Childhood dream realised as European champions progress in Grand Slam – and pocket €500,000

European champions Richard Vogel and United Touch S have further cemented their place in showjumping history by winning a second successive leg in the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping.

Three riders progressed to the third round of Aachen’s Rolex grand prix, and as the live Grand Slam contender, having won in Geneva in December, the stakes were high for Germany’s Richard Vogel and the 14-year-old Untouched stallion.

But, after watching his partner Sophie Hinners (Iron Dames Singclair) post a triple clear in 51.62sec, and brushing off the pressure as “a privilege”, he and United Touch opened up with breathtaking ease in the vast arena.

This mesmeric duo were significantly up on the clock by the third fence and could afford the luxury of a steadying approach to the final Rolex vertical on Frank Rothenberger’s demanding course, yet still stopped the timer more than six seconds faster.

The 57-year-old Argentine contender José María Larocca gave his all from last draw riding 16-year-old Finn Lente but could never match his German rival’s pace, coming home clear in 47.36sec.

“A childhood dream”

So the staggering €450,000 (£390,000) top prize, plus the €500,000 bonus for winning two successive legs of the Rolex Grand Slam, belonged to one of the sport’s greatest ever partnerships. Not only did Richard and United Touch S join Aachen’s pantheon of greats, they extended their outstanding record of having won every five-star jump-off they’ve jumped clear in.

“Winning Aachen is a childhood dream, but to do so with such a special horse, and to have his owner and breeder Julius-Peter Sinnack and my whole team here… I’m thrilled,” said Richard, who has contested three five-star shows this year with United Touch S and won a grand prix at each – the Basel World Cup, leg one of the Grand Slam at the Dutch Masters and now Aachen.

The world number three ranked rider revealed a moment of confusion before setting off on his jump-off round, unsure whether a Rolex oxer still standing from a previous round was actually part of the jump-off course and had to ask an official for clarification.

“After that, I got in the zone and tried to lay down a good jump-off round,” he said. “I knew I had to put everything on the line.”

Great Britain’s Ben Maher soared up the leaderboard from 16th after round one to finish fourth with Enjeu Du Grisien.

Sadly the much-anticipated jump-off showdown between United Touch S and Kent Farrington’s star mare Greya failed to materialise after the latter picked up four faults in round two.

Richard Vogel – Grand Slam quest continues

Richard’s quest to emulate Scott Brash and win the Grand Slam continues at Spruce Meadows in September, but there’s the small matter of the World Championships here in Aachen to target first.

As German riders filled three of the top six placings in Sunday’s grand prix, you’d put good money on the home side landing a medal in August.

Daniel Coyle, 18th in Sunday’s grand prix with Gisborne VDL, won Friday’s grand prix qualifier with 16-year-old Farrel.

“The best riders in the world are here and I was fortunate to come out on top,” said Daniel. “Farrel is like a best friend. When I need help, he is always there.”

Sealing what has been an astonishingly successful week for British showjumpers in Spruce Meadows, Canada, Scott Brash hit the jackpot, winning the sport’s richest ever $5m (£2.7m) competition with his brilliant partner Hello Jefferson on Sunday (7 September).

“This is an amazing day. Jefferson deserved a big win, so to do it here at the biggest grand prix in the world… I’m just delighted for him, for my owners and my team because they work really hard to support me,” said Scott.

Scott Brash versus Kyle King: the ultimate jump-off

The CPKC International presented by Rolex came down to a two-way jump-off between double Olympic gold medallist Scott and USA rider Kyle King (Kayenne Z).

As first to go in the highly tactical third and final round, ice-cool Scott and 16-year-old Jefferson, owned by Lady Harris and Lady Kirkham and looked after by groom David Honnet, looked better than ever. Clearing every towering obstacle set by course-designer Leopoldo Palacios and pivoting neatly round every turn, they set a superb target, finishing clear in 46.97sec.

Kyle set off with great gusto on the big-striding mare, who he’s only ridden for seven months, and the pair were up on the clock at the half-way point. However an ambitious turn over the wavy Canada planks proved their undoing and they toppled, meaning Scott and Jefferson were crowned champions on a truly remarkable day for the sport of showjumping.

“Yes, we won the Olympic gold medal in Paris last year, but up until now we’d never won that big, historic grand prix that we thought Jefferson was capable of, so to finally get one under his belt is a great, great feeling,” said Scott, who was presented with a cheque totalling $1.65m (£884,000) which was awarded as a one-off prize as part of Spruce Meadoes’ 50th anniversary celebrations.

Scott, who turns 40 this year, was lifting the CPKC International trophy at Spruce Meadows for the third time; Jefferson had his name etched on the silverware alongside stable mates Ursula and Hello Sanctos. It also marked the 10-year anniversary of Scott’s success in the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping and the Scotsman now heads to CHI Geneva, Switzerland, in December as the live contender to continue his Rolex Grand Slam journey once again.

World’s richest showjumping class: no double clears

There were no double clears in this world-famous competition; Kyle and Scott both jumping off after picking up four faults apiece in round two. Scott’s penalties came at the renowned double of ditches under the clock tower.

“Jefferson was absolutely fantastic today. I felt he was a bit unlucky to have the ditches down in the second round, he’d been jumping really well and just misjudged the B element a bit,” he said. “But other than that he was amazing. The jump-off is always tricky – how fast do you go? You want to stay clear, but thankfully it was enough, he jumped phenomenal all day.”

Paying tribute to groom of 10 years, David Honnet, Scott added: “He knows Jefferson inside out and he’s worked with him for so many years. Jefferson has a lot of trust in him, and that’s really important. David was emotional today!”

Showjumping stars gather to compete for sport’s richest ever $5m prize: ‘There’s an enormous buzz’

On Sunday (7 September), the world’s leading showjumping athletes will compete for the sport’s biggest ever prize, the $5m CPKC International, presented by Rolex.

Held as part of the CSIO5* Spruce Meadows Masters tournament in Calgary, Canada, Sunday’s grand prix has had its already substantial prize fund boosted by $2m this year, taking it to a record level to celebrate the venue’s 50th anniversary.

World’s biggest showjumping prize: 98 horses arrive from Europe alone

A record 98 horses landed at Calgary airport from Europe this week ahead of the start of the showjumping action today (3 September). Sunday’s grand prix is also part of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, for which Swiss rider Martin Fuchs and his extraordinary horse Leone Jei are the live contenders, as well as the defending champions in the CPKC International. They won it in 2023 and again in 2024.

“This impressive passenger list of horses is testament to the level of excitement there is globally, and within the equine sport world, for the 50th anniversary Spruce Meadows Masters,” said Ian Allison, senior vice president of sport and media services at Spruce Meadows. “The prize money is significant, and record-breaking, creating enormous buzz.”

“Adding to that, the BMO Nations Cup is the sport’s most coveted annual team competition,” he said. “These are just a few of the many ways Spruce Meadows is pulling out all the stops – from the sport to the stunning grounds, incredible entertainment and military offerings.”

The one-time $5m (£2.7m) prize pot far exceeds anything else offered in the showjumping world and is the largest prize offered by any single-day sporting event in Canada.

British rider Tim Gredley hailed the bumper prize pot a monumental move for the sport.

“It is only going to raise the level of the whole industry,” he told H&H.

Riders representing Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, Brazil, Belgium, Netherlands, the USA and Canada will be among those competing in front of the Duchess of Edinburgh, who is the royal patron of Spruce Meadows.

British hopes rest with Scott Brash, competing on the 10th anniversary of his Rolex Grand Slam success with Hello Sanctos in 2015, Sameh El Dahan, Ben Maher, Matt Sampson, Joe Stockdale and Donald Whitaker. Other leading names in action this week include Steve Guerdat, Laura Kraut, Daniel Coyle, Harrie Smolders and the newly crowned European champion Richard Vogel.

“We have introduced a number of exciting new elements at Spruce Meadows this year to celebrate our 50th anniversary,” said Spruce Meadows president and CEO Linda Southern-Heathcott.

“It was important to me, as a former rider and a lifelong advocate for showjumping, to make sure we were doing something extra special for the sport that has always been the lifeblood of Spruce Meadows.

“We have an incredible roster of corporate partners that have enabled us to award more than $200m in prize money since our inception in 1975,” she continued. “That support has extended to this special year, making it possible for us to offer an award that brings us into the realm of many of the biggest sporting prize pots on the globe, with more than $11m [CAD] being awarded across the 2025 tournament season.”

‘Success is not just about winning, it is about progress and personal fulfilment’: life lessons from Scott Brash as he celebrates a 10-year milestone

On this day 10 years ago, Olympic gold medallist Scott Brash was “utterly focussed” on one goal – becoming the first ever winner of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping.

Having already triumphed in the grands prix of Geneva in 2014 and Aachen 2015 with Hello Sanctos, the then 29-year-old headed to the Spruce Meadows Masters, Canada, with one intention – to claim the hat-trick.

The showjumping world watched and held its collective breath as the Scotsman returned to the ring with his trusty partner Sanctos, on the brink of making showjumping history.

“When I rode in, you could hear a pin drop. I don’t think there was much difference in the way my fellow competitors acted, but perhaps it was just a matter of respect, such as providing me with more space in the warm-up – no one wanted to be in the way, which was appreciated,” says Scott of that momentous day.

He and Sanctos were the only pair to jump clear in the final round to win the CP International and to enter the record books as the first – and to-date, the only – showjumping rider to win the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping .

Scott Brash on winning the Rolex Grand Slam: “Suddenly that chapter was done”

Speaking about his momentous achievement as we approach the 10th anniversary (13 September), Rolex Testimonee Scott says he experienced a whole spectrum of emotions in the wake of his success, perhaps the most surprising being a sense of sadness.

“Words cannot really describe what it felt like to win the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping – it all still feels quite surreal,” says Scott.

“I remember experiencing such a mixture of emotions: delight, relief, happiness, even sadness in a strange way as it was a goal our whole team had been utterly focused on, and we had finally achieved our target, suddenly that chapter was done. It was absolutely incredible and a single moment that I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Life lessons he’s learned along the way

Scott Brash’s outstanding values as both a horseman and a sportsman have also helped him to two Olympic gold medals, five further championship medals, the world number one spot and a string of grand prix successes. He shares some important life lessons.

“For me, achievement is a sense of pride in reaching a goal – when all the dedication, preparation, and teamwork come together,” he says. “Success is not just about winning; it is about progress and personal fulfilment.

“For example, competing at a five-star grand prix with a young horse, even if there are faults, can still be an achievement if it marks a significant step in their development.

“Ultimately, it is about pushing boundaries and taking pride in the journey as much as the outcome.”

Scott Brash on Hello Sanctos: “We totally trusted one another”

Of course, none of this would have been achieved without some truly outstanding horses with whom Scott has forged enduring partnerships. Scott’s unparalleled feat of winning the Rolex Grand Slam is even more remarkable by the fact it was achieved with just one horse, the indomitable Hello Sanctos, who conquered three vastly different competitions over nine months for the hat-trick.

“Hello Sanctos is an incredible horse – one of a lifetime,” says Scott. “I think that what made him so special was how clever he was. We understood one another inside out. I could jump a course and visualise before we even went into the ring how he would interpret things and how I needed to ride him to give him his best chance to clear the fences.

“We totally trusted one another and this was one of the keys to our success.”

Next stop on the Rolex Grand Slam, Spruce Meadows in September

Rolex’s partnership with showjumping started in 1957 when British showjumper Pat Smythe became the first Rolex Testimonee and the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping was launched in 2013. It has since been expanded from three to four Majors – The Dutch Masters being the latest addition.

“Winning the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping has been a defining moment in my career, which has elevated my profile beyond the equestrian world,” says Scott.

“Similar to the Olympic Games, the Rolex Grand Slam reaches a broader audience, placing riders on a global stage and bringing greater recognition to the sport.”

‘A rare quality’: the story of an exceptional five-star horse who kept finishing second – then finally won the big one

“Nobody remembers second” the famous saying goes and it’s the harsh reality of so many sports where victory is the ultimate goal.

Showjumping is no exception – we all remember the winners of the Hickstead Derby, the major grands prix and even our national titles, but can you remember who finished second?

For many years, one brilliant horse looked like falling into the category of a showjumping “also ran”. Monaco, a super talented German-bred gelding ridden by Dutch showjumper Harrie Smolders, has proved to be an exceptional talent in the ring. His clear round strike rate is phenomenal and he’s lightning-quick against the clock.

But during a five-star campaign spanning the past few years, Monaco and his popular rider suffered an agonising bout of seconditis, finishing runner-up an astonishing 12 times in some of the world’s biggest competitions.

Harrie Smolders and Monaco: second, second and second again…

The pair’s first big class runner-up spot came in the World Cup of Amsterdam at the start of 2020, continuing in earnest at the end of 2021 when they finished second in the Rolex grand prix of Geneva, followed by the World Cup at the London International, the Rolex grand prix at the 2022 Dutch Masters, the World Cup Final then the Longines Global Champions Tour grand prix of Saint Tropez and Riyadh.

It was at the London Horse Show that Monaco and Harrie Smolders even went viral when a brilliant photo taken by photographer Peter Nixon captured the moment when the duo “missed” at the first fence in the jump-off for the World Cup, leading Harrie to quip, “I had the right distance – but the fence was in the wrong place!”

The partnership remained intact and they crossed the finish line with a clear but, you guessed it, they were pipped at the post on that occasion by Harry Charles and Stardust.

Harrie and Monaco were still knocking on the door into 2023 and 2024 with a runner-up spot in the Hermes grand prix in Paris, the LGCT grands prix of Monte Carlo and Valkenswaard, and in November of last year the pair even managed a double of seconds in Lyon, finishing runner-up in both the grand prix and the World Cup in one weekend.

Finally the stars aligned

Harrie must have been left wondering what he needed to do to score that elusive five-star grand prix victory with Monaco. But on one glorious afternoon in December, everything changed and the stars finally aligned in Geneva.

Competing in the Rolex grand prix, Harrie and Monaco were faultless in round one and, from first draw in an incident-packed jump-off, they scorched home clear once again and guess what? This time nobody could beat this hugely consistent duo. Monaco would, finally, join an illustrious roll of honour and write his name in showjumping history as one of the equine greats to have won a major grand prix. It was also a first Major success for Harrie, who admitted to being “unbelievably nervous” watching the jump-off unfold.

“Throughout his career, Monaco has finished second many times, so at the CHI Geneva, my colleagues, grooms, and everyone behind the scenes were really rooting for him,” says Harrie. “He is such a special horse and everyone wanted to see him get the win he deserved.

“Monaco’s consistency throughout his career has been unbelievable. He has an incredible ability to recognize when it is important to perform, and he is always there when you need him,” explains Harrie, who took the reins on the Cassini II x Contender gelding bred by Ralf Leutja, when he was eight.

Monaco was produced in his early days by Italian rider Bryan Mascenti and Belgium’s Dimme D’Haese before first stepping up to five-star level at the end of 2018 with Harrie. Jennifer Gates (now Gates Nassar), co-owner of Evergate Stables, for whom Harrie rides, took over on Monaco for a while. Then, with Harrie back in the saddle, Monaco landed a milestone first CSI3* grand prix in 2019.

“I have known Monaco since he was seven years old and we know each other inside out,” says Harrie. “Our bond is incredibly strong, and we have maintained great consistency over the years. He has been a key horse for the Dutch team at championships and the FEI World Cup Finals, always delivering when it matters most.”

That victory in Geneva made Harrie the live contender for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping and, while the Dutch rider didn’t manage to follow up in the next leg at the recent Dutch Masters, the victory was life-changing, he says.

“Winning the Rolex Grand Prix at the CHI Geneva in December last year was my first Rolex Major victory, and with that has come more attention – and more pressure,” says Harrie. “We all know how difficult it is to win just one Major, let alone two in a row. To win three consecutively is the ultimate challenge, and it has only happened once in history.”

Harrie describes Monaco as “always full of energy”.

“He is an incredibly smart horse,” says Harrie. “Even as he has got older, he has continued to develop and remains eager to improve – a rare quality among the horses I have worked with in my career. His drive to keep getting better is what sets him apart.

“Monaco is naturally athletic but he also has a cheeky, mischievous side. In the stable, he knows exactly where the snack box is and which groom he can charm into giving him treats.”

Monaco has been back out competing with Harrie at five-star in recent months and, while he’s yet to get his nose in front, he’s definitely proved himself as one of the all-time greats of the sport.

On the road with 19-year-old Catch Me Not S and 17-year-old Hansson WL: meet Peder Fredricson’s elite groom Madelene Nord

Swedish-born Madelene Nord works as show groom to multi-medal-winning showjumper Peder Fredricson and at the recent Dutch Masters Indoor Brabant Horse Show, home of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, she shared some insight into the secrets of their success.

Madelene has ridden since she was a small child, inspired into the saddle by her mother.

“Sweden has a huge equestrian culture with many riders and horses – not always at the top level, but more and more are reaching that stage,” Madelene says. “I also played a lot of football, so I balanced the two sports. During my last three years of school, I focussed on equestrian studies.”

Her mentor at that time was Frank Kutscher, brother of German showjumper Marco Kutscher, who was living in Sweden at the time. He helped Madelene to get to shows, leading eventually to Madelene spending six years working with Marco in Germany, before she joined Peder Fredricson.

“We are here for the horses,” says Peder Fredricson’s show groom Madelene Nord

Madelene has always enjoyed a close relationship with the horses she looks after.

“It is about being with them and spending time with them in different situations,” she says. “This helps you understand how they will react and how to adapt to them.

“We are here for the horses and our job is to learn how they behave – what they enjoy and what they do not. The only way to achieve this is by spending a lot of time with them.”

A key aspect of her role while travelling to shows is settling the horses into a routine they’re comfortable with.

“I try to keep their routines the same – ultimately as close as possible to what they are used to at home,” she explains.

“Of course, at shows, some things need to be adjusted due to the timing of classes, but maintaining familiar routines, like feeding times is very important.”

Top tips: it’s a balance between keeping horses moving and allowing them enough down time

Keeping the horses moving outside their stables is also crucial, she says, while also allowing them enough time to rest.

“I have worked with many experienced people and have learned so much from them,” explains Madelene. “Horses thrive on routine, and if you change too much, things can go wrong. The longer you spend with your horse, the easier it is to read them and notice the small details that can make the difference.”

At the Dutch Masters in Amsterdam, Madelene was looking after two of Peder Fredricson’s top horses, 17-year-old Hansson WL and 19-year-old Catch Me Not S, who she affectionately refers to as “the old gang”.

“But they are really fit and it’s so fun to be out with them because they have so much personality. They know the shows well,” she says. “As soon as they see the truck being prepared and get on it, they know exactly what is happening.”

Madelene reveals that Catch Me Not S is not the easiest at shows.

“He can be quite sharp and fresh, but he really enjoys going to shows, whilst Hansson WL is a bit more relaxed and easy going,” she says. “It is difficult to explain their personalities because we see one side of them from being around them all the time, while other people see a different side in the arena when they are competing. But they are sweet and lovely horses.”

Peder Fredricson: improve, evolve and look for ways to refine your performance

Swedish hero Peder Fredricson is one of the most successful and popular showjumpers of a generation, with nine championship medals to his name.

“He always wants to improve and evolve; he constantly looks for small ways to refine his performance and is open to trying new things,” says Madelene. “His mentality is one of his greatest strengths. He never thinks, ‘That went well, so we shouldn’t change anything’. Instead, he always looks for ways to get better.”

Madelene reveals that groundwork – including handling and lungeing – is core to their training at home and “makes a big difference”.

“This mindset is why he has remained at the top for so long,” she says. “He is always striving for improvement and finding new ways to stay at the highest level.”

Madelene praised the facilities on offer at big events such as the Dutch Masters and other Rolex Grand Slam events.

“There is a lot of space here for both us and the horses – we have room to move around,” she says. “The arenas are big and well-maintained, and everything is close by, so we can go and check out the shops and enjoy the event.

“It is a very important show – one of the biggest on our calendar. Even before you arrive, there is a lot of management involved to ensure everything is in top condition by the time you get here.

“The shows are always extremely well organised and they are continuously working to improve and refine themselves. The biggest difference is that all the top riders want to be here – not just to compete, but to win.

“There is always something extra special about these events,” she adds. “The atmosphere on grand prix day is incredibly intense, which makes it exciting because you feel how important it is. Everything has to be perfect to secure a Major victory.”

Madelene’s top tip for anyone who wants to be an elite groom, is “do not be afraid of making mistakes, but learn from those who have more experience”.

“Everyone makes errors; it is part of the learning process,” she says. “For younger grooms, my advice would be to keep trying. It will not always go perfectly, but the effort and determination will show that you truly want to do it.

“It takes time – I have been working for many years. But as long as you love the horses and are passionate about the job, you will succeed.”

Smolders delivers perfection in incident-packed Rolex grand prix: ‘I’ve never been so nervous’

Dutch showjumper Harrie Smolders delivered the perfect jump-off performance to land his first Major in the Rolex grand prix at CHI Geneva, Switzerland, with his outstanding partner Monaco.

This phenomenal pair have been so consistent at the highest level over several years, but always seem to have played the part of bridesmaid, finishing on the podium at many of the world’s five-star grands prix and World Cups, including in this class in 2021.

But on Sunday afternoon (15 December) in the vast Palexpo Arena it was the Dutch combination’s turn to shine as they produced the winning round in an incident-packed jump-off to decide top honours and win the Rolex Grand Prix, part of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping.

“Monaco really deserved this after all he’s done for my career,” said a delighted Harrie Smolders, who now becomes the new live contender in the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping. “He’s in fantastic shape at the moment and he’s so smart, so experienced. What he showed today is outstanding.”

An incident-packed jump-off featuring 10 high-calibre contenders to decide the Rolex grand prix

Harrie Smolders, ranked 23rd in the world, was drawn first in a 10-strong, high-calibre jump-off, featuring many of the world’s elite equestrian athletes. He and Monaco, a 15-year-old son of Cassini II x Contender, really packed a punch with a relentless gallop. The tail-swishing Monaco opened up during the early stages, before obliging at every turn in the slalom-esque home stretch. The duo stopped the clock clear in 41.74sec, setting a strong target for the chasing pack, but the normally calm Dutchman had to endure a long, anxious wait.

“I’ve never been so nervous watching the jump-off,” he admitted. “I don’t usually get nervous but as the first rider to go in and then have to watch all those other fantastic riders and horses go after me, I was unbelievably nervous.”

Drama immediately followed as the mighty combination of Henrik von Eckermann and King Edward for Sweden had a glance off at the problematic second fence. This eye-catching oxer from the Paris Olympics was sited off a swinging right-hand bend which drew horses heavily to the left, and the same fate befell Henrik’s team-mate Peder Fredricson with Catch Me Not S, who did well to stay on when the veteran gelding ducked out.

Heartbreak for Rolex Grand Slam contender Martin Fuchs

The Rolex Grand Slam live contender and home hero Martin Fuchs with Leone Jei also suffered heartbreak at the same fence, splintering the top pole when arriving off an ambitiously long stride. More drama followed for the first of two Italian contenders, Lorenzo De Luca (Denver De Talma), who fell off at the penultimate Rolex fence when hesitating for a split-second to plot his line through the technically difficult snaking final line and the powerful Denver put down on him.

We had to wait for the sixth rider to witness a second double clear, Italian Giulia Martinengo Marquet and Delta Del’Isle (ITA) leaving the ring with a broad smile and plenty of pats for the 11-year-old gelding, having slotted in behind the Dutch leader some two seconds adrift with a superb faultless performance.

Great Britain’s hopes rested with Ben Maher and Point Break but, having accelerated into the aquamarine double at fence three, they paid the price when toppling the vertical out. However, the pair cruised home carrying just those four faults in a time of 42.53sec to keep them in the hunt in this high-faulting decider.

Rolex grand prix hinges on final rider McLain Ward for USA

The only other clear of the afternoon came from young Belgian talent Gilles Thomas with the 10-year-old Ermitage Kalone, but this pair were significantly slower than their Dutch and Italian rivals.

The result of this thrilling and unusually dramatic contest hinged on the lightning quick final rider, McLain Ward of USA riding Ilex. Having pivoted round the track with great agility, almost matching the pace set by Harrie Smolders and Monaco, there was heartbreak for the US rider at the final vertical, which fell just as the clock stopped in what would have been a winning time of 41.48sec. But, with four faults to add, it dropped McLain to fourth behind the podium finishers of Harrie, Giulia and Gilles and just ahead of Ben Maher in fifth.

Harrie Smolders is now on target for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping

This was a milestone victory for Harrie to celebrate in Geneva’s Rolex grand prix and he will arrive in his home leg of the series, the Dutch Masters, early next year as the live contender for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping.

“It’s fantastic to go there now as the live contender. It’s my first Rolex Grand Slam, I’m so happy,” said Harrie.

‘Too challenging to understand’: why top rider is calling for showjumping to be made more accessible

The Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping returns this Sunday at the CHI Geneva (11-15 December) with Martin Fuchs the live contender. The Swiss showjumper will be hoping to continue his journey towards the Grand Slam bonus in Sunday’s Rolex grand prix. But Martin will also be contesting the prestigious Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final in the iconic Palexpo Arena on Friday evening, just one of the highlights in an action-packed schedule of top tier equestrian action.

Martin returns to his home show of Geneva on the back of a thrilling victory in the previous leg of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, the CPKC International grand prix presented by Rolex at the Spruce Meadows Masters tournament with his super grey Leone Jei.

Martin is definitely the one to beat, having become the first rider to win consecutive Rolex Grand Prix titles at Geneva in 2019 and 2021 and he will be hoping to become the second rider to win the Rolex Grand Slam after Scott Brash took the crown in 2015.

Martin Fuchs describes arriving in Geneva as the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping live contender as “an incredible feeling” and he brings “a lot of confidence”.

“Competing at such prestigious and unique events is already a privilege, but winning one of the Rolex grand prix events at a Major makes it truly special,” he says. “The four Rolex Majors are the shows that I enjoy the most and look forward to all year round, so the goal is to always be in the best form for these events.

“Having the CHI Geneva in our home country makes it even more special, and the atmosphere and support of the fans makes it one of my favourite shows,” he continues. “I don’t really train the horses differently, apart from jumping indoors before the CHI Geneva and outdoors before the CSIO Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament.

“I am lucky because Leone Jei has been everywhere and has seen all the different arenas – he doesn’t mind what type of surface he jumps on.”

Martin Fuchs on Leone Jei: “A phenomenal horse”

Martin describes the flying grey Leone Jei, his winning partner on many occasions, as “phenomenal”.

“He is so motivated and loves to jump – no fence is too big to him, and no arena is too much for him. He can jump anything, anywhere,” says Martin. “He has a fantastic stride, huge scope and is very careful.

“Every time I enter the arena for a Rolex Major or a big Rolex grand prix, I feel like we can win it. It is a great feeling to have, to be able to really rely on your partner. I know that when I do my job well, he will jump a clear round.”

Martin says that trust has to be built up over time, however.

“My partnership with Leone Jei started over six years ago when I rode him for the very first time, and over the years we have become closer and closer,” he explains. “It is important to try to understand your horse, what is best for them and how best to strengthen your bond.

“Over the past year-and-a-half I feel as if Leone Jei and I have got even stronger and closer, and this has resulted in our most successful season together to date. He loves the CHI Geneva and I love it, too. We will both be giving our very best to try to make it a brilliant experience and claim the title once again.”

“We should work on making showjumping more accessible to a wider audience”

Martin is passionate about the sport of showjumping but raises concerns about keeping the industry relevant.

“I believe we should work on making showjumping more accessible to a wider audience,” he says. “Not necessarily the competitive showjumping itself, but the structure – such as the calendar, the types of shows, and the various series – can be challenging for someone outside the sport to understand.

“For example, there is the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, the Rolex Series, the FEI Jumping World Cup, and the FEI League of Nations. To someone who doesn’t know the sport, distinguishing between these can be confusing, particularly when trying to grasp the differences between the Rolex events, which feature the best riders and highest-level competition, and other series that offer significant prize money but are less prestigious.

“I think in every sport or profession we all strive for perfection – we all want to be the best at what we do, aim for precision and excellence, as well as having a strong work ethic every day,” he adds.

So might we see Martin Fuchs back in the winner’s enclosure at the CHI Geneva this week?

“The CHI Geneva is a highlight of the year for me,” he says. “The home crowd, the rich history, and the unique atmosphere in the arena make it truly incomparable.

“Winning there was incredibly special, and coming close to repeating that victory is a huge motivator for me.”

You could own the Rolex Grand Slam trophy – in Lego splendour

Only one rider in the world has ever got his hands on the coveted Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping trophy – but now you can own it.

Or a Lego version of it, anyway. The grand slam has announced the “exciting launch” of a limited edition replica trophy, made of 177 Lego bricks.

“The coveted trophy, which to date has been won by only one rider – Scott Brash – has been reimagined into an interactive toy, perfect for the entire family, which will give fans an exclusive piece of the action,” a spokesperson for the grand slam said.

“The trophy reflects a perfect blend of creativity and craftsmanship. It will initially be available for purchase this December at the highly anticipated CHI Geneva, alongside the magical Christmas market located at Spruce Meadows.

“Fans will also be delighted to learn that the trophy will be available at all four Majors in 2025, namely the Dutch Masters, CHIO Aachen, the CSIO Spruce Meadows Masters tournament, and CHI Geneva.”

The Rolex Grand Slam links the grands prix at the four Majors; Aachen, Geneva, Spruce Meadows and Geneva. If the same rider wins three in a row, he or she wins an extra €1m (£832,000); and another €1m if he or she wins a fourth. There is also a €500,000 bonus for winning two in a row.

Scott made history in 2015 as the first – and so far only – winner of the Rolex Grand Slam. He won at Geneva in December 2014, Aachen in May 2015, and Spruce Meadows Masters in September 2015.

“The Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping trophy, upon which the Lego version was based, was designed over 10 years ago by the London jewellers Garrard, who were established in 1735,” the spokesperson said. “Made of sterling silver with two curved handles, the trophy stands on a silver base and a delicate ribbed spiral stem curves around the middle section moving up towards a tulip-shaped vessel.

“The trophy, desired by the world’s best showjumpers, was designed by the royal jewellery designer, Corinna Pike – her aim was to create a curved form inspired by nature to achieve a superbly harmonious design.”

What makes a great rider? ‘Understanding how to train a horse both mentally and physically,’ says Olympic champion

Olympic showjumping champion Christian Kukuk was recently honoured with the Peden Bloodstock FEI Best Athlete Award at a ceremony in Abu Dhabi, saying: “To be called the best athlete of 2024 is incredible”.

The German rider is known for his meticulous care and sensitivity toward his horses and, although he didn’t even start riding until he was a teenager, he has gone on to become one of the world’s most successful showjumpers. The pinnacle came this summer when he won individual gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics with his great partner Checker 47, who is co-owned by German football legend Thomas Müller.

So what are Christian Kukuk’s top tips for success and what does he think makes a great rider? Here is what he has to say on everything from how to train a horse to building the foundations of trust.

Christian Kukuk on building a connection with his horses: “Our bond is built on trust”

“I have known Checker 47 for four years and, during that time, we have built a strong connection. It takes a lot of work, just as it does in human relationships,” he says.

“We have shared both success and disappointment. Our bond is built on trust – he needs to trust me, and I need to trust him – and that trust led to a gold medal in Paris. It meant everything to have my family and friends there with me. Our sport is about emotions, and it’s sad if you can’t share these moments with those closest to you.”

Christian says his partnership with the “very special” Checker “felt like it was made for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games final”.

“The course wasn’t built just for an experienced rider or an experienced horse – it required an experienced combination,” he explains. “You had to know your horse inside and out, and they had to know you just as well. That is what made the course ideal for partnerships like Checker 47 and myself, Beauville Z and Maikel van der Vleuten, and Dynamix De Belheme and Steve Guerdat – we are all experienced pairs.”

Christian says he and Checker 47 have “grown together” over the past four years, culminating in some glittering successes in the run-up to Paris 2024.

“In every grand prix we entered, it felt like he knew exactly what he could do, and he knew and trusted what I could do,” says Christian. “That trust is the foundation of a great relationship between horse and rider – when you have trust, you have everything you need.”

You’re nothing without a strong, supportive team

“Having a great team supporting you is crucial to be a successful rider,” says Christian. “In showjumping, there is so much work – managing the horses, travelling, and training – so having reliable people around you is essential. Without a strong, supportive team, it would be incredibly difficult to perform and get the best results.”

How to train a horse to the top level: physical versus mental development

Christian Kukuk says he focuses on various aspects of a horse’s training at different stages of its development.

“For example, sometimes it is more important to focus on your horse’s physical abilities, or you may work on the mental side, or simply getting to know the horse better,” he says.

“However, in the end, the most important thing is making sure the horse is following you. You can train the physical elements as much as you like – jumping big fences or practising courses – but in the end what really matters is that the horse trusts you and follows your system and style of riding. If the horse isn’t on your side, success in showjumping is impossible.

“While physical training is key, it is just as important to understand how your horse thinks and what it needs,” continues Christian. “You need to know when to provide extra support or when to ease off the pressure and give them time doing something simple like hacking or lungeing. This balance of understanding both the mental and physical aspects of your horse is what makes a great rider.”

An important lesson

The German showjumper finished third in last year’s Rolex grand prix at CHI Geneva and his fans will see him in action when he returns there in December hoping to start the ball rolling on the prestigious Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, as well as lining up for the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final at the show.

“I have learnt that the Majors that make up the Rolex Grand Slam set the highest standard in our sport,” says Christian. “Both you and your horse must be prepared for any situation that comes from the courses.

“The CHI Geneva is one of the best indoor and special shows in the world. Each of the Rolex Majors that make up the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping is unique, and Geneva has its own distinct flare. The large arena, featuring the hill in the middle and the double of ditches in the Rolex grand prix, gives it the feel of an outdoor show, which is unique.

“However, the best thing about the CHI Geneva is the atmosphere – the crowd there is incredible. You can always feel their support. When you jump a clear round and the crowd goes wild; it is the most amazing feeling. It is the kind of emotional moment that us riders love.

“Finishing third in the Rolex grand prix last year made me both proud and happy – it was the moment I knew Checker 47 was ready for major championships. With the Olympics coming up, that Rolex grand prix result solidified in my mind that he was truly prepared, and it was then that I decided we should plan his year around the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

All-round horsemanship

Christian says the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping is the ultimate test of horse and rider as “it is not enough to just excel in a huge grass arena with massive fences, you also have to perform well in smaller arenas”.

“Only the very best horses can adapt to any ring and any situation,” states Christian. “For instance, Checker 47 placed third in the Rolex grands prix at both the Dutch Masters and Geneva, and he also jumped exceptionally well in Aachen. There aren’t many horses that can handle it all.

“Some riders are fortunate to have multiple horses – some are suited to large grass arenas, while others perform better in smaller sand arenas – but few can do well in every setting,” he says. “So far, only one pair has won the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping – Scott Brash and Hello Sanctos. The fact that only one combination has achieved this in all of these years shows how incredibly challenging it is.

“However, this is what makes it so exciting for us riders – we all dream of winning the Rolex Grand Slam once in our careers.”

Learnings from the football pitch

Christian Kukuk is a football fan and follows the German team Bayern Munich, where Checker 47’s part-owner Thomas Müller plays.

“Thomas and I have a very special relationship. He follows my equestrian career and I am following him in soccer,” explains Christian. “I don’t think he learns from me or that I learn from him, but what makes our relationship strong is that he is an athlete who understands the challenges of top-level sport.

“Thomas knows that, in showjumping, success doesn’t come every weekend, just as I know it’s the same in soccer – it is not possible to win every game,” he continues. “This shared understanding helps us handle the disappointing moments. Our relationship is full of emotion, but it is also very rational. We feel joy when we succeed, but we accept that we can’t be successful all the time – that is just the nature of both our sports.”

Don’t dwell on disappointment – or success

Like in football, it’s important not to dwell on either disappointment or success, Christian believes.

“You always need to prepare for the next game or the next show,” he says. “Growing up playing soccer made me familiar with competition, pressure, and the need to focus while staying present.

“In showjumping, you need to be focused for a shorter period of time – spending just 60 to 80 seconds in the ring, plus 30 to 45 minutes in warm-up – but it is crucial to be fully present with your horse. I believe that having learned this from soccer has really helped me, because at the highest level, being able to focus makes all the difference.”

“Creating a relationship with your horse doesn’t come overnight”

Christian’s advice to aspiring young riders is to “take your time”.

“Creating a relationship between you and your horse doesn’t come overnight,” he stresses. “If you have a disappointing moment – and there will be these moments – try to not get stuck in it.

“Try to see the positive and learn from the disappointing experiences and just remember to take your time.”

Harvard-educated, a brilliant horsewoman and full of great advice: why we’re watching and listening to top rider Lillie Keenan

One showjumper we always enjoy watching is rising star Lillie Keenan. The Harvard-educated US rider is brilliantly competitive, super stylish and, currently ranked 40th in the world, the 28-year-old is clearly achieving some outstanding results in the ring.

We also love her insightful post-competition interviews, so when she caught up with Rolex Grand Slam at the recent CSIO Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament, we listened. Here is what Lillie had to say.

“Our sport is unique because you have two souls, not one,” says Lillie Keenan

“You [and your horse] have to work together and you cannot yell at each other like you could with a human team-mate,” says Lillie Keenan, a regular five-star competitor and a winning Nations Cup team rider. “You have to find other ways to communicate and find your own language with each horse.

“You only achieve this by spending time with them and being very sympathetic is incredibly important.”

“A huge asset for women is the ability to communicate”

“One of the unique aspects of our sport is that men and women compete on a level playing field,” offers Lillie. “A huge asset for women is the ability to communicate in a way that may not come as naturally as for a man. You have to use your strengths.

“I have found that when I have a really strong partnership with my horse and they know that I trust them 100%, they then trust me more.”

“A lot of horses, that are considered the best, understand the sport”

Lilly’s grand prix horse is the 14-year-old grey Argan De Beliard known at home as Mr Consistency.

“He knows his job incredibly well,” she says. “He is always fighting for a clear round and he understands the role.”

While Lillie describes the Mylord Carthago HN x Ahorn gelding as “not the most exciting horse to watch”, she considers that one of his strengths.

“He is so reliable,” she explains. “Usually, for these big grands prix there are big tests and questions that have to be answered, and to have such a reliable partner makes my job a lot easier.

“He was an easy horse to trust and I am very grateful he let me be his person. At the highest level of the sport, with the risks you have to take, the strongest partnerships and relationships are the most successful.”

Lillie Keenan: “Ride like it’s the jump-off at the Olympic Games”

On dealing with pressure, Lillie says she thrives on it, but it’s all come through practice.

“The first time I went to a show on a pony, my mother told me that I needed to imagine I was going into the jump-off for the gold medal at the Olympic Games,” reveals Lillie. “I say this to people now and they think that it could not be true. But it is so very true!

“You often hear people say that you have to use pressure as an advantage and do not let it crush you. Of course, there are days that it can be very hard and the pressure can get the better of you. However, it’s something that I tried really hard to work on and I try to make the most of every opportunity that I get to jump at this level.

“There is nothing quite like practice and holding yourself accountable,” she adds. “I was always the type of kid in school that could be in tears before a test because I just couldn’t stand the idea of failure. I would say that that’s my personality type and probably why I’ve got used to a lot of pressure.”

“All athletes go through periods of self doubt”

Lillie jumped her first five-star class at the age of 17 and now receives training from Olympic medallist McLain Ward, who she credits for getting her self-belief back.

“When McLain started to help me, I had lost a lot of confidence in myself, and in my ability as a rider. I’m very open about that, because I think for young people it is important to see,” says Lillie Keenan.

“We watch all these riders that we consider superstars or just athletes in any sphere, and they all go through periods of self-doubt, but you don’t necessarily see that. Especially as a woman, I think it’s important to make clear that it is normal.

“McLain reminded me that I am good enough and that I have the ability to be the best. I repeat those words to myself every time, I feel like I could have done better. If he believes in me, then I must actually be good. I think I believe him more than I believe myself!”

But Lillie also holds dear some more words of wisdom from her mother, who reminds her that showjumping “is a choice”.

“When I’m really hard on myself, she likes to remind me of that,” says Lillie. “I think that it is incredibly valuable, because it is a choice – one that I’m very lucky to have.”

“Going to college with kids that didn’t know about showjumping was a gift”

Harvard-educated Lillie Keenan is grateful for the opportunity and the privilege of being able to pursue her education while still pursuing her showjumping career.

“It was never really a question, if I would go to college, but with riding it was always a choice,” she explains. “In a way I feel I have so much to prove, because I was given a leg-up and a lot of opportunity, and I don’t want to waste that.

“I am very aware of how lucky I am and really grateful for that. Going to college with kids that didn’t even know what I did or that sport is called showjumping was a gift, because I could fall off on Sunday in the biggest grand prix, or I could win, and on Monday morning, my classmates would have no idea, and I was just Lillie. That was such a privilege.”

“Self-worth is often defined by our most recent result and that can be incredibly debilitating,” says Lillie Keenan

“In any pursuit that someone is extremely passionate about, it’s so easy to get in your own head about it,” says Lillie. “I’d say that for most of the riders at this level, our self-worth is often defined by our most recent result and that can be incredibly debilitating.

“So I would say the number one lesson I learned is that life goes on, and we are so lucky to work with an animal, to be outside, to do something that is incredibly rewarding,” says the self-confessed “nerd”, who admits she misses her academic studies. “But I would say for my life, the biggest lesson is the perspective that it has given me and the immense gratitude that every day I am able to wake up and ride a horse.”

“Stay in school and don’t be afraid to reach out to someone you admire”

In return, Lillie has two pieces of advice for aspiring young riders.

“Number one is to stay in school as long as it is physically possible,” she says. “I get pushback on that. Obviously, not everyone has the opportunity that I did, but now post-Covid, the way that a lot of education has transformed to online means there are a lot more options.

“I still take courses online and try to expand my brain. In my opinion, it is incredibly important to just being a well-rounded person. Before I went to college, there were a number of riders that said to me: ‘Why are you bothering to do that? You have so much talent and you’re going to ride anyway, so why not just ride?’ But the sport is always going to be there and the horses are going to be there. In order for our sport to grow and keep up with the global dynamic and how the world is changing, it’s important to really push yourself and get educated.”

Secondly, she says, don’t be afraid to approach your heroes – and always watch and learn.

“You might get a ‘No’, but that’s the worst case scenario,” says Lillie. “There is so much opportunity now, between all of the livestreams – you can watch almost any grand prix in the world and if you can’t watch it live, you can watch it back.

“If you get the chance to go to a horse show, watch the warm-up arena. Often people overlook that, but that is really where you see a rider. The best riders don’t have one type of horse, they can ride multiple. So, watch and ask questions. I think you’d be surprised how willing the top riders are to help younger people.”

“The epitome of showjumping”

Lillie Keenan finishes up by talking about the elevation of showjumping to the level of sports like tennis “and the Major Grand Slam events that we all watch on TV”.

“We admire those athletes, and in this world, we have the same respect for the riders and horses that are competing at what would be the equivalent level,” she says. “To have the recognition and the support from a brand like Rolex and to put these events at the highest level is the pinnacle of our sport, as it would be in any sport.

“Everyone obviously would love to jump a championship, but really the best riders are able to perform, not in just one weekend, but over multiple events,” she adds.

“For any rider to go to any one of these Majors is a huge deal, but the fact that there are four Majors each year means that there is something that we can aim for every single year. The funny thing about dealing with horses is, obviously, it’s not just about the rider, the horse has to peak at the right time which requires some luck.

“You might miss an Olympic year or World Championship year, but every year that you have a super horse and you have that partnership, you can aim for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping,” she says. “I think it’s the pinnacle of showjumping.

“Whenever you get to jump in any of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Majors it is an incredible feeling – they are really the epitome of show jumping.”

‘I didn’t believe this would be possible’: $3m grand prix won in dramatic fashion

The 2024 running of the world’s toughest grand prix, the $3m (£1.7m) CPKC International presented by Rolex, was won in dramatic fashion by the superb duo of Martin Fuchs and Leone Jei at Spruce Meadows, Canada, on Sunday (8 September).

“It’s a great feeling to be able to secure a second win here,” said Martin, 32, who continues to forge an incredible legacy, becoming only the third competitor after Rodrigo Pessoa (2000 and 2001 on Gandini Lianos) and Scott Brash (2015 and 2016 with Hello Sanctos and Ursula XII) to land back-to-back grands prix in Calgary.

“I honestly didn’t believe after my rail down in the jump-off that it would be possible. Luck was on my side today.”

The Swiss rider was drawn first for a thrilling three-horse showdown, which neatly featured a mare, a gelding and a stallion. Martin thought he’d thrown away his chances in this third and final round when toppling the seemingly straightforward brown oxer at fence four under the shadow of the trees.

“I was upset with myself for not giving Leone Jei the best chance in the jump-off because I over-rode the oxer – I pushed him into the pole because I was thinking already about the leave-out to the vertical after it, instead of allowing him to jump the oxer and use his big stride to get there on five strides. I was mad at myself and it was a huge disappointment because I had two of the best riders in the world coming after me,” he said.

Unexpected faults for class debutant Darragh Kenny

The baton was passed to Ireland’s Darragh Kenny with Heathman Farm’s VDL Cartello but they succumbed to the same fence. The 17-year-old stallion has all the scope but is not the quickest and a surprising two time-faults also appeared as he crossed the line.

Very rarely does the time allowed play a factor in a jump-off but it emerged that renowned course-builder Leopoldo Palacios had cunningly squeezed the maximum time and it proved to be an innovative stroke of genius as the class unfolded.

“This is a very important grand prix, so it needs to be the biggest and most complicated every year,” he said. “I needed to force the last rider not to go slow and have it too easy – that was my thought, and I don’t know if it’s correct, but I thought, ‘This is what’s best for the sport’.”

CPKC International debutant Darragh reflected, “I thought if I can be smart, go quick enough but not take too much risk, that it could work out. I really didn’t expect him to have the third fence down as he was jumping so well.

“I then tried to go as fast as I could, but I was just too slow!”

Another past winner stakes his claim

A hush then descended on the packed stadium for the brilliant combination of Daniel Deusser and Killer Queen VDM, who lifted the title in 2022.

“I knew I had to go clear, but there was no option to go slow because of the short time allowed, so I was under huge pressure,” said the German rider, who remained clear until he felt the 14-year-old mare anticipating the turn left into the famous double of Liverpools, “so I had one stride less than I should have done” and their first pole fell.

With just Martin’s 40.22sec time now to beat, Daniel accelerated home, gambling with a flyer to the final wall – the same fence that Leopoldo used to conclude his tracks at the 2008 Olympics – but it was a risk too far and the pair crashed through it. Agonisingly, the clock stopped in what would have been a winning time of 39.58sec.

“There is a big question mark – what could you have done differently in that moment – but I tried to go fast to the finish line and she just got a bit lost,” Daniel said. “But I’m very proud that my mare jumped three fantastic rounds.”

Martin Fuchs: “You need to be 100% focused, confident and have a lot of courage to jump these huge fences”

Martin Fuchs, whose Olympic dream unravelled in Paris last month when he lost a stirrup in the individual final, has been on a remarkable comeback trail since, with wins in the Rolex grand prix at Dublin and the Nations Cup of Brussels with Conner Jei. Reunited with the “incredible” 12-year-old son of Baltic VDL, Martin paid tribute to Leone Jei, who has been placed in 12 of the 13 majors he’s contested, including winning the Rolex grand prix at Royal Windsor this year.

“These tracks are so challenging, you really need to be 100% focused, confident and have a lot of courage to jump these huge fences,” he said. “That’s why I love coming here to Spruce Meadows. It’s the hardest place to win and I’m very grateful to have such a wonderful partner who wants to win them as much as I do.”

Tim Gredley and Medoc De Toxandria produced one of the greatest performances of their lives to finish best of the British contenders. They jumped a tremendous double clear, just succumbing to a time-fault in round one, to finish fifth behind another past winner, Steve Guerdat with Venard De Cerisy, who mirrored Tim’s rounds but in a slightly quicker time for fourth.

News that the competition’s $3m prize-money is set to rocket to a record-breaking $5mfor next year’s 50th anniversary celebrations at Spruce Meadows will send shivers of excitement round these elite riders who will already be planning their strategy to win what will be the sport’s richest ever prize.

But Martin’s first consideration will be his journey on the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, for which he is the new live contender as the circuit moves to his home show of Geneva in December.

Canadian showjumper Kara Chad and her partner, British rider Matt Sampson, are one of the sport’s favourite power couples, both equally talented and competitive, and their impressive results speak for themselves.

But while Matt has long been a familiar name to British showjumping fans, you may not be as familiar with 28-year-old Kara, currently ranked 151st in the world. She has represented her native Canada at Nations Cups, the 2018 World Equestrian Games and she was reserve rider for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Kara grew up in Calgary, Canada, close to the world-famous Spruce Meadows venue, where she and Matt have amassed many successful results.

“The CSIO Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament is exceptional. As a Canadian and a Calgarian, I am very proud of the show and what the organisers have put on, and the community that has been created over the years,” says Kara of the tournament, which runs from 4-8 September this year.

“This incredible event has hosted the very best international showjumping horses and riders. The calibre of the competition is very special for me, my family, and many Calgarians. Spruce Meadows is making great strides in modernising its facilities, from the course designs to the materials they use; they keep up with the showjumping trends. The International Ring is a big grass arena and requires riders to gallop and make sure their horses are responsive and confident.

“The jump-offs during the competitions are some of the best in the world,” she adds. “Riders can really get their horses going forward and galloping around the course. When competing at this level, your horse must trust you, be brave, and feel comfortable performing in such a fantastic atmosphere.

“I believe preparation comes from experience in the ring. Spruce Meadows hosts a summer circuit, and those who compete there over the summer tend to do well at the Masters Tournament because their horses are familiar with the arena and the fences. If riders can participate in those events, it serves as excellent preparation. Competing at other Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Majors such as the CHIO Aachen, or at other big grass venues, provides great preparation for competing at Spruce Meadows.”

Talking about the legendary track set annually for the CPKC International grand prix presented by Rolex – reputed to be one of the most difficult in the world – Kara says, “Even though the grand prix isn’t until the afternoon, the course is usually set up in the morning. It’s quite interesting to watch riders walk it four or five times, analysing the best plan for themselves and their horse – it is something you don’t see often.

“Walking the course creates a really cool atmosphere with all the riders trying to approach it together, uncertain of what’s to come. It is super exciting!” she says.

Kara Chad on her partnership with “gifted horseman” Matt Sampson

Kara worked with Olympic gold medallist Eric Lamaze for several years and credits him for being “a big influence on my career”, but reveals how boyfriend of five-and-a-half years, Matt Sampson, continues to inspire her as they now run their showjumping business together.

“Matt is incredibly talented and I continue to learn from him every day,” says Kara. “He is my biggest supporter and provides constant emotional support. I love that we are able to compete together and against each other, and then at the end of the day have a debrief and plan for future competitions. While many more people have inspired me, Eric, my family, and Matt are my top three influences.

“We [Matt and I] learn something from each other every day! He is a fierce competitor and incredibly talented, I could not wish for a better partner. He knows horses so well and is a gifted horseman. We bounce ideas off each other all the time, which is extremely beneficial.

“It’s wonderful to have a committed partner by your side, going through all the ups and downs with you and someone who understands everything without needing words to explain,” she reveals. “That said, it’s not always easy to have your partner compete against you! I might have an excellent weekend while Matt doesn’t, or vice versa, which can be tough.

“Despite this, we have an incredible relationship and I’m fortunate to have Matt as a partner in life and in this sport. At times it can be very emotional, and having him to talk to is invaluable.”

A whole team striving for success

Kara also credits their “incredible team” – from the hard-working staff to owners and co-owners.

“There are so many in the equestrian community that have helped get both Matt and to where we are today,” she says. “We would not be here without our team’s hard work, dedication, and love for the horses. It sounds cliché but when things go well, it is not just mine or Matt’s success, it is our whole team’s.”

Kara’s top horse is 11-year-old five-star calibre Igor GPH (Harley x Crawford 5), with whom she recently won the CSI2* grand prix of Valkenswaard.

“You never truly know if your horse is capable of winning a Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Major title until you are in the moment, but Igor GPH definitely has huge potential and I think he would rise to the occasion,” says Kara. “My other horse, Quidamo F, is a bit older. I have had him since he was seven years old, we}ve been together for about seven years now.

“We’ve competed in the CPKC ‘International’ grand prix presented by Rolex at the CSIO Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament twice before, placing in one and unfortunately having a fault in the other. He is definitely capable of winning a Rolex Grand Slam Major but nowadays due to his age, we are selective about which competitions we enter him for. Spruce Meadows suits him perfectly, and he has had incredible results there, so I always plan to jump him at the venue.”

Kara Chad: “Women riders are getting stronger each year and are given more opportunities to advance”

Kara and Matt are also producing a raft of exciting younger horses for the future.

“Even when you feel you have the best plan; we are working with live animals, so anything can happen,” she says. “Regardless of all your hard work and dedication, it sometimes takes a bit of luck to win a Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Major.

“Our sport is a lifetime sport and there is a reason for that – it takes a long time to put things together and develop horses so that they reach their best ability. There is so much involved in our sport, so I think that winning a Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Major should be celebrated because it does not happen often during a rider’s career.

“Having been in this sport for so long, it’s easy to forget that it’s unusual for men and women to compete against each other,” says Kara. “I believe we give the men a real run for their money. Women riders are getting stronger each year and are given more opportunities to advance. I’m incredibly proud to be a female athlete in showjumping and I hope to inspire other female riders to do the same. In this sport, when working with horses, we are on an equal playing field which is great.”

So will Kara be bidding to win a Rolex Grand Slam Major of her own? She describes winning the Grand Slam, which only British showjumper Scott Brash has achieved, as “akin to winning an Olympic medal”.

“It doesn’t happen often, and when it does, riders should recognise what they have accomplished,” says Kara. “I hope to win not just one, but many. Fortunately, both Matt and I have time to reach this goal, as many riders in their sixties are still competing at the top level – so time is on our side!”

‘One horse will make dreams come true’: from a hot-headed foal to multi-grand prix winner, the story of Leone Jei

Swiss showjumper Martin Fuchs refers to the brilliant grey gelding Leone Jei as “such a special horse [who] makes all dreams come true”.

Having achieved a glittering array of accolades in their five-year partnership, including Nations Cup wins in Dublin and St Gallen, individual silver and team gold at the 2021 European championships. There have also been victories in the Rolex grands prix of Dinard, Geneva and most recently Royal Windsor, and not forgetting THAT epic final fence celebration when winning the Spruce Meadows $3million CPKC International grand prix presented by Rolex. So it’s no wonder the world number four rider rates the 12-year-old son of Baltic VDL so highly.

“I’m just so happy to have a horse like Leone Jei,” says Martin.

So how did this incredible partnership begin?

Leone Jei: continuing the line of a “special mare”

To tell the story of Leone Jei’s early days, we pass over to Adriana van Tilburg, who spoke to the granddaughter of the KWPN gelding’s breeder Gijs van Mersbergen, who sadly passed away before he could witness the Baltic VDL x Corland’s success.

“My grandfather purchased the Peter Pan daughter, Pardous, as a young mare, and she became the foundation mare of the line,” says Maartje van der Velden, who was heavily involved in her grandfather’s breeding business. “She was always a special mare – she was a gentle, quiet mare, but you could see her blood coming through when something was about to happen. She was also very gentle with us when we were little. We could connect with her foals.”

Maartje’s first memory of Pardous was when she was six and the mare passed away when she was 16.

“So I basically grew up with her,” says Maartje. “I think she passed her character on to her offspring – most of them were easy going and showed a lot of willingness to perform.

“The mother of Leone Jei, Dara, was a bit of a different story,” she explains. “She had a lot of character, not in a bad way, but my grandfather didn’t let us as small children go in with her alone. I personally never saw Pardous jumping, as she was only used as a broodmare with us, so it is hard for me to say what she has passed on to her offspring. My grandfather was a real fan of the Holsteiner-bred stallion Cardento [who competed at the 2004 Olympics] and he used him seven times for Pardous.”

Four of those offspring jumped at 1.40m and higher, but it was not just talent that Gijs was looking to breed, for he wanted his horses to have “good character” and to be able to trust his horses completely. One exception, however, was Leone Jei’s dam Dara, one such result of Pardous and Corland.

“She is quite a hot character,” continues Maartje. “We were not allowed to just be with Dara, my grandfather had to be with us. She has also passed that ‘hotness’ on to her offspring.

“We can proudly say that what she produced with Leone Jei is a truly exceptional horse – she is indeed the most special mare in this line. Dara and her mother Pardous were together for a few years with their offspring.”

All in the genes

The original plan was for Dara to compete in the sport, but it was too expensive and she was instead sold to family friend Ad van Hal after she had produced Idara, a full sister of Leone Jei. She continued as a broodmare, producing a full-brother to Leone Jei. She is now with the Mares Of Macha breeding enterprise.

Ad remembers the free jumping at the mare approvals in Esbeek when Dara’s dam Pardous was young.

“I said to van Mersbergen, ‘Watch this, she is going to jump out’ and he thought I was crazy,” he recalls. “Guess what? She jumped the line and then jumped over the 2m high fence that was supposed to keep the horses in. She didn’t even touch it.”

While Gijs bred some dressage horses, his heart was in showjumping.

“He thought it was very special that the horses were able to jump the high fences,” continues Maartje. “We also watched every big competition. He really liked the sport. Unfortunately, I never went to CHIO Aachen with my grandfather, but the plan is that I will go to next year’s Paris Olympic Games with my grandmother.

“We would also like to watch Leone Jei at another Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Major, that would be very special – this year we went to The Dutch Masters,” she says. “I keep the whole family informed about where Leone Jei is going to jump or his results. I try to keep track of all the horses from this line that my grandfather bred.

“We really liked how Leone Jei was as a foal and we used Baltic VDL again and that became the mare, Idara. She is now in the USA, owned by Dark Horse, funny enough Martin Fuchs competed with her in the USA at 1.45m. She was purchased first by Team Fuchs who sold her on to Dark Horse. Idara was not as hot as her mother and Leone Jei.”

Leone Jei: “His first rides under saddle were an adventure”

Leone Jei was originally named Hay El Desta Ali – meaning “It is what it is” – and he was described as a “hot-headed” foal.

“He had a super character, but he also showed a lot of blood especially when he got started under saddle,” explains Maartje. “The first rides under saddle were an adventure. Koen Leemans had difficulties with Leone Jei in the beginning, but they built up a partnership and he really knew how to use the blood Leone Jei has.

“The way he carries his tail is exactly the same as he did as a young horse – it is typical for him,” she reveals.

“Leone Jei’s success is always something that our grandfather dreamed of. He always said that it only takes one horse to make dreams come true. Our grandfather used to sit behind his computer and find all the information about his horses and look at all of the information on stallions. He went to many different stallion presentations and stallion competitions.

“We never dared to dream that Leone Jei would become the horse that he currently is. We owe all the success to the Peter Pan daughter Pardous. My grandfather passed away shortly after Leone Jei was sold to Martin.”

Maartje watched Martin and Leone Jei’s Spruce Meadows victory via the livestream with her grandmother.

“It was so exciting, especially when they had a touch on the first fence!” she recalls. “It was unreal to watch how Martin put his arm up when jumping the last fence. I was overwhelmed with a proud feeling. It is very special that a horse like Leone Jei was born in my grandfather’s stables.

“We are all part of this story.”

Martin describes the brilliant Leone Jei as having an “amazing mentality and is very ambitious – he always wants to try his best. Sometimes that does make it slightly harder because he has so much blood and is so keen, so I have to try to keep him as calm and relaxed as possible.”

When asked about the similarities between Leone Jei and his former great grey partner Clooney 51, Martin says he cannot compare the two.

“Clooney was the most successful horse in the history of Swiss showjumping, so I really cannot expect to have the next Clooney straight away,” he says. “However, I do think that Leone Jei has shown that he has all the qualities and I think that he is one of the best horses on the circuit.”

Travelling the world with elite rider Jessica Springsteen: exclusive insight from groom Josie Eliasson

Super groom Josefine Eliasson has been working for US showjumper Jessica Springsteen for the past eight years. She now follows the global international circuit with the Olympic silver medallist, looking after Jessica’s top horses including Don Juan Van De Donkhoeve and Hungry Heart.

“In the beginning, I was based at her home yard and I rode a bit,” says Josie. “But for the past six years, I have travelled the world with her and her horses as her show groom.”

Swedish-born Josie started riding when she was five or six and fell in love with horses.

“When I was slightly older, I had a nice young horse that I competed in Sweden,” she says. “The owner of the stables where I kept my horse competed regularly including in the national young horse championships and I would go with her and groom for her.

“I soon realised that I really enjoyed grooming and she was always very encouraging. She would say that I was very good at it and I remembered all of the important small details. I then went to visit a friend of mine, who at the time was working with horses in Switzerland,” she continues. “After only about two days, I knew it was what I wanted to do, so I asked if she knew anyone who needed help at their stables. That is when I got a job with Romain Duguet – I still had my horse, but I managed to lease her out, and I packed my bags for Switzerland as a permanent move.”

“Jessica Springsteen’s Olympic horse Don Juan is special”

After a year, Josie returned to Sweden, intending to get her HGV driving licence, but that’s when the job with Jessica Springsteen came up and she’s been looking after her talented string of showjumpers ever since.

“Our most special horse is Don Juan Van De Donkhoeve [pictured, below], Jessica’s Olympic Games horse,” says Josie. “I have an incredible bond with him. You spend so much time alone with your championship horses that you get to know them in a different way. As a groom, you always tell yourself you have a special bond with your horse, but I really think we do. For example, when I walk into the stable he will whinny for me but he doesn’t do that with a random person. He is very important to me – I am very emotional when it comes to him. He is a stallion, but he is the nicest stallion I have ever handled.

“Whenever I film Don [Juan Van De Donkhoeve] in the ring, I always seem to be giving my commentary of the round, telling him ‘You can do it!’” she reveals.

“Hungry Heart is another of our top horses who is competing at five-star level. He is 12 and has the biggest character in the stables. He is like a dog, you can play with him. I always joke that I think I could teach him to sit if I really tried. He is a very funny horse. We have a couple of other younger horses who are very exciting, I think the future is looking good.”

“You are always learning – listen to those with more experience”

Having now worked with Jessica Springsteen for eight years, Josie’s key piece of advice to grooms is to “listen to those who have more experience”.

“What I love about this profession is that you are always learning new things,” she says. “This is for two reasons – because the sport is evolving, as well as the fact that every single person has their own systems and techniques. Ask more questions – that is how you learn.

“I would also say do not be afraid. A lot of people are comfortable about where they are working, but they are not as happy as they could be. Of course, it is scary to try something new and to make a big change in your life, but it is so important to find the right place for you. You also have to love horses – as a groom, you have to work such long hours and there is a lot of travelling – but if you love horses it is the best job in the world.”

She also underlines the importance of knowing and understanding your horses.

“This way, you can notice the small signs that something might be wrong,” she explains. “The earlier you can see an issue, the more able you are to help them with whatever they need. It can be easier to spot this with your championship horses as you spend so much time with them and you get to know their habits so well, so you can see the smallest changes in their behaviour and do something about it before it becomes an issue.

“I think everyone has their own unique superstitions when it comes to the more important classes. No matter what, I always tell my rider to have fun, and I give the horse a little pat. Of course, during the bigger classes, I do this quietly so I do not interrupt my rider’s concentration and focus – but I still do it.”

Josie tries to ensure each of Jessica Springsteen’s horses keeps their routine as much as possible when they’re at shows.

“I think that the horse takes comfort from that,” she says. “Of course, at the bigger competitions, you will use things such as massage blankets more but I try to keep it as simple as possible and let them be horses.

“We try to work backward from a specific competition or goal to ensure that we have planned the best possible schedule for that individual horse. If we know that a horse jumps better during their second week of competition, then we will make sure that it competes two weeks in a row.”

As well as the big championships, Josie Eliasson and Jessica Springsteen travel to some of the biggest shows in the world including the Rolex Grand Slam and she says CHI Geneva is her favourite indoor show.

“The Rolex Grand Slam has had such an incredible impact on the sport,” she says. “It is the one thing that every rider aims for. Of course to win a Major and to become the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping live contender is amazing, but I think it is a huge privilege for riders to even be competing at these shows – they are the most prestigious in the world. To compete or even just be at a venue such as the CHIO Aachen or The Dutch Masters is incredibly special. They really increase the levels of visibility of the sports. It is always great to watch the highest level of sport, and this is what the sporting Majors provide. They provide a chance to win something beyond the normal competitions, such as the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. I think that even a non-equestrian fan would find this exciting to watch.”

Josie has launched her own online platform connecting grooms with riders.

“I did, and still do, get a lot of people asking about good staff and good jobs,” she explains about setting up Yeehaw. “There are so many good grooms and employers out there but it is hard to match them together. I wanted to create a platform where everyone would be able to see the opportunities available.

“It is not a hard industry to get into because there are so many jobs, but what is hard is finding the right place,” she offers. “Another goal is to try to raise the industry standards for grooms – to ensure that their working conditions are improved.

“Having a good grooming job makes you want to do it forever. But if in your first job you are not treated well then it can very quickly kill your interest in continuing in the business, even if you are very good at it. I just want to make sure that people get the best jobs because to me this is the best career you can have.”

In this week’s international showjumping news round-up, we celebrate grand prix success for Irish rider Jessica Burke and mega gelding Express Trend, while the return of the Rolex grand prix results in a “pinch me” moment for the winner, who will now be targeting the Rolex Grand Slam. There were also incredible scenes at WEF when a 49-year-old lawyer won a five-star grand prix at her first attempt, having only ever wanted to jump 1.20m.

Showjumping news: Jessica Burke and Express Trend scorch to victory

Ireland’s Jessica Burke teamed up with Liam Nicholas’s home-bred 14-year-old gelding Express Trend to win the CSI4* Equine America grand prix on the Andalucia Sunshine Tour in Spain. She smashed the target set by Britain’s Simon Crippen on Handsome (Toulon x Phin-Phin) from first draw after a three-way jump-off for this ranking class and Paris Olympic qualifier.

“It was an unbelievably brave and correct call by the team here at the Sunshine Tour to run the grand prix on the grass today – the ground is unbelievable,” said Jessica, describing the track as “very difficult” and “quite trappy”. “My horse feels in brilliant form. He hadn’t jumped on grass since Dublin last year, but once I jumped two fences in the warm-up, he felt amazing so I was quite confident.

“Express Trend is 14 and it’s only now I feel that we have the right ability, and I think that helped us a lot today.”

There were also wins for Matt Sampson with Geneve R on the big tour and Ellen Whitaker riding the nine-year-old Cornet Obolensky mare Korlenski in the 1.50m Ashford Farm Trophy ranking class.

“I have to pinch myself – this is unbelievable”: a memorable Rolex grand prix win and new Grand Slam contender

Next in this week’s showjumping news, we turn to Sunday’s Rolex grand prix at The Dutch Masters, which was won by home rider Willem Greve and Highway TN NOP after a thrilling nine-way jump-off, in which world number one Henrik von Eckermann and the great King Edward finished runner-up in their second big class on the trot. The Dutchman made masterful use of his last draw to swoop home just 0.04sec faster than his Swedish rival. He becomes the new contender for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping.

“I have to pinch myself – this is unbelievable,” said Willem. “Words cannot describe how I am feeling. I am so thankful for my horse for his courage and his mentality. It means so much to me to win in front of my home crowd – the history here is incredible, and it is an honour to add my name to the list of winners. I have been coming to the Dutch Masters since a was a small child, so to win here is a dream come true.”

Showjumping news: Graham Gillespie triumphs

On the Spring MET III, Oliva Nova, Spain, Graham Gillespie opened proceedings with CSI2* 1.45m grand prix victory on Veneno (Chacco-Blue x Baloubet Du Rouet) after a 15-way jump-off.

“Veneno has been on great form and I’m delighted with the win,” said the British showjumper. “It was a great week for the whole team.”

“I just wanted to jump 1.20m”: 49-year-old lawyer’s victory on five-star debut

Brazilian showjumper Luciana Lossio, 49, won at her first attempt at a five-star in the $385,000 Bainbridge Companies grand prix at Wellington International’s Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) with her long-time partner, 14-year-old Lady Louise Jmen.

“This is unbelievable – I’ve been with this mare for six years and in the beginning I just wanted to jump 1.20m, but we became so much more,” she said. “We went higher and higher and today I’m here in my first five-star and winning alongside these riders that I just enjoy watching.

“Lady Louise is so confident. She doesn’t change from day to night or from the grass to sand. She’s perfect,” said Luciana, who works full-time as a lawyer in Brazil; many of her family had travelled from her home town to watch. “Tonight was our night.”

‘An unbelievable feeling!’: 26-year-old left lost for words after landmark Rolex Grand Slam win

Richard Vogel, 26, has made a rapid ascent in the sport to reach number 12 in the world rankings, but on Sunday afternoon (10 December) he achieved a career best when winning his first showjumping Major, the Rolex grand prix of Geneva held at the city’s Palexpo in Switzerland.

Now, the young German rider will be bidding to continue his success in the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping and it’s all systems go to be ready for the next leg at the Dutch Masters in the spring.

“This is an unbelievable feeling in front of such a great crowd in such a prestigious competition,” said the German star, who finished over 2.5sec quicker than his nearest challenger, Irish showjumper Mark McAuley on the big-striding mare GRS Lady Amaro.

The Rolex grand prix of Geneva was won by first-drawn Richard’s extraordinary tight lines and sharp angles with the 11-year-old stallion United Touch S (Untouched x Lux Z) over an imposing track set for the seven-way jump-off . None of his rivals could get close to the winning time and this landmark success on the global stage now offers Richard the chance to follow up with one of the biggest prizes in the sport, the Rolex Grand Slam.

“It’s indescribable and I’m overwhelmed with what United Touch is able to do, especially in the first round – it’s really difficult for him because he has such a big stride, so sometimes he finds the lines short,” explained Richard. “But he gives everything and he was fighting for me today – he was fighting to be clear. I’m happy we pulled it off in the jump-off.”

The third of the double clears came from Christian Kukuk for Germany, a further 2sec behind Mark McAuley, on the super grey son of Comme Il Faut, Checker 47, to slot into third. Finishing fourth was Friday’s winner of the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final, Steve Guerdat – this time riding his European championship gold medal-winning mare Dynamix De Belheme.

Ben Maher was best of the Brits with Dallas Vegas Batilly, finishing on five faults in round one when the final oxer fell and he was one of nearly a third of the finishers to fall foul of the tight time allowed. The previous Rolex Grand Slam contender Martin Fuchs also finished with four faults in round one on Leone Jei.

‘Watch and learn, it’s so valuable’: wise words from the Rolex Grand Slam contender

This Sunday (10 December), Swiss showjumper Martin Fuchs will be bidding to keep his Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping dream alive with victory at CHI Geneva.

Martin, 31, became the live Grand Slam contender after his outstanding grand prix victory at the Spruce Meadows Masters tournament riding Leone Jei and he will be lining up alongside some of the world greats in Sunday’s grand prix, a class he’s won twice before, after an “incredible year jumping at the highest level of the sport”.

“I am extremely excited to be coming into my home Major, CHI Geneva, as the live contender for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping,” says the world number five ranked rider of “one of the best shows in the world”.

“Riding in front of a Swiss crowd, with all of their support is amazing.

“I love having my family and friends there supporting and watching me, it really motivates me to do well and make them proud.”

The team and individual European champion credits his team as “vital to my success”.

“So much goes on behind-the-scenes,” he says. “My parents have been fundamental in building a special team around me and this allows me to really focus on my training and doing well in the ring. I do not have to think about anything else apart from training and competing, as my team manages everything else.

“I have some great grooms that look after our horses, I would not have this amount of success without my grooms,” he stresses.

Martin Fuchs: ‘Growing up, you watch your idols compete and win’

Martin reveals the importance of the showjumping Majors in the calendar and how he has been inspired.

“They are the ones that every rider aims to win and dreams of competing at when they are growing up,” he explains. “They are the pinnacle of our sport – all the greats have competed at these Majors.

“Growing up, you watch your idols compete and win at the Majors. This makes you so motivated and driven to train and do well in competitions, so that one day you can join them at these venues and to be perhaps fortunate enough to win one.

“It is extremely important that this opportunity is offered to the next generation as they will gain priceless experience competing at a Major,” Martin continues.

“Competing alongside the best riders in the world allows you to watch and learn from them – which is so valuable. I was very fortunate when I was younger to compete at the Swiss five-star shows, which gave me the opportunity to ride at the highest level as a young rider, even though I wasn’t at the top level yet. I learnt so much from these incredible opportunities.

“When you go back home, you have so much you want to work on and many additional goals – it is inspirational.”

Away from the ring, Martin loves producing his young horses.

“It is incredibly rewarding watching a horse develop to the top level,” he explains. “It is a very satisfying part of our job. In our sport, you never get bored, each horse is so unique, which means that every day is different. This makes you become a better rider and horseman to try to get the best out of each individual horse as well as trying to provide them with the best life possible.”

CHI Geneva: not just the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping

As well as competing in Sunday’s 1.60m Rolex grand prix at CHI Geneva, Martin Fuchs will line up for Friday night’s 22nd Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final. His opponents are Shane Sweetnam (IRL), Harrie Smolders (NED), Max Kuhner (AUT), Simon Delestre (FRA), Julien Epaillard (FRA), Steve Guerdat (SUI), Kent Farrington (USA), world number one Henrik von Eckermann of Sweden and Great Britain’s world number two Ben Maher, who won the prestigious class in 2021 on Explosion W.

“This was one of my favourite classes to win so far in my career,” says Ben. “The competition is so unique and the crowd and atmosphere that’s created in Geneva is like no other indoor arena. Explosion showed that evening why he’s such a great champion.”

Other British riders heading to CHI Geneva this week are the rider in-form Harry Charles and Scott Brash, while Robert Murphy and Claudia Moore will be contesting the under-25 classes and eventers Alex Bragg and Kirsty Chabert will be tackling the popular indoor cross-country.

A strong Irish contingent of Bertram Allen, Daniel Coyle, Mark McAuley and Conor Swail join Shane Sweetnam among these year’s CHI Geneva entries, and other big names include Jessica Springsteen, Peder and Jens Fredricson, and Daniel Deusser, and H&H will be bringing you coverage all the action.

‘We are part of the family, not just a groom’: behind the scenes with Harry Charles’ groom Georgia Ellwood

High-flying British showjumper Harry Charles’ groom Georgia Ellwood has been part of the hugely successful Heathcroft Farm team for four years. As show groom, she has established herself as a key part of Harry’s success at some of the biggest shows on the international circuit, travelling to the likes of the Tokyo Olympics, the Rolex Majors, European and World Championships, and World Cups.

Georgia, who was recognised at last month’s British Showjumping awards as groom of the year, took some time out of her busy schedule to chat about her role looking after nine horses in Harry’s string.

“They are all different ages and have different levels of experience,” Georgia explains of her charges. “Romeo 88 and Balou Du Reventon are our older and more experienced horses. Balou du Reventon is an absolute gem – he is the yard’s favourite at the moment. He is a stallion but does not act so at all – he is so sweet. We call him the old grandpa of the yard.

“On the other hand, Romeo 88 is more of a handful than Balou. He is quite grumpy but can also be very affectionate at the same time. He wants the attention, then once he has it he changes his mind.”

According to Georgia, one of her favourite younger horses is rising star Sherlock, a Belgium-bred 10-year-old son of Bisquet Balou VD Mispelaere.

“He is the most lovable little thing that you could ever come across,” she reveals. “He is cheeky and very sweet, and he gives everything when he is in the ring which is so nice to see. I am sure that Harry would agree with me that he is a little trooper.”

She describes Malcolm Pyrah’s home-bred eight-year-old Dunroe Quality, known at home as Bandit, as “very special”.

“He is incredibly scopey – he is like a spring,” she says. “He is very cool but comes with some challenges. He loves to test me on the ground, but he becomes a different horse when Harry rides him. He is one of the best young horses that I have ever seen. I am hoping that in the future he will continue to develop, and I really think he will be something very special to the sport of showjumping.

“All the horses have different characteristics; you definitely have to spend some one-on-one time with them to get to know them.”

Georgia Ellwood: ‘A lovely yard to be a part of’

Georgia describes being part of Harry Charles’s hugely successful team, based at Heathcroft Farm in Hampshire, as “truly exciting”.

“At Heathcroft Farm we are part of the family, not just a groom,” she says. “Peter Charles trusts us and that means a lot to us. He is extremely involved in the yard but at the same time, he likes us to have our independence. It is a lovely yard to be a part of. The family is amazing to us, which helps us love our jobs. They are just so nice to be around.”

During her time as Harry Charles’ groom, Georgia has accompanied the world’s leading under-25 rider to some of the biggest competitions in the world, including flying the British flag at the Rolex Majors, Tokyo Olympics, European and World Championships, Nations Cups and World Cups.

“I have noticed a significant difference in his riding,” she says. “He is such a chilled person to be around. At the same time, when he is at the bigger shows, he wants to do well and so he sometimes places pressure on himself. I try to remain calm and quiet to help him out.

“Harry is a perfectionist and after working here it is clear to me how hard he works. He is one of the hardest-working riders that I have ever seen. He wants it so much.”

Georgia describes being recognised by British Showjumping as groom of the year as “amazing”.

“It was great to be recognised – we all put in so much hard work and the hours are long, so having that recognition meant the world to me,” she says.

“When I first started in the sport, there was a division between the riders and grooms. Whenever a rider won a class, the spotlight was placed on the rider, the horse, and the owner. But in the past year or two, the grooms have come to be recognised. This is great and makes a difference.

“We work so hard behind the scenes,” she adds. “There are so many people in the teams behind each of the riders and their horses, including trainers, farriers, vets, and business managers, and everyone’s role is vital, as we work in a team sport.”

Georgia has always been interested in horses and competed through her childhood.

“As I got older, I began to recognise that I was probably not as good as some of the other young riders, so I decided to switch to grooming and I got a job when I was 15 mucking out stables,” she says. “It escalated quite quickly for me to my first full-time job as a show groom.

“I enjoyed the fact that I was still part of a team and got to ride,” she adds. “Being around a rider who competes at the top shows definitely gives you a buzz. My advice for the younger generation is that being a groom is hard work and it is tiring. But when something clicks and goes right, it is just an unimaginable feeling. Just keep working hard and the results will show.”

Life as Harry Charles’ groom: ‘I was immensely proud’

The best parts of the job, says Georgia, are winning, and working with and learning about new horses, “watching them develop”.

“When they get older and they jump in their first grand prix, it’s a lovely feeling,” she says. “I definitely feel proud to be part of this.

“I really enjoy attending the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Majors as they are so well organised,” adds Georgia. “They have not just thought of the riders, but they also focus on the wellbeing of the horses. As a groom, this is so important for us. The grooms are treated and viewed the same way as riders, and that is one of the nicest things. The atmosphere at the Majors is incredible. CHIO Aachen is one of my favourite shows to attend. The Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Majors are definitely some of the best shows in the world.”

Georgia underlines the “significant effect” the Rolex Grand Slam has had on the sport.

“It has opened doors for young riders and grooms, and provided access to different types of venues,” she says of the “amazing” events, which have “raised the level” of the sport.

“They are so well organised and hosted in great locations. The Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Majors have had a significant impact on the grooms – they have really recognised us and enabled us to have a say on things.”

Looking back on the past few years, Georgia says she has so many proud memories, but Harry’s bronze medal-winning performance at last year’s world showjumping championships stands out.

“Harry jumped an amazing clear round on the final day to secure the medal,” remembers Georgia. “Another highlight was the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on the first day when Harry jumped clear. I was immensely proud.”

Georgia describes the grooms’ community as “extremely close”.

“We are a big friendship group,” she says. “We see each other week in and week out so you form great friendships. It is a nice community of people.

“It is a very supportive atmosphere as well – if you need help or are struggling, someone will come and help you,” she adds. “There is not a bad person in the grooming community. We are all very lucky that we have one another and that we support each other as it can get slightly overwhelming at some points.”

Scott Brash: eight years on since he made showjumping history – and which horse he nearly picked over Hello Sanctos

“There was certainly something different about the atmosphere,” says Scott Brash, looking back on the day he made history eight years ago when he became the first winner of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping.

Scott won CHI Geneva in December 2014, CHIO Aachen in May 2015, and all that was left was to secure the win at the Spruce Meadows Masters. And he did just that with Hello Sanctos on 14 September 2015, taking home €1.3 million (then £950,000).

Last month Rolex celebrated the Grand Slam of Showjumping’s 10-year anniversary by hosting a round table event with Rolex testimonee Scott Brash at the Spruce Meadows Masters, where he discussed the highs of winning, what the Grand Slam has done for the sport, why Hello Sanctos was not necessarily his first pick for that historic day, and what the future holds.

Remembering that Sunday morning at Spruce Meadows in 2015, Scott says he arrived at the showground early to check out the course with no one else around, before riding Hello Sanctos in preparation for the grand prix that afternoon.

“I remember working him in and just knowing that he felt really good. I think he was probably the fittest I’ve ever had him in his life,” explains Scott.

“One of the great aspects of my riding style is that the more important the competition is, the more focused I become. I was certainly very focused on that day and totally focused on what was right for Hello Sanctos. I kept his same routine, because at the end of the day, he didn’t know that he was jumping for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, to him it was just another day and another course, so we just focused on beating the course.”

And what does the atmosphere feel like when someone is on the cusp of winning the sport’s richest prize?

“There was certainly something different about the atmosphere; I remember all the riders standing at gate while I was entering. Although I was very focused, you could see it and sense it,” says Scott.

“When I rode in, you could hear a pin drop. I don’t think there was much difference in the way my fellow competitors acted, but perhaps it was just a matter of respect such as providing me with more space in the warm-up – no one wanted to be in the way, which was appreciated.”

Scott and Hello Sanctos were the only combination to jump clear in the final round that day and Scott remembers feeling “all sorts of emotions”.

“One certainly was relief,” he explains. “However in a weird sense, one was sadness. My team and I had worked towards the goal of achieving the Rolex Grand Slam for such an extensive period, for it to suddenly be completed, it was emotional.

“We have some incredible photographs of that day, as you can imagine, and Hello Sanctos looked a million dollars. It was an amazing day in my career. I remember it so clearly; as an example of just how fit he was, even when we were walking out of the ring, I noticed he had not even broken a sweat, he was in that great a shape.”

But enjoying such highs can also be followed by lows – and added pressure explains Scott.

“After winning team gold at the London 2012 Olympics, and after completing the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, I remember feeling a little low period, questioning what was next – but I think that’s very normal,” he says.

“I actually talked to Bruce Springsteen once about a musician’s career and why things can go wrong sometimes. He said that while performing, one experiences such an adrenaline rush and intense atmosphere, it can be a shock when walking off stage to nothing; there is naturally an experience of a low. I certainly felt this after winning those major events; there was absolute joy and fantastic celebrations afterwards and a couple weeks later, I naturally experienced a low.”

The talent of London 2012 team gold medal-winning Hello Sanctos was unquestionable, but Scott reveals the Quasimodo Van De Molendreef would not have been the first pick for Spruce Meadows that year.

“Hello Sanctos did not like jumping in the arena at CHIO Aachen – not everyone knows that,” explains Scott. “It was the one ring that he felt uncomfortable in. I attended Aachen with him, and while it wasn’t too bad I came out thinking ‘Why did it not go so well?’. I had two down in the grand prix, but it felt like I was riding for my life. I then met Katharina Offel, who rode him when he was younger, and she said, ‘He does not like Aachen does he?’. He had jumped there previously with Katharina and was eliminated. So that joined up the dots for me.

“When I won at CHI Geneva, I had two top horses, Hello Sanctos and Ursula XII. Ursula is made for the likes of Spruce Meadows and Aachen, and if she had been fit, I would have taken her to Spruce Meadows. So, it left me in the position of taking Hello Sanctos or not attending.”

When it comes to personalities, Scott says it was how clever Hello Sanctos was that “set him apart”, and Scott places huge importance on getting to know horses as individuals.

“Hello Jefferson [Scott’s current top horse] has all the attributes that one needs to win a grand prix. He is extremely talented; he is really sharp and strong minded which is great, but he has a busy brain, so he has to come out of the stable a lot more than in comparison to other horses,” he says.

“I have to put a lot of work into him compared with what I did with Hello Sanctos for example. However, Hello Jefferson is more experienced now, I believe as he grows older, he is developing into a better horse. Hello Sanctos, if I’m honest when I first tried him, I didn’t think he had the scope to ever manage Spruce Meadows – that just shows how amazing horses are. When a horse is confident and really trusts a rider, they can succeed and jump fences far bigger than one might think. We had a fantastic partnership and Sanctos really grew into his scope.”

And when it comes to stars of the future, Scott has his eye on a few.

“We are breeding from Ursula XII and a couple of our best mares at the moment, and we have been bringing some mares down to my yard in England from my family in Scotland, to break them in,” he says.

“I have a couple of two-year-old’s currently – and I’ve come away thinking ‘This one could jump Spruce Meadows one day’. This is certainly what I look for when I am trying horses. It could be viewed as a downside as you know the level of horse you need in order to win the big majors, so you can end up being slightly too selective. But Hello Sanctos is the perfect example – it can take time to make a horse, and we had to improve the scope in him from being confident to being experienced.”

Scott to this day remains the sole winner of the Grand Slam title – so can it be won again?

“It can definitely be won again – anything is possible, but everything has to go right on the day. In our sport we are working with a living animal, and sometimes things can go wrong that can be out of our control,” he explains.

“The year after winning the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, Ursula XII was very close. She was second in CHIO Aachen, we won at Spruce Meadows, and came third in CHI Geneva. I remember thinking that we should have won Geneva – it is one of the rounds that still haunts me for losing by such a small margin. I was last to go with four tenths of a second too slow – I have never been so disappointed coming home from a show.”

Scott says the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping has been “amazing” for the sport.

“It has been a great opportunity for all the riders, and I think it has really improved our sport. The creation of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping has given us all major goals to aim for during the year. It brings out the best horse and rider combinations, those that are at the top of their game want to be at these majors. We are all very thankful for it,” he says.

“The sport has significant expenses, something a lot of people may not realise, and it can be especially difficult to travel horses around the world. I believe that it is great to be rewarded in that sense for sure. The larger the purse, the higher the interest in the competition from riders and the audience. It attracts the best in the sport. But what I will say, when I was competing for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, even if there wasn’t a big prize money, I was still desperate to try and make history and to achieve the title.”

Showjumping groom Kerry Finch has one of the most coveted jobs in showjumping as she has been John Whitaker’s travelling groom for the past five years.

She and John have recently returned from Calgary in Canada, where John was in action at the CSIO Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament, one of the most prestigious events in the showjumping calendar. Kerry was looking after John’s three top horses Equine America Unick Du Francport, Sharid and Green Grass.

“We flew over to Calgary after competing at the Brussels Stephex Masters in Belgium,” explains Kerry. “We stayed with Helena Stormanns in Eschweiler for five days after Stephex, before travelling on to Canada.

“My journey to the airport only took an hour which was great – I arrived there at 3am to check on the horses before they flew. After that, I travelled from Brussels to Paris to catch our flight to Calgary, and we arrived two-and-a-half hours before the horses landed to ensure that everything was OK.”

Kerry describes 15-year-old gelding Equine America Unick du Francport, a son of Zandor and with whom John Whitaker helped Great Britain secure Nations Cup victory at Hickstead this summer (pictured above), as “very special in his own way and very quiet”.

“You cannot be sharp around him, you have to remain quiet as he is quite a sensitive horse in that respect,” reveals Kerry. “At the same time, he knows what he wants, and does what he wants. If you are hand-grazing him and he sees a spot of grass that he wants, he will head there and will not go where you want him to until he gets his way. Otherwise he is a really easy horse to look after.”

Frank’s travelling companion Sharid is “another lovely horse”, who is “a gold medallist when it comes to sleeping”.

“They know each other really well and have a habit of whinnying after each other, but they do not stress out if one has left the stable,” says Kerry. “You know that something is not right when Sharid does not go back to bed after breakfast to sleep!”

Kerry’s trick to settling the “sharp” Sharid when John gets on board is to have lots of treats at the ready.

“He has become so used to this routine that now he just stands there looking at me whilst expecting a treat,” says Kerry. “Horses learn very quickly.”

Meanwhile Lynne Barker’s Luidam son, Green Grass, who is usually ridden by Paul Barker but is often “borrowed” by John for the big shows, loves food and rolling.

“All the horses are lovely. They all have different personalities,” says Kerry. “They are spoilt really!”

Kerry previously worked for John’s brother Michael Whitaker for 13 years and Billy Twomey for six years. She originally joined John Whitaker’s team as a freelance groom for one month, but “never left”.

“It is really easy working for John; everything is really old school and simple,” she explains. “If you find a bridle that works for a horse, you do not change it. My horse has had the same bridle for the past three-and-a-half years – that is how it works. Things are simple, and if there is a problem we just deal with it. We are not into having horses treated every six weeks, but if they need treatment, they will receive it.”

“John Whitaker never stops – but he’ll always find time for an autograph”

Kerry says that 68-year-old John Whitaker never stops – even when he is back at home.

“He is up in the morning tacking up his own horses and riding them,” says Kerry. “Afterwards, he looks after the cows and the hay on the farm, or anything that needs mending or fixing on the farm. He is really humble; nothing goes to his head. If anyone approaches him for an autograph, he will always stop and talk to them for five minutes. It is never too much for him.”

She puts John’s longevity in the sport down to “not giving up – he just keeps going”.

“There is no determination to outprove anyone or anything – it is just the way he is,” says Kerry. “He is someone that gets on with it, and who continually keeps going. I think the day he stops will be the day that the world does not have a John Whitaker. Age does not define him!

“Five years ago, John bought Equine America Unick Du Francport who was quite the character,” she adds. “He was difficult and would stop and spin when things upset him. John did not have a grand prix horse at that time, Argento was at the end of his career, so we were not entering the big competitions.

“It was two years of grafting, doing all the tours and the county shows in order for Equine America Unick Du Francport to settle down. John was determined and kept going until the penny dropped. If you look at them now, they are unstoppable. In the past few years, they have formed quite the partnership.”

According to Kerry, the grooms and horses enjoy excellent facilities at major shows such as Spruce Meadows, which has spacious stables and paddocks that they can turn the horses out in, while everything is “incredibly clean and tidy”.

“There is no other show that can compare to the CSIO Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament in the world,” she says. “CHIO Aachen is an incredible show that is brilliant to attend, but Spruce Meadows enters a whole new level.

“They also provide shuttle services for the grooms which makes life easier. The organisers have provided areas where we can hand-walk the horses and we are not restricted to certain areas. The facilities are just top-class. There is no other show in the world that will go above and beyond what they do,” says Kerry, who also cites CHI Geneva as a “beautiful indoor show”.

Life as a groom: “a supportive community”

The Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament is always run in September, meaning visitors and organisers need to be prepared for all weathers.

“I have attended the show in the past when it has snowed and straight away they began shovelling the show by hand,” remembers Kerry. “In 2005 it rained for two weeks straight – I have never seen anything like it. They were proactive by pumping water off the main rings.

“The ground held up so well, so we were able to still jump on it. When you have a problem they sort it – it is truly one of my favourite shows! All of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping Majors go above and beyond. They set up areas where the grooms can get coffee and other similar things as well, and if there is a problem they do everything they can to help solve it.”

According to Kerry, overall the grooms are a “supportive community” and in Spruce Meadows the grooms arranged together what time to get the shuttle to do the night checks.

“Some people only have one horse and they are always happy to help out those who have a few!” reveals Kerry, who has been working as a groom for 30 years.

“It is the simple things that are important. For example, I asked someone to help me during the Nations Cup parade. Everyone is really helpful, and this is very important in the grooming industry.

“A lot of people come into it for the money, but it is important to be passionate for the job and not look at the hours involved,” stresses Kerry. “It is as difficult as it sounds – you are there for the horses. It is a way of life and not just a job.”

Kerry emphasises that grooms need to put their heart and soul into the job “for it to be done properly”.

“It is not easy!” she says. “You cannot think that you are better than anybody else. The mantra should be that if you do not know, you should ask for help. A lot of younger grooms that come in today, do not want to take advice from the older grooms – but they should be like a sponge learning from everyone around them. I learnt from doing exactly this. The first time I flew to Spruce Meadows, I had never flown with horses before. I was only 20 and I learnt from all of the other grooms around me.”

Kerry is also quick to stress the importance of the whole team involved with John Whitaker.

“There is definitely a strong team aspect, as without everybody pulling together and doing their job, we would not be successful,” she explains. “It is vital for every team member to constantly coordinate with one another to ensure that everyone is kept in the loop. Everyone plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and wellbeing of these horses; it is not just the people who attend the shows, it’s also everyone that remains at home.”

‘I wanted to change the bit, Dad said just ride better!’ Special horse delivers dream win in $3m grand prix

“He’s such a special horse. He gave everything today,” said Martin Fuchs of the 11-year-old stunning grey gelding Leone Jei, who jumped the only triple clear to win the $3m (£1.76m) CPKC International presented by Rolex at the Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament in Canada (6-10 September).

Martin, who was on the Swiss team that came sixth at the European Showjumping Championships in Milan with Leone Jei the previous week, also became the live contender for the next leg of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, at Geneva, which he won in 2019 and 2021.

“It’s one of my biggest dreams to win here,” said Martin. “My father Thomas was here plenty of times and quite a few times he was placed well in the grand prix, but he never managed to win. He always said this is the best show in the world and he pushed me to win one day here, and it’s today. It’s just wonderful.”

The renowned class, which features fences from previous championships including the Tokyo Olympics, is known as one of the most difficult in the world – and Leopoldo Palacios’ technical track delivered on expectations. The first real test of scope was a combination at fence four, a triple bar on a forward two strides to an oxer. The questions continued right to the end with a formidable final line in the first round, a 1.62m vertical then a steady six strides to a triple combination, catching out 10 of the 34 starters. It was then down to the final, and biggest fence on course, an oxer stretching 1.85m wide.

The first round produced only five clears, and the top 12 came back to jump another full second round in reverse order of faults and time. Tiffany Foster and 13-year-old gelding Figaro, and Martin and Leone Jei, left the fences up second time around to go head to head in the jump-off. Silence fell on the famous international arena as Tiffany set off, but when she knocked the second part of the double, it all came down to Martin to deliver the clear, and Leone Jei was happy to oblige, looking eager all the way and stopping the clock on 43.58sec.

“I had a scary moment in the first round where he jumped fantastic up to the Canadian planks, and then he jumped even higher and jumped me out of the saddle and I lost my stirrup and my left rein for a few strides,” said Martin. “Thank God it was a right bending line to the next fence and I could take the reins again and get it back together. But I still didn’t have the stirrup. It’s something I’ve trained on a lot with my father, he’s always said you need to be able to get your foot back in the stirrup without looking down – but I didn’t find the stirrup, and I was looking down – and I thought I hope he doesn’t see this right now.

“After the first round we had a discussion about changing his bit as he was so keen, but my dad told me that we shouldn’t do this and that I should just ride better!

“I was also lucky in the last as I had rub at the vertical where there were a lot of faults. But the rest he jumped beautiful, and in the second round and jump-off, I’m just so happy to have a horse like Leone Jei.”

Groom David Honnet shares his travelling tips and reveals Scott Brash’s next superstar

Showjumping super groom David Honnet, 35, has been working for British Olympic showjumper Scott Brash for seven years. He joined the Scotsman from Irish showjumper Cameron Hanley. Scott Brash’s groom, David, travels all over the world looking after Scott’s horses and most recently was at CHIO Aachen, Germany, where Scott and Hello Jefferson helped Great Britain to a second-place finish in the Nations Cup.

Speaking from Aachen, David explained the journey involved with three horses from Scott’s yard in Sussex.

“I travelled with the horses on Sunday morning, we left the yard and took the ferry – in total it was a 10-hour trip,” says David. “The trip went well, but since Brexit, everything takes a bit longer with the paperwork and checks. I got here to Aachen pretty late, and the show vets were really helpful.

“All the horses travelled well, they are all really used to it. Hello Jefferson has been everywhere in the world, so it was no problem for him. Hello Mango is also a very good traveller; she was in Spain for the beginning of the year, so she has done a few long trips. Hello Valentino is also a very good traveller.”

David’s advice if you find yourself with a horse who doesn’t travel well, is to “break it down, don’t do long days”.

“Only do small journeys, never more than 600 kilometres at a time if the horse is bad at travelling,” he explains. “If possible, I would travel through the night – it is always quicker and smoother. You usually do not experience as much traffic or get stuck on the roads, so if it suits your plan and the person driving is able to drive through the night, I would definitely recommend that.”

Scott’s top horse Hello Jefferson is in “really good shape” according to David, while nine-year-old Hello Valentino is still gaining experience and baby of the pack, eight-year-old Hello Mango, is “going to be a superstar for sure!”

“She had a very good beginning to the year in Spain, then we gave her a bit of a break to try to get an embryo from her, but it didn’t work, so she is back and feeling fresh and jumping well,” says David. “At only eight-years-old, she’s one for the future.”

Scott Brash’s groom David Honnet: “Safety first is key”

Facilities for grooms are improving all the time and Aachen, says David, is one of the best.

“My main concern when I get to shows is always safety first, and here everything is very safe and comfortable for the horses,” he says. “I have been to Aachen a number of times and there are always little improvements and the attention to detail for the horses is incredible. This morning I noticed a new wash bay and it’s things like this that make the show great.

“I have to say it’s the Sunday afternoon in Calgary and Aachen that have the most amazing feeling,” he says of some of the best shows in the world. “Then when you go clear, it is incredible – it is only an afternoon, but it feels like a week, there is so much emotion. It is really very special! Both Spruce Meadows and Aachen have two rounds and a jump-off, so those two grands prix feel really unique, there is so much emotion.

“Geneva and ‘s-Hertogenbosch are also incredible grands prix. CHI Geneva is the last big event of the year, so you want to finish on a high. The Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final adds to the prestige of the show.

“The grooms are a small and close community. Obviously, you cannot like everyone, and you need a strong character to do this job as there are a lot of big characters, but once you’ve got your friends, everybody helps each other. Once you find people you trust, you can ask them if you are struggling or if you need advice, like ‘how should I do that’ or, ‘what should I do if I have this problem’. I have been doing this job for years, but I remember at the beginning of the year I went to ask for advice from another groom because I had a difficult horse I needed help with, and that is what is so great about this community.”

David on being Scott’s groom: “We are both calm people”

Scott is well known for being the only rider to have won the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping and, although David wasn’t working for Scott at that time, he was watching on the sofa “hoping for him to win it”.

“At the time I had no idea I was going to work for him one day,” says David. “In 2016, when he once again won the CP International, presented by Rolex, in Calgary, we were watching at home with his mother and we went crazy when he won. Scott and I are both calm people and there is rarely any tension. We have some very sharp horses, and so the cooler you stay the better it is for the horses, they don’t need you to put any stress on them.”

Of the team behind Scott’s success, David says they all trust each other and that’s what makes them so strong.

“Within the team, you need so much quality and skill – I have some, Scott has some, and then the people at home do as well,” he reveals. “Our team trusts each other and this probably is what makes the difference.”

Another secret to their success? Treats!

“It’s something that is common to all the groom and horses – we all give them treats when they come out of the ring, so that is something that I always have in the bag,” he says. “There is no lucky charm, they just need a treat when they come out.”

‘A privilege to ride on your wings’: top mare retires from competition aged 17

HH Azur, the phenomenal ride of US showjumper McLain Ward, has retired from competition aged 17.

The announcement came yesterday (2 July) after McLain pulled HH Azur up during the first round of the Rolex grand prix, when the pair knocked down the second and third fences. Going into Aachen, McLain was the live contender for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, having scored back-to-back grand prix wins at CHI Geneva and then the Dutch Masters, with “Annie”.

“Dear Annie, I knew this day would come but somehow you always were able to reach deep inside and achieve greatness time and time again,” said McLain.

“We all know there comes a time when your mind and body disagree but it is still hard to let go. You have given all of us so much but it’s time to say goodbye to our sport and retire in good health.”

Annie was bred in Belgium by Nathalie Beaufort, and was competed in young horse classes by Nathalie’s husband Pedro Nolasco. When she was bought by Francois Mathy in 2014, Annie’s international career began with Francois’ rider Perez Bilbao, before she was flown to America in early 2015 to begin her career with McLain, under the co-ownership of Double H Farm.

McLain and Annie’s first international victory together was a CSI5* 1.50m at Spruce Meadows in June 2015. The pair’s first team event was the Rome leg of the Nations Cup the following year, where they won the grand prix and helped Team USA to second place in the team competition. They made their Olympic debut together at Rio that summer, where they won team silver and were ninth individually.

In 2017 Annie and McLain became World Cup champions. Annie was named US Equestrian’s international horse of the year, and McLain won equestrian of the year, after the pair had not a single fault in team competition in 2017. The following year they were fourth in the World Cup final, and had continued to rack up five-star wins and placings around the world since.

“I knew from our beginning you were better than me and that it would take every bit of my ability to not let you down. Your wings carried all of us whose lives you have touched on an incredible journey that is the epitome of why we seek such lofty goals and pursue them with such passion,” said McLain.

“You are the very definition of a queen. It was a privilege to have been the one to ride on your wings, to be your partner and to be part of your life.”

McLain added a “special thank you” to those who had been involved in Annie’s career; Lee, Erica, Virginie, Kirstie, the Mathy family, the Harrison family, and all the “incredible team”.

“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in Annie’s and my journey. Without each and every one of you the story we’ve written would not have been possible,” he said.

“I’m forever grateful for your contributions and I have no doubt Annie has touched your life in a positive way as she has everyone’s. Happy retirement, my Queen.”

‘We let the horses be themselves’: top tips and insight from an international groom

Denise Moriarty has been head groom for top US showjumper Kent Farrington for 11 years and she has developed a wealth of knowledge in her role. She takes us behind-the-scenes to reveal some insights into her globetrotting career as a showjumping groom, as well as sharing plenty of top tips.

“We know each other so well,” Denise says of her working relationship with the world number 11. “Kent is very good at involving us all in every step of the horse’s journey – he wants us to understand why he is doing something. For example, if he is trying a new bridle or bit, he shares his feeling as a rider with us so that we can better understand. There is a lot of communication and trust.”

Speaking about the huge amount of travelling she does with the horses between America and Europe, she says: “We like to make sure that they are extremely fit so that they can handle the travelling and recover quickly after the journey. For example, before CHI Geneva, we would fly and land in Europe on the Monday before the show. They would then trot-up on Tuesday, with their first class taking place on Thursday. The biggest thing during their transportation is to make sure that they stay calm, and that they are eating and drinking properly. We try to make the experience enjoyable for them.

“I fly with the horses and honestly, it is much nicer to fly with them than on a normal commercial flight,” she reveals. “You do not have to queue or wait for the stewards to come around with food and drinks – you can just help yourself. With the permission of the pilot, we can walk around and go and check on our horses, which is really nice. Each of the planes that we fly on is different, for example Qatar Airways has a huge upstairs area for us, but some of the domestic flights are a lot smaller and we sit on the jump seats – but these flights are only a couple of hours, so it is okay.”

“It helps them understand there is nothing to worry about”

If Denise has a horse that does not like to travel or is new to it, she will try pair them to travel with a more experienced and laid-back horse.

“[The inexperienced horse] can learn and feed off the more experienced horse’s energy,” she explains. “If an anxious horse sees the other horse not reacting, it calms them down and helps them to understand that there is nothing to worry about.

“I also like to make sure that everything is laid out for them properly – so the ramp is safe, and the partition is open – I try to make sure that everything is totally clear to them. It is important that their first travelling experiences are positive; sometimes we will use earplugs to take away the sharpness and help it be an enjoyable experience. I have found that if they have a good experience the first couple of times, then they will be good travellers in the future.”

Denise says a lot of the horses she looks after in Kent Farrington’s barn are “big characters”.

“But we like this, and we let them be themselves – they are all very different,” she says. “Creedance is just happy about everything, and is excited about every day, even though most of his days are the same. He loves getting his halter on and going out for a ride or a jump.

“Landon is very much the same way. He is excited to do his work, but he can be a bit cheeky and become quite stallion-like at the shows, even though he is not one! For the most part, they are great horses – of course, they have their little quirks just like people do, but they are sweet horses.”

“What these horses do for us is unreal”

Talking about the showjumping Majors – The Dutch Masters, the forthcoming CHIO Aachen (23 June-2 July), Spruce Meadows Masters and CHI Geneva – Denise says it is the “prestige and respect” that sets these events apart.

“You get all of the best horses and riders competing there and the facilities for everyone including the grooms are incredible,” she reveals. “They are the best of the best.

“The shows are held in venues where everyone who attends understands horses and has a connection with them. The crowds’ involvement and all of the hype and energy that they create add to the unique atmospheres. You just don’t see that at other shows.

“I have always loved CHI Geneva – it is one of the pinnacles of our year,” says Denise. “The atmosphere at CHIO Aachen is just unbelievable and the size of the fences at Spruce Meadows makes it such an incredible competition. Then, the Dutch Masters is filled with such knowledgeable horse people and the staff there are amazing. Each of the four shows have something so unique and special about them.”

Among a glittering list of career achievements, Kent Farrington won a double of Rolex grands prix with the brilliant recently retired mare Gazelle, now 17, at Aachen in 2019, two years after landing the equivalent at CHI Geneva.

“Gazelle was amazing, she just kept on fighting and wanting to win,” she recalls. “To watch your rider and the horse that you look after everyday win – it is something words can’t describe.

“With Gazelle, we try to keep everything the same,” she adds. “She will let Kent know once he gets on whether she is in a winning mood – he will be able to feel it. As long as everything works out, then it is normally a good day.

“We have had Gazelle since she was seven-years-old and so we have built her up into the horse that she is today, seen her grow, and watched her highs and lows,” Denise explains. “To look back at her win at CHIO Aachen, and to remember watching her jumping three of the biggest and testing rounds in the sport, and to still see her fight to clear the last fence and gallop to the finish line, wanting to win as much as Kent did, was amazing.

“It was an incredible feeling – what these horses do for us is just unreal. That win meant a lot. Of course, watching Kent and Voyeur win the team silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio was another incredible moment.”

Showjumping groom’s top tip: ‘Watch and learn’

Denise describes the favourite part of her role as a showjumping groom as “just being with the horses”, but she considers herself very lucky to get to work outside all day.

“We are always moving, which is great because we are active and healthy,” she says, adding that the best part of the job is “getting to go to some of the nicest places in the world”.

“There is always a chance just to take a deep breath and appreciate what you do,” Denise says. “For me, the travelling is the hardest part – there can be a lot of long days and it can be quite tiring, but it is just part of the job.”

She says grooms coming into the profession need to “watch and learn”.

“You must also have a passion for horses and love what you do,” she says. “Even now, I still watch other grooms and how they do different things or how they deal with a difficult horse – you always keep learning in this job.

After winning back-to-back Rolex grands prix at CHI Geneva and then at The Dutch Masters with his “Queen”, the brilliant mare HH Azur, US rider McLain Ward is the current live contender for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping.

Their Grand Slam journey will continue at CHIO Aachen next month, but how did all begin for this much-loved 17-year-old mare? Adriana Van Tilburg met HH Azur’s Belgian breeder Nathalie Beaufort to find out.

Nathalie Beaufort started to dream 18 years ago about breeding a foal. However, it did not go entirely without a hitch.

“My husband Pedro was competing HH Azur’s dam, Sion VD Zuuthoeve,” she says. “I asked Pedro if he could ask Sion VD Zuuthoeve’s owner if I could flush an embryo from the mare. Sion VD Zuuthoeve was actually meant to become a dressage horse, but Pedro was very successful with her in show jumping. It was agreed, so we took the mare to the vet to have her inseminated.

“I had already looked at possible suitable stallions and Pedro thought Argentinus would be a good choice,” she continues. “We tried three times and it just didn’t work. The vet said a son of Argentinus, Thunder Van De Zuuthoeve, was available. He was a young stallion and nobody knew of him, but when I saw him in the stable I instantly fell in love – he was fantastic to look at. He cost half the stud fee of Argentinus and we had fresh semen.

“She [Sion VD Zuuthoeve] became pregnant in one attempt and the embryo transfer went very well. The following year HH Azur was born, her birth name is Azur Garden’s Horses. She was a beautiful filly with long legs, and it was such a special feeling for me when she was born. She stayed with us as a yearling and two-year-old – I don’t like my young horses being reared in a big group of young horses as I am afraid of accidents. I have bred other foals and sometimes when they are weaned from their mothers, I let an older horse raise them. I have not bred another foal like HH Azur. When you breed a foal like HH Azur it is difficult to have a real eye to judge the other foals as she was just so special.”

‘It is very important for horses to be able to breathe in the field’

The next important chapter for HH Azur began when she turned three-years-old. She was broken-in and step-by-step she was prepared for a career in the sport. Nathalie recalls: “At three-years-old, we started her under saddle. It was incredible, every time you did an exercise that she hadn’t done before she made you feel like she knew that exercise. It was so easy for her to understand what we wanted from her.

“After a couple of months, I told Pedro we were going to stop her training and let her go back into the pasture, and when she was four-years-old we would pick it up again a bit. We took her to a competition maybe three times as a four-year-old, just as a learning experience. Then she went back in the pasture until she was five.

“As a five-year-old, we did the same again, and then as a six-year-old, she did a few international young horse competitions – not to win or place, but again for her experience,” explains Nathalie. “The most important thing for us was that she understood what we were asking of her and that she enjoyed it. We then built up to three-day shows. Even as a six-year-old, she was allowed to go out to pasture again after the season – it is very important for horses to be able to breathe and come into themselves in the field. HH Azur was fine with it all.

“As a seven-year-old, when we began again people started to recognise her and wondered why she was so good. We didn’t really want to show her to the outside world when she was five and six-years-old, we wanted to show her quality when she was seven. By then we were already getting offers from people who wanted to buy her. Pedro turned everything down because he thought she would be an Olympic mare – he had all this belief in her since she was three, but he realised he was not a good enough rider for her. He was a good rider for two-star level and we also didn’t have a sponsor or much money to ride at top level. Just riding well doesn’t get you there, everything around it has to be good too.”

HH Azur: ‘My heart is in my throat’

The success of HH Azur did not go unnoticed and the interest in her began to grow.

“At the end of her seventh year, François Mathy Sr came by and was very fond of her,” Nathalie recalls. “He thought we were asking a lot of money for her, but one day he came by with McLain Ward, who was very surprised by HH Azur’s quality. Pénélope Leprévost had also been to try HH Azur, no one really knows this, but François Mathy Sr also worked with Pénélope at the time. Initially, HH Azur was ridden in the international classes by François’s rider, Spaniard Diego Perez Bilbao. A few months after that, HH Azur left for America with McLain Ward. There, HH Azur’s next chapter began.”

It brings a lot of emotions for a breeder to see the horse that they bred and raised compete at the highest level. How does it feel for Nathalie Beaufort to see HH Azur compete at the highest level?

“I experience HH Azur’s success with two emotions,” she reveals. “The first is a great pride and an intense admiration for her when I see her jumping with McLain. But at the same time my heart is in my throat because she is no longer close to me. These two emotions often mix and bring tears to my eyes.

“Azur left at the dawn of her eighth birthday. We looked after her for over seven years and selling her was emotionally very hard. It creates a lot of emotional bonds when horses stay with their breeder for so long. I knew she had a great career ahead of her and that the financial means to get to that level are not insignificant. When she left for HH Farm with McLain Ward as her rider, I felt comforted. She was going to be fine in this new structure and today I can only continue to admire this magnificent mare. She remains one of the most beautiful stories of my life with my horses.”

As well as their magnificent recent success in the Rolex Grand Slam, McLain Ward and HH Azur have won grands prix all over the world, triumphed in the World Cup Final, represented USA in Nations Cups and won team silver at the 2016 Olympics.

With her brilliant success and fighting spirit, it is no wonder this wonderful mare has become one of the most popular horses of all time, thanks hugely to her wonderful upbringing.

British grand prix victor needs a scoreboard double-take, grand slam contender stunned and a six-bar flyer

Every once in a while a jump-off leaves you speechless and Sunday’s Rolex grand prix at The Dutch Masters was truly exceptional. The prospect of having another rider continuing their journey for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping is brilliant news for the sport.

Elsewhere, we watched Irish riders clear 1.85m in a Spanish six-bar and win a Dubai grand prix, while Great Britain’s James Smith continued his simply astounding run with grand prix victory on the Sunshine Tour. Here is your weekly round-up of international showjumping news and results.

Fifty shades of scopey

Irish showjumper Ciaran Nallon rode the nine-year-old Fifty Shades Of Grey (pictured, main image) over a 1.85m final fence to win the six-bar on the Andalucia Sunshine Tour. Thirteen combinations lined up but the Irish duo were the only faultless performers after the fourth round. At the show, British rider Matt Sampson also won a ranking class riding the 14-year-old mare Ebolensky.

Breen’s grand prix success

Trevor Breen and the super mare Germaine W sealed a brilliant run in the UAE with victory in the final CSI2* grand prix at the Emirates Equestrian Centre in Dubai. Drawn fourth in the nine-way jump-off, the pair swooped home fastest of the four double clears.

“Germaine has been in super form the whole trip so I’m delighted,” Trevor told H&H. “She did two Nations Cups really well, we finished second in one, third in the other, we capped off the five-star competitions with a third in the grand prix, then she won the two-star grand prix here. I can’t ask for more than that.

“The time allowed was quite tight in round one and there were a few riders clear with time faults, my brother Shane Breen [Can Ya Makan] was one of them, so it was a tough first round. I watched a couple go in the jump-off, but I had my plan and there were a couple of fast guys after me which made me go for it. So I did a couple of leave-out strides from fence one to two and to the last fence, so I think I really nicked it there.”

Trevor describes Mandy Hall’s mare, a five-star winner in Dublin last year, as “a great horse for me”.

“She loved Dubai,” said Trevor, who plans to target Royal Windsor next with Germaine W. “She likes the sun and she just seemed to get better and better out there.”

British grand prix riders are separated by just one hundredth of a second

The CSI4* grand prix on week five of the Andalucia Sunshine Tour resulted in a British one-two, with James Smith (Arkuga) and Karl Robins (Equine America G Camille HBF) separated by just 0.01sec. James admitted he had to look twice at the score board after his round, not least because he thought he’d knocked the first fence down in the nine-way jump-off.

“It was close! Arkuga jumped a bit to the side over the first fence and I half had it in my head that he’d knocked it down, but when I came back round everyone was shouting for me,” James told H&H. “Luckily it worked out – I had to look twice at the clock though because I still wasn’t sure!

“I’m delighted to get a big win, he’s been so consistent,” James added of the Renwicks’ 12-year-old home-bred – by Arko III out of Laura’s multi-winning mare Beluga – who was named “Messi” by their football-loving son, Jack.

“Big thanks to the Renwicks for letting me ride him, he’s naturally fast which makes everything so much easier. That’s probably the biggest grand prix track we’ve jumped so far and he just takes it in his stride. He has a great attitude – he wants to do it.”

Arkuga is looked after by Nikki Park and delighted owner Laura said: “We are so incredibly proud to have bred this superstar who has formed such a brilliant partnership with James over the last few months. Over the moon is an understatement!”

Ward keeps his Grand Slam dream alive

All roads now lead to Aachen this summer for US showjumper McLain Ward and the outstanding mare HH Azur. They won a second consecutive leg of the Rolex Grand Slam at The Dutch Masters in the Netherlands after one of the sport’s most spectacular jump-offs.

“I am so proud of my team and my horse – and a little proud of myself,” said McLain, who is the first rider since Scott Brash in 2015 to claim two consecutive Majors in the now four-event series. “The Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping has truly raised the bar of the sport and winning a Major is one of the greatest moments in a rider’s career.”

From a stellar line-up that included eight of the top 10 riders in the world, a mammoth field of 16 jumped clear in round one of Sunday’s Rolex grand prix. The track set by Louis Konickx had championship dimensions but even in round two, these world-class combinations made light work of the challenge.

The jump-off ignited straight away with the opening riders coming out all guns blazing. Drawn fourth, McLain eclipsed the leading time set by Julien Epaillard of France riding Donatello D’Auge, rocketing home in 37.86sec. He had a few anxious moments as Simon Delestre (Cayman Jolly Jumper) scorched round in typical style and the Frenchman was up on the clock, only to hit the final Rolex oxer, dropping them to 10th behind the nine double clears. Less than a second split the top five riders, with Julien taking second and world number one Henrik von Eckermann finishing third on the incomparable King Edward.

McLain had travelled from the US, where he has been competing at Florida’s Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), for the event and was stunned by the turn of events, which keeps his Rolex Grand Slam dream alive in this, its 10th year.

“I don’t think it has quite sunk in yet – it was a lot of stress having to watch the remaining 12 riders in the jump-off,” said McLain, who picked up a hefty €330,000 (just shy of £292,000) first prize. “The level here is so high and I think later tonight I will realise what we have achieved.”

McLain’s previous success came in the Rolex grand prix of Geneva in December, again with “Annie”.

“She is smarter than everybody else and is truly a queen,” he said. “I think she understands what is happening and really rises to the moment. She loves her job and the partnership that we have created is truly so special.

“She is 17 now, so she does not compete as often any more – instead we just aim her at the most important competitions. She has an incredible physical ability, but what makes her truly stand out is her character. She is a warrior at heart. I use the term ‘Queen’ when referring to her, as she encapsulates every aspect of that term. Two years ago, I thought that it was the end of her career as she had several injuries, but she overcame them. At the beginning of the 2022 season, she was feeling better than ever, and we made the decision to keep competing her and then assess her later on in the season. She ended up having the best year of her career so far.

“As long as she is still in love with the sport and happy, we will continue competing. I love spending time with her, whether that is hacking, training or competing – she is such a brilliant horse.”

Young British superstars Harry Charles (Balou Du Reventon) and Joe Stockdale (Equine America Cacharel) both reached the jump-off for the Rolex grand prix, finishing with eight and 12 faults respectively, and both enjoyed a string of excellent placings throughout this five-star show.

‘We live to have moments like this’

Daniel Bluman of Israel rode Ladriano Z to victory in the $425,000 Wellington Equestrian Realty CSI5* grand prix during week nine of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Florida, four years after winning the same event in 2019. Shane Sweetnam took second on James Kann Cruz, with Karl Cook third on the 13-year-old mare Kalinka Van’t Zorgvliet.

“I watched Shane’s round and his horse and mine are both big and scopey, so I tried to do the same as him and edge him in a couple places,” said Daniel.

“At this time of the year, you have some of the greatest riders in the world here for the season so it’s very intense. We live to have moments like this where you’re competing against people you really admire and horses you really like. It was just the right group in the jump-off and I was really motivated to win it and when I crossed the timers I had a feeling I had.”

‘I truly thought I had no chance’: milestone 5* win for Lebanese rider

Lebanese rider Jad Dana and 13-year-old After Eight enjoyed a milestone first five-star win in WEF’s 1.50m classic, beating speedy Irish showjumper Darragh Kenny, who finished second and third with Vancouver Dreams and Chic Chic respectively.

“Even though my mare is very fast, the riders today had so much experience and they are incredibly talented,” said Jad, who trains with US Olympic team gold medallist Leslie Howard. “I truly thought I had no chance. I was happy just to be in the jump-off. This mare tried her heart out for me today.

“She does everything because of her huge heart. I love her so much. I have no words. To win a five-star is absolutely a dream come true.”

Irish success continued at WEF when Bertram Allen and Aiden McGrory’s Pacino Amiro triumphed in Thursday’s CSI5* Challenge Cup. He was up against countryman Darragh Kenny on Vlock Show Stables’ Chic Chic and US rider Schuyler Riley (Robin De Ponthual) in a three-way jump-off and, from second draw, posted the winning time of 36.94sec.

“I’ve never seen a WEF Challenge here where only three were clear in the first round, so it was a much more tactical jump-off than normal,” said Bertram. “It was a huge advantage going after Darragh because I saw one or two places in his jump-off where I could get the better of him if I left the rails up.”

‘We thought she was in the sunset of her career; she’s been reborn’: 16yo mare helps top rider become new Grand Slam contender

USA rider McLain Ward and the 16-year-old mare HH Azur triumphed in the Rolex grand prix at the CHI Geneva horse show on Sunday (11 December) to become the contenders for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping.

Shedding a few tears in the aftermath of his incredible first victory in a Major grand prix, McLain said: “This has been 30 years coming. It’s been a long and difficult story, but I think that’s what the sport does for us, it’s the struggle reflected in life, the fight, the perseverance, the trying to do better, and that’s something I’m very proud of. My career has been not all ups – although I’m fortunate to have had plenty – but there have been some very difficult ones, some here in Geneva [where McLain was disqualified from the 2010 World Cup Final], but this has always been a very special place for me and somewhere I’ve wanted to have excellence.

“This is the mecca of our sport so I’m proud to be here, proud to win.”

From last draw, McLain just pipped home rider Martin Fuchs (Leone Jei) into second and Ireland’s Shane Sweetnam (James Kann Cruz) into third in a thrilling 13-way jump-off in front of a passionate and vocal crowd.

A coveted rug for the new Rolex Grand Slam contenders

The US combination have been in tremendous form this year and came to Geneva on the back of a podium finish in the Super Grand Prix at Prague a fortnight earlier. HH Azur, who is owned by Double H Farms, left Geneva adorned in the coveted green and gold Rolex rug which signals the start of McLain’s next adventure as Rolex Grand Slam contender.

The double Olympic team gold medallist revealed the pep talks he always gives his incredible partner of the past seven years.

“At this point in her career I always give her a pat on the neck and say ‘You don’t owe anyone a fence, but if we could jump another clear round today it would be nice,’ he said. “I really have that feeling for this wonderful mare.

“When I got on her for the jump-off, I actually said to her, ‘It’s only one more round – give me what you’ve got and if you don’t have enough it’s OK too. She jumped out of her boots, which was pretty remarkable.

“This story is particularly very special – Azur is owned part by Hunter Harrison and his family, who was a great mentor and supporter of mine, but is no longer with us, and Francois Mathy, who is like a father to me and was here today so that’s very special.

“At the end of last year I thought her career was probably coming to an end, she didn’t feel in great form and it felt like she was in the sunset of her career. But she has been reborn this year. She feels incredibly healthy and has jumped seven major grands prix, three of which were Grand Slam events, and she was clear in all seven – other than a time-fault, which was the rider’s fault! So yes, I was emotional, I wanted to win, to beat these guys is a great feat, to not let the horse down – it’s a great day.

“For all of us in the sport, we aspire to win these very special events – Geneva, Aachen, Calgary, Rome. These are the events I grew up dreaming of, jumping in my back yard pretending to win. I first came to this show nearly 30 years ago – I still think I’m one of the younger ones, but I’m not! This is our life, this is what we live, this is the dream.”

‘I took all the risks to win the hat-trick – but McLain had other ideas!’

There was a standing ovation for Martin Fuchs, who had bid an emotional farewell to his other great grey Clooney 51 earlier in the afternoon. His dazzling jump-off performance on Leone Jei would be beaten, just denying him a record third win in this class, but the Swiss rider was thrilled nevertheless.

“It was a pretty emotional day with the goodbye of Clooney,” said Martin. “Leone Jei always jumps great in this ring and I knew that the course suited me well. In the jump-off I tried to take all the risks I could to make the hat-trick, but McLain had a different idea for today!”

Drawn earlier than the top two, Shane Sweetnam had done all he could with the nine-year-old Irish-bred James Kann Cruz (Kannan x Cruising) in only his first season at five-star level, and punched the air in delight after taking the lead.

“I got him last year as an eight-year-old,” said Shane. “We’ve had a great partnership from the start. The standard in this class is incredible, but I feel with this horse I can really compete with these guys. In the jump-off I went as fast as I could and I was winning coming out of the ring which is all you can really ask. Then the guys Martin and McLain took another step and took the class, it was great sport.”

Best of the Brits in the Rolex grand prix was jump-off trailblazer and reigning Olympic champion Ben Maher riding the nine-year-old mare Dallas Vegas Batilly, in the same ownership as Explosion W – Charlotte Rossetter and Pamela Wright. They set off with the mare’s lovely big, swinging stride really covering the ground, but they stalled slightly on the turn back to an oxer at fence three and hit the back rail to post a score of four faults in 42.76sec.

In the first round we lost British hopes Joe Stockdale (Equine America Cacharel) who was competing in his first ever Rolex Grand Slam and Harry Charles (Romeo 88), both with faults at the tricky double of Liverpools.

Irish contenders Conor Swail and Count Me In hit the third part of the Rolex treble for a four-fault tally, while his countryman Denis Lynch and Brooklyn Heights also finished on the same score.

Previous Rolex Grand Slam contender Daniel Deusser finished sixth with a great double clear on Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z.

Now for something completely different… a class featuring a quadruple combination

The talking point of Saturday’s schedule at the CHI Geneva (7-11 December) was the five-star Coupe de Geneve “competition over combinations” in which a quality field of 35 riders tackled a unique track consisting only of combination fences.

The six-fence course opened with a triple bar, but athletes then immediately faced an oxer-vertical double quickly followed by a vertical-oxer double at fence three. They then looped round to face a huge test, the Rolex quadruple combination, which comprised of a vertical to vertical on two strides, then one stride to an oxer and two strides to part 4b, another oxer; it was an incredible test of power jumping.

But there was no let up, as the home straight consisted of another pair of doubles on a dog leg.

Amazingly, 12 riders jumped clear to progress to the scaled back – although no less testing – jump-off against the clock.

The winner was home rider Steve Guerdat riding Venard De Cerisy, who powered round at incredible speed to claim the £32,000 top prize and led a Swiss one-two-three on the podium.

“Venard has always jumped combinations really well and he was really on form today,” said Steve. “I thoroughly enjoyed the jump-off, which was perfectly put together. It’s definitely an event that suits me and I always enjoy taking part in it because it’s also a bit of a change from what we usually do.”

Joe Stockdale: ‘It’s just a mass of poles’

But in fifth place with a tremendous double clear on his debut appearance at this five-star CHI Geneva show was a thrilled Joe Stockdale riding the 11-year-old Bingo Du Chateau.

“I’ve never done anything like that before,” said Joe. “And there were some big fences in there, it was tough. I wasn’t quite sure how Bingo was going to react going into such a big combination – when they come into a quadruple combination it’s just a mass of poles in front of them.

“But he just went in there and even from number one he was on it. He jumped it well.”

Joe admitted that he hadn’t been able to practise for this unique class.

“I’d planned to practise, but then I changed my plans and I’ve actually only jumped a couple of small rounds at home on him before coming here. So it was nice he came in and took on the challenge,” said the 23-year-old, who was crowned Tommy Hilfiger Equestrian Young Rider of the Year at the recent Horse & Hound Awards.

“The calibre of horses and riders here is unreal, it’s the best in the world, certainly the best I’ve ever been to,” added Joe. “So I’m chuffed to bits. Bingo Du Chateau has had a big year, he’s done a lot of learning. He hadn’t done a lot before the start of this year, but he’s stepped up and that’s a nice note to finish on, with a good course and a nice result under his belt.”

Joe will be contesting his first ever Rolex Grand Slam leg on Sunday, the Rolex grand prix of Geneva, with his championship mare Equine America Cacharel.

“She feels great here and seems to like the arena,” said Joe. “She’s not gone in tense or a bit spooky like they can do in this ring. I know it’s going to be tough, but fingers crossed… The crowd here is just fantastic, lots of noise and a great atmosphere, it’s such a great show.”

‘I wanted a bit of balance’: meet the young rider combining five-star shows with a job in property

Competing in the prestigious Land Rover-sponsored under-25 classes at the five-star CHI Geneva this week is one of the sport’s rising stars, 18-year-old British showjumper Red Morgan.

The Cheshire rider has represented his country on numerous teams as he’s progressed through the levels, most recently at this year’s junior European championships with his top horse Golia. But this level-headed teenager, who left school in July, has recently started work in the property business, managing to combine his job with top flight showjumping.

“I wanted to have a bit of balance between the horses and a different profession,” says Red when we caught up with him at the CHI Geneva.

“I left school in July – I had a place at university but I didn’t really want to go, so I decided to go into property as my dad’s in property, too – and I started work about six weeks ago.

“So I work Monday to Wednesday and I just have the two horses at home at the moment, so it’s manageable. But they can be lunged or have a day off while I work, and Joe my groom hacks them. Then I can fly to different shows or I can just ride at home from Thursday to Sunday.

“So at the moment I’m not sure if becoming a professional showjumper is the route I’ll take, but it’s good to have something separate, it’s the best of both worlds, it’s brilliant,” he says.

Red rode the 11-year-old Bustique gelding Golia to four faults in Saturday’s (10 December) prestigious Land Rover grand prix for the under 25-year-olds, won by French rider Alexis Goulet on Calla after a 13-way jump-off.

“It was a good round, but just not quite clear – but it’s my first time here and it’s amazing,” says Red, who will now travel back to the UK to contest the Voltaire Design under-25 British Championship at the London International Horse Show on Thursday (15 December).

“It’s great that they put on these under-25 classes at these five-star shows. It’s nice to be able to experience what these top guys experience. It’s a pleasure to be here.”

Red Morgan also proved that perseverance pays off when it comes to competing at five-star shows such as the world famous CHI Geneva, which hosts the Rolex Grand Slam on Sunday and the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final, which was won this year by Henrik von Eckermann and the all-conquering King Edward.

“I actually just emailled the organiser, then a friend helped me as well, but I kept emailing and asking if they could let me in [for the under-25 classes] and I got in eventually!” he says.

His plans for the future?

“I’d like to jump the young rider Europeans for the next couple of years and just see how we get on,” says the hard-working teenager.

‘Ride for second place, not first, and you will eventually win more’: rider reveals advice that has shaped his career

Belgian showjumper Gilles Thomas grabbed our attention when winning the Longines King George V Gold Cup at the 2022 Royal International riding Aretino 13, a landmark first five-star success for the 24-year-old.

He has since gone on to finish third in the CP International presented by Rolex at the CSIO Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament, he won a five-star class at the London leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour and was part of the Belgium team that won the Nation Cup Final in Barcelona last month.

Gilles attributes much of his success to some advice he was given earlier in his career.

“I am a very competitive person, so the best piece of advice I was given was that it is better to ride for second place and not for first place, and you will eventually win more,” says Gilles.

“I really think this is true because you ride a bit slower, and it allows the time to build up your confidence and ability.”

Gilles is based at Stal Niewenhof near Mechelen in Belgium and has a string of 12 horses, four of whom are jumping at five-star level.

“I am very lucky at the moment because I have a stable filled with very high-quality horses and that has enabled me to have such a successful season,” says Gilles, who is most excited about one horse in his stable. “I have an eight-year-old stallion called Ermitage Kalone, by Catoki. He has been breeding a lot this year and is very popular in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. He is a very good jumping horse and is well bred himself, which is why I think he has been so popular.

“Next year he will turn nine years old and so we will start to jump him more – he is currently jumping at 1.45m and in two-star grands prix and finding it very easy. My plan is that next year he will be my second horse for the five-star shows, and I will hopefully take him to a three-star Nations Cup – we will build him up slowly throughout the year. I think that he will really start to be a top horse in 2024.”

Gilles Thomas: a day in the life

A typical day at home involves Gilles riding eight or nine horses.

“At the moment, my uncle [Marc van Dijck] manages my stables which enables me to focus solely on riding the horses, which is great for me,” says Gilles. “I try to ride all the horses in the morning. We have a lot of young horses as part of our breeding programme, and so in the afternoon I spend my time with the foals and free jumping the younger horses. It is very exciting to see the next generation of horses that we have at the stables.

“I do not have a lot of free time because most shows are on the weekends, but when I am free, I like to meet up with my friends and go for a drink or to a restaurant. I don’t see them that often – so I really appreciate the time I spend with them. I am also very sporty, so play squash once a week with a friend.”

Gilles’s uncle has inspired the up-and-coming young showjumper throughout his career.

“He is also my trainer and has competed at the top level of the sport as well as representing the Belgium team,” says Gilles. “Around 10 or 15 years ago he was competing at CSIO Spruce Meadows and CHIO Aachen, and he was actually third in Aachen. He gives me the best advice, but I am also super motivated to make sure that I beat his results!

“I love the feeling of winning and achieving top results, and this year has really given me that experience. It has been an amazing year, where I have been able to go to some of the best shows in the world, where the organisation is amazing and I am competing against my idols. Of course, there are a lot of shows in the calendar, and you have to go to most of them to keep your rankings points up, but I am very lucky that I have enough top horses to swap them out across the season to keep them fresh.”

Competing with some of the world’s best riders

Gilles received his first team call-up for the Nations Cup in Falsterbo this summer, which Belgium won.

“I was then also selected for the Nations Cup Final in Barcelona where I was on a team with Jérôme Guery, Gregory Wathelet and Olivier Philippaerts, where we also won and gained Olympic qualification,” explains Gilles. “Everything this year has happened so quickly, but it has been so incredible to be part of such a successful team. It has been amazing to compete on the same team as them as they are fantastic riders and have had such successful careers.

“At the beginning of the year, I was third in a big class in Miami, and both Jérôme and Gregory messaged me to say they hoped that we would compete on the same team this year, but I never thought it would happen.”

Looking ahead, Gilles is hoping to compete at CHI Geneva in early December with Aretino 13, as well as the five-star show at Mechelen between Christmas and New Year.

“This show is always very important to Belgian riders and my family are involved in the organisation of it, so I really hope I can have a good result in the World Cup there,” he says. “My ultimate dream is to compete at CHIO Aachen – in my opinion it is the best show in the world and the Rolex Grand Prix there is one of the most prestigious classes in the calendar. I am also aiming to compete in a Belgium senior team at a big championship. I have competed in junior and young rider teams, but to be part of the Belgium team at the World Championships or the Olympic Games and win a medal would be a dream come true.”

Gilles also enthuses about the four Majors as part of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping.

“[Those shows] are so good at ensuring everything is perfect for the horses – of course the prize money is incredible as well,” he says. “There are so many five-star shows but the Majors really stand out as something to aim and prepare for, they are the top of the top. I think for riders, these Majors really motivate us, and we want to try and produce our best results there.

“Even though I had such a great result at CSIO Spruce Meadows, I think I have to say CHIO Aachen is my favourite. I live in Belgium, but Aachen is only around an hour drive from my yard. I have been and spectated there a few times and I think it is the best show in the world – I really hope I get to compete there one day.”

‘Incredible’ mare helps rider secure first leg of Rolex Grand Slam

“She just an incredible horse,” said German showjumper Daniel Deusser of his ever-obliging 12-year-old mare Killer Queen VDM after the duo achieved one of the hardest feats in the sport, jumping a triple clear to win the $3million CP International presented by Rolex at the Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament in Canada, on Sunday (11 September).

Daniel also became the live contender for the next leg of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, at Geneva in December.

“She was unbelievable to jump three clear rounds. Usually if you jump just two clear rounds, you’ve won already,” said Daniel. “But I’m able to enjoy this feeling now.”

This blue-riband event is one of the toughest classes in the world. Leopoldo Palacios’ formidable, technical tracks tower far higher than the average five-star grand prix and the Venezuelan doesn’t make any allowances for time-wasters. The stakes are raised even higher as the top 12 from the 40 starters jump a full second round before any riders on double clears – and they come few and far between in this contest – jump off against the clock.

Swiss rider Steve Guerdat lifted the prize last year as the sole double clear and was back in the mix this year as one of three jump-off contenders, lining up against Hickstead’s King George V Gold Cup winner Gilles Thomas of Belgium on Aretino 13 and the German hero.

With pressure and expectation pulsating round the arena, Steve opened proceedings with the tail-swishing 13-year-old gelding Venard De Cerisy. The pair skipped round until tapping out the first element of the double of swans – one of a handful of fences to have been bought in from the recent Herning World Championships – but they were quick and a 41.7sec four-fault round still applied the pressure to his rivals.

When the hotshot 24-year-old Belgian toppled two fences, it all came down to Daniel and this exquisite mare, who triumphed in last year’s Aachen grand prix. Daniel admitted he felt “pretty nervous” walking in beneath Spruce Meadows’ iconic clock tower, but this forward-thinking mare soared over every obstacle with a clean flick of her heels and the historic title was theirs.

“It’s a class I’ve followed since I was small,” he said. “I watched it on TV and I still have VHS cassettes at home that show the grand prix here. I’ve watched it over and over again, but I could never imagine being here. So to win the CP International presented by Rolex here in Spruce Meadows is a fantastic feeling.”

“She will definitely have a big dinner tonight and some carrots and sweets,” he added of the 12-year-old mare by Eldorado VD Zeshoek out of the legendary For Pleasure mare Derly Chin De Muze.

“At the beginning of the season, I set myself the goal to come here with her as I’d never been here before for the Grand Slam. She’s done well in these big grass rings. I think she enjoyed it.”

Daniel Deusser will now continue his journey once again towards the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping.

‘A week after I started riding, I decided to become a showjumper’: meet young rider preparing for one of world’s toughest classes

On Sunday (11 September) one of the toughest showjumping classes in the world, the CP International presented by Rolex, takes place at the CSIO Spruce Meadows Masters, Calgary, in Canada.

The competition boasts one of the sport’s richest prize-funds ($3,000,000), as well as acting as one of the four legs of the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, so it’s no wonder that an elite field of top showjumpers have descended on the historic venue this week.

One key competitor is young German showjumper Gerrit Nieberg, the current live contender for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping following his spectacular win at CHIO Aachen with Ben 431. This will be the 29-year-old rider’s first visit to Spruce Meadows.

“The Rolex Grand Slam is so traditional and unique,” says Gerrit, adding what a “real privilege” it is to be the live contender. “In our sport, there are so many shows each year and the Rolex Grand Slam is definitely a highlight as it consists of four of the best events. Everyone would love to be a winner at one of the Rolex Grand Slam events. It is viewed as a really important initiative among us riders and within the sport.

“It has always been a dream of mine [to be a live contender] and I have always looked up to the other riders who have achieved this. After my victory in the Rolex Grand Prix [in Aachen] it took a week or so to sink in that I am the live contender!”

Gerrit Nieberg: working hard to ‘achieve this dream’

Becoming the new live contender for the Grand Slam has also opened up a wealth of opportunities for Gerrit – after Spruce Meadows, he hopes to continue his bid in Geneva in December.

“This was something that I had not originally planned for because, due to my previous world ranking, I would not have been able to get into these shows,” says Gerrit, who is currently ranked 80th. “Now that I have a chance to compete at these shows, I want to do my best and give everything to continue this momentum.”

Gerrit is the son of double Olympic gold medallist Lars Nieberg, but only started riding when he was 13.

“Before this and growing up, I was more interested in other sports like soccer,” he says. “However, I did grow up with horses because of my parents, so there were always horses around and I decided to give it a go one day.

“My love for showjumping developed quickly and one week after starting to ride, I decided I wanted to become a professional showjumper. From that moment on, I was working and training hard every day to achieve this dream.

“My dad was the person who inspired me most when I was young due to all his experience and success. My dream has always been to be as good as he was, and still is, and maybe even a bit better one day! I still really look up to him in terms of who he is and how much he works each and every day. Although he is not showing competitively anymore, he is still riding every day at home. His motivation and support for everything that I do is unbelievable and very inspiring.”

Top horse Ben 431: ‘He is always fighting for you’

Spectators at the London leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour will have seen Gerrit Nieberg in action with his top horse, the Aachen-winning 11-year-old Ben 431 (Sylvain x Quincy Jones), who he describes as “really over-motivated”.

“Occasionally, it can be quite difficult to handle him and keep him calm, but that is also a really positive thing because it means he is always fighting for you and trying to do his best at times,” he says. “He is tireless – for example after three rounds at CHIO Aachen, he was not tired and would have been able to do another one or two rounds. After the victory at Aachen, he also understood that he had done something special. There were lots of media commitments and so he received lots of attention – even more than before. Now he is always looking out of his window for more attention, so I think he feels like a superstar!”

Gerrit is quick to credit his team for his success.

“My team is hugely important – it’s not just me and Ben,” says Gerrit, who is based at the stables of former German showjumper Hendrik Snoek, who owns most of his horses. “We are in the ring together for 80 seconds but there is so much work that goes on behind the scenes. The whole team play a key role in enabling us to have success in those 80 seconds in the ring. Often everyone only talks about the rider and the horse, but there is so much more to it. All the others are just as, or even more, important. They are the true unsung heroes.

“Success is what keeps me motivated,” he adds. “It is important to have a goal. I absolutely love riding, but I don’t know whether I could do it without the element of competition, the shows and something to work towards. I am working as hard as ever to enjoy more moments like this.”

Gerrit Nieberg is joined at Spruce Meadows by a host of other top riders including Peder Fredricson, Henrik von Eckermann, Martin Fuchs, Scott Brash, Steve Guerdat, Kent Farrington, Daniel Deusser and Harrie Smolders.

All the tracks will be designed as always by course-builder Leopoldo Palacios, who has earned a great reputation for setting challenging yet fair tests for the world’s best horses and riders.

Scott Brash is thwarted by a sneaky short-cut and an Irishman commutes between five-star shows: who won showjumping ribbons this week?

At the weekend we watched Scott Brash’s future star come of age – as well as his oh-so-close finish in the prestigious Aachen grand prix. There were international dashes between five-star shows for one Irish rider, groundbreaking team performances and a proud moment for connections of Cian O’Connor’s latest talent, who he thinks has all the credentials to go to the top.

Here is your weekly round-up of just some of the international sporting action from the world of showjumping.

BRASH IS THWARTED BY A SNEAKY SHORT-CUT…

Seven years after Scott Brash landed the prestigious Aachen grand prix with Hello Sanctos en route to winning the Rolex Grand Slam, he and top horse Hello Jefferson looked odds-on to repeat the feat when forging a strong lead with just one combination left to jump in Sunday’s five-way jump-off to decide the Rolex Grand Prix.

However, young German rider Gerrit Nieberg, son of Olympian Lars Nieberg, gambled with a short-cut to a formidable double on his scopey gelding Ben 431 and it was enough to secure a half-second advantage, which took them to the top of the leaderboard and made 29-year-old Gerrit the new live contender for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping.

“Everything is still unreal – I really didn’t expect this. Dreams definitely came true today,” he said.

Runner-up Scott reflected: “Feelings are a bit mixed because everyone wants to win Aachen, so it was a bit disappointing not to snatch a win. But at the same time I have to be thrilled with Jefferson, he’s jumped fantastic all week — he did everything that was asked of him and more. We were beaten fair and square; Gerrit had to risk it all, so all credit to him. I saw the [inside] line he took but it was tight and it was tough so I must say Gerrit did it really well.”

…BUT ANOTHER “HELLO” STAR IS THE TALK OF AACHEN

Earlier in the week, however, Scott Brash and the eight-year-old mare Hello Vittoria (above) produced a an exceptionally smart double-clear winning performance in the Sparkassen Youngsters Cup Final where they were up against some of the best young horses in the world.

Michael Quirke and Shane Breen bought Vittoria originally from a Fences Auction and Scott spotted the Kannan mare as a five-year-old while she was jumping at Hickstead with Georgia Tame. He has been producing her slowly to this level since.

“I was really happy with how she took to the atmosphere; it was a full stadium on Saturday night under the lights,” said Scott. “The tracks were difficult enough and they had a small water jump in there one day, but it’s great experience for the young horses and she felt like she grew up over the week. We’ve been ticking along quietly with her, but when you’re in Aachen you try to win!”

Scott describes her as a “very level-headed mare”.

“She keeps her jump, she’s very careful and a very straightforward horse to do everything with,” said Scott. “So it’s just about producing her in a nice way and showing her the world.”

CIAN O’CONNOR’S “UNEXPECTED” WIN

Ireland’s Cian O’Connor and the nine-year-old Emerald stallion Taj Mahal (below) won the 1.55m CSI3* grand prix at Knokke Hippique, Belgium. Course-designer Gregory Bodo had presented the field of 57 competitors with “quite a few technical hurdles”, which he said required riders “to have their heads in the game” and Cian produced the faster of only two double clears for victory.

“I’ve really taken my time with this horse — he’s definitely the most careful horse I’ve ever ridden; he’s so clever,” said Cian, who has high hopes for Sue Magnier’s stallion. “I’ve done a whole season really of 1.40ms and two-star grands prix.

“I was not expecting a win today. Taj Mahal is still only nine years old. It is his first three-star grand prix and it’s under lights.”

Cian spotted the stallion competing at young horse shows and he was given the name Taj Mahal by his new owner Sue Magnier, who was there on the night to witness their success first-hand.

“He had been on my radar then we managed to secure him last year,” said Cian. “I’m very lucky that Mrs Magnier owns him — her huge interest in horses comes from racing but she is now breaking through into showjumping through her grandchildren, Tom and Max Wachman, who are obviously doing very well.

“I am so happy his previous rider Dieter Vermeiren got to see him win here. He made the horse and helped me a lot with him, so I was able to take him to the next level — it was great teamwork.”

An emotional Dieter added: “We started out together when we were both young. Now he wins these amazing competitions. We have a great relationship with Cian. They are an amazing combination, especially because instead of wanting to change the horse, he knows and reinforces his strongest assets.”

EMERGING TALENT SHINES IN YOUTH EQUESTRIAN GAMES

Also on the agenda at Aachen’s World Equestrian Festival was the Youth Equestrian Games for riders aged 15 to 18, where Great Britain’s representative Claudia Moore on borrowed horse Largo Van De Molenhoek jumped brilliantly to finish sixth individually and help Team Europe to second place after a thrilling three-way jump-off to decide the podium.

“I knew Mimi [Gochman, from North America’s winning team] had an incredible round and I wanted to match that,” said Claudia. “I kept quite cool, calm and collected and went in and I had so much fun. I had my entire team behind me and I think that was the thing that drove me the most! Some people in their professional career never get to jump at Aachen and for us to be able to do it at this age, and have this type of experience early on, is amazing.”

South Africa’s Thomas van Rijckevorsel claimed individual gold ahead of Morocco’s Jed Guerraoui in silver and USA rider Mimi in bronze.

“I have three top open horses at home that jump at 1.40m and three young horses as well as a dressage horse”, said the winning rider from Johannesburg, who was competing in Europe for the first time. “After this week I definitely want to come back and jump at Aachen again — I’d love to have a career in this sport, it’s my life!”

SAYWELL’S RISING STAR COMES OF AGE AT BOLESWORTH

Back on home soil, Louise Saywell and Kingsborough Kasper triumphed in the CSI3* grand prix at the Dodson & Horrell Bolesworth International Horse Show. The nine-year-old Kannan stallion “wants to win”, his delighted rider said.

“He loves being competitive as much as I do,” said Louise. “This was a big step up for him as he hadn’t done a 1.50m before, but he has a lot of talent.”

DARRAGH KENNY COMMUTES BETWEEN FIVE-STAR SHOWS

Not content with competing at one five-star show this week, Ireland’s Darragh Kenny commuted between Aachen and the Longines Global Champions Tour of Monaco, competing at each venue on alternate days. It was an ambitious strategy, which paid off with an impressive runner-up spot in the Monaco grand prix riding Volnay Du Boisdeville. He reached round two of the Rolex grand prix in Aachen on VDL Cartello, where they just picked up four faults to be placed ninth.

“Second seems to be my position and it’s not exactly where I would like to be,” he said from Monaco. “But Volnay jumped unbelievable. He has been a great horse for me since I took him over from Teddy Vlock. I was a little slow in the jump-off and that is where I lost it. I definitely knew I left the door open, I did one more stride to the vertical then I would have liked and then I was a little slow to the last and I knew I was behind today.”

The winner in Monaco was Austria’s Max Kühner, securing his first LGCT grand prix and a ticket to the Super Grand Prix at the Prague Playoffs at the end of the season. Amazingly, the top three riders on the podium — Max, Darragh and Belgium’s Olivier Philippaerts (H&M Miro) — were the same three riders as the previous year, with Max just going one better this time.

“It was really important for me to catch Darragh this year because last year I was in the lead but he was just a bit faster than me, so this year I really had the mission to beat him,” said Max. “In this sport, we don’t expect things we fight for it and of course, the golden ticket is something all the other riders are also fighting for and I am very happy to have it now.”

A MILESTONE NATIONS CUP — WITH A DOUBLE CLEAR FROM HARRY CHARLES

It’s been five years since Great Britain last fielded a team for the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Nations Cup of Aachen but the Union Flag flew proudly as the quartet of Ben Maher, Harry Charles, Scott Brash and John Whitaker finished on the podium after a hard-fought contest on Thursday night (30 June).

“I’m absolutely over the moon with the performances tonight,” said Di Lampard, Great Britain’s performance manager. “To come here to this stadium and have those rounds — we’re going the right way towards the end of the season.”

FROM MOUNTED GAMES TO MONTE CARLO GLORY

A few weeks ago, British teenager Isabella Beecroft-Luckett was representing England in the Pony Club games at Royal Windsor but this week she was leading a prize-giving ceremony in front of royalty and celebrities at the Longines Global Champions Tour of Monaco.

The 14-year-old rider teamed up with speedy Frenchman Olivier Robert to win the Longines Pro-Am team relay.

“I COULDN’T BE PROUDER OF MY HORSE”

USA rider Giavanna Rinaldi may have had her “dream come true” when winning the Pan American Grand Prix presented by Rolex at Spruce Meadows, Canada, but she gave full credit to her horse Cosmona for her first five-star win, which came after a tactical two-way jump-off.

“I’ve always dreamt of coming to this show — it’s been a big dream of mine,” said Giavanna. “I couldn’t be prouder of my horse and the team behind us.”

The two-star equivalent went to Kent Farrington on new ride Chato Lou, just two hundredths of a second quicker than Robert Blanchette of Ireland (pictured top).

SAMPSON CONTINUES HIS WINNING STREAK

Fresh from his first five-star grand prix victory, British rider Matt Sampson landed the 1.40m winning round at Spruce Meadows, Canada, once again riding Curraghgraigue Obos Flight. He posted the winning double clear in 51.23sec.

“IT’S AMAZING TO JUMP MY FIRST DOUBLE CLEAR FOR THE TEAM”

Great Britain’s Lily Attwood (Calvaro’s Up To Date) teamed up with Olivier Philippaerts for the Stockholm Hearts powered by H&M We Love Horses to clinch victory in the Global Champions League of Monaco. The London Knights pair of Mike Kawai and team debutant Sam Hutton finished second, ahead of Berlin Eagles, represented this week by Eoin McMahon and Philipp Weishaupt, in third.

“It felt amazing today to jump my first double clear for the team, my mare really lit up in this arena and to have this win with Olivier feels amazing,” said Lily. “Ginger is quite a small horse so I think this arena suits her so much.”

A DOUBLE WIN FOR MCLAIN WARD – WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT?

USA rider McLain Ward landed a brace of big class wins at Aachen – Friday’s 1.60m RWE Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia and Wednesday’s Turkish Airlines Prize of Europe, both riding Contagious.

“He’s on really good form and we’re aiming him towards the world championships – it’s one of the reasons we had this week planned for him, so we’ll stick to our plan and hopefully be in the mix,” he said.

‘He will not accept cowardice’: top riders share why Olympic showjumper Eric Lamaze has become a true legend

The showjumping world was rocked by Canadian Olympic gold medal-winning showjumper Eric Lamaze’s recent announcement that he would be retiring from the sport owing to ill health. He has instead taken the helm of Canada’s showjumping team in his new role as chef d’equipe but the jumping circuit is certainly poorer without Eric’s beautiful horsemanship, competitive edge and of course his breathtaking speed in the ring.

Some of his biggest fans and dearest friends have come forward to highlight what has made the Rolex Testimonee a showjumping legend.

Swiss showjumper and fellow Olympic gold medallist Steve Guerdat says that it is the legacy between Eric and Spruce Meadows – the venue of some of his greatest victories – that stands out for him.

“It is unimaginable what he achieved in that ring,” he says. “Hickstead is one of the all-time greats and so similar to Eric – they are one pair I can’t stop watching again and again.”

Steve says the most useful thing he learnt from Eric, whom he describes as “confident and positive” is: “Never doubt, always stay positive and keep moving forward.”

Eric’s trainee Tiffany Foster, a regular member of the Canadian team, also remembers Calgary as a highlight in Eric’s career.

“My favourite Rolex Grand Slam Major memory with Eric is when he won the grand prix in Calgary on Hickstead for the first time in 2007,” she says. “It was an incredibly inspirational moment that I was able to witness first-hand. I’ll never forget the goosebumps that ran down my spine and the tears of joy when he cleared the final jump. It will be seared in my memory forever!

“I started working for Eric when Hickstead [pictured below] was nine years old and got to be along for the whole ride. In my opinion, he is the best showjumper of all time. He wanted to win as bad as Eric did and they were a perfect match. They would both try to win any class they entered; while most horses need a round or two of schooling in between classes, Hickstead never did. He was a joy to watch compete because you could feel his heart was in it. Truly spectacular!”

Tiffany says she learned to be resilient through Eric.

“There is no room for not trying your hardest every time when Eric is involved,” she says. “He pushes you to give your all and he will not accept cowardice of any kind. He has made me stronger than I would have ever been without him.”

Young USA rider Spencer Smith was first impressed by Eric at the CHI Geneva and learnt to believe in himself thanks to Eric’s advice.

“I was very inexperienced and young,” says Spencer. “He really made me believe I could win the Rolex Grand Prix. I went into the ring so confident; he has that effect on people.”

For Spencer, who describes Eric as “determined”, it is his 2016 Olympic bronze medal-winning mare Fine Lady who stands out.

“She has the biggest heart and she would do anything for Eric,” he says. “Their partnership was amazing.”

‘The rankings system is an addiction for riders’: jumping owner speaks out about the sport’s ‘problem’

Stephan Conter is a familiar name on the showjumping circuit as founder of the world famous Stephex Stables, horse breeder and owner of some top horses including Daniel Deusser’s Olympic ride Killer Queen VDM and Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z. He also hosts five-star shows such as Knokke Hippique and the Brussels Stephex Masters.

The Belgian ventured into horse ownership over 20 years ago, teaming up with Daniel, currently ranked number seven in the world, a decade ago.

“I decided that I really wanted to get to the top level of the sport,” says Stephan. “I made the decision to find a top-level rider, and my decision was Daniel. I then threw everything into that decision and really went for it. Once you start to win grands prix and become a serious competitor it becomes very addictive, and you want to continue that success by having the best horses and riders.

“I now have multiple riders, including my two daughters [Emilie and Zoé] and watching them succeed on my horses is very motivating for me. I am also very proud when I see horses that I have bred or sold doing well. We sell a lot of horses – in the grand prix in Wellington, Florida, recently, we had two horses that I still own in the jump-off as well as a few others that we used to own, and watching the horses being successful gives me such a kick.”

‘Every horse is for sale’

Talking about his hugely successful breeding programme and providing horses for his riders, Stephan explains that “every horse is for sale”.

“I do not keep all my best horses because if you look at all of the horses we have sold, there are so many that have achieved incredible results,” he says. “For example, if you look at the Olympic Games last year, we had seven horses jumping there and I only owned one, so that shows the quality of the horses that we sell.

“If a horse is a really good match for one of my riders, then I will wait for a season before we think about selling that horse. Davidoff De Lassus [his 13-year-old stallion] is a very good match for Zoé, and so we will keep him for another year unless we have an exceptional offer.

“Emilie is more of a seller than her sister; she is willing to sell when a good offer is made. Zoé would like to keep every horse, but I think she is starting to understand that we are normal people, and we still need to make a living out of the sport to continue our beautiful story.

“Firstly, I am a businessman and I like things to go quickly, which is why I mainly buy horses around six- to eight-years-old, but I still do run a breeding programme,” says Stephan. “These horses can be ready to sell in around 24 months and that is how I like to work. I am open to selling any horse, if not I would own thousands of horses. For me it is not a problem to own that many horses – the problem is that it is too complicated to train that many horses. To train a horse up to the level where it could be a grand prix winner you need to educate them with the highest care and quality. So therefore, we do sell a lot of the horses we breed unbroken.

“The level of breeding in Belgium is extremely high – the best in the world, I think – and that means the horses are not cheap, but it does mean that you have a chance to choose the best horse for your rider. I make my decisions on which horse to buy for which rider based on my gut feeling. I cannot explain why I choose a horse sometimes, but I just trust my feeling. So far, this has brought me much success.”

‘It’s an addiction – and that is a problem’

But, says Stephan, there is a real problem with the modern sport.

“A few months ago, we had two riders in the world’s top 10, so you need to have a lot of horses to ensure they can stay up in the rankings,” he says. “It is not like it was 20 years ago when the riders could take the winter season off, now there are shows every weekend. I think the rankings system is an addiction to the riders and that is a problem.

“To continue to be at the top of the sport riders need to compete almost every weekend to ensure they continue to gain ranking points. So therefore, we need a lot of younger riders to train the horses at home when our top riders are out competing. There are a lot of young and talented riders in our sport right now. I believe that you cannot just discover your next top rider tomorrow, you need to work with them for a couple of years and ensure they are trained properly. Some of the top riders in the world now were not the best when they were 18, but they had an excellent work ethic and dedicated themselves to the sport. It is nice to see that with hard work you can get the results that you deserve.”

‘Tobago Z could win the Rolex Grand Slam’

It could be a very exciting year in particular for Daniel Deusser with both Tobago Z and Killer Queen jumping so well.

“Killer Queen has a lot of character. She is a beautiful lady, but she has a lot of character and that can be difficult for Daniel sometimes,” reveals Stephan. “She has all the scope you could want in a top-class show jumper, and she wants to be the best in the world. She has to compete against the best horses in the world in the ring, but she also has to compete against her neighbour in the stables, Tobago Z. She has to prove to Stephex Stables that she is better than him; we put them next to each other in the stables, so they know they have to compete against each other to be the best.

“Maybe together Killer Queen VDM and Tobago Z, can win the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping. We nearly won the Rolex Grand Prix at CHIO Aachen in 2019, but Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z was beaten by Kent Farrington and Gazelle. We actually sold Gazelle to Kent, so we were beaten by one of our own horses. But I think Tobago Z could win the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping, he is in great form at the moment.”

Stephan underlines the importance of communicating with his riders, saying he speaks to them “about everything”.

“We choose which shows each horse will go to, but I do have a strong opinion on which shows we should prioritise, which are the Rolex Grand Slam Majors and the other Rolex shows,” he says. “All the riders agree with me, as these shows are simply the best in the world. Hopefully, one day people will say the same about the Brussels Stephex Masters. It is very exciting that CSIO Roma and now La Baule are also supported by Rolex. In my opinion, shows supported by Rolex are on a different level to all the other shows, and all my riders love to compete at them.”

Stephan and his team are currently building a new stadium for the Brussels Stephex Masters and there will be a new venue for Knokke Hippique next year, as well as an exciting new show in Marbella coming soon.

‘We are so lucky to do this together’: meet the husband and wife competing against each other every week

Five-star riders Angelica Augustsson Zanotelli and Marlon Modolo Zanotelli are one of the most successful husband-and-wife teams on the showjumping circuit. So how does it feel to compete against your spouse every week?

“I am very competitive, not just with the horses, even if we are playing cards or games I want to win!” says Marlon, who represents Brazil and is currently ranked number six in the world.

“I always let him win!” says Swedish-born Angelica.

“Angelica is also very competitive in the ring and when the time comes, she always delivers and makes it happen,” says Marlon. “I think we are both very competitive, but not against each other, we always support each other and try to make the other one better.”

The couple are based in Belgium with their young children and they share similar principles when it comes to riding and training their horses, too.

“We are so lucky to be able to do this together,” says Angelica. “Every day we train together, jump together, we exchange ideas together, we are a really good team. It is a situation many riders would like to have, so we feel very fortunate to be in this position.

“It is definitely one of the reasons I have improved so much as a rider,” says Marlon, who represented Brazil at the Tokyo Olympics last year. “Over the past five years Angelica has been there for me and helped me a lot along the way. We have had different experiences in life, she [Angelica] was based in Germany for so many years for example. I think we really help each other and improve each other, and I think that is what makes us so strong.”

Any arguments?

When asked if they ever argue over horses, Angelica says “No” while Marlon says with a laugh: “Yes, of course…! When Angelica was pregnant, I had to ride her horses and she was the most difficult owner I have ever had…”

He goes on to explain: “I would say the horses pick us, instead of us deciding which horses we would like. We try to see who fits the horses best and see how it goes. Sometimes we change horses throughout the season depending on where we are competing.”

Describing Marlon’s strengths, Angelica says: “He is extremely talented and has an incredible feeling and way of understanding a horse when he rides. He has an amazing ability to make the horse work with him and creates a very special harmony with the horses. He is also very competitive, it doesn’t matter what horse he gets on, he always wants to win and usually does. It is so important to understand the horses and how to work with them, and Marlon has a very special gift to be able to do this so well.”

Of Angelica, Marlon reveals: “She is also extremely gifted in understanding horses. She is very patient and listens to the horse, which is sometimes very hard to do. You can see how much her horses improve when she starts working with them. She gives so much time to the horses and is very good at the flatwork as well as the jumping and has a very good understanding of how to train them at home. She is a very complete rider, so for me to be around her so much, I learn so much from her.”

‘It’s all down to the people I have around me’

The pair met while they were both based at Ashford Farm in Belgium and left in 2016 to set up on their own. They attribute their success to their entire team.

“The owners I am working with are very supportive, our entire team at home is amazing,” says Marlon. “I have been away for two weeks competing, but we have some wonderful riders and grooms at home who have been taking care of the horses. Angelica has been riding Grand Slam VDL for me to get him ready. So, this is the main reason I am having this success – it is down to the people I have around me and I am very grateful to have such a strong team behind me.”

Of the 11-year-old Grand Slam VDL (Cardento 933 x Heartbreaker), Marlon says: “He developed a lot last year. I have very high expectations for him this year, he has some great experience and is feeling very good at the moment.”

Angelica’s top horse at the moment is 12-year-old mare Kalinka Van De Nachtegaele.

“She is a wonderful mare who has had some great experience and good results already,” she says. “My second horse is a nine-year-old mare called Danna RJ, she is a little bit green for this [top] level, mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she hasn’t had as much experience as we would have liked. But she has a lot of potential, and I am very excited to see how she will do.”

Looking ahead to the rest of 2022, it could be a very exciting time for this showjumping couple.

“I have a very exciting year ahead of me, I have some opportunities that I didn’t have before,” says Angelica. “To compete at a Rolex Grand Slam Major is completely new for me. I have also qualified for the World Cup Jumping Final for the first time, so I am very much looking forward to that.”

Marlon says: “I am really looking forward to the Rolex Grand Slam events. Obviously, I really want to win one of the Majors, that is a huge aim for me. Last year I got very close, and it is definitely one of my dreams as a rider to win at least one, but hopefully more, hopefully three in a row! This year we have the World showjumping championships, it is something that we look forward to, and to win a big championships has always been my aim as a rider. So yes, a very exciting year ahead hopefully!”
