She produces all of our buying guides and gift guides, as well as organising product testing and bringing you news about the latest products to hit the market. If there’s a new launch, Franchesca is the first person to hear about it. She works with Georgia Guerin to bring you the best deals and is passionate about arming Horse & Hound’s readers with honest, unbiased product reviews. Franchesca loves letting riders and horse owners know what products are coming out, how to make their lives easier and how to spend their money wisely.

Franchesca’s lifelong love of horses started from a very young age as her mother was a riding instructor. She was unbeatable in the lead-rein showjumping and gymkhana games with her pony, Muffit. They regularly attended Pony Club and, as she lives on Hayling Island, spent plenty of time riding on the beach.

After leaving school she went on to study at Sparsholt College, where she completed a National Diploma in equine management and BSc(Hons) degree in Equine Studies. She also competed on the inter-college riding team.

Once graduated, Franchesca went to work at her local tack shop and this is where her love for products really began. After working in retail she moved on to wholesale with Snowhill Trade Saddlery and worked her way up from sales advisor to office manager.

Her next challenge was working at Horse&Rider and PONY magazines as a sales executive. She then became Production Editor, which meant handling everything product related, from buying guides to product testing. She also worked on Equestrian Trade News and Endurance magazine as part of this role.

Franchesca is known at her yard as the “catalogue queen” for her extensive knowledge of brands and products, and she has made it her mission to encourage people to shop with a purpose. She loves putting products through their paces and keeping a finger on the pulse for what's new in safety, such as the best body protectors for children, and fashion. She’s clocked up hundreds of miles in her favourite Aigle wellies and tested litres of the best whitening shampoos, and now dedicates hours of her time sourcing the best products online so you don’t have to.

When she is not putting kit through its paces, she can be found riding, running around after her two miniature dachshunds or with her son making sand castles on the beach.

Franchesca owns an Irish Draught gelding “Sekonda”, and two shire horses, “Roxy” and “Sammy” who she shares with her partner. She also competes with her friend’s 15.2hh Irish Draught mare “Barbie”. Unfortunately for Franchesca, both the Irish Draughts are grey, so she spends a lot of time keeping them clean!

If you have a product you would like Franchesca to know about, please email her on franchesca.slack@futurenet.com
</dc:description>

</dc:description>

The best riding tights and leggings have proved to be very popular in recent years. An alternative to jodhpurs and breeches, riding tights are more to a pair of leggings you might wear at the gym or a yoga class. They should be lightweight, very comfortable and offer great freedom of movement. Being pull-on in design and usually made of a four-way stretch material means they’re easy to get on, too.

Most will feature some sort of grip to help you remain secure in the saddle and this could be in a full-seat or knee-patch style. Other features to look out for include flat seams (unless seamless), reflective detailing and mesh panelling. Many come with pockets on the thigh to fit your phone in while riding, but some styles also offer zipped pockets on the leg or at the back of the waistband for added security.

Best riding tights: H&H’s quick guide

Best riding tights overall: Ariat Ascent Half Grip

Most comfortable riding leggings: Mochara Technical

Best water resistant riding leggings: Holland Cooper Chiltern

Best technical riding leggings: Horzehoods V-Seam Air2

Best riding leggings for petite riders: Flexars Original

Best value riding tights: Dublin Everyday

Best riding tights and leggings for the summer

Ariat Ascent Half Grip Riding Tights

Colours: Navy or black

Sizes: XS–XL

H&H Rating: 10/10, H&H Approved

Reasons to buy

Smart sporty look

Technical fabric that’s supportive

Secure phone pockets

Reasons to avoid

Regular length came up a bit short

These tights are designed with flattering compression panels to offer additional support to your muscles and joints. More like leggings you might wear to the gym, riding tights do not have any front or zip closure, but still usually feature either a grip full seat or knee patches – although not all do – to help you stay secure in the saddle. Riding tights are also often available in a wider range of colours and styles.

This guide is all about summer riding tights, but if you’re looking for something warmer for the cooler weather, check out this selection of the best winter riding tights.

How to choose the best riding tights

When thinking about all the popular features mentioned earlier on, the first consideration you’ll need to make is how much grip you want. Leggings are inherently less grippy than breeches as the material is usually smoother, but you’ll be able to choose between full seat, knee patch and no additional grip – if you want more security in the saddle, go for more grip.

Secondly, it’s important to consider the style – do you prefer high-waisted or like the look of mesh inserts? There are lots of variations to choose between. Finally, the small but everyday practicality differences, such as pocket size, are what will make a good pair of leggings a great pair that you love to wear. Some pockets are large enough to hold the bigger phones, while others have zips or envelope flaps to make them more secure – these are all features you should look out for and that our testers have considered.

Some of the riding tights were tested by the H&H team so we can give you a great insight as to what they’re really like – find out more about <a Martha has bred two event horses by Cevin Z from her own horse of a lifetime, Fizz, one of which is now eventing at CCI4* with Alice Hallows.

Martha is currently enjoying producing a seven-year-old ex-racehorse, Mac, who she believes might need someone better and braver than her to do him justice in eventing. She enjoys jumping, hacking and fitness work.

Martha is also besotted with dogs – with a huge soft spot for springer spaniels – though with no competitive ambitions in this sphere whatsoever. After growing up with assorted liver and white springers, she had two rescue dogs for 14 years, one a street dog from Gambia who was abandoned at three weeks old. Now, her constant companion, whether by her feet at her desk or walking cross-country courses, is Fidget, an extremely energetic and habitually muddy black and white springer.

Martha also writes for expert advice guide PetsRadar, and was editor for Petplan Equine’s magazine Paces for seven years.
</dc:description>

When I first put them on, they had an almost slippery, silky feel – which is very nice on the skin but I was concerned they would not be robust enough for a day’s yard chores and riding. They felt ideal for whizzing out on a run! But despite their lightweight appearance and feel, they stood up well to all a day’s work and were comfortable both in and out of the saddle.

Comfort

A highlight is how comfortable these tights are. With the wide elastic waistband, they are easy to pull on and it’s a bonus in hot weather particularly not to feel constricted round the waist. They are very stretchy, so although they look tiny when you pull them out of the packaging, they conform nicely round the leg and bum. I was surprised how flattering they are given they so lightweight, but they are supportive in the right places!

The elastic waistband and stretch fabric make the tights very comfortable (Image credit: creditUnknown)

For summertime they are ideal, because the lightweight fabric doesn’t overheat you despite being close-fitting.

Mountain Horse Riding Tights: in the saddle

Riding-wise, my concerns over their slipperiness were quickly allayed. The silicon grip pimples extend right from the seat down to mid calf, and do their job well. I unintentionally brushed past some brambles and branches and the fabric stood up well with no snagging. An additional bonus was when I was washing my horse down afterwards and spraying myself accidentally, the fabric dried almost immediately.

There is silicone grip on the inner leg and the seat (Image credit: creditUnknown)

There are mobile pockets on each leg, and I found them to be at a suitable position not to be noticeable when riding, but within easy access. The dark navy colour is smart and I’d be happy to wear these both on the yard for every day and for lessons or clinics in summertime.

Sometimes riding tights come up a bit short, but these are a good length, going down to the jodhpur boot. I tried a size EU36 (UK 8 or S) and found it to be spot-on. I am a UK8 and while I wouldn’t want them any smaller, they fitted well.

Verdict

A great pair of summer riding tights. We will have had our hands on it and given it a really thorough going over before trying it on ourselves or our horses and using it. The information we can give you after this first look will give you some sense of what it’s like to use, even if it’s only an initial view. As soon as we’ve given it a more thorough test, we will update the review with a full scoring and additional thoughts.

You might also be interested This fitted jacket is made from an anti-pilling polyester material, which creates a super soft and cosy fleece. The jacket is windproof and very comfortable to wear, making it a must-have for around the yard.

This jacket features flattering embossed contrast side panels, which gives it an attractive, sporty-looking appearance. The jacket also has two practical and secure zipped front pockets, which are perfect for your phone, keys, or treats. These pockets are also well hidden along the lining of the embossed panels — so they don’t look unsightly. In addition to this, the jacket also has a contrast zip up the front and contrast cuff detailing, adding to its attractive appearance.

Aside from its attention to detail, my favourite thing about this fleece jacket is just how breathable and easy it is to ride in. I even find this jacket smart enough to wear over your competition shirt when warming up at an event, or to wear to the shops after you have been to the yard.

The only downfall of this jacket is that the fabric sometimes bunches up in areas, however, this is not a major point and does not affect the jacket’s performance.

Buy Now: Horseware Keeva Technical Fleece at Ebay from £35.95

Verdict

Overall, this jacket is a really nice addition to any rider’s wardrobe

This type of jacket is not normally what I would go for, the soft arms and the quilted body is more of a sporty look that I am used to. Although, I was excited to try this well-made, quality product.

When on, this jacket is flattering and stylish but very comfortable and doesn’t restrict your movement at all. It is short and therefore feels great in the saddle. The jersey sleeves meant that I have complete freedom of my arms. I felt very comfortable when doing dressage, showjumping and cross-country training.

There is a secure, robust zip up the middle and two perfect-sized zip-up pockets for your phone. I can wear it during the summer, with the benefit of a long sleeve and good pockets, without getting hot. It also has performed as a great layer under a larger coat due to the non-restrictive jersey arms and lightweight but warm body.

I feel that this product will be most helpful to me during the winter as a layer. I have also wearing it off the horse, especially when I have gone on a rare run

Verdict

Overall I have been pleasantly surprised by this chic and comfortable jacket, which has been worn in a variety of situations.
The owner of a new business selling vintage and classic riding wear says she is seeing “massive demand” for her products and services.

Mia Woodford, who set up The Vintage Tack Room earlier this year, says side saddle habits and men’s hunt coats are selling particularly well.

Mrs Woodford has a showroom in West Sussex, on the Leconfield estate and sells items through her website.

The Vintage Tack Room incorporates Field and Country Antiques, which she bought from Louise Chatterton-Crane earlier this year.

“Vintage can often be a euphemism for second-hand rubbish — but mine is most definitely not,” said Mrs Woodford.

“Vintage means the best of its kind. I have just got in a hunting coat, made by Sandon in 1914 for a chap who survived the First World War. It is complete with all his stocks and breeches,” she added.

“The other day I found a hunting whip with initials on it — I spent ages on Google researching it and eventually found it was the eighth birthday present for the daughter of Lord Ingleby in 1923. Where I can, I will write down the story and send it with the item to the new owner.”

The Vintage Tack Room also stocks items that Mrs Woodford calls “vintage in the making” — made of such quality that they are likely to be sought after in 50 year’s time. These include Oliver Brown breeches and moleskin stocks and shirts.

The showroom also hires out vintage kit for clients who would like to try hunting or side saddle.

Gifts suitable for riders — such as prints and jewellery — are planned for next year.

Visit www.vintagetackroom.com
