How often you really need to have your saddle checked, plus advice from a Society of Master Saddlers master saddle fitter

Booking a saddle fitting and getting your horse’s saddle checked is something all horse owners should be doing regularly, but it can fall by the wayside until there’s an issue. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got a second-hand GP saddle, a custom-made dressage saddle or something in between, good saddle fit is essential to your horse’s welfare.

We asked Ruth Spencer, a master saddle fitter who also serves on the board of Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) assessors, to explain how often you really need to get your saddle checked and answer some other need-to-know questions about saddle fitting.

How often should you get your saddle checked?

As a general rule, saddles should be checked at least every six to 12 months.

“This is in line with guidance from the Society of Master Saddlers,” Ruth explains, “however, it isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Horses in regular work, young horses, those changing shape through training, or those coming back into work after time off may need more frequent checks.

“In contrast, a mature horse in consistent, light work with a stable condition may be fine with annual checks – but it’s important not to become complacent, as subtle changes can still occur over time,” she warns.

What factors affect saddle fit?

A horse’s shape is not static, so saddle fit can change for a variety of reasons, but riders can also affect how the saddle fits and performs, Ruth explains.

These factors include:

changes in horse weight
muscle development (or loss)
fitness levels
age
workload
seasonal factors, such as availability of grazing
changes in rider weight
rider position or balance

Additionally, the saddle itself can alter over time through flocking compression, wear or tree movement.

What can owners do between checks to ensure good fit?

There are several simple but effective checks owners can do regularly, Ruth reveals.

You should look for:

Even contact and balance – the saddle should sit level and not tip forward or back
Clearance and symmetry – check there is adequate clearance over the withers and that the saddle sits evenly on both sides
Horse’s way of going – monitor changes in performance, willingness, or behaviour under saddle

“Consistently running your hands under the panels and observing your horse before and after work can help you pick up early signs of change,” she advises.

Signs a saddle doesn’t fit as well as it should

Common indicators include:

uneven sweat patterns
dry patches
ruffled hair under the saddle
reluctance to be tacked up
resistance under saddle
hollowing
change in performance
muscle wastage
soreness
sensitivity when grooming around the saddle area

Who can check saddle fit?

Owners should look for a fitter qualified through the SMS, such as a qualified saddle fitter (QSF). This ensures they have undergone recognised training, assessment, and adhere to professional standards. You can find more information about saddle fitting qualifications at mastersaddlers.co.uk.

Ruth adds that “ongoing professional development and insurance are also important indicators of a reputable practitioner”.

Regarding specific brands, Ruth says that a well-qualified, independent saddle fitter should be able to assess a wide range of saddles.

“Some brands do have specific design features, however, so a fitter with experience or training in that brand can be beneficial in some cases,” she adds.

“Ultimately, the priority should be the fitter’s qualifications, experience, and ability to work objectively in the horse’s best interest.”

How long does a standard saddle fit check take?

A standard saddle check typically takes 45–90 mins. It should include assessing the horse statically and in motion, templating, evaluating the saddle on and off the horse, checking flocking and balance, and observing the rider where possible.

Any necessary adjustments, such as flocking, may be carried out on the day or scheduled for a later date.

How much does saddle fitting cost?

As with many costs of keeping a horse, prices can vary depending on location and the level of service, Ruth explains, but costs “typically range from around £50 to £100 for a standard check, with additional costs for adjustments such as reflocking”.

She advises that it is always worth clarifying what’s included in the fee before booking an appointment.

“I struggle to find someone willing to check a saddle they haven’t sold me” – any advice?

Ruth agrees that this is a common frustration, but says “there are good fitters who will assess any saddle objectively”.

She suggests searching the SMS register to find qualified professionals in your area.

“When contacting fitters, be upfront about your needs – many will offer a check-and-advice service even if you’re not looking to purchase. Building a relationship with a trusted fitter over time can also make future appointments easier,” says Ruth.

“It’s worth remembering that an ethical, professional fitter’s priority should always be the welfare of the horse, regardless of where the saddle was purchased.”

Deal secures leading British equestrian brands to ‘give them the future they deserve’

Leading saddlery manufacturer Bliss of London has acquired Jeffries Saddlery, Harry Dabbs and Vale Brothers, in a deal hoped to “give these brands the future they deserve”.

H&H reported that Vale Brothers, whose brands included Thermatex, as well as Harry Dabbs and Jeffries Saddlery, had gone into administration in 2023, and that its brands had been bought by part of the Baaj Capital group last year.

Bliss of London has now acquired “three of the most respected names in British equestrian manufacturing: E Jeffries Saddlery, Harry Dabbs, and Vale Brothers”.

“Finalised late last week, the acquisition from Baaj Capital ensures that these iconic brands will continue to be produced in Walsall, maintaining their legacy in the traditional home of English saddle-making,” a Bliss of London spokesperson said.

“Bliss of London’s purchase secures the brand identities and product heritage, and represents a significant step in strengthening its growing portfolio.”

The company’s managing director Nikki Newcombe said the deal was a very exciting development, for the company and the equestrian industry.

“These are iconic names with a rich legacy, and we are proud to bring them under the Bliss umbrella,” she said. “We’re fully committed to preserving their heritage while offering the high standards of service and craftsmanship that Bliss is known for.”

Ms Newcombe said recent years have been challenging for saddle-fitters and customers, but that the Bliss team is “already working on re-establishing production and support”.

“We know there is work to do, but we’re confident that with our team and infrastructure, we can revive these brands and give them the future they deserve,” she said.

The acquisition does not include any trading liabilities or outstanding orders from previous ownership. Bliss is “actively inviting existing and new saddle-fitters to get in touch regarding future opportunities and collaboration”.

Jeffries Lifestyle Ltd, the holding company created in the 2023 Vale Brothers administration, continues to trade independently and retains the Thermatex and Griffin NuuMed brands.

William Fox-Pitt says ‘It must be the right thing’ about ‘game-changing’ directory of tack fitters

An independent database of verified saddle, bridle and bit fitters has launched with the hope of being a “game-changer” for owners and benefiting horse welfare.

The Equine Fitters Directory is a searchable list of professionals who meet certain criteria and have applied to be on – and been accepted into – the directory.

It was launched on 3 February at Saddlers’ Hall in London by the Equine Fitters Council, an independent, not-for-profit company established by the Worshipful Company of Saddlers and the Worshipful Company of Loriners.

To be eligible, fitters must meet the qualification and experience requirements set out, hold insurance, pursue continuing professional development and agree to abide by the code of conduct and complaints procedure. Fitters can also be delisted from the directory.

“We have an absolute duty, more than ever, to do our best for our horses,” said Hugh Thomas, Equine Fitters Council chairman.

“A well-fitting saddle, bit, bridle or harness is essential to their comfort and overall wellbeing. When fit is correct, horse and rider are comfortable, confident and able to work without issue. Working with a competent and professional fitter helps owners make informed decisions, but above all, be confident that they are looking after their horses’ wellbeing and welfare.

“I want to emphasise that we very much see that fitters are part of a team, not just one more service provider brought in maybe once a year. They should be a key part of the regular care team of the horse alongside the obvious other people, long accepted vets, therapists, coaches and footcare professionals.

“Finding a professional, experienced fitter can feel overwhelming to the horse owner, but it shouldn’t. That is why we need this. The directory is designed to make it easy to search: compare fitters based on their location, their expertise, their specialisation, whether you need saddle, bridle, bit or harness fitter, so you can find the right practitioner for you and your horse.”

Mr Thomas added: “The key message of tonight is overwhelmingly aimed at horse owners: please look on the directory when you want a fitter. If you’ve got a fitter and they are not on the directory, ask them, ‘Why not?’”

In a panel discussion at the launch, World Horse Welfare chief executive Roly Owers said that when considering the involvement of horses in sport, the equestrian world has “a deep responsibility to ensure we are placing horse welfare above all else”.

“Equine fitters play such a fundamental role in that,” he said. “There’s a lot of noise out there, so to have an equine business directory to [help you] find someone you can really trust is going to be right for you and for your horse is a really huge step forward.”

William Fox-Pitt, who won 14 five-stars during his top-level eventing career, lent his support to the directory.

“We know that regularly checked and well-fitted tack both improve the welfare of our horses and their overall performance,” he said.

“I can reflect on numerous times in my career when even small alterations to match the ever-changing size and shape of my horse has made a fundamental difference. Having a ‘one-stop’ online directory that lists professional fitters that all riders and horse owners can trust must be the right thing.”

Dr Kathryn Nankervis, associate professor at Hartpury University, said that everyone who rides “would like to think their horse is comfortable” in the equipment we use, but research shows fit “isn’t always as good as it could be”.

“We have to try and raise the bar,” she said. “I’m really supportive of this initiative because anything that helps horse owners find a fitter and discover the benefits that optimal saddlery fit can bring has to be a good thing for owners and horses.”

‘We’ve got to listen to horses’: ‘MoT’ for horses proves beneficial

A panel of industry experts is putting the emphasis on teamwork by hosting “MoT” days for horses and riders.

Steph Bradley, a Society of Master Saddlers master saddle-fitter and British Horse Society accredited coach, started hosting performance clinics at her yard, Whitegate Farm and Livery in Cheshire, around two years ago. Riders bring their horses and for £390 they will see Steph, orthopaedic vet Mark Andrews, veterinary chiropractor Angela Holland, farriers Russell Novelli and Sam Crompton, Baileys nutritionist Caroline Dickens and human physio Donna Strachan.

The fee includes vet assessment, chiro and physio treatment, farrier report, saddle-fitting, and rider symmetry assessment. If the horse needs any shoeing or veterinary treatment this is charged separately.

Steph told H&H the aim was to bring experts together in one place to help horses and riders.

“Sometimes a horse might have a niggle and the owner struggles to get to the bottom of it. They can end up going round the houses as they go through that checklist. So we thought if we could have a day where we all get together it would be really beneficial,” she said.

“Riders are given an appointment, but we tell people generally to block the day out to allow for extra treatment or assessment. For example if the farriers decide to try the horse with a pad and want to reassess it, or the saddle needs to be flocked and we want to watch the horse and rider again afterwards.”

Steph said they have had requests to take the clinic on the road, which they are unable to do as it is difficult to get days in the diary, but she would like to see more experts run similar days.

“When everyone can work together it really does get the best results for the horse and rider. It’s not rocket science, but it works well and we also learn from each other,” she said.

“I think there should be more clinics like these because horses, and their owners, will benefit so much from them. We’ve got to listen to horses, and it can be difficult when there’s just one snapshot and they’re seen under these different guises, whereas if we see them together it really helps.”

Steph added that although the clinics are labelled as performance, they are open to all horses and riders, and are like an “MoT”.

“We’re trying to enhance performance, but this applies to happy hackers too. People might think this is for performance horses, but it’s for everyone. It might be that a horse has a bit of discomfort, the rider is a little crooked, and the saddle is leaning to one side – and this can all be ironed out between us,” she said.

Weight issues and owners’ lack of knowledge among top concerns for saddlery fitters

Horse weight issues – and owners’ lack of knowledge – are among some of the biggest concerns for saddlery fitters, new data has suggested.

Redwings, the Horse Trust and the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) have published new data from a short survey of UK-based saddlery fitters. The survey was part of a project between the three organisations, who also launched an online course this summer for SMS members focusing on the role saddlery fitters play in observing and helping to resolve some of the issues that may affect horse welfare.

Of the 41 participants who completed the survey, 22.45% said the biggest welfare concern was horse weight issues – and the second biggest concern was owners’ lack of knowledge.

When asked which were the main issues they believed equine welfare organisations faced 15.49% of respondents said abandonment, followed by 13.04% who said obesity, and 11.59% inappropriate work/lameness.

More than half of the respondents said they were either extremely or somewhat likely to contact a welfare organisation if they were concerned about a horse. The most common reason given for being reluctant to contact a welfare organisation about a horse was compromising the relationship with their client, but 85.4% said client confidentiality would not prevent them from reporting cruelty or neglect.

“It’s so important to work with equine professionals, such as saddlery fitters, who have regular contact with horses and their owners and really have the opportunity to influence horse welfare in a positive way,” said Redwings chief executive Lynn Cutress.

Redwings campaigns manager Andie McPherson added the survey was the first of its kind and despite being a small sample, it delivered some “interesting insights” into saddlery fitters’ understanding of welfare priorities and the work of welfare charities in the UK.

“We would be delighted for more analysis to be carried out on the data and for it to inspire reflection on the important role equine professionals play in good equine welfare and how welfare organisations can work more closely with saddle fitters to tackle some of the pressing issues that they come across,” she said.

‘It’s a false economy’: owners urged not to scrimp on horse care as cost of living crisis continues

OWNERS have been urged not to cut corners in essential horse care as the cost of living crisis “starts to bite”.

Concerns continue around rising costs, but industry experts have warned that with horses, prevention is “better than cure” and veterinary treatment, hoof care and saddle fittings should not be scrimped on to save money.

British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) ethics and welfare committee chair Lucy Grieve told H&H horse ownership comes with a “degree of cost” that can only be “minimised so far”.

“There is a basic level of need that must be met for horses, including the obvious things like food, water, exercise and shelter. However, the needs that are addressed more intermittently are more easily “bumped’’ or postponed when money is tight, which can lead to serious problems that can be detrimental to the horse’s health and end up costing more money in the long run,” she said.

“Not keeping up to date with vaccinations puts your horse at risk from the potentially fatal disease, tetanus, and puts your horse and others at risk of an equine influenza outbreak.

“Worm control can easily get out-of-control and this is only realised when it is too late. It’s too easy to let routine testing slip and before you know it, there can be a significant worm problem that can cause internal disease and life-threatening colic.”

Ms Grieve added that routine dental care is also important to maintain.

“Dental problems are much easier to treat and manage if they are caught early. Once they are more advanced, it can be costly and invasive to treat them, and the horse can have been in significant pain before other signs, such as quidding, become apparent,” she said.

BEVA president Huw Griffiths told H&H the organisation is “keeping a careful eye” on the cost of living situation. He said owners can save money by considering things such as shared vet visits and planning routine treatment in advance.

“In veterinary medicine, prevention is better than cure – it is also much cheaper. Discuss routine treatments with your vet and create the best infrastructure for best effect, with least expenditure,“ he said. “Avoiding preventative healthcare will unfortunately likely lead to increased expenditure and reduced welfare long term.

“Most practices are familiar with clients who are struggling to make ends meet. The key to a successful outcome is honesty and communication. If you know you are going to struggle to pay the bill immediately, discuss this with your vet before the visit. It is likely they will be able to help in some way and even if they can’t, they will help you find the best outcome within your abilities.”

The Farrier Registration Council (FRC) has spoken about the importance of not reducing routine hoof care to save money.

“Extending the period between shoeing or trimmings might at first glance seem like a quick way to reduce the annual costs of foot care,” the FRC spokesman told H&H. “The average horse is generally shod approximately eight or nine times a year when on a six-week interval; increasing this to seven or eight weeks will usually save you one visit over the course of the year. This saving might equate to just around £2 a week.

“Leaving the same shoes on for longer might also increase the likelihood of a shoe being lost. This will result in a call-out from your farrier; given the cost of fuel and time, this will most likely cost more than you would have saved by delaying.

“Other pathological issues can range from corns and damaged hoof capsules all the way to tendon damage and joint issues. Routine costs are usually much less than the emergency, unexpected fees.”

Society of Master Saddlers master saddle fitter Steph Bradley of Freedom Saddlery told H&H that regular saddle fittings are one of the things that can often be overlooked by owners, and this has been exacerbated with the cost of living crisis.

“People might think, ‘I’ll leave that six months or have it done next year.’ They tend to think nothing is wrong, but it’s creating a false economy because often the things that are wrong, you can’t physically see,” she said.

“You might think everything is OK, but actually maybe something is starting to wear or some flock has gone asymmetrical. These minor adjustments can make such a big difference to the comfort, welfare and performance of the horse.

Ms Bradley, who is also a British Horse Society accredited coach, has dropped her saddle-fitting prices from £65 to £50 for three months to try to help clients – and those that book their next six-monthly appointment will also be entitled to the discount.

“I’m trying to think differently to try to encourage people to carry on having saddle fittings done because it’s an easy thing to drop off the routine management. I’m also offering an option of a 20-minute coaching session included in the price, so it gives owners a little bit more for what they’re paying.”

World Horse Welfare deputy chief executive Tony Tyler told H&H the charity is beginning to receive more calls from people seeking advice on how to rehome their horses owing to financial concerns.

“It’s more of a trickle than a stream at the moment, but that could very well change come autumn and winter. There are things owners can do to save money and still provide good care, but they should be aware of false economies – scrimping on vet, dental or farrier care is not recommended,” he said.

“We encourage owners to look at the advice produced by the National Equine Welfare Council on how to cut costs without cutting care. If an owner or someone they know is concerned or struggling, we urge them to contact us or another charity for advice.”

‘Exciting’ saddlery project aims to improve horse welfare, comfort and performance

An “exciting” industry-wide saddlery survey has been launched, with the aim of improving horse welfare, comfort and performance.

Hartpury University’s equestrian performance research centre is aiming to investigate equestrian professionals’ experiences and opinions on saddlery fit for horse and rider.

The Hartpury research team comprises equestrian performance research centre lead Kathryn Nankervis, Russell Mackechnie-Guire of Centaur Biomechanics and Hartpury head of research Jane Williams, working with colleagues from the Society of Master Saddlers. The team is inviting professionals from a wide variety of areas, including vets, physiotherapists, coaches, saddle-fitters, equine dental technicians and farriers, to take part in the survey.

Dr Nankervis said: “This research is hugely important as part of a wider goal in improving horse welfare, comfort and performance through better fitting saddlery. The results will be used by the Society of Master Saddlers, and we’d encourage everyone who is working in the field to take part in the survey.”

The team said the aim of the three-part questionnaire is to investigate how saddlery fit issues feature in an individual’s role as an equestrian professional supporting horse-rider partnerships, looking at factors that influence referrals to other professionals, and some common issues encountered when fitting tack.

“The survey takes around 10 minutes to complete, depending on the profession of the person completing it and all responses are totally anonymous,” Dr Nankervis said.

“By taking part, you’ll be contributing to an essential piece of research, helping to improve communications and working practice within the industry.”

Girth lengths: how to measure at home

Of all the essential parts of a horse’s saddlery, the girth is often the most overlooked item. Knowing how to measure a horse’s girth correctly is vital for your safety – this is not a piece of kit that you can muddle through if it’s a little on the small or large side.

The most straightforward method of making sure you buy the right size, is to measure your old girth if it fitted correctly, or – if it’s a new horse or a new saddle – to try a friend’s to see what length fits your saddle and horse best. Your girth should naturally fit around the middle hole of the straps, to allow room for tightening a few holes – going up evenly on each side – and also to be able to do it up gradually.

Girths are measured from end of buckle to end of buckle, i.e. the full length, and normally come in two-inch increments. However, taking your old girth into the shop will ensure there’s no guesswork. Bear in mind that old girths or ones with elastic can stretch over time. Also, if the girth’s buckles are set back, as on some dressage girths, it might measure slightly longer and affect which size of girth will fit correctly.

With long billet straps and a short girth, you should have about three fingers between the top of the girth and the bottom of the saddle pad. This will keep the saddle stable and helps avoid the straps pinching or the horse’s elbow hitting the buckles.

For a long girth, the buckles should not be so high under your thigh that they feel bulky – this means that the girth is on the long side. Ideally you should have at least two billet holes above and at least one below the buckles.

How to measure a horse’s girth at home

Find a piece of string of at least 60in long or a fabric tape measure. Place your saddle, pad and whatever else you normally use under your saddle on the horse in the usual position. Pass the piece of string or tape measure from the middle hole on one of the girth straps and pass the string under your horse, about four inches back from his elbow, to the corresponding girth hole on the other side. Measure the length of the string (or consult the tape measure) in inches and this is the size girth you need.

As a very general rule, the average 15–16hh horse will use a 46–48in long girth; and around 26in short girth. However, it depends a good deal on the saddle and type of girth as well as the horse’s breed and condition.

‘A visionary’: farewell to renowned to saddle-fitter

Ken Lyndon-Dykes, the former president of the Society of Master Saddlers died on 28 February, aged 81, following a short illness.

Born in York, Mr Lyndon-Dykes started flying, aged 16, and pursued his passion for aviation. Horses had always been a part of his life and early in his working life, he ran a trekking centre in Wales, then went on to work in publishing.

In 1972, he was involved in a life-changing plane crash during the British Air Race. He was told he would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, but he recovered and went into the saddlery industry. He also returned to riding and competed at national and international level in eventing with John Of Gaunt.

He started Kent Leather Distributors, which began in saddle mail-order. The business grew and he owned a chain of 56 outlets. He later sold it and set up the Kent-based company Saddleworld.

Mr Lyndon-Dykes was passionate about improving standards of saddle design and became renowned for his work and skills. He believed a correctly fitting saddle was fundamental to the wellbeing and success of the horse and rider. He supported many saddle-fitters in their careers and in the 1990s, was one of the course leaders for the Society of Master Saddlers saddle-fitting qualification.

He published a number of books on saddle fitting and in 2015 won the British Equestrian Trade Association lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the equestrian industry. He was a long-term supporter of the Society of Master Saddlers and held the role of president in 2016/17.

Mr Lyndon-Dykes’ son Andrew said his father “managed to fit so many lifetimes into one lifetime”, describing him as “extraordinary”. A spokesman for the Society of Master Saddlers said Mr Lyndon-Dykes was a “visionary” in the saddlery industry.

He is survived by his sister Janet and niece Victoria, his son Andrew and daughter-in-law Michelle, and grandchildren Rachel, Daniel and Ross.

New saddle-fitting group to provide alternative body

A new saddle-fitting association has been launched to provide an alternative professional body for the industry.

The Professional Saddle Fitters Association (PSFA), a not-for-profit organisation, has been founded with the core aim of “improving horse welfare and/or quality of life to a level that would assure the public ridden work can be as every bit enriching for the equine as it is for the rider”.

Full PSFA membership can be gained directly by those who are Society of Master Saddlers qualified saddle-fitters (SMSQSF), or those who hold the Netherlands-based Academy of Master Saddle Fitting Consultants (MSFC) or the Lantra-approved Horse1st saddle-fitting certificates. Fitters who have not done these courses, but who wish to be considered for full PSFA membership, must submit evidence that their “level of expertise” complies with the Occupational Standards for Saddle Fitters, produced by a working party reporting to the Saddle Fitting (Training & Qualifications) steering group, chaired by the Saddlers Company, before they will be accepted.

An associate membership is available for provisional applicants who are progressing towards compliance with the occupational standard and aim to progress to full PSFA membership, and there is also a trainee membership. PSFA members must not already be registered with a saddle-fitting professional body, owing to the fact they are “already professionally represented” for their fitting services, and to avoid “conflict of interest”.

Caroline Lindsay, PSFA vice-president and veterinary physiotherapist, told H&H the association aims to be inclusive by providing a professional body for those that are SMSQSFs or hold the MSFC or Horse1st certificates – but also for those who have chosen to follow a different pathway into the industry, and PSFA members will have access to continued professional development.

“The past decade has seen an explosion in equitation research which is bringing us ever closer to the need for professionals who can address the horse, saddle and rider combination by serving those separate elements as one complete unit,” she said.

“We wanted to support motivated professional saddle-fitters who had already committed to fulfilling that need. To do this we are providing them with the opportunity to build on their comprehensive levels of expertise with our networking and educational resources, as well as a platform from which they can represent themselves to the public as fully committed to their professional obligations.”

PSFA president Dean Woodward added that the association’s objectives are to offer more learning and advanced opportunities that will “nurture a culture of professionals committed to progressing their levels of customer relations and fitting expertise to achieve even higher standards of ridden horse welfare”.

“We were aware that there were many competent saddle-fitters out there that are undoubtedly providing an approach to fitting that aligns with the occupational standards for saddle-fitters and frequently beyond it,” he said.

“We are confident this resource will be welcomed by equestrians and, ultimately, allied equine and equitation practitioners seeking intervention from professionally competent saddle-fitters.”

A spokesman for the SMS told H&H the society is aware of the PFSA, but did not wish to comment.

Masks, Jim, but not as we know them: saddlers branch out into fantastic creations

Lots of people have been getting creative with mask-making over the past year — but none more so than members of the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS).

As the society’s national competition has been moved to September, committee member and master saddler Karen Schlotter came up with a new idea.

Members were asked to design and make a mask such as a carnival, masquerade or fancy dress wear, or an animal’s face, to be worn with a strap or mounted on a handle. Entries had to be made mainly of leather, but with “embellishments”. The aim was to show off the “many and varied skills of those in the saddlery trade”.

SMS chief executive Hazel Morley said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to those who entered and gave us a really interesting competition.

“All entrants really pushed the boat out and I was blown away by their imagination and ingenuity.”

The masks were judged first by SMS master saddler judges Mark Romain, Catherine Baker and Ms Schlotter, then went to a vote on Facebook. The results together gave the final outcome.

Jeff Barry won the open class with his “green man” creation.

He said: “The standard in the classes was superb. I was delighted to win the open class and it made all the effort so worthwhile.

“As it has been a bit quieter with the pandemic I decided to enter the competition and I made the mask on and off over a month. I saw an image of the Green Man and thought it would make a brilliant entry; I’m so pleased I did.”

Lucy Cushley finished second in the apprentices, trainee and intermediate members’ class with an entry titled Cernunnos, lord of wild things.

“The competition was just fantastic,” she said. “I was so pleased I decided to enter and the mask actually took me a whole week of 14-hour days.

“I just couldn’t stop making it. I found a picture in a book on ancient Celtic gods and that is where my inspiration came from, even if the end result didn’t turn out like the original image.”

The Saddlers’ Company donated the prizes, of £150, £100 and £50 in each category.

Patches of rubbed hair under the back panels of your horse’s saddle can be more prevalent at this time of year — here’s what you need to know...

It’s not unusual for owners to leave an unclipped area of hair under the saddle to give the horse some protection, particularly if they are thin skinned, but sometimes bald patches appear anyway. This could just be a coat change issue, says Joe Mackinder, a vet with Rainbow Equine Hospital near Malton, as the horse loses its winter coat — but it may also have a more sinister explanation.

“Sometimes the bald patch can be caused by dermatitis. This can be as a result of poor management, for example riding the horse when its coat is wet; there are also some quite nasty forms of staphylococcal dermatitis, which cause painful bald patches,” explains Joe.

“It can also be symptomatic of an asymmetry caused by lameness, or even a kissing spine issue. But more commonly it is due to issues with the saddle or other equipment. We recommend that owners with new horses get their saddles checked every six to eight weeks as the horse can change shape a lot and this has an impact on fit,” says Joe.

Georgie Webb is a Society of Master Saddlers qualified saddle fitter based in Yorkshire, and agrees that bald patches beneath the back section of the panel are often an indication there’s a problem with the saddle.

“Saddles are all about balance — if you’re getting a rubbed patch beneath the back part of the panel, it usually means there’s movement at the front, or that the saddle is a little too wide. We will sometimes see clients who have noticed an issue and tried to pad to the back but actually this makes the problem worse,” says Georgie. “Saddles need to be checked regularly and flocking adjusted to prevent this kind of issue. If you’re getting a bald patch on one side but not the other, this can point to asymmetry of the horse, rider or saddle — often, saddle asymmetry is caused by asymmetry of the horse or rider, and proper flocking can rectify this so long as the saddle is symmetrical in every other way.”

In other cases, it’s not the saddle that is the problem but the numnah or saddle pad used beneath it. McTimoney equine chiropractor Dani Paizis says this is one of the first things to rule out when bald patches appear.

“A numnah that is too short can cause this kind of problem, as the saddle applies pressure. Once this is ruled out, I’m looking at three possible problems: rider symmetry, saddle balance and finally musculoskeletal injury.

“If the rider is crooked, riding with uneven stirrups or carrying a back or pelvic injury of their own, it’s unlikely they will be balanced in the saddle. Also, any musculoskeletal injury or imbalance no matter where in the body can cause referral problems affecting lumbar and pelvic balance, which in turn creates uneven stride patterns and affects saddle movement.

“In my experience, it can be all three causes in play and all three need addressing. If the saddle rubs don’t improve within a few weeks, however, it is important to seek veterinary advice for a thorough investigation, as there could be a serious underlying musculoskeletal problem, such as overriding dorsal spinous processes (kissing spine) or a sacroiliac strain,” says Dani.

Our reviewer found this saddle paddle perfect for competition but also useful for when schooling at home

I tested a navy blue Microperformance + advanced saddle pad in full size. The first thing that I noticed about this saddle pad was it’s attractive appearance. It has a diamond quilt pattern and 6mm edging cord around the outside. This means that I have found the pad smart enough to go to showjumping competitions in, however I do use it for all disciplines at home.

It is a general-purpose pad and has an ergonomic design — it fits under the saddle neatly, as you can see from the photos. The saddle pad is also very lightweight and features a specially formulated cool dry mesh lining on the underside, which wicks away sweat from the horse’s body.

The saddle pad is therefore both breathable and sweat absorbing, making it perfect for summer riding, competitions or more intense schooling work. The benefit of this is that the horse does not lather up under the pad, as commonly found after extensive exercise, and instead remains dry and comfortable. I have tested the pad in a range of temperatures, and when performing a variety of different exercises and have found it to perform well, even when the horse gets very sweaty.

In addition to this the saddle pad is anti slip (I have found that the lining grips the horse well and the pad also features has girth loops). The lining also dries quickly after exercise, meaning that the saddle pad does not smell and is ready to use again the next day. I have also found that I’ve not needed to wash it as often as my other pads.

It would be nice to see this saddle pad available in a wider variety of colours, as it’s currently only available in navy blue, black and white and a version with smaller branding on the side could be beneficial, as the Microfibre+ logo is quite big.

Verdict

Overall I would recommend this saddle pad to anyone who wants a functional, yet smart pad that will keep their horse cool and dry throughout different levels of exercise

PDS relief girth black: review

Our reviewer loved this girth for its high performance qualities

Having tried all manner of girths on my little horse, this one is a clear winner for me.

Even many modern cut-back girths have interfered with the back of her shoulder and cause rubs and hair loss. Some even make a strange clicking noise as her elbow passes over them. As a sensitive mare she doesn’t appreciate that!

After testing this girth for four months it has become my firm favourite.

It is lightweight and butter-soft while being easy to use and clean. The leather is smooth and soft and it’s easy to clean it to a good shine as it feels like high quality. There are no sharp edges anywhere or areas that rub.

The elasticated panels on both sides mean the girth is easy to do up and allows movement, rather than restricting it.

The wider panel over the sternum allows for a wider distribution of pressure, which I imagine makes life more comfortable for the horse.

There are no sharp edges and the cut-back is positioned in just the right place.

The panels on the end under the buckles are not quite symmetrical, allowing them to sit flush against the horse’s side.

I tested a 26-inch model on my 15.2hh warmblood mare. I like the buckles to be high up by the saddlepad as I have used shorter girths in the past and found that when the buckles were lower, they interfered with my horse’s elbow.

The girth features a sturdy silver ring in the centre, very useful if you wish to ride in draw reins as you don’t have to faff about looking for a loop to go around the girth to clip the running reins to. It’s not so big and intrusive that you can spot it when it’s not in use though.

The keepers are well placed. When I’m in a hurry I’ve sometimes just put the free ends through only the big keeper, which works fine. But when at shows or trying to be smarter, the loose ends of the girth straps easily tuck through and sit flat and neatly.

Because the keepers are sewn-on hoops — an not ones that slide up and down the leather straps — they remain in the right place at all times.

All in all this is a simple, brilliant girth offering an excellent experience for both horse and rider. It might be coincidence, but it’s also the girth that’s accompanied my horse’s journey from medium level to her first advanced test. It is expensive at £135, but it’s worth the money for a happy horse athlete.

Verdict

Despite this product being slightly on the pricey side, it is now a firm favourite with our reviewer

Top craftsmanship recognised at saddlery awards

A wide array of both new and established talent was on show at a national saddlery competition last week (8 February).

The Society of Master Saddlers’ national saddlery competition was held at Saddlers’ Hall, London.

Steven Delaney of Vale Brothers was won the Bruce Emtage memorial plate for best in show. The award was made for Steven’s entry in the open saddle class.

“I am delighted to win the award,” he said. “It is always a great honour to take home a prize at the national competition which gets better and better every year.”

The Side Saddle Association trophy for the best side saddle went to James Adair.

“This is the first side saddle I have ever made,” he said. “I was encouraged by Mark Romain of the Saddlery Training Centre to have a go, so to win is just fantastic.”

The Les Coker Millennium trophy for the best entry by an apprentice was awarded to Kirsty Thomson of The Royal Mews for her driving bridle, which was entered into the open harness class.

Ellie Tomlinson received the Alf Batchelor Memorial Trophy for the best bridlework for her breast girth, which was entered in the intermediate bridle class.

The winning entry of a gun-slip was the work of Master Saddler Catherine Baker, from Wiltshire, which was previewed at BETA International 2016 (24-26 January) in Birmingham.

Founder of popular saddlers dies

The founder of a well-known saddlers has died.

Geoff Charley, who founded Townfields Saddlers, passed away at Kineton Manor Nursing Home on 21 June following a long illness. He was 75.

Geoff was known to many in the equestrian and shooting worlds through the family business, which he set up with his wife Gill in 1963.

He was very involved in equestrian sport from a young age where he was took part in gymkhanas and showjumping.

Geoff later developed a love for hunting, team chasing and point-to-pointing and also set up a riding school where he started selling second-hand saddles.

In his competitive career, he qualified several times for the working hunter of the year final at Horse of the Year Show.

Alongside his family, Geoff ran the saddlers, which is based near Coventry, for more than 50 years.

The saddlers was an established sight on the equestrian event circuit.

Geoff leaves behind his wife, their children Adrian and Sarah, Adrian’s wife Julie and four grandchildren: Ben, William, Tom and Harry.

Sarah told H&H: “He built Townfields to what it is today because he loved horse sport and adored working alongside his family.

“In fact spending time with family especially his grandchildren was one of his great loves, alongside fishing and shooting and being part of the equestrian fraternity.”

A minute’s silence is set to be held at the Hickstead Derby on Sunday (28 June) in honour of Geoff.

Badminton Horse Trials’ director Hugh Thomas said: “Geoff will be sadly missed by all the show organisers — he was a real character who contributed hugely to the atmosphere in a successful trade stand village.”

A private family funeral will take place on 7 July 2015 at Moreton Morrell Church.

Following this, a service to celebrate Geoff’s life will take place at 3pm at Walton Hall Hotel & Spa, Warwickshire, followed by afternoon tea.

A saddler — who has spent years promoting the importance of saddle fitting — was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) International trade fair on Monday (23 February).

Ken Lyndon-Dykes told H&H he burst into tears when he heard he would be receiving the award.

“It was such a surprise. To be recognised by your peers is the greatest honour,” he added.

Mr Lyndon-Dykes joined the equestrian trade by accident after he broke his back in a plane crash at the 1972 British Air Race. Afterwards he was told he would probably be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

Mr Lyndon-Dykes had been working in the publishing industry, but now had to rethink his future career. Horses had always been a big part of his life — in his late teens he had given up his place at Oxford to run a trekking centre in Wales — so he decided to go back to the equestrian world and started selling saddles by mail order.

In 1973 Ken opened his first equestrian retail outlet, building it up into a chain of 56 shops. He also had shops within major stores including Lillywhites, Swaine Adeney Brigg and Millets.

The business was sold in 1999 to the board of directors, but Ken continued in saddlery setting up Kent-based Saddleworld.

After Mr Lyndon-Dykes’s accident, he developed his own rehabilitation programme and four years later was riding again and eventing at national and international level.

In his early days in the saddlery industry Ken became aware of the deficiencies in saddle fitting, believing not enough consideration was given to the welfare of the horse.

He helped the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) develop its saddle-fitting qualifications and courses, wrote many books on the subject and lectured widely to promote its importance.

“Ken has made a great contribution to the equestrian industry for many years, promoting the importance of saddle fitting and playing an influential role in both BETA and the SMS,” said a BETA spokesman.

ASA upholds complaints about saddlery competition

An online saddlery has been rapped by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) after breaching codes on sales promotions in a Facebook competition.

The ASA received five complaints regarding a competition run last October on Bridleworks’ Facebook page, which offered owners “the chance to see their four-legged friend become the face of our exciting new brand.”

Complaints over the judging of the competition were upheld by the ASA last week (28 January).

Entrants were asked to upload a photo and ask their Facebook friends to “like” their picture.

The competition said the top 20 equines with the most likes would go through to the second round, where an independent panel would choose the winner.

However, the ASA received four complaints from entrants who challenged whether the promotion was fairly administered. Another complainant questioned whether the voting system was clearly stated in the terms and conditions.

Rebecca Penny founder of Bridleworks argued the competition was run fairly through an online third-party service. She told the ASA this enabled competition organisers to change the criteria and allow participants to gain bonus points for sharing the page and inviting friends to “like” it.

“There was a link to the terms and conditions at the bottom of the competition,” maintained Ms Penny. “I did everything fairly, it was just a case of a few people not reading the terms and conditions properly.”

She told H&H the details of winner and runner-up were announced on the company’s Facebook page on 14 November 2014, and in the spring the new face of Bridleworks will be multiple Horse of the Year Show winner Login Lucky Lad, a coloured traditional pony.

But after an investigation the ASA concluded the promotion had breached codes on sales promotions, administration and prize promotions. Bridleworks was told the ad must not appear in its current form again, and any future competitions must have the voting system clearly stated in the terms and conditions.

Saddlers awarded for ‘outstanding’ work [PICTURES]

Talented new saddlers were recognised at the Society of Master Saddlers national saddlery competition held at Saddlers’ Hall in London last month (30 January).

“The standard of craftsmanship throughout was to a very high level and the attention to detail and creative flair on display has been outstanding,” said the Society’s president, Peter Wilkes.

“Without doubt the skills demonstrated improve year on year and we should be proud so much effort is put into the entries.”

One of the most delighted winner’s was Helen Leedham (pictured, top) who won the Bruce Emtage Memorial Plate for Best in Show with her leather horse’s head.

“I wouldn’t like to say how many hours of work it took, as it was a project I developed during spare time and after work but I feel very proud it was awarded best in show,” she said.

The team at Vale Brothers were also celebrating after Steven Delaney won the trade/company saddle category for any design of leather English astride saddle and the open saddle section for any design of saddle suitable for cross-country or showjumping.

Delaney took home the Neil McCarraher trophy for the most attractive and commercially viable saddle in the trade/company section.

The best entry by an apprentice was awarded to Victoria Scott of Hastilow Competition Saddles. She won the Les Coker Millennium trophy for her saddle entered in the trainee saddle class.

Frances Kelly took home the Alf Batchelor Memorial trophy for the best bridlework entry repeating her 2014 performance.

The Side Saddle Association trophy for the best side saddle went to a thrilled Clare Barnett. The award was presented by the Association’s chairman Janet Senior.

One of the most popular classes with over 30 entries was the special open class to produce a rolled dog collar.

“We really did have to look for the finest detail, the standard of craftsmanship was excellent and it was a very close call amongst the top entries,” said judge Wendy Hoggard.

The class was eventually awarded to Helen Reader with Frances Kelly and Tiffany Parkinson in second and third place.

Leading saddlery firm resurrected

One of Britain’s oldest saddlery brands is being relaunched under a new name.

Barnsby Equestrian had been in financial difficulties and went into administration this summer.

The Walsall-based firm was set up in 1873 and was formerly known as Jabez Cliff Limited.

When the company went under, the directors hoped the “strength and reputation” of the Barnsley saddles would enable the brand to continue.

Now fellow Walsall saddler, Ideal & WRS has bought all the saddle tree manufacturing equipment from the administrator of Barnsby assets.

The new Barclay & Co saddle range will use the same patterns and saddle trees as Barnsby.

The company has resurrected the Barclay & Co label that had been used in the Canadian market and has registered the saddle tree brand Beebee & Beebee used by Barnsby.

James Hitchen, former managing director of Jabez Cliff & Co, has joined the team at Ideal.

“The Barclay & Co saddle range will be uniquely similar to the Barnsby range as they will be built on exactly the same saddle trees,” he said.

“The most notable aesthetic difference will be the Barclay & Co saddle nails and plates,” he added.

The 17 models in the new range represent the bulk of Barnsby’s product portfolio across all equestrian disciplines.

The Barclay & Co range will include the pony saddle, the VSS, the Schockemohle and Milton jumping saddles and Kanter and Majestic dressage saddles.

All the saddles will be manufactured in-house across both of Ideal & WRS’s factories under production director Shaun Marsland.

The Barclay & Co saddles will be sold to the trade for exactly the same prices as the original Barnsby range.

Saddlers to convene for Saddle Research Trust conference

Saddlers will convene in Cambridge this weekend (Saturday 29 November) for the second international Saddle Research Trust conference.

The conference is themed “Horses, saddles and riders: Applying the Science” and is held at the Anglia Ruskin University.

“I encounter saddle-related problems on a daily basis and feel that it is hugely important that the riding public is made aware of these problems and how they could be improved. This conference gives a tremendous opportunity for exchange of information,” said Dr Sue Dyson, who is head of equine clinical orthopaedics of the Centre for Equine Studies at the Animal Health Trust Newmarket.

Throughout the day Dr Sue Dyson will be discussing what causes saddle slip and the implications of saddle fit, Prof Christian Peham will discuss the movement of the horse’s back, Dr Katja von Peinen talks the effects of saddle design and function, Prof Lars Roepstorff will explore the influence of the rider, Anne Bondi is to talk about what is horse, saddle and rider interaction and Prof Rene van Weeren will discuss how we can apply science in the equine industry.

“It is all about the horse, the tack and the rider and the interplay between them,” said Prof Rene van Weeran.

“Those are the factors that determine, apart from performance of course, equine health and equine welfare, issues that lie at the heart of every horse lover and that become more and more important in present-day society. I am more than pleased and feel honoured to be able to contribute to this important meeting.”

Professor Hilary Clayton is looking forward to the conference.

“The first SRT Conference was the start of a new era in terms of understanding the horse/rider/saddle interaction and laying the groundwork for future initiatives aimed at improving horse health and welfare,” she said.

“I am greatly looking forward to the second SRT Conference to learn about the progress that has been made during the past two years and to discuss future progress in this important area.”

Brand assets of leading saddlery firm bought by sports branding company

The intellectual property assets of Barnsby Saddlery have been bought by a sports branding company, after the company went into administration earlier this year.

The Walsall-based saddle makers, formally known as Jabez Cliff, stopped trading in June and made its 26 staff members redundant.

The brand assets, which include a range of registered and unregistered trademarks, rights in the company’s designs, organisational knowledge, domain names and the e-commerce website content have now been bought by The Sports HQ.

Saddlery company to export products to china

Black Country Saddles is planning on exporting its products to China.

There is a growing demand for equestrian sport in the country, both in leisure and competition markets.

Last month an export plan was announced, allowing horses to be transported into the country for the first time.

The saddlery company is working with the China-Britain Business Council and has attended a regional Chinese forum.

And Black Country Saddles’ plans attracted the attention of BBC Midlands Today.

A camera crew visited the company’s Cannock premises to film the saddles in all stages of the manufacturing process.

“We were delighted to have been filmed and talk about our plans,” said Mark Bryan.

“Although it proved to be quite nerve-wracking in front of the camera for everyone it was also a great opportunity to showcase the skills of our saddlery team and the growth of the business,” he added.

Saying “well done” to our World Equestrian Games (WEG) team barely covers it. We’re all so proud of you and in awe of the all-conquering Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro.

A team silver medal and Olympic qualification is just the best news. And this achieved by a quartet including horses that have yet to reach their peak makes Rio 2016 seem more exciting still.

Thank goodness WEG dressage was “clean” on the doping front, which is more than can be said for the loos at the dressage stadium.

I’m told the combination of French-style “squatters”, heavy rain, uncollected waste matter and a lot of people, was more than enough to put one off one’s croissants. Quite what the Paralympic contingent was supposed to do, heaven alone knows.

Before long, lurid descriptions began to appear on internet forums, with one poster declaring: “Where was Pammy Hutton when you needed her?”

Well, at least when my time comes I’ll be remembered for promoting good, clean toilets at equestrian competitions.

Sitting askew

We hear so much about saddles and so little about seats.

Equestrian magazines are full of expensive saddles with better and better ones recommended by top international riders and trainers.

I absolutely know that a saddle must fit horse and rider, be comfortable for both parties and of symmetrical construction. Do check yours; you’d be amazed how many lopsided saddles are out there. Bad examples can destroy horses’backs — and riders’too.

But what about the rider’s seat, body and control over their weight, be there lots or little of it? Any benefit of a £2k or £3k saddle is immediately wiped out by a lack of fitness and understanding of a good seat.

I so wish that more teaching in this was given to riders, bareback if necessary, because a crooked rider transmits that fault down through the saddle to the horse’s back.

Almost everywhere I go, I’m met with a problem-solving saddle — when the saddle isn’t the problem.

The letter of the law

Here at Talland, we’re undergoing a belated and much needed review from the British Horse Society (BHS) to rectify our shortcomings as an approved riding school. With must-do list in hand, we’re busy realigning ourselves.

Included in this list was a complaint that we used a bridle with the noseband strap over the headpiece. I have competed internationally with this set-up because few noseband straps are wide enough to avoid putting pressure behind the horse’s ears. I could go out and buy padded headpieces — but what would that cost the school?

While I recognise standards are important, overzealous implementation can sometimes backfire. I know of one good centre now relinquishing BHS approval because the goalposts are too polished.

On approvals day, the Fellow of the BHS giving a lecture allegedly received only the following feedback: “You had a responsibility to remove the hoody off one of the young people listening”— nothing about the content. That did it.

Meanwhile, as an approved centre for 50 years, we’re working on balancing the care and training of horses, welfare and teaching of clients and students, and maintenance of facilities to the required level. Wish us luck!

No need for chocolate

A new survey into happiness made me vow not to take my horses for granted.

When 2,000 UK adults were questioned, 80% stated they were happiest when reminiscing with friends and family. Almost half said that such memories provided a greater emotional boost than their next favourite thing — chocolate.

Of course, friends and family are precious, but chocolate being the next best thing that makes people happy? Wow, how lucky we are to have horses and all the pleasure they bring.

It’s often the everyday horsey happenings that make us smile. My best fun this month was cantering up our hill, following an event rider and wondering if my eyesight was going or if I was travelling too slowly as he disappeared over the horizon.

So next time having horses feels expensive or time-consuming, go for a canter rather than reach for the chocolate.

Irish saddlery reopens

Ireland’s biggest saddlery is reopening later this month (19 September).

Homestead Saddlery Superstore at Kill, Co Kildare, was closed in October 2011 after devastating floods.

A stream flooded the premises after four months of rain fell in an hour in nearby Dublin.

The 6,500sqft saddlery has been completely refurbished and will be stocking a wide range of equestrian goods and country clothing.

Up to 30 full and part-time jobs will be created over the next two years, many in the expanding internet business being launched for the export market.

“We are delighted to be getting back into business and feel that value and service are more important than ever,” said brand manager, Mags Heffernan.

Online saddle fitting survey launched

A new online survey has been launched to find out how often riders check their saddle fit and how easy it is to find a saddle fitter.

The survey is being run by saddle designer and manufacturer Sue Carson Saddles.

Sue Carson, an experienced saddlefitter, believes strongly that “saddle fitting is such a fundamental part of the soundness and mental wellbeing of our horses it should be regarded as a ‘profession’ like an equine dental technician, physiotherapist or chiropractor.”

Saddlefitters currently need no qualifications to fit saddles, but this needs to change said Mrs Carson to attract “more good people into what is a rewarding career.”

She believes too many riders still don’t have access to a good saddle fitter and many don’t understand how to find one.

Mrs Carson has just become an allied trade member of the Society of Master Saddlers (UK).

Leading saddlery company ceases trading

One of Britain’s longest-running equestrian businesses, Barnsby Saddlery, has gone into administration.

The company, which was founded in 1873, has now stopped trading and has made its 26 members of staff redundant.

The Walsall-based firm— formally known as Jabez Cliff Limited — hit major financial problems at the end of last year (news, 16 January). It announced just before Christmas that it had made seven members of staff redundant and had agreed a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) — which allows a company to pay back debts over a fixed period — with all its creditors.

At the time, the firm told H&H its financial difficulties were not due to falling sales, but were because of cash flow issues and debts.

Andy McGill, from finance firm Smith & Williamson which is handling the process, said that directors had worked hard over the past six months to “turn the business around”. The company had hoped to be able to boost its international sales to increase profit.

“Unfortunately, market conditions have proved too tough and opportunities have not matched their expectations,” said Mr McGill.

The brand also sponsored high-profile riders, including eventers Mary King (pictured top) and Laura Collett and showjumper Guy Williams.

Despite the company telling H&H it would continue to support its riders in January, all deals have now been ended as part of the process.

“I’m very kindly sponsored by Equipe saddles now,” Laura told H&H. “They have measured up all the horses and the saddles are in the process of being made.”

Smith & Williamson will now try to sell the business’ assets to recoup money for creditors.

Mr McGill is hopeful that the “strength and reputation” of the brand will mean that Barnsby can continue in some form as part of the equestrian market.

Equine vet students get industry education

Martin Wilkinson Saddlers is to work with the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) to help to train equine veterinary students.

The RVC has decided to include lectures and demonstrations from industry professionals as part of its training. This is to try and achieve a more “joined up” approach to clinical diagnosis and treatment.

The students will have 2 opportunities to learn more about the industry both before and after their clinical rotations.

Martin Wilkinson Saddlers hope that the seminars will provide both a basic understanding of saddle fitting and how saddles are made, as well as tackling more in-depth problems.

Martin Wilkinson said: “We are thrilled to be part of this forward looking initiative. It is a really positive step, which can only result in an enhancement in the recognition by owners of the skills of the Master Saddler and Qualified Saddle Fitter and ultimately for the good of the horse.”

Society of Master Saddlers ‘Fit for Purpose’ awareness day

The Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) will be holding a “Fit for the Purpose” awareness day in October.

The event will be at the Unicorn Equestrian Centre, Netherswell, Stow-on-the-Wold (19 October).

100 places are available for the event, which is intended to educate riders, owners, student vets and trainers about the importance of saddle fit and the fitness of both horse and rider.

“Looking at your horse’s fitness, the SMS will help you understand the difference between conformation and condition,” said a spokesman for the event.

“There will also be a range of saddle work stations to provide advice, practical knowledge and experience.

“These include help on saddle panels and construction, recognising the difference between quality and inferior saddles, types of tree and broken trees and saddle safety.”

Speakers include SMS veterinary consultant Stewart Hastie, and Emma Phillips who will look at chiropractics for the horse and human.

Tickets are £60 and include refreshments, lunch and a goody bag.

New training opportunities for saddlers

The Society of Master Saddlers has launched a new Continuous Professional Development (CPD) scheme to encourage its members to keep updating their skills and training.

CPD points are now awarded to encourage saddlers and saddle-fitters to take part in a range of training opportunities. These include saddle-making and saddle-making courses, conferences, health and safety programmes and business courses.

“CPD is not compulsory but we recommend that [those who participate] should aim to gain 10 CPD points a year averaged over a three-year period,” said Hazel Morley of the Society of Master Saddlers.

“Ideally knowledge should be kept up to date and the standards gained on qualifying should at the very least be maintained.

“While not exclusive, the accrual of CPD points goes some way to formally recognising this.

“Saddlers and saddle-fitters actively advancing their expertise will be better equipped to deal with a more diverse range of problems and business scenarios, and perhaps even give them the competitive edge.”

Master saddler Issi Russell wins award

Master saddler and bridlemaker Issi Russell has received an award from The Princess Royal for her contribution to the saddlery industry.

Issi was awarded a highly commended certificate at the City and Guilds of London Institute Awards at Buckingham Palace last month.

The certificate is presented to one of the nominees for the Prince Philip Medal, which recognises people who have “travelled the City & Guilds path” and excelled in their field.

“It was great to receive the certificate and wonderful to be able to go to Buckingham Palace for the ceremony,” said Cirencester-based Issi.

“I feel fortunate to be recognised for my work, which is a true passion and something that I enjoy everyday.”

Issi, 30, began her career as an apprentice in 2003 and her bridles are used by top riders including Charlotte Dujardin, Carl Hester and Zara Phillips.

Paralympic stars visit Black Country Saddles

Paralympic gold medallists Sophie Wells and Natasha Baker last month visited their sponsors Black Country Saddles at the company’s Cannock headquarters.

While there the pair were also rewarded for their performances at London 2012, as they were presented with new saddles.

“It was wonderful to have both Sophie and Natasha visit Black Country Saddles and to have the opportunity to talk to them face to face about their brilliant achievements at the Paralympics,” said managing director Mark Bryan.

“They are great ambassadors for the brand and our products, and we are delighted to support them in their efforts to compete at the top of their sport.

“We are pleased that business is continuing at a swift pace and to this end have recruited two new apprentices to the team.”

The team also went through the new bespoke saddles that have been specially made for Sophie and Natasha’s young horses being aimed at Rio.

Saddlery research needs to be better communicated

Scientists and industry experts need to improve the way they communicate to ensure that cutting edge research in horse, rider and saddle interaction reaches a wider audience.

This was the one of the key messages of the inaugural Saddle Research Trust’s (SRT) international conference, which took place at the Anglia Ruskin University of Cambridge and the Animal Health Trust (AHT) last month.

The three-day seminar – the first of its kind worldwide – included eminent speakers such as Dr Hilary Clayton from Michigan State University.

It brought together vets, researchers, saddlers, physiotherapists, riders and trainers to discuss where current research in this field is heading and target key new areas for investigation.

SRT director Anne Bondi, said: “There is a huge amount of new technology becoming available to researchers in this field, which makes it very exciting.

“A lot of work needs to be done, but this workshop represents the first important step. We are thrilled that this subject has caught the public imagination and hope that this will stimulate fund-raising for future research.”

Conference chair Dr Sue Dyson, head of orthopaedics at the AHT, added: “This was a fantastic opportunity to share ideas and collaborate for the future, which will ultimately benefit both horses and riders.”

Correction: Black Horse Saddlery

ON 1 December, H&H published a story headed “Companies close down” that contained an error.

We had been informed by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) that Black Horse Saddlery was apparently no longer trading and that BETA had received a complaint from a customer who had been trying to contact Black Horse Saddlery without success.

We followed this up and tried to contact Black Horse Saddlery ourselves over a two-week period but were unable to get through.

We have subsequently been contacted by Black Horse Saddlery, which informs us that it is still open but has had difficulties with phonelines.

Best British saddlers recognised at annual society awards

The skills of British saddlers were celebrated on 3 February at the Society of Master Saddlers national annual saddlery awards.

The main honour went to Mark Romain (pictured right), of the Saddlery Training Centre in Salisbury, Wiltshire, who was awarded a Fellowship. “I’m lost for words and thrilled,” he told H&H.

Prominent winners on the night included Laura Dempsey, who won The Side-Saddle Association Trophy for the best side-saddle and Mary Wing To who took the prize for the best harness. Ellie Duggan won best entry by an apprentice and Helen Leedham took ‘best in show’ with her leather clock.

The Master, Peter Lewis, praised the quality of the saddlers: “The competition is going from strength to strength — there were over 80 entries this year — and these awards show what is so good about British saddlery.”

Commentator Mike Tucker, who was acting as celebrity judge, added his praise: “I’m aghast by the wonderful work. I’m inspired by what I’ve seen and believe the industry is in very good hands — the apprentice work looks very exciting for the future.”

The awards, which have been run annually since 1974, were held at Saddlers Hall, London.

Paralympian Lee Pearson opens new Devon saddle studio

Paralympic dressage world champion, Lee Pearson, will officially open Nutwell Saddlery’s new saddle studio and consultation suite in Lympstone, Exeter, on Sunday 23 January.

Lee is the world’s most successful Paralympic dressage rider, having won 27 gold medals, including nine Paralympic Games Gold medals.

He was also named 2004 Sportsman of the Year by the Daily Telegraph and is an MBE.

The new saddle studio, which opened on 1 December, allows Nutwell Saddlery customers to see and experience the 150 new saddles kept in stock.

And the consultation suite includes stabling and an indoor fitting area with direct access to an indoor riding arena, for customers buying a new saddle or having the fit of their current saddle checked.

£100,000 of tack stolen from saddlery in Droitwich

Horse owners are being warned to be wary of buying tack from unknown sellers after a massive theft in Worcestershire recently.

Almost £100,000 of tack, including 90 brand new saddles, was taken from Horsatack Saddlery on Roman Way Retail Park, Droitwich, near Birmingham, between 6.10pm on Saturday 16 October and 9.05am on Sunday 17 October.

Richard Utting from Horsatack told H&H: “We sell a wide selection of equestrian goods but all that was taken was saddles and bridles.

“We were quite clearly targeted by professionals — they knew what they were taking and had planned it.

“They broke in through a wall and even got past the alarm system. It’s taken us eight days to restock but we’re back on track now.”

The saddlery has since upgraded all its security and alarm systems.

“We just want people to be wary if they are offered tack at a good price from an unknown seller,” Mr Utting added.

A police investigation is ongoing, but police said they haven’t seen a tack theft of this scale in the area before.

A spokesman added: “We would like to hear from anyone who is offered equipment from an unexpected source as well as anyone who saw anything suspicious at the premises between the given times.”

Frogpool Manor sold to Kent-based equestrian retailer Speedgate

Equestrian retailer Frogpool Manor in Kent has been taken over by Speedgate saddlery.

Longfield company Speedgate Enterprises Ltd has bought the goodwill and assets of the Chislehurst-based Frogpool, which was run by the Dyer family for over 25 years.

Former Frogpool director David Dyer will now trade as David Dyer Saddles, and will continue to fit and supply saddles from the Frogpool Manor premises.

Speedgate’s managing director Ashley Hollands told H&H the purchase had been under discussion for a year, and that no decision has been made about the future of the Frogpool Manor name.

“We know there is great value in the Frogpool brand, and the next step is to integrate commercially — but Frogpool will certainly continue to exist in some way.”

Speedgate was set up in 1974, and the saddlery and equestrian business established in 1982, by Mr Hollands’ mother.

Mr Hollands said he hoped the combination of both businesses would allow Speedgate to offer: “a sold range of horse and rider essentials across both stores and an outstanding representation of specialist and premium products in individual stores.”

He added: “This deal represents for an excellent opportunity for growth, bringing improved service and value for money to the existing customer base of both businesses.”

David Dyer said he is looking forward to working with Speedgate as a “true one-stop shop” while devoting more time to saddle fiting, his “true area of expertise”.

West Midlands saddler produces tack for Robin Hood film

A saddler in the West Midlands is eagerly awaiting the showing of the new Ridley Scott blockbuster Robin Hood.

As well as starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett — the film also features tack made by Black Country Saddles.

The company was asked a year go whether it would produce saddles for the film, which is out on Friday (14 May).

“This was a really exciting project for us as these saddles were far from our usual production,” said Black Country Saddles sales manager Nikki Newcombe.

“I visited Shepperton Studios to consult with the creative designers on the styles of a medieval saddle. After many discussions designs we agreed upon for an array of models for Cardinals Men, King Johns Guards’ and most importantly Maid Marion’s.

“The finishing touches to each saddle was individual with the ornate metalwork and we were given pretty much free rein which involved a lot of ideas and great deal of fun in the factory.”

Hang up the red and white bunting in your stable yard — it’s St George’s Day (23 April)!

St George is not only the patron saint of England but also of horses, riders and saddlers.

And his day will be celebrated in patriotic style by London Livery Company The Worshipful Company of Saddlers.

A spokesman for the WCS said: “We hold our quarterly court meeting as close as possible to St George’s Day and all our members wear a red rose.”

The feast day means a day off for horses in Finland, Latvia and Estonia, where riding or driving a horse today means loss of your luck for the year.

One reason suggested why George is patron of the neddies is the fact he is commonly portrayed riding a white horse.

But seeing as he is also the saint for soldiers and archers, cavalry and chivalry, farmers and fieldworkers, butchers and those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphilis, not to mention Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Ethiopia, Portugal, Germany and Greece, he has to be the busiest patron around.

Tack shop worker wrestles thief to the ground

A female staff member at a Dunstable tack shop wrestled a thief to the ground after he tried to steal two pairs of clippers.

The man entered TC Feeds and Tack Haven, in Kensworth, Dunstable, at 12.46pm on 24 October.

He selected two horse clipper sets and made off without paying but the woman gave chase and pinned him to the floor.

The thief threatened to stab the shop worker and managed to escape, making off in a vehicle towards the A5.

The clippers were recovered.

Bedfordshire Police is asking rural businesses, and owners of livestock in the area to be vigilant.

Uninsured tack shop targetted in £32,500 raid

A couple that ran an equestrian supplies store are lucky to be still in business after a raid in which £32,500 worth of horse riding equipment was stolen.

Thieves targeted Your Four Legged Friend at Ripon in North Yorkshire, using oxyacetylene cutting equipment to cut through two gates and a door, to break in overnight and steal all the equestrian goods on the premises, including clothes and riding gear.

To make matters worse, when owners Lynn and Carl Taylor checked the day after the raid on 3 March, they found they were not insured because their policy had run out three weeks earlier and they had assumed it continued automatically.

Six other industrial premises and farm had been the victim of similar burglaries in the same week, said Mrs Taylor. Police are unable to say at this stage whether the offences are linked.

Mrs Taylor said: “It was devastating because they had left the shop in a terrible mess; where it had been raining and they had been walking in and out, everything was soaking and it took a week and half to get everything sorted out.”

Undeterred, the couple have stayed open, although they have been forced to rename the shop The Pet Shed Ripon Ltd, as they are only able to sell goods for small animals such as cats, dogs and rabbits. But they are reassuring customers that as soon as they can afford it they will start stocking equestrian equipment again.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A full examination of the premises was undertaken and investigations are ongoing. No one has been arrested or charged at this time.”

Awards night for members of Society of Master Saddlers

Saddlers from the length and breadth of the country travelled to London last night (Thursday 5 February) for the Society of Master Saddlers’ annual awards ceremony at the historic Saddlers’ Hall.

Master of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers, Jonathan Godrich, congratulated all the entrants, saying the quality of exhibits continued to increase, year on year.

“We really have a wonderful array today which fill the air with that most wonderful of scents, saddlery leather,” he said.

Work exhibited ranged from full-sized dressage saddles and miniature side-saddles made by master saddlers, to head collars, bridles and saddles produced by their trainees and apprentices.

Guest of honour was eventer Mary King, who took her judging role very seriously, reportedly climbing onto every entry in the cross-country/jumping saddle class to assess its comfort, before choosing Patrick Keane of Patrick Saddlery, Walsall’s offering (Patrick and Mary pictured above).

Mr Keane had an exceptionally good night, also claiming the top spot in the open saddle class for his dressage saddle which went on to win best in show and he won the prize for most commercially viable saddle in the trade saddle class.

He told H&H: “It’s very rare for a saddle to win the top prize because there is so much more to go wrong. And this is my second time winning best in show. I am delighted.”

Apprentice Jeannette Hutchinson, who divides her time between being a full-time groom for the Metropolitan Police Mounted Division and learning the trade from Berkshire-based master saddler Frances Kelly, also had a very successful night.

She won the master and apprentice class with Ms Kelly and the trainee bridle class, as well as coming second in the open harness and intermediate bridle classes, claimed two premium awards and got her name on the Les Coker Millennium Trophy, for best entry by an apprentice, for the second year running.

“I am so pleased,” she told H&H. “After four years’ training I am finally finishing my apprenticeship and this is a wonderful way to do it.”

A record number of apprentices — eight — signed up to the society’s Millennium Apprenticeship Scheme, this year.

Society of Master Saddlers hits out against bogus saddle-fitters

Bogus saddle-fitters have been slammed by the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) as being frauds who are damaging the craft.

The cases of an unnamed woman in the Scotland and people in the south-east of England who have merely attended an introductory course, but are advertising themselves as fully qualified, have angered the society.

An SMS spokesman said: “We’ve issued several warnings and will take it to Trading Standards.

“We want to nip it in the bud. If you’ve only done the introductory course, and you say in your advert you are SMS-trained, you are giving a false impression.”

It takes a minimum of three years to qualify as a saddle-fitter. They have to register every year with the society and must attend a refresher course every two years.

The society claims it has the only monitored saddle-fitting qualification worldwide.

Irish youngsters compete for training with Jessica Kurten

Ireland’s Holmestead Saddlery has created a new competition for young riders offering a two-week all-expenses paid trip to train with Jessica Kurten.

The competition — named the Holmestead Young Rider of the Year — will run over qualifiers, warm-up and finals for the Royal Dublin Show (RDS). Points will be awarded to young riders (aged 14-21) competing in 110cm, 120 cm and 130cm classes on a handicap basis.

The eventual winner will take their own horse to Jessica’s state-of-the-art yard in Germany for two weeks. They will get training and advice from Jessica and her team, and all expenses will be paid.

“We wanted to make it more interesting for the young riders and to give everyone a chance to win,” said Bill Holmes, owner of Holmstead Saddlery. “We want to encourage more young people in sport.”

Insurance hikes threaten saddle fitters

Litigation against tack shops and saddle fitters could turn yet another sector of the equestrian insurance market into a minefield and hit small businesses with higher premiums.

One saddle fitter in Wales was on the brink of closure in the autumn after a claim for negligence — which was thrown out after investigation by the saddler’s insurers — and the ensuing 300% premium hike.

“Two years ago, a chap in his 60s turned up and wanted a saddle,” says Graham Butt, a registered saddle fitter who runs Llwynon Saddlery with his wife, Lynn, in the Brecon Beacons. “I had a look at his horse’s back. He took it in the manège and made a real hash of getting on, smacking its back with his leg as he mounted. The horse bucked and he fell off.”

A year later, the Butts were contacted by an insurance company, regarding a claim for negligence for not warning a customer that riding was dangerous.

“At first I thought it was a joke from a mate,” continues Graham. “We went through the accident report forms and realised who it was. The chap claimed he wouldn’t be able to ride again, but was seen hunting that Christmas.

“Our insurer, SEIB/AXA, sent an investigator to look at everything we do at the saddlery and find out if the claim was fraudulent. The next thing we knew, the claim had been kicked out.”

But when the Butts went to renew their public and employers’ liability insurance, AXA, through SEIB, was reluctant to quote. When it did, the Butts’ premium had increased from £2,500 to £8,000.

“It cost the insurers £3,500 to get the claim thrown out,” says Lynn. “We offered to pay that because it would still be cheaper than the higher premium, but we couldn’t. In the end, we got a better quote, of £7,000, from NFU. We have to generate much more income to cover it, and it has hit us hard because we weren’t prepared for the increase.”

Graham adds: “We look at our business differently now: charging for little jobs we might have done for free before. Riders must realise who is going to pay for all this when they claim — they have to take responsibility.”

In another case with SEIB, a saddler fitted a saddle; it slipped, so the customer fell off and sued. The claimant eventually lost, but SEIB spent £20,000 defending it.

About 25 insurers provide business cover for tack shops, in contrast to the handful of insurers who still provide horse insurance. But some do not cover “work away” situations; that is, liability for work off the premises, such as saddle-fitting.

David Snowdon, insurance broker to the Society of Master Saddlers (UK) Ltd and a past master of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers, says it has grown harder to find cover over the past few years — especially for fitting at a client’s yard.

“It’s easy for the consumer to pick up a solicitor and run for it with a claim,” he says. “The problem is the saddle maker, repairer or fitter is often a one-man band, without huge resources, but has to shoulder this considerable liability for what they do.”

The fee includes vet assessment, chiro and physio treatment, farrier report, saddle-fitting, and rider symmetry assessment. If the horse needs any shoeing or veterinary treatment this is charged separately.

Steph told H&H the aim was to bring experts together in one place to help horses and riders.

“Sometimes a horse might have a niggle and the owner struggles to get to the bottom of it. They can end up going round the houses as they go through that checklist. So we thought if we could have a day where we all get together it would be really beneficial,” she said.

Steph said they have had requests to take the clinic on the road, which they are unable to do as it is difficult to get days in the diary, but she would like to see more experts run similar days.

“When everyone can work together it really does get the best results for the horse and rider. It’s not rocket science, but it works well and we also learn from each other,” she said.

Steph added that although the clinics are labelled as performance, they are open to all horses and riders, and are like an “MoT”.

Of the 41 participants who completed the survey, 22.45% said the biggest welfare concern was horse weight issues – and the second biggest concern was owners’ lack of knowledge.

“It’s so important to work with equine professionals, such as saddlery fitters, who have regular contact with horses and their owners and really have the opportunity to influence horse welfare in a positive way,” said Redwings chief executive Lynn Cutress.

Redwings campaigns manager Andie McPherson added the survey was the first of its kind and despite being a small sample, it delivered some “interesting insights” into saddlery fitters’ understanding of welfare priorities and the work of welfare charities in the UK.

“Not keeping up to date with vaccinations puts your horse at risk from the potentially fatal disease, tetanus, and puts your horse and others at risk of an equine influenza outbreak.

“Worm control can easily get out-of-control and this is only realised when it is too late. It’s too easy to let routine testing slip and before you know it, there can be a significant worm problem that can cause internal disease and life-threatening colic.”

Ms Grieve added that routine dental care is also important to maintain.

“Dental problems are much easier to treat and manage if they are caught early. Once they are more advanced, it can be costly and invasive to treat them, and the horse can have been in significant pain before other signs, such as quidding, become apparent,” she said.

BEVA president Huw Griffiths told H&H the organisation is “keeping a careful eye” on the cost of living situation. He said owners can save money by considering things such as shared vet visits and planning routine treatment in advance.

“Leaving the same shoes on for longer might also increase the likelihood of a shoe being lost. This will result in a call-out from your farrier; given the cost of fuel and time, this will most likely cost more than you would have saved by delaying.

“Other pathological issues can range from corns and damaged hoof capsules all the way to tendon damage and joint issues. Routine costs are usually much less than the emergency, unexpected fees.”

“People might think, ‘I’ll leave that six months or have it done next year.’ They tend to think nothing is wrong, but it’s creating a false economy because often the things that are wrong, you can’t physically see,” she said.

“You might think everything is OK, but actually maybe something is starting to wear or some flock has gone asymmetrical. These minor adjustments can make such a big difference to the comfort, welfare and performance of the horse.

Ms Bradley, who is also a British Horse Society accredited coach, has dropped her saddle-fitting prices from £65 to £50 for three months to try to help clients – and those that book their next six-monthly appointment will also be entitled to the discount.

“We encourage owners to look at the advice produced by the National Equine Welfare Council on how to cut costs without cutting care. If an owner or someone they know is concerned or struggling, we urge them to contact us or another charity for advice.”

“The survey takes around 10 minutes to complete, depending on the profession of the person completing it and all responses are totally anonymous,” Dr Nankervis said.

“By taking part, you’ll be contributing to an essential piece of research, helping to improve communications and working practice within the industry.”

‘A visionary’: farewell to renowned to saddle-fitter

He started Kent Leather Distributors, which began in saddle mail-order. The business grew and he owned a chain of 56 outlets. He later sold it and set up the Kent-based company Saddleworld.

He published a number of books on saddle fitting and in 2015 won the British Equestrian Trade Association lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the equestrian industry. He was a long-term supporter of the Society of Master Saddlers and held the role of president in 2016/17.

Mr Lyndon-Dykes’ son Andrew said his father “managed to fit so many lifetimes into one lifetime”, describing him as “extraordinary”. A spokesman for the Society of Master Saddlers said Mr Lyndon-Dykes was a “visionary” in the saddlery industry.

He is survived by his sister Janet and niece Victoria, his son Andrew and daughter-in-law Michelle, and grandchildren Rachel, Daniel and Ross.

“We were aware that there were many competent saddle-fitters out there that are undoubtedly providing an approach to fitting that aligns with the occupational standards for saddle-fitters and frequently beyond it,” he said.

“We are confident this resource will be welcomed by equestrians and, ultimately, allied equine and equitation practitioners seeking intervention from professionally competent saddle-fitters.”

A spokesman for the SMS told H&H the society is aware of the PFSA, but did not wish to comment.

Georgie Webb is a Society of Master Saddlers qualified saddle fitter based in Yorkshire, and agrees that bald patches beneath the back section of the panel are often an indication there’s a problem with the saddle.

“A numnah that is too short can cause this kind of problem, as the saddle applies pressure. Once this is ruled out, I’m looking at three possible problems: rider symmetry, saddle balance and finally musculoskeletal injury.
