a chair he’d designed and its photo made it on to the front cover of The Sunday Times Magazine. I also made a harness for a donkey who appeared in the TV programme Last of the Summer Wine.

I’d known Jayne, my wife, for some time, because she used to come to our riding school. We got together some years later when I went to fit a new saddle. She’s my fellow director in the business and is constantly developing new ideas. In the past we’ve had some great showroom openings with stars like John Whitaker and Milton, and Bob Champion and his Grand National winner Aldaniti.

I fell in love with eventing and competed to intermediate level. I always wanted to run a horse trials, so in the 1990s, Jayne and I, with a group of friends, established Bretton Hall Horse Trials, which ran for six years. We would have a Pony Club day after the British Eventing (BE) event and young riders like Oliver Townend and Matthew Wright came to compete. I still love eventing and Throstlenest Saddlery supports BE horse trials at Frickley, Epworth and Speetley.

I’ve known Oliver Townend’s father, Alan, since Pony Club days and we asked him to find a horse for us. Initially Alan rode Measure For Measure (Milly), but then Oliver popped up and asked why he wasn’t riding our horses! We hadn’t thought we were “proper” owners but when we started to support him, we had a fantastic time.

It’s incredibly rewarding to be in at the beginning of a talented rider’s career. We bought Golden Hue for Oliver and had dreams of London 2012. He won at Chatsworth three-star and went to Luhmühlen four-star, but ultimately didn’t stay sound so he came home to us. Jayne did some dressage and showjumping with him. He’s 20 now and definitely a character, but I still ride him.

As a master saddle fitter I’m on the road four days a week from Derbyshire to North Yorkshire and do fitting at home another two days – and still enjoy finding the right saddle for people. I like to see a good picture between rider and horse and the saddle is the key to that.

I stock a wide range of saddles and know my stock – different ranges work for different horses and disciplines. Much of what I do is by eye and instinct after 40 years, but the Society of Master Saddlers keeps me trained on all the latest scientific and veterinary advancements in saddle fitting.

I get as much reward from fitting a child’s first pony as a professional’s horse at the top of their game.

During the pandemic, we’ve been redesigning and refitting the shop, and setting up a cafe. The saddles are going to be in a separate showroom and when we’ve upgraded the arena, we hope more people will come to us rather than me being on the road.

We also still have dreams of starting again with a young competition horse, so maybe it’s time to start looking again…

This product performed very well throughout the time I tested it. The smaller D-ring straps are perfect for a close-contact saddle or a mono flap. It’s a nice shape and fitted all of the saddles I tried it with. It wicked any moisture away quickly, had a lovely high wither and provided enough cushioning.

I liked the simplicity and all-round purpose of this saddle pad. It has a good shape and I liked the mono-flap D-ring attachment. It’s a really great value saddle pad.

My only concern was that it didn’t have an attachment loop at the very front of it – but it never slipped so it may not be necessary. It washed well, too.

I liked the price and the design. It didn’t wick as well as the others but it’s a good product and would be useful on competition days.

Verdict

A well-designed saddle pad, ideal for use at competitions.

This saddlecloth had good clearance at the withers. It didn’t offer much cushioning underneath the saddle, but assuming you have a well-fitting saddle this shouldn’t be a problem. It wicked away any moisture, making it very straightforward when coming to brush or wash the horse off after exercise. It moulded well to each horse and never slipped or moved while in use. It is, however, quite thin and I felt it could have provided more cushioning.

I liked how quickly it wicked away moisture. It was, however, quite expensive in comparison to the others in test.

Verdict

I would recommend this as an everyday thin saddle pad.

First impressions

It looked lightweight, had good clearance for the horses withers and plenty of grip for the saddle to stay on.

Overview of performance

I found that this saddlecloth was quite fixed on the horse — it never moved or slipped. It had good aeration and was really breathable, but did leave marks on the horses coat that were consistent with the shape of the dimples underneath the saddlecloth. I thought it may be slightly uncomfortable on the horses’ backs for long periods of time, but I tested this saddlecloth over a few months on different horses and they never showed any signs of discomfort. It was very hard wearing and washed very well, never losing its shape or condition.

Harriet’s likes and dislikes

I liked how secure the saddle pad was, but did feel it created uneven pressure underneath the saddle with the grips as it wasn’t a smooth, flat surface.

Verdict

This wasn’t my favourite of the saddle pads I tested, but it was really secure and lasted well.

On trend in the saddle: The latest tack design innovations H&H Plus

Alex Robinson looks at what’s new in the world of tack and which of the latest design innovations could benefit you and your horse

As our scientific knowledge of the mechanics of the horse continues to grow, so does our insight into how outside influences, such as tack, impact movement and performance. With this in mind, saddlery manufacturers are constantly looking to improve, innovate and develop their products to help riders improve both their own and their horse’s performance.

Irrespective of which discipline you compete in, it’s imperative to have the correct gear so your horse is comfortable and able to perform at his best.

A saddle is one of the single biggest expenses for riding owners. If you buy a younger, growing horse you can guarantee an upgrade will be needed in a couple of years. The Ideal Saddle Company’s Technical and Traditional (T&T) saddle could be a solution for those who would rather not have the financial demands of purchasing a completely new saddle when the current one no longer fits. It is available in four models (dressage, cross-country, showjumping and general purpose) and has an adjustable design so it can be easily altered for the growth of a youngster, the arrival of a new horse or during the changing seasons when your horse’s shape might develop.

Albion also produces a saddle that can be adjusted according to the horse. The Adjusta-Tree enables the tree to be altered by two fitting widths, without being removed from the saddle. It has been robustly engineered to withstand loading and pressure-induced spread, tested and proven by a specialist independent engineering laboratory.

Albion say the Adjusta-Tree is the only wooden adjustable tree on the market. Albion founder and director of design Paul Belton is considered by many international and Olympic riders, such as Laura Tomlinson, to lead the most innovative saddle designers in the world.

“My loyalty to the Albion brand is based on the sophisticated feel that each saddle innovation since 1996 has given me,” says Laura, who uses the Adjusta-Tree with Albion’s Revelation model.

Enhance the horse’s performance

If you’re in search of a jump saddle to improve your showjumping rounds then the Victrix from Bates could be for you. The lightweight saddle – which event rider Sarah Bullimore uses – promises to enhance the horse’s performance by giving them freedom of movement at the shoulder while absorbing impact on landing.

“Showjumpers have never been so close to their horse,” says a Bates spokesman. The company’s compact and low profile saddle, made from luxe leather, is designed to create a close-contact feel. “Riders particularly rave about the seat of the Victrix as the way it is balanced means they can stay with their horse’s movement. The lower leg is stable so the rider’s hands remain light and in command.”

Other features which aid both horse and rider comfort include an adjustable ergonomic stirrup bar and a streamlined girth point attachment.

When it comes to dressage saddles, British dressage star Lottie Fry rides in Amerigo’s Pasubio Masterclass saddle on one of her top horses, Glamourdale.

“It’s such a comfy saddle and it gives his shoulders more room to move,” says Lottie.

Made from Italian leather, the Pasubio model can benefit wider horses. The wooden spring tree is made with a wider gullet for greater wither freedom.

Charlotte Dujardin opts to compete in the World Class monoflap dressage saddle from Fairfax, which has been subject to rigorous scientific testing. The design of the saddle’s knee block, combined with the configuration of the seat, means the rider has a more evenly distributed seat pressure and their pelvis can remain in a neutral position for longer.

“It allows the rider to feel more balanced and ‘at one’ with their horse,” explains Vanessa Fairfax of the saddle, which has seven flap lengths and seat-size options to suit the individual rider’s anatomy. “Scientists used 3D motion capture gait analysis to identify and track both the horse and rider’s individual movement patterns. Researchers demonstrated that a more symmetrical and balanced rider enhances the horse’s spinal stability and range of motion. When the rider is sitting with a neutral pelvis and an even seat pressure distribution, the horse’s freedom of movement increases, with improved carpal, elbow and hock flexion.”

“It’s so important that we keep up to speed with scientific research so we are using products that will allow our horses to train and perform at their best,” says Charlotte.

Don’t forget to girth up

A functioning, well-fitting girth is vital to performance, but is often the piece of tack which gets overlooked.

“Girthing is a vital part of creating a good saddle fit, but can be paid too little attention,” says WOW Saddles’ Felicity Norrie. The Soft H-girth from WOW is tailored for the sensitive horse with its soft leather and choice of configurations.
“By dispersing pressure over the sternum, it promotes better movement in front while keeping the saddle back in place on horses with a forward girth groove, without over-tightening,” adds Felicity.
“The two straps are interchangeable; the front and back straps can be different lengths to suit the needs of the horse’s conformation. There are also different size sternum plates available. As not all riders need a martingale strap and D-ring for breastplate attachment, plates are available with and without these.”

New studies highlight the importance of biomechanics for horse and rider H&H Plus

The importance of rider biomechanics to horse and rider movement and welfare has come into the spotlight with a groundbreaking recent study, and a separate system based on crustacean vision.

Russell MacKechnie-Guire told H&H of his new researches into the effect of knee block design, while in an entirely separate project, Ilse Daly spoke of how investigating mantis shrimp led to her setting up Blackdog Biomechanics, a rider training system.

Dr MacKechnie-Guire explained his research, accepted for presentation at the British Equine Veterinary Association’s annual congress next year, shows that the design of the knee block plays a “crucial role” in allowing the rider’s pelvis to stay in the neutral position, which benefits the horse’s movement.

The researchers used three-dimensional motion-capture devices under the saddle to record spinal movement, pressure mats under the saddle and rider’s seat, and markers on the rider to record movement patterns – and on the horse to analyse gait. They compared elite-level dressage riders in a standard knee block and one with multiple layers, including shock-absorbing material, that allowed the knee more freedom.

They found the restriction caused by the standard block pushed the riders’ pelvis back, the seat bones moving from the lowest part of the saddle to the rise of the cantle.

“With the knee jammed into a big block, the rider is pushed back, hollowing their back as a result,” Dr MacKechnie-Guire said, adding that with the altered blocks, there was a 15% decrease in spinal rotation in the key T13 area of the horse’s back; increased rotation has been shown in studies to be related to spinal instability.

“The restriction destabilises the horse’s back, which makes sense, as the rider’s centre of mass isn’t aligned with the horse’s.”

The researchers also found increased lateral movement, or suppleness, of the back behind the saddle, which they believe allows better transfer of power from the hindlegs.

The riders all reported feeling more “in sync” with their horses in the altered blocks, which fitted with the fact their centres of mass were found each to be more aligned with their horses’.

Dr MacKechnie-Guire said: “Riders and trainers have always known that a rider with a neutral pelvis and evenly balanced seat is easier for the horse to carry, and this study shows there is indeed a significant effect on equine locomotion. Gait analysis showed an increased range of knee, elbow and hock flexion in the modified saddle.”

He added that while riders should not feel they must rush to buy new saddles or knee rolls, they should be aware of the issue when next having a saddle fitting or upgrade.

And he said the study shows once again the importance of biomechanics.

“It’s essential riders at all levels consider all factors,” he said. “I’m for ever talking about how horses will develop locomotor strategies to compensate for any pain or discomfort; they can feel a fly.

“If you’re out of balance, you create an asymmetric rotation around the horse’s central axis, it develops a strategy to compensate and that becomes normal. Then you may lose one bend – and pull the rein to try to manufacture it, but your steering wheel is turning your horse the other way.

“People need to work with their teams; vet, saddler, physio, coach, and consider every aspect.”

Tracking the rider in 3D

Dr Daly explained that her speciality is animal vision and that to study that of the mantis shrimp, whose eyes are on stalks and move in all directions, she conceived a system that would track vision in 3D. At the time, she was keeping her horse at a yard with no arena mirrors and could not afford training, but felt her upper body position needed improvement. She realised she could adapt her shrimp techniques to track her position.

After a great deal of work, she created a system of chessboard markers, worn by the rider, from which software can track every aspect of the rider’s position in 3D. A report is then generated on the spot, on what the issues are and how severe, and the rider can see herself as a 3D stick figure, to visualise her issues.

“It’s not intended to replace coaches, but to give riders more feedback and coaches help to see more,” Dr Daly said, adding that the programme identified an issue she had with one hip. Once corrected, she noticed freer movement in her horse.

“Positional issues can have such a huge impact,” she said. “What you do with your head, shoulders and hips makes massive changes; even a small shift in position can mean you’re not giving your horse the aids it needs.”

Dr Daly added that she is building a network of human and equine physios, so any issues can be referred to them and their feedback incorporated.

“I think we lag behind some sports in not being as joined-up, or using technology as much as we could,” she said. “I think technology can start to play more of a role in the equestrian world and I’m really excited about being part of that.”

The practice of fitting saddles slightly wider than ideal to allow horses more freedom of movement is having an opposite and detrimental effect, a study has found.

Researchers found using one tree width fitting narrower or wider than that set out in Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) guidelines had a negative impact on equine locomotion and musculature.

Russell MacKechnie-Guire of Centaur Biomechanics is one of the researchers who conducted the study, published in peer-reviewed journal Animals.“It’s been shown that a horse’s back dimensions increase with exercise, when ridden in a correctly fitted saddle, which in part has led to some people believing that fitting a saddle wider will allow the horse’s shoulders more movement, not restrict the horse and allow its back muscles to come up and work more effectively,” he told H&H. “We wanted to check that.”

The study involved 14 horses, to each of whom a saddle was fitted and independently checked by five SMS-qualified fitters. Each was then adjusted to one fitting wider and narrower and in all variations, pressure and movement were measured.

“For the layperson, it could make sense to fit wider, to allow the horse more movement, but we found the absolute opposite,” said Dr MacKechnie-Guire.

He explained that when a saddle is wider than ideal, it becomes unstable. During movement, the front of the saddle is pulled downwards, creating significantly high pressure at the base of the withers.

The researchers also found depressions in the horses’ musculature around the T13 vertebra – where the rider sits – believed to be caused by the high pressure from the saddle.

In the narrower fit, there was also increased pressure, but further back than in the wide saddle, and depressions in the musculature around the T18 vertebra.

Sensors along the spine found the vertebrae’s range of movement decreased in both the narrow and the wide saddles, compared to the ideal fit.

“The most important thing this highlights is the need for regular saddle fitting by a qualified fitter,” Dr MacKechnie-Guire said. “We showed changes to muscle dimensions and locomotion after 20 minutes of exercise; imagine what that would be like after six weeks.

“Horses adjust their movement to compensate for discomfort caused by a saddle that’s too narrow or wide, or not fitted correctly; those alterations in gait could lead to asymmetry, which is what we’re trying to reduce.

“If we fit correctly, the horse can function without hindrance; its back can be stable and transfer the propulsive force of the hind limbs to the front and aid locomotion. If it’s too wide or narrow, it forces the horse to adjust.”

Paper co-author Mark Fisher, one of the five fitters involved in the study, told H&H the results did not come as a surprise.

“We see a lot of saddles deliberately fitted wider, and you’re not going to get the same stability, especially in downwards transitions, lateral work and jumping – but you have to be able to back up what you’re saying with science,” he said.

“Having these sate-of-the-art pressure-mapping and motion analysis systems means we can back up opinions with facts, and riders of all levels can benefit.”

Mr Fisher agreed that the results emphasise the importance of regular saddle-fitting, adding: “It’s not just about people deliberately fitting too wide or narrow; they can become so in normal use, as horses change shape.

“I’ll often be fitting in a school where there’s a lesson going on and you hear the coach reminding the rider to sit up or get their lower leg under them – but they can’t because the saddle’s out of balance.

“I hope with this we can educate, and benefit horses and riders.”

SMS president Ted Boggis said: “The society contributed to funding this study as it addressed a commonly held but mistaken belief that wide-fitting saddles are kinder to the horse than saddles that conform to the shape of the horse’s back.

“The society, believing that the welfare of the horse is paramount, wanted undeniable evidence to ensure its saddle fitter training and advice to horse owners was correct. The results, including those for saddles that are too narrow, underline the importance of using an SMS registered qualified saddle fitter to fit or check the saddle on your horse.”

Reducing saddle pressure can increase flexion and power H&H Plus

Stride length and power can be improved if the pressure under racing exercise saddles is lessened, research has indicated.

A study comparing movement of horses on the gallops in full-, half- and three-quarter-tree saddles was carried out by Vanessa Fairfax of Fairfax Saddles, Russell Mackechnie-Guire of Centaur Biomechanics and Rachel Murray of Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons, and published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science.

The aim was to measure and locate any pressure under the saddles, and assess and measure the horses’ movement, then do the same in a saddle designed to remove or reduce the pressure.

Ms Fairfax told H&H studies had shown reducing pressure on the 10th to 13th thoracic vertebrae improved movement in sport horses, so she wanted to see if the same were true in racehorses.

“That area, the base of the withers, is a massive muscle junction,” she said. “Impingement affects the neck, head carriage, legs. I thought we’d find it in the racehorses, too — and we did, with bells on.

“It affected dressage and jumping horses differently but in both, it reduces movement and lumbar function, and the horse uses itself in a compromised way. The more I look at horses, the more I realise everything is connected; you can never look at just one part of the horse.”

Ms Fairfax said there had been little research in this area, and that as most racehorses’ ridden work is in exercise saddles, if they exert pressure that compromises movement, this will affect horses’ musculature and performance.

She said the researchers used pressure-mapping and high-speed motion capture simultaneously, to analyse pressure under the saddles and, using gait analysis data, the effect on the horses’ limb function and movement, on a sand track used for daily exercise.

She said the pressure under the standard saddles was “through the roof”, in the crucial area, higher than in the sport horses, and than that associated with back pain.

The different standard saddles caused high pressure in different areas, Ms Fairfax added, while under the new design, pressure was significantly lower.

It was also found the horses’ limb movement was significantly greater in the modified saddle.

“With the hip flexion, two degrees of difference is significant; we were seeing seven or eight,” Ms Fairfax said, adding that horses also showed significantly increased stride length and femur angle, indicating increased hindlimb flexion.

“The horses used themselves much more productively, and the potential benefits to welfare and performance are exciting.”

Dr Mackechnie-Guire said he found the results fascinating.

“Pressure alters gait in a negative way, and we’ve shown it in dressage horses, jumpers and now racehorses,” he told H&H. “We don’t know if these pressures cause pain but we know horses alter gait to compensate, and that’s key. They do so to alleviate discomfort.”

Mr Mackechnie-Guire cited horses who become reluctant to go forward, or stiff on one rein.

“Horses will perform sub-optimally and develop strategies to manage their locomotion in light of this pressure,” he said. “We’re not saying a saddle will turn a horse into Valegro, but remove that pressure and you’ve got a whole different experience.”

Trainer Chris Bealby of North Lodge Racing, whose horses were used in the study, told H&H he could feel a difference in the modified saddle.

“They definitely move better and more freely,” he said.

“I’ve been using them for a year now, and horses who came back into work this autumn seem to be working and moving better, having had less pressure on their backs, and they’re having less physio treatment, as back issues crop up less,” he said.

“We had a great record last season — 16 runs with two horses, five wins and five seconds. Maybe I shouldn’t be telling other people about this, but keeping it to myself.”

Q: “Do I need a dressage saddle? I would like to know how far people go before biting the bullet and upgrading their GP (general purpose) saddle to a dressage one. Basically I’d love a dressage saddle but can’t justify one, even a cheapish second hand one will cost me six months’ worth of lessons and I know how much more I will gain from the lessons. We’re off to out first big dressage in a couple of weekends, at novice level, and I’ll be amazed if many others will be doing it in a GP (let alone on a big daft cart horse!), but would a dressage saddle make that much difference?”

A: I would say that you probably don’t need a dressage saddle if you are doing well in the saddle that you already have and I’d keep going as you are.

I use jump saddles on my young event horses until they are at novice level eventing and I’ll use a dressage saddle when I have to do sitting trot as it helps support your position.

If you are getting marked down for your position, then it might be worth trying a dressage saddle. But if there’s no other reason than feeling slightly out of place because everyone else has a dressage saddle, stick to the GP!

It sounds like you are doing the right thing anyway — spending your money on lessons and improving that way. I’d keep doing this and enjoy what you are doing.

Don’t worry about the saddle until you are at the stage when you need it and you’ll know when that is because you won’t be able to perform certain movements if you don’t have the support that a dressage saddle gives you.

Q: “Do I need a jumping saddle? I was just wondering if it is beneficial for riders to use a jumping saddle when jumping up to a maximum height of 90cm please? Is there a difference between using a GP (general purpose) saddle and a jumping one?”

A: If you are comfortable in your saddle, your lower leg feels secure and in a good position, you are in balance with your horse, and your trainer hasn’t suggested otherwise, I’d say you’re fine jumping in a GP saddle at this height.

Jumping saddles typically have a very forward cut, close contact design and a flatter seat to allow greater freedom of movement for the rider when in the jumping position. The saddle seat will influence your ability to sit properly and in balance and to be able to give good aids to the horse, so that the exercises are harmonious. A jumping saddle will also naturally encourages you to sit in a relaxed two point seat with forward soft hands allowing the horse to move and jump freely.

If you are not sure, consider the following:

Does your leg hang comfortably and loosely straight down?
Does your flap allow your leg to support you in a two-point position over the jump?
Is the saddle flap long enough to avoid having your boot top catch on it?
Can you rise to the trot comfortably?
Are the stirrup bars in the correct position to allow you to achieve the shoulder-hip-heel straight line?
Is your knee comfortably placed on the flap or is it angled outwards?

You could also ask for some advice from an expert who can look at you while you are riding and see whether a jumping saddle might beneficial. So, without seeing you it really depends. If budget is an issue, and you do feel comfortable, you are probably doing just fine in your GP.

Riders are more stable in saddles without flaps, study finds

Riders have greater stability in saddles without flaps, a new study has claimed.

US researchers collected data from five dressage horses ridden in their own conventional saddles and a flapless saddle provided by EQ Saddle Science.

The conventional, treed saddles featured two flaps — a sweat flap next to the horse’s ribcage where the girth straps lay and a second flap over which the stirrup leathers hang.

The flapless saddle goes one further than a monoflap design, separating the rider’s legs from the horse with a saddlepad only.

The horses used in the study were three European warmbloods, one thoroughbred-warmblood cross, and one Lusitano, all of which were ridden by their regular professional riders to reduce variability in the data.

Each horse was ridden in the flapless saddle twice in the three days prior to the study to allow them to get used to the feel.

Measurements of the horses’ speed and stride length were taken in collected and extended walk, trot and canter and the data between the saddles was compared. A pressure matt (60hz) was also used underneath the saddle to measure the rider’s weight distribution.

While no difference was shown between the stride length or speed in the different saddles, the rider showed less movement in the flapless design.

“Compared with the conventional saddle, the flapless saddle was associated with significant reductions in range of motion of the rider’s centre of pressure in the mediolateral direction [side to side] in all gaits and in the anteroposterior [front-back] direction in collected trot, extended trot and extended canter,” said the study’s authors Hilary M Clayton, Alexandra Hampson, Peter Fraser, Arlene White and Agneta Egenvall.

“The improved stability was thought to result from the absence of saddle flaps allowing the rider’s thighs to lie in more adducted positions, which facilitated the action of the lumbopelvic-hip musculature in stabilising and controlling translations and rotations of the pelvis and trunk.

“The closer contact between rider and horse may also have augmented the transfer of haptic [sense of touch and proprioception] information.”

The study concluded that the use of a flapless saddle particularly improved rider stability in the mediolateral direction and that anterior-posteria movements were better controlled.

“[It was] most notable in trot in which large longitudinal braking and propulsive forces are applied,” it said.

Innovative new equine fitness tracker wins award

A horse fitness tracker that can also be used to detect problems with gait has been launched in the UK, receiving a highly commended award at the BETA International trade fair.

The Estride can be used with one, two or four nodes that are fitted to boots on the horse’s legs and collect data on training time, stride count, gait pattern, session regularity, horse stability and calorie burn for both horse and rider.

Utilising machine learning algorithms, the equipment is able to “learn” from the horse’s stride patterns to build up a pattern of consistency. When used with all four nodes, the tracker will flag early indications of changes to the stride, making it a useful tool for rehabilitation.

The device has been invented by Chichester-based leisure rider and analytics specialist Arpan Bhatia, who has also created a pressure sensing mat — the Estride harmony — to feed back data on saddle fit.

The two devices can be used together to show the impact of saddle and rider on the horse’s way of going.

The harmony device is the first time a pressure sensor has been available at a price point aimed at home users, and employs 920 sensors to capture data as fast as every 200miliseconds while a horse is being worked.

“There are similar devices out there but they are not quite the same — at this point no one else is really using stride-related algorithms. The other mats that are available are 10 times more expensive and haven’t evolved over the past 10 years, even though the technology has moved on,” said Arpan, who been working on the products for the past year-and-a-half, along with a team of 15 others.

“I made it because I bought a new horse and the saddle it came with wasn’t right. A saddler came in and helped me, but couldn’t give me evidence of why the existing saddle was a problem and I needed to spend £2,000 on another one.

“Using the mat and tracker together, you can check the stride patterns between two different saddles and have biomechanical evidence of a problem. If the horse is skipping or missing a beat, and the saddle is OK, then you might have an inherent problem with the horse,” he explained.

Both devices sync data to a cloud via an app, with the information accessible from anywhere in the world. Users can also input data on the types of surfaces they are riding on to build an accurate picture.

“Everyone likes to use a smart watch fitness tracker and horses are as expensive and important as anything else,” said Arpan, who describes himself as “a lover of data”, with a background working in analytics for media, government and military.

“Even if you just use the tracker for hacking every day, it can record useful information on stride and calorie burn — I have a mare who is a bit fat at the moment and I know what I need to do to control her diet. I’ve use data from various research papers based on breed, age, sex and weight to assess calorie burn and we might also create a calorie consumption model going forwards,” he added.

“We had good feedback at BETA and the Society of Master Saddlers were interested. We also have a couple of vets trialling it at the moment,” he said. “I could see the mat being used by individual yard owners with one mat for every yard — every season horses change shape and it would be useful to check saddle fit.”

The tracker comes with an option on the number of nodes and costs between £299 (with one node) and £599 (with four nodes), while the harmony pressure mat has an introductory price of £349. Both devices are available on pre-order, with a six to eight week wait on the tracker and a 12 week wait on the mat.

Tack worth thousands stolen: police urge owners to act

Thousands of pounds worth of tack has been stolen in two high-value burglaries in Kent.

Between 8.30pm on 8 June and 8am on 9 June, burglars broke into an outbuilding at a farm in West Farleigh, Maidstone, and took “a number of” saddles and bridles.

Another burglary was also reported to police at 2.25am on 13 June.

The thieves broke through padlocks used to secure the gate and outbuildings at a Staplehurst farm and stole 30 saddles and 30 bridles.

Police are urging owners to mark their tack and check their security.

“While it is impossible to prevent all burglaries and theft of horse equipment, owners can take steps to help prevent this and to make it harder for criminals to steal and sell on equipment,” said sergeant Darren Walshaw of Kent Police’s rural task force.

“Kent Police works closely with Kent HorseWatch, which offers a wealth of advice and support as well as prevention events where riding equipment can be marked.

“They also help to coordinate events such as freeze-marking for horses so it is really worth looking them up online to find out more.”

Leading saddlery firm resurrected

One of Britain’s oldest saddlery brands is being relaunched under a new name.

Barnsby Equestrian had been in financial difficulties and went into administration this summer.

The Walsall-based firm was set up in 1873 and was formerly known as Jabez Cliff Limited.

When the company went under, the directors hoped the “strength and reputation” of the Barnsley saddles would enable the brand to continue.

Now fellow Walsall saddler, Ideal & WRS has bought all the saddle tree manufacturing equipment from the administrator of Barnsby assets.

The new Barclay & Co saddle range will use the same patterns and saddle trees as Barnsby.

The company has resurrected the Barclay & Co label that had been used in the Canadian market and has registered the saddle tree brand Beebee & Beebee used by Barnsby.

James Hitchen, former managing director of Jabez Cliff & Co, has joined the team at Ideal.

“The Barclay & Co saddle range will be uniquely similar to the Barnsby range as they will be built on exactly the same saddle trees,” he said.

“The most notable aesthetic difference will be the Barclay & Co saddle nails and plates,” he added.

The 17 models in the new range represent the bulk of Barnsby’s product portfolio across all equestrian disciplines.

The Barclay & Co range will include the pony saddle, the VSS, the Schockemohle and Milton jumping saddles and Kanter and Majestic dressage saddles.

All the saddles will be manufactured in-house across both of Ideal & WRS’s factories under production director Shaun Marsland.

The Barclay & Co saddles will be sold to the trade for exactly the same prices as the original Barnsby range.

Equipe introduces new dressage saddle

Italian brand Equipe has added a new dressage saddle to its range.

The Olympia, the company says, has been ergonomically designed to put riders in the “best riding position”.

The saddle’s launch comes on the back of the success of their Emporio saddle, or the “Charlotte” as it’s also known because it was used by Charlotte Dujardin at the 2012 Olympics.

Crafted exclusively in house and individually finished in luxurious Italian leather, the Olympia is said to have all the benefits of the Emporio saddle used by the world’s number one dressage rider.

Its innovative synthetic saddle tree and flat structure of the seat allows the rider to sit closer to the horse to enhance comfort. The saddle uses a block and flap system with specially designed knee-rolls, a firm favourite with many top equestrians, as it gives an effective riding stance.

Be aware of scams as second-hand sales boom [H&H VIP]

Research undertaken by H&H has shown that 77% of readers have bought second-hand or pre-owned equestrian items.

The most common items include rugs, stable equipment and clothing, with the majority stating that “value for money” is the primary reason for choosing second-hand items over new products.

“I have two horses and have barely bought anything brand new as it was too expensive to buy new at the time,” said H&H reader Philippa Grainger.

Fellow reader Jackie Alexander added: “Horsey items are usually very dear so, particularly in the current economic climate, everyone is looking to save money where we can. I’m sure that this is a growing trend.”

It looks as if the second-hand market is set to increase, as 49% of the readers questioned who had not already bought used items said they would do so in the future.

Brands are best

Well-known and luxury brands tend to fare best on the second-hand market, with owners trusting their quality.

Tricia Bracegirdle, senior saddle technician for Childéric Saddles UK, told H&H that the company sees a strong appetite for already used products.

“From our perspective, our bespoke saddles are selling well but we too have noticed a growing demand in second-hand saddles,” she said.

The increase has led to the company offering anyone who has indirectly bought a second-hand Childéric saddle a check and advice for a fee of £75 — with £35 of the cost being donated to the Animal Health Trust.

“As the second-hand marketplace continues to flourish, we need to ensure that these saddles fit the horses in order to avoid discomfort and muscle and nerve damage,” added Ms Bracegirdle.

Second-hand side saddles are often more popular than new ones.

“The good old name saddles are still highly sought after, due to the quality and workmanship,” said an H&H reader. “I would buy a 1920/1930s side saddle in a heartbeat over most brand new side saddles available.”

Earlier this year the Side Saddle Association put out a call for second-hand saddles to be made available due to a “desperate need” for equipment (news, 24 July).

Dangers of second-hand purchasing

Although there are many upsides to buying second-hand, precautions must be taken to avoid fraud.

H&H reader Nicola Strong had to threaten to take a case to the small claims court after she transferred more than £200 but never received her goods from someone on a Facebook group.

The seller claimed that Royal Mail had lost the package and refused to give Ms Strong a refund.

“Shortly after the seller received the initial letter informing her that she would be taken to the small claims court if the situation were not rectified, I received a cheque through the post for the full amount,” said Ms Strong.

“Thankfully I had kept all the messages, and took screen shots of them. If I hadn’t kept the evidence it would have been more difficult as it would have been my word against hers.

“Lesson learnt though now — if I am not collecting in person — I would only buy an item using PayPal so that at least you are offered buyer protection.”

H&H products editor and eBay addict Alice Collins warns purchasers to be cautious.

“The second-hand market is booming, but I’d advise exercising caution on two fronts,” she said.

“Firstly, I would recommend only buying from websites where there is some sort of buyer guarantee and/or dispute resolution mechanism. Secondly, avoid buying items where damage may not be obvious to the naked eye, for example helmets.”

Amerigo launches two new dressage saddles

Saddle manufacturer Amerigo has launched two new dressage saddles.

The saddles — the Vega Dressage Siena and Close Contact Dressage Siena — are part of Amerigo’s Vega line.

Made from soft calfskin leather, the saddles have a new soft knee roll to allow for a relaxed and free, but efficient leg position.

“The Vega Dressage Siena and Close Contact Dressage Siena have been developed on the back of the success of the existing Siena saddles in the Amerigo line.

“These new saddles incorporate a synthetic tree to offer total balance and optimal coordination of movement for both horse and rider — making them an excellent choice for riders of all levels,” said a company spokesman.

Riders’ saddles stolen at Blenheim

A spate of saddlery thefts from the stables at Blenheim Horse Trials last weekend (10-14 September) left several eventers begging and borrowing tack in order to complete the competition.

Several top riders’ saddles were stolen from on the Saturday night of the event, including those belonging to Germany’s Bettina Hoy (pictured) and Dutch rider Tim Lips.

Bettina Hoy had her “favourite” jumping saddle stolen from a tack trunk.

She told H&H: “It was one of the Hoy saddles that Passier used to make. There aren’t many of them left and it will be impossible to replace as Passier does not make them anymore.

“It happened in the middle of the night when the stable area is supposedly secure and no-one is allowed in unless there is an emergency.”

Bettina borrowed fellow competitor Kirsty Johnston’s Devoucoux saddle for her showjumping round on Designer 10. She went on to complete in 18th place.

Tim Lips had both his dressage and cross-country saddles taken at the same time. H&H understands these were not locked away.

Blenheim director Mandy Hervieu said that as well as having all-night security patrols in place, there was also CCTV in the stable area.

She added that the theft appeared to have been both well planned and carefully executed.

It is still not clear whether the thieves came from outside the event.

CCTV footage is being examined, and a girth left behind by the thieves, is being tested for fingerprints.

‘Saddle-slip’ is a cause of back pain in riders

Back pain in horse riders can be caused by ill-fitting saddles, according to a second study released by the Saddle Research Trust (SRT).

Earlier this year, Dr Sue Dyson and Line Greve of the Animal Health Trust (AHT) linked back problems and lameness in horses to “saddle-slip”. Now their findings show why riders may be suffering from it.

Thirty-eight per cent of 205 riders who responded to a questionnaire had back pain. In the clinical assessment this was associated with ill-fitting saddles and either a reduced airborne phase of the step of the horse in all four limbs or a stiff, stilted canter, suggesting pain.

Ill-fitting saddles were identified in 43% of horses, with saddle-slip observed in 14.6% and significantly associated with hind limb lameness or gait abnormalities.

However, only two riders had made the connection.

The research also flagged-up rider crookedness. Saddles that fitted well were often found to be the ones regularly checked, while horses ridden by experts were less likely to have asymmetry of the back.

“Ideally, saddle-fit should be checked more often than once a year,” said Line Greve. “Yet this isn’t the whole solution because, worryingly, 30% of horses that had their saddles checked at least once yearly still had an ill-fitting saddle. What is unknown is whether these saddles had ever fitted correctly, or whether a properly qualified saddle fitter was responsible.”

Half of all sport horses are lame, survey finds

A new saddle study has shown an unexpectedly high degree of lameness in sport horses — with nearly half of those assessed being lame or stiff.

Dr Sue Dyson, head of clinical orthopaedics at the Animal Health Trust (AHT) and Line Greve, a PhD student, looked at 506 working sport horses. They were all assumed by their owners to be sound.

The horses were videoed in-hand and ridden, including in 20m circles in both trot and canter. The study showed 46% of horses were lame or had a stiff, stilted canter.

Dr Dyson said she was “shocked” by the results.

Saddle slip occurred in 12% of all the horses studied — mainly in those with hind limb (30%) as opposed to forelimb lameness (5%).

“The results showed that horses with hindlimb lameness and gait abnormalities are more than 50 times more likely to have saddle slip than other horses,”said Line Greve.

With nearly half of those studied being lame, Ms Greve said many horses with lameness “are clearly going unnoticed”.

She added that the study shows further education of riders and trainers is needed to help them identify saddle slip as an indicator of lameness.

The new study reinforces previous research published in 2012, which showed hindlimb lameness is often the cause of saddle slip (news, 25 October 2012 and vet, 13 December 2012).

That study, carried out on horses at the AHT, concluded the saddle consistently slipped to the side in 54% of horses with hindlimb lameness.

Anne Bondi, director of the Saddle Research Trust — which supported the AHT in both studies — says all riders should be aware their horses might not be as sound as they assume.

“Saddle slip can be an early warning of a problem with a horse,” she warned.

The full results of the study will be presented at the second Saddle Research Trust International Conference, held on 29 November at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.

‘My saddle saved my life’ says injured rider

A rider has credited her spring tree saddle with saving her life after her horse fell and rolled on her.

Dorset-based Ruth Revel was out hacking on the downs last month (18 February), when her horse spooked.

“Earnie jumped in the air, and as he landed his back feet hit greasy ground and his back legs slipped right underneath him,” she said. “I was sitting very securely in my Albion K2 saddle as he came down backwards on top of me and rolled off my left side.

“The back of my saddle took the full force as my horse trapped me within that triangle that allowed me to get away with just bruising.”

Ruth was airlifted to hospital, but thanks to the saddle taking the force of the fall, she was discharged just “bruised and bashed”. Earnie is tight through his back and having a short rest, but is otherwise ok.

“Were it not for the flexibility and strength of my Albion, I would have been quite squashed,” she said. “The cantle is broken at 90° but is absolutely solid.”

Although the saddle looks a complete write-off, Albion has suggested it may need only a new tree as the leather itself is not damaged, just twisted.
