Farewell to riding school founder who leaves a legacy ‘built on an unwavering love of horses’

Joy Leggett, the founder of Arundel Riding Centre and a lifelong champion of equestrian sport and accessibility died on 23 May, aged 95.

Known to most as Mrs Leggett, Joy leaves a legacy built on determination and an unwavering love of horses.

Born without an equestrian background, Joy discovered her passion early. As a child, she crafted jewellery, which her father sold so she could pay for riding lessons.

That early spark grew into a lifelong vocation. In 1960, with only two ponies and little financial support, she founded Arundel Riding Centre.

She used her drive and hard work to start the centre from scratch and make it one of the most adored and one of the country’s oldest British Horse Society-approved riding centres. In 1973, she oversaw the construction of the indoor arena – an uncommon and forward‑thinking addition – which remains a key part of the centre.

Joy was also a competitive rider and dedicated breeder, raising five generations of horses from her first mare Betty Lou. Among her most enduring contributions was starting her 45‑year partnership with the RDA, offering people with disabilities the chance to experience the joy and freedom of riding. Her commitment to inclusivity and community touched countless lives.

Joy raised three children, Nichola, Jeremy and Alison – each inherited her passion for horses. Alison now runs the Arundel Riding Centre alongside Joy’s grandson Rory. Joy was proud of her five grandchildren and their diverse paths: Rory, a riding coach; Rebecca, an opera singer; Holly, a stand‑up comedian; Ivan, a vet; and Verity, an equine physiotherapist.

Courage, creativity and a belief in building opportunities where none existed defined Joy’s life. Her influence lives on in her family, her horses and the thriving riding centre she created from nothing but determination and love.

Her family, friends and the many riders whose lives she enriched will miss her dearly.

‘An absolute privilege’: equestrians recognised for ‘extraordinary contributions’ by The King

Members of the equestrian community who have gone above and beyond in their sectors have been recognised in the The King’s Birthday Honours list.

A riding school yard manager, Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) volunteers and a top jockey are among those named in the honours, which “mark the extraordinary contributions and service of people across the UK”.

Tower Farm Riding School yard manager Debbie Henderson was appointed MBE for services to equestrianism and the community of Edinburgh and the south of Scotland.

Debbie grew up riding at Tower Farm, Edinburgh, then went to work at the Royal Mews in London as a groom. She returned to work at Tower Farm in 1987 and has been there since, teaching generations to ride.

Debbie and Tower Farm are involved in a variety of parades, including the People’s Procession, the Edinburgh Riding of the Marches and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, providing horses for the Army and members of the royal family to ride.

Debbie, who was nominated by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, told H&H the MBE “is something you never expect”.

“I had no idea I’d been put forward,” she said. “Horses are such nice characters and I just enjoy helping people to enjoy them. From the little four-year-olds coming for their weekly fix to teaching the Lord Provost, to see them all enjoying it, it’s been amazing.”

RDA volunteer Doug Smith and South Bucks RDA group chair Di Redfern were appointed MBEs for services to disabled riders.

Doug is a former mounted police officer but his career was cut short by a double spinal fracture in 1995. He has since dedicated more than 35 years to the RDA; playing “a key role in shaping” the charity’s national championships, contributing to national steering groups and championing equine welfare.

“To receive this award for doing something I love, and that is also so worthwhile, is an absolute privilege,” said Doug, who is also a big supporter of para equestrian sport.

“RDA was my salvation after my accident, and I have found great purpose in giving back, sharing what is possible and helping others discover what they can achieve.”

Di has volunteered with the RDA since the 1960s. She has made a “lasting contribution” to the South Bucks group and wider RDA movement alongside significant contribution to the development of para equestrian sport. Her work has focused on ensuring disabled people can access the “highest quality coaching and support, carefully tailored to their individual needs”.

“I am honoured to receive an MBE and would like to thank everyone associated with South Bucks RDA and RDA UK. The work we do is a true team effort,” she said.

RDA UK chief executive Michael Bishop said the charity is delighted to see the “outstanding” recognitions and that Doug and Di’s commitment to the RDA has made a “lasting difference to disabled people”.

“We offer our warmest congratulations,” he said.

Ryan Moore appointed MBE in The King’s Birthday Honours list

Three-time British champion Flat jockey Ryan Moore was appointed MBE for services to racing and British sport. Trainer Aidan O’Brien told At The Races “nobody deserves it more”.

“It’s very special. I’m delighted for him and all his family,” said Aidan.

Lanwades Stud owner Kirsten Rausing, founder of the Alborada Trust that funds medical and veterinary causes, was appointed CBE for services to charity, animal welfare, horseracing and bloodstock. Former Downpatrick racecourse manager Richard Lyttle was appointed MBE for services to the racing industry and Angela Tattersall of St John Ambulance, who has worked at York racecourse for almost 50 years, was appointed MBE for her services to the charity.

Pressures on riding schools and the challenges they face highlighted in new lesson price data

New data on the average price of riding school lessons has highlighted the rising cost of learning to ride and reopened the conversation about pressures riding schools face in today’s economy.

Booking platform EC Pro collected anonymous lesson booking and pricing data through its system from more than 200 UK riding schools and equestrian centres in 2025.

It analysed the information and has created a 2026 price guide, which a spokesperson told H&H is designed to provide an “indicative snapshot of the current market and highlight broader pricing trends […] rather than create a formal industry index”.

The average price for a one-hour adult group lesson ranged from £31 in the north west of England to £54 in the south east. For children, this ranged from £31 in the same region, to £53 in London. Nationally, 30-minute adult group lessons average around £35.

“Affordability matters if we want to keep the sport accessible. Horse riding is an incredibly valuable activity for so many people, but for many who like the idea of riding – or experienced riders – it can feel increasingly expensive,” said EC Pro chief executive Beth Lothian.

“What this data shows is that there is no single ‘normal’ price. Costs vary significantly depending on where you are in the country and the type of lesson or activity you’re booking.

“At the same time, unlike most service businesses, riding schools are also running a full-time animal welfare operation and the horses don’t care what the economy is doing.”

She added: “For riding schools, this is not just about pricing. It is about communication, customer trust and long-term retention.

“If customers understand what goes into the experience they are paying for, and if the booking experience is straightforward and professional, they are far more likely to keep coming back. That is a responsibility for all in the equestrian world.”

British Horse Society (BHS) chief operating officer Sarah Phillips said that riding schools are the “backbone of equestrianism in Britain”.

“They provide vital access to horses for people of all ages and backgrounds, while promoting education, wellbeing and high standards of horse welfare. For many riders, a riding school is where their journey with horses first begins,” she told H&H.

“However, riding schools continue to face significant challenges in 2026, including rising operating costs, staffing shortages and increasing pressure on affordability for participants. Many centres are working incredibly hard to maintain lessons, care standards and accessibility within their local communities, despite ongoing financial pressures and increasing operational demands.”

Ms Phillips added that the BHS continues to support riding schools and equestrian businesses through practical guidance, professional development opportunities and access to industry expertise, to help centres “build resilience and adapt to changing demands”.

“At BHS, we continue to support riding schools and equestrian businesses through practical guidance, professional development opportunities and access to industry expertise, helping centres build resilience and adapt to changing demands,” she said. “From business support and workforce development initiatives to training and networking opportunities, we remain committed to supporting a sustainable and accessible future for equestrian businesses across Britain.”

‘At entry level, practically every sport is free – but not riding’

Tim Downes runs successful riding school Ingestre Stables near Stafford, which has clients from across the UK and the world. He told H&H that the challenge for riding schools of finding the balance between being accessible for those wanting to learn to ride and the realities of running a business involving horses is “massive”.

“One of the things that I feel quite strongly about is that any sport is potentially very expensive to be deeply involved in, in terms of competing, travelling and facilities – not just riding. In any sport, if they commit, want to proceed and move up levels, they’re going to have to commit a lot of time and money – but at entry level, practically every sport in this country is free,” he said. “But riding isn’t”.

He added that several years ago, Ingestre tried to encourage various organisations to look at centres to effectively start a foundation that would help give people that first taste. The stables ran free 20-minute private sessions for kids up to the age of 12, and children could come four times.

“We ran it for two years, and it was hugely successful, but we’re a lone voice,” he said. “If we could encourage every riding school in the country to do that – if we could find a sponsor or get it funded somehow – it would help the whole industry hugely.”

Among the other pressures he mentioned is the challenge presented by unlicensed “backyard riding schools”. By not running as proper businesses, these avoid the regulation and taxes that apply to properly run riding schools.

He noted that this can affect market value, lead to confusion among clients as to the differences they are paying for when riders move to a well-run riding establishment, and that tighter regulation is needed.

‘Every riding career begins on a school horse’: World Championships initiative provides support for riding schools

More than 1,000 German riding schools have had support thanks to a three-year initiative in conjunction with the Aachen World Championships that aims to secure long-term access to equestrian sport.

The “100 School Horses Plus” initiative, launched by the German equestrian federation and World Championships organisers, is helping fund 100 riding school horses by the end of 2027.

As is the case in Britain, German riding schools are facing challenging times.

“Without additional support, 20 to 30% of riding schools will have to close in the next few years,” said Thomas Ungruhe, head of team equestrian development at the German federation.

Through the initiative, every three months riding schools can apply for support and funding via a lottery system. The opportunities available – thanks to donations from sponsors, businesses and equestrian partners – include up to €5,000 (£4,300) towards buying a horse, feed, equipment and bedding, plus coaching bursaries and competition entry fees.

To date 1,583 riding schools have received support amounting to €1.45m and the project continues to grow as new partners come on board. Today (27 May) it was announced that Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe – a finance group and partner of the World Championships – will contribute €5,000 to each of the 16 German states towards buying a new horse. This will be available via the lottery; the next takes place in June.

“Riding schools are places where young people not only learn to ride, but also gain experiences that shape them – from team spirit to a sense of responsibility,” said Heike Kramer of Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe.

“That’s why it’s important to us to improve the conditions for this valuable work and ensure access to equestrian sports.”

Stefanie Peters of Aachen-Laurensberger Riding Club said “every riding career begins on a school horse”.

“The support of Sparkassen makes a significant contribution to securing this foundation. Without a strong base, there is no top-level sport,” she said.

‘A wonderful impact’: riding school’s work recognised with two awards

A riding school that “ensures access to equine experiences is not limited by background or circumstance” has been recognised as a business that is “innovating, disrupting and thriving”, as it won two awards.

Warrens Hall Riding School beat seven non-equestrian businesses to win the community impact category at the West Midlands Business of the Year Awards (26 February). The category recognises “transformational work” across the region.

Warrens Hall has been part of the community for more than 30 years, running sensory-led school sessions, holiday programmes for children receiving free school meals and supported internships. The riding school was bought by the Male Family Group Limited in January 2021, which has invested more than £500,000 in site improvements and redevelopment work to “enhance the facilities and expand community programmes”.

“Our aim has always been to make our riding school fun, inclusive and safe to individuals within our local and further community. Achieving this award against the other providers was a huge achievement for us,” Warrens Hall office manager Megan Winup told H&H.

“Seeing the wonderful impact our services and offering has on individuals daily is amazing and is the reason why we continue the work we do. Warrens Hall Riding School ensures that access to equine experiences is not limited by background or circumstance.”

Male Family Group Limited chief executive Neil Male added that the riding school is “incredibly proud” of the award.

“Our team works tirelessly to ensure the riding school remains a welcoming and inclusive place where people of all backgrounds can experience the benefits of working with horses,” he said.

An awards spokesperson said: “The West Midlands Business of the Year awards celebrated the very best business successes from across the region. The shortlisted and winning companies were those that are innovating, disrupting and thriving – and want to showcase their achievements.”

This was a second recent accolade for for the riding school; it was given the “sector champion – aspire award” by Dudley College of Technology, for being a “supported internship placement provider” throughout the 2024-25 academic year.

“Supported internships are fantastic opportunities for individuals with special educational needs, helping them reach their full potential while receiving the support they need to succeed in education and employment,” said Mr Male.

“We work closely with Dudley College of Technology to ensure interns gain meaningful work experience and develop valuable skills for adult life, and we are very proud to be a provider.”

How to choose the ideal riding school for you or your children to start horse riding

Whether you’re five or 50, taking up horse riding can be a wonderful experience. Knowing how to find a riding school that will suit your requirements, or those of your children, is key to ensuring this exciting new adventure is a success. So what should you prioritise? Here are the important things for you to consider when choosing a riding school.

What facilities does your ideal riding school need?

The facilities at riding schools can vary hugely, with some having a single outdoor arena with a sole focus on lessons, while others have indoor schools, club houses and their own cross-country courses, and run clubs, social evenings, shows, exams and more. The right one for you depends on what you want to achieve.

Sarah Phillips, chief operating officer at the British Horse Society (BHS), suggests you do your homework to find out what facilities are available. If you have competitive aspirations or are looking to one day own your own horse, discuss with the school if they can help you to achieve this.

Many schools host low-key shows for their customers to participate in, while others have loan schemes where you can borrow a horse on a set day of the week to learn the skills of horse ownership. They may also run courses in horse handling and care, with exams to test your knowledge, alongside riding lessons.

Sarah says: “While one school might be perfect for you when you start to ride, there is a chance you may outgrow it as your riding progresses.” But equally, if your aspirations are more modest and you just want to enjoy your weekly lesson or hack, the school you start at might be suitable for you long-term.

Check the riding school’s license and approval status

Be sure that the riding school you’re considering is properly licensed. Local councils have a public register of licensed riding schools in their district, so it’s easy to check. Licensed riding schools have proven they have suitable qualifications and their horses are well cared for and suitable to be used to teach riding. They also have to have appropriate insurance in case something does go wrong.

Some riding schools also have BHS and/or Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) approval. If you are considering a career with horses, or want to obtain some equine qualifications, learning to ride at an approved school will allow you to do this.

Both the BHS and ABRS strongly recommend you choose a school that is accredited because it means it has qualified instructors as well as the appropriate safeguarding and health and safety credentials. This gives you the peace of mind that you’re in the safe hands of professionals, with suitable horses and ponies to learn on.

Getting recommendations

A great way of finding out whether a riding school might be right for you, or your children, is to see what other people are saying about it. If you know people who ride, ask them if they can recommend anywhere.

If you don’t have an existing horsey contacts, you can do your research online. This will give you an idea of what people who have ridden at a centre have thought of the establishment. Though each person is different in their preferences, reading reviews may help you decide which ones to call and visit in person and which ones to skip.

The BHS and ABRS recommend visiting riding schools in person before you book in for a lesson. This allows you to get a feel for the centre. It’s also useful to watch a lesson to understand their teaching style.

Julian Marczak, ABRS President, believes that your initial reaction to a riding school is crucial. He says: “You’ll be able to tell a lot about the stables depending on if you’re greeted with a friendly reaction from staff and whether there is the impression of order and cleanliness.”

While as a beginner you may not be sure what to look for in terms of the condition of the horses, if you get a chance to look in the tackroom that can be informative. If it’s tidy and the tack looks supply and shiny that’s a good sign. Julian believes centres that keep their tack in good condition are more likely to care about the services they’re providing. As a result they are more likely to ensure all aspects of their business are primed for customer satisfaction.

The age difference

Some families like the idea of learning to ride as a group. The problem is that the requirements for children learning to ride is quite different to adults. While one school may be able to cater for you all, it’s unlikely to be during the same session as there are different teaching styles formulated for different age ranges. Equally the riding school that’s perfect for your children, might not be so well suited to you.

Julian recommends centres “keep adults and children separate when it comes to teaching”. This is partly due to safety, but also because teaching children requires a different focus “as you need to teach them, but also produce a good sense of fun”.

Sarah feels children thrive better in a riding school where there are lots of other riders of a similar age, with clubs and other events they can get involved in. In comparison, most adults prefer to “enjoy their ride and perhaps stay for a tea or coffee with their riding group, rather than join a club or work towards certificates”.

How far can you travel?

Another practical consideration is how far you’re willing to travel for your riding lessons – will you go further afield for that perfect riding school? Some schools are accessible by public transport, so should you not have access to a car, you can still manage to ride! Research the travel options for your preferred school to check that the travel works for you.

Whichever riding school you ultimately choose, we hope you will enjoy the wonderful experience of spending time with horses while learning how to ride.

‘The possibilities are endless’: riding school uses power of social media to fund free lessons

The owner of a riding school is using the power of social media to make money – to offer free riding lessons, and fulfil a dream.

Chloe Tinson, of the family-run, British Horse Society (BHS) and Association of British Riding Schools approved Barnwell Equestrian Centre in Cornwall, has already raised hundreds of pounds, just by sharing content – and feels “the possibilities are endless”.

Ms Tinson told H&H the idea came to her at the end of last year, after she had completed her BHS business manager’s exam and was looking for a project.

“It’s like a pipe dream,” she said. “People don’t realise you can earn so much money from social media now, and I feel there’s so much good you can get from that.

“I’m one of those people who sit in bed at night ‘doom scrolling’, watching TikToks and YouTube, and I can see the good it can do. People are building houses, buying their own land; it’s about what you make from it. And was thinking ‘What else can I do to really give back, now I’ve got to a point in my own life and career, what else can I do to make it better?”

So instead of trying to make money for herself, Ms Tinson, aka Chloe in Cornwall, is focusing on benefiting others.

She said she considered creating a community interest company (CIC), a concern that benefits the community rather than stakeholders, as other riding schools have done.

“I’m not the most business savvy when it comes to money but I know I can make my own money, and if it’s on social media, it almost feels to me like free money,” she said. “And I can then use that to do something good with.”

Ms Tinson already had personal social media accounts, and some 700 followers on Instagram and 2,000 on TikTok, so she used those as her starting point.

“I thought it was going to be a lot harder; I didn’t expect it to blow up like this,” she said. “The first goal was to monetise Tiktok – we did that in three days by reaching the 10,000 followers you need to be able to start making money. Now I’m having an interview with H&H, British Showjumping has got in touch, and I’ve got an interview with the BBC next week. I feel like the possibilities are endless; you don’t know where it could go.”

Some five weeks in, Chloe in Cornwall has nearly 25,000 followers on TikTok, 14,000 on Instagram and 700 on YouTube, earning about £750. She has been posting videos on what happens at the yard, and updating on the project.

“For something I’m doing with my free time, it’s started taking up a lot of my time!” she said. “But I felt this might just snowball into something bigger and better. Getting yourself on social media opens a much bigger world out; I’ve had people from Australia, America, Sweden, even Africa, watching my videos. Everyone around the world can see what I’m trying to do; if you create a CIC, it’s much more local and people struggle to get funding or support. You have to build a community; why not build that community online?”

Ms Tinson has created an application form for prospective riders, and will post videos explaining how to apply, and the criteria for acceptance.

“I would love it to be for everyone, but we’ve got to start somewhere,” she said. “At the moment, I’m trying to get bums in saddles. It would be great to give people, maybe for the first time, a ride on a horse. Eventually, it would be great to be able to fund those people a block of six, to get to a point of hopefully trotting and getting off the lead rein.

“It’s all about making riding more accessible. It’s known to be an expensive sport, and riding schools unfortunately are going out of business. They can’t afford to put prices lower, costs have got so high. From my point of view I see both sides; riding schools struggling to stay open and so many people left out from accessing horses because they can’t afford it.

“I think everyone’s got to remember where they started from. If they had their own horses, they were very lucky. I was very lucky but I also know what horses can do for mental health and wellbeing, and it’s such a shame to know there are people who are never going to experience what horses can bring. I can’t afford to run sessions for absolutely free, but if I can fund them through social media, it just makes sense all round, doesn’t it?”

BHS head of business support Sarah Dale told H&H the Chloe in Cornwall project is a “great innovation”.

“At the BHS, we believe the equestrian world should be open to everyone, regardless of ability, background, culture or identity,” she said. “By creating spaces where we all feel welcome and connected, we can protect and strengthen the future of horses and everyone who loves them. It’s brilliant that, collectively, we’re able to utilise our riding centres to help make the future of equestrianism more inclusive.”

Council withdraws statement that riding schools can earn £7,200 per day in licence fee dispute

Tackling variation in riding schools’ licensing fees is key to their future, it is agreed – after one local authority claimed centres could turn over £7,200 per day.

A Pembrokeshire County Council (PCC) scrutiny committee discussed licensing fees at a meeting on 25 November. The issue was raised again at a full PCC meeting on 12 December.

At the first meeting, councillors considered a report on how fees are set. PCC charges £583 per year for centres with up to 10 horses, £766.50 for those with 11 to 30 and £1,112 for centres with more than 30. Each centre must also pay “about £300” for a vet check.

“Licensed businesses typically charge around £80 per rider for a two-hour session,” the report stated. “A larger riding establishment taking out three groups of 30 riders, for three sessions each day at the weekend, may turn over £7,200 per day.”

A question was read to the meeting by Cllr Huw Murphy, who owns Dyfed Shires and who said the £7,200 was “wholly inaccurate”. This figure was withdrawn by the council.

But Cllr Murphy also asked why PCC’s charges are higher than its neighbours, adding: “I can’t make clear how upset some Pembrokeshire riding establishment owners are at the figures being presented by PCC in defence of higher fees than other local authorities.”

PCC officer Gaynor Toft contested figures Cllr Murphy provided, stating that for up to 10 horses, Ceredigion council charges £570 and Carmarthenshire £600.

Figures challenged

The meeting heard these figures were provided by PCC’s head of animal welfare. But Carmarthenshire charges £408 for up to 10 horses, including the vet for which PCC charges £300 or more. Ceredigion charges £370 initially for six to 15 horses and £354 for renewal. Bridgend charges £352 including the vet, for all centres. These figures are available on the councils’ websites or by calling the relevant department.

Anita Buxton, who has a 16-horse trekking centre in Pembrokeshire, can only run from October to March but paid £1,127.26 for her most recent licence; £766.50 plus £360.76 for the vet. Had her centre been two miles away, in Carmarthenshire, she would have paid £423 in total.

“I’m trying to be competitive with other centres in Wales; we’re all chasing the same customers and we’re being hammered,” she said, adding that since the centre opened some nine years ago, her fees have more than doubled, while business has declined.

“They’ve done no research, haven’t consulted anybody, not in Pembrokeshire or anywhere.

“We get squeezed all the time; our insurance is more than double what it used to be. We make our own hay, we don’t employ any staff because we can’t afford any. We’re fortunate not to have to pay rent or mortgage – and we still struggle to earn money above keeping the horses.

“We get kids beaming because they’ve been up the hill, and had a canter and seen the views, and that’s why we keep going. But it will get to the point where the costs are so extortionate, what’s the point?”

Cost recovery

The council said at the first meeting it makes no profit on licensing and fees are set on a “cost recovery basis”. Councillors were also told the last consultation in this area was in 2016.

Cllr Murphy raised the £7,200 figure again on 12 December and was told it had been withdrawn, and “played no part in influencing members’ unanimous resolution to note the report with no other recommendations or referrals”.

In a follow-up question, he asked for the licence fee structure to be reviewed, “speaking with knowledge, rather than making guestimates on the subject before we set these fees”.

Cabinet member Jacob Williams said the matter will be considered again in January.

“I accept that your view is that the fees are too high but that wasn’t shared by the committee members,” he said. “But you will get a second bite of the cherry in the January meeting.”

Our lifeblood

British Horse Society (BHS) chief operating officer Sarah Phillips told H&H riding centres are the “lifeblood of equestrian participation”. Previous BHS research showed more than 300 riding schools had closed in Britain since 2018.

“We simply don’t want to lose any more than we already have,” Ms Phillips said.

“We also know that licensing fees are at the discretion of the local authority, as well as the processes they have. Frustratingly, this continues to lead to some rather significant variations from one county to the next. We regularly see the impact this is having on our centres and would like to see more uniformity across Wales and England.

“In collaboration with other equestrian organisations, we continue to work with local authorities and the Government to evaluate any discrepancies and nurture the best processes possible. These ongoing conversations are critical if we want to guarantee the stability for equestrian businesses and, critically, horse welfare.”

84 more precious riding schools lost but some positive signs in tough times

Britain has lost 84 precious riding schools since 2022 – but the rate of closures has slowed, and there is praise for the resilience of those who are surviving, and thriving.

British Horse Society (BHS) research showed that 250 schools closed between 2018 and 2022, a 15% drop leaving 1,497 in Britain. The BHS has since found that 84 more have closed; CEO James Hick told H&H this 6% drop is less bad, “but still a very stark number”.

“We estimated last time that it was more than one million hours of riding opportunity lost per year,” Mr Hick said. “So this is another half of that again. More than 80% of people learn, get their first experience of horses, in a riding school. So it’s still a very bleak picture in many respects.”

But there is positive news; the BHS found a “considerable increase” in animal activity licensing. Since 2022, 174 more of these licences have been issued for equine-related endeavours. This can include “pony parties” but also equine-assisted therapy.

“That’s good news, because there’s an opportunity for people to engage with horses,” Mr Hick said. “We know from the Voconiq research, if people engage once they’re 50% more likely to advocate for horses.

“The news is not good, but it could be a lot worse. And the resilience is incredible. I’m always blown away by the ability people have to be innovative and creative in terms of thinking about their businesses, as well as delivering day to day.”

Mr Hick said capacity is not generally an issue; many schools have waiting lists, it is more productivity and profitability. Staffing remains a challenge and Mr Hick cited the BHS’s career transition fund, which has issued more than 1,400 vouchers to help people train to be coaches. This supports those who provide the coaches’ training.

The BHS Changing Lives Through Horses (CLTH) programme, which helps disengaged young people, is also growing.

“That’s really important in improving profitability, doing good, proving [the effect of] horses in society,” Mr Hick said “Last academic year, we had more than 1,700 young people in the programme, and we’ve got 150 riding schools able to deliver it, which is brilliant. We’ll continue to help develop schools into that.”

Work is ongoing on quantifying the value of horses in society, and the benefit of involving horses in “green social prescribing”; supporting people in outdoor activities for its health benefits, which could mean funding for providers.

“I estimate that CLTH creates around £4m incremental value to riding schools a year,” Mr Hick said, adding that such activities also benefit participants, and society.

Overall, Mr Hick said he is optimistic, despite the continuing cost of living.

“I’m relieved by the statistics, because they could have been much worse,” he said. “It’s still extremely challenging but centres are rising to the challenge. I feel very positive, because I see so much good and how people are shifting and adapting.”

One thriving riding school is Rein and Shine near Swindon, run by John and Johanna McDonald.

“I’m not horsey,” Mr McDonald told H&H. “It works because there’s a non-horsey person looking after the business. She’s the horsey one, I’m happier looking at a spreadsheet!”

Mr McDonald said the business-focused approach is key, as well as top customer service. The school recognises that there are at least two clients for each session; riders and their parents or partners.

“I thought it was crazy to have a business where half the clients don’t want to be there,” he said. “If you provide the right facilities – snacks and drinks, a dry place to watch – there’s something for them too.”

The couple ensured the school and livery yard had financial and business plans and structures.

“It’s run like any business, with sales, marketing, HR,” Mr McDonald said. “You have to have that to thrive.”

The school also offers non-ridden horse-related activities, as well as the CLTH programme, which accounts for about 25% of its revenue, so the McDonalds get “the satisfaction of helping develop young people” as well as the boost to the business. They work with further education providers and PGL adventure holidays, and emphasise charging appropriate prices for a quality service.

“Little things add up, and it’s about marketing and focusing on developing and seeing the opportunities for your business,” Mr McDonald said.

‘The legacy of friendship was overwhelming’: riding school owners celebrate 50 years at the helm

Owners of a riding school that has taught thousands of people to ride since it opened in the 1940s celebrated a “legacy of friendship” with a party to mark 50 years at the helm.

Gerry Dunne and Sue Curtis, who both learnt to ride at Grovely Riding Centre, near Salisbury as children, took on the riding school in 1975 when they were in their 20s. The school was started by Nobby Clarke in 1948 with two ponies, at a yard that was later developed to become Wilton Fire Station. It moved to its current spot with five ponies and has grown from there.

“I learnt to ride here when I was four. I remember having lead-rein lessons walking around a barn, we weren’t allowed to trot, we had to walk for four lessons!” said Gerry.

She carried on riding through her teenage years and worked at Grovely before she qualified as a teacher. Gerry taught English and sociology for a short time before the opportunity that would shaped her life arose.

“Mick Clarke, who had founded the riding school with her father, Nobby, decided she wanted to sell and offered it to me,” said Gerry, who was 22 at the time.

“I was still in student mentality – I had an overdraft and probably an Afghan coat. A chap who had been a livery here said he wanted to lend me the money interest-free. I’d had an accident riding his horse and he said he owed me a favour.

“I met with him on a train and he said, ‘Come into first class and have a G&T’. I probably didn’t even know what a G&T was at that time! He wrote the cheque out there and then.”

“Then Sue came into business with me. She was still teaching in London and had a very good head-of-department job. It just went from there and has grown and grown.”

Sue, who also learnt to ride in the 50s, played lacrosse for Britain, touring the US before her teaching career and joining Gerry in running Grovely.

They have built up the riding school over the years, improving facilities and mentoring their instructors and staff, many of whom have been with them for decades – as have many of their clients. Head girl Sam Stockley joined Grovely 36 years ago, and chief instructor Cam Christie learnt to ride at Grovely when he was seven, and has been teaching here since 1999.

Grovely had more than 100 horses at one stage, including Gerry’s son Dan’s showjumpers, and they are down to “just” 70-odd.

“It has changed. At 22, I thought I knew everything! Over the years I have had the best staff working for me and still do to this day. It’s a different world, and you have to move with that. We are incredibly busy, which is fantastic for us,” said Gerry, adding that although the world has changed, their ethos has remained constant.

“As Sue and I were both in education, it’s always been about education. Either through British Horse Society exams, modern apprenticeships, kids coming for days, it has always been about not just coming for a ride, but learning about the welfare of horses. That probably comes from our teaching background.”

Gerry said that more than 350 people came to the anniversary party (21 July) from all over the world.

“People who had worked here as 16-, 17-year-olds came back. A girl came from New Zealand, people came from Spain, from all over, it was fantastic. The legacy of friendship was overwhelming,” she said.

“I can’t tell you how many people said that Grovely had changed their lives. That was quite overwhelming. There have been lots of highlights, [my son] Dan riding at [Horse of the Year Show] HOYS, his success showjumping. But really, it’s not just about us, but what Grovely stands for for a lot of people. To be doing this, somewhere I grew up learning to ride, is incredible really.

“The staff are seriously irreplaceable. Their loyalty, their dedication… they’ve been fantastic, all of them over the years. Grovely is built on their shoulders really, as well as Sue’s and my own.”

She added: “And I know what a G&T is now!”

Second chances: horses rescued from neglect and abandonment bring joy as much-loved riding school members

A cob who was found abandoned in a stranger’s garden and is now a much-loved riding school horse is just one of 18 neglected equines thriving owing to a new partnership.

Bransby Horses has joined forces with the British Horse Society (BHS) as part of the latter’s Second Chance project. The scheme, which has already benefited 130 horses in collaboration with the RSPCA, involves rehoming rescued horses to BHS approved riding centres.

Since the launch of the Bransby partnership last November, 18 horses rescued by the charity have been rehomed to centres, and six more are awaiting transfer to their new homes. One of these is five-year-old Rex, who was found “severely neglected” in a garden, rescued and rehabilitated by Bransby, and is now part of the family at Peers Clough Packhorses in Lancashire.

The centre’s owner Chris Thomas said: “Rex settled down immediately. He has proved to be an instant hit with our wide age range of clientele and has comfortably taken to our Saturday groups of children.

“The collaboration between Bransby and the BHS has proved very successful for us as an approved centre, for Rex, who is happily settled, and for our clients who think he’s so cute.”

A BHS spokesperson said there has “never been more need” for this project, owing to the numbers of neglected and abandoned horses, and the challenges faced by riding schools. Rescued equines are carefully rehabilitated and assessed to ensure they are suitable for this pathway.

BHS head of business support Sarah Dale said: “Rex’s story perfectly captures why the Second Chance project is so important. Horses and ponies like Rex deserve a future where they are safe, loved and valued – and that’s exactly what this partnership makes possible. We are incredibly proud to be working alongside Bransby Horses and the RSPCA to give these wonderful animals the second chance they truly deserve.”

Bransby rehoming manager Natasha Brocklehurst added that the charity is delighted to be working on the project – and very proud of Rex.

“We’re so thankful to Peers Clough Packhorses for giving Rex a truly wonderful home where he can continue to thrive and bring joy and confidence to young riders,” she said.

Farewell to owner of one of the UK’s oldest riding schools who taught multiple generations

Mary Connor, the owner of The Kennels, one of the UK’s oldest riding establishments in the country, died at home on 18 May, aged 96.

Mary was born in Hemel Hempstead in 1929 to Tom and Doris Connor. Tom had moved from Ireland to Hertfordshire where he met Doris, and he took over as riding master at The Kennels, on the Stowe Estate, Buckinghamshire, in 1925.

Mary and her brother Theodore took over The Kennels in the 1960s; neither married, and they both dedicated their lives to the riding school. They had up to 20 ponies at one time and inspired generations of children to ride and look after horses. They taught thousands of people over the years, some of whom went on to have successful equestrian careers.

As well as lessons, the Connors took people on pony rides around Stowe Gardens, often for free. It was never about the money, they were in it for the love of teaching children and instilling the understanding of caring for horses. It went full circle when children they had taught to ride returned years later with their own children and grandchildren, and those same pupils looked after Mary and Theodore in their latter years.

Jonathan Humbert, who had known Mary and Theordore since 1984, has fond memories of The Kennels.

“The Connors were known for their unfailing kindness. Everyone who rode a pony would stop for a cup of tea and become a lifelong friend, and if they stopped riding they would still visit,” he said.

“The Kennels was a centre of the community, and a portal to a bygone era – nothing changed and it remained how it was in 1925 to this day. Mary was hugely proud of her heritage and The Kennels meant a great deal to her. She remembered every horse she had ever owned, and every hunt she ever went on. One hundred years of unchanging equestrianism in one place, hundreds of ponies and thousands of riders.”

Theodore died five years ago, but Mary remained in good health and only stopped riding in recent years. She maintained her independence and had her last pony until he died three years ago at over 40 years of age, the final pony of a 400-year family history in horses.

‘We’re not giving up without a fight’: community riding school pleas for help to avoid ‘imminent closure’

A much-loved riding school is facing “imminent closure” with a final shutdown date of 28 June unless it can raise a six-figure sum to secure its future.

Park Palace Ponies in Liverpool has issued a final appeal to raise £300,000, which would secure its operations for three years while it implements a long-term sustainability plan. The aim is to develop a strategy with Sport England, to move away from total reliance on grants and fundraising.

The ponies are based in Liverpool’s L8 area. The organisation’s aim is to make riding accessible to all in Liverpool city centre and bring the benefits of equestrian education to an urban environment.

A recent campaign run by Park Palace Ponies raised £4,000, which was enough to cover liability insurance and secure a council riding school licence. But more is needed for long-term survival, and the remaining staff have now received redundancy notices.

“This has been a heartbreaking time,” said riding school chair Pamela Allen. “But we’re not giving up without a fight. This space means everything to our young people and our wider community. This is our city. We are L8.”

In recent weeks, the school has worked with the Liverpool Muslim Outreach Society and children’s charity Team Oasis, and has taken horses out to meet the public at Granby Street Market.

“We understand people are tired, and that fundraising fatigue is real,” said trustee Karen Scott. “But we’re asking – one final time – for support. This is about more than horses. This is about saving a community space that brings joy, purpose, and unity.”

‘He’s loving life’: quirky former racehorse who faced being put to sleep excels in his second-chance home

An 18-year-old former racehorse who was too quirky to be rehomed or retrained, and who was facing being put down to ensure he did not suffer, has found his vocation – in a riding school.

National Hunt horse Harley came off the track seven or eight years ago, and had spent most of that time retired in a field. He is now thriving at Jess’s Horse Haven, which offers lessons and therapy for children and adults with additional needs.

Jess Ingle, who runs the centre, told H&H she wanted to share his story, to show what former racehorses can do, and “in hopes it inspires others to give these horses a second chance”.

“He was going to be put to sleep, because they couldn’t find him a home,” she said. “His previous owner was deeply concerned about his quirks and didn’t want him passed around or ending up in the wrong hands. Then she heard about us, reached out to me and said would I take a chance with him. And I said yes. And he hasn’t put a foot wrong.”

Jess has retrained former racehorses and has two of her own. She explained that Harley could not be stabled, but as her horses live in herds on her 350-acre premises, it seemed his perfect environment.

She gave him some time off to settle, then started work with him.

“Nothing’s bothered him,” she said. “The first time I rode him, there was nothing I could fault him on. We gave him more time to get his confidence, and I rode him every day, doing everything, and there was never an inch of him that tensed or threatened anything.

“We started involving him in the therapy sessions, and he’d stand there being groomed and cuddled, absolutely loving life.”

Harley was then signed off by the vet to be ridden in the riding school. He now has his regulars, who take him out in hand or under saddle.

“He enjoys it; he has his ears forward all the time,” Jess said. “I think at his age, most people would have given up on him, and I understand that, but he’s still got so much to give.

“I think the message is not to give up, and that this shows these ex-racehorses can do anything other horses can do; you just need to have the right set-up, like you do for any horse. I also think it also helps disprove the ‘nutty ex-racehorse’ thing that so many people think.

“Every time I see him, tack him up, see him being ridden, it makes me smile. Because he was going to be put to sleep and now he’s doing this, and loving it.”

‘Thank you for giving us a future’: at-risk riding centre that changes lives saved by supporters

A riding centre that has changed lives but was facing closure has “achieved the extraordinary” – thanks to its many supporters.

H&H reported that Clwyd Special Riding Centre, north Wales, which offers riding, driving, hippotherapy and access to horses for people with additional needs and their families, was facing closure unless £365,000 could be found. The centre was then given a “vital lifeline” that allowed it to extend its fundraising deadline to this week, but it was not out of the woods at that point.

“What once seemed impossible has now become a reality, thanks to the kindness, support and hard work of so many,” a spokesperson for the centre said..

“The much-loved centre, which has provided life-changing equine therapy and activities for people with disabilities and additional needs for 43 years, launched a Crowdfunder campaign on 24 April to secure its future. Now, with a remarkable recent pledge from a local businessperson securing the reduced target of £300,000, they are delighted to confirm that the future of the centre is secure.”

Trustee Victoria Everall, daughter of centre founder Anne Sopwith said all at the school are “overwhelmed”.

“What felt impossible just a few weeks ago has become reality thanks to the kindness, belief and generosity of so many,” she said. “The support has been humbling, from single donations to major pledges, sharing our story or simply talking about Clwyd Special Riding Centre, every act of kindness has made the difference. Words will never be enough to express our gratitude to you all. We also owe huge thanks to the team behind the scenes who have helped steer this campaign with professionalism, passion and care.”

The centre has 12 equines, and hosts three Riding for the Disabled Association groups. It is also part of the British Horse Society’s Changing Lives Through Horses scheme, but rising costs means its ability to provide its services was in doubt.

Ed Reeves from Cariad Investments and Moneypenny, who helped “close the final gap in funding”, said: “As locals with deep ties to Wrexham and north Wales and a lifelong love of horses, this cause resonated strongly with us. But it’s the dedication of the staff and volunteers, and the impact they have on so many lives, that truly inspired us to act. We are delighted to give money as we recognise the time and commitment that everyone gives at the centre. That time is the most valuable, expensive and irreplaceable gift of all. So we are proud to play a small role in helping you continue this incredible mission.”

Cost of riding school licences varies by thousands of pounds, new report finds, among other inconsistencies

The cost of a riding school licence can vary by more than £2,500 between local authorities – as a new report highlights inconsistencies.

At the end of December Defra published its findings from a post-implementation review of the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018, which H&H reported had taken place two years ago (news, 2 February 2023).

The review considered evidence on the effectiveness of the regulations. Under the hiring out horses section, it was reported that stakeholders agree the regulations have “successfully improved animal welfare” and there is “broad support for the robust safety provisions in the guidance”.

The report stated “in terms of improvements”, there was limited knowledge among local authority inspectors of the needs of donkeys, and a “need for clarity” on whether carriage driving is a licensable activity, and calls for safeguarding provisions to be added to the regulations as a large proportion of riding schools’ customer bases are children.

Licensing fees and processes were discussed and it was stated that the licensing system – which includes pet boarding, pet sales and dog breeding – is “intended to be broadly self-financing, with local authorities charging applicants and operators fees to recover the costs of administration”.

Local authorities that responded to the review, which were not named, believed that the costs to them of implementing the regulations had increased – in part by the need to outsource to vets or appropriately qualified inspectors from other local authorities “to address the shortfall (or absence) of qualified inspectors”.

“These impacts on local authorities may have been passed on to scheme applicants,” read the report.

The report said the regulations “allow local authorities to charge fees they consider necessary” for applications and inspections. But the regulations require that “these fees do not exceed the reasonable relevant costs anticipated by a local authority”.

The report said data confirms a variation in licensing costs; an example given for hiring out horses, was a three-year licence costing £51 from one local authority, £2,775 from another.

It was also noted that local authorities have “different individual processes and approaches”.

“Some may choose to employ their own full-time licensing inspectors, others may appoint veterinarians or subcontract the work to neighbouring local authorities. Local authorities may have a higher or lower number of licence-holders within their boundaries and this, together with other local differences, suggests that some variance is to be expected,” the report stated.

“Businesses also reported facing increased costs associated with meeting the licensing conditions. These reports have centred around the costs of complying with the administrative and record-keeping requirements, and the costs associated with training staff.”

British Horse Society (BHS) chief operating officer Sarah Phillips told H&H the society agrees that the updated licensing system has “helped to provide clarity across the industry”.

“Notably, the inclusion of all relevant equestrian activities and businesses under this licensing framework has made a positive difference in delivering improved welfare practices,” she said.

“For greater success, it is important this licensing model is implemented consistently and we would like to see more uniformity across the country.

“However, we do also recognise that fees will vary, as they are determined by the size of the property and/or business. The processes have to take many factors into consideration, including demand in the area of the local authority and the resources they have available. Naturally, this is going to lead to differing approaches.”

Ms Phillips added that in collaboration with other equine organisations, the BHS continues to work with local authorities and the Government to “evaluate any discrepancies and to nurture the best processes possible”.

“These conversations are essential to guarantee the stability for equestrian businesses and critically, equine welfare,” she said.

Kim Ayling, World Horse Welfare head of public affairs, said the charity has “concerns regarding a lack of consistency in the licensing of riding establishments, particularly when it comes to assessing welfare and the cost of a licence, as identified in the review”.

“This not only has a negative impact on the welfare of the equines but can also be detrimental to the viability of these businesses,” she said.

“While the review outlines that training has improved, it has also highlighted the lack of appropriately qualified inspectors. This is a significant barrier to the effective and consistent implementation of the licensing of activities.”

Riding school’s urgent plea for support to ‘keep the lights on’ and avoid selling its ponies

A city riding school is urgently appealing for help to avoid “imminent closure or the sale of ponies at the end of April”.

Park Palace Ponies in Liverpool was set up as a pilot seven years ago and has since given thousands of children the opportunity to learn to ride and discover the joy of being around horses. But issues including rising costs and decreasing income mean its future is under threat.

It has seven ponies in its care and in addition to riding, it offers equine welfare and therapeutic sessions to people in the area.

Karen Scott, whose day job is writing grant applications and costing for research calls for a university, became a trustee in January. She told H&H she became involved as her daughter, Maddie, rode at Park Palace Ponies and is now a volunteer there.

“We wanted to help save Park Palace Ponies and Maddie suggested, ‘Mum, you could help, you do this all the time,” she told H&H.

“We also have new chair Pamela Allen at the helm who is breathing new life into this and the charity’s plans. But applying for funding can take weeks and then waiting for the outcome takes time – three to six months on average.”

Park Palace Ponies launched crowd funding in September 2024, while it was awaiting advice from the Charity Commission. Charity status has since been granted.

Former chair Jane Beirne worked hard to try and secure funding at the time, which has been vital in keeping Park Palace Ponies operating. The charity is now building on her work.

Park Palace Ponies’ aim is to make riding accessible to all in Liverpool city centre and to bring the benefits of equestrian education to an urban environment.

It costs £10,000 a month to run Park Palace Ponies. Lessons and parties provide some income, but rising bills and loss of funding connected to schools that used its facilities have hit hard.

“Our utility bills have doubled, which I have now applied to cap with the local council, and vet costs, farrier costs, horse feed, bedding and general care costs are increasing,” said Mrs Scott.

“While lessons are much in demand, we must keep our lesson prices low. We want to be a riding school for the community, to dispel the myth that horse riding is only for those who can afford it. There is nowhere else in Liverpool city centre that offers riding lessons like ours.”

She added: “We are based in Dingle, Toxteth, an area of Liverpool considered a low socio-economic area with lots of young families and first-time buyers there and in surrounding areas.

“We also create an environment for young volunteers and groups who can come and spend time in the yard, in a safe space while learning new skills, making new friends and being around these amazing animals.

“We will be working with local businesses to offer children the chance to ride and have subsidised lessons, and we will be working with local charities to identify those children who would most benefit. Young adults too can benefit from our pony therapy and pony care course.”

She added that the charity is reworking its sponsorships and business partnerships and developing a new website.

“Our plans are to apply for funding and partnerships that will make Park Palace Ponies a more sustainable charity and we have developed a business plan with the help of Sport England. But we just need time to enable us to get going and ‘keep the lights on’ in the meantime.”

‘They could lose their beloved horses’: riding school and equine rescue at risk as council leases its grazing to alpacas

Staff at a riding school and equine rescue in Hampshire that has been running for half a century fear the business may be at risk, and horses moved on, as the council is giving their summer grazing land to alpacas.

Russells Equestrian Centre in Southampton recently celebrated 50 years in business; for 10 of those, it has leased summer grazing from Eastleigh Borough Council. This space fulfils the conditions of its council-issued riding school licence regarding necessary space for the number of horses it has.

But in December, the council told Russells it would no longer be allowed to use the 7.5-acre Lower Russell Fields site at Itchen Valley Country Park, to allow the “grazing and walking” of alpacas.

Amanda Winstone, a committee member of the Epona Trust, the rescue side of the operation, told H&H the news came as a major blow.

“It’s a riding school and the Epona Trust allows them to rescue horses; they rehabilitate them and then some are used in the riding school and some for equine-assisted therapy,” she said. “They do a lot of work with children who are struggling in school or have additional needs; the children come on leaps and bounds and it’s amazing what they do.

“The issue now is that the riding school licence depends on having a certain acreage of grazing, which includes that field. It’s the same council that issues the licence and owns the field, and the concern is without the land, Russells will have to rehome a number of the horses, then I think the business wouldn’t be viable.”

Amanda said the venue has previously lost grazing to housing, and there is no more suitable land nearby.

“It would mean they wouldn’t be able to take on more rescues either,” she said. “Carol Boulton established Russells 50 years ago, and with her daughter Verity Tidmarsh has a hugely positive impact on our community. They could lose their whole business, but the impact is worse than that and could also mean losing their beloved horses.”

Amanda said the community is rallying round, and a Change.org petition calling for the council to reconsider has attracted nearly 900 signatures.

A spokesperson for Eastleigh Borough Council told H&H: “The council has entered into a new licence agreement to allow the grazing and walking of around 30 alpacas on the 7.5-acre Lower Russell Fields site at Itchen Valley Country Park. This will provide grazing and the opportunity for children and adults to walk alpacas at the park. As well as having biodiversity and health and well-being benefits, it will generate income towards the upkeep of the park. There are no plans to build shops on the site.

“The previous seasonal grazing licence for Russells Equestrian has been issued for many years on a month-to-month basis between May and October, with no commitment in the legal agreement to continue this year on year. We wrote to Russells Equestrian in December giving them five months’ notice that we would not be renewing the licence this coming May, and the council is continuing to work with Russells Equestrian to look for alternative grazing.”

Another year passes, and the prospects for riding schools have never looked so bleak. With costs exploding upwards, there’s little hope – and no help – on the horizon.

My worst moment of the last month was when a proprietor asked me, with tears welling up in her eyes: “How can we keep our riding school open?”

Actually, I lie. An even more disheartening moment came when I repeated that question to another proprietor of a large, successful centre. This person informed me their accountant had suggested a 7% rise in lesson prices in January.

We put our prices up in August, I retorted, but couldn’t do so again, as nearly 20% in six months was a hike too far for clients. Yet the suggestion that this is the only way to stay open highlights the complexity of this dilemma.

While there’s breath in my body, I will fight to keep our riding school, The Talland School of Equitation, open. But I’m hating the Government that told me they’re making it better for working people – I now have to work even harder to afford to employ staff.

Some countries recognise the value of their riding schools and support them. Which British equestrian governing bodies will lobby Parliament for us?

Riding schools supply the equestrian industry’s future customers and professional talent. Many also host competitions. The current crisis means dressage venues are suffering. Riders complain that entry fees are going up, but we cannot expect these centres to run at a loss.

Of course, the whole horse sector is feeling the financial pain of soaring overheads. But compared with livery and competition yards, riding schools face the heaviest insurance burden alongside the requirement – and cost – to be publicly licensed.

All we can do is work dawn to dusk, seven days a week, and try to find time to enjoy our horses.

Meanwhile, another pressing issue looms: judges’ upgrading now happens online – without live horses. Does this explain some of the marking disparity more often being seen between judges?

A whole horse on a typical computer screen is the size of a pot of Tipp-Ex. How can you see details such as muscles working at that scale? A two-dimensional digital image and a three-dimensional, in-person view are incomparable.

Finding confidence

Shifting from the perspective of judges to riders, let’s address something that isn’t discussed enough: being nervous – or downright frightened – on a horse. Often, it’s not even acknowledged by those who experience it. Yet it happens to the best, including international riders across all equestrian sports.

Some days, I tense up if the wind blows, a horse snorts, a dog runs out or a shadow prompts a spook. I’ve always had bouts of being terrified, and not just now I’m older and have ailments. Such was my nervousness at a junior eventing European Championship that I threw up while travelling cross-country.

Over the years, sports psychologists have come and gone – mind over matter has sometimes worked, sometimes failed.

The best way for me to face my fears has been to own it and deal with it – and to not be afraid to talk about it to sensible people. A vague “you have this” response doesn’t do it for me, but we are all different.

Rider frighteners come in many guises. Am I good enough? Is my horse good enough? Have you seen that flower decoration waving in the wind? Everyone else in the class is better than me. My horse is too fresh, too lazy, above the bit, behind the bit, and so on.

There is brilliant help out there, and I’m not saying don’t seek help. But ultimately, it’s up to each one of us to grab our fears by the scruff of the neck and, in the words of the great trainer Henk van Bergen, “do it”.

Anyway, that’s my New Year’s resolution for 2025. Last year, I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed riding and competing. As the age of 73 beckons, this lady is not for turning – or giving up!

How inheritance tax changes could hit the equestrian industry as well as farmers

Changes announced in the budget could affect stud, riding school and livery yard owners – as people are reminded to take appropriate financial advice.

In the Government’s autumn budget on 30 October chancellor Rachel Reeves announced reforms to agricultural property relief (APR) and business property relief (BPR).

Currently, people can claim for agricultural property relief on qualifying agricultural land and property, and business property relief on qualifying interest or shares in a business without a limit or cap.

But from 6 April 2026, the full 100% relief from inheritance tax (IHT) will be restricted to the first £1m of combined agricultural and business property. Above this amount, individuals will only be eligible for 50% relief from IHT.

Concerns from farmers have been reported nationally, and protests have taken place in London. But it has been highlighted that equine stud owners who claim agricultural property relief could also be affected.

“Upon a farmer or stud owner’s death, their beneficiaries could apply for agricultural property relief – and potentially also business property relief – and there was no limit to how big that claim might be,” Nicola Glass, an independent financial adviser at Integrity365, told H&H.

“But now the Government has put a limit on this, and when it comes to studs, when you add up the land, buildings, farmhouses and anything else that could qualify, it could easily be more than £1m in value. This means that the beneficiary will have to pay 20% IHT on anything over this.”

Generally, livery yards and riding schools trading as businesses do not qualify for agricultural property relief but some may qualify for business property relief – so such businesses could also be affected by the changes. It is important that owners take professional advice from their solicitor and tax advisor to confirm their situation.

“Should business property relief be applicable to an estate or individual, as with the agricultural property relief, this will be capped at 50% for anything over £1m,” said Ms Glass.

“There’s lots of change from the budget that people haven’t quite picked up on yet. There’s been lots of discussions about farmers, which is important, but it affects a lot of other people as well.”

Ms Glass added that the message is “not to panic”.

“There are things that can be done, and the first step would be to value all your assets and speak to an adviser about what your potential tax liability could be,” she said.

“From there you can look at IHT planning, and options can include taking out insurance against the liability or considering gifting within your lifetime.”

A British Horse Society spokesperson told H&H it encourages anyone who owns a riding centre or livery yard to think about whether they could be affected by the changes to business property relief.

“Of course, the impact will vary largely depending on your individual situation or circumstances, so we would strongly urge you to seek clear legal advice and guidance,” she said.

Example: Anne Stables runs and is the sole owner of a profit-making stud farm.

Anne has full use of her IHT bands on her death, totalling £500,000. Her will gives everything to her three children equally, and her home is not deemed a “working farmhouse”, so does not qualify for relief.

Her home is worth £400,000 and she has £100,000 savings. Her APR/BPR qualifying land and assets are worth £1.3m

Previously, the stud farm would pass tax-free; only her home and savings would potentially be subject to IHT. As these are under £500,000, no IHT is due.

When the changes come into force, only £1m of the stud farm value would fall into the 0% tax charge; the additional £300,000 only qualifies for 50% relief. This would be taxed at 20%, totalling £60,000. Anne should seek professional advice to look at IHT tax mitigating solutions.

Horse world faces ‘perfect storm’ of wage and tax increases

The equestrian industry is facing “the perfect storm” as minimum rates of pay will rise further than predicted next spring.

Businesses face soaring wage bills on top of the well-documented ongoing issues, including high interest rates and increased pressure on everyone’s finances.

There are also concerns that some in the industry have failed to move with the times over the years – they have been warned that non-compliance with the law is not an option and that HMRC is cracking down.

The living wage – the minimum rate of pay for people aged 21 and over – will rise from £11.44 to £12.21 an hour in April. The rate for 18- to 20-year-olds will increase from £8.60 to £10, as part of the phased move to a single hourly rate. Apprentices’ minimum wage will be boosted from £6.40 to £7.55.

This will mean those on low incomes will have significant pay rises. But there are serious concerns about what this will mean for businesses’ viability, and if it may lead to a rise in false self-employment, and a narrowing gap in wage progression between less and more experienced staff.

Equestrian Employers Association president Tullis Matson told H&H he is “really concerned” about the effects.

Mr Matson stressed that the workforce in the equestrian industry needs to be properly paid, and that businesses will need to reflect on where to find the money.

“It’s like the perfect storm for the industry, which is quite worrying,” he said. “This really is a tricky time for the equine industry. We will fight our way through, but I worry about the impact on certain businesses and individuals.”

He added: “The belt is already tight and it can’t go any tighter.”

National Insurance (NI) contributions for employers will rise from 13.8% to 15% on workers’ earnings. The threshold at which employers start to pay NI will change from £9,100 per year to £5,000 per year, for each employee. But the employment allowance – the amount employers can claim back from their NI bill – will increase from £5,000 to £10,000.

British Grooms Association chief executive Lucy Katan warned that the equestrian industry is already behind when it comes to good employment, so the impact of this budget will be keenly felt.

“My advice, as I’ve said before, is that the entire industry has to reduce its hours,” she told H&H, adding that for many, these rises will not be sustainable.

“By bringing it down to a 40-hour week, you reduce the impact substantially.”

She added: “They’re investing in HMRC, so we are going to see many more investigations – and targeted investigations – and our industry is already flagged. If you are an employer that is not adhering to the national minimum wage, you are going to get found out.”

What’s the difference?

Rough examples based on a 50-hour working week (wages alone, not including increased pension contributions or NI, so overall totals will be higher).

‘Traumatised’ pony collapses after youths tied string around his throat in second attack

The owner of a riding school has spoken of her heartbreak and fear after three of her ponies were targeted in their field by youths, who tied string around their heads so tightly that one collapsed.

On 26 April at around 5pm staff at Eston Equitation Centre, Middlesbrough, saw three teenage boys in the distance in their field, which borders the Eston hills. Two of the boys were riding elderly 13.2h pony Billy, and one was on pony Teena, who is recovering from lameness.

“We could see the boys smacking Billy with a stick, and when they saw us coming they got off, climbed over fencing on to the hills, and took off on quad bikes,” Laura Storey, the centre’s owner told H&H.

“They look to be around ages 14-20, and seeing them hitting Billy was awful. When we got to the ponies we found that they had string tied round their faces and through their mouths, like makeshift halters. The string had cut into Billy’s face.”

A vet attended to Billy and Teena, and police were called.

“We hoped that would be the last of it, having caught them in the act, and we increased our field checks. We didn’t see anything else, then on 5 May when we went to check the ponies at 7.30am, we realised one pony, Jingles, wasn’t with the others,” said Laura.

“We found him choking with string tied around his throat and through his mouth. It was tied like a noose, so it had pulled tighter and tighter round this throat, he couldn’t breathe and he collapsed. It was so tight we couldn’t get a finger in between, but we managed to cut it off. He got up but collapsed again”

Jingles, an 11.2hh Welsh, suffered cuts to his mouth and has been “traumatised” by the event. He was treated by a vet, and Laura contacted the police again.

“We checked the rest of the ponies and they seemed ok, but we found large sections of the field’s outer fencing had been pulled down. We have outer and inner fencing, and we think they’d have tried to take the ponies if it hadn’t been for the inner fence,” said Laura.

“Later that day, at 5.30pm, we could see another a group of boys and girls in the field again, and we chased them down but some got away on quads, and some ran on to the A174.”

Laura shared what has been happening on Facebook in the hope word would spread to help keep the horses and ponies safe.

“I just don’t understand why this group is doing this. We are taking it in shifts to watch over the ponies at all times, including through the night. We are exhausted but I don’t know what the solution is. It’s been an absolute nightmare for us but we just want to make sure the horses and ponies are ok. It’s such a worry that they will come back,” said Laura.

“At first I didn’t want to put anything about it online, but I felt if more people are aware then there will be more eyes on the horses and ponies. It’s a large 20-acre field and takes an hour to walk the perimeter, and they all live out together.

“The trouble is because the field is on a hill, the group could always see us coming from the bottom and could get away. We hope if people are out walking on the Eston hills and see something happening then they can immediately let us know or phone the police.

“We’ve had lots of support, and people in the local community have been disgusted about what’s happened,” said Laura.

“It’s just heartbreaking, we are a riding school and our horses and ponies are family. They come to us and are never sold, so we have lots of retired or older ones. They should be safe in their own field. We bought the business in 2016, and have never known anything like this.”

A Cleveland Police spokesman said officers attended Eston Equitation and provided forensic, crime prevention, and safeguarding advice and the force’s equine officer will highlight the incidents at this month’s regional equine meeting.

“In the meantime, we would appeal to parents and carers to check what their children are doing while out of the house and to stress to them that police will identify and deal with anyone causing harm or suffering to animals.

“We would also appeal for anyone with information to contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 076245.”

‘Keeping the bond alive’: riding schools celebrated at national championships

Riders from across the country travelled to Leicestershire for the British Horse Society (BHS) annual national riding school championships, in a celebration of the work schools do in allowing more people to access equestrianism.

More than 90 competitors took part at the event, at Pickering Grange on 3 April, in classes including jumping, dressage and stable management. One aim of the championships is to allow those who do not own horses or ponies the chance to compete.

Another is to help encourage participation, and the winner of one of the dressage finals showed an innovative way of doing this – Fatima Ouhamid of Summerfield Stables in Birmingham won riding side-saddle.

Her mother Malika Keijzer, an instructor at Summerfield, told H&H this could be a way for stricter Muslims to compete.

“Some can’t compete as it’s in tight trousers but side-saddle allows them to wear the apron so they can,” she said. “So at Summerfield we’re getting the ponies used to side-saddles, and Fatima’s helping, getting the ponies ready so other girls can compete too.”

A BHS spokesman said the day was a “celebration of riding schools in the UK and the great value they bring to people in the local communities”.

Oonagh Meyer, BHS head of operations for approved centres, added: “It really was a fantastic event and it was great to see all those who otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance to compete show off the brilliant skills they have learned at their respective riding schools.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to see hundreds of people’s love for horses grow at centres across the UK. Days like these really highlight how important that unique horse-human bond is, as well as the valuable work riding centres are doing to keep that bond alive.”

Pammy Hutton shares her views on some of the current challenges faced by the equestrian industry

“What is the future of dressage?” It’s the question that continues to dominate worldwide. Amid the calls for horses not to be used in sport and for barefoot and bitless, many who are closely involved with the sport at all levels – and who understand the real issues – struggle to make headway against a rising tide of ever-louder but anonymous opinions.

There’s a strong push for the FEI to lead publicly. But a planned meeting with dressage stakeholders is not due until after the €400,000 (£342,000) prize-funded World Cup Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, next month. Many feel the timing lacks any sense of urgency. It’s also a strange choice of location for a welfare-based summit when Saudi Arabia currently has one of the worst equine doping records of any FEI-participating nation.

Higher overheads

My friend Tim Downes and I are talking again about hacking to 10 Downing Street to get the plight of riding schools noticed by those who could help.

Riding schools are the bedrock of UK equestrianism, particularly for first-generation riders, and many second-generation riders also use riding schools to further their development.

Small, local riding schools facilitate relatively affordable access to basic riding, often nurturing a hobby that will last a lifetime and inspire young equestrians to follow a career in the horse industry. Many of our elite coaches, Olympic riders and grooms started in a riding school.

Larger establishments, often operating nationally, develop the skills and knowledge that sustain and progress competitive riders’ abilities. They are also hands-on, practical training places for the equestrian industry’s future workforce.

Many riding schools are now under huge pressure to remain in business. While for many there’s no shortage of clients, a dearth of qualified, experienced staff and vastly increasing overheads are taking a serious toll. With electricity up 200% and our wage bill about to go up by £50,000, no wonder there are under-the-carpet deals. But not on my parade!

The issue is compounded by the many unlicensed and uninsured riding schools operating, plus “hobby” riding schools run to fund the proprietor’s horses on premises maintained by other income sources. Genuine livery yard businesses are similarly suffering.

Off-grid operations undercut authentic riding school or livery yards and influence market prices. Giving lessons on unlicensed “schoolmasters” and “loaning for a financial contribution” arrangements sail dangerously close to the wind legally.

Over the past 40 years, equine college courses have prompted a move to academic education in the horse industry. Yet how to read your horse cannot be learnt in the classroom alone. It requires real, live horses and input from experienced horse people. This trend has contributed to a significant reduction of available, practical and competent staff.

Riding schools were slow to react to changing times. However, within the confines of local competition from less orthodox businesses, they have started to offer strong career options with competitive salaries. But this has not yet begun to solve the real-world workforce issue.

The British Horse Society continues to offer practical qualifications and works hard via its career transition fund to encourage people into the riding school industry. But will any riding schools be left for emerging professionals to work in?

New dressage tests

The new British Dressage tests are printed out and on my desk. There are four to six tests at each level – but where is advanced medium 2?

It’s good to see so many webinars and face-to-face opportunities around the country for riders to gain insight and understanding of the new test structure.

That all tests are now qualifiers will make life easier for riders and organisers alike, and has been well received.

I’m often asked how to improve results. One simple tip: ride the test as it says – the letters don’t move. Also, prepare the exercises – the horse didn’t read the test.

Inspired by a “new clothes to suit the horse” marketing slogan, I’ve ordered black and white to match my mare. Will I look like a Friesian heifer or will monochrome become the in thing?

Improved optimism for the future of riding schools, but rates still a big issue

There is more optimism than there was for the future of riding schools – as ideas to support and promote them have been and continue to be put in place.

Riding school owners joined British Horse Society (BHS) CEO James Hick and others at a round-table discussion at Talland School of Equitation on 20 November, after the BHS coaches’ convention.

Mr Hick told H&H that the convention, which was sold out with 300 attendees and had a waiting list, was a “great day”. But he wanted to stress the work being done to support riding schools.

He cited BHS figures showing that 250 schools have closed since 2018 (news, 9 March).

“There are many reasons they’re closing, but the threat that runs through all schools is a lack of qualified staff,” he said. “That means they can’t be as productive as they want to be; we found most schools have 30% less head count than they’d like, and 50 people on the waiting list, who they can’t help as they haven’t got the staff.”

“Specifics from the round table include that we need to continue to work as collaboratively as possible with college students to ensure the curriculum they work to supports them in being as job-ready as possible. We’re doing that, and many schools are working with colleges to create a talent pipeline.

“We need to keep focused on business rates, although it will be difficult to make progress on that, and we need to collectively promote the good careers and workplaces at every riding school.”

Mr Hick said another key is improving productivity by using quieter times, such as weekdays. He said there were “great examples” of schools diversifying into apprenticeship training, as alternative education providers with local authorities, for which there is funding.

The BHS also now has approved providers of pony parties, another way for schools to broaden their offering.

“I’m far more optimistic than I was at the start of this year,” he said. “I was worried about the cost-of-living crisis, and though it has bitten quite hard and is still a worry, riding schools have shown resilience, weathered it, looked for alternative revenue stream, and continue to have demand, which has never been higher. I hope now we’ve bottomed out and can continue to build on the vibrant and strong, positive opportunity for growth.”

Talland owner Pammy Hutton who, with Ingestre Stables owner Tim Downes has been supporting and raising funds for riding schools since Covid hit, agreed that rates is a major issue.

She came up with ideas including a national riding school week, with marketing and publicity, and special events and discounts at schools, and displays such as the one Talland once put on with a Cats theme, at the Royal Show.

“We’ve got to get back to inspiring people to ride,” she told H&H. “Small riding schools can’t find people at [BHS] stage two, and the minimum wage is going up again, which will affect everyone, and we can’t just pass it on to clients. I’m not God but I’m passionate about this.”

Mr Downes told H&H the round table was very useful. He believes one reason some schools may struggle is because of large mortgages, as they “build a huge asset”.

“The other big issue for everyone is rates,” he said. “We won’t get anywhere on that without a collaborative approach from all the organisations; what we pay for buildings per square foot is more than a company like Amazon. Ithat was sorted out, riding schools would be far more viable.

“Another thing is that so many people run riding schools and livery yards as non-viable businesses – they might be on their parents’ property and they’re not paying the bills, but they set the market price and everyone else goes by that.”

‘On the brink of disaster’: stark warning for future of Britain’s riding centres

Britain’s riding schools are “on the brink of a disaster” and the future is a “frightening prospect” unless action is taken, leading figures have warned following fresh research.

Last year, the health of riding establishments research conducted by British Equestrian (BEF) and its member bodies highlighted a “supply and demand predicament” faced by riding centres (news, 22 September 2022). It found that establishments were running on average at 75% capacity owing to issues around workforce, horsepower and costs. One year on, the survey has been repeated and findings show little change.

“Across Britain, riding schools are operating in an increasingly struggling sector, and an already precarious situation has been exacerbated first by the pandemic and now by the cost-of-living crisis,” said Mandana Mehran Pour, BEF’s head of participation.

“Put simply, our equestrian establishments are on the brink of a disaster and traditional delivery models are under threat if we don’t find ways to address the issues.

“If workforce and horsepower issues could be resolved, many centres could be operating at 100% capacity.”

The British Horse Society (BHS), the Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS+), The Pony Club, the Riding for the Disabled Association and Horsescotland worked with the BEF on the survey. Operating capacity levels are mirrored one year on, with 70% of centres saying they would like to up capacity but are struggling to do so. The workforce shortfall, including paid staff and volunteers, is a significant issue. A total of 55% of centres said the cost-of-living crisis has worsened capacity problems.

But there is optimism among centres, many of whom are diversifying business models to keep people engaged and make additional money.

A cross-industry working group is tackling licensing. Progress is also being made on supporting centres with business development, marketing, funding, keeping riders engaged through non-ridden activities, and staff and volunteer management.

“We are at a time-critical point for many of our riding establishments and we need to do everything possible to prevent further closures,” said Ms Mehran Pour. “Their resilience and optimism are commendable, but there is only so much they can do single-handedly and we have already proven the value of collaborative working within our member bodies to achieve results.”

BHS chief executive James Hick said that demand to attend a riding school and connect with horses “has never been stronger, with most centres reporting a waiting list of 50 clients or more”.

“But without the qualified coaches and yard staff needed to run these centres, this demand is just not going to be fulfilled,” he said. “This is such a frightening prospect. We need to acknowledge how important spending time with horses is for our mental health and overall wellbeing.”

George Baber, ABRS+ director of member services and operations, told H&H that “not all, but a good number” of riding schools are “struggling to make ends meet”.

“It’s a mixture of rising costs, which have an impact both on customers because they can afford less, and on [the schools’ own] internal costs. There’s a sector within the riding school environment that’s definitely struggling,” he said. “We’ve had a number of ABRS+ schools close, or convert to livery yards, because they either can’t get workforce or can’t get horses, or simply because the equation doesn’t seem to work out for them financially. So there’s no doubt that grassroots riding has suffered, and continues to suffer.”

He added there is another side too – in the past riding schools have closed and been replaced with new ones opening. While they have seen some replacements, helped by the new ABRS+ category to prepare them for licensing, they are not seeing the same volume as previously.

“We have to start from the basis that every riding school is its own business,” said Mr Baber. “So when we’re looking at them as a group, we’re looking at the things that might be enablers, to help schools be more sustainable into the future.”

Positive impact of city riding centres

A new study has highlighted the “overwhelming” positive impact urban equestrian centres have on their local area.

The BEF worked in partnership with the Sport and Recreation Alliance on the project, which involved 13 centres.

Researchers found that “sense of community, social outcomes, and the benefits to physical and mental wellbeing were frequently cited” in interviews, and the community feel translates into a strong volunteer culture. And while “each centre is successful in its own way”, the survey found that “what connects them as a common attribute is the passion and desire to make a difference through horse riding”.

But establishments reported that some of the issues highlighted in the health of riding establishments research are compounded by their location.

“If we are to be successful in tackling inequalities in access to physical activity in the form of riding, we must understand how those delivering in the community operate and the challenges they face,” said Ms Mehran Pour.

Failed riding school horse leads European Showjumping Championships: ‘We’re going for gold!’

One combination who have shone from day one of the 2023 European Showjumping Championships at the San Siro racecourse in Milan, Italy (30 August-3 September), is Sweden’s Jens Fredricson and Markan Cosmopolit.

The duo took an early lead with the quickest clear on day one and haven’t touched a pole across three rounds of 1.60m showjumping tracks. On Friday (1 September), Jens and the 12-year-old Swedish warmblood “Cosmo” helped Sweden win team gold, in scenes of great jubilation.

Now, tomorrow’s individual medal decider awaits, and the pair go into the final day’s competition in the gold medal position, still holding their zero score from day one.

Jens described the brilliant gelding, with whom he also won team gold at the world championships in Herning last year, as “not 10 out of 10, he was 11 out of 10” after Friday’s third clear round.

But when he was a youngster, you wouldn’t necessarily have picked out the gelding as a dual championship gold medal-winning horse.

Markan Cosmopolit: early days at the riding school

Cosmo was bred by Soren Savgren near Stockholm and he was bought as a three-year-old for the Swedish National Equestrian Center in Stromsholm. He started his ridden career at the riding school there, where he was adored, but was considered far too “naughty” and too sensitive for the role.

“You could say it was a deluxe riding school – it’s where they educate all the riding instructors in Sweden,” explained Jens, whose brother Peder Fredricson was also part of the gold medal-winning team at the world championships – and at the Tokyo Olympics.

Students at the riding school produced the young Cosmopolit (Cohiba 1198 x Calida) as part of their development programme, and Jens competed him briefly as a five-year-old at the national championships. Jens saw the potential in the young gelding and took the reins in November of his six-year-old year.

Jens gradually stepped him up through the grades and, as a nine-year-old he really started to catch the eye. He won a three-star grand prix in Denmark, shortly before jumping double clear in Aachen to help Sweden win the Nations Cup.

The following year, 2022, was Cosmo’s time to shine. The duo finished third in the World Cup Final in Leipzig, helped Sweden win gold at the world showjumping championships and went on to help Sweden win the Nations Cup in Spruce Meadows, Canada, another of the toughest competitions in the world.

Riding western style at the European Showjumping Championships

This year, they finished runners-up in the five-star Rome grand prix and arrived in Milan, Italy, in tremendous form. The pair have been a joy to watch throughout the first three days of the championship and Jens is one of the most popular riders on the circuit and a brilliant horseman. But even he says he’s still improving, and he was surprised to find himself in contention as an individual rider for the first time at a championship.

“I’m riding better and he’s stronger and more experienced this year,” said Jens, who jumps Cosmo holding the reins in the western style of riding rather than the traditional English, to help with the gelding’s sensitivity in the mouth.

“I’m very optimistic for Sunday. I’m going for gold.”

So how will he be preparing for one of the biggest days of his life, jumping for a gold medal at the European Showjumping Championships?

“It’s my wedding anniversary on Saturday, so I’m taking my wife out in Milan,” admitted Jens.

The top 25 individual riders after the first three rounds in the European Showjumping Championships go through to Sunday’s first round of jumping and Jens will be joined by all three of his Swedish team-mates, Wilma Hellstrom (Cicci BJN), Henrik von Eckermann (Iliana) and Rolf-Goran Bengtsson on Zuccero, as well as Steve Guerdat (Dynamix De Belheme) for Switzerland, Michael Duffy of Ireland on Cinca 3, and Ben Maher (Faltic HB) for Great Britain.
